Corey Maple, who purchased the building in January, said Wilson’s will have an updated look but otherwise will retain all the offerings that neighbors have valued for more than two decades: quality meats at a time-honored meat counter, grocery staples, breakfast and lunch counter service. New features will include a more open layout with additional natural light, a walk-up breakfast window for pastries and coffee, but owners plan to otherwise stay true to the Wilson’s traditions – even the $1.99 bologna sandwich lunch special. “This place has stood the test of time,” said Maple, who owns a home nearby (featured in a home profile in this issue, page 29). “We wanted to preserve that – we didn’t want it to fall into the wrong hands.”

Major gift announced for new downtown public amphitheater The local organizaiton Lexington Picnic with the Pops announced that it will donate $1.2 million toward the construction of a new downtown amphitheater, to be built as part of the Town Branch Park project adjacent to Rupp Arena and the Lexington Center. Funding a permanent outdoor amphitheater that could host a variety of community events – including Picnic with the Pops’ own annual two-night signature event, which takes place each August at Keeneland – has long been a part of the organization’s mission. Town Branch Park will be part of Town Branch Commons, which will link the city’s two main trails, Town Branch Trail and the Legacy Trail. When completed in 2022, the project will provide Lexington 22 miles of uninterrupted bike and pedestrian paths, connecting downtown to the rural outskirts.

Fall in love with new styles

The park will contain green space, water features, a dog park and a “Great Lawn” area that will be anchored by the outdoor performance amphitheater, which will feature space to host up to 5,000 patrons.

Where to Eat Now 26 NEW (OR COMING SOON) SPOTS TO EAT & DRINK

Lexington’s culinary landscape is constantly shifting and evolving, and it can be dizzying to keep up with. While there’s no shortage of great local spots to eat or drink, when trying to figure out where the heck to eat, it can be easy for our minds to draw a complete blank. Luckily, food and drink are important to your friends at Smiley Pete, and we try to do our part to help answer the age old question: “Where to eat now?” by publishing a guide to the newest culinary destinations once or twice a year. On the following pages we’ve highlighted more than two dozen bars and restaurants that have opened in the past six months or so, or are coming soon. Check them out — and drop us a note to let us know how you like them!

Owners of the Paris, Kentucky-based brewery Rooster Brewing and local food truck Gastro Gnomes joined forces to open Oscar Diggs on North Limestone in January.

For one of Kentucky’s largest variety of beers, feast your eyes on the immense, open-concept bar and game center. KSBar & Grille and Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery 1030 S. Broadway The team behind Kentucky Sports Radio have teamed up with a handful of partners to open a new dual-restaurant concept in the former location of Saddle Ridge/The District Sport & Tap – and you better believe it includes a souped-up sports bar. With the goal of opening by the end of August, KSBar & Grille – a high-end sports bar concept – will occupy the righthand side of the building, while Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery, a Tennessee-based franchise featuring a festive atmosphere with servers scantily clad in Irish garb, is expected to open by October on the left side of the building. Both will include food, drinks and a bevy of sports-centric TVs.

Napa Prime Burgers & Seafood 319 Cedar St. | www.napaburgerbar.com Originating in Versailles, Kentucky, this franchise is slated to open its second location soon, in the Lexington building that formerly housed JDI Grill (Jefferson Davis Inn), and more recently, Alexander Bullitt’s. With meals primarily priced at $20 and under, Napa Prime’s menu centers on steak and seafood dishes, small plates and a handful of handcrafted burger options, featuring toppings that range from peanut butter to lump crab to bourbon jam. Also featuring a food truck and catering for private events, the restaurant announced in July that it would be opening its Lexington location in fall of 2018.

An ensemble of purveyors from County Club and/or Bar Ona are preparing to open a new concept this fall, in the downtown storefront most recently occupied by Limestone Blue. The menu will focus on wood-fired Neapolitan style pizza, fresh shellfish and salads by executive chef Johnny Shipley (County Club), and the bar will feature an all-organic, natural and biodynamic wine list and a creatively classic cocktail menu. A newly remodeled storefront is in progress with design by Chesney Turner and Hunter Guyon (County Club and Bar Ona), who are partners in the venture alongside Shipley, Colleen Mahan, Case Mahan and Coleman Guyon. The snug and pleasant interior will seat a small crowd of 40 people.

