Public Urged to

Be Safe, Stay Vigilant Second Officer In Charge of the Eleuthera Division of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), Superintendent Frederick Sands, during an interview in late November, highlighted that during the last two months, Eleuthera had seen a significant decrease in crime - in all areas.

However, he had a strong message for the Eleuthera public, with the island approaching the Thanksgiving, Christmas and winter travel seasons, saying, “We expect an influx of both international and domestic travelers to the island. In that vein, we are going to increase patrols, especially within the commercial districts - paying special attention to those areas.

“People will see more police presence on the street. We are going to be vigilant, and we are going to do what it takes to maintain law and order.

“We expect the corporate community to be on the alert also for anything strange that may seem out of place.

“We will try our best to keep the

peace through both the prevention and detection of crime, which is one of our primary mandates.”

Offering several tips for businesses to take note of this season, Superintendent Sands advised, • “Businesses should have lights around their property, especially after dark, now that evenings come early.

• Extra security guards can be hired.

• Surveillance cameras are also very good to have in place.

Make sure they are maintained and are working - as they assist greatly if something happens.

• It is not advised that you keep alot of cash on hand - make frequent deposits.

Get Involved, Now! A Message to Parents With the end of the 2019 Christmas Term at schools looming near, the District Superintendent of Education, Mr. Michael Culmer, had an important message for parents - to see the best from their children’s performance at schools across the island.

The thrust right now, he emphasized, was trying to get the kids altogether with their BJC’s and BGCSE’s.

“We want to encourage parents to make sure that their children are signing up for those national examinations.

We have some students who may be deficient in subjects for the National High School Diploma, so, we encourage parents to be vigilant, and to know where their kids are in the National High School Diploma program - to ensure that they are registering and paying for those BJC’s and BGCSE’s in a timely manner.

“Schools will have to have students registered before schools close on December 13th. Many students are also working with course work, so, parents should know and be mindful of what is required for the course work. Also, with students who will be writing the GLAT examinations, parents should

make sure they are communicating with the schools. Schools are offering after school study programs and extra classes, so, parents are asked to ensure their children are taking advantage of the opportunities that are there. Start now - know what is happening with your children. Know what’s happening at the schools. Get involved,” urged DSE Culmer.

With Christmas term exams scheduled to take place at all public schools from December 9th to December 13th, Mr. Culmer exhorted parents to assist their children with a deliberate study schedule, saying, “Help your child to plan that study time, and encourage them to review. Don’t wait until December to begin studying - they should be studying now and practicing now. Take out those books, and see how many assignments are being done. Communicate with the school and find out where your child’s weaknesses are. So, you can know what needs to be happening at home as reinforcement... It makes

MOT Gears Up for festive season with

the Thanksgiving Crafters and Cultural Festival

As the Christmas season gets into full swing, the Ministry of Tourism (MOT) is gearing up to ring it in with its 1st Annual Thanksgiving Crafters and Cultural Festival on Saturday, November 30th, beginning at 12 noon, on the bayfront in Governor’s Harbour, until 12 midnight. “We are hoping this year that we will be the event that will launch the festive season,” said Jacqueline Gibson, Manager at the Governor’s Harbour Ministry of Tourism office, adding, “It will be a great opportunity for locals and visitors to come together for cultural exchange. The whole idea is to showcase what our local vendors, and local artisans are making, and we want people to start their Christmas shopping this year by shopping locally.”

The cultural exchange, said Ms. Gibson, is going to be epic. Starting with games for the kids - and if the crabs are crawling, they plan to have a crab catching contest, as well as a watermelon eating contest. To showcase some of the expertise on island in the

making of preserves, the renowned Lady Di is expected to be coming from Gregory Town, to offer demonstrations.

“She is a great pineapple farmer, and she also has that cottage industry going, doing really good jams and jellies and pepper sauces. She will be doing that demonstration on the spot. Then of course, if you want to purchase anything, you can do that - or if you just want a little taste of jam, you can do that, with a piece of fresh bread. To wash that down, we will have native teas. We will also have Graceful Lilly Productions, who will be bringing an array of tasty Bahamian bush teas and she will be there to explain what those teas are for. Some will be warm, some will be cold - and she will highlight the medicinal properties - as we want to promote healthy drinking as well as eating. Those coming out will be able to get their lunches and dinners, and perhaps even a midnight snack,” described Ms. Gibson.

Manager Gibson shared, “As you are aware, we were supposed to have our Goombay event on August 30th, but that was postponed as a result of Hurricane Dorian passing. So, as a result, some of the magnificent items of entertainment that we had planned for August will be infused into our Thanksgiving Crafters and Cultural Festival. So, we will have live entertainment, with a fire dancer - Venus.

She is awesome, and very popular.

We will have a special native-themed fashion show by Empress Verda. We will also have Bahamian music star performers like Fanshawn, Corey Hield, and the Blue Waters Band.

People can also look forward to a Junkanoo Rushout, with the Governor’s Harbour Development Association. So, we are looking forward to an event like no other!”

International concern and misinformation about which islands were affected by Hurricane Dorian were still a concern at MOT, highlighted Mrs. Gibson. “Here at the Ministry of Tourism, we still have people calling in asking if the beaches are okay and what’s happening with the island of Eleuthera. This will all take place during the Thanksgiving weekend, and we look forward to showcasing that Eleuthera is open for business!”

The Ministry has a lofty goal shared Mr. Culmer, stating that by 2030 the country aimed to have 85% of students successfully completing

the National High School Diploma program. This meant that they were looking to have continuous improvements each year in order to reach that goal. “It’s going to take a holistic approach. We can’t just say, we will leave it to the school, and the student can’t blame the parent or teacher. We have the best teachers, working in the best schools that we have. So, the teachers also have to realize that parents are sending us the best children - that’s how we have to look at it - and work together.”

DOUBLE STANDARDS IN THE OAS

He is also a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies at the University of London and at Massey College in the University of Toronto. The views expressed are entirely his own) Double standards have become the new system in the Organization of American States (OAS). This unwholesome development does not portend well for the future of the Organization which is increasingly becoming a rubber stamp for the will of a few governments. It also creates a huge cloud over the bilateral relations of nations within the hemisphere.

This undesirable development was brought into stark and glaring reality over events in Bolivia. The Permanent Council of the OAS, the Secretary-General, Luis Almagro, and the governments that are usually quick to lambaste other governments on human rights issues, have all been silent in what has been happening in Bolivia, starting with the coup d’état of November 10 that forced the elected President, Evo Morales, from office and into asylum in Mexico.

The Organization and Secretary-General Almagro have said nothing about the gross human rights violations against the indigenous people of Bolivia.

“At least eight young Bolivians were killed on Tuesday (November 19) when the country’s political crisis exploded into deadly violence in the city of El Alto. Another almost scandalous manifestation of the double standard being applied in the OAS – and one that Secretary-General Almagro has never explained – is that almost in the same words that the OAS electoral observation mission used to describe the elections of October 20 in Bolivia, another OAS electoral observer mission (EOM) to Honduras in 2017 denounced the election result in that country. But, neither the Secretary-General nor governments brought the matter to the Permanent Council, nor did they seek to conduct an audit of the election nor did they demand new elections.

The following is what the electoral mission to Honduras concluded in its November 27, 2017 report: “Based on the analysis contained in this report and the observations included in the two preliminary reports, the EOM considers that it observed a low-quality electoral process. The abundance of irregularities and deficiencies is such as to preclude full certainty regarding the outcome”.

A DV I cE INSPECTION MISCONCEPTION Inspections sometimes form a part of residential real estate transactions. They should be welcomed and not regarded with suspicion or as part of a witch hunt. Buyers should not try to use an inspection as a tool to find shortcomings that can be used to drive a price down. An inspection allows buyers and sellers to better understand the home’s condition. It can allay a buyer’s anxiety while at the same time provide a basis for repair suggestions.

Inspections are not just designed for older buildings. Problems can surface in both old and new homes. Ask sellers of new buildings about phase inspections, which are required at various stages in construction.

Not Just for Buyers: Inspections are useful for sellers as well as buyers. Pre-listing inspections allow sellers to identify potential problems before the home is listed and to remedy them.

If the sellers choose not to address the problems, the flaws may be factored into the asking price. It is better to discover defects before the home is listed, rather than to be put in the potentially awkward position of having a buyer draw them to your attention. Inspections are very useful because they allow both parties to make smart decisions and feel more confident about the transaction.

Providing Proof: Appraisal Must:

No one expects you to be able to appraise your home.

