crave worthy local restaurant news to know A version of this article appeared in the October issue of our sister publication, Business Lexington. Downtown Lexington restaurant Distilled had been located at the Sire Hotel (formerly Gratz Park Inn) on West Second Street since opening six years ago, but owner Mark Wombles announced recently it would be moving to the former Nick Ryan’s location on Jefferson Street, with an expected midOctober reopening date. North Lime Coffee & Donuts will also soon relocate, from the corner of North Limestone and West Sixth streets to Greyline Station at the corner of Loudon and North Limestone. A Sept. 8 Facebook post said: “We are so grateful to all of you for supporting us through the years and helping give us this opportunity to move to a bigger, even more beautiful location.” Frank and Dino’s Italian restaurant is on track for a late November opening at the corner of Short and Mill, owner Carlo Vaccarezza recently posted on Facebook.

Respect is earned, not given. As Lexington’s mayor, I worked with issues that made a difference in people’s lives. Our budgets were balanced, we invested in people and neighborhoods, and we always focused on basic community needs. Bill Farmer has earned my respect, and my support for Fifth District Council. – Mayor Jim Gray

In late August, ItalX, an Italian fine dining concept at the corner of Main and Upper streets spearheaded by T.J. Cox and Jonathan Lundy, posted on social media that the anticipated restaurant was about a month out from opening. Bombay Palace Indian restaurant has opened at 1801 Alexandria Drive for dine in, takeout and delivery.

Brevedé Coffee Co. opened at 1170 Manchester St,. Ste. 110, on Sept. 5. The menu features handcrafted coffee, Belgian waffles and more. Tudor’s Biscuit World has signage at 757 E. New Circle Road that promises of opening soon. Mobile hot dog cart Katie’s Happy Hot Dogs debuted in midAugust. The cart will appear at various locations in Lexington, Versailles and Georgetown, primarily Friday through Sunday, with a schedule that can be tracked at the business’ Facebook page, facebook.com/katieshappyhotdogs. Owner Katie Flora says she has wanted to run a hot dog cart since she was a little girl and decided during COVID-19 that it was time to follow her dreams. The menu features simple all-beef hot dogs with special seasonings and “a heaping side of happiness.”

Stella’s

In not-so-happy news, Hopcat has closed at 410 W. Short St. following local speculation to that end. “It is with a heavy heart that we confirm the rumors,” a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page said. “We are permanently closed. We cannot say ‘Thank you’ enough for the support you have given us the past five years.” The establishment was known for its craft beer and Cozmik fries. The post asked that customers continue to support its local brewery partners. Lexington-based chain A&W Restaurants also confirmed plans for closing its 652 E. Main St. location in late September. The location had been open five years, and the chain operates two other Lexington locations. n - Reporting by Shannon Clinton for Business Lexington

rowing up in Jackson County, Gwenda Bond’s imagination grew like a wild vine in summer. It grew beyond the bounds of her backyard and her small Kentucky town – even beyond this world, into magical, fantastic and sometimes spooky, mysterious places. “I was obsessed with stories,” said Bond, the daughter of two educators who surrounded her with books from an early age. “I was that obnoxious child who declared I wanted to be a writer before I could read or write.”

Gwenda Bond GETTING TO KNOW THE LEXINGTON AUTHOR BEHIND “SUSPICIOUS MINDS,” THE OFFICIAL PREQUEL NOVEL TO THE NETFLIX SERIES “STRANGER THINGS”

As it turns out, that declaration had legs. Today, Bond is a fulltime writer living and working in Lexington with more than a dozen books under her belt in genres ranging from fantasy, mystery and science fiction to romantic comedy and young adult (YA). Titles include “Lois Lane,” a trilogy centering on the love life of one of Bond’s favorite fictional heroines, to the 2019 novel “Suspicious Minds,” the official prequel to the popular Netflix series “Stranger Things.” The earliest important touchstone books in her life, Bond recalls, include fairy tales as a child and science fiction and fantasy books such as “The Hobbit” and “The Chronicles of Narnia” series as she got a bit older. “I also loved poring over anthologies,” she said. She quickly graduated to reading Stephen King and the “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” series, and as a teenager, fell into Latin American magical realism through what she describes as “happy bookstore accidents.”

Being a full-time writer means you’re pretty much always under deadline, and author Gwenda Bond primarily works toward her deadlines from her Lexington home.

But for many years, Bond’s professional track centered on a very different realm than fantasy and escape. After majoring in journalism at Eastern Kentucky University, she took a job with a state government out of college. While that job had her working in public health communications for the next 17 years, she continued to write articles, book reviews and screenplays in her personal time, trying to find her creative niche. “It took me a while to stumble into the kind of writing I wanted to do,” Bond explained. While the popular young adult (YA) authors Francesca Lia Block and Christopher Pike were among her favorites as a teenager, it wasn’t until she was an adult – a time she says YA was in its “new golden era” – that she truly fell in love with that genre, while reading books like Holly Black’s “Tithe.” “I knew I had found what I wanted to write,” she said.

