he past is not only where we come from, but it is our heritage and our future. In this issue we take a glance back in time not only in our own lives but the influence it has on the present. Our reflections begin with “In Her Words.” These brides have shared the coveted wedding gown with their mother, daughter or sister and also the significance of that memorable day. Vintage trends of the late 19th and 20th centuries are the inceptions of the modern day weddings. In our fashion pages we demonstrate how a half century of gown designs have made an imprint on the styles of today. Step back in time starting in the early 1900’s of the Victorian Era and the ‘white’ wedding gown was introduced by royalty ending in the 1950’s when our own Grace Kelly became the Princess of Monaco. In present day we “rock” with trendy bridesmaid and tuxedo fashion that is infused with simplistic and traditional details. Discover how your local cake & floral designers have taken the classic design consistencies of lace, ruffles, bows, pearls and the wedding signature of a monogram to create picture perfect ensembles for the fashion forward brides of today. In this issue celebrity contributors and professionals, offer insights to assist every bride with musical, etiquette, design styles and new trends from the past, present and future. “Real Brides” share their “Real Wedding” stories and ideas with the common thread of family, and the influence of past traditions or, new customs created from those influences. To share your story, go to southernbride.com. Or, to guarantee your spot, you can recount your story with family and friends by purchasing a one or two-page Wedding Announcement to be featured in our Wedding Album.

My piece of advice: Family traditions and your past are the vein of your existence. Respect it, and hold it close to your heart. ~ Lynn Walker, Editor ~

T

By Stephani Bloomquist

h e First Encounter: Clare Burson and Jordan Dressler worked together while Clare was a freshman and Jordan was a sophomore in college. Clare liked Jordan at the time, but he had a girlfriend. “I had a crush on him. I just thought he was the coolest thing since sliced bread,” Clare said.

A few years later, Clare moved to New York, and in 2005 during Yom Kippur, she was attending a service at a synagogue and bumped into Jordan. Still, nothing evolved from the encounter. Two years later Clare came across Jordan’s profile on Facebook. After adding him as a friend, she received a message from him asking if she would like to go out for a drink to catch up. He claimed to be following Clare’s music career, however, she later found out, he actually hadn’t been following her music career, but it was a great topic for discussion over a drink. This encounter started their journey together. In Preparation: Clare and Jordan chose Memphis as the location for their wedding since most of Clare’s family lived in Memphis. It was important for Clare to have the wedding near her family, especially her grandparents. “Since I am planning on spending my life up north, it was important for me to honor the place where I grew up,” she said. When Jordan’s family came in for the wedding, the Bursons showed them what true “Southern Hospitality” was all about. “To bring a bunch of Yankees down to Tennessee was fun and we treated them to Memphis barbecue, southern fried chicken and other Southern specialties,” Clare said. To honor Clare’s deceased maternal grandfather, a poet, Clare and Jordan thought it would be nice to use the same font on his typewriter for their invitations. With this inspiration, family and friends gave them several antique typewriters to use for guests to type messages for their guestbook. Clare hired Amy Miller of Amy Miller Weddings and Events as their wedding planner; they thought this would be helpful since she and her parents no longer live in Memphis. “We still have connections in Memphis, so together we put together a pretty cool event,” Clare said.

The Big Day: Clare and Jordan incorporated many of the Jewish traditions into their big day. In Jewish tradition, the couple signs the marriage contract, called the Ketubah prior to the ceremony. For this event, Clare wore her great grandmother’s wedding dress and jewelry that had belonged to her grandmother. “The Ketubah signing ceremony was very emotional for me, since my grandmother had passed away a few months before and I was wearing her mother’s, my great grandmother’s, dress at the ceremony,” said Clare. Family and traditions played an integral part in all aspects of the day. The couple’s Chuppah, or canopy in the ceremony, was constructed of prayer shawls, from Jordan and Clare’s family. “With the exception of the wedding cake, almost all of the desserts were based on my mother’s recipes and for the out-of-town guest bags, we made about 100 mini-pound cakes based on my maternal grandmother’s pound cake recipe,” Clare stated. Clare is a singer/songwriter and some friends she met in Nashville have an old time string band. The band played during the reception and the recessional, including a song that both Clare and Jordan had learned in an old time string band class in college. The Retreat: Clare and Jordan took a 12-day honeymoon, traveling first to the island of Koh Samui. Clare said, “ this was the most relaxing and beautiful part of our trip.” Then, they made their way to Siem Reap, Cambodia, which was a highlight for both she and Jordan, “The temples were amazing,” Clare said. “It was a powerful experience just to witness what the country is like today, and see the amazing architecture and historical ruins still there.” Finally, they visited Bangkok, Thailand, where they spent six hours in the Chatuchak market, one of the largest and most famous markets in the world.

vintage for the Modern Day Wedding One of the hottest trends in today’s modern weddings is all about looking to the past – into everything vintage and antique. Couples today are choosing to infuse their wedding with everything old while making it feel new again. The trend goes much farther than renting a vintage car for the wedding day. It’s in the way the party looks, the bride & groom’s chosen attire and the way the event is documented.

