n the first decade of the 19th century, with a population of just over 4,300, Lexington was a thriving metropolis – Cincinnati’s population was about 2,500 at the time, and Louisville was “just a little trading post,” according to Foster Ockerman, president of the Lexington History Museum. It was during this period that burgeoning silversmith Asa Blanchard came to Lexington, Kentucky – the “Athens of the West” – from Virginia, looking for a piece of that prosperity pie. Blanchard placed an advertisement in the Kentucky Gazette in 1807, announcing the establishment of his Lexington business. He would go on to create silver teapots, sugar and cream pots, ladles, tumblers and other high-end entertaining items for more three decades, in a downtown Lexington shop located where Cheapside Bar & Grill is today. Blanchard – sometimes referred to as “the Paul Revere of the South” – saw great success over the course of his 30-year Lexington career, and his designs continue to be among the most highly collected of early American silversmiths. And today, thanks to the Lexingtonbased company Lexington Silver – founded two years ago by former Keeneland executive

Fran Taylor – Blanchard’s timeless designs are being reimagined and re-created for the first time in nearly 200 years. “I became aware of Asa Blanchard when I was a college student at Transy [Transylvania University] in the early 1970s,” Taylor said. “I never forgot his importance as a silversmith and always wondered why his most iconic designs had never been reproduced.” Among Blanchard’s iconic designs that are included in Lexington Silver’s “Asa Blanchard Collection” are a Julep cup, a pewter baby cup and a baby porringer (a small bowl with a reed handle) – but anchoring the line is Blanchard’s iconic “barrel beaker,” a small drinking glass shaped like a bourbon barrel, available in mirror-finished pewter or silver. According to Taylor, it was her abiding love for the Kentucky traditions of horses, hospitality and bourbon that attracted her to Blanchard’s designs – and specifically to the barrel beaker, the item that served as her initial inspiration for starting Lexington Silver. “The barrel beaker spoke to me on several different levels and kept speaking to me for more than 40 years,” Taylor said. “It is clever. I loved the fact that it is a drinking cup for distilled spirits that looks like the barrel in which those

spirits are aged – it is simple but has an underlying elegance that transcends centuries.” During Lexington Silver’s research and development phase, Taylor said she held her breath while applying for trademark protection for the barrel beaker, thinking that surely someone else had beat her to the punch. But she discovered that Blanchard’s barrel beaker hadn’t been reissued since his coin silver originals were made in the first half of the 19th century. “We now know why – it takes highly skilled craftsmen to produce the barrel shape by hand on a lathe,” she said, adding that it took the company many months of trial and error to get the proportions and weight just so. Whether it’s 1817 or 2017, hand-spinning metal and shaping it on a lathe requires an experienced master spinner, and the rounded sides of the handle-less barrel-shaped beaker make it even more difficult to produce than many metal cups. Though Lexington Silver is a Kentucky-based company, its products are made in New England, which is home to Taylor’s business partner, longtime metalsmith Guy Hurley, as well as a preponderance of metal-spinning master craftsmen. The company’s pewter products are spun in Connecticut; its silver items are

produced in Massachusetts; and its decorative embellishments are cast (poured in a mold and applied) in Rhode Island. Engraving, by machine or hand, is done at Lextro in Lexington, making every step of manufacturing a domestic process. After a year of development (2015) followed by a year of online sales, Lexington Silver expanded its reach in 2017, adding wholesale operations and new items, including a new line of products: the Stirrup Cup Collection. Traditionally given to guests as they were departing on horse – their feet in stirrups – stirrup cups today often feature highly ornamental bases and are intended to be stored upside down when not being used for drinking. The bases of the cups in Lexington Silver’s Stirrup Cup Collection feature detailed engravings fashioned in the shape of various animal heads, including wildcats, horses, dogs, bears, rams and deer.