It’s a professional’s responsibility to provide an independent estimate of either your home’s value, or the value of a home you are interested in buying. While the bank uses the appraisal to guarantee a home’s tangible value against the mortgage, this also ensures a buyer is not overpaying for a home.

A buyer must select an appraiser from the lender’s approved list. An appraisal also works in the best interest of sellers as it allows them to price a home correctly and to minimise the likelihood of price reductions. When a home is advertised at reduced price, buyers may wonder why it didn’t sell at the original price and whether there is a problem with the home. The home often languishes on the market and the listing becomes stale, leading to further price drops.

Therefore, it’s important to get the price right the first time.

Sellers may also ask an experienced real estate professional to provide a Competitive Market Analysis (CMA) on what the home is worth based on the most recent closings in your area. Remember, a CMA will be based on sales data, not on what you may THINK your home is worth.

That is fair enough; all tense situations should be fully discussed to ascertain how the OAS can play a legitimate role. The discussion should be held on Dominica – but others as well including Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Haiti.

Dementia Isn’t the Same as Stupid

Watching your loved one’s memory deteriorate is a heart-wrenching experience. Whether it’s your aging parents or your spouse, the first thing they would like you to know is that they are losing their memory and not their minds, although many dictionaries lop dementia and demented in the same bucket. Their quirky behavior, however, sometimes has you wondering about the cause of their altered conduct. In any event, your loved ones want and need the respect you would be giving them if their short or longterm memories were in full form. Caring for them may be a little more than you anticipated, but when it comes to your parents or your spouse, as tough as it may be, you want to care for them with the same sensitivity you would like to be treated with if you were in a similar position.

Dementia

According to Wikipedia, dementia is a broad category of brain diseases that cause a long-term and often gradual decrease in the ability to think and remember… People experiencing this problem are sometimes fearful of completely losing their memory as well as their independence. An even greater fear for some is being taken advantage of and being considered a lunatic. Instead of acknowledging their memory loss, it is sometimes met with a justification of actions, contrary behavior, denial, violent outbursts, and even highly fabricated stories. This, unfortunately, causes friction with family and caregivers who are trying to assess and simplify a complicated situation to provide a healthy and stable environment for their loved one.

A Frightening Experience This disturbance to their memory can sometimes be very frightening to dementia sufferers, especially those who were independent. Now instead of leading, they are being led. Simple tasks which required little thinking are now brain-wrecking. For some, remembering to take their meds, brush their teeth, or even recognize rooms in their home is daunting. Regardless of their state of mind, many still resent being directed, especially if it is by someone they have always given directives to.

This constant resistance does become

tiresome to caregivers and family members who often just want to exit the roller coaster ride. Instead, they hang in, sacrificially giving their time and resources to ensure their loved one is safe and comfortable.

A large number of dementia sufferers have not accepted the full gravity of allowing the state of their affairs to dwindle. Despite the chaotic conditions, some fight to retain control of their activities, including driving a vehicle, home life, health care, and financial obligations. They have disregarded all indications that it is in their and the public’s best interest that they yield to a responsible loved ones care.

Dealing With Denial Perhaps one of the foremost challenges in caring for a loved one is when a parent or mate is in denial and won’t seek help dealing with the issue. That assistance may be medical in nature or as simple as hiring someone to take care of the daily chores. In cases such as this, there is strength in unity when family members come together to bring relief to an often trying situation. This eases the weight on one caregiver to share with several, especially if the primary caregiver is an elderly spouse.

Dementia, in many instances, if recognized early, is an issue that their physician may effortlessly address. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center and the University of Michigan Health System, taking vitamins such as B1 and B12 along with others not prevalent in aging people may help slow the progression of the disease. Laughing the situation off and not seeking suitable assistance could be the start of even more significant challenges. Whatever the case, you both know that a form of dementia has begun to set in and could increase.

Handling Abuse Having dementia is no excuse to behave poorly. If you are caring for someone with this condition, you have to be thick-skinned in many ways, but if the person is violent or verbally abusive, you must ensure that: 1. You are not agitating them. 2. Their medication is not the cause of their outburst. 3.

They are not being encouraged to misbehave by others.

Should the behavioral problem persist, you should seek professional advice on how best to handle the situation. Ground rules should be set if optimal care is expected. This can get sketchy however if there is outside interference from two-legged wolves (the well-dressed professionals and the unsuspecting delinquent pawns), who present themselves as friends. Their ultimate goal is to divide, conquer, and access the elderly person’s assets for selfish gain.

What Not To Do People challenged with dementia do not want to be talked down to or

shouted at. They want to be addressed respectfully. They wish to be advised of any plans being made on their behalf; even though you may have told them and they don’t remember. Dementia sufferers also claim to have a handle on disbursing their own medication and handling their finances. This is something that must be closely monitored as it could prove deadly if dosages are duplicated or forgotten. When it comes to medications, some visitors use this opportunity to shop for their medical supplies as well as spare change, in the homes of the unsuspecting elderly.

This is a problem that has become far too common, leaving the ailing person without proper pain medication and financial resources.

Taking Care

of

Yourself

Often, it’s the caregiver that is affected more than the one being cared for. There are so many stories of people neglecting themselves to afford their loved ones the best possible attention only to find a short time later they have taken ill or have passed away.

Here are a few tips to alleviate some of your caregiving load: • Fill your spiritual tank daily to ensure you have the strength, love, and compassion to deal with your loved one.

• Plan your days in advance.

Organize activities they love that won’t require your undivided attention.

• Reach out to the family for support. Not everyone can give a full day to help provide care, but they may be able to contribute in some way.

• Know when to say no, catering to all of their wants can have you spinning like a top all day.

• Not all advice is suitable for your situation. Decline suggestions that are not, but implement those that are feasible.

• Take time for yourself, even if it means leaving the laundry for another day.

• Don’t take it personally when family and friends receive complaints that you are not feeding or caring for them (especially after serving their favorite meal).

• Cook and freeze several meals in advance to avoid kitchen burnout.

• Invite nondisruptive family and friends over occasionally to divert the attention to them and not you.

• Let them listen to an inspirational audiobook while you relax.

Caring for a loved one is hard enough if they are old; add dementia to the mix, and you have a horse of another color. Don’t be disheartened by the noise in the marketplace, most of the self-professed experts on the matter have yet to walk for more than fifteen minutes in caregiving shoes. In the absence of assisted living centers or hospices, the care of your loved one is limited to home (yours or theirs), Sandilands Geriatric Hospital or an underfunded, overpopulated but wellintended home for the aged. Now that you are aware of some of the challenges faced by the caregivers, have you considered how you would prepare for old-age should your memory fail you?

Pastor Lincoln Young of Rock Sound, South Eleuthera was presented on Friday, November 8th, 2019, with the Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellow Award as an Honouree of the Rotary Club of Eleuthera, at Government House in New Providence by the Governor General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, The Honourable Cornelius A. Smith.

The presentation took place during the Annual Rotary Gala, which happens each year during the visit to the Bahamas by the Rotary 7020 District Governor, the position currently held by Delma Maduro. Pastor Young received the award for his humanitarian service to youth, community service and development of the culture of Junkanoo for the island of Eleuthera. Representing the Rotary Club of Eleuthera at the Annual Gala hosted at Government House, was President Susan Culmer, along with Past President Sherrin Cooper.

The closure of the Glass Window Bridge on Saturday evening, November 9th - the original date for ‘Pretty in Pink’ - compelled a change in the date from the Saturday evening to the following Sunday evening - November 10th. The weather eased during the day on Sunday, allowing the reopening of the bridge, so the GEMSS launch was a go.

RBPF Commissioner bestows Commendations on officers for Service Above & Beyond the Call of Duty

On Wednesday, November 20th, 2019, the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) Eleuthera Division, celebrated officers on the island who had gone above and beyond the call of duty during the year, earning the Commissioner’s Commendation.

Officer In Charge of the Eleuthera Division, Chief Superintendent Stephen Adderley, explaining the significance of the award, shared, “Commendations are issued by the Commissioner of Police, and are granted to persons for exemplary work, and going over and beyond what was required of them. Commendations are rare, so, when you have gotten a commendation from the Commissioner of Police that is something to be prized, as it represents excellent work - and it is not given out haphazardly. Usually there is a ceremony hosted in New Providence, where they bring the officers down and the Commissioner would present them with their commendations. So, it’s a part of rewarding officers for the work that they have done. Hopefully, at the end of the day it would reward them by elevations in service.”

