he past is not only where we come from, but it is our heritage and our future. In this issue we take a glance back in time not only in our own lives but the influence it has on the present. Our reflections begin with “In Her Words.” These brides have shared the coveted wedding gown with their mother, daughter or sister and also the significance of that memorable day. Vintage trends of the late 19th and 20th centuries are the inceptions of the modern day weddings. In our fashion pages we demonstrate how a half century of gown designs have made an imprint on the styles of today. Step back in time starting in the early 1900’s of the Victorian Era and the ‘white’ wedding gown was introduced by royalty ending in the 1950’s when our own Grace Kelly became the Princess of Monaco. In present day we “rock” with trendy bridesmaid and tuxedo fashion that is infused with simplistic and traditional details. Discover how your local cake & floral designers have taken the classic design consistencies of lace, ruffles, bows, pearls and the wedding signature of a monogram to create picture perfect ensembles for the fashion forward brides of today. In this issue celebrity contributors and professionals, offer insights to assist every bride with etiquette, design styles and new trends from the past, present and future. Guarantee your spot in Southern Bride Magazine. You can recount your story with family and friends by purchasing a one or two-page Wedding Announcement to be featured in our Wedding Album. SOMETHING NEW for Southern Bride Alabama! There were so many wonderful Vintage “Real Weddings” submitted it was very hard to select one winner for the Cover Contest, so we decided to select TWO! Even though the contents of the publication will remain the same, we are refreshing the cover and we will have a different cover for Summer and a different cover for Fall. We love to get your submissions and you never know the next cover might be YOU!

My piece of advice: Family traditions and your past are the vein of your existence. Respect it, and hold it close to your heart. ~ Lynn Walker, Editor ~

“Let your mother plan the reception!! The surprise was more than incredible!” - Evie Welden

Family Traditions

By Stephanie Bloomquist

h e First Encounter: Evie and Lee were set up on a blind date by Evie’s grandmother. Lee was skeptical of a blind date at first, but decided to give this one a try - and it’s a wonderful thing that he did. Lee and Evie’s first date was in December 2008 at a coffee shop in Birmingham, where they talked for hours. However, they didn’t begin seriously dating until February of 2009. Evie said she knew Lee was “the one” after he surprised her with a special trip to Atlanta. “On that trip I saw he was responsible and a true gentleman,” Evie said. The two were engaged in September allowing only a few months until the big day. Unlike some girls, Evie didn’t grow up dreaming about her wedding day, but she still knew she wanted, a vintage theme. Knowing that she and her mother, Lauren, shared nearly the same style and taste, Evie asked her mother to be in charge of the planning. In Preparation: “Mom planned the whole reception, all I did was taste the food,” Evie said. “I had no expectations. My only request was, I wanted it to be as authentic as possible. She treated it as a surprise party for us, and we just showed up.” Lauren’s planning included tracking down vintage fur stoles for each of the bridesmaids and girls in the wedding. On the day of Evie’s engagement, her mother started looking for them. Many of the stoles had old names in them from the previous owners and they were from all around the country. “I just tried to go back in time and think about what it was like,” Lauren said. “My mother helped me with some ideas from her own wedding.” Lauren shared that her mother had made her own wedding dress, and Evie chose to wear her grandmother’s veil.” The Big Day: Evie and Lee were married at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. On the day of the wedding, Evie arrived several hours early to get ready. “We all went into the bride’s room and spent the whole day together getting ready,” Evie said. “It kept me calm, I didn’t want to have a chance to get nervous.”

The day was filled with great traditions. Individual pictures were taken prior to the wedding keeping in tradition with the bride and groom not seeing each other before the ceremony. Evie wore her mother’s unaltered wedding gown. Her grandmother made flowers for the bridesmaid dresses to give them a vintage feel and constructed Evie’s garter from family heirloom laces. “We wanted the ceremony to be clean, elegant and modest,” Evie said, “a candlelit ceremony with a few flowers and a large cross, but nothing on the pews.” The ceremony was short, about 25 minutes, which even included getting the 42-person wedding party down the aisle. The bride and groom wanted a simple ceremony. “It is a time for a man and woman to give their vows to each other, the Lord and their family,” Evie said. As the bride and her father entered, everyone was seated and Evie remembers it feeling very reverent as she walked down the aisle. Evie and Lee arrived at their reception via a 1957 cobalt blue Cadillac keeping with the vintage theme. The car, the music and the rest of the reception were a complete surprise to both of them. Entering the reception was like going back in time. Hydrangeas in light blue hues and greenery enhanced the décor of the room. The cake, a focal point in the center of the room and more than five feet tall, was adorned with more than 200 fresh flowers. Lee and Evie used the same cake cutting knives and toasting glasses her grandparents used at their wedding. “The best part was seeing her face when she walked in,” Lauren said. “We had incorporated many of our family treasures in the décor. It was so much better than she ever dreamed it would be.” “It was a flawless wedding; nothing went wrong, or at least I didn’t know about it if it did,” Evie said. The Retreat: The couple honeymooned at the One and Only Palmilla Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for six days. One highlight of the trip was horseback riding on the beach, but most of all they enjoyed just relaxing and spending time together.