10

Deciding she needed to learn more about writing fiction, Bond enrolled in a lowresidency Masters of Fine Arts program at Vermont College of Fine Arts and graduated two years later, continuing to work full-time and write along the way. By the end of graduate school, she had secured an agent and gained some solid writing experience. She and her agent shopped around several of her earlier novels but didn’t find success until her novel “Blackwood” – the fourth novel she had written, and the third her agent had shopped – was picked up by a publishing house in Great Britain. Bond soon came to understand that she was in a marathon not a sprint. “A lot of writers believe you must land your first book, but that’s rare,” she said. “Once you sell one book, it becomes easier – because

now publishers know you a little better and they take a closer look.” Many of her early books that were initially passed over have now been published. “I like to say I was a very long overnight success,” she said, laughing. With more than a dozen books published in less than a decade, the author has certainly found her stride. Bond believes spending time with other writers is essential to the writing process, and one writer with whom she’s spent quite a bit of time with is her husband, Christopher Rowe. The two met at a writing conference in 2001 and married in 2004. Together, the couple, who live on Lexington’s north side, have copenned the “Supernormal Sleuthing Service” series, often talking through the process while walking their dogs.

“All art is conversation,” she said, adding that it’s helpful that the two have different strengths: He enjoys composition while she loves revision. “It’s always fun to see the magic of what you can create with other people and how it’s different than what you’d come up with on your own.” To that end, Bond and fellow local writer Lisa Hanenberg collaborated earlier this year to launch the Writers Room, a shared space where writers can come together not only to work but also to find support and inspiration from each other. While the project — launched right before the pandemic took hold — has yet to reach its full potential, its participating writers have been meeting online regularly and look forward to gathering in person in the future. “Life in the arts is hard,” she said. “It’s important to connect.” Up next for this busy writer is a romantic comedy set in Lexington, which will be released next fall. “And I always have a couple of secret projects going on, too,” Bond adds with a laugh – always enjoying injecting a little mystery into the mix. Her fans can’t wait.

Bond recently took some time from her deadline-heavy schedule to chat with Smiley Pete reporter Celeste Lewis. Tell me about your writing process. I think most of us, when we talk about our processes, make it sound either neater or messier than it is. We look back on it and make up a story, because that’s what we’re hardwired to do. So the lie I’ll tell you today is that over time I’ve become more of an outliner. I do the best I can to get to know my characters up front, so I can do a decently fleshed-out outline on index cards on my office wall, and then I try to progress through that plan as best I can. I find drafting painful and love revision, so any hack I can use to make drafting feel less like walking a tightrope without a net is welcome. The true answer is that the pandemic has been a challenge to my writing process, and so I’m working more in fits and starts than usual. However, the great thing about being a writer with deadlines is that eventually you are forced to do the work – no matter how distracted or anxious you are about the world. I’m always thinking how to surprise and delight the reader. How did you get involved with ‘Stranger Things’? Please share some of your thoughts about that franchise and how it has captured the imagination of such a wide audience. I was lucky enough to be asked by my publisher, Del Rey, if I would be interested in taking on the first ‘Stranger Things’ novel. They had been in discussions with Netflix and the Duffer Brothers about concepts, and so I knew it would be about Terry, Eleven’s mother. But they were also very clear that I’d have quite a bit of freedom to make it my own, and obviously I said yes to the project. I think the Duffers and I share quite a bit of story influence DNA – we grew up reading the same books and watching a lot of the same TV and movies that are clearly present in ‘Stranger Things’ as reference points. I discovered the show almost as soon as it dropped, via a tweet from Stephen King, and fell in love with it. It very successfully blends a nostalgia for the past with the emotional issues and high stakes of young friendships that are evergreen, with the supernatural and an evil government bad guy as big cherries on top. With ‘Suspicious Minds,’ I tried to make sure all those larger ingredients were present, but it’s set in a different year [1969], with a different friend group makeup [college students, a mostly girl gang] and also shows an earlier glimpse at the show’s greatest villain, Dr. Brenner.

