Experts’ Guide to Health How does one decide between getting a facelift vs. non-surgical treatments? While we offer many excellent skin rejuvenation and tightening treatments, the improvements are less dramatic than with facelift surgery. Your goals will help us determine your best options. For instance, for skin laxity and sagging, facelift surgery may be your optimal choice. during your consultation, both surgical and nonsurgical options will be presented to help you decide on the best way to achieve the outcome you desire. Who are ideal candidates for a facelift? Men and women alike are good candidates for facelift surgery if they are troubled by: • Sagging in the middle or lower part of the face • Deep creases below the lower eyelids or along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth • Formation of jowls, loose skin and/or fat under the chin (double chin) • General loss of a youthful appearance due to stress or other factors as with any surgical procedure, it’s a big plus when candidates are non-smokers and maintain good habits for nutrition and fitness.

dr. silberg will reposition the deeper tissues (sMas fascia) with permanent sutures beneath the skin and the excess skin will be removed. the tightened skin will be re-draped over the supporting structures. the skin itself is not asked to do all the lifting. this procedure eliminates jowls and sagging skin under the chin, and restores naturally youthful contour to the face and neck. dr. silberg does this procedure in his fully credentialed surgical suite. Is general anesthesia necessary for a facelift? general anesthesia should be reserved for situations when it is absolutely necessary because of the potential health risks. dr. silberg has done thousands of procedures under conscious sedation with a board certified anesthesiologist without a single adverse event. What is the recovery like? after your procedure, you will be taken into recovery and carefully monitored. Before you are released to be taken home by a friend or family member, you will be given specific instructions for aftercare and follow-up. After you have gone home, Dr. Silberg is available 24/7 to respond to any concerns should they arise. You should plan for restricted activity for approximately three weeks. during this period of time, swelling will decrease and your face will appear refreshed, and restored.

What is the difference between a mini lift and a full facelift? Mini lift: Patients who exhibit a mild degree of loose jowls and sagging skin are often good candidates for a mini-facelift. this is a less invasive technique that allows a cosmetic surgeon to tighten the skin through shorter incisions, typically located along the hairline above each ear and/or in the natural creases surrounding the ear. these procedures can look really good at first but, because the skin is very elastic, they do not last very long. Facelift: a standard or “traditional” facelift will more fully address moderate to advanced aging around the mid-face and neck. While the surgery is more extensive than those for a mini-facelift, and thus more recovery time is required, the results are more dramatic and are far longer lasting.

Dr. Marcus anD rebecca Porrino Dr. Marcus and Rebecca Porrino are licensed Naturopathic Doctors practicing general family medicine at their clinic in Sonoma since 2008. They received their doctorates from the National University of Naturopathic Medicine (NUNM) in Portland, Oregon, the country’s top Naturopathic medical school.

What is a Naturopathic Doctor? in california, Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are licensed as primary care providers, able to diagnose and treat illness; similar to an MD, who practices as a general practitioner or family practice doctor. NDs can order laboratory tests, imaging and utilize these tools, as well as an extensive history and physical exams, to diagnose and manage illness. NDs use a small formulary of medications when needed, but prefer less invasive methods first. Key Principles in the Naturopathic Approach: • Taking time with patients allows for better health care. • The body is capable of healing and self-regulating. Give it support to do so. • Doctor and patient are partners in the healing process. • All aspects of the patient’s life matter: diet, lifestyle, relationships, and spirit. • Natural medicine, from nature, is less invasive, therefore should be used first whenever possible. • Prevention is good medicine. What else do you do? • Well Baby and Child Care / Pediatric Care • School and Sports Physicals • Fertility and Hormone Support • Men’s Health (prostate and sexual health) • Women’s Health (annual exams, PAPs, gynecology, hPV alternatives, etc) • Adjunctive Cancer Treatment Support • Digestive Issues, Food Intolerance • And Much More! Will the doctors work with my primary care physician or refer to a specialist? Absolutely. We have good relationships with many of the physicians in Sonoma and Marin counties. We believe in a team approach. We will refer to a specialist when we feel it is necessary.

Obstetrics and GynecOlOGy Shazah Khawaja - MD, FACOG Shazah Khawaja, MD, FaCOG, is an obstetrician & gynecologist with ncMa Women’s Ob/Gyn center in santa rosa, california. dr. Khawaja is board certified and specializes in obstetrics, gynecology, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and uro-gynecological procedures. she is also certified in non-surgical, elective gynecological procedures, including Monalisa touch and Votiva.

I am pregnant. Is it okay that I have some cramping or bleeding? it is okay to have some cramping or stretching of the ligaments around the uterus. this stretching can cause cramping that in some patients can be more severe than others. it is always best to see your provider to make sure no other problems are occurring. However, if you are dealing with ligament pain, tylenol is often sufficient to relieve that discomfort.