By Alene Gamel

proper etiquette

I Do! I Do! Wedding Planning & Consulting idoidoweddingplanning.com

Several months I ago I had the privilege of meeting Peggy Post. I was very excited to be able sit at her feet and glean all manner of wedding etiquette. While I did not literally sit at her feet, I did get to soak up her wisdom and pick her brain with several other top wedding planners from around the country. I would like to share with you today the essence of what Peggy had to say about wedding etiquette for the new millennium. She shared first and foremost, that etiquette is not just a set of rules made up by an old lady! This particular old lady, Emily Post, who happens to be Peggy’s great-grandmother in law, wrote the first book of etiquette in 1922, to teach us how to show consideration and respect for our friends, family, and business associates. It was an immediate best seller. Emily taught that the goal of etiquette is to avoid harming our relationships. This really is the same goal we have today. Wedding etiquette is not about rules to follow, but about principles for living. Peggy stressed several of these principles, the first being consideration. We are to think before acting and making decisions. Always ask yourself: how will this decision affect others? The second principle is respect. We are to show interest in others feelings, and in who they are. The third principle is honesty. We are always to be sincere, truthful, and tactful. Our everyday manners are a reflection of how we live out these three basic principles. The wedding and social etiquette of our day is to give us guidelines for our decision making. These guidelines are fluid, meaning that they change as our social structure and social paradigms change through each generation. Remember that all traditions have a beginning somewhere. Truly, it is OK to depart from tradition, to question our traditions, and to choose those that are meaningful. Hopefully, what never changes, are the three basic principles above. Remember‌ the goal of all etiquette is to avoid hurt feelings. So, if we make all social decisions with this goal in mind, I believe we will show consideration, respect, and honesty to those around us.

Who do we invite to the wedding? Do we include children? Who pays for what? What do I do when guests do not send in their RSVP’s? Where do stepparents sit? Do I have to send thank you notes? Most of these common questions can be answered pretty easily if you think about the principles above. How will your decision making affect others feelings? Are you being sincere, caring, and tactful in working through these situations? Just as a note, these principles do not just apply to wedding etiquette, but to all social situations. When in doubt, if at all possible, always make the decision that will avoid hurt feelings. Now, this does not mean that we let others use or abuse us, but it does mean that every time we can, we are to show consideration, respect, and sincerity.

I think we can all benefit from learning these basic principles and using them in our daily lives, not just when planning a wedding! We need a world that is softer, more compassionate, and more caring, not more rules to follow. That will never change!

Nearly three decades later, his passion has grown into the world’s largest retailer of old and new china, crystal, silver and collectibles. Kiss On The Green

T

By Stephani Bloomquist

h e First Encounter: Leigh Anne Penfield and Scott Talbot fell in love on the golf course. For her first job out of college, Leigh Anne was a buyer at a golf pro shop in California and Scott was an assistant pro. The couple would hang out after work on the course and ended up dating for almost three years. One evening after work, Scott suggested they take a bike ride to watch the sunset over Manhattan Beach. Just as the sun was setting they walked on to the beach and Scott knelt down on one knee. Leigh Anne was completely caught of guard, and remembers how wonderful the proposal was. “I had the inner dialogue of, ‘Oh my gosh, this is the moment, the moment you hear about all of your life,” she said. In Preparation: Within a day or so of hearing about the engagement, Leigh Anne’s mother had a few locations in mind for the wedding. A plantation-style home was the place they were hoping to book, because they wanted to have freedom with the number of guests and set-up times. Leigh Anne said after visiting a few other locations, they visited the Oaks Plantation in Pike Road, Alabama, and decided it was the “blank canvas” they wanted to work with. They decided on an “oak theme” and integrated it into the décor and invitations. Bridesmaids even wore oak earrings. Leigh Anne said oak is a good symbol for marriage, as it represents strength, loyalty and love, so oak was even incorporated into the floral arrangements, which were designed by Leigh Anne’s mother and aunt. Leigh Anne recalls the planning as a pure collaboration of hers and her mother’s ideas. “It was better than I ever could have imagined,” she said. “Especially as a southern girl, your mom kind of dreams about your wedding for you and my mom had the best picture in her head of mine.” Seersucker suits were chosen for the men to wear because it was outdoors and Leigh Anne loves how they look. Some of the groomsmen gave her a hard time about wearing suits, but at the end of the night the groomsmen admitted they enjoyed wearing them.