Wide support for Hon. Rev Bethel & Church on Pastoral Anniversary & move to new Church building

The People’s Restoration Baptist Church, led by former Minister of Cabinet and Member of Parliament - Senior Pastor Hon. Reverend Philip M. Bethel, saw a transition on Sunday, November 3rd, 2019 from its former location to a newly built sanctuary on Queen’s Highway in Palmetto Point.

A bevy of pastors and clergy from far and wide - across the island, and out of New Providence were in attendance in recognition of Reverend Bethel’s 11th Pastoral Anniversary, and in support of the congregation’s move into its’ new location. They were also joined by a large contigent of immediate and extended Bethel family members, several hundred Eleuthera community members, along with former Prime Minister Hon. Perry Christie, current leader of the PLP, Philip ‘Brave’ Davis, Central and South Eleuthera Member of Parliament, Hank Johnson, and other former political colleagues.

The service of dedication and celebration, held under the theme, “Standing on the promises of God”, began at 3pm in the afternoon, after a brief ceremony at the former location, less than a mile away, from where attendees marched along with music provided by the Freedom Marching band to the new edifice.

The guest speaker on the afternoon, Reverend Tradjene Jadorette of New Covenant Baptist Church, in his message during the special ceremony, admonished the capacity audience in the new church, as Christians, to not be driven just by what they could see, but to be led by the Spirit and the Word of God. The act of dedication followed the message, along with a number of special tributes - from visiting pastors, former colleagues and family members.

Kiwanis Club in South Eleuthera, partners with others to assist Dorian Impacted members of the community On Friday evening, November 22nd, 2019, the Kiwanis Club of South Eleuthera, partnered with the Church of God, led by Pastor Bradley Ferguson in Rock Sound, South Eleuthera, in an awesome endeavour to host a Concert of Gospel Music to raise funds in support of displaced children and their families from Abaco, currently housed at the shelter location at Ingraham’s Inn in Tarpum Bay. However, he warned that the island had and was still seeing a significant number of crimes of opportunity. “So, we ask that you assist the Police as much as possible by not giving criminals the opportunity. Secure your residences, as well as your business places,” said Sands.

We know this is the festive season, where people go out and have fun, but we are asking that if you drink, do not drive - have a designated driver. Be responsible, as the life you save may be your very own. So, have fun, but be careful about it.”

Superintendent Sands summed up, saying that the Police would be there for the public, to do all that they possibly could. “We will spare no effort - this is what we do, and we enjoy doing it.”

MOH Striving to Implement

Health Information Management System

By Llonella Gilbert NASSAU, Bahamas -- Minister of Health the Hon. Dr. Duane Sands said the health system in The Bahamas has been paperbased for decades, but in this 21st century, the country needs to be further along.

“The vision of the Ministry of Health (MOH) is to implement a cost effective Health Information Management System, inclusive of an Electronic Medical Records system to ensure timely access to and coding of information, rivaling that in place in our private sector and in leading jurisdictions,” Dr. Sands explained during the First Annual Medical Coding Symposium held at the British Colonial Hilton, Friday, November 8, 2019.

He said the Ministry of Health is engaged with the Pan American Health Organization to strengthen data management in primary care clinics.

“This project aims to transition hospital and national health records into electronic formats. Outputs expected are improved administrative efficiency, integration of data across diverse recording platforms and better portability of records.”

Dr. Sands added that to achieve the Ministry’s goals, the healthcare system requires a new cadre of health care workers who would need to be equipped with the competencies and skill sets to strengthen the management of health data and monitor and evaluate health care being provided, i.e. coders are needed.

He stated that like the complexities of the health care system, health care data collection from the various Government, NonGovernment and Private Sector entities is not static. Therefore, continuous restructuring, integration, innovation and realignment to achieve goals and objectives is required.

He noted that Medical Coders are professionals with a specialty of Medical Coding and are a part of the wider field of health care administrators. “You are trained and certified to translate medical information generated by Physicians, Nurses, Therapists, Technicians and other health care providers.”

The Health Minister said, “Your knowledge and skills is essential to Statisticians, Researchers, Public Health Officials as well as Internal Auditors. You are aware of the many ramifications that poor or inaccurate coding can cause to fiscal health, a health institute or public policy as a whole.”

He told the medical coders that it is therefore essential that they use the symposium to promote and highlight the benefits that their profession can bring to the health, wellbeing and the quality of care provided in The Bahamas.

The Health Minister explained that codes create the ability to review and use data with greater specificity regarding clinical conditions and services.

He added that codes also provide payers, policy makers and providers, with better information to design and implement a pay-for-performance programme and decrease opportunities for fraud, under performance and better use for resources including investment.

Energized local turnout for CIBC First Caribbean’s Annual Walk For The Cure

Warm Up - before setting out on the road The CIBC First Caribbean 2019 ‘Walk For the Cure’, now in its’ 8th year, took place in Governor’s Harbour, Central Eleuthera on Saturday, November 9th. The morning event, which began bright and early, at 6:30am, was replicated throughout the Caribbean region, at branch locations - from the Bahamas to Trinidad and 14 nations and territories in between.

In Governor’s Harbour, Acting Branch Manager at CIBC First Caribbean, Mr. Maydo Alce, confirmed that 89 people had donated and registered for the Walk. “Cancer is something that touches each and every one of us, and this is CIBC First Caribbean’s commitment to the community, and our way of fighting back. So, all of the donations made here today and throughout the Bahamas go to our brothers and sisters to fight against this dreadful disease,” he shared.

After dozens of registered participants had shown up to take part in the Walk which would take them on a challenging circuit from the Bank, through the Governor’s Harbour township, including up and down the Buccaneer Hill, and back to the bank, located in the heart of the township - Mr. Alce, thanked everyone who had come out to support the Walk For the Cure. He also recognized the partnership efforts of the Cancer Society of the Bahamas - Eleuthera branch, which had assisted with registrations, as well as community sponsors, including: Eleuthera Supply, Our Friendly Store, and Ronnie’s Hide-Away - for their generous donations, and the Police for assisting with security on the road. Mr. Alce, also thanked his team of employees, and singled out Mrs. Gerina Albury, who he said had been, ‘a driving force behind all of this’.

Before the walkers took to the road, Corporal Bernard Wallace, from the Eleuthera Police division, led the group in a series of warm up exercises to ready them for the challenging route.

The ‘Walk’, which is characterized by CIBC First Caribbean as its’ flagship

foundation activity, is described by them as one of the Caribbean’s largest cancer fundraising and educational initiatives, with more than USD $2.2 million raised over the seven years that it has been held.

The ‘Walk For the Cure’ event has seen continuous growth in funds raised since its’ inception, from $30,000 in the first year, to USD $512,367.39 raised in 2018 - with a growing network of corporate partners and sponsors, and the efforts of hundreds of CIBC First Caribbean employees credited for the success.

According to CIBC First Caribbean, “The funds generated from the walk which is held in partnership with cancer care organisations in each territory are truly life-changing. The funds are used primarily to assist with the purchase and maintenance of equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The funds are also used to provide assistance, care and counselling to patients and their families as well as to raise awareness, and stress the importance of early detection, through education campaigns across the region.”

Getting Our Spawn On! The Bahamas Coral Innovation Hub at the Cape Eleuthera Institute alongside the Perry Institute for Marine Science hosted Secore International’s Coral Spawning and Propagation Workshop for a variety of aquarists and researchers. The workshop aimed to educate aquarists working with corals about innovative larval propagation technologies and methods, focusing on the importance of increasing genetic diversity in coral restoration.

We concentrated on the broadcast spawner mountainous star coral (Orbicella faveolata), which reproduces by releasing gametes bundles into the water column.

Fertilization occurs when these bundles, containing sperm and eggs, burst at the surface. Fertilized embryos ultimately develop into swimming larvae. Since coral

species synchronize their spawning, the workshop attendees set out to John Millar’s Blue Hole just after sunset on select nights following the full moon. The team successfully collected bundles during two of these night dives, and gametes were cross-fertilized on site. From the volume of gamete bundles collected, we estimate that we had around 3 million embryos!

Once the embryos develop into larvae and start to swim, they search for somewhere to settle and transform into a polyp. Ceramic and concrete substrates, preconditioned to have Crustose Coralline Algae growth and a microbial biofilm known to promote larval settlement, were placed in the two Secore International coral larval rearing pools stationed at the Cape Eleuthera Marina, and

some were kept in our wetlab facilities. Of the 3 million fertilized embryos, approximately 600,000 were placed in the pools and 400,000 in the CEI wetlab tanks. The remaining 2 million were released in the sea.