...MORE THAN A MOVING COMPANY

“Your trucks are everywhere! For all of us at Wildcat Moving this is music to our ears! We are humbled by the recognition and steadfast support we have received from the community since we first opened almost a decade ago. Lexington is our home so we embrace the responsibility to serve the people and organizations in the central Kentucky region who need help the most. While we strive to be the best moving company in the Commonwealth, our proudest achievements are born from the work we do where you may not see our trucks. We support local charities and non-profit organizations who focus on a diverse range of community uplifting, even lifesaving, initiatives. Whether it be moving a victim of domestic violence to a safe space or providing a truck to store donated bicycles during the holidays, we answer the call. We also work with organizations who promote and advocate for early childhood education, literacy, healthy living, pediatric cancer research, and much more. We donated more than a thousand labor hours in 2019, plus trucks and equipment, to assist charities behind these causes in fulfilling their missions.

While monetary considerations are important, we believe collaborating with our charitable partners through actionable planning and effort will foster meaningful relationships and create impactful change within Lexington and the region at large. No cause is too big or too small to ask for our help. We are the best in town at moving furniture, but we are even better at moving the community forward.

What is something that scares you? Right now? The news. I’m terrified for my friends on the West Coast among raging wildfires caused by climate change. I’m worried for all of us because of the patchwork approach of pandemic response, state by state and community by community, and the number of lives that have already been lost. I’m worried for the future fallout if the country doesn’t change these and a number of other policies to be more humane and more forward thinking. I’m afraid we won’t make those changes. I’m afraid people won’t vote [please vote – in every election, always]. Also, mice. Tell me about your fans and how you engage with them. I have great fans, and I try to be accessible to them on Twitter, somewhat via email and on other platforms. I post a lot of photos of my dogs – Puck, Sally and Izzy – and my cats – Phoebe and Stella – but they assure me they like that. How do you feel about the role of social media in our lives now? It’s a blessing and a curse. I love that it keeps us connected, but I also think it can be a vicious dopamine cycle that distracts us from deeper engagement and thinking, and that doesn’t always present events in a contextual way. That said, I’ll take the downsides for all the friendships I’ve made and people I’ve learned about important issues from – whose voices I might not have heard otherwise. What are your thoughts on how we consume media these days with many independent bookstores disappearing from the landscape? How do writers adapt to the changes? How long do we have? Independent bookstores are incredibly important to me, and to all of us, culturally. Earlier this year, feeling paralyzed in the pandemic, my friend Kami Garcia approached me with an idea to do something to help both local comic shops and indie bookstores get through COVID. That led to us co-founding the #Creators4Comics auction with our friend Sam Humphries, and we managed to raise almost half a million dollars in just a week for the Book Industry Charitable Foundation to send to stores and booksellers. More than anything, that experience reminded me there is a larger community that recognizes the importance of print and of booksellers, and it made me feel much more optimistic about the future. That said, I fear there are difficult times ahead because of COVID and the way it’s increasing other trends toward online shopping, and that if we come through the pandemic with fewer bookstores it will be a loss we’ll feel for decades. As writers, the

with what you like to read best. Surround yourself with people who want you to do your best work. Be disciplined, but not so much that you forget to live.

What advice do you have for writers starting out? Read everything! Read across genres. Respect the craft. Write what you want, and if you don’t know what that is, start

If you were not a writer, what is another line of work you might have liked to try? I think I’d make an excellent spy. Or lady of leisure. n

RELEASE RADAR

Lexington-area musicians continue to create – and record – amid pandemic by MATT WICKSTROM & saraya brewer REPORTING help FROM ALLISON PIN & john henry reynolds

Despite being largely sidelined from live performances since mid-March due to COVID-19, many central Kentucky musicians have continued to seek creative outputs. If anything, these past six months have yielded a wealth of time to write and develop new material, with many local bands and songwriters having released (or preparing to release) new albums of note. In partnership with Lexington music blogger Matt Wickstrom (Wick’s Picks) and our friends at University of Kentucky college radio station WRFL (88.1 FM), we’ve rounded up a diverse selection of 10 albums that were released recently or are coming soon.

Lexington band Magnolia Boulevard, pictured above at a recording session at NitroSonic earlier this year, released its debut EP, “New Illusion,” in August.

Magnolia Boulevard ‘New Illusion’

Local rockers Magnolia Boulevard released their debut EP, “New Illusion,” a wellproduced four-song collection of funky rock and soul ballads, on Aug. 7. Recorded, produced and mixed by Paul Reed Smith at Dragon Crossing Studio in Annapolis, Maryland, and mastered by Ted Jensen (The Eagles, Green Day, Norah Jones) at Sterling Sound in Nashville, Tennessee, the compilation offers up freshly polished interpretations of some of the band’s most recognizable songs. The new recording of “Ride,” the project’s lead track, features an upbeat New Orleans flair with horns and harmonious backup vocals that take frontwoman Maggie Noelle’s already audacious energy to new heights, as she sings of living in the moment and not taking the little joys of life for granted. The EP also shines a light on “Sister,” a heartfelt ballad describing the powerful bond of sisterhood that Noelle penned for her best friend. From upbeat and jam-driven sounds to soulful and bluesy breakdowns, with Noelle’s powerhouse vocals and guitarist Gregg Erwin’s soaring licks on full display, the EP does an excellent job of illustrating the band’s live sound and versatility. “Of course I miss playing shows, but I think I speak for a lot of musicians when I say the break has been a breath of fresh air, almost like a reset button,” said Noelle. “You better believe everyone will be roaring and ready to go when touring and live shows are back to their regular beat. By releasing this EP during the pandemic, I hope people understand we’re still here and we’re still ready to go once it’s safe to do so.” “New Illusion” is available to purchase at www.MagnoliaBoulevardBand.com and is available to purchase and stream on all major digital services. Justin Wells ‘The United State’

