The first pep assembly of the year is always really nerve-wracking because it’s the first time the school sees how we perform as a team, but it’s exciting for the new members on varsity to dance with us. junior Johanna Cook Right: Junior Sam Benson performs a back walkover during a gymnastics meet. Benson worked to master back walkovers for two seasons. “It was hard for me because I was scared to go blindly backwards and it requires a lot of timing and strength,” Benson said. “I was really struggling with it and one day I just got it.” Photo by Sam Bolanovich.

Pep assemblies are usually more fun because the crowd gets more involved and we get to dance. Pep assemblies also don’t take up your whole night like a game does, which can be hard to balance with homework and other stuff.

I’d play the trombone because it is loud and a brass instrument. I’d definitely learn the song ‘Summertime’ because it’s a good jazz standard. It’d be really hard to learn how to improve though.

Strings students relate their favorite orchestra moments. My favorite part of being a part of orchestra is knowing that we are playing great pieces of music. This year we are playing the Rienzi Overture by Wagner. There are challenging parts to it, but when we accomplish a section that we were struggling with we know we’ve reached a goal. The beginning of it is very powerful, and it just builds from there.

junior Emily Mullett

My favorite orchestra memory was going to state with all the other orch dorks. It was really fun to play great music in Wichita – it was different level of playing. It was intense but really fun at the same time. We played the Rachmaninoff and it was a pretty hard but powerful piece that ended up sounding really great.

Choir singers relate their favorite performance moments.

“ “

My favorite choir moment was in the choir room singing ‘Sleep’. We were getting ready for the concert and we all held hands. Anytime we sang ‘Sleep’ you could feel everyone’s energy. No one was thinking about anything but the song, and when 130 people do that in one room it’s really emotional.

junior Christina Beynon

My favorite moment was when we sang ‘Amor de mi Alma’ at the spring concert. Singing that beautiful Spanish love song with a choir that I love so much and the director that will never forget was the experience of a lifetime. Knowing how much it meant to [choir director Tracy] Resseguie made the performance on stage more than just a song.

junior Andrew Sweeney

During seventh hour Chansonettes, sophomores Sarah Are and Kinsey Cates work on a piece. “We have so much fun singing ‘Cats’ in class because Mr. Resseguie really gets us into it,” Cates said. “We always laugh about the names and the titles.” Photo by Abby Stechmann.

It was weird that leg warmers were back in style. Most people wear them in dance, so to see them as actual clothing was weird. It’s blatantly from the ‘80s too.

I really dislike Ugg boots, especially when girls wear chocolate Uggs with black dresses and leggings. It doesn’t match and doesn’t go together.

I hate super-short skirts. I think it’s really slutty. I just kind of look at them and then look away because I don’t want to hurt their feelings.

Students watch new actors and actresses emerge.

Daniel Day Louis was in ‘There Will Be Blood.’ It was set in one of my favorite time periods, which made the movie more interesting too.

sophomore Grant Wekesser

I loved Ellen Paige in ‘Juno.’ ‘Juno’ was by far my favorite movie this year. She played a hard part extremely well.

freshman Emma Tyler

Nikki Blonsky played Tracy in ‘Hairspray.’ In a musical, you’re supposed to be really bubbly. She played the role well and didn’t seem out of place with other bigger names.

I really like the older songs they play, such as ‘Respect.’ Those songs always put me in a much better mood and make me enjoy school.

My gas is 70 bucks. I don’t look at gas prices anymore. I have to have a job to pay for gas for my Land Rover. Of my $200 paycheck, about $150 goes to gas.

I noticed that even though the price went up, my total price only went up $1.60 or so. People made a big deal out of it but I was pretty indifferent.

Far left: During her fibers class, senior Lauren Cavanaugh works on an embroidery project. “I’d done other sewing stuff, but never embroidery,” Cavanaugh said. “It was simple but fun because we could be creative.” Photo by Nicole Luby. Left: During the Cuban scene in “Guys and Dolls,” seniors Erin Aitken and Thomas Henry drink piña coladas. “It was a fun scene,” Aitken said. “It contrasted with the rest of the show because of the blocking, and it was also the only scene I got to dance in.” Photo by Hannah Brewer.

I know many students smirked when they learned the theme of this yearbook, thanks to the word’s current usage to mean “sketchy.” We knew that would happen but chose to embrace it. After we struggled with another theme which was ultimately too restrictive, the theme “Sketch” opened us up to many new possibilities. Expanding on what we have learned about design in past years, this year we began using Adobe Illustrator CS2 and CS3 far more. Illustrator allowed us to create unique graphic elements such as brushstrokes and frames with a painted look, and invent new text treatments. These elements carried our theme throughout the book and helped us to develop an artsier style. We looked at sketching as not only an artistic process, but also a process of making plans that change when reality happens. We used filling sketches in with color as a metaphor for altering plans based on actuality. With this idea in mind, we created the “Filling in the Sketch” bar which appears on the right side of our spreads. The three photos in each bar are coordinated by a dominant color or color scheme, emphasizing color as an important part of reality and vitality. The bar also helped us to feature more students throughout the book. This book could not have happened without the continuing patience and support of our sales representative John Kelley and customer service representative Jolene Christy. John was always willing to come up to school and help us out, take my worried calls late in the evening, and be flexible with deadlines and problems. Jolene answered all of my questions, worked with everyone at the Walsworth plant to help us out, and cheered me up by telling me I was doing a great job when I felt like I was failing. Both of these people have been amazingly kind, helpful and understanding, and working with them has been such a pleasure. We also owe thanks to our Network Analysts, Rusty Richards and Kevin Jackson. Thank you for devoting so much time to dealing with our myriad computer problems. You made our work possible. I owe a personal thank you to each and every member of my staff. You have been a great group to work with. Singing along to musicals with Maureen, falling off chairs with Emma, laughing the stress off with Sarah, gossiping with Bailey and making lists at Panera with Andrea have made this year so much fun. Thank you to all my staff members, who have taken up part of the responsibility for this book and have really delivered. I have enjoyed working with all of you so much. I would also like to thank the staff of the Harbinger for sharing computers, food and