In the weeks following the workshop, the CEI Coral Team checked the substrates for coral settlers/recruits. More than 1,000 substrates with approximately 77,000 corals have been outplanted at Bamboo (im-

Tamia Knowles, a young 5th grader of Emma E. Cooper Primary in Palmetto Point, traveled to New Providence to represent the island of Eleuthera in the 2019 National Religious Studies Speech Competition, on Friday, November 22nd, 2019 and put forth her very best. She did not place in the top three this year, but her powerful speech, made its mark.

This was her second appearance in the national competition, having won at the Eleuthera District level in 2018, then placing 2nd overall in the Nationals during November 2018. As an intelligent young girl, with an

indomitable spirit - not allowing a battle with physical disabilities to limit her potential - Tamia embodies courage and tenacity.

She had to go through a tough set of peers this year to get to her final spot in New Providence, as, fresh off of the midterm break, students in grades four through six, throughout primary schools in Eleuthera participated in school-based religious studies speech competitions, with each school’s winner going on to represent at the district level at the end of the first week in November.

The theme for this year‘s hotly contested district competition was, “Together we are better; together we can.” The students were expected to present a persuavise message about the power of unity, sharing real life examples of how working together can bring about positive changes in their homes, schools and their communities. Also, in keeping with the event concept, scriptural references were required to be used throughout the speech to support the ideas presented.

Before the competition got underway, duing a brief opening ceremony, District Education Superintendent for Eleuthera, Mr. Michael Culmer, encouraged the young competitors to do their best, saying, “You have already distinguished yourselves at your schools, you are Eleuthera’s Winners”, referring to the fact that each student representing their school had already won their school-based speech competitions to be there that morning. Mr. Culmer also thanked all the parents, teachers, and coaches who were out to support the students.

Last year’s Eleuthera winner, who also placed 2nd overall in the 2018 National Religious Studies Speech Competition, Tamia Knowles of EEC primary, was the first presenter on Friday morning in front of the panel of judges. She came out even stronger this year, with a compelling message about Bahamians coming together after the tragedy of the monster Hurricane Dorian. Not only was her speech well delivered and emotionally charged, pulling in her audience, it was also presented from memory, with no reading aids. bookings from all the other major source markets are ahead, France 9.8%, the UK 0.9%, Canada 8.2%, Argentina 8.1% and the rest of the world collectively 3.2%. The current leader is the Netherlands, 42.1% ahead.

However, the outlook is not universally positive. Forward bookings to the top destination in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic, are currently 14.2% behind and those to the Bahamas and Aruba are 6.4% and 1.4% behind respectively. Encouraging growth is seen from Puerto Rico, 28.0% ahead, but that is really a recovery story, as tourism to the island was hit hard by hurricane Maria in December 2017. Looking back on the first three quarters of the year, travel to the Caribbean has grown healthily, 5.2% up on the same period in 2018.

The star source market has been the USA, with 56% share and 9.0% growth. However, other major origin markets have been mixed, with France down 2.2%, the UK down 4.7% and Argentina down 5.7%. However, Canada has been up 15.3%, Chile up 17.0% and the rest of the world up 1.4%.

This season’s most devastating hurricane, Dorian, which came at the end of August and early September, ravaged the most northerly parts of the Bahamas but left other parts relatively undamaged. The result is that some parts of the country saw a drop in arrivals, where others experienced a significant increase. Travel to Freeport and Marsh Harbour in September fell dramatically, by 50.9% and 67.9% respectively. The impact on Nassau, the capital and the largest airport, was more limited, as arrivals went down by 7.4%. Travel to Georgetown and North Eleuthera was up, 10.6% and 30.7% respectively.

Hurricanes have been a major scourge, affecting travel to the Caribbean in recent years, with some islands left badly damaged.

ForwardKeys research shows that recovering from the impact of a major hurricane can take years. So far, it has taken Puerto Rico 15 months to reach 70% of pre-hurricane arrivals and it has taken St Maarten 20 months. In the case of the Bahamas, ForwardKeys expects the recovery to take less time because the initial rebound in both post-hurricane arrivals has been stronger: just one month after the hurricane, the Bahamas has reached 80% of

pre-hurricane arrivals.

There were music renditions from Johnny Gaitor and his family from the Wesley Methodist Church in Governor’s Harbour, while St. Stephen’s Baptist church brought a taste of community marching band with young drummers, and trumpet play by Cladwell Farrington Jr. Young Abaco student, Milana Liberal, currently staying within the Ingraham’s Inn shelter, performed an emotional dance routine to the song, ‘Arms wide open’, sharing her testimony of survival through powerful rhythmic display. Performances continued with soloists from a variety of churches in Central and South Eleuthera, each followed by a time of generous giving by the appreciative audience.

Janelle Smith, a teacher who had been posted in Abaco before Hurricane Dorian, and stripped of her material possessions and more, who was now temporarily posted at Preston Albury High School in South Eleuthera, found solace, she said, in volunteering with the South Eleuthera Kiwanis organization, as she had also been an active member of the Central Abaco Kiwanis before Dorian. On Friday evening, she shared that three of her former students from Abaco were there in the audience, with unimaginable stories of survival. Ms. Smith expressed her delight that she could be a part of the fundraising event for such a worthy cause.

By the end of the concert, the Kiwanis team; including President Natalie Russell, Secretary Margarita Culmer, Sheila Mae Sands, Janelle Smith, and Adair Mitchell, announced that more than $800 in cash had been collected, with another $500 pledged. So, more than $1,200 was raised during the evening.

Carson Charlow of Governor’s Harbour, used a creative puzzle prop to illustrate how coming together towards a shared vision results in achieving that common goal. Geniyaa Scavella of Spanish Wells, highlighted the family unit as a prime example of individuals with distinct roles, working together in unity, and used her voice in song to highlight her message.

Deshante Cooper of Deep Creek highlighted the concept of ‘united we stand, divided we fall’, while Nacassiah Armbrister of Rock Sound stressed that ‘with unity there is power’. Joel Kemp of Laura Anderson primary and Breanna Thompson of Hatchet Bay also spoke of making things happen by being united rather than divided. Kelisha Rolle of Wemyss Bight, who rounded out the presentations, highlighted the concept of coming together being a positive action, staying together as an example of progress, and working

together embodying success.

Mr. Kirkwood Cleare, with the District Education Office, following all the speeches, thanked and commended the students on the quality of their presentations, and thanked the teachers and parents for the work done with the children. The panel of judges, who included; Father John Johnson; Mrs. Bekera Taylor, and Mrs. Elmena Bethell, then retired to another area to discuss who they thought were the top presenters that morning, and to choose the overall winner, who would go on to represent the island of Eleuthera in the National Religious Studies Speech Competition in New Providence.

With deliberations completed, the judging panel returned and announced the final results to the expectant audience - beginning with third place, which went to Nacassiah Armbrister of Rock Sound primary (RSP). Delena Rolle of Tarpum Bay primary (TBP) was announced as the second place finisher, and for the second year in a row, Tamia Knowles of Emma E. Cooper primary (EEC), now a 5th grader, was chosen as the WINNER in the 2019 Eleuthera District Religious Studies speech competition.

PM discusses immigration challenges with European Union Commissioner

Prime Minister Minnis noted that first-time applicants of work permits must apply while outside of The Bahamas and employers of work permit holders must ensure that safe and suitable housing is provided for employees.

During the meeting, held Thursday 14 November, Commissioner Stylianides and the Prime Minister also discussed how the EU could provide increased humanitarian and development assistance.

The EU was among the multilateral agencies to provide relief and assistance immediately following the storm.

The meeting at the European Union’s headquarters marked the end of a series of meetings between the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers and officials from the EU and African Carib-

Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Darren Henfield, and Bahamas Ambassador to Belgium Ms. Maria O’Brien, met with candidates vying for the post of ACP Secretary-General.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, the Hon. Carl Bethel, and Ambassador O’Brien, met with Tiina Astola, Director-General for Justice and Consumers at the European Commission.

Minister of Financial Services, Trade & Industry, and Immigration and Ambassador O’Brien met with Director-General Jolita Butkeviciene, International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO), of the European Commission.

The Prime Minister returned to The Bahamas on Friday 15 November.

BRUSSELS, Belgium – In a meeting with the European Commissioner responsible for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis outlined challenges faced by The Bahamas as it relates to illegal migrants.

