CONTINUING HIS LATE WI FE'S LEGACY
"I met new friends in unexpected places. The chemo unit is not a dark abyss. It is a place where the stars shine bravely for each other. Doctors, nurses, admin staff, volunteers, patients, families and friends - all form a constellation of love, care and support."
- Paul Ma's late wife Alice Lai-Ma from her book of poems, A New Beginning, proceeds of which will benefit St. Michael's Hospital
St. Michael's Hospital is endlessly grateful to donors like Paul Ma who choose to leave a legacy through a planned gift. At a Legacy of Caring event this past June, Paul shared his personal reasons for giving back. In late 2012, after his wife Alice had been diagnosed with breast cancer, they approached her treatment together with the same hope and practicality that had guided them throughout their marriage. "Battling cancer is a mental game," Paul says. "Alice decided she would remain positive no matter what. I never wanted her to feel my worries." The pair's faith never wavered, and Alice wrote poetry to express her pain and uncertainty. In one poem, she asked, "Can I do something for others, to relieve their sufferings in their daily lives? Can I do more?"
STORIES TOLD BY YOU
Alice Lai-Ma passed away in March 2018. Today, Paul's voice spills over with pride as he tells how she tried to help others through her poetry. After losing his beloved wife Alice to cancer and knowing how much she appreciated the care she received here, Paul decided to do whatever he could to help St. Michael's Hospital continue to take on some of the toughest health-care challenges of our time. In addition to giving a legacy gift, he is publishing his late wife's poetry as a way to inspire others in their health-care journey. All proceeds from the sale of her book will benefit St. Michael's Hospital.
This past spring, we asked you to share how St. Michael's Hospital stopped at nothing for you. Here's one of the moving stories we received: "I underwent emergency surgery at St. Michael's for a perforated duodenum diverticuli, which led to more abdominal surgeries, many, many complications, and then cardiac arrest all within the two months I was a patient. What saved me? The doctors, the nurses, the technidans, the volunteers. St. Michael's saved my life and showed compassion and care toward myself and my family during a very terrifyi,ng time. Thank you!!!!" - Anonymous donor and grateful patient
