MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Lancer Nation, The 2010-2011 sports season is going to be one you will not want to miss. We got off to a tremendous start last year with a strong showing in all of our fall sports. No question we expect to achieve even more this year. Our football team returned to the State Playoffs for the first time in four years. The change of culture and attitude was electrifying and this year’s group can hardly wait to take it to a level this school has never seen. With a new head coach and a returning cast of players the volleyball team is confident in their goals. The men’s and women’s cross country teams had over 300 runners last year and with so many, great things are bound to happen. The women’s golf team got off to a hot start and with a strong nucleus of players returning. You can bet there will be no let down in their performance. Our men’s soccer team is motivated and determined to be in the mix for a League and State title. With a confident group of young men, their goals could be easily achieved. Finally, and certainly not least, is our women’s tennis team. This group of talented young ladies possesses all the skills to return the State Championship Title to East. We want to thank the Booster Club and all the parents who have athletes involved in one or more of our programs. Your generosity (during difficult economic times) and overall support allows us to be compete at a high level in the toughest conference in Kansas – the Sunflower League. One of our goals last year was to raise the level of student support and behavior at ALL athletic competitions; this same goal is in place again this year. With the help of our student leaders and fans we were able to demonstrate we didn’t have to lack sportsmanship to have fun and provide support to our teams. Join us in continuing this new tradition of excellence on the field and in the stands. I would like to personally invite you to any of our fall season activities. Our coaches and athletes worked hard this summer and they deserve the recognition and support from their community. Come on out and have some fun. I guarantee there will be plenty of action!! Karl R. Krawitz Ed.D, Principal Lancer Fans, On behalf of the coaches and student athletes at Shawnee Mission East High School, thank you for your continued and unwavering support of our athletic programs. There is no doubt that this year will once again be a fantastic year for Lancer Athletics. The dedication of our coaches and student athletes, and the enthusiasm and support of our student body and community is unmatched and should be commended. Going into my first year as Athletic Director at SME, I am truly humbled to be part of such a great program. The rich tradition of excellence that is Shawnee Mission East, both scholastically and athletically, is something of which we can all be proud. We appreciate everyone’s continued support through your student’s participation in the athletic programs, as well as your membership in the All Sports Booster Club. If you are new to the school, the All Sports Booster Club is a great investment in the future of our students and school. The resources that they provide to the students of SME are very beneficial and helpful. Please learn more about this organization and how you can become a member by visiting their website at www.smesports.org. Again, I am excited to be part of this great school and able to work with all the students, coaches, and community members. I encourage you to show your Lancer Pride and support our athletes by attending games and cheering on the teams in a positive way! Jeremy Higgins, Athletic Director

Welcome to the 2010 SME Fall Sports Booster Book What is it? This book celebrates the athletes of SME. It is printed three times annually, once for each of the sport seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Advertising revenue from this project provides over 50% of the annual budget of the SME All-Sports Booster Club.

What is the All-Sports Booster Club? Rather than have booster clubs for every sport, in 1968 Athletic Director Dr. Art Newcomer formed the All-Sports Booster Club to support each and every team and the cheerleading program at SME. In 2007, the board voted to begin supplementing the budgets of the marching band and Lancer Dancers.

Where does the Booster Club money go? Grants are provided to each sport. Coaches spend this money on things such as equipment, teaching aides, uniforms, travel, continuing education, and professional memberships. In recent years, funds raised by the Booster Club were used to purchase exercise equipment for the weight room, a new video camera available for use by all sports teams, water chillers for the soccer and cross country teams, a new mat for the gymnastics team, tennis nets, a new pace clock for the pool, swim meet software and a laptop, a laptop for the golf team, a tractor implement for softball, a bleacher system and record boards for track & field, a power blaster for the football team, and funding for the summer speed coach. In the past, funds have been used to purchase the sports trophy case, the equipment garage on the practice field, and the banners that decorate the main gymnasium and the pool.

How can YOU be a part of the All-Sports Booster Club? There are two ways you can financially support Lancer athletics: 1. JOIN THE CLUB! The Booster Club sells memberships annually, starting in August. Members receive passes to get in FREE to all home sporting events!! Multiple sponsorship levels are available and you receive special recognition in this book!

2. BUY AN AD for your business or to express your support for the Lancers! Families and businesses can purchase advertisements in this Sports Booster Book which is widely distributed to the East community. The ads are available in a variety of sizes and prices and your ad is published in all three seasonal editions of the Sports Booster Book. When you buy an ad, you receive two FREE season passes to all home SME athletic events. Advertising opportunities are also available in game day programs and on the web site at www.smesports.org.

Dear Lancer fans, The Shawnee Mission East All Sports Booster Club is the premier high school sports booster club in the Kansas City area. The Booster Club’s primary goal is to support excellence in athletics at SME. The Booster Board is a dedicated group of volunteer parents who help raise funds and manage fund distribution to support all SME sports teams, the cheerleaders, the drill team and the band. Board members are nominated each spring and if elected, are invited to serve on the board for three years. The Booster Board raises funds by receiving annual membership contributions and selling advertising in our fall, winter, and spring sports books, game day programs and our www.smesports.org web site. Thanks to the generosity of these advertisers, the Booster Club is able to provide about $40,000 in support to SME athletic programs each year. Please remember to support our advertisers with your dollars when purchasing the wide range of services and products offered by our very loyal Lancer community. In recent years, the Booster Club has provided funding for the purchase of such items as exercise equipment for our new weight room, cheer mats, video cameras, editing software, and tennis nets. In addition, the Booster Club provides an unrestricted grant annually to each team to support the needs of that team. The Booster Club also provides funding for SME coaches to attend coaching clinics and participate in coaching organizations. The Booster Club recognizes and is proud to support the dedicated coaches at SME and the outstanding Lancer athletes, cheerleaders, dancers, and band members. We are here to provide them with the tools they need to continue their success. We thank all of you who have supported the SME All Sports Booster Club in the past and we invite everyone to continue this great tradition of support during the 2010-2011 school year. We are building on a long tradition of success, and with your help, the coming year promises to be another great one for Lancer students, parents, and fans! Good luck to our coaches and players!