The company’s products are now available in 20 retail outlets in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky; locally, Lexington Silver products can be found at LV Harkness, Thoroughbred Antique Gallery and the Keeneland gift shop. Most of the company’s efforts are currently focused on its growing online business (www. lexingtonsilver.com). At the heart of Lexington Silver’s mission is to keep with Blanch-ard’s reputation for fine craftsmanship’s well as his character – in his heyday, he was a trustee of what would now be a chamber of commerce, as well as the local fire department, Taylor said, and was often asked by the courts to be an executor of estates.

Nardiello is not just talking about the mix of vintage and new men’s apparel displayed on racks and shelves; he’s also talking about the antique sofas, rugs and decor, not to mention a kaleidoscope of delightful oddities and treasures creatively staged throughout the store. Worn & Company offers local men (and the women who shop for them) a unique place to not only shop for stylish duds but to also just hang out and treasure hunt. It’s all for sale at Worn & Company. “We try to have the shop changing constantly,” says Nardiello, as he picks up an EKU freshman cap from 1952. He added that he spends a lot of time at yard sales and estate sales looking for unique items. The store is not just full of quirky treasures; it also offers a selection of American-made apparel by brands like Imogene + Willie, Raleigh Denim, Howler Brothers, Velva Sheen, Wrangler, Levi’s and Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. A display of new jeans is flanked by a display case of shot glasses, next to the original Churchill Downs sign of 1964 Derby winner Northern Dancer. “It’s definitely been a learning process trying to create something different and figuring out what Lexington was missing,” says Nardiello, 30, who – much like his store – has an eclectic background, spanning the arts, retail and equine industries. “I think we have a lot of gentlemen’s stores, but this is almost for gents who are maybe a little bit younger [who are] not wearing a suit every day,” says Nardiello. “I have a lot of law students, kids in med school, folks in the equine industry that get a chance to dress up or dress down. A lot of people these days want to be individual.”

What better way to show one’s originality than with a custom hat or leather accessory? The shop has its own leather artist who makes custom items like belts and bags and repairs old hats as well. “We’ve been having fun redoing old hats,” Nardiello says as he shows off the work he’s doing on a friend’s grandfather’s hat.

Nardiello also sells new Stetson Hats and Bailey Hats. The price range for items varies, with most pieces in the store costing between $30 and $280. Nardiello says they have stayed busy since opening, getting the word out via community events.

“We have fun,” says Nardiello. “We do little pop-up events at places like Woodland Art.” More fun is around the corner in November, when Nardiello will host a large, in-store event to launch the holiday giftgiving season. The store will hold a Holiday Wish List party on Nov. 11, with door prizes, including a drawing for a pair of UK basketball tickets. Setting Up Shop at Spindletop The University of Kentucky clubhouse prepares for its inaugural holiday craft market: a rare opportunity for the public to step inside the historic venue

t’s a busy season for the University of Kentucky’s Club at Spindletop Hall.

On the tail of a big gala in late October celebrating 80 years since the sprawling mansion was completed, the venue will open to the public for a rare occasion this month when the club presents the Spindletop Holiday Open House Craft Show. Taking place the Saturday after Thanksgiving – a day often referred to in the retail world as “Small Business Saturday” – the inaugural holiday market will feature 40 local and regional craft vendors selling everything from jewelry, textiles and photography to note cards, paintings and woodworking. According to event organizers Donna Nabor and Gerald Marvel, the craft fair will offer the perfect opportunity for members and non-members alike to experience the unique venue, which made the American Institute of Architects’ list of “25 Must-See Buildings in Kentucky” earlier this year. Despite Spindletop’s long-running tradition of hospitality – the university-affiliated club has provided members with a charming, historic venue for dining, swimming and other social activities since 1962 – it’s rare that the venue opens its doors to the public. “There have been fundraisers and other events here before, but there aren’t regular opportunities for folks to get to see it – especially when we’re all decked out for the holidays,” said Marvel, Spindletop’s general manager. A 45,000-square-foot Georgian Revival mansion nestled on 800-plus acres north Lexington farmland, Spindletop was built in 1935-37 as the homestead of Mildred “Pansy” Yount, the recent widow to Texas oilman Miles Frank Yount. Pansy Yount’s love of American Saddlebred horses spurred her move to the Commonwealth, where she oversaw the construction of her grand Kentucky mansion. With 40 rooms, 14 bathrooms, 11 fireplaces, more than 130 doors and a variety of architectural influences, the home was considered quite modern when it was built: The basement featured a dance floor designed to mimic an outdoor courtyard, and the main floor’s grand circular twin-staircase and 30-by-60-foot living room were both said to be the largest in Kentucky at the time. The mansion was furnished with imported furniture from Europe and Asia, much of which remains in the home today.