Lexington artist Justin Wells has returned with the long-awaited and highly anticipated follow-up to his 2016 debut, “Dawn In The Distance.” Released at the end of August, “The United State” was recorded by Duane Lundy at the Lexington Recording Company and The Midwest Sound in Rockford, Illinois, and sees Wells joined by an impressive collection of collaborators, including members of Cheap Trick, These United States, and Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts and others. The artist described the project as a “life album,” with each song portraying a different phase of the shared human experience, from joy, ecstasy and hope to sorrow, pain and fear, all amid a canvas of Southern rock arrangements. As the world continues to grow more polarized, Wells said he hopes “The United State” can be a beacon of hope and unity, reminding the listener that despite differences in opinions, Americans are united by common bonds and are stronger working together rather than tearing each other down. While Wells said he’d love to tour the album and that it’s certainly his hope that folks connect with the songs, he’s focusing on being patient and riding out this pause. “I’ll be at the shows when it’s time to be, and folks will be there too… In the meantime, let’s hunker down,” he said. “Let’s build some gardens. Let’s figure out the kind of people we want to be.” The 12-song album is available now on all major streaming services, as well as for purchase at www.JustinWellsMusic.com. Bear Medicine ‘Dog Is Love’

The forthcoming second full-length release from Lexington outfit Bear Medicine has been in the works for nearly two years, and the time and attention given to the project is evident in the detail, maturity and professionalism of the final product. Recorded at Otto Helmuth’s studio and beautifully orchestrated with guitar, cello, fiddle, flute and keys, the album is a collection of complex compositions layered with striking vocal harmonies, carefully crafted lyrics and a swell of emotions. While the album reflects an air of nostalgia, loss and longing, it also manages to create an enveloping sense of comfort, healing and hope, particularly when the songs are experienced together as a collection. “I don’t want to call it a concept album at all, but there is definitely a thread through the songs and, hopefully, some sort of abstract narrative,” explained songsmith, vocalist and guitarist Joshua Wright. His wife, accomplished cellist Cecilia Wright, is responsible for the string arrangements, and a host of musician friends in the Lexington community, including Scott Wilmouth, Robby Cosenza, Kim Conlee, Emily Woxihara and Sam McWilliams, also lend instrumentation and vocals to the album. Wright explained that the album centered on “all kinds of loss,” from friends and pets to faith, family and a muse. But rather than solely dwelling on the sadness that comes with loss, a deeper message seeps through. The band is hoping for an October release for the album; ordering will be available at www.BearMedicine.bandcamp.com. Recommended if you like: Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Billy Bragg; Wilco

Tyler Childers ‘Long Violent History”’

While it might be a stretch to include this in a grouping of Lexington-based music releases, the surprise collection of fiddle music that contemporary honky-tonk hero Tyler Childers dropped in September – seemingly out of nowhere – is met with enough local interest to warrant its inclusion. For the album, Childers (an eastern Kentucky songwriter who has been playing fiddle for less than a year) and his bandmate Jesse Wells (an established fiddle player) invited a curated sevenpiece modern string band – including Lexington cellist Cecilia Wright – to record renditions of mostly traditional fiddle standards. The nine-song release is almost exclusively instrumental, veering from that format only with the title track, which features lyrics penned by Childers that make a poignant and timely statement on current events. The unexpected and unannounced release seemed to catch even Childers’ most devout fans off guard. While it’s a significant detour from his usual approach to songwriting and won’t likely astonish experts steeped in the realm of traditional string music from a technical point of view, it’s certainly a special and noteworthy addition to the canon of Kentucky music. The album is available to stream on all major services and to purchase at www.TylerChildersMusic.com. All proceeds go to Hickman Holler Appalachian Relief Fund, a foundation that Childers and his wife, Senora May, started earlier this year to bring awareness and financial support for philanthropic efforts in the Appalachian Region. Dark Moon Hollow ‘Dark Moon Hollow’