Do midwives only treat pregnant women? no, actually. in our practice in santa rosa, each of our midwives holds master’s degrees in nursing. they are highly skilled at providing a range of thorough, individualized care to women and their families throughout their pregnancy, birth and post-partum periods.

bleeding, on the other hand, can be normal but an assessment by your obstetrician is important. sometimes bleeding can be due to placement of the placenta. at other times it can be completely normal after doing something strenuous or intercourse.

not all of our midwifery patients are pregnant or post-partum. in fact, approximately only 60 percent of our patients are pregnant. the other 40 percent of a typical midwife’s patients receive care for a variety of needs, including: annual exams, contraceptive consults, gynecological concerns, breast exams, cancer screening and menopause management.

What can I do to prevent leakage? Urinary incontinence is often categorized into two types: stress incontinence and urge incontinence. remedies for stress incontinence can include pelvic floor therapy (Kegel exercises), vaginal pessaries, Votiva radiofrequency treatment, and some minimally invasive surgeries.

Is there anything I can do to minimize pain during sex? depending on the cause of your pain, there are a number of ways to treat this common condition among perimenopausal and menopausal women. simple remedies include trying sensual activities like massage. take pain-relieving steps before sex: empty your bladder, take a warm bath, or take an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Urge incontinence treatment can be improved with bladder retraining, dietary modifications, medications and percutaneous tibial nerve stimuation (Ptns), a low-risk, non-surgical treatment. Ptns works by indirectly providing electrical stimulation to the nerves responsible for bladder and pelvic floor function.

after consulting with your gynecologist, you may learn that the reason you experience pain during sex is due to vaginal dryness. For some women, estrogen creams can be beneficial. newer non-invasive, non-surgical technologies, like Monalisa touch and Votiva, help restore your body’s organic response to sexual stimulation so that you can self-lubricate during sexual activity. Monalisa touch uses laser energy to help restore vaginal elasticity and lubrication to improve vaginal health. Votiva is an advanced form of treatment that utilizes heat and rF technology to provide relief from painful sex, especially for women after having a recent vaginal delivery. We perform both procedures in-office and neither require anesthesia.

Podiatry Ashleigh e. Korves, DPM, FAsPs dr. ashleigh Korves is a podiatric foot and ankle surgeon with NCMa Foot and ankle Center in Santa rosa. She prevents, diagnoses, treats and rehabilitates medical and surgical conditions of the foot and ankle.

What conditions can podiatrists treat? Podiatrists treat a variety of conditions related to the foot and ankle. our practice specializes in: · achilles tendinitis & ruptures · ankle and foot sprains · arthritis of the foot & ankle · Bunion deformities · Custom orthotics · Flatfoot deformities · Fractures · Hammertoe deformities · ingrown toenails · Neuromas · Plantar fasciitis (heel pain) · Sports & dance injuries · Warts · Wound care & limb salvage

usually covered by health insurance plans. However, not all podiatrists accept all insurance plans so always check with your provider first before beginning your care. Can a podiatrist perform surgery? yes! Podiatrists are doctors who attend four years of podiatric medical school training followed by at least three years of residency training. they receive their doctor of Podiatric Medicine (dPM) and are certified by the american Board of Foot and ankle Surgery, in Foot Surgery, with the ability to also certify in reconstructive Foot and ankle Surgery. their training is very similar to medical doctors (Md or do). dPMs focus on the foot and ankle much earlier in their training. Podiatrists can do surgery, treat acute injuries and broken bones, prescribe medications, admit patients to the hospital and order lab or imaging tests.

Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist? Patients do not need a referral to see a podiatrist, unless your insurance requires referrals to see a specialist. you may make an appointment directly with NCMa Foot and ankle Center in Santa rosa at any time: 707-575-6033. to learn more about our services and practice philosophy, visit us at www.ncmahealth.com. Do podiatrists take insurance? as a Northern California Medical associates practice, NCMa Foot and ankle Center accepts most commercial health plans and Medicare. in general, foot and ankle services provided by podiatrists are

REVERSE AGING & HEALTH RESTORATION Dr. Eliot A. CArtEr, DC, FiCPA BEth CArtEr, ChC, hhP CARTER WELLNESS CLINIC is passionate about the care they provide to the North Bay community in which they serve and live. From a holistic point of view, they see the patient as an individual not a list of symptoms and design regenerative heath programs for the individual to not only become symptom free but to be healthy. What is Reverse Aging? We see patients every day that have been told that the conditions they are experiencing are just part of normal aging. Whether degenerative joint disease, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, hormone dysfunction even wrinkled or crepey skin and more. For example, why is it that one knee needing replacement has “age appropriate” degeneration and the other is perfectly normal? Aren’t they the same age? At Carter Wellness Clinic we know that many degenerative conditions are reversable. We see the results of our work every day in the 1000s of patients we have treated. By removing the internal and/or external stressors on the body, we can restore the innate ability for the body to regenerate and heal itself. What is Health Restoration? Everything we do is health restoration. By determining the cause of one’s symptoms, we can address the dis-ease a patient is experiencing. We then can put together a treatment protocol using the most advanced techniques and cuttingedge technologies to remove that dis-ease and restore normal function. This technological advantage allows the team of Carter Wellness Clinic to unravel symptoms much like peeling away the layers of an onion to find root causes and subsequent relief. What Health Opportunities do you offer? Pain Cessation: Don’t just relieve pain. Stop it! Then, reverse the effects of degeneration. Weight Loss: We customize programs to meet the individual patient’s need for healthy fat loss.