Two decades – and two husbands – later, Yount eventually found herself ready to move back to Texas, and in 1955, following the marriage of her daughter Mildred, she did just that. Unsure what to do with her beloved homestead, Yount consulted with her close (and well-connected) friend Fred Wachs, the publisher of the Herald-Leader at the time. Wachs suggested Yount donate it to the University of Kentucky and connected her with his friend, university president Frank Dickey, who flew to Texas to negotiate the sale of the estate: a “gift” at the price of $850,000, payable over 10 years. While membership eligibility is generally tied to the university in some way, it’s easier to attain than many are aware, said Marvel. Interested members who lack official university ties can join UK’s alumni association for less than $50 a year, making them thus eligible for Spindletop membership, which is available in a variety of packages and price points. “We like to say we have memberships for every stage of life – everything from the recent graduate to the young family to the empty nester to the senior stage in life,” Marvel said.

Kentucky’s most popular literary event relocates to Lexington

A

fter 35 years in Frankfort, one of the most popular events among Kentucky wordsmiths and bibliophiles will debut in Lexington this month.

Since 1981, the annual Kentucky Book Fair has helped sanction the Commonwealth’s status as a “hub for readers, writers, authors and thousands of people who still cherish the written word,” said event organizer Bill Goodman, executive director of Kentucky Humanities, the non-profit organization that took over management of the event in 2015. (The fair had previously been run by an all-volunteer board.) The event’s move from the capital city was precipitated by Frankfort’s upcoming downtown redevelopment project, which includes the demolition of the Frankfort Convention Center – Frankfort’s largest event space and home to the event since 2001. With 184 authors slated for appearance and an expected attendance of over 4,000, the book fair could not fit in any other Frankfort facility.

“We debated venues in Louisville and Lexington, but it didn’t take long for us to make the choice to bring the fair to Lexington,” said Brooke Raby, project manager for Kentucky Humanities. “The literary community in Lexington expressed strong interest in hosting the fair, and they’ve been incredibly supportive.” Initiated in 1981, the event was the brainchild of Pulitzer Prizenominated journalist Carl West, editor at the time of The State Journal in Frankfort. The fair was modeled after a similar event held by the National Press Club in Washington D.C., where West had worked as a Scripps Howard News Service journalist covering the Pentagon and the White House before coming to Kentucky. The beloved journalist and event founder passed away last year. “This is one of the oldest events of its kind in America, and it’s come a long way,” said Raby. “Carl was a remarkable person, and he thought that a celebration of reading, writing and books would be well-received in a state with a deep literary tradition.” As it turns out, he was right. Where the first Kentucky Book Fair featured 40 authors and a few hundred attendees, the annual event has grown steadily over the past three decades into a highly anticipated and favorite annual event among Kentucky writers and readers. According to Frank X Walker, founding member of the Affrilachian Poets and a regular participant of the Kentucky Book Fair, the event offers “a rare chance to see the state’s literary community all in one place.”

“Kentucky has a rich literary history and active community of writers,” Walker said. “I believe it’s reflective of how important stories, storytelling, and reading and writing have become, and this community of writers is an example of Kentucky’s rich literary legacy.”