Earlier this year, Lexington bluegrass band Dark Moon Hollow was anticipating its biggest summer of festival performances. After COVID-19 put the kibosh on large gatherings for the year, the group opted to funnel its time spent cooped up in Lexington toward finishing its debut, self-titled album. Recorded locally with producer/engineer Jason Groves at Sneak Attack Recording Company, the 11-song effort features all original songs penned by guitarists Brett Horton and Trey Reinhart, including the rowdy bluegrass ballads “Drinkin’ Again” and “Little Lady,” the latter featuring local multi-instrumentalist, studio musician and producer J. Tom Hnatow (Vandaveer, Horse Feathers, These United States) on pedal steel guitar. The album is slated for Oct. 31 release, with pre-orders available soon at www.DarkMoonHollowBluegrass.com. Everyone Lives Everyone Wins ‘The Crystal Womb’

The early stages of conceptualization for this album can be traced back about 10 years, when members of the mysterious local music and performance collective Everyone Lives Everyone wins (ELEW) came across a National Geographic article about Mexico’s Cueva de Cristales (Cave of Crystals) and decided that, clearly, a subterranean cave of mega crystals merited having a heavy riff written in its honor. This album is the result of a multi-year process of refining a concept that centers on the hypnotic quality of that riff, expressed in longform. With just two tracks, each about 18 minutes, the release features guest musicians Warren Byrom, Doc Feldman, Chris Smith, Adam Nicholson and a vocal appearance by Brittany Harrison – rare for the group, whose output is typically instrumental. The release is a follow-up to the group’s most recent album, “Persistence Hunting Dream Death,” which centered on the theme of fearlessly preparing to meet death by hunting down the unknown through our dreams. To follow that theme, the group explained, this album became a sonic exploration of the question, “Well, you are chasing down death. What are you going to do if you catch it?” Featuring album art by Lexington tattoo artist Joe King, the CD will be released on Oct. 2, with a subsequent cassette to be released later this year. Devine Carama ‘Worshipping in the Wilderness’

Lexington hip hop artist Devine Carama described this release as his most personal project. The musician, who has released over a dozen albums since 2008, admitted in a recent chat with WRFL’s local music director Allison Pin that many of his past albums were mainly for “sport,” i.e., to showcase his ability as an MC. But this album, released in the aftermath of the death of his daughter earlier this year, emerged as an outlet for the socially conscious artist to express considerably heavier thoughts and emotions. The album title “Worshiping in the Wilderness” refers to the notion that many of us are living through struggle and tough times, which could be likened to a wilderness. Maintaining faith and hope, however, are among the main messages that come through in this album. In addition to touching on the death of his daughter, the album also features messages to young women, musings on effects of the pandemic and reflections on “trying to find value as a Black man in a country that increasingly devalues.” Producer JK-47 provides strong support on the timely and emotional release, having recorded, mixed and mastered the album while providing consistent and driving rhythms throughout. The album is available to stream and purchase online at www.DevineCarama.Bandcamp.com.

Restless Leg String Band ‘Seasonal Progression’

Frenetic local jam grassers Restless Leg String Band are shaking a leg with the forthcoming release of “Seasonal Progression,” a full-length album due out by the year’s end. The project is the band’s third full-length album and the first studio recording featuring its newest member, Louisvillebased mandolinist Chris Cupp, who joined in August 2018. The collection features 10 songs, from the title track, an instrumental co-composed by all members of the band, to “My Blood,” which was penned by banjoist Jonathan Bramel and features an edgy blues sound. Like with the band’s first two albums – 2016’s self-titled effort and 2018’s “Bigger Than A Feeling” – the album was recorded with Jason Groves at Sneak Attack Recording Company on Southland Drive. The Velvet Rage ‘You Can’t Do This To Us’

Self-described “shoegays” – a play on the shoegaze genre – Bradford Wilburn and Lukas Bullock have delivered a unique album that transcends genres and stands out from many of the other albums on this list, stylistically. The band has cited influences from goth, darkwave and avant-pop to radical queer politics. Introspective lyrics take a backseat in the mix to programmed drums and warm synth tones mixed with guitars, live drums and reverb-heavy vocals. The elements come together to deliver a highly produced yet low-key sound, peppered with catchy beats and ambient interludes alike. The album is available to stream and purchase at www.TheVelvetRage.com/bandcamp.