Prime Minister Minnis highlighted the state of the country’s already stretched social resources faced by the Government and its impact on the country, the Bahamas Government’s strategy to prevent the re-establishment of unsafe shanty towns and the importance of protecting the country’s borders.

The Prime Minister noted that immediately following the passage of Hurricane Dorian all residents displaced

by Hurricane Dorian, including undocumented migrants, were evacuated and provided with shelter, food and medical treatment at the expense of the Bahamian Government. Education assistance was also provided.

Repatriations were suspended for a period of time for non-documented residents affected by Hurricane Dorian in the immediate aftermath of the storm.

Prime Minister Minnis emphasized that all undocumented migrants would be treated humanely and reiterated that The Bahamas is a country of laws and governed by the rule of law. Therefore, the Government is obliged

Iram Lewis along with architects, engineers and planners from the Ministry of Public Works, Grand Bahama Port Authority, the University of Miami, private firms of South Florida, members of the Architects Board and the former Chief Housing Officer, traveled to Abaco November 11, 2019 to assess damaged and destroyed buildings, Marsh Harbour to Cooper’s Town; and review adherence to the building code, among factors contributing to

the large scale of destruction by Hurricane Dorian. They determined that there needed to be greater public adherence to the building code. And given wind and water damage, there is a need for government to look at elevating the roadways; adding more berms, levees or seawalls further inland from the shoreline. Land in the Bahamas has always been a tangled mess. Prior to the implementation of internal self-governance in the nineteen sixties much care was taken to document the ownership of our lands in most of the major islands.

There were four types of title in which land was categorized, Government (Public), Private (Personal or Company), Commonage (Original People of Location), and Generation (Family Descendants). Due to the lack of care being taken to consistently document and record the sales and transfers of inheritances, many large tracts of land were abandoned without clear title of present ownership.

While we were fully owned and governed by our Royal owners, with minimum technology and limited ability to monitor the vast and not so easy to access land throughout the Islands, many landowners found it too complicated and expensive to properly document their claims and entitlements.

This resulted in property being poorly surveyed and frequently abandoned without a trace of the true owner or heirs. To provide access to such abandoned properties the Government enacted the Quieting of Title Act which enables a person to demonstrate an interest in a designated property and through due process gain acceptable title to that land. Needless to say, much

of the abandoned properties were claimed by persons who had financial ability to pay the required costs of documentation and access to legal services. This has resulted in many heirs today having little or no knowledge of what they own.

In the early 1960’s my dad and uncles acquired and made available in Governor’s Harbour home lots 50’ x 100’ of which six lots were used to provide relief residences to persons left homeless by hurricane Betsy, which became known as “Betsy Village”. There were other small areas where home lots were made available, both before and after that. But nothing that met the demand for homes within G.H. It will be interesting to note that we are completely encircled by the land known to us as ‘French Leave’, owned by foreigners and inaccessible to us. For any further expansion to take place in this area it was, and remains necessary to access properties to the north or south of G.H. Because of the continuing selloff of locally owned land to foreign ‘developers’ the cost of purchasing land in this area has become extremely restrictive to young people, and by design the local population benefit from the employment provided by foreign home building, while they themselves rent and have no where to develop and build their own homes and businesses.

There is also no local farming taking place because of the lack of available agricultural land. We truly inherited a strange land!

perish”. The present Government was voted into office with an overwhelming majority on the promise that It would make land available to all Bahamians, especially to young persons; that remains to be seen, because no tangible changes have taken place to-date!

It may or may not be known to all, that you do not own the beach or coastal land that borders your documented property. In the Bahamas you only own the land that is surveyed and recorded in your title deeds, however, many people have purchased lands under this false assumption; misinformed by sales persons eager to benefit from a fast sale. Our own government, elected by the people, to protect the rights of every Bahamian is greatly at fault for failing to protect the rights of all.

From the ‘give away’ of Freeport, Paradise Island, West Bay Street, Mayaguana and more, Bahamians are disposed and made slaves in their own country, thanks to our “COLONIAL” masters and now their “elected’ successors. You want to be ‘Royal’ and independent at the same time?!

My first understanding of land ownership in this country came as a shock to me when I realized that even though you may hold a title deed of transfer, what you truly have is only a permission to occupy and use the titled land. Any object or element above, on, or below that property remains in the ownership of the Government. That is why you can make no alterations to it without approval and are required to pay

PM Expresses Support For Decriminalising the Possession of Small Amounts of Marijuana Prime Minister Minnis released a statement on Sunday evening, November 24, expressing government’s intent to reform the country’s marijuana laws, following the release of a report by the Bahamas National Commission on Marijuana. He also highlighted his support of the reforms including the expunging of records of Bahamians convicted of possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Statement: “A week ago I expressed support for decriminalising the possession of small amounts of marijuana and making the substance legal for medicinal and scientific purposes.

Our laws regarding the possession of small amounts of marijuana have unfortunately led to the arrest, prosecution, conviction and punishment of many Bahamians.

Some of these people have been burdened with

criminal records, making travel and finding work more difficult.

Reforming our marijuana laws and changing how we treat people with small possession convictions is a matter of social justice.

I support expunging the records of Bahamians convicted of possession of small amounts of marijuana. They deserve to move on with their lives free and clear of a criminal conviction.

I eagerly await the release of the report by the Bahamas National Commission on Marijuana. My Government will use the report’s findings to help reform our marijuana laws.

Part of this reform should be expunging the records of Bahamians convicted of possession of small amounts of marijuana. Being from the Over-the-Hill community, I have seen firsthand how our current laws especially harm young people from modest

backgrounds.

The Commission’s findings will be widely circulated and we welcome the input of Bahamians as we make these long-needed changes to various laws.

A Rehabilitation of Offenders Committee has been formed and is reviewing a number of matters for recommendation, including the possible expunging of some criminal records for possession of small amounts of marijuana.

We will also take into consideration the recommendations of this committee.”

Arrest Reference to Murder On Monday 28th October 2019, at 3:49pm officers from the Governors Harbour Police Station along with officers from the Immigration Department while conducting inquiries in the area of Governor’s Harbour, arrested, interviewed and cautioned two adult males reference to two separate murder investigations which occurred in New Providence.

Officers transported both males to New Providence reference to further inquiries.

Arrest Reference to Breach of the Immigration Act. - On Monday 28th October 2019, between 7:45am & 1:10pm officers from the Governors Harbour Police Station along with Immigration Officers arrested and cautioned three Haitian National males for Immigration Purposes.

Arrest Reference to Murder - On Wednesday 30th October 2019, at 11:40am, officers from the Governor’s Harbour Police Station arrested and cautioned an adult female reference to murder. Officers transported the female to Nassau for further Investigations.

Traffic Offence Report - At 6:30pm on Thursday 31st October, 2019 officers while on mobile Patrol in the area of Hatchet Bay reported a male driver of a blue Honda vehicle for various traffic offences such as unlicensed, uninsured vehicle and driving a vehicle in a defective condition.

Road Traffic Accident Report - On Thursday 31st October 2019 at about 9:10pm officers from the Governors Harbour Police Station were called to an accident with injury in the area of Paradise Service Plaza Palmetto Point, both vehicles were extensively damaged and both drivers sought medical assistance.

Road Traffic Accident Report - On Saturday 9th November 2019 at about 12:20am officers from the Governors Harbour Police Station received reports of a Road Traffic accident in the area of Savannah Sounds Queens Highway. Officers responded to the scene where two vehicles, a Honda Inspire and a Honda Fit were extensively damage. EMS were called to the scene and occupants of both vehicles

were taken to the Palmetto Point Clinic reference to Medical assistance.

Traffic Offence Report - On Saturday 9 November 2019 sometime around 1:40pm, officers reported the driver of a Nissan note for driving the vehicle south along Queen’s Highway Governor’s Harbour unlicensed, not-inspected and uninsured for the current Year.

Arrest Reference to Possession of Dangerous Drugs - On Monday 11th 2019 at 3:40pm officers arrested an adult male of Princess Street, Hatchet Bay in the area of Baby Johnson Lane reference to Possession of Dangerous Drugs. He was later charged with the offence to appear before the Magistrate court 2nd December 2019 at 9:30am Arrest Reference to Breach of the Immigration Act - On Monday 11th November 2019 officers from the Immigration Department conducted an Operation in the area of Governors Harbour where four adult Male all Haitian Nationals were arrested reference to Breach of the Immigration Act. On Tuesday 12th November all of the males were transported to the Detention Center New Providence.