The event, which has featured Kentucky authors Wendell Berry, Ed McClanahan, Barbara Kingsolver, James Still, Sue Grafton and Silas House among many others, is “a special bonus” for Kentucky writers, Walker added, “because we get to spend a whole day with many of our favorite authors.” In addition to choosing among the dozens of scheduled main stage author discussions and breakout sessions, this year’s attendees will have the chance to meet the participating authors and purchase their books directly from them. While the event largely seeks to spotlight authors with Kentucky ties, it also welcomes a handful of national authors each year, with past visiting authors having included former PBS news anchor Jim Lehrer, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and historian David Halberstam and politician George McGovern. The fair has also hosted sports personality Mickey Mantle, television writer Andy Rooney and counterculture icon Ken Kesey. This year’s headliners include bestselling feminist and mystery writer Rita Mae Brown, best known for her 1973 novel “Rubyfruit Jungle”; Jamie Ford, author of the 2009 novel “Hotel on the Corner of Butter and Sweet”; renowned Kentucky author and activist bell hooks; best-selling, Louisville-based mystery and romance author Karen Robards, and many more.

An Exceptional Birthday Party

E

BY HARRIETT ROSE arlier this month, I received an invitation to a 20th birthday party from the Chevy Chaser Magazine – or perhaps from its parent, Smiley Pete Publishing. Regretfully, I put it aside as I do most invitations these days. I no longer drive and I need an escort for even familiar places. This was not a familiar place. But having written a monthly column for the Chevy Chaser for 18 of its 20 years, I knew I belonged at this party! As it happens, my cousin Connie Miller, member of a journalism society, had also been invited. She asked me if I had accepted; I said no because I had no companion. She – lovely girl that she is – said, “I’ll take you and we’ll have fun!” And so she did – and so we did! Many people knew Connie, and some knew me, so we stayed until the party ended. The venue for the party was the newly created party room that was formerly Sal’s Restaurant in Lansdowne Shopping Center. I guarantee I was older than the oldest guest “... having written there by 25 years, and it was a stand-up place – a a monthly column bar mostly, with a buffet for the Chevy with cocktail party food. Chaser for 18 There were round tall of its 20 years, tables for four, or friendly sixes, and tall bar stools I knew I belonged – I made it onto the first at this party!” one of those by putting one cheek of my behind up and then the other, and I stayed put for a while. Then we moved onto the more populous section, where the food and drink were located, and a tall muscular gentleman lifted me up on the chair. Perhaps I should mention that I am 97 years old – I am 4-foot10, and I weigh 117 pounds! The elegant room was designed for younger, taller, more agile guests, but I had a lovely time nevertheless – with a little help from some friends. Chuck and Chris, our hosts, and my editor Saraya and I congratulated each other, expressing our wishes for a few more successful issues! It was a lovely evening! cc

hen Melinda “Min” Johnson made her first foray into Lexington’s entrepreneurial community – debuting her line of homemade, organic cosmetics at the NoLi CDC Night Market in December 2015 – little did she know that less than a year later, she and her partner, Brandon Rexach, would be the owners of their own North Limestone brick-and-mortar business. After seeking a space to house Johnson’s burgeoning homemade cosmetics business, the couple opened Granola Culture in 2016, evolving their original concept into a fullblown community wellness and yoga studio.

“We had so much open space that we decided to just make it into a sacred space and offer yoga here,” said Rexach of the 1,500-square-foot North Limestone space, which was the former office of local creative agency Bullhorn. “There was no yoga on this side of town.” This year, the couple, who are in their mid-20s, is celebrating another milestone for their business: the August opening of FIKA Vegan Cantina, Lexington’s only all-vegan eatery.