Aged to Perfection. Elizabeth Varnado ‘elizr’

Multi-instrumentalist Elizabeth Varnado released her debut EP, “elizr,” on Sept. 24. Recorded with Duane Lundy at the Lexington Recording Company in March during the first week the COVID-19 pandemic hit Lexington, the whimsical six-song collection sees the artist breaking out of her shell, as she not only sings but also tracks all of the instruments on the project (violin, piano, acoustic and electric guitars) with the exception of bass, which was handled by her husband, Paul Varnado. The songs on “elizr” document Varnado’s experiences over the past decade, a time in which the musician, who is also a member of the popular local indie rock outfit Lylak, began to find herself and overcome the stage fright and vulnerability of performing and singing about her feelings in front of people. “It isn’t a peppy record, per se, but I believe the weird, bittersweet and complicated feelings that the EP is full of are the most beautiful parts of life,” said Varnado. She gave the EP her own nickname, she said, because of how personal the production and songwriting are to her. “I hope people who know me well will recognize my personality, and folks who don’t know me will get to know me,” she said. The “elizr” EP is available to purchase at www.elizr.bandcamp.com. The album is also available to stream on all major platforms. Recommended if you like: Bedouine, May Erlewine, Joan Shelley n

ess than 30 minutes from downtown Lexington lies the Boone Creek Gorge – a small, beautiful part of the Kentucky River Palisades that houses Boone Creek Outdoors, a popular destination for outdoor adventurers that offers a private fly-fishing club, zip line canopy tours and hiking tours. Recently, the Boone Creek Outdoors team has reinstated another opportunity for guests to experience the beauty and wonder of the natural setting, with the opening of a historic rustic cabin for short-term rentals, and the reopening of a unique on-site lodge that had been closed for more than a year for renovation and repair. Boone Creek Outdoors founder and owner Burgess Carey is an avid, lifelong outdoor enthusiast who grew up in Lexington – and at one time thought he’d need to leave the area for easy access to the outdoor recreation opportunities he loved.

“I grew up thinking there was nothing in Lexington like this,” Carey said, gesturing to the forested, creekside property where the lodge and outdoor center are housed. He acquired the property in 1994 after being introduced to the land by what he considers a happy accident. He has since been building on his dream of providing access to and education about Kentucky’s natural resources through a business he said is built on a foundation of preservation and low environmental impact.

Both the land, which once belonged to Daniel Boone, and the lodge, originally constructed in the late 1980s, are steeped in a storied and fascinating past – in fact, the lodge is rumored to have possible ties to one of Lexington’s most notorious crime sagas, as detailed in Sally Denton’s 1989 book “The Bluegrass Conspiracy.” In the early 1990s, a friend of Carey’s was in the process of purchasing an adjacent property and invited Carey to hike with him in search of a waterfall he’d heard existed in the area. Carey, who had been living in out west and had returned to Lexington for what he thought to be a temporary basis, jumped at the chance. During the hike, he found himself completely captivated and taken aback by the natural beauty of the gorge, which he hadn’t previously realized existed. The two found the waterfall, which is now a highlight of a two-mile hiking tour offered at Boone Creek Outdoors – but that wasn’t all they found.

“We were working our way up the creek and literally looked to our right and saw this house,” Carey said, referring to a modern wooden house, tucked away in a creekside plot surrounded by steep wooded hills. “We thought, ‘how in the world did that get here?’” Nearly hidden from view, the lodge, which had been abandoned for nine years at the time, had been nearly untouched by vandalism but had suffered significant water damage. “It was so waterlogged that you could have pushed it over,” Carey said. Thoroughly enchanted with the property, which had a strong aura of abandonment, Carey took to the task of hunting down the landowner so he could express his interest in purchasing it. After chatting with some folks who were living in a rundown building near the road on the property (formerly a truck stop and diner called the Jolly Roger), he soon realized they were actually squatters who were inhabiting the property illegally. Finally, he reached the landowner, Sam Whitehead, who was living in Florida. As Carey found out, Whitehead had acquired the property at auction in the early 1980s, following a diesel leak at the Jolly Roger that left the land tarnished by hazardous waste. Whitehead drew up the plans for the lodge, built it in 1981 and lived there from 1982 to 1983 before abandoning the property to nature. Eventually, Carey was able to work out a deal with Whitehead that let him acquire the property, taking ownership in 1994 when he was in his mid-20s. In those early years of owning the property, Carey, who was in the construction industry, did some minimal repairs and restoration to the lodge, while focusing most of his energy on cleaning up the land and figuring out the best way to bring out the potential of its natural features. In 2000, he launched the Boone Creek Angler’s Club, a members-only fly-fishing club that allows members exclusive access to Boone Creek and its impressive stock of brown and rainbow trout. Boone Creek Outdoors’ zip line and canopy tour and a twomile guided hiking tour officially opened for business in 2017, after more than five years of highly publicized controversy, disputes with neighbors, lawsuits, zoning changes and an eventual compromise that allowed for a scaled-down version of Carey’s originally proposed outdoor adventure center, which was inspired in part by North Carolina’s Nantahala Outdoor Center.