Road Traffic Accident Report - Tuesday 12th November 2019, about 5:48am officers were called to a vehicle and pedestrian accident in the area of Queens Highway, near the northern entrance to Palmetto Point.

Investigations are ongoing.

Traffic Offence Report - On Tuesday 12th November 2019, 5:30pm officers while on mobile patrol in the area of Cupids Cay reported an adult male for driving without a Driver’s license and Driving an unlicensed, uninspected vehicle and driving while not covered by third party risk Insurance.

The female owner of the vehicle was also reported for permitting the driver to drive without a Driver’s License and permitting to drive an unlicensed vehicle.

Arrest Reference to Possession of Dangerous Drugs - On Thursday 14th November 2019 about 1:25pm officers while on mobile patrol in the area of Baby Johnson Lane arrested an adult male reference to Possession of Dangerous Drugs. He was transported to the Police Station where he was interviewed and charged for the offence to appear before Magistrate Court 2nd December 2019.

Arrest Reference to Possession of Dangerous Drugs - On Friday 15th November 2019 about 8:04pm officers while on mobile patrol in the area of Baby Johnson Lane arrested an adult male reference to Possession of Dangerous Drugs. He was transported to the Police Station where he was interviewed and charged for the offence.

Road Traffic Accident Report - On Saturday 16th November, 2019, at about 2:59am, officers received report of a single car accident overturned vehicle in the area of Edmonds Lake. Officers arrived on scene and observed a black jeep overturned on the eastern side of the street, facing a northeastern direction with extensive damages. The driver of the vehicle had minor injuries.

He was seen by medical personnel.

Investigations are ongoing.

Officers responded to the scene where they met a white Honda vehicle and a Mitsubishi Jeep both extensively damaged. The Occupants of both vehicles complained of pain and were transported to the Palmetto Point Clinic for medical assistance. Investigations are ongoing.

He was subsequently charged in reference to Disorderly Behavior contrary to section 206(1) of the Penal code and Obscene Language contrary to section 208(2) of the penal code Chapter 84.

Causing Harm Report:Police Action Requested - An adult female of Clarence Street Harbour Island came to the Harbour Island Police Station on 2/11/19 sometime around 1:25pm and reported that while at Beyond the Reef Night Club she was tripped down and body slammed by a male known to her for no reason. She further reported that there was a video circulating on social media of the incident. Police action requested.

Causing Harm Arrest - On Sunday 3rd November, 2019 at around 3:40 pm police in at the Harbour Island Police Station with an adult male suspect of Trianna Shores, Harbour Island. The suspect was reportedly arrested and cautioned while at his residence in reference to Causing Harm, a complaint made on 2/11/19 by an adult female. Police conducted an interview of the suspect who was subsequently charged with Causing Harm contrary to section 135(1) of the Penal Code chapter 84. He was granted bail in the sum of $500.00 with one (1) suretor to appear before Magistrate Court on 5th December 2019.

Assault Report Police Warning Requested On Saturday 2nd November 2019 at 9:48pm an adult female of Dunmore Street, Harbour Island came to the HIPS with her son, who reported to her that while walking home from a pool party on Colebrook Street, he was approached by a male he knows, who slapped him in the back of his head.

Assault Report - On Monday 4th November, 2019 at around 12:45 am an adult male of Colebrooke Street came to the Harbour Island Police Station and reported that at about 12:30 am while at Sammy’s Bar, Bay Street a male known to him, hit him on the right side of his head with a beer bottle causing pain. Drug Arrest - Police reported that while in the area of Love Lane harbour Island conducting road checks he beckoned and stopped a red golf cart driven by a lone male in reference to Dangerous Drugs and Firearms. As a result a search was conducted of the driver who identified himself - an adult male of Chapel Street. Officers discovered in his right fist one (1) foil wrapping with a grassy like substance suspected to be marijuana. He was then placed under arrest, further cautioned and later transported to the Harbour Island Police Station and handed over.

Sudden Death Report- On Tuesday 5th November 2019 at 6:35pm police responded to the scene of a reported sudden death where they met nurse Woodside and nurse Banzuela who pointed them to a northern bedroom of a residence with a elderly lady namely Susan Sawyer DOB 5-11-38, who appeared unresponsive. Nurse Banzuela c/o Harbour Island Community Clinic pronounced time of death 6:30pm on Tuesday 5th November 2019.

Sudden death report - On Wednesday 6/11/19 at about 3:42pm Nurse Marjorie Banzuela C/O Harbour Island Community Clinic contacted Harbour Island Police Station via phone and reported that Norma Ann Albury D.O.B 18/2/34 aged 85yrs old of Gaol Lane died suddenly while at her residence situated Gaol Lane.

Stealing report - On Thursday 7/11/19 at about 5:10pm an adult female in at Harbour Island Station and reported that sometime between 12:10pm 7/11/19 and 3:00pm 7/11/19 some unknown person went inside her bag and stole her black Samsung S7 Edge s/n# unknown valued at $250 and the black casing which contained $150 in Bahamian new fifty dollars notes from out the bag while on her classroom desk at Harbour island All Age School she suspects it may have happened when she left the classroom to use the restroom leaving her bag on her desk. Police action requested.

Causing Harm Report Police Action Requested On Saturday 9th November 2019 at 12:30pm an adult female of Blackwood, Eleuthera came to the HIPS and reported that she was sitting in the back of GG shop on Dunmore Street, bagging some sugar apples and talking to herself when a male she knows approached her, accused her of talking about him and then started beating her in her head and face while his wife held her hands behind her back. She requested police action in this matter.

Drug Arrest Report - On Tuesday 12th November 2019 at 11:25am police came in to the HIPS with an adult male suspect of Pitt Street, and another of Trianna Shores Harbour Island who had been arrested and cautioned while in the area of Island Luck Bay Street, Harbour Island in reference to Possession of Dangerous Drugs. They appeared to be in good health and were both searched and placed in a cell. Police interviewed and subsequently Charged the suspects in reference to Possession of Dangerous Drugs contrary to section 29(6)and 29(2)B of the Dangerous Drug Act Chapter 228.

The suspects were granted bail and released in the sum of 1,000.00 to appear before court on the 5th December 2019.

Stealing Report Police Action Requested On Tuesday 5th November 2019 at 11:30Am an adult male of Love Lane, Harbour island came to the Harbour Island Police Station and reported that sometime on Friday 1st November 2019 while at his jobsite and property situated Colebrooke Street Harbour Island which was damaged by structural fire, a blue Yamaha 2000 convertible generator which was kept on the site valued at $1,000.00 went missing. Checks were made with negative results.

came to her residence where she is caring for her sick elderly parents. She further reported that he went to her mother’s bedroom window screaming, “grandma, Grandma I aint eat for the day”. The complainant further reported that her son then went to the front door shouting the same thing. She reported that both she and her brother went and asked her son to please leave because their mother was ill and could not help him. She alleged that at this time, he said to her, “you whenever I see you alone I will kill you. You will get it” and he then picked up a large stone and threw it at her before running away.

The complainant reported being in immediate fear for her life. Police action requested.

Arrest Report Ref: Threats of Death, Trespassing and Possession of Dangerous Drugs On Monday 18th November 2019 at 5:15am police came into S-3 with an adult male suspect of Pitt Street, Harbour Island in reference to Possession of Dangerous Drugs, Threats of Death and Trespassing. He was arrested and cautioned while in the area of Pitt Street. When a search of the suspect was made, a clear plastic bag was found in his left front pocket containing a large quantity of grassy like substance suspected to be marijuana. He was further cautioned and transported to S-3 for processing.

Stealing Arrest - On Tuesday 19th November, 2019 at about 10:50 am an adult male of Munnings Street came to Harbour Island Police Station where he was arrested and cautioned in reference to Stealing.

Search Warrant executed Police on 19th November armed with a sworn search warrant searched the property of an adult male of Munnnings Street (Harbour Island) in reference to stolen property where police recovered 1 Yamaha EF2000IS V2 inverter generator. As a result the suspect was further cautioned in reference to Stealing. Police interviewed the suspect under caution who declined to cooperate. He was subsequently charged in reference to Stealing contrary to section 345 of the penal code. The suspect was granted bail in the sum of $2,000 with one suretor to appear before court on 5th December 2019.

