to a great year
This year has been full of ups and downs. Every person has made their own contribution to the book, and we both appreciate all that you have done over the year. Christy Beeder. I know how much clubs were a challenge but you have created some really original spreads and freezing nights in the mini van wouldn’t have been the same without you. Brooke Stanley. You are the designer that we could always count on to have her stuff done weeks in advance. You helped us stay prepared and who knows how words might have been spelled if we didn’t have you checking over all of our dumb mistakes. Bailey Atkinson. You have grown into a talented designer and one of the best interviewers out there thanks to the painful senior sidebar. Thanks for taking time to stay up here with us and helping wherever you could. Sam Benson. We know that being a first year designer can be challenging but you have taken the time to perfect your spreads and have been a big help Stefanie Enger. Our photographer/ designer. I’m so glad that you got to join us after school and spend hours perfecting your spreads. You did an amazing job of picking up design. Emma Collins. I don’t know how we would have survived without the frequent trips the Einstein Brothers and Sonic. I know that you felt overwhelmed with the huge responsibility of profiles, but in the end you were able to create a good looking section. Melanie Trost. I know it must have been hard being in a different hour and so far away from all of us but under the circumstances, you were able to make amazing profile pages. Emily Francis. You were able to hold down the largest number of senior ads to date which was definitely a challenge. You also worked very hard to make the index an intricate part of the book and for that we must thank you, “index queen.” Holly Harvey. Your creativity and enthusiasm has really helped make the ads a great part of the yearbook. You did a great job juggling school and your job. Kelsey Brown. There has definitely been some crazy times but we wouldn’t have been able to control all of those crazy photographers without you. You kept everything incredibly organized and were always there when we needed you Annie Krieg. You kept us laughing harder than anyone else in the room and you helped make Abby’s birthday celebration one of the best yet. Hannah Brewer. The dominant champion, we could always depend on you to take amazing pictures. Hannah Gillaspie. We wouldn’t have survived without your famous back rubs. Thanks for helping identify people with the clubs section. Taylor Gudgel. Thanks for always getting everything in on time, and working hard to get the best pictures possible. You always have a positive attitude and contribute so much to the book. Sarah Andrews. You have grown to be a great photographer and have continued to amaze us with your responsibility and organization. Melissa Blessen. You have always been a great person to count on for solid shots, you have had a great impact on the staff, and it was fun to get to know you this year! Whitney Van Way. You saved us during our last moments of absolute chaos and even though you were in a different hour, you were always able to keep up with your assignments and went above and beyond. Rachel Clarke. You have been a great person to talk to and you have always come after school when we have asked for extra help, even when it didn’t have to do with your assignments. Even though I know it can be frusterating, you have taken the time to reshoot projects until they are perfect.Molly Oeffner. We love your positive outlook on everything. You always had a smile on your face and whenever we were down, you always brightened up our day. Gale Harrington. You were always in a good mood, no matter what craziness was going on in the room. You always took your assignments without complaint and made some of the usually boring stories entertaining. Andrea Tudhope. You have taken the challenge of writing a lot of difficult stories and you have done an amazing job with them. I know you have had to deal with a lot of cut stories, but you have done a great job handling any situation that was thrown your way. Alexandria Norton. Not only are you a great writer, but you were able to take on designing spreads without much help from a partner. Leah Pickett. We really appreciated watching you grow as a writer. Your stories continued to improve throughout the year. Maureen Orth. You have done a great job getting quotes for designers without (too much) complaint. I’ve loved reading your stories. Meghan Benson. Megano getting to know you this year has been...amazing? We’ve all “shared” lots of interesting conversations. You are a great girl and we both love you to death. David Spero. DAVER FLAV! You really have done a great job putting up with all the girls. I know the DVD is going to be great, we can’t wait to see it. Looking back on this year we will always remember the friends we made working on this amazing book. Thanks so much for all the great memories and hard work. We both love each and every one of you. We know you will all do great things next year. We’ll be back to visit don’t worry. Megan and Abby

My freshman year I walking down the aisles of the auditorium, and being the klutz that I am, I fell and hit my head on the seat. I was knocked out. We read “The House of the Spirits” by Isabel Allende. It’s magical realism, which is this Latin American writing style. I like it because it is really descriptive without being wordy. The book covers a lot of social issues – marriage, virginity and abortion.

Snapshot. It’s one word that means so much. Whether it represents the ridiculous amount of pictures we had to sort through or simply reliving the year through photographs. This year we wanted the theme to really capture the year for each individual in the school. Capturing moments in time and focusing on the small things are what our books are all about. We found people’s personal pictures and integrated them into the spreads, whether it was pictures from the sweetheart dance dinner or the foreign exchange students’ favorite pictures from home. This year we found a way to put more personal touches in the book. By focusing on specific days in our division pages and quotes along the folio, we were able to increase our coverage and document the year through memorable moments. We focused on the everyday, both the typical and atypical high school events. This year we added almost 50 pages to the book, making it the largest book in Shawnee Mission East history. We worked hard to integrate our theme throughout every page and section, from the academics pages to the index. We also transitioned to a full color book, by adding a Polaroid border to each ad page, and having both color and black and white ads on the same page. First we would like to thank the man that made it all possible, Tater Tot. Some know him as Dow Tate. Throughout the year, he has put up with our late night deadlines and lack of testosterone in the journalism room with a (nearly) all girl staff. He is always willing to look over our design ideas and give the usual, “That is problematic.” He allowed us to explore our creativity without interfering too much. He has taught us how to order his iced tea (with good ice), but most importantly he has molded us into future journalists. Even though we consider ourselves his children, we can’t forget about his other family, Becky and Morgan, who loaned him to us for so many hours. John Kelley, we really don’t think we could have done this without you. Number five on our speed dial, you were always one call away. No matter what stupid mistakes we made or part numbers we forgot, you were always willing to run up at a second’s notice and even enjoy a late night dinner. With John, there is Jolene Christy, our customer service representative. You kept our spirits up by constantly telling us what a good job we were doing, even when we were thinking it wasn’t true. We know you must have rolled your eyes every time we called, but without you this book would have never been finished. Next our parents. Although you might have questioned what were actually doing when we told you we would be at school until 10:30 p.m., you still looked up names for clubs, drew pictures of music notes, and most importantly, brought food. You have been a shoulder to cry on, someone to vent our frustration to and the best support we could have had. We also need to thank the Harbinger staff, who shared so many long nights in the room with us. We appreciate your willingness to share computers, edit pages and donate food. Without your support, we couldn’t have made it through the year. This book contains 544 amazing pages, personally designed and edited by the hardworking Hauberk staff. It is printed on Liberty Matte Paper, and the cover has a matte finish with a gloss layer over the bar of photo strips. The body copy is Benton Sans and the headlines vary between Californian and Nobel families. We also used our beloved GFY Jeanna to pull our theme through each spread, by including the handwritten aspect. The sidebars are created with Nobel and GFY Jeanna. Colors for each spread were pulled from the pictures featured on the spread, to give each page a cohesive look. The frames and photo strips were given a 15 percent drop shadow. Each spread was designed with InDesign CS2 on Macintosh computers and lap tops. The completed spreads were certified with Enfocus 2.0, sent through the Walsworth uploading program and sent to the plant in Marceline, Missouri. All moments were captured with Nikon cameras and equipment.