The Big Day: On the day of the wedding, the weather was beautiful. Leigh Anne refers to it as “Sunday at the Masters” in regards to the weather, with bright blue sky and green grass, which just happened to match the wardrobe of the wedding party perfectly. Even though the ceremony was held outside, Leigh Anne’s mother and Scott’s father worked together to build an altar. It was special to Leigh Anne because it was built by a member of both families. Prayer kneeling benches were also were also used when the couple said the Lord’s prayer. Having the perfect pastor and gazing into the eyes of her new husband were highlights of the ceremony for Leigh Anne. “I just tried to remember that this is the part about Scott and I,” she said. The fact that her grandparents were sitting in the front row was another highlight for her. The tables were decorated with heirloom linens, pewter and silver, based on what it might look like when visiting your stylish Southern grandmother’s house, and creating the underlying theme of “Vintage.” Of course, golf was incorporated into the scheme of things with the groom’s cake, which was topped with blue, green and white golf balls. Scott sang “Sweet Home Alabama” with the band at the reception and starting it by saying, “I’ve got a Yankee song for all of you Southerners.” It was untraditional, but Leigh Anne and the guests loved it. The highlight of the reception, for her, was all the dancing, and watching her guests have a great time. When it was time to leave their guests for the night, it was under a “5-iron salute.” The Retreat: The newlyweds delayed their official honeymoon a bit because they were attending the wedding of one of Leigh Anne’s friends in St. Lucia. They didn’t want to go right back into reality, so they had a “mini moon” weekend at Ross Bridge Resort in Birmingham. Three weeks later, they took their trip to St. Lucia and stayed at a Sandals resort. “It was a treasure spending that much undivided time with my new husband in a relaxing, beautiful, tropical setting,” Leigh Anne said. “Typically, our work schedules don’t allow us to have weekends together. So, having a week alone without any distractions was the real highlight!”

“I DO” need

insurance

By Dave Ramsey

In the first year of marriage I advise couples to stick to the basics. Together they should get on a budget, pay down debts, save money and get insured. We all hate insurance until we need it. It’s not glamorous, but insurance is a must!

Health Insurance

Long Term Disability Insurance

Medical bills are one of the biggest causes of bankruptcy. Not having health insurance is not an option. Many of us don’t like to think about all the ins and outs of insurance, but for a young family just starting out there are affordable plans. A health savings account (HSA) is an excellent alternative to the usual, expensive health insurance plan. Most young married couples have no kids and rarely go to the doctor. HSA can save you hundreds of dollars a month but still provide quality health care coverage. An HSA allows also you to save for medical expenses in a taxfree savings account. Look for large deductibles in order to lower your monthly premiums.

Life Insurance

If you are thirty-two years old, you are twelve times more likely to become disabled than to die by age sixty-five. The best place to buy disability insurance is through your work at a fraction of the cost. You can usually get coverage that equals from 50 to 70 percent of your income.

Homeowners Insurance The Legacy Drawer This is one of the best things my wife Sharon and I have done for each other. The Legacy Drawer is a file drawer in our study that has everything one of us would need if something happened to the other one. It has letters of instruction on everything in there: a full will, a full estate plan, all of our investments, copies of insurance information, etc. Many of us think the worst couldn’t happen to us until it does. Insurance is a reality. It’s also a responsible way to manage your money. The key to becoming wealthy is to get out of debt and stay out of debt. By getting quality insurance, you are protecting yourself from a lifetime of money problems.

The best and most affordable type of life insurance to buy is term life. The idea is that while you are building a family and wealth together, you need a cushion should the unthinkable happen. Then, when you are 57 years old and the kids are grown and gone, the house is paid for, and you have $700,000 in mutual funds, you’ll become self-insured. That means when your 20-year term is up, you shouldn’t need life insurance at all – because with no kids to feed, no house payment and $700,000, your spouse would be able to manage if you die without insurance.

