MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Lancer Nation, The 2011-2012 sport’s season is sure to be full of excitement. All the teams got off to a fabulous start last year with a strong showing during the season. The athletes and coaches expect to take their team success to the next level. The women’s tennis team is expected some great things to happen this year as they return both the single and doubles champions. There is only one thing these girls want more than to win a state championship. Last year the football team set a new school record for wins during the regular season finishing 8-1. A first round loss has not dampened their spirits or their goal to win it all. The women’s gymnastics team returns an excellent core of athletes who want to improve on their standing in the league and at State. Volleyball has lost some key players, however the talent which remains is anxious to show their skills on the court. The men’s and women’s cross-country teams once again will have over 300 runners competing for one of the ten spots on varsity. The women’s golf team has some talented players and will not settle for anything less than to win the crowns at league, regional, and State competition. The men’s soccer team got off to a fast start in 2010 and then incurred some tough losses down the stretch. Look for these boys to learn from the past and take their game up a few notches as the season progresses. We want to thank the Booster Club and all the parents who have athletes involved in one or more of our programs. Your generosity (during difficult economic times) and overall support allows us to compete at the highest level in the toughest athletic conference in Kansas. Last year our students made a solid contribution to sportsmanship. No senior class did more to engage students in support of their teams than the Senior Class of 2011. They took on the challenge willingly and as such change the culture of SME. Once again, we ask you to join with our students in creating and keeping an atmosphere of good sportsmanship at all of our contests. Please come out and support our fall teams. There will be plenty of action and excitement throughout the season. Our coaches and athletes worked hard this summer and they deserve the recognition and support from their community. Karl R. Krawitz, Ed.D, Principal Lancer Fans, On behalf of the coaches and student athletes at Shawnee Mission East High School, thank you for your continued and unwavering support of our athletic programs. There is no doubt that this year will once again be a fantastic year for Lancer Athletes. The dedication of our coaches and student athletes and the enthusiasm and support of our student body and community is unmatched and should commended. Going into my first year as athletic director at SME, I am truly humbled to be part of such a great program. The rich tradition of excellence that is Shawnee Mission East, both scholastically and athletically, is something of which we can all be proud. We appreciate everyone’s continued support through your student’s participation in the athletic programs, as well as your membership in the All sports Booster Club. If you are new to the school, the All Sports Booster Club is a great investment in the future of our students and school. The resources that they provide to the students at SME are very beneficial and helpful. Please learn more about this organization and become a member by visiting www.smesports.org . Again, I am excited to be part of this great school and to be able to work with all the students, coaches and community members. I encourage you to show your Lancer Pride and support all our athletes by attending games and cheering on the teams in a positive way. Sam Brown, Athletic Director

Welcome to the 2011-2012 SME Winter Sports Booster Book What is it? This book celebrates the athletes of SME. It is printed three times annually, once for each of the sport seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Advertising revenue from this project provides over 50% of the annual budget of the SME All-Sports Booster Club.
What is the All-Sports Booster Club? Rather than have booster clubs for every sport, in 1968 Athletic Director Dr. Art Newcomer formed the All-Sports Booster Club to support each and every team and the cheerleading program at SME. In 2007, the board voted to begin supplementing the budgets of the marching band and Lancer Dancers.
Where does the Booster Club money go? Grants are provided to each sport. Coaches spend this money on things such as equipment, teaching aides, uniforms, travel, continuing education, and professional memberships. In recent years, funds raised by the Booster Club were used to purchase exercise equipment for the weight room, a new video camera available for use by all sports teams, water chillers for the soccer and cross country teams, a new mat for the gymnastics team, tennis nets, a new pace clock for the pool, swim meet software and a laptop, a laptop for the golf team, a tractor implement for softball, a bleacher system and record boards for track & field, a power blaster for the football team, and funding for the summer speed coach. In the past, funds have been used to purchase the sports trophy case, the equipment garage on the practice field, and the banners that decorate the main gymnasium and the pool.
How can YOU be a part of the All-Sports Booster Club? There are two ways you can financially support Lancer athletics: 1. JOIN THE CLUB! The Booster Club sells memberships annually, starting in August. Members receive passes to get in FREE to all home sporting events!! Multiple sponsorship levels are available and you receive special recognition in this book!
2. BUY AN AD for your business or to express your support for the Lancers! Families and businesses can purchase advertisements in this Sports Booster Book which is widely distributed to the East community. The ads are available in a variety of sizes and prices and your ad is published in all three seasonal editions of the Sports Booster Book. When you buy an ad, you receive two FREE season passes to all home SME athletic events. Advertising opportunities are also available in game day programs and on the web site at www.smesports.org.
