Sources: Initial data was gathered from the Kentucky State Board of Accountancy CPA firm database. Information was also obtained from representatives of listed companies, firm websites, and the Kentucky Secretary of State's Business Services website (www.sos.ky.gov). List was restricted to accounting firms located in Lexington, Kentucky, that had at least four (4) licensed CPAs on staff in their Lexington office. Footnotes: 1=Number includes the total number of licensed CPAs located in each firm across all of its offices; number does not include administrative, marketing or other staff not directly working with clients. 2=Number includes government agencies and nonprofit organizations. * Crowe Horwath combined the total of auditing under accounting/financial reporting. A game changer By Erin Holaday Ziegler CONTRIBUTING WRITER

I

n economic times like these, it’s difficult to raise money for anything that promises business as usual, according to Lexington entrepreneur, developer and dreamer Phil Holoubek. A plan to double the space of Lexington’s Living Arts & Science Center (LASC) house in an antebellum mansion built by Abraham Lincoln’s attorney in 1847 on Martin Luther King Boulevard is anything but. “We’re changing the community,” said Holoubek, co-chair of the center’s Imagine This capital campaign along with his wife, Marnie Clay Holoubek, and honorary chair Gloria Singletary. “You’ve got world-class architecture in combination with incredible programming. This is a project that is going to move the needle.”

But while most employers do not face circumstances this challenging, the reality is that employers are presented with circumstances on a regular basis that must be investigated effectively to avoid significant legal liability.

Definition: Advanced Manufacturing - Advanced manufacturing enterprises employ new, enhanced and evolving technologies and knowledge-based processes, through a continuous improvement environment, to maximize human, intellectual, and financial capital to create globally competitive products. Definition provided by the Kentucky Manufacturing Association (KMA). Source: Kentucky Department of Economic Development – Advanced Manufacturing Facilities report – September 22, 2011. Researched Top officials in Central Kentucky pertaining to Advanced Manufacturing and Lean Systems, how these systems applied to our local manufacturers. Kentucky Manufacturing Association website, questionnaire sent to all listed manufacturers in Fayette County and the contiguous counties. Facilities with 100 or more employees were contacted and many responded by deadline and no response from others. Facilities web sites and company representatives supplied information. Footnotes: * OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer - has always meant the provider of the designed product. ** Tier 1 Supplier is a company that provides assemblies, parts, or services directly to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Tier 2 Supplier is a company that provides assemblies, parts, or services to a Tier 1 company. Tier 3 Supplier generally providing manufactured parts or raw materials. Sources: Information was gathered from Commerce Lexington’s Business directory, Google maps, Kentucky State HVAC Division, representatives from listed companies, company websites. List was restricted to HVAC/Mechanical companies in Lexington. Other companies may have been qualified but did not respond to multiple requests to obtain information or they declined to participate. Footnote: * In the event of a tie, companies were listed alphabetically. ** These companies have more services to offer that were not listed due to space restriction. Visit their websites for a complete list of services. Key: 1. Definition for HVAC and HVAC Service Technicians: HVAC stands for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning. An HVAC technician provides installation, maintenance and repair services for these three areas of climate control. Heating and cooling systems are very complex, with many different components. Specialized training is required for the HVAC tech to properly take care of any issues relating to these systems. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that technicians typically specialize in either installation or repair, although training programs cover both for a broad knowledge base.