Whether you rent or own a home, you need homeowners insurance. This will protect the contents of your home. There are two things to remember when shopping for this kind of insurance. First, get a policy that has a high deductible. Second, get a policy that has guaranteed replacement costs. If something happens to your home and you have a policy without guaranteed replacement costs, you will only be covered for the value of your home at the time you took out the policy. That’s bad news because most homes increase in value.

Inseparable Fate

Lindsey Gilmore & Jacob East 04/24/10 Gulf Shores, AL

“Take it one day at a time. Try not to think of the hundred things on your to do list. Just do a little at a time. - Lindsey Gilmore

Photography byPosh Images, poshimagesonline.com

Inseparable Fate

T

By Lindsey Gilmore

h e First Encounter: Jacob and Lindsey met for the first time in 2003 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he attended LSU. Lindsey was in town from Mobile, AL, for a football game and a friend introduced them. They immediately hit it off, as they are both extremely goofy and live to make others laugh. They began what developed into a long distance relationship that lasted for about a year, and decided to go their separate ways, chalking things up to “bad timing.” As fate would have it, they reunited three years later after running into each other in Lafayette, Louisiana at a local restaurant. They were both surprised and excited to hear how each of them had maintained feelings for the other even after the years apart. From that day, they have been inseparable. Jacob’s proposal was sweet, simple and intimate. “After cooking me dinner, he followed me into the kitchen, as I was grabbing more wine, snuck up behind me and dropped to his knee. I turned around to see a beautiful oval cut ring and Jacob’s huge grin asking me to make him the luckiest guy in the world.” Lindsey recalls. “He had kept the ring hidden for over a month trying to find a special time to ask me, but as it turns out, it could not have been more perfect... just like us.” In Preparation: Lindsey did most of the wedding planning herself. “I have always wanted to get married on the beach. I did some research and decided that The Beach Club in Gulf Shores, Alabama was the perfect place.” She said. “I spent countless hours on the internet and perusing bridal magazines looking at dresses, centerpieces and pictures of real weddings, trying to decide exactly what I liked.” Planning a wedding from 500 miles away, proved to be challenging, but not impossible. Being from Mobile, Lindsey still had many wonderful friends who were eager to recommend vendors in the area. The Big Day: The wedding was held at The Beach Club in Gulf Shores, AL. Plans for an outdoor wedding were made for both the ceremony and reception. The ceremony was to be on the beach with the reception on the veranda overlooking the ocean. As with any outdoor occasion, you can never predict the weather and as

fate would have it, there were intermittent rain and thunderstorms, and the festivities were moved indoors. Lindsey said. “You can’t control the weather, so I figured that I might as well “dance in the rain” as they say. I just refused to let anything ruin this wonderful day.” The ceremony was set in a 1940’s vintage style with a single violinist playing as the bride graced the isle wearing silk taffeta with a sweetheart neckline and mermaid skirt. To add to the vintage style, she wore an ivory colored bird cage veil faceted by an antique style rhinestone, pearl, and feather brooch, and antique pearl clip earrings. The reception was kicked off in a unique fashion with the couple being introduced to the tune of “Sweet Home Alabama”. “The room was illuminated by, what seemed like, a thousand votive candles.” Lindsey said. The guestbook table was adorned with antique pearls, perfume bottles, and a tiny birdcage along with pictures of the bride’s vintage style bridal shoot displayed in antique style frames. “I surprised Jacob with a picture, on the groom’s cake table, of me in my wedding dress, pulled up revealing cowboy boots.” She laughed. When it was time for this magical night to come to an end, Lindsey and Jacob exited through a courtyard, where family and friends were waiting to give them a starry farewell with brightly lit sparklers. “It was a beautiful ending to an unforgettable night.” Lindsey says. “It was simply a celebration of the best day of our lives and the day I began my married life with my best friend.” The Retreat: The couple honeymooned in the Mayan Riviera, Mexico, staying for a week at the Secrets Silver Sands Resort. “We lounged around the pool, dined at the eight different restaurants, swam with the dolphins, and explored Chichen Itza (Mayan ruins).” Lindsey said. “It was wonderful to just relax in the sun after all the wedding planning.”

vintage for the Modern Day Wedding One of the hottest trends in today’s modern weddings is all about looking to the past – into everything vintage and antique. Couples today are choosing to infuse their wedding with everything old while making it feel new again. The trend goes much farther than renting a vintage car for the wedding day. It’s in the way the party looks, the bride & groom’s chosen attire and the way the event is documented.