The Boone Creek Palisades, a subsection of the Kentucky River Palisades, offer a pristine glimpse at at unique natural rock formations, water features, plants and wildlife.

The full zip line canopy tour includes six lines – the longest stretching 300 feet above the ground – as well as multiple suspension bridges, a spiral staircase and “floating” staircase, and a place where visitors can rappel. (An abbreviated tour that leaves out many of those elements is also available.) Platforms are built into the trees rather than into manmade structures on the ground to minimize the permanent environmental impact. “All those elements are designed...to allow you to slow down and to really notice what’s around you,” said Carey, who is also affiliated with Canopy Crew, a popular company that has built a handful of unique short-

term rental options up in the trees of the Red River Gorge. While Carey said there are definitely thrills involved with going on a zip line canopy tour, he emphasizes that all of the experiences offered at the business are centered on multi-dimensional exposure to the history and geology of the area, including education about its ecology and invasive species that threaten it. “We want our guides to be fully trained in an interpretive outline so that they can teach as well as entertain,” he said. Read on for more information on the Angler’s Lodge and cabin rental.

ocated on Old Richmond Road, the outdoor recreation center Boone Creek Outdoors offers several ways to enjoy and appreciate the natural splendor of the area. Perhaps the most relaxing is an overnight stay at a rustic cabin on the property that opened as a short-term rental earlier this year, or a weekend getawat at its sprawling creekside lodge, which recently reopened for short-term rentals after more than a year of renovation and repair. Near collapse when owner Burgess Carey purchased it in 1994, the lodge has recently been refinished as a spacious yet cozy getaway and respite. It was originally intended as an amenity for annual members of the Boone Creek Angler’s Club, a private fly-fishing club that allows members exclusive access to a unique trout fishing location on Boone Creek, but members rarely used it for overnight lodging. Having also served, on and off, as temporary lodging for builders and zip line operators who worked with the recreation center, the home has recently become available to the general public for short stays that can also include temporary membership to the Angler’s Club.

Originally built in the early 1980s, the Boone Creek Lodge had been victim to nearly a decade of neglect when current owner Burgess Carey purchased the property in 1994. After several stages of renovations, the home is now available for short-term rentals. PHOTOS FURNISHED

With four bedrooms and four bathrooms, the 4,500-square-foot lodge can host 10-15 people comfortably. Multiple decks and patios as well as a spacious yard area on the edge of the creek provide visitors with direct access to the pristine Boone Creek and a spectacular view from the bottom of the gorge. The home was built in 1981 by former property owner Sam Whitehead, who abandoned the property by 1984. It’s rumored to have been a hideaway affiliated with the notorious Lexington crime saga outlined in Sally Denton’s 1989 book “The Bluegrass Conspiracy.”

Walking into an upstairs room that was formerly hidden from the rest of the house and has been converted to a fourth bedroom, Carey explained that at the time he purchased the property, the room was “completely enclosed with no windows and no skylight. It was all plywood and had outlets going all the way across the wall.” “From downstairs it felt like a vaulted ceiling,” he said, “and if you look at the roofline outside, it looks like it matches what’s down there. Without this [newly added] window giving it away, you’d never know this room was here.” Today, while the skeleton of the home, its original stone foundation and stone floors, and many original fixtures from the first iteration of the lodge – including a striking wooden shelving system in the main floor library/ den – remain, much of the home has been completely gutted and rebuilt to address water damage and other natural damage. Carey and his team chose to keep the original floor plan intact and to incorporate some of the original countertops and fixtures, including a 1980sera jacuzzi tub. The kitchen is perhaps the most changed part of the lodge, remodeled to be functional for caterers and small events held on the property.

The lodge features a blend of original touches – such as the stone floors and the floor-to-ceiling library shelves pictured above – with new fixtures and furnishings, designed for comfort and functionality. PHOTOS FURNISHED

Carey’s wife, Sarah, took the lead on the furnishings, which help the lodge feel both warm and inviting while also rustic and connected to the outdoors. The lodge remains available year-round at a discounted rate to annual members of the Boone Creek Angler’s Club. A short-term membership option is also available for those whom an annual membership wouldn’t work, such as visitors from out of town, and includes access to the property for fishing and hiking. Carey emphasized the lodge is not intended to be utilized as a party house but rather as a means for responsible parties to access and enjoy the area’s amenities. It’s a great location for staff retreats or for quick family getaways geared toward relaxing amidst nature, he said. Notably, access to the house is only available via a very steep and rocky driveway that requires renters to have a vehicle with fourwheel drive. A cabin on the property, which is smaller, more rustic and easier to access, sleeps four and is available to rent on AirBnB. For more information, visit www.boonecreekoutdoors.com/lodge-rental. ■

Apple Cider Cake with Bourbon Caramel

recipeS and photoS BY theresa stanley

Quality time in the kitchen spent mixing ingredients and kneading dough can present the opportunity to relax, ponder and reflect, often helping one take stock of more than what’s in the pantry. Having gone through more than a few recipes during the extra time I’ve had on my hands this year, here are two lessons that have emerged: Eat the cake. Drink the good bourbon. Hammering out this recipe offers ample opportunities for both, while providing a great outlet for local apple cider during its shining season.