This American restaurant with a Southwest flair is slated to open sometime this month. Though specializing in craft beers, the franchise also boasts a full bar with craft cocktails and martinis and an extensive wine list. The family-friendly eatery owned locally by husband-and-wife duo Eric and Lori Rossi will serve everything from small plates to full entrees. According to the owners, Sedona sources the best ingredients like choice Braveheart beef, organic greens, fresh fish and more. They will also have several gluten-free options.

AMBRAbev, a mashup of American Brazilian Beverage, was founded by Zachary Baeker in 2015 to import Brazilian spirits like cachaça and vodka. The company has built a 10,000-square-foot facility to bottle, warehouse and proof the AMBRAbev brands, including a cane-based Brazilian gin that will be hitting the market within six to 12 months. By late August, part of the building is expected to open as The Still at AMBRAbev: a tavern-esque culinary experience with a restaurant, full-service bar, 2,000-square-foot patio and gift shop with a women’s clothing boutique. Under the direction of culinary director Mary Robin Spoonamore, who opened Jane Barleycorn’s Market & Bar in downtown Danville in 2010, the menu will focus on affordable dishes inspired by the United States, Brazil and beyond. cc

hen Marianna McDonald looks at colors, she sees more colors inside those colors. “Like those trees,” she says, pointing to the green foliage in her backyard. “I might see yellow in them or some other colors.” Looking around at the large-scale oils and pastels in McDonald’s cozy southside home studio or her studio at Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill, it’s easy to see what she’s talking about. Sweeping natural scenes are deepened by her eye for layers and color. When I met her in her home studio in Lexington, she was at work on a large pastel landscape commissioned by Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Her soothing pastel landscapes are a hit on the hospital circuit and are displayed at numerous hospitals in the region, including St. Joseph, UK HealthCare and Owensboro Health Regional, to name a few. She’s also a hit on the fair circuit, showing and selling her work at regional and national art fairs – including Lexington’s Woodland

Art Fair, where her work has won the “Best of Drawing” award more than five times, and where she will display her work this month when the popular fair returns on Aug. 18-19. McDonald cites the fair’s early days as helping jumpstart her current full-time art profession. “I started with art fairs with the Lexington Art League back in the ’80s, before they ever did a juried show,” she explained. “We didn’t even have tents then – when it rained, you just got under a great-big piece of plastic. “I remember sitting there one weekend where it rained all weekend, and we sat there in our little lawn chairs underneath our big pieces of plastic,” she said. At the time, the pastel artist enjoyed participating in local art fairs, but her art took a back seat in 1988 when she “had to get a real job.” “In 1988, I started working at the newspaper in the promotion department,” says McDonald. “When I was there, occasionally I’d do an

art fair, but sometimes it was just too much with my job and kids.” Then, in 2001, McDonald was caught in a wave of downsizing at the Lexington Herald-Leader. McDonald saw an opportunity. “I thought ‘yeah, I’ll take your buyout’ – and then I started doing the art fairs real seriously,” says McDonald. And that was the beginning of McDonald’s full-time art career. She began doing 12-15 art fairs a year and also became represented at local and regional galleries. These days, she has scaled down to about five per year, in large part thanks to her gig at Shaker Village as a resident artist. As part of the program, which she was invited to join in 2014, McDonald shares a studio rent-free with another artist; they give 30 percent of their sales to Shaker Village in lieu of rent. McDonald, whose love of nature is evident in her life and work, could not be happier with this arrangement.

McDonald’s studio is located in the East Sister Shop at Shaker Village.