Brides love all things vintage including birdcage veils which drape just over the forehead to the lash line and are adorned with feathers, beads and buttons. These trendsetting brides accent their gowns with shrugs made from lace used in their grandmother’s wedding gowns and choose little details like cocktail rings or vintage chandelier earrings that appear plucked from a local antique jewelry store. Grooms are also embracing the trend of vintage in their attire by wearing suits instead of rented tuxedos. Often the suits are made by tailors and are in tones of brown, tan or grey instead of traditional black which makes it feel more bespoke and handmade. The bouquets that are chosen also have a vintage and ruffled feeling to them by using peonies, ranunculus and English garden roses, or calla lilies and hydrangea accented with more modern twists of crystal beading, lace stem wraps and luxurious feathers. These little twists take the bouquets from the ordinary to the extraordinary and make it more memorable and meaningful. The ceremonies and receptions that have vintage inspired elements are a lot of fun to put together. Scouring the internet for vintage cameras, books, chalkboards, typewriters, crystals and old buttons can be time consuming but will also pay off at the wedding by having something very unique that your guests have not experienced before. Look for mismatched containers and props that have a bit of wear on them – they are more authentic that way. Rent damask linens and wrap your napkins in vintage ribbon accented with crystal pins – all mismatched, of course - found at an online auction or local used clothing store. Color is also a wonderful way to convey a vintage themed wedding. For example, try using tea stained lace overlays on lilac toned linen and soft tones of peach and crème flowers. Mixing and matching the linen colors can also be an effective way of showcasing your theme. Using tones of pinks to blush and crème along with flowers that appear picked from the garden in tones of crème, green and plum in silver revere bowls of different sizes is another way showcase vintage color palettes. Adding silver or gold candlesticks with tall tapers interspersed gives the table an old world appearance.

otel Magnolia, located in the heart of downtown Foley, Alabama, was built in 1908 by John Burton Foley, founder of the city of Foley. It is presently owned by Mrs. Marjorie Snook who, as a young girl dreamed of rocking on the front porch. Mrs. Snook’s late husband, John, bought the hotel after World War II and refurbished it. The glass in the front door of the Hotel came from John Snook’s grandfather’s home in Ohio. Five U.S. Presidents have passed through these doors. Since 1996, Tate Farms has been best known as THE fall family fun destination in North Alabama; however, in recent years it is becoming known as a Southern wedding venue for bridal parties, rehearsals, weddings and receptions offering catering, linens, floral and event planning for events at the farm. Tate Farms 256.828.8288 tatefarmspumpkins.com

REAL WEDDINGS

When Two Become One

Aimee Wolk & Johathan Mars 10/30/09 Huntsville, AL

“I would advise couples to personalize their wedding with small touches, symbolic of the two of them.”

- Aimee Wolk

When Two Become One

T

By Ashley Riddle

h e First Encounter: When Aimee Wolk stepped into Starbucks that day, she was in for more than just the coffee break she’d bargained for. As she stood in line to order her usual latte, she noticed a handsome man sitting across the small New York City coffee shop. She picked up her cup and made the first move, taking the seat next to him with a grin. Conversation was struck and it wasn’t long before the handsome man, Jonathan Mars, asked for her number. Even though neither one was looking for a relationship at the time, the romance began. The couple’s first date followed shortly, as did their constant companionship. One day Jonathan suggested that they have a picnic in Central Park, one of their favorite date activities, so Aimee had no reason to think anything was out of the ordinary. As she approached their meeting spot, she saw Jonathan standing near a tree. As she got closer, he knelt to one knee and asked Aimee for her hand in marriage. He presented her with a pink diamond ring, just as she had dreamed about. The non-traditional choice was perfect for the bride-to-be and set the stage for the wedding style yet to come. In Preparation: In a whirlwind weekend Aimee and Jonathan flew to the bride’s hometown and wedding location, Huntsville, Alabama to knock out the planning. The Roundhouse, a charming space that complemented the vintage-inspired details of this unique wedding, was the venue of choice. To match the bold color of her pink engagement ring, the bride chose a non-traditional deep eggplant fabric for her dress. Aimee, a New York City fashion designer, and co-owner of the clothing line Sarah Claire and Esther handmade the dress with the help of her business partner Sara. They even made the bottom layer of the dress detachable so that she would have no problem “getting funky” on the dance floor at the reception. Aimee, a long-time employee of renowned fashion designer Kay Unger, enlisted the designer’s assistance with the bridesmaid dresses. “Kay herself was helping us put them together at the last minute,” Amy remembers. The bridesmaids sported deep purple heels and another unique accessory: they carried paper fans in place of a bouquet. The bride’s bouquet also had a unique twist; pink roses adorned with bird feathers.