Brides love all things vintage including birdcage veils which drape just over the forehead to the lash line and are adorned with feathers, beads and buttons. These trendsetting brides accent their gowns with shrugs made from lace used in their grandmother’s wedding gowns and choose little details like cocktail rings or vintage chandelier earrings that appear plucked from a local antique jewelry store. Grooms are also embracing the trend of vintage in their attire by wearing suits instead of rented tuxedos. Often the suits are made by tailors and are in tones of brown, tan or grey instead of traditional black which makes it feel more bespoke and handmade. The bouquets that are chosen also have a vintage and ruffled feeling to them by using peonies, ranunculus and English garden roses, or calla lilies and hydrangea accented with more modern twists of crystal beading, lace stem wraps and luxurious feathers. These little twists take the bouquets from the ordinary to the extraordinary and make it more memorable and meaningful. The ceremonies and receptions that have vintage inspired elements are a lot of fun to put together. Scouring the internet for vintage cameras, books, chalkboards, typewriters, crystals and old buttons can be time consuming but will also pay off at the wedding by having something very unique that your guests have not experienced before. Look for mismatched containers and props that have a bit of wear on them – they are more authentic that way. Rent damask linens and wrap your napkins in vintage ribbon accented with crystal pins – all mismatched, of course - found at an online auction or local used clothing store. Color is also a wonderful way to convey a vintage themed wedding. For example, try using tea stained lace overlays on lilac toned linen and soft tones of peach and crème flowers. Mixing and matching the linen colors can also be an effective way of showcasing your theme. Using tones of pinks to blush and crème along with flowers that appear picked from the garden in tones of crème, green and plum in silver revere bowls of different sizes is another way showcase vintage color palettes. Adding silver or gold candlesticks with tall tapers interspersed gives the table an old world appearance.

Sasha Souza: Magnificent Weddings by Design (Beaufort Books) is a stunning, hard cover wedding design book featuring beautiful photography of all aspects of wedding design including never before seen Sasha Souza Events real weddings. A culmination of her many years as a top wedding designer, Signature Sasha: Magnificent Weddings by Design provides brides, event planners and florists with unique wedding design inspiration and is the first book of its kind to offer details on event design ranging from color couture, to floral, to creating inspiration boards, and much more.

professionally speaking Flower Preservation

By Julie Skinner

one petal at a time

Preserving Your Memories,

These stay by your side during the entire day: while taking pictures, getting dressed and when you walk down the aisle. They are one of the main components of your attire, and speak volumes about your style. They add beauty and color to your back-drop of white. Your bouquet is that special accessory, and one that you don’t want to let slip away and wither over time. Elizabeth Jones has always been artistic. She received her degree from Memphis College of Art in Interior Design, but has always had one special hobby that she’s practiced for years: air drying and pressing flowers.

“It’s fascinating when you learn the science behind it,” Elizabeth says. The process of freeze drying is intricate, and leaves the bride’s flowers as though they were just picked up from the florist. Elizabeth had a special freeze dryer with two chambers that work together. The flowers are placed in the top chamber and frozen to negative 20 degrees. Through sublimation, the water is removed from the flowers as water vapor, which goes into the bottom chamber, set at negative 50 degrees, where it is formed into ice. Gradually, the flowers are warmed up to 70 degrees over a period of about three weeks. The bouquet is then ready to be framed and flaunted for years to come. The bride’s bouquet will be picked up at the reception the day of the wedding, so that they can immediately begin the freezing process. For the best results preservation should begin no later than three days after the wedding. “By the end of the reception, the flowers are already bruised because they have been handled a lot throughout the day,” Elizabeth says. “The quicker I can get them and re-hydrate them, the better.” Elizabeth carefully disassembles the bouquet before freeze drying the flowers, and takes many pictures so that she can remember exactly how they were the day of the wedding when it is time to reconstruct. Elizabeth only uses acid-free mat boards, UV-rated acrylic on the frames and adhesives from a museum supply company, to enhance the life of the preserved item and not damage it. When brides pick up their finished product “I usually get tears and they say, ‘I had no idea it was going to look this good,’” Elizabeth says. A Flower for Your Thoughts offers a variety of colors and styles of frames, shadow boxes and ornaments for the bride to select. Prices range from $20 to $590 based on the bride’s selection. It can be a single flower, the entire bouquet, a shoe from the day of the wedding, an invitation, photographs, the groom’s boutonniere or a keepsake garter. Elizabeth designed her business so there are options for everyone. “You never know what the future holds,” Elizabeth says. “This is a keepsake from one of the most important events in a couple’s life. Preserving those memories for yourself and future generations is priceless. "