laughs with us. Hanging out with you guys in the journalism room has always been fun. And I would like to thank DeBe Bramley and Bill Boley for letting us into the journalism room early and staying late with us. One of the most important and constant sources of support throughout this year has been my mom. As a Shawnee Mission School District employee, she has spent long nights in the journalism room to supervise us so that we could keep working when Tate could not be here. She has brought up dinner for our staff whenever necessary, as have many other parents to whom we also owe our thanks. And my mom has been a shoulder to cry on and a source of good advice when I was completely stressed out. And lastly and most importantly, I will never be able give enough thanks to our amazing adviser, Dow Tate. Night after night, after everyone had left school but us and the janitors, Tate waited patiently in the journalism room to allow us to keep working. When I had designer’s block and could not stand to keep working on something, Tate gave me ideas, got me thinking and helped me get through it. At the beginning of the year Tate and I sometimes disagreed about photos or designs, but as the year went on we found ourselves increasingly on the same page. Like everyone else on the Hauberk staff, I have learned so much from Tate. Not only has he been a wonderful adviser, he has made me feel better when I was upset and gotten me through all my stress, both yearbook-related and otherwise. Tate motivated me to take on the job of Editorin-Chief and got me through that job, and even in the midst of the most stressful part of making this book, I am so happy that I decided to do this. Tate, thank you for all that you do. The 526 pages of this book were created entirely by the writers, photographers and designers on the Hauberk staff. These pages are printed on Libery Matte Paper, and the cover is printed on white linen with a gloss varnish. The font Myriad Pro was used for the body copy and captions. Miller Display, Griffith Gothic, Belucian and Enchanted Prairie Dog were used to create headlines and sidebars. The colors used on each spread were eyedropped from the photos. This book was designed in Adobe InDesign CS2 and CS3 on Macintosh computers and laptops. Photos were edited using Adobe Bridge and Adobe Photoshop CS2 and CS3. Our photographers used Nikon photos and equipment. We created certified pdfs using Enfocus Instant PDF 4.0 and uploaded them through the Walsworth program. The books were printed at the Walsworth plant in Marceline, Missouri.

Right: The varsity cheerleaders perform at the Hy-Vee Shootout game. One of the cheers they performed was Manhattan. “It resembles the towers of Manhattan because we get on different levels,” senior Jenny Howard said. “It has three different counts of movement and a lot of snapping and clapping. I love it.” Photo by Sam Bolanovich. Far right: During Environmental Ed, senior Andrew Dellett passes a gopher snake to senior Sophie Unterman. Students were trained in how to handle the animals so they could demonstrate when elementary school children came to their class. “You have to research the animals so you know what to talk about and how the kids are supposed to hold them and pet them so they don’t squeeze them too hard,” Unterman said. Photo by Hannah Brewer. Above right: During Fibers, senior Alicia Anderson paints a silk scarf. Anderson first designed the scarf, then outlined the different areas with gutta, a resist that stops the ink at the lines. Finally she mixed different paints to stain the scarf. “You can do really cool things if you add water [to the paints],” Anderson said. “The hardest thing was the gutta part, because it’s supposed to be in four symmetrical squares to make one big one, so it’s hard to get all the squares right.” Photo by Kate Hardy.

A picture. A moment. An experience. An actuality. The sketches have been filled in with color. The year has passed. Our plans have changed into realities. Neither girls nor boys basketball went to state. An overwhelming number of people turned out at the Democratic caucus at Asbury Church. Boys swimming won state for the fourth year in a row. These unpredictable events made the year unique. Now the color begins to disappear. The experiences fade as they become pieces of the past. But we are able to flip through the pages and call back the memories in full color at any time. And now we look ahead to the future. Making a new plan. Drawing a new sketch.

This was Howland’s last theater production at East. “It’s the first year I’ve really gotten involved, so it’s still exciting and new for me, and also sad because I know that I can’t do it again,” Howland said. “It’s bittersweet.” Photo by Mackenzie Payne.

Students took turns leading and being blindfolded and tried to figure out what parts of school they were taken to. “I was really holding on when we were going up the stairs - I was scared,” McKittrick said. “When I was a freshmen I saw the classes coming into [history teacher John] Nickels’ classroom doing this and so I was really excited to do it when I took Psych.” Photo by Lauren Bleakley.

Above right: At the SHARE garage sale, volunteers Lucy O’Connor, Annmarie Arensberg, Tucker Nelson and Erin Aitkin sort through donated clothes. “A lot of people donated underwear and bras, so that was kind of gross, but we threw all that out,” O’Connor said. “A lot of people found nice stuff – Seven jeans, Lacoste shoes, Ralph Lauren polos. Of course we [the volunteers] all found it and bought it.” Photo by Karen Boomer. Right: At a powderpuff practice, junior Marcus Webb explains a play to the junior team. They practiced every Sunday until the game was rescheduled indefinitely. “The hardest thing to teach was tackling because most of the girls don’t want to get hurt,” Webb said.