About the Practitioners In practice since 1997, Dr. Carter strives for excellence in his field. By continuing to educate himself in the latest techniques and technologies he is able to help more patients in more ways than he thought possible 20 years ago. As a result, Dr. Carter has been honored multiple times by his community as best health practitioner in Sonoma as well as by Sonoma county doctors as one of the best in his field in Sonoma County. He currently serves as the Vice President of the California Chiropractic Assoc. North Bay district and is a member of countless other professional associations. Not long after being in practice, Dr. Carter became frustrated with the traditional medical model of only treating symptoms like getting a patient out of pain instead of treating the true cause of that pain and restoring normal function. Dr. Carter was led to much post-doctoral education and training and has become a specialist for some of the most advanced treatments for spinal and joint pain, weight loss and body sculpting. As a Certified Health Coach and Board-Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, Beth Carter has long sought after a natural response to health needs. Certification from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and additional certification from the Zyto Corporation have allowed her to push beyond her knowledge of dietary theory into the development of a Lifestyle Modification Program which tailors protocols and results based on individual background and expectation. Along with scientifically proven methods, Beth is able to guide patients to one common goal – their best health yet. Joining Carter Wellness Clinic has offered her the opportunity to blend her passion for education and natural health and has since become the inspiration of many in leading them to take responsibility for their own actions regarding their health.

Body Sculpting: Utilizing several different technologies, we customize a protocol to get you to your ideal body with zero pain and zero down time. Lifestyle Modification: We help patients fit their lifestyle into their health goals and health goals into their lifestyle.

ChIrOPraCTOr DR. KATHY O’CONNOR, DC Dr. Kathy O’Connor is a graduate of the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa and has been in practice for 24 years. Dr. O’Connor uses a combination of time tested techniques and cutting edge technology that focuses on structural correction of the spine. This results in longer lasting stabilization of the spine which contributes to overall healthier living.

What does a doctor of Chiropractic do? Chiropractic champions a natural method of healing advocating a non-surgical, noninvasive and drugless approach to the treatment of patients. Grounded in a view of the individual as an integrated being, the Doctor of Chiropractic focuses on spinal health and wellness as the keys to overall health and well-being. The human body is controlled by nerves. Everything (circulation, breathing, elimination, etc.) is under the direction of this unbelievably complicated system. If the impulses of this network are transmitted normally to and from the brain, the body will be healthy and able to ward off disease. Chiropractic adjustments relieve interference of these nerve impulses. How is Dr. Kathy O’Connor’s approach different to others in her profession? Dr. O’Connor utilizes a combination of hands on adjusting, as well as a computerized adjusting instrument that senses motion and the frequency (vibrations) of the vertebra. The instrument matches the frequency, essentially employing a biofeedback mechanism. This moves the vertebra much easier. The pressure can be adjusted to the patients tolerance. There is never any twisting of the spine. She also employs a Class IV K-Laser and Pulsed Electromagnetic Therapy when needed. The K-Laser is the latest and most effective modality for speeding healing of tissues biochemically. Pain and inflammation are quickly reduced. It was just FDa approved for Neuropathy resulting from Chemotherapy and Diabetes. It is 90% effective. The PEMF charges the cells, increasing oxygenation for optimum healing.

What are the benefits of on-going Chiropractic care? There are so many! When your spine is properly aligned, there will be less degeneration. Better sleep! We heal at night when we sleep and good sleep benefits all functions of the body. reduce Stress! When you don’t have pain in your body, your mood is better. Gain Confidence! The better your posture, the taller you stand and the more confidence you feel. Others will see you that way too! A few of the many customer testimonials: after being completely unable to walk due to pain and no better after a two day stay in the hospital, I went to Dr. Kathy O’Connor, on pain medication and a walker. She adjusted my back and my pain went from a 10+ to a 5. The following day I no longer needed my walker and a total of five days later I went back to work! hope is within Dr. Kathy O’Connor’s chiropractic office. her healing hands, heart and equipment really work. – Mark, Petaluma It was hard to believe that I could no longer walk. When two years earlier I had been exploring 10,000-foot high Sierra passes and pushing 20 miles down trail (with pack), I had become barely able to walk my dog two blocks at sea level. It was painful to stoop to garden. I hobbled up stairs. Simple exertions made me grunt like an old man. What was happening to me?!? The personable Dr. O’Connor (“Kathy”) got me up and - literally - running again. Fabulous. Even my untrained eye can see the changes on the radiographs. and the dog clearly thinks eight blocks is better than two. They say she’s the best in town; I agree. – Jeff, Petaluma My Whole life I have experience pain, sickness and even depression. Since my visits to Dr. O’Connor, I have never felt better. I didn’t know what it felt like to be pain free. Now I do. I wish I had done it years ago. It has been completely life changing and for the first time in my life I can honestly say I am happy. – Sierra, Petaluma