Q a notable occasion &A professionally speaking Entertainment

By Julie Skinner

For today’s eclectic bride, anything goes! Modern brides are leaning towards out-of-the-box music to set the mood for their big day. Other brides, however, are finding ways to put a spin on the classics. Let these four seasoned musicians help you decide what musical genre is perfect for your wedding, or maybe you will decide on a creative combination of old and new!

How have traditional customs in entrance and ceremony music influenced some of today’s newer trends?

The music for the ceremony should be respectful of the place in which it is held whether it is in a church, synagogue or temple. Then, it should reflect the personality of the couple. Recently, one couple married in an old, downtown refurbished bank building often used for weddings and receptions. The ceremony was fairly traditional, but since the groom was a rock musician, they recessed down the aisle to a song by Nine Inch Nails. That set the tone for the rockin’ reception to follow. Another couple married in a small Baptist church in east Tennessee on a snowy, December evening. They loved Blue Grass music, therefore, ceremony music was provided by Blue Grass musicians. The alter was draped with a quilt made by the bride, real candles lit the fir trees surrounding the quilt, and the bride seemed to float down the isle to “Amazing Grace” played by a lone country fiddle. There wasn’t a dry eye in the church. Blue Grass music was also the hit of the barn dance reception that followed. Follow the rule of making the music at your wedding beautiful, respectful of the venue and definitely you. After all, it’s your day - make it fun and memorable! Martha Phelps Seraphim Sounds 901.487.8055/901.756.1399

What are some ways to spice up traditional How should a bride decide if they want to

ceremony music at weddings?

It depends on if it is a solo performance or if it involves other people. A musician can do different things with the piece like: play in different keys, change to different octaves, elaborate and incorporate variations. If two or more musicians are playing, take turns with the melody, and add or change anything to the piece as long as the melody is carried. Bill Butner Bill Butner, Harpist 901.383.9356 harpobill@mindspring.com

What are some ways to combine both

traditional and non-traditional music during the entrance and ceremony of a wedding? As a jazz/swing band, we do not play traditional or classical wedding music, such as the Wedding March, etc. However, we have been asked to perform for ceremony entrances and exit music from time to time. Many of the songs in our repertoire are perfect for the non-traditional bride who would want something a little bit different. We have performed some of our jazz standards, such as “Unforgettable,” “It Had to Be You” or other popular standards such as “In My Life” by the Beatles, in our style, providing a new twist using modern classics. For a more upbeat entrance, we could play something like “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” as the wedding party swing dances down the aisle. Talk about a YouTube clip! That would certainly be different! go the traditional or non-traditional route with their music?

The first question a bride must ask herself is: Have I always dreamed of “Here Comes The Bride,” or do I want something that reflects my individual personality? More and more brides are choosing to go outside of the box and select music that is special to them in one way or another. The list is endless, and anything from movie themes to Pop/Rock is acceptable. On the other hand, traditional wedding music is timeless and creates a classic atmosphere. Whether you choose traditional, non-traditional or a combination, the music will set a soundtrack for your wedding day that you will look back on for many years to come! A Wedding Tribute

