APPAREL BUILT FOR BACKPACKING, NOT BSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ING. ON THE MOVE While active, Trailwear and Windwear should be used in concert and layered as needed to keep you comfortable in all but the worst weather. With high levels of airflow and moisture vapor transfer these layering pieces were designed to perform on the go.

IN THE RAIN Rainwear is a specialized protective layer that should be used only to keep you dry when it is raining. With complementary designs that are extremely light and packable, these garments offer full-length protection and venting where you need it most.

This is the only line in the outdoor industry purpose-built for backpacking and hiking. For years there have been two options: brands offering casual styles with faux functionality, or brands offering technical styles that look too extreme off the mountain.

RAINWEAR Think “umbrella” not “plastic bag.” Effective rainwear keeps out the rain, but no membrane breathes well enough to keep up with the rate at which your body creates heat and sweat during exertion. When rainwear is necessary, our designs look beyond the “breathability” of a membrane and offer unique physical venting for added comfort, and longer lengths for real protection.

Highlights: COMPLEMENTARY DESIGNS Hip length tops are designed to work with bottoms that feature breathable uppers. When paired together they offer the best in both protection and comfort. BACKPACK SPECIFIC VENTING Hip belt vents and armpit awnings on jackets offer ventilation to the major heat and moisture zones, even with a pack on. Hybrid rain pants and chaps offer breathable laps and lower backs while keeping your legs protected from the rain. BUILT FOR BACKPACKING Pack accessible pockets are always above a hip belt. Our sleeping bags were designed in response to monumental deficiencies in traditional backpacking bags. Old-fashioned mummy bags were designed to be thermally efficient, but the resulting product doesn’t know whether it wants to be a bed or a garment. As a result, they perform poorly in both

4-Season Versatility

WINTER When using on snow, an 11" pit can be dug and the telescoping center pole can be extended to provide more head room with greater interior volume. Snow flaps can be used inside or out to lock out spindrift.

TESTING EN13537 Testing EN13537 is a European standard for sleeping bag temperature ratings. Everyone sleeps differently; some people are very warm sleepers while others feel the cold easily. There are many factors that affect your warmth and comfort in a sleeping bag. Although the EN13537 standard does not identify a single precise temperature a tested sleeping bag is suitable for, it does provide an industry standardized temperature range that a typical user can refer to as a guide for the conditions their bag will be most comfortable in. The EN13537 standard provides three temperature levels to guide a consumer in their choice:

COMFORT: The temperature at which a

standard woman can expect to sleep comfortably in a relaxed position. If you consider yourself a cold sleeper use this rating to decide the coldest temperature the sleeping bag is suitable for.

a standard man can sleep for eight hours in a curled position without waking. If you consider yourself a warm sleeper you can use this rating to decide the coldest temperature the sleeping bag is suitable for.

EXTREME: This is a survival only rating for a standard woman. Between the lower limit and the extreme rating a strong sensation of cold has to be expected and there is a risk of health damage due to hypothermia. This is an extreme survival rating only, we do not recommend you rely on this rating for general use.

Fabric Performance Explained The ability of fabrics to keep you comfortable during activity is important. However, there are no magic fabrics that do it all. Sierra Designs selects fabrics that have the best blend of benefits for strenuous outdoor activities, such as backpacking. Depending on the garments end-use—aerobic activity to complete weather protection—we believe the important fabric performance attributes are:

Water Entry Pressure (WEP) Moisture Vapor Transmission (MVTR) Air Permeability Moisture Dispersion Total Moisture Absorption Dry Time

WEP Water Entry Pressure (WEP) is a measurement of the pressure that it takes to drive water through a fabric. WEP, measured in millimeters or psi, can help the customer determine if the fabric is water-resistant or waterproof. To the right, we’ve identified the WEP relative to real events, so that the customer can decide what level of protection is necessary.

MVTR Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR) is a measurement of the amount of water vapor that can be transmitted through a fabric in 24 hours. There are a wide variety of tests that differ in how they apply the heat, wind, humidity, and water. The tests are supposed to give the customer a gauge of the garment’s breathability, or how fast it will move sweat vapor from inside the garment to the outside. We use both ASTM E96 BW and JIS L 1099 B1 test methods.

Probably the biggest contributing factor to keeping you dry on the inside of a garment is Air Permeability, or how many cubic feet of air can pass through a fabric in 1 minute (measured in cubic feet per minute or CFM).