Named after a Swedish cultural concept that means “to stop for a moment to enjoy life with good food, good beer and good friends,” FIKA serves lunch and dinner (and beer!) Tuesday through Saturday, as well as Sunday brunch. According to Johnson and Rexach, the eatery was a natural extension of their wellness-oriented business. “Granola Culture is an umbrella,” Johnson explained. “We want to have the service side with yoga and products – but not just cosmetics: a completely holistic place you can trust.” Stepping foot inside FIKA and Granola Culture is a bit like getting off a plane and stepping onto a small Caribbean island: Upbeat but relaxing music plays throughout the space, which is decorated in neutral colors with pops of sky and ocean blue. The tranquil island vibe is enhanced by tropical plants, hardwood accents and ambient lighting. For the young couple, the Caribbean aesthetic is not incidental. “My heart and soul are in the Caribbean,” Johnson said. “My mother and father met in St. Thomas, and Brandon is fullblooded Puerto Rican.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, when Rexach and Johnson expanded their holistic business to include the eatery this year, they opted for a menu centering on innovative vegan fare with a Caribbean flare. All of the menu’s items – which include jackfruit carnitas, a “Zen burrito” and guacamole with plantain chips – are made in-house, with organic (and local, when possible) ingredients. But there’s one item common among vegan recipes that you won’t find on FIKA’s menu. “Nothing is soy-based,” said Rexach. “The vegan market is saturated with soy,” Johnson continued. “Everywhere you go, if you eat vegan, it had some sort of tofu in it, which is soy-based. There isn’t a lot of nutritional value [in soy], so we try to stay away from that as much as possible.” “A lot of places that try to do this are lacking in flavor or nutrients, so we’re trying to hit all of those points,” Rexach said. While Johnson’s recipes have long been a big hit among her friends and family, FIKA is her introduction to cooking for the public.

“I’ve always loved to cook,” Johnson explained. “The only reason we didn’t start with food was because my [professional experience] is in cosmetics.” Having previously worked for Benefit Cosmetics, Johnson’s interest in moving toward organic, homemade products started when she found out she was expecting her first child. Her familiarity with Benefit’s facilities equipped her with the know-how she needed to create products on her own. Her cosmetics line includes lip conditioner, lip and cheek tint and a variety of skin creams, all handcrafted with natural ingredients and available to purchase at Granola Culture’s storefront (or online at www.granolaculture.com). Johnson and Rexach have worked hard to develop a community within their business, which they dub “Lexington’s Urban Oasis” and which they describe as an extension of home. Yoga classes often include a complimentary beverage, from kombucha to wine to hot tea – something the owners hope will continue to

attract people who wouldn’t normally do yoga. Likewise, they work hard to make FIKA’s allvegan menu appeal to vegans and non-vegans alike. While items will be based on the season, the proprietors plan to stick with a Caribbean theme year-round – and eventually, would like to end up in the Caribbean themselves. “I have my destination in mind, but I won’t tell anyone,” said Johnson with a smile. “It’s my secret spot until I get it.” cc

Approaching the holiday entertaining season, it’s increasingly important to be cognizant of special dietary restrictions of the friends and family with whom we’ll be sharing home-cooked meals in the coming weeks and months. With November being “World Vegan Month,” we thought it would be a good time to highlight a classic and mouthwatering holiday recipe that’s popular with vegans and non-vegans alike. This recipe is one that Melinda “Min” Johnson – owner of FIKA Cantina, Lexington’s first and only all-vegan eatery – pulls out every holiday season, and one that she says “hits every time.” 44

Note: The cranberry sauce makes a great topping for traditional turkey or “meatless” turkey, or mashed potatoes. Visit this article online for Johnson’s recipe for vegan “buttermilk” mashed potatoes.

Ingredients: • 2 packages fresh cranberries • 2 1/2 cups coconut sugar (or sugar of your preference: brown, raw, white cane) • 1 orange • 1/3 cup brandy or orange liqueur

Method: Rinse the fresh cranberries and place inside a jelly pan or rimmed baking sheet. Pour sugar over cranberries. Cover with foil and bake at 400 degrees for 30-35 minutes, until cranberries burst. While cranberries are cooking, zest one orange and place zest aside. Using the same orange, slice in half and juice. Upon taking cranberries out from the oven, add brandy or orange liqueur, orange zest and juice. Garnish with thin orange slices (for aesthetic). May be served warm or chilled. (This dish can also be frozen, though it will lose potency and upon thawing will require more brandy.) cc