T

By Sarah Christine Bolton

h e First Encounter: Cristin’s friend, Ashley’s, boyfriend had been trying to set her up on a date with his friend Cameron, but the timing just never worked out. Then, that summer Ashley decided to move in with Cristin and Cameron showed up to help with the heavy lifting. “Cameron ended up helping Jeremy, Ashley’s boyfriend (now husband), move her stuff,” Cristin says. “I fixed a meal for us: hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, and fruit pizza. My mom always told me the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach!” Cristin’s culinary skills must have made an impression, because she and Cameron made plans to go out that weekend. “He took me to see the movie ‘Knocked Up,’ which I don’t recommend as a first-date film!” Cristin says. They went out to dinner afterwards, and have been together ever since. In Preparation: Cristin & Cameron lived in Raleigh, NC, so planning the wedding long-distance was stressful. “We enlisted the services of an event planner, Social Butterflies, to help us and they made it so easy,” Cristin says. Over the next few months, Cristin met with Social Butterflies every time she came to Memphis. “We basically had the wedding planned by October,” she says. “I am very decisive, so once I make a decision it is done and I don’t look back.” Cristin grew up attending services at Germantown United Methodist Church, so it was her decision was easy for the ceremony location. “The church is a big reason why I wanted to get married in Memphis and not Raleigh, NC,” she says. The couple decided on the Peabody Hotel for their reception site, since it was a large enough venue to accommodate their 600 guests. Cristin chose her favorite color, coral, for the main color of the wedding, and added highlights of green, purple, pink, and yellow. “I love color, so I wanted something really happy,” Cristin says.

Ever since she was a little girl, Cristin dreamed of having a Vera Wang wedding dress. So, she went to a gown boutique in Cary, N.C. with her mom, grandmother, and mother-in-law to search for the perfect gown. “The dress that I ended up getting was the last dress I tried on,” Cristin says. “I was in tears when it was half way up. I knew it was the one.” The Big Day: The traditional, formal ceremony was presided over by Rev. Kirchoff of Germantown United Methodist. “While we were planning the wedding, my father, who passed away recently, had one request,” Cristin says. “He wanted to have the song, ‘The Prayer’, sung during the ceremony. He loved the version by Andre Bocelli and Celine Dion. I’m so happy I did that for him.” Three weeks before the wedding, Cristin also lost her grandmother. “As a tribute, I wrote her a letter in my program,” Cristin says. “I am so happy I did that as well.” At the reception, Memphis Soul Revue provided the entertainment, while guests enjoyed a buffet with unique food stations of a Mexican bar, Asian bar, and a junk food bar. “The junk food bar was a big hit,” Cristin says. “We had mini corn dogs, a mashed potato bar, and mini hamburgers. While, at the other bar, we served signature drinks with caricatures of ourselves displaying the names of the drinks,” Cristin says. “It was so cute.” The wedding and reception went smoothly, with just one humorous hitch. “The band got our intro music wrong,” Cristin says. “I had worked really hard to get it just right. I had the biggest frown on my face during our first dance. Now, when we see the frown in the pictures we just laugh.” The Retreat: The couple had originally planned to honeymoon in St. Lucia, but with the unexpected passing of her grandmother, Cristin was worried about going too far away. They decided to cancel their St. Lucia honeymoon, but received a full refund, thanks to trip insurance. “It was the best $300 we spent on the wedding,” Cristin says. “We decided to go to Marco Island, FL, and spend a week on the beach, drinking Mojitos and relaxing.

 The epitome of a 1940's Hollywood starlet,

this wavy style for long hair, is classic glamour.

otel Magnolia, located in the heart of downtown Foley, Alabama, was built in 1908 by John Burton Foley, founder of the city of Foley. It is presently owned by Mrs. Marjorie Snook who, as a young girl dreamed of rocking on the front porch. Mrs. Snook’s late husband, John, bought the hotel after World War II and refurbished it. The glass in the front door of the Hotel came from John Snook’s grandfather’s home in Ohio. Five U.S. Presidents have passed through these doors. Following a thorough renovation, Hotel Magnolia is now a modern inn, offering the charm and sophistication of a by-gone era with the luxuries, comforts and amenities of today. Come visit the innkeeper, Mary Younce, and the friendly staff at The Hotel Magnolia to experience true “Southern Hospitality.” www.TheHotelMagnolia.com / 251.943.5297 Photography by Indesign Creative Michael Allen & Brian K Crain . weddingindesign.com