Stealing from a vessel Police action requested On Thursday 21/11/19 at about 2:10pm an adult male of Pitt Street Harbour Island came in at Harbour Island Police Station and reported that sometime between 7:00Am 20/11/19 and 12:00pm 21/11/19 some unknown person/s stole a steering wheel valued at $300 throttle controls valued at $300 R.P.M Gauges valued at $200 and two gray J.L Audio speakers from his 25ft white Seahorse Boat which was parked in his father’s lot on Duke Street.

Assault & Threats of Harm Report - Police Action Requested A Young adult female Dunmore Street, Harbour Island came to the HIPS and reported that at around 11:30am while walking east along Munnings Street in the area of Jackie’s Shop, a male known to her, approached her and poked her in her temple shouting that she better leave his name out of her mouth. She further reported that this male threatened to slap her off her feet placing her in fear for her safety. Police action requested.

Drug Arrest Location: Gene’s Bay Dock On Monday 11th November, 2019 while in the area of the Gene’s Bay Dock, Lower Bogue, an officer c/o Operations Support Unit was approached by a male known to him of Gregory Town. The officer noticed a bulge protruding from his right front pocket. As the officer approached the suspect he grabbed for his pocket and attempted to flee, however, he was restrained by the officer along with other members of the public, whom the officer called to his aid after the assailant violently resisted arrest, and attempted to throw the package from his pocket into the water. Upon detaining the suspect Police removed from his right front pocket five (5) packages of ‘High Grade’ cannabis oil and five (5) packages containing a green grassy substance, suspected of being marijuana. The suspect was cautioned and arrested in reference to possession of dangerous drugs, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

The Suspect was transported to the NEPS for further processing.

On Tuesday 12th November 2019, Police while at the North Eleuthera Police Station, interviewed the suspect under caution, and subsequently charged him with (2) counts of possession of dangerous drugs.

He was further cautioned and did not respond.

Location: Cistern, Upper Bogue, Eleuthera - On Wednesday 23rd October 2019, sometime around 8:55pm, police acting on intelligence, proceeded to a bushy area located in Cistern, Upper Bogue.

The officer conducted a search of the said location, which resulted in the discovery of a blue “Everest” back pack, containing a white plastic bag, with (5) clear plastic packages, each containing a quantity of suspected marijuana. The same was retrieved and taken to the North Eleuthera Police Station, where it was preserved and secured for further investigations. Estimated Weight: (4.5) lbs Arrest/Released Pending On Sunday 27th October 2019, sometime around 3:20pm, police while at the North Eleuthera Police Station, arrested and cautioned an adult female suspect, of Upper Bogue, Eleuthera in reference to possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply. The suspect was interviewed under caution, and denied having any knowledge of the drugs. A search warrant was executed on her residence reference to dangerous drugs with negative results. She was subsequently released from custody pending further investigations.

Causing Damage & Trespassing Location: Skyline Drive, Lower Bogue, Eleuthera On Friday 25th October 2019, sometime around 4:36pm, an adult female of Skyline Drive, Lower Bogue, contacted the North Eleuthera Police Station and reported that she arrived home and found that some unknown person/s appeared to have attempted to enter her home.. Police assistance requested Traffic Accident Report Location: Upper Bogue, Eleuthera

On Friday 25th October 2019, sometime around 6:00pm, an unknown caller contacted the North Eleuthera Police Station and reported that a traffic accident had just occurred in the area of Queens Highway, Upper Bogue, Eleuthera.

Police assistance requested. Police responded to the scene, where they found a Blue Honda Accord license, which had sustained extensive damages, positioned on the side of the road. The driver of the vehicle had left the scene prior to the Police arrival. Investigations are continuing.

Traffic Accident Report

Location: Queens Highway, Gregory Town On Saturday 26th October 2019, sometime around 11:18pm, an officer and reported that he received information from an adult male that he was involved in a serious accident on Queens Highway, Gregory Town, near The Cove Resort. He requested Police assistance.

Police responded to the scene, where he saw and spoke with an adult male of Current, Eleuthera, who reported that sometime around 10:20pm, while travelling south along Queens Highway, in a black Nissan Rogue near Gregory Town, he attempted to maneuver a curve at approximately 40mph, however, he lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and flipped an estimated 2-3 times before coming to a rest inside of the salt pond. He along with the (2) other occupants, who identified themselves, exited the vehicle. All persons stated that they were in good health and did not wish to receive medical treatment at the time; however, the said vehicle was extensively damaged. The driver was instructed to report to the North Eleuthera Police Station on Sunday 27th October 2019 for further enquiries.

North Eleuthera High School - Celebrating Excellence On Friday, November 22nd, 2019, the North Eleuthera High School (NEHS) recognized their top academic students during the 2019 Summer Term at an awards ceremony held at the school, which began at 9:30am, under the theme, “One Team, No Limits”. Special guest speaker was Mrs. Kenisha Simms, of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, who encouraged the student body with a message of inspiration. Principal at NEHS, Mr. Kevin Hepburn, also brought remarks to the audience of students, teachers, and community members. During the awards presentation, seventeen (17) high school students at NEHS were recognized for achieving the Principal’s List (4) and Honour Roll (13) awards. A new team of prefects at the school and prefect leaders were also pinned during the morning ceremony. The local government junior councilor program, still active within the school, saw a new set of student councilors sworn in as well. Proud parents and other members of the North Eleuthera community were out in numbers, in support of the top performing honourees.

Many we’re excited and grateful for a new experience and thanked me for having the insight. This was by far not a money maker for Daddy Joes or GEMSS but more of my way to give back to the community. I wanted to dispel the myth that women can’t come together. More importantly, I wanted to expose women to some of the experiences that I have had with my various mentors. I am a big believer in mentorship and networking, as it has proven to be so rewarding for me.”

Two powerful guest speakers were invited to share their stories and experiences with the women gathered. The speakers, Duquesa Dean and Sharnette Kemp, who are both published authors, shared intimate details about their lives and, said Mrs. Johnson-Thompson, did an outstanding job leading the Sip and Chat. One of the guests stated she could have sat all night and listened, and many said they are looking forward to our second event scheduled for December 14th at 6:00pm, dubbed, ‘Girls Night Out, Pretty In Teal’: Ovarian Cancer Awareness and a Dream Board Soirée hosted by one of my mentors, Mrs. Keshelle Davis, CEO of The Training Authority.”

CEHS wins 2019 Eleuthera district debate competition The District High School debate series, which began in Eleuthera during the week of November 5th, was hosted at the Ministry of Education’s Resource Center in Savannah Sound.

Six High Schools were scheduled to compete in three separate debates, one after the other, on the same day - beginning with North Eleuthera High School (NEHS) versus Windermere High (WHS), followed by Central Eleuthera High School (CEHS) against Samuel Guy Pinder All Age (SGPAAS), then Preston Albury High (PAHS) versus Harbour Island All Age School (HIAAS). However, two of the schools were no-shows on the day; they were, Samuel Guy Pinder All Age, and Harbour Island All Age. As a result, two of the debate P44

Apprehension

Immigration Matters: On November 18th, (85) adult Males and (31) adult Females were expected to appear before a Deputy Chief Magistrate to face charges of Illegal Entry. The group was detected on November 12, 2019, by Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos (OPBAT) while on a routine patrol in waters on the southeastern end of Great Inagua. They were apprehended on November 13 and November 15 2019, by the joint effort of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), United States Coast Guard, and United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) along with a team of Immigration Officials on the island.

November 10th: A total

of 58 undocumented Haitian migrants arrived at the Defence Force base shortly after 2:30 pm on Saturday after they were apprehended on Friday November 8th. The migrants

(52 males, 6 females) were caught near Deadman’s Cay, Long Island aboard a 40-ft sloop during a joint effort by members of Royal Bahamas Defence and Police Forces and local fishermen.

Defence Force patrol craft HMBS CASCARILLA under the command of Senior Lieutenant Samantha Hart brought the migrants, who were turned over to Immigration Officials for further processing.

On Friday, November 22nd, 2019, Harbour Island All Age School (HIAAS) recognized their top performing students during the 2019 Summer Term at an awards ceremony held at the school, which began at 10am, under the theme, “The Future Is Ours”.

Special guest speaker was Prophetess Sharnette Kemp, who delivered a powerful message of being prepared for opportunities that would come for each student. She emphasized the importance of taking advantage of the time during their school lives to soak in as much of the guidance and information provided by their teachers, as well as the critical need to learn to manage their time in this current age of digital and other forms of distraction.