The Big Day: Having an intimate feel was important to the couple, so the guests seats were arranged in a circle around the alter in order to ensure everyone had a good view. Each program was a vintage bound book that they transformed into wedding programs entitled When Two Become One: The Marriage by Aimee Wolk and Jonathan Mars. Inspired by their coffee shop beginnings, and as a special gift to the couple, the wedding planners added their own touch to the reception, a “coffee shop” area with lounge chairs where guests were offered coffee-shop favorites. Instead of the traditional Bride’s cake, Aimee chose to use a recipe of her grandmother’s called Charlotte, a custard-like dessert, topped with blackberries. Glazed Doughnuts, a favorite of the groom’s, were also found in place of the groom’s cake. “I really felt like our guests had a genuinely good time,” Aimee recalls. The Retreat: For the Honeymoon, it was off to Aruba. After a hectic year of planning and do-it-yourself wedding projects, they were delighted to spend most of their days relaxing on the beach or by the pool. “One of our absolute favorite things about the resort was the Tiki Bar beside the pool. They had the best brick oven pizza! I can’t even count how many of those we ate.” The bride laughs. There were golf carts to carry them from one side the resort to the other, and they did take enough time away from relaxing to go snorkeling, and kayaking.

Marriage Advice

here comes the big day... breathe

By Mallory Lucier-Greer, M.S

Here it comes, the “Big Day!” You are holding it together, and you are anything but Bridezilla or the Absent Groom. You have been open minded; worked to avoid stepping on toes; stuck to your budget…for the most part; and have checked and double checked your to-do list. You are ready! Right? What happens when your precious nephew starts screaming during the vows? Or your pa-in-law shows up in an outfit you did NOT approve? Or heaven forbid your dog runs away on your wedding day?! Let me take you back about a year to my (really, our!) Big Day. The ceremony and reception were beautiful, and in an effort to soak every minute of the day, we invited friends and family over to continue the celebration. We hopped in the car headed home (MARRIED!). I was smiling and overjoyed! Then, I look at my sweet husband whose face is blank. My first thought is, “No! Something was in my teeth for the pictures!” He says, “Cookie Monster is missing!” My heart stops. I imagine you are wondering who/what Cookie Monster is. Well, he is the world’s loveliest and most well-behaved (wink, wink) Chihuahua. He is my little bud who holds a special place in my heart, because for a while, it was just us – me and my 5 lb. roommate and guard dog. Our friends had gone to the house to get things organized. Apparently, Cookie Monster was frightened and took off. He ran 1/3 of a mile to the Krystal’s on the corner, across a four lane road (!!), through someone’s yard, and into the woods. Did I mention he was wearing a puppy tuxedo? Imagine a 5 lb. dog in a tux sprinting across a busy road with a clan of people in wedding attire chasing him! This was NOT on my wedding day to-do list! Thirty minutes later, my makeup was ruined from crying, my legs were itching, and my dress was dirty from walking through the woods (yes, still in my dress). Then, I looked up and cried for another reason. I saw my husband, my family, my new in-laws, and my friends – the people I love – tromping through the brush searching without question. I was surrounded by amazing people who understood the meaning of love.

I am happy to report that we eventually found Cookie Monster and continued to celebrate. With all the planning and stress that accompanies a wedding, the best plan is to breathe and soak up the glory and meaning of the day. Things will go wrong. That’s ok. The wedding is only an event; a healthy marriage is the goal. In studies conducted with couples in long-term, healthy marriages, no one reports that ‘a great wedding day’ was what held them together for 25+ years. Instead, couples cite factors including commitment, common goals, and loyalty as the ties that held them together. As the day approaches, I hope that you too will plan more for your marriage than the wedding.