By Sarah Christine Bolton

h e First Encounter: When Amanda Joy and Justin met at a mutual friend’s wedding, they already knew about each other. “Our friend had been telling us for a long time that we would make a perfect match, but neither of us were big on blind dates,” Amanda Joy says. They spent some time talking during the reception, but at the end of the night, they parted ways. A month later, the couple met again at a party and spent hours talking. Before they said goodnight, Amanda Joy invited Justin to her 26th birthday the next weekend. “He showed up, he was the last to leave, and he asked me for a date at the end of the night,” she says. “The rest is history! What a great birthday gift!” In Preparation: Amanda Joy says she had never been that little girl who had her wedding all planned out in her mind, but as soon as Justin slipped the beautiful ring on her finger, her imagination took flight. With the help of her mother and wedding planner Mona Dunlap, planning the wedding turned out to be an exciting and memorable experience. Amanda Joy wanted a classic, formal, elegant wedding. The couple chose Second Presbyterian Church for the ceremony location and all white flowers for the décor, to represent the purity of their relationship. The Big Day: The beautiful, majestic church was decorated simply with white flowers and a large arch at the altar. “The florists at the Garden District did not disappoint,” Amanda Joy says. “It literally took my breath away when I arrived at the church and saw it for the first time.” “One of the many highlights of the ceremony was the special Trumpet Fanfare written especially for me to walk down the aisle, by composer John Mason Hodges,” Amanda Joy says. “The mixture of trumpets and tympanis was absolutely glorious.” The couple wanted a very religious ceremony, and did special things to include their family members.

“During the ceremony our mothers and fathers were all asked to stand and take a vow to accept and love each of us as their own son and daughter,” Amanda Joy says. “It was something I had never seen done at a wedding before and our minister asked beforehand if he could incorporate this into our ceremony. It was such a beautiful and meaningful addition to the ceremony.” At the reception the bride and the groom entered the ballroom to one of the couple’s favorite song’s “Pretty Woman” and danced their first dance to Stevie Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.” “Our first concert together was Stevie Wonder, and Justin always tells me I’m his sunshine,” Amanda Joy says. Guests enjoyed smoked salmon, fresh gulf shrimp served in an ice sculpture, beef tenderloin, tomato and basil skewers, fresh marinated vegetables and various gourmet cheeses and fruits. Pumpkin gazpacho shooters were passed to celebrate the fall season and at 10 p.m., guests snacked on mini catfish po-boys and sliders. As party favors, guests took home caramel apples from Dinstuhl’s Fine Candy. “We really felt the candy apple captured the essence of October and fall,” Amanda Joy says. The Retreat: The bride and groom honeymooned at the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, California. Justin planned the entire week of events, and would give Amanda Joy an envelope each morning with clues about what they were going to be doing that day. “Highlights of his surprises included a limo vineyard/wine tasting tour of the Temecula Wine Valley, a spa day and couples massage at our hotel, a trip to Escondido, Fashion Valley, and a day at the fabulous San Diego Zoo,” Amanda Joy says. “What can I say? My husband is pretty amazing!”

celebrity contributors Dave Ramsey By Dave Ramsey

“I DO” need

insurance

In the first year of marriage I advise couples to stick to the basics. Together they should get on a budget, pay down debts, save money and get insured. We all hate insurance until we need it. It’s not glamorous, but insurance is a must!

Health Insurance

Long Term Disability Insurance

Medical bills are one of the biggest causes of bankruptcy. Not having health insurance is not an option. Many of us don’t like to think about all the ins and outs of insurance, but for a young family just starting out there are affordable plans. A health savings account (HSA) is an excellent alternative to the usual, expensive health insurance plan. Most young married couples have no kids and rarely go to the doctor. HSA can save you hundreds of dollars a month but still provide quality health care coverage. An HSA allows also you to save for medical expenses in a taxfree savings account. Look for large deductibles in order to lower your monthly premiums.

Life Insurance

If you are thirty-two years old, you are twelve times more likely to become disabled than to die by age sixty-five. The best place to buy disability insurance is through your work at a fraction of the cost. You can usually get coverage that equals from 50 to 70 percent of your income.

Homeowners Insurance The Legacy Drawer This is one of the best things my wife Sharon and I have done for each other. The Legacy Drawer is a file drawer in our study that has everything one of us would need if something happened to the other one. It has letters of instruction on everything in there: a full will, a full estate plan, all of our investments, copies of insurance information, etc. Many of us think the worst couldn’t happen to us until it does. Insurance is a reality. It’s also a responsible way to manage your money. The key to becoming wealthy is to get out of debt and stay out of debt. By getting quality insurance, you are protecting yourself from a lifetime of money problems.

The best and most affordable type of life insurance to buy is term life. The idea is that while you are building a family and wealth together, you need a cushion should the unthinkable happen. Then, when you are 57 years old and the kids are grown and gone, the house is paid for, and you have $700,000 in mutual funds, you’ll become self-insured. That means when your 20-year term is up, you shouldn’t need life insurance at all – because with no kids to feed, no house payment and $700,000, your spouse would be able to manage if you die without insurance.