“When I asked my husband what he thought of it – that it would be about a 30-minute drive a couple days a week – he said, ‘you’re already down there all the time, anyway,’” she said. With Shaker craftsmanship having long influenced notable poets, artists, designers and architects, the artist-inresidence program helps provide a setting and space that fosters and inspires contemporary artists. “I’d sat right in front of the building and sketched there before, so I knew what those windows were like,” McDonald said of the studio, which is located in the East Family Sister Shop on the east side of the village. The large windows shepherd loads of natural light into the studio. McDonald tries to be in her studio a couple days a week, usually between Thursday and Sundays, and spends countless additional hours walking the grounds and sketching. CRAVE COUPLE SPOTLIGHT:

Erik Carlsen-Landy & Anansa Thompson reflect on the evolution of their relationship and the role that their favorite local festival has played in that STORY BY SARAYA BREWER AND JUDY BRUMLEY PHOTO BY JUDY BRUMLEY

Due to holiday travels and Erik spending the summer in Boston for an internship, many of the couple’s first eight months of dating were long distance, but after Erik returned from Boston, the couple made big plans to attend a new local event, Crave Lexington Food & Music Festival. The second annual festival, which neither had attended before, was to be one of their first big outings together after spending most of the summer apart. “After his trip, [Erik] was starting to feel bored with Lexington, and I really was, too,” Anansa said. “I heard about Crave randomly on the radio, and it definitely sounded like something he and I would be into.” Intent on making the most of the festival experience for himself and his new girlfriend, Erik insisted they order the Bacchanal Package: a high-roller package that cost several hundred dollars per person and offered patrons a pass for “all you can eat and drink.”

“A lot of Crave’s importance is that it was the first thing we really did together – it kind of set the tone for what our relationship was going to be,” Erik said. “We look forward to reliving it every year.” When Erik saw that the festival had stopped offering the Bacchanal package after 2014’s event, he contacted organizers directly and asked if they would create a special package for the couple, so he and Anansa could relive their “all you can eat and drink” adventures at the festival. Each year, the couple touches base with festival organizers, who curate a special package for the Bacchanalians.

As we hope you’ve heard by now, this month Smiley Pete Publishing (the parent company of this magazine) will produce the sixth iteration of our largest annual event, Crave Lexington Food & Music Festival. Through the festival over the years, we’ve made friends with a special couple, Erik Carlsen-Landy and Anansa Thompson, who we are confident are among the festival’s biggest fans – the second-annual Crave was one of their first big outings as a couple, and we are honored that this year’s festival will serve as the site of their engagement photos. We’ve enjoyed following their story over the years and hope you will enjoy meeting them as well! t’s common for food and drink to play a central role in a couple’s relationship, particularly in those early days of courtship. Lexington couple Erik Carlsen-Landy and Anansa Thompson, who met in 2014, are certainly no exception.

Erik said they even looked into hotel pricing in the area to see what it would cost them to return to Lexington for Crave, if they decided to move elsewhere.

Anansa Thompson and Erik Carlsen-Landy yuk it up at the 2017 Crave Lexington Food & Music Festival. The festival was the site at one of their first –and favorite – dates, and they’ll be taking engagement photos at this year’s event.

“[Erik] said that was the only way to do it and even paid for both of our tickets to get me to agree,” Anansa said. It turned out that for this couple, the splurge was totally worth it. They still cite that weekend at the festival as one of their favorite weekends together. Erik and Anansa have been to every iteration of the event together since then and will be celebrating their recent engagement at this month’s festival. Looking back, the couple considers that first experience at Crave to be not only a turning point for their relationship with each other, but for their relationship with Lexington as well. “Crave was one of the reasons we decided to stay in Lexington,” Anansa said, when asked why the festival is so special to them. “When Erik needed to decide where to take the bar exam, our conversations went from ‘Will we miss our family and friends?’ to ‘How are we going to get back for Crave?’”

While the couple was not quite prepared for what two days of “all you can eat and drink” in the heat of summer would entail that first year – “We both wore way too warm of clothing and ate too much too fast, and I may have been kicked off the stage for dancing during the Saturday night performance,” Erik remembers – they consider themselves pros at the event by now. They look most forward to discovering new local restaurants that they haven’t checked out before. Favorite discoveries of years past include Jasmine Rice, Sav’s and Hannah Lee Bubble Tea, as well as Crank & Boom Ice Cream Lounge. Pro tip from Crave pro, Erik, regarding Crank & Boom: Get there early and make it your first stop at the festival. “If you don’t get there early, the line [gets] crazy long,” he said. “It’s worth the wait, but I recommend starting your day off with ice cream at Crave.” Another pro tip: Drink plenty of water. Hydration can help stave off any less-thansavory effects of eating too much heavy food in the heat, Erik said. “Definitely go both days and split the park down the middle,” added Anansa. “Do one half of the park on the first day and the other half on the second, so you can experience everything.” Our favorite Crave couple will take a break from wedding planning to attend the sixth annual Crave Lexington Food & Music Festival at Masterson Station Fairgrounds on Aug. 11-12 – keep an eye out for a couple doing an engagement photoshoot on the festival grounds! cc CHEVYCHASER.COM || AUGUST 2018