New Principal at HIASS, Mr. Ricardo Ferguson, also gave a charge to the student body. 52 high school students at HIAAS were recognized for achieving the Principal’s List (6), Honour Roll (23), and Rising Star (23) awards. The school grounds, where the ceremony was held, was filled to capacity with students, teachers, proud parents and other members of the Harbour Island community who had come out in support of the achieving students.

Community Policing at South Eleuthera School The K4 class at Wemyss Bight Primary School had a special visitor to their classroom on Friday afternoon, November 15th, 2019. Police W/Sgt. 232 Rodgers-Bethel spoke to the young class on the topic, “Community Helpers are our Friends.” In her presentation to the children, she highlighted the role of the police in the community and the importance of working along with them to help to have a better one.

The kids were said to be all bright eyed, attentive, and receptive about the idea of police being community helpers and friends within their communities.

The initiative was part of the South Eleuthera District’s team of police efforts to implement the component of the Commissioner of Police’s policing plan - ‘interacting with the youth within local communities’.

North Eleuthera High School, as the opposition, did face off with Windermere High School, as the proponent, on the moot: “Be it resolved that the traditional classroom model is more effective than a virtual classroom as a means of educating students today.” After presentations by each of the three-membered teams, and rebuttals, North Eleuthera High School was judged as the winning side, garnering 889 points. For the ultimate island winners, organizers at the district office took the decision to have the remaining two schools compete the following week, with the same panel of judges.

They determined that the winning team with the highest number of points from the two days of competition, would go on to represent the island in the national debate series. The panel of judges selected to determine the winning teams in this year’s district debates, made up of both former and

Edu c at i o n B eat current teachers and principals, included; Ms. Emily Petty (chief judge); Mrs. Levada Ingraham; Ms. Terrie Butler; and Ms. Rashida Murray (timekeeper).

On Tuesday, November 12th, the second debate took place, also at the Resource Center, between Central Eleuthera High School, as the opposition, and Preston Albury High School, as the proponent, of the moot: “Be it resolved that tourism has had a negative effect on the economic development of Family Island communities.” Central Eleuthera High School not only finished as the top debaters on the day, they also finished with the highest number of points, earning 1,045 in total to Preston Albury High’s 940 points.

Final overall points results placed CEHS in first with 1,045, PAHS in second with 940, and NEHS in third with 889. Best overall debate speaker was Equoia Gibson from the CEHS team - with 340 points, followed by Petra Kemp from the PAHS team - with 309 points.

The CEHS team would go on to represent the island of Eleuthera in the National Debate Competition, with the first round of national debates taking place during the final week in November.

CEHS Shares Career’s Day at Central Eleuthera High School in October 2019 saw students dress in the attire of their chosen career. During the day they were interviewed about their career choice and were also required to make a brief, 3 minute presentation about their career area. Students shown on right, represented a bright future of doctors, nurses, lawyers, teachers, contractors, fishermen, technicians and other professions. Ninety five percent (95%) of them, confirmed a teacher, were on the school’s honour roll.

Donations collected by the school’s administrators, from students throughout CEHS, in the form of toiletry care packages and food items were taken with them for the children at the Habitat. SCM students carried special snacks

for them as well.

The outreach initiative, an idea from one of the SCM teacher advisors, started at 10:30am with devotions led by the president of the SCM, Alia Albury, and vice president, Kiante Davis, under the theme, ‘The Blessing of Life’. SCM members, Ryesha Culmer, Maliha Cooper, Janae Cooper, Orlandria Pinder and Kenrece Collymore also assisted with songs and a scripture. After devotions everyone introduced themselves and shared something they enjoyed doing.

The children then took part in a number of varied activi-

ties together including; a Bible trivia, musical pie smash, musical chairs, volleyball rotation game, and a nature walk to the Habitat pond.

A Visit

Miss World Greeted Children at Amy Rogers Primary School in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco: GREEN TURTLE CAY, Abaco, The Bahamas -- Miss World 2018, Vanessa Ponce de Leon, paid a visit to storm-ravaged Abaco, November 13, 2019.

While in Abaco, she visited

Amy Rogers Primary School in Green Turtle Cay. Currently, 24 students are enrolled at the school. Miss World was accompanied by Miss World Bahamas, Nyah Bandelier.

This is the first time ever that a reigning Miss World has visited The Bahamas. Miss Ponce de Leon is pictured with Miss Bandelier, school and local officials during the visit, and with the children in their classroom.

Info: Immi Vanessa Ponce de Leon, at age 26 in December 2018 became the first Miss Mexico to be crowned Miss World, beating out 117 other contestants from around the world. The 2018 pageant was held in the Sanya City Arena in Sanya, China. At that time it was reported that she held a degree in International Business and had worked as a model and TV host. She was involved in charity work, and served on the board of directors of a rehab center for girls and volunteered for Migrantes en el Camino and was also a speaker for the National Youth Institute.

Region to tackle Roaming Rates Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ministers with responsibility for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have agreed to collectively approach the Region’s telecommunications providers to eliminate roaming charges throughout the Community. This is one of the priorities which they identified as an early benefit with respect to achieving a CARICOM Single ICT Space.

At a Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (ICT) on Friday, by video-conference, the Ministers agreed that this would provide social and economic benefits to the people and to the Region.

Chairman of the meeting, Dr the Rt Honourable Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada and Lead Head of Government for Science and Technology including ICT, said this was an issue which would give a real boost to regional integration and had the potential to drive growth and development in the Community.

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque concurred with the sentiments of the Prime Minister and stated that this should be viewed as a low-hanging fruit in achieving the Single ICT Space which should be realised as soon as practically possible.

The Single ICT Space will allow

for harmonisation of the ICT and other legislative frameworks in CARICOM, the removal of roaming charges, the encouragement of digital entrepreneurship, equipping all CARICOM nationals as digital citizens and looking at ICT financial solutions among other regional benefits. The Ministers emphasised the importance of cyber security in underpinning the Single ICT Space.

The Ministers agreed on a Ministerial Understanding on the Single ICT Space in which they identified priorities as: developing the ICT sector as a catalyst to foster closer regional economic integration; enhancing the competitiveness of the Region through a vibrant ICT industry; and using the Single ICT Space as a driver

of the CARICOM digital economy and the transformation of key sectors.

The Understanding notes that the realisation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) and the fulfilment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be greatly advanced by the strategic application and increased usage of ICT and applying a whole-ofgovernment approach.

The Ministers recognised the ICT Space could only be developed with partnership and commitment of all stakeholders in the public and private sectors, civil society and International Development Partners.

Miss World International - Bahamas 3rd runner up

a taste of Bahamian culture, as the ladies had a first hand experience of Junkanoo and a performance by a segment of the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Marching Band at the Summer Junkanoo Festival at Arawak Cay. The bevy of beauty queens didn’t mind having real fun, participating in lemonade drinking and pineapple eating contests. Kaniesha, the Bahamas’ contestant, along with the reigning queens, had the opportunity to be aired live by HOT 91.7FM, which she said was an awesome experience! The tourist queens took advantage of learning a number of Bahamian practices, such as costume pasting, straw plaiting, rake n’ scrape, sea-glass jewelry making and glass sculptures. It was an event, said Kaniesha, that was unique and memorable!

Beauty Queens in Paradise The Bluff, Eleuthera Represented Late Summer 2019, two days before the start of the Ms. World International Pageant, this U.S. organization confirmed its delegate, Ms. Kaniesha Minnis from Long Island, who resides in the Bluff, Eleuthera.

Automatically being appointed as Ms. Bahamas World International, the opportunity was a blessing, she said, and the mom of three rocked the competition on such short notice. Most competitors were title holders throughout the United States, along with delegates from Australia, Canada, Europe and Africa.

Ms. World International, explained Ms. Minnis, ac-

cepts all women, ages 26 and older, married or unmarried, with children or no children, with open arms. It focuses on women’s empowerment, providing unique opportunities for women to achieve their goals.

Beginning Thursday, August 8th, the fourteen contestants were accommodated at the All-Inclusive Breezes Resort, beginning with a scheduled orientation and the following day, a cocktail reception at the hotel’s Pelican Bar, where the contestants met and greeted the judges.

When asked how she felt, Ms. Minnis stated that she was simply shocked, that one of the final four spots had Ms. Bahamas World International’s name on it and to be crowned as 3rd runner-up, with little preparation, was an achievement of a lifetime!

Kaniesha Minnis is a past IJM Ms. Bahamas titleholder and the mother of Kaynia Minnis, last year’s IJM Miss Eleuthera Pre-Teen and presently the International Junior Miss Eastern Bahamas (Pre-Teen).