Dave Ramsey: The Total Money Makeover

Dave Ramsey’s New York Times best-seller, The Total Money Makeover, has changed the way millions of Americans handle their finances. Helps readers discover the truth about their finances with specific how-to steps for transforming your financial life and reaching your highest financial potential.

Whether you rent or own a home, you need homeowners insurance. This will protect the contents of your home. There are two things to remember when shopping for this kind of insurance. First, get a policy that has a high deductible. Second, get a policy that has guaranteed replacement costs. If something happens to your home and you have a policy without guaranteed replacement costs, you will only be covered for the value of your home at the time you took out the policy. That’s bad news because most homes increase in value.

h e First Encounter: Beau and Courtney met through mutual friends while attending the University of Memphis. Looking for a break from studying for her master’s degree, Courtney decided to go to trivia night at a local restaurant. “Of course, we ended up sitting next to each other at a big table, and it all started from there,” Courtney says. “I couldn’t remember the last time I had such easy conversation with another person or when I had laughed so hard and so much my mouth and stomach hurt!” The couple started talking everyday and were soon inseparable. “Family and tradition are very important to us,” Courtney says. “We were both amazed at how easy it was to be together. Some relationships take a lot of work, but ours seemed to develop so naturally.” In Preparation: Beau proposed during a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Courtney knew exactly where she wanted to get married. “I knew it had to be the beautiful, historic Collierville United Methodist Church on the square,” she says. “Beau also wanted to get married in a church, so it was a perfect spot for us. Small and intimate but full of beautiful rich colors. Most importantly, we could feel the presence of God there.” Collierville holds rich family history for Courtney. She grew up there, and spent her childhood hearing stories about her grandfather’s gas station on the Square and her father’s restoration of the famous red caboose. “Our family’s history is very important and carrying on the tradition of making memories was integral in our planning process,” Courtney says. “What better way to start our own family and life together, than by honoring our family’s traditions, memories and their importance in our lives?” Courtney didn’t have a wedding planner, but she stayed organized by maintaining a big binder. “I took it everywhere with me!” she says. “If I had to make a decision I had all my ideas, colors and dates at my fingertips.”

The Big Day: The couple’s wedding day was a beautiful January day, sunny with temperatures in the sixties. “It was such a blessing, because it was in the middle of the winter,” Courtney says. The couple posed for photos outside before the ceremony, near the red caboose and an old telephone booth in the Collierville town square. “I’ll never forget the look on Beau’s face,” Courtney says. “I think when he saw me for the first time, it was a highlight for him as well.” Inside the church, the bright winter sunshine streamed in through the beautiful stained glass windows of the church. Deep red roses brought color to the space, and several violins provided the ceremony music. “I was so happy my father got to walk his only daughter down the aisle,” Courtney says. Courtney and her mother, aunt, and bridesmaids decorated the reception site, Club Windward, the day before. Candlelight danced off the crystal accents, and warm red and chocolate colors provided a rich contrast. The beautiful wedding cake, provided by Kake Divas, was garnished with crystals and rich red roses. “It was intimate and perfect for our small crowd of family and close friends,” Courtney says. “We had delicious food and cake and then danced the night away. It was a wonderful way to end a wonderful day.” The Retreat: The couple honeymooned in the very spot where they became engaged: Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

& Jason Dunn

The Stars Were Aligned By Mckenzi & Jason Dunn

T

e First Encounter: We first met at Illinois College in h Jacksonville, IL, in the dining hall at lunch one day in March 2006. From there, we kept running into each other! We both spent the summer in Jacksonville, which led to more date nights before my graduation in May 2007. With my immediate move to Memphis, TN for optometry school at Southern College of Optometry, we spent the next two years in a long distance relationship. On July 6, 2008, with the stars aligned in the sky, it was a perfect summer night on a beach in Destin, FL. I asked Mckenzi to join me on the beach to share a bottle of wine for my birthday. I had packed a backpack with a blanket, wine, candles, and of course, the ring. I handed Mckenzi a prepared bottle with my proposal rolled up inside and asked her to read it aloud. Noting all the reasons why I loved her in the form of a letter, the last line was written in the smallest of print, “Mckenzi Lenae Davidson, will you marry me?” She took a second to catch her breath before she excitedly said, “Yes!!!”