hen expecting parents Hannah and Corey Maple purchased their bungalow in the Kenwick neighborhood in 2014, they knew making the house functional for their future family would require some work. At just around 1,400 square feet, the original space provided adequate room for the couple and their soon-to-arrive daughter, Hazel. But even though they loved their home from the beginning, planning for a growing family meant the house needed to grow along with them.

By the time 2017 rolled around, the couple was expecting their second child, Sam, and had spent the previous year planning a 1,000-square-foot addition. Soon after his birth, they moved out and began construction.

The Maples knew when they purchased their 1,000-squarefoot bungalow that it would take significant work for the space to work for their expanding family – but they were never deterred. PHOTOS BY BRADLEY QUINN AND EMILY GIANCARLO

As with many small bungalows in the neighborhood, the most glaring of issues with the original layout was the home’s kitchen, which Hannah describes as “really tiny and dysfunctional.” “I had about 18 inches of counter space – and we cook every night,” she said. “When we had our second child that small kitchen was no longer feasible.” The couple wanted an open area where the family could spend time together and the children could be involved with the cooking, so a large kitchen and family room space was at the heart of the renovation plans. They also added a master suite and expanded the attic to create an upstairs playroom – a space that can become another bedroom in the future. A partner in the new business Maple & Murphy Interior Design Studio, Hannah tapped on her professional abilities and connections to get the renovation done, drafting the floor plans herself and enlisting her father, architect Larry Bender of Bender Associates Architects, to work out any kinks and acquire the necessary construction documents. They brought in J.P. Barlow of J. Parrish builders as a consultant to assist with quality control; but to maximize their budget, the young couple managed the project themselves. In the kitchen, traditional upper cabinets were scrapped to allow for natural light, and a new, extra-large center island, topped with Carrara Marble purchased from Nicholasville’s Quality Stone Countertops, provided new storage space. The same marble was used on the countertops, and in a unique touch, as both the window trim and as a backsplash with a shelf behind the five-burner Bertazzoni Italian gas range stove. “We wanted the kitchen to feel homey and lived-in, and the marble counter will acquire a patina that will age gracefully with the house,” Hannah said. In addition to added cabinet storage space, the island also includes refrigerator and freezer drawers, paneled to blend seamlessly with the cabinetry designed by Small Batch Kitchens. The additional storage allows for the concealment of small appliances, giving the kitchen a clean, neat look.

Thomas Ricci Custom Cabinetry constructed and installed the custom cabinetry in the mudroom (top left) as well as the kitchen range hood and family room built-in shelves. Kitchen cabinetry was provided by Small Batch Kitchens and Hannah’s studio Maple & Murphy oversaw interior design. PHOTOS BY BRADLEY QUINN AND EMILY GIANCARLO

Seating at the island was designed so that the chairs surround one corner, a configuration that Hannah says helps to foster conversation, since the chairs aren’t all in a row. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the family room provide additional light to the entire area, as well as a view of the backyard.

“I wanted a lot of light,” she emphasized. “It felt so dark before, and I want the kids to feel connected to nature, even in a downtown area.” The couple also wanted a space that would allow for gatherings of guests. “We love to have friends over, and most of them also have kids,” Hannah said. “We want everyone to feel comfortable, and we never want a reason not to open our doors to people.” The light and open feel continues into the new master suite. The same floor-to-ceiling windows are present, and the furniture in the bedroom is pared down due to the storage provided by the European-style wardrobe wall designed by Thomas Ricci Custom Cabinetry. Five wardrobes with pull-out shelves equip the room with enough space for both Hannah’s and Corey’s wardrobes. The new master bath includes matching cabinetry, as well as the same Carrara Marble used in the kitchen.