Love at First Fumble

“Go with the flow,

have fun, and enjoy this special time in your life.” - Megan Bird

Love at First Fumble

T

By Julie Skinner

h e First Encounter: In the fall of 2005, Megan met Ross while playing on her sorority’s flag football team. Ross, along with several other football players at Western Kentucky, helped coach the team. Though Ross had spotted Megan several times around campus and while coaching her team, it was not until a mutual friend set them up on a date that they had a chance to really “click.” After that date night, the two were inseparable. Megan could be found at every Western Kentucky football game supporting Ross, and Ross never failed to show at Megan’s Intramural football games or sorority events. In Preparation: There was no contest when it came to picking a location for the wedding, since both Megan and Ross longed to get married on the beach. Megan knew the perfect place. Since she was just a newborn, Megan’s parents have had a house on Anna Maria Island in Florida where they would vacation every Easter. “I always dreamed as a little girl that I would get married there,” Megan says. Megan had an absolute blast during the planning process, and enjoyed tying all the intricate details together. She only tried on six dresses until realizing that the first dress was the dress. Megan’s mother is a talented floral designer who has worked her magic on all of the flowers at her daughters’ weddings, including Megan’s. The Big Day: July 3rd proved to be a perfect day for a beautiful beach wedding. Megan recalls the bittersweet feeling of walking up the deck to see her father with a tear in his eye. He walked her down the aisle to marry the love of her life, Megan was in tears herself. Megan and Ross used sand during the ceremony in lieu of a unity candle. This was special to the couple, since Megan combined sand from Anna Maria Island with Ross’s sand from Destin, Fl., his family’s own traditional vacation spot. While saying their vows, Megan and Ross could feel the sweet warmth of sunshine on their skin, the sand beneath their toes and hear the waves gently crashing. Both were moved by this perfect

moment. “Looking up at my husband during our vows brought me to tears.” Megan says. “You could definitely see that he was choked up a little. It was so sweet!” The Retreat: Megan and Ross enjoyed their honeymoon on the island of St. Lucia, where they stayed at two different locations. The first part of the honeymoon was all about relaxation, while the second part was all about play. They enjoyed a hot tub inside their room, relaxing at the spa, eating some delectable food and of course, basked in being the new Mr. and Mrs. Dickens!

romance in

the city New York City, NY

“New York!” “Concrete jungle where dreams are made of - there’s nothing you can’t do - Now you’re in New York!” It was shortly after my trip to New York City that I first heard the song. “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys, and now I can’t get it or New York City out of my mind. It was a beautiful day in November when we arrived at La Guardia, and I had made arrangements for a “Town Car” to take us to the hotel and I highly recommend it. There are many websites to help with information about where to stay, where to go, what to eat, Broadway shows and special events, I highly recommend starting at nycgo.com. I also recommend purchasing a CityPass, this is a great way to get the lay of the land which includes a double decker bus tour with very informative and interesting guides to help you plan your itinerary. When selecting a place to stay in the city you need to make a list of your wants and needs. The selection of hotels is so diverse, it will not be a problem finding the right location to accommodate your needs. Your friends, your family and co-workers will all have favorites to 88

event. Go to Marmara-Manhattan.com for reservation information..

Here are three distinctly different exceptaional locations I would like to share:

For those that have come for Broadway and the city night life, I would recommend moving a little closer to downtown to the Carlton Hotel in midtown Manhattan at 88 Madison Avenue. Originally opened in 1904 as the Hotel Seville, the Carlton Hotel recently underwent a multimillion dollar transformation, enhancing the rich historic nature while integrating luxury services and amenities, including complimentary high speed and wireless internet access, complimentary fitness center, 42” flat screen LCD Televisions, iPod docking station and radio, as well as being 100% non-smoking and pet friendly (25lb limit). The Carlton Hotel offer special packages to accommodate your special desires from shopping to romance or check-in to one of their 625 square foot Empire Suites, including one bedroom with two full size beds and a separate parlor, and best of all, a view of the Empire State Building. Go to CarltonHotelNY.com for more information about what the Carlton Hotel has to offer.