“Make it yours, share it with those you love and all of your dreams for the day will come true!” - Mckenzi Davidson

Photography by Dara Caudill of Island Photography, islandphotography.org

In Preparation: We knew we wanted to have a small, intimate beach wedding to celebrate with our families - our own private paradise! On vacation we frequented The Beachhouse on Anna Maria Island, FL, we knew it would be the perfect place for our special day. Shawn, the on-site event coordinator, was wonderful. We referred to her as our personal wedding planner. From day one, my mom shared in our excitement and was instrumental with the creativity and planning. The personal influences and attention to detail made our wedding an intimate experience in a very romantic setting! The Big Day: “Highlights of the Ceremony & Reception” After a week of hurricane winds and storms, we finally had a day of overcast skies with only a chance of evening storms. Because we knew the staff at The Beachhouse was prepared and ready for our day, Jason and I were able to enjoy a relaxing day on the beach before our 5:00 p.m. ceremony! Shortly before the ceremony started, the skies opened up with

the sun shining brightly amidst the clouds. Our dream of having a breathtaking wedding was becoming a reality. Escaping turbulent weather we opted for an untraditional procession incorporating our most meaningful songs. With the ocean in the background as I walked toward Jason, my heart felt as though it skipped a couple of beats. Our amazing photographer, captured Jason wiping a tear from his cheek. The Retreat: “Highlights on the Honeymoon” With Jason still in school and with only time off for the Memorial Day weekend, we had to postpone our honeymoon until after his graduation in 2011.

“New York!” “Concrete jungle where dreams are made of - there’s nothing you can’t do - Now you’re in New York!” It was shortly after my trip to New York City that I first heard the song. “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys, and now I can’t get it or New York City out of my mind. It was a beautiful day in November when we arrived at La Guardia, and I had made arrangements for a “Town Car” to take us to the hotel and I highly recommend it. There are many websites to help with information about where to stay, where to go, what to eat, Broadway shows and special events, I highly recommend starting at nycgo.com. I also recommend purchasing a CityPass, this is a great way to get the lay of the land which includes a double decker bus tour with very informative and interesting guides to help you plan your itinerary. When selecting a place to stay in the city you need to make a list of your wants and needs. The selection of hotels is so diverse, it will not be a problem finding the right location to accommodate your needs. Your friends, your family and co-workers will all have favorites to 126

Here are three distinctly different exceptaional locations I would like to share:

For those that have come for Broadway and the city night life, I would recommend moving a little closer to downtown to the Carlton Hotel in midtown Manhattan at 88 Madison Avenue. Originally opened in 1904 as the Hotel Seville, the Carlton Hotel recently underwent a multimillion dollar transformation, enhancing the rich historic nature while integrating luxury services and amenities, including complimentary high speed and wireless internet access, complimentary fitness center, 42” flat screen LCD Televisions, iPod docking station and radio, as well as being 100% non-smoking and pet friendly (25lb limit). The Carlton Hotel offer special packages to accommodate your special desires from shopping to romance or check-in to one of their 625 square foot Empire Suites, including one bedroom with two full size beds and a separate parlor, and best of all, a view of the Empire State Building. Go to CarltonHotelNY.com for more information about what the Carlton Hotel has to offer.

If you would like to have the ability to go down to the corner market and pick up some fresh produce or bakery goods and sit out on the balcony for a romantic dinner or breakfast, I recommend that you check out the Marmara Manhattan Luxury Hotel & Residence with condo style accommodations including a full kitchen, living area and one or two bedrooms and baths. The Marmara Manhattan is located in the Upper East Side at 301 east 94th at 3rd. The neighborhood is truly that, with a plethora of corner flower markets, bakeries, eateries and fresh produce stands. You are also within walking distance to Central Park, the Guggenheim Museum, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, yet only a bus or subway ride away from those big city lights. This is also a perfect location to accommodate families if you happen to be in town for a wedding or special

The staff is always friendly and eager to accommodate your every need. All rooms are elegantly appointed in European luxury with all the amenities needed to stay in touch with your busy life and more. A complimentary membership to all nine New York Health and Racquet Clubs is available to use during your stay, just in case you didn’t walk enough while you were out sightseeing. The spacious yet cozy, luxury one-bedroom suites, offer the all comforts of home including a living area with wet-bar, marble-tiled bathrooms and balconies for viewing the New York City lights, that will inspire you. Go to KimberlyHotel.com and start planning your next Romantic Getaway. I believe it had been 15 years since the last time I was in New York City and now I plan on returning every year to re-energize and bring back that “Empire State of Mind.”