Other modifications include adding a second entry from the driveway straight into the kitchen with a small mudroom and a mainfloor laundry room. During planning, the Maples realized the addition would eliminate some of the backyard but are pleased with that result as well. “The yard is smaller, but somehow the intimacy of the space has made it more enjoyable for us as a family and is great for outdoor entertaining,” said Hannah. Corey, a partner at the creative services firm Harris & Ward, as well as downtown event venue The Livery, was also a producer on the documentary “Neat: The Story of Bourbon” and has plans to create a bourbon room in a front room nook where previous owners had opened up a former bedroom. After being out of the house for seven months during construction, the family moved back in just days before Christmas. “It feels amazing to be back in the house,” Corey said. Currently expecting their third child, the couple could have moved to a larger home instead of taking on the construction – but they never seriously considered relocating. “We love this neighborhood, so it was a pretty easy decision to add on to this house and stay here,” said Corey, who purchased the nearby Wilson’s Groceries & Market earlier this year, and is preparing to reopen it this month.

“We feel blessed to be living here,” he added. While the process of project managing one’s own home renovation can be daunting for some homeowners, the experience was valuable for Hannah, who just launched her design studio – located on National Avenue, a stone’s throw from her home – earlier this year with business partner Jamie Murphy. “I love construction and the whole building process, so the project was exciting for me,” she said. “We anticipate being here for a long time.” cc

A highlight of the 1,000-square-foot addition is the open-concept family room. Homeowner and designer Hannah Maple worked with her father, architect Larry Bender, to finalize plans, and served as her own project manager for the renovation. PHOTO BY BRADLEY QUINN AND EMILY GIANCARLO

ASK ABBY VAUGHN How do I survive the investment roller coaster? HI ABBY: Over the last few months I’ve been watching my portfolio go up and down and it’s really stressing me out. This just isn’t a roller coaster I want to be on. What should I do? —MOTION SICK INVESTOR HI MOTION SICK: You’re right, at times investing can feel like you are on a roller coaster. The big drop on a roller coaster, however, is definitely more fun than a sizable dip in the market! It’s completely understandable to have an emotional reaction to volatility, but it’s those emotions that can get investors into trouble. This is why we take a goalsbased approach to investing with our clients. It’s not just

about numbers or red and green arrows, it’s about where you want that investment to take you. What do you want your retirement to look like? How much do you want to fund for college for your kids? Where

do you want to be in 5, 10, 20 years down the road? Many individuals will share the same investments, but few, if any will share the same goals. At Unified Trust, we believe that investing begins with planning. Once a plan is established, we actively manage the portfolio to help keep you on the path to achieving your goals, making adjustments as needed over time. This planning-first approach can help you see past the volatility and provide a smoother ride to achieving your goals. And since you tend to get motion sick, next time you are at an amusement park, maybe just skip the roller coaster altogether! —ABBY V.

any folks in Lexington know Bob Willcutt as the founder of Lexington mainstay Willcutt Guitars, his shop on Rosemont Garden that just celebrated 50 years in business.

OVER 50 YEARS IN BUSINESS

However, most might be surprised to learn the veteran lead guitarist and revered guitar vendor has another passion that’s been part of his life as long as music. “I’ve always been interested in photography,” said Willcutt, 70. “I was the photo editor of my high school newspaper – back in the days of darkrooms, when you wouldn’t know whether you’d gotten the shot until two weeks later, when you got around to developing it.” In the past few years, Willcutt has devoted his photographer’s eye to capturing stunning images of local birds. The resulting collection, “Feathers of Fayette: Wild Birds of Lexington, Kentucky,” was published in early May by Acclaim Press. Inside the full-color book are photographs ranging from easyto-spot birds like mourning doves, house sparrows and cardinals to more elusive specimens – such as great egrets – that many residents may not realize ever pass through this area. The book features some 200 images that Willcutt captured inside Fayette County between 2015 and 2017. “The variety of birds Bob captures is striking,” says Tony Brusate, president of the Central Kentucky Audubon Society (CKAS), which receives a portion of the proceeds from the book’s sales. “Most people don’t look up, and they don’t notice that these birds are all around us. Once you begin noticing them, they’re so impressive.”