CHEVY CHASER’S DRINK OF THE MONTH

This coffee-based cocktail, served at recently opened downtown coffee bar Lussi Brown, gives new meaning to the phrase “strong coffee.” Chill a pot of coffee overnight to make a round of this beverage, which also features freshly pulled espresso. Subtle, orange bitters are the star of this drink, which also pulls in bourbon notes, including clove and cinnamon. While the cocktail has the mouthfeel of stout beer, it drinks like a good cup of coffee. Recipe makes one stellar cocktail. Cheers! Ingredients: • 6 ounces cold brew • 2 ounces espresso (double shot, freshly pulled) • 1 1/2 ounces bourbon • 1/2 ounces honey • 3 dashes orange bitters • Slice of orange

Method: To a cocktail shaker, add bourbon, honey, orange bitters, 4 ounces of cold brew and a double espresso shot. Add a scoop of ice and shake well. Strain mixture into a 12-ounce glass over ice and top with remaining cold brew. Garnish with orange slice or peel. cc

“I was skeptical at first...” Dear Friends, “I remember walking down the warehouse block party 2 summers ago, looking at all the booths and tents displayed on National avenue while listening to great music. Most of the booths had food, clothes and little gifts on display, half way down the row a particular booth caught my eye. The booth had a spinal anatomy model on display, two scales and the words Cornerstone Chiropractic Wellness. I got curious and decided to stop by the booth to figure out what was going on. I knew very little about chiropractors or what chiropractic wellness meant, it was very relieving to be welcomed to the booth by a friendly face and a huge smile from Dr. Twit. I started out by saying hello and asking him about his booth and display. He went on to explain that he was a chiropractor and immediately at the back of my mind I thought oh this is not for me, I’m not old or injured so I don’t need chiropractic care, boy was I wrong. Dr. Twit explained that a well aligned spine is essential to the overall function and wellness of the human body, that piqued my interest and I signed up for a consultation. I was a little intimidated going in for my consultation because I knew very little about chiropractors and chiropractic care. As my consultation started, Dr. Twit took his time to explain to me what chiropractors do, how the alignment of the spine affects our organs and body function and how with consistent adjustments our bodies can function way better than we expect. The fascinat-

ing part was when he mentioned that chiropractic care was safe enough for babies. I was sold and ready to try this out, maybe just maybe the pain in my neck and shoulders will get better. With each adjustment I got, I began to believe in the effectiveness of chiropractic care. I felt better and left more educated about my body and my overall wellness. I had gotten used to the pain in my shoulders and my neck and thought it was normal to have the pain. With consistent adjustments, I began to notice that the pain was becoming very minimal and I became more in tune with my body. The first significant change I noticed in my overall wellness was that I did not have my usual fall allergies after starting chiropractic care, I found this very interesting because I did not realize the connection between a properly aligned spine and a strong immunity.

After 3 months of getting adjusted, I had no pain in my shoulders and neck. Six months down the road, I realized that the painful cramps I used to get during my period had disappeared. This change made me a firm believer in the effectiveness of chiropractic care. I talked to Dr. Twit about all the improvements and changes in my body function, he explained that by having my spine properly aligned I was helping my organs function to the best of their ability. By fixing subluxation, I was reducing the pressure placed on my nerves which in turn was allowing my body function like it is meant to. He gave the analogy of a water hose being able to flow freely and give out water but, the moment you place your foot on the hose it stops the free flow of water and after all the water drains out of it, the hose cannot give out water. This is what happens when our spines are not properly aligned, we stop the free flow of signals to our body via our nerves which affects how our bodies function. Ultimately I came to realize that with regular adjustments, staying active and eating properly my body could function to the best of its ability. Starting chiropractic care was like finding the missing piece in the puzzle of my overall wellness. With the pain in my shoulders and neck gone, no cramps, a faster metabolism, stronger immunity and overall better functioning body, I strongly believe that everyone can benefit from chiropractic care, give it a try and see what difference it makes in how your body functions.”