honeymooning

lowcountry style the grand strand

By Lynne Leonard Marriott at Grande Dunes

Market Commons

The Marina Inn

South Carolina’s Grand Strand graciously stretches for sixty sandy miles from the North Carolina border to the historic seaside retreat of Pawleys Island. Visions of sandcastles surrounded by colorful beach umbrellas shading tanned bikini clad tourist would be a typical Myrtle Beach postcard. A new Grand Strand identity is warranted by the construction of luxury resorts offering top shelf amenities appreciated by discriminating travelers. Grand Strand dining, shopping, entertainment and golfing may have trumped the beautiful beaches reeling in year-round visitors. Once viewed as a summer only getaway, the Grand Strand has evolved into a popular sophisticated four season destination. The Marina Inn and Marriott at Grande Dunes provide access to world class golfing, boating, spa facilities, fine dining and entertainment. The resorts are located near the Historic Pine Lakes Country Club and Calvin Gilmore’s famous Carolina Opry. Go online to take virtual tours of these extraordinary properties. Stylish weddings and honeymoons attract international Grande Dunes visitors each year. For a casual retreat, choose The Island Vista located in one of Myrtle Beach’s most affluent neighborhoods. This centrally located property provides guests with spacious suites, a deluxe pool area, and popular dining options. Myrtle Beach has been known as a shopper’s paradise. The recently constructed Market Commons located near the Myrtle Beach Airport is the newest shopping attraction. Indulge yourself with the upscale shops located in this

urban village community. Go tropical and dine at Tommy Bahamas’s Restaurant. Stroll the streets, catch a movie or enjoy a coffee at the Starbucks located in the Barnes and Noble Book Store. While shopping at the Pawleys Island Hammock Shops, include dining at the casual, yet sophisticated High Hammock Restaurant. The best of the Lowcountry is discovered by heading south to Murrell’s inlet, Litchfield Beach and Pawley’s Island. Visit Brookgreen Gardens to admire a priceless sculpture collection. The art is dramatically showcased by Mother Nature. Stop in Murrell’s Inlet, the seafood capital of South Carolina, to dine in one of the eclectic marsh view restaurants or catch a fishing charter to bring in your own catch of the day. Across the street from Brookgreen Gardens is the Huntington Beach State Park where you can bicycle or segway around the park’s salt marshes, photograph birds, turtles, crabs and alligators thriving in their natural habitat. To admire the Grand Strand’s most beautiful beaches, take a drive on Pawleys Island. Stop at the Sea View Inn, to request a reservation for a spectacular homemade Lowcountry breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Sea View has been hosting guests since 1937. Listen for the dinner bell while you enjoy a bottle of brought in wine, casually sipped as you rock in a white weathered rocking chair on the oceanfront porch. Before leaving the island, catch a sunset on the marsh side of Pawleys. Savor the painted horizon, inhale the air flowing across the salty sea marsh and soulfully appreciate the power of seaside solitude. From the north to the south, ambience prevails here, making the Grand Strand a popular destination to create memories that will keep you coming back for more. lizabeth and Trent met through mutual friends, one being Trent’s brother, Justin. They went on a date and the rest is history! Trent proposed at his house that they had both been remodeling. He gave her a silver engraved box with a key to the house. He then gave her a picture frame with three photo openings. The first one had the lyrics to “Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts, the second space had a letter he had written to her, and the last space was titled “A Wife of Noble Character” with excerpts from Proverbs 31. He got down on one knee and proposed! Trent had a camera hidden in the corner of the room and recorded the whole thing. Ten minutes later, their families showed up at the house and they spent the rest of the night celebrating! They had a morning wedding ceremony at the Botanic Gardens with 200 friends and family on May 23, 2009. Elizabeth is the only girl in a family of six children, so everyone really wanted her wedding to be special.

The traditional Christian Service took place at Somerville First United Methodist Church, where the couple attends. Stephanie wore an A-line gown that elegantly glistened in ivory lace and glamorous beads and Jeff wore a traditional black tuxedo with ivory vest and tie. Bridesmaids and groomsmen wore formal black attire while flower girl and ring bearer were dressed to match the bride and groom. The wedding took place following the biggest snow and ice storm to hit in 2010. The snow and ice provided a very unique and picturesque backdrop for the wedding. The historic Woodland Hills hosted the reception as MEPAC prepared an amazing display of “around the world cuisine and coordinated the event decorated in black linens, fuchsia accents, unique orchid centerpieces and custom lighting. Music was provided by local musician and good friend, Eddie Smith. The couple honeymooned in Antigua.