Beauty in Everyday Diversity Many of the images in the book were taken in Willcutt’s own backyard, off Harrodsburg Road. Others are from some of his favorite bird-spotting hotspots in the county, including Jacobson Park, McConnell Springs and Raven Run. He stocks his yard with bird feeders but doesn’t otherwise lure the birds. His goal, he says, is to capture the bird as “an actor in a scene” that relays an artistic composition in some way – whether via droplets of water falling off their wings or in the way the sunlight makes their feathers pop against the blossoms of a tree.

Above: Great herons are often seen at Jacobson Park, and photographing them is something Willcutt says he “never gets tired of.” Left: This male northern cardinal was shot on Willcutt’s Canon EOS-1D camera. PHOTOS BY BOB WILCUTT

“I’m not just documenting the birds. I didn’t set out to create a field guide. My goal was to capture images that were artistically interesting,” explains Willcutt, who doesn’t consider himself a true “birder.” In fact, he Central often found himself in the Kentucky field capturing photos of Audubon specimens – only to idenSociety tify and learn more about them once he got home Want to learn more and consulted his field about which birds guides or through the help can be spotted loof David Lang, vice presically and when? When he first saw the published book earlier this spring – after more than two years of work photographing and narrowing from roughly 30,000 images to create it – Willcutt got “almost teary,” he says. “The press nailed the colors exactly.” “Feathers of Fayette” actually marks Willcutt’s second book of photography – he published a photographic study of musical instrument collectors in the 1970s. If the right project comes along – perhaps capturing the birds of a particular local park, say – he seems eager to work on a third.

Some of Willcutt’s favorite images in the book include ones of the Jacobson Park bald eagle as well as play-by-play shots of an intense territory battle between a blue jay and a red-tailed hawk. When pressed to pick a single image he’s most proud of, though, Willcutt points to page 188, where he captured a female hooded merganser – a small duck species – swimming jauntily as the morning light glistens off her wake. “When the bird arrives on the scene, there are so many variables to manage in a matter of a few seconds – shutter speed, ISO, aperture – and you can’t have any vibration in bird photography whatsoever,” Willcutt says. “But when it all comes together and you get the shot, it’s exciting. It’s a rush.” cc

Book Signing Bob Willcutt will sign and discuss his book at a Sept. 12 event at Ashland: The Henry Clay Estate starting at noon. Call (859) 266-8581 ext. 202 for a reservation.

Cookies for Breakfast RECIPE BY JASON SMITH, JUDGE FOR FOOD NETWORK’S “BEST BAKER IN AMERICA” PHOTO BY THERESA STANLEY

Parents, before you turn away from the idea of a “cookie for breakfast,” this flourless recipe, provided by Kentucky native and Food Network star Jason Smith, is chock full of the protein and goodness your kids need to get through the school day. Smith – judge of the Food Network show “Best Baker in America” and winner of several of that network’s cooking competitions – should know; the talented chef has a background as school cafeteria manager for Isonville Elementary in Eastern Kentucky. The cookie makes for a perfect breakfast on the go or school snack for kids and parents alike.

Ingredients • 2 ripe bananas, mashed • 1 cup “quick cook” oatmeal • 2 tablespoons peanut butter • 2 tablespoons honey • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/4 cup chocolate chips (optional) • 1/4 cup almonds, pecans or walnuts, chopped (optional) • Pinch of salt Method Heat oven to 350. Line a baking sheet with a silpat or parchment paper. In a bowl, combine bananas, oats, cinnamon, vanilla and salt. Mix until combined. Add peanut butter and honey; stir.

You can catch chef Jason Smith at this month’s Crave Lexington Food + Music Festival (Aug.11-12 at Masterson Station Fairgrounds), where he will serve as host and emcee of the festival’s Food Performance Stage. Chef Smith will share stories and food tips alongside local chefs and other culinary personalities and bring his signature “Southern country bling” to one of the biggest food festivals in his home state.

Fold in chocolate chips and nuts (optional). Using a two-ounce cookie scoop, place six dough balls on baking sheet. Flatten slightly with a spoon that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for 12 minutes. Repeat until dough is gone. Recipe makes one dozen. cc
