DEAN’S MESSAGE
I am absolutely in awe of what our faculty, staff, and students have created and achieved over the past 18 months. Their talent and creativity are simply overwhelming. The pieces in this year’s SMFA Art Sale represent the full range of emotions we have all been feeling. There are artworks that ask us to examine our thoughts and beliefs, that challenge us as individuals and as a society. The pieces also represent the beautiful moments in life, in our world, and in humanity. Once again, we are using an online platform to present to you an exciting, highly curated array of artworks. Like you, we are still looking forward to the day that we celebrate together in person, but we have done everything we can to bring you an enjoyable online Art Sale experience and very much hope that you will join us online. Don’t forget that proceeds from the sale go toward making sure that no student who belongs at SMFA will be turned away because they can’t afford to join us. Every penny we raise will ensure that we can continue to meet the full demonstrated financial aid need of all of our students. I hope that you enjoy the online experience and find something you love. Thank you for supporting SMFA and our wonderful students. Sincerely,
Nancy Bauer Dean School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University
OVERVIEW
The SMFA Art Sale celebrates the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University’s vibrant community of artists from across the globe. Your purchase directly supports SMFA’s vision to lead the way in preparing artists who start conversations that matter. Proceeds support the sale’s contributing artists and help SMFA meet our commitment to support 100 percent of our students’ demonstrated financial aid need. The COVID-19 crisis has dramatically increased the hardship of students and working artists alike, so your support is more important than ever! With over 300 participating artists, this virtual sale features exciting new work from well-recognized names such as Dinorá Justice, Marla McLeod, Hannah Barrett, and Andrew Fish, as well as the work of many first-time participants, including Grace DeGennaro and Wilhelm Neusser. Cover Image: Mark Younkle, Please Provide Contact Information, collage, 9.25 x 9.75, framed, $3,850 (see page 28).
The collection was juried by Katie Block of Kblockart, Atsu Gunther of Atsu Gunther Design, Hadley Powell of Powell Fine Art Advisory, and Craig Tevolitz of Platemark Design.

The spirit of community at SMFA is taking on new life again as students have returned to campus for in-person learning. Our faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends continue to join together amidst the pandemic in caring for students’ needs, from providing for physical and mental well-being, to meeting unanticipated financial hardship. Your philanthropy allows us to continue responding as new challenges arise. Faculty and staff are working to ensure students receive the education and mentorship that are at the core of our mission. Your support makes this possible.

recently the SMFA Traveling Fellowship, which brought her to France and Italy to study Orientalist paintings and to conduct research on the intersection of art history and ecofeminism. “My paintings combine the traditional technique of handmarbling with acrylic paint directly on the canvas surface with direct painting with oils. The process is very laborious and time-consuming, but the results are stunning. The intricate patterns of marbling would be nearly impossible to create by other methods. I am very interested in combining old techniques with different approaches, bringing them to the present.”

“My recent artwork evolves from photographs I have taken while exploring wooded areas in Boston, MA, and Chapel Hill, NC. I transform and reverse the photos to inspire scratchboard drawings. In these works, I improvise mandala-like images that seek to connect the fractal structures found in everyday life with structures found in representations of the universe and Baroque figurative painting.”

As an outgrowth of the SMFA Art Sale’s Exquisite Corpse project in 2020, Evelyn Rydz and Gabriel Sosa continued their collaboration with a series of works on paper. Together, they use the antagonistic nature of fire and water to consider contagion, loss, and the passage of time. The work of each artist consumes but reinforces that of the other, reminding us of the heightened division, uncertainty, and hope that mark these times.

MARK YOUNKLE, STUDIO DIPLOMA 90, 5TH YEAR 91 Please Provide Contact Information, collage, 9.25 x 9.75, framed, $3,850 Mark Younkle has exhibited his work at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as a recipient of SMFA’s Traveling Fellowship. He has also shown his work at other museums in New England, including the Fitchburg Art Museum and the Danforth Art Museum at Framingham State University. His work is in the permanent collection of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in New York City. He has exhibited widely in galleries in the greater Boston area, including the Krakow Witkin Gallery, HallSpace, the Chandler Gallery at Maud Morgan Arts, and the Mills Gallery
at Boston Center for the Arts. Younkle’s work has recently been included in online exhibitions at the Jason McCoy Gallery and Denise Bibro Fine Art, both in New York City, and at Salem State University. He is the recipient of a grant from the Mass Cultural Council. “I work primarily in mixed media, utilizing elements of collage, drawing, and painting. I am drawn to material nearing obsolescence. I like the aged quality of paper. One can look at my work and see a telltale word here and there, remnants of journals, as well as autobiographical ephemera such as dated travel itineraries and ticket stubs. I reconstruct an identity through my collages.”

JEFFREY HEYNE Bridge with Manganese Blue and Quinacridone Magenta, 1:31pm, archival pigment print face-mounted to plex, 30 x 45, framed, $4,000 Jeffrey Heyne was launched three years after Sputnik, bought his first camera when 8, practices architecture sometimes, and imagines photographic stories all of the time. His subject matter has ranged from Barbie, to Muybridge, to Renaissance paintings, to outer space. His photos can be found at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Boston Public Library, Boston Athenaeum, Marriott, Fidelity Investments, Compaq Computers, and Boston Properties.

Heyne has received awards from CENTER/Santa Fe, Praxis Gallery, Center for Fine Art Photography, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, and the Griffin Museum of Photography. “I find inspiration from the strange and accidental colors that resulted from my failed attempts at processing Ektachrome slide film. The same chemicals that make those colors beautiful can also be harmful, toxic, or worse. My latest Boston waterfront photographs are saturated with similarly unnatural colors—pretty and mood evoking, but also taking on an environmental implication.”