If you would like to have the ability to go down to the corner market and pick up some fresh produce or bakery goods and sit out on the balcony for a romantic dinner or breakfast, I recommend that you check out the Marmara Manhattan Luxury Hotel & Residence with condo style accommodations including a full kitchen, living area and one or two bedrooms and baths. The Marmara Manhattan is located in the Upper East Side at 301 east 94th at 3rd. The neighborhood is truly that, with a plethora of corner flower markets, bakeries, eateries and fresh produce stands. You are also within walking distance to Central Park, the Guggenheim Museum, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, yet only a bus or subway ride away from those big city lights. This is also a perfect location to accommodate families if you happen to be in town for a wedding or special

 Kimberly Hotel, Bedroom One of my favorite boutique hotels is The Kimberly Hotel, at 145 East 50th Street, a hidden treasure, located in the heart of midtown and within walking distance to fabulous shopping, Rockefeller Center, the Museum of Modern Art as well as romantic, intimate, trendy restaurants and wine bars. The staff is always friendly and eager to accommodate your every need. All rooms are elegantly appointed in European luxury with all the amenities needed to stay in touch with your busy life and more. A complimentary membership to all nine New York Health and Racquet Clubs is available to use during your stay, just in case you didn’t walk enough while you were out sightseeing. The spacious yet cozy, luxury one-bedroom suites, offer the all comforts of home including a living area with wet-bar, marble-tiled bathrooms and balconies for viewing the New York City lights, that will inspire you. Go to KimberlyHotel.com and start planning your next Romantic Getaway. I believe it had been 15 years since the last time I was in New York City and now I plan on returning every year to re-energize and bring back that “Empire State of Mind.”

Across the street from Brookgreen Gardens is the Huntington Beach State Park where you can bicycle or segway around the park’s salt marshes, photograph birds, turtles, crabs and alligators thriving in their natural habitat. To admire the Grand Strand’s most beautiful beaches, take a drive on Pawleys Island. Stop at the Sea View Inn, to request a reservation for a spectacular homemade Lowcountry breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Sea View has been hosting guests since 1937. Listen for the dinner bell while you enjoy a bottle of brought in wine, casually sipped as you rock in a white weathered rocking chair on the oceanfront porch. Before leaving the island, catch a sunset on the marsh side of Pawleys. Savor the painted horizon, inhale the air flowing across the salty sea marsh and soulfully appreciate the power of seaside solitude. From the north to the south, ambience prevails here, making the Grand Strand a popular destination to create memories that will keep you coming back for more. C

anterbury United Methodist Church in Mountain Brook, Alabama was the setting for the wedding ceremony of Kathleen Cumbest and Dodd Mullican on March 6, 2010. Kathleen walked down the aisle in a stunning dress designed by Priscilla of Boston and carried a gorgeous bouquet in shades of cream and ivory. After a beautiful and very traditional ceremony, bride and groom were whisked away to the reception at the Summit Club, on the 32nd floor of the Regions-Harbert Plaza. While guests were arriving, Kathleen and Dodd had a very romantic private dinner, overlooking the city. During the evening guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet in rooms filled with lavish flowers, and soft candlelight. Surrounded by incredible custom lighting, and the lights of the city twinkling far below, guests danced the night away to the band Drivetrain. Alene Gamel of I Do, I Do! worked with Kathleen for more than 6 months to plan this event that was just what the bride envisioned. Her colors of champagne, ivory, and cream, were softened by the hundreds of candles set throughout, and reflected her style that was simple, elegant, and very romantic. 102

ontgomery’s historic First Methodist Church served as an idyllic setting for the vintage inspired ceremony of Leah Killough and Davis Prince on March 20, 2010. Leah and planner Alene Gamel of I Do, I Do! worked closely to bring about a classic, timeless, and romantic feel, using colors of soft pink and champagne. Leah wore a Christos gown featuring re-embroidered ivory Alencon lace. Her custom veil was made of silk tulle from her mother’s wedding veil, and she carried her grandparent’s wedding rings tied onto her bouquet along with her grandmother’s handkerchief. Around her neck was a wedding gift from Davis; the pearl necklace that his mother received on her wedding day from his dad 31 years ago, with a new diamond clasp. Wynlakes Country Club set the scene for the gorgeous reception. After dancing the night away to the Syndicate orchestra, bride and groom made their exit in a restored 1965 Cadillac convertible. n March 12, 2010, the evening began with dinner at McAlister’s Deli in Auburn, Alabama followed by TV and board games. In particular, Zach was interested in playing Yahtzee. Not too long into the game, Sarah made the connection that eating at McAlister’s and playing Yahtzee was very similar to their first date 3 years ago. Sarah was very determined to win and near the end of game, it was Zach’s turn to roll the dice. Without Sarah knowing, he slipped the ring in the cup with the dice and rolled them out onto the table yelling “YAHTZEE!” Needless to say, Sarah was shocked and immediately started to cry. Zach got down on one knee, read Sarah a poem, and asked her to marry him! Wedding Photography by Aaron Pierce