The design of the Bundt cake pan allows more of the mixture to touch the surface of the pan than with a traditional round cake pan, helping to provide faster and more even heat distribution during baking.

Apple Cider Cake Ingredients: • 2 ½ cups flour • 2 large eggs • 1 ¼ cups sugar • 1 cup apple cider • ¾ cup unsweetened applesauce • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, premium • 1 tablespoon bourbon • ¾ teaspoon baking powder • ¼ teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon salt • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon cardamom • ¼ teaspoon cloves

5 BR | 4.5 BA | 8,170 sq.ft. | $1,499,900 Exquisite workmanship and detail in this Colonial Williamsburg home built by Greg Martelli. Built-in corner cupboards, window seats, raised panel details, and gracious crown moldings add the charm to ample living spaces and bedrooms. Privacy abounds in the tree graced back living space creating a perfect island of relaxation in this exclusive neighborhood.

Method: Heat oven to 350 degrees. To a medium bowl, add flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. Whisk and set aside. To a small bowl add cider, applesauce, vanilla and bourbon. Stir and set aside. In a large bowl (or mixer), beat butter and sugar on medium speed until fluffy. On a low speed, add eggs, one at a time. Alternate adding flour mixture and cider mixture to the butter, sugar and egg mixture, in three batches, ending with the flour and mixing only until incorporated. Prepare a 10-cup Bundt cake pan, or multiple mini-Bundt cake pans, by spraying generously with nonstick spray. Spoon mixture evenly into pan(s). To ensure a level cake, reduce air bubbles in mixture by tapping pan(s) on the counter. Smooth if needed. For a large Bundt cake, bake 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean and the cake springs back when touched. For smaller pans, bake 33-38 minutes following the same guidelines. Remove from the oven, cool on a rack for 10 minutes. Place a piece of parchment paper on the top of cake pan(s), place rack on top of paper and invert the cake(s) holding steady. Release the cake from the pan. Allow to cool fully before glazing with bourbon caramel (recipe below). Store cake in an airtight container for up to two days.

Bourbon Caramel Ingredients: • 1 cup sugar • ½ cup unsalted butter • 1 ½ tablespoons bourbon • ¼ teaspoon salt Method: To a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, add sugar. Heat sugar for three minutes. Whisk continuously as sugar begins to melt. When sugar is completely melted, add butter. Whisk vigorously until butter is melted. Remove from heat. Add heavy cream, whisking continuously. Add bourbon and whisk until combined. Allow mixture to cool, stirring occasionally. n

DRINK OF THE MONTH

Dalgona Coffee recipeS and photoS BY theresa stanley

Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • 2 tablespoons cold water • 1 ½ tablespoons espresso powder (instant coffee will work, too; increase to 2 tablespoons) • Milk (barista’s choice) Method: To a medium bowl, add all ingredients. Whisk by hand or mixer until ingredients become frothy; approximately four minutes with the mixer and eight minutes by hand. Fill a glass mostly full with ice and milk. Place two large dollops of frothy coffee on top of the milk. Stir gently to mix, if desired. Variations:

Whipping coffee might not be your typical method of preparing your caffeine fix in your own kitchen, but as people spend more time at home this year, this drink’s popularity is growing. Without fancy equipment, you can become a seasoned barista in just a few minutes, creating an at-home café experience. Dalgona translates into “honeycomb toffee” in Korean, and this coffee mixture holds froth longer than a latte or cappuccino. Put on your favorite coffeehouse music, and whisk yourself away in daydreams of your favorite international café. Recipe serves 2-3. Cheers!

Make it seasonal. Infuse fall into your coffee by adding a dash of pumpkin spice to the mixture before whisking. Make it hot. Eliminate ice and use steamed milk. A hot cup of fancyish coffee on a cool morning is something to savor. Make it boozy. Like a little kick to your coffee? Add a teaspoon (or two) of dark rum to your glass of milk before layering the whipped coffee. This variation is delicious with iced milk or steamed. n

But as carefully coordinated events, designed to meet the social distancing guidelines, have started to reemerge, we are slowly working to incorporate this feature back into our publication (albeit a much more abbreviated version than usual). To submit a Lexington-area event for consideration, email info@tadoo.com with the subject line “EVENT SUBMISSION.”

LexPhil in Your Neighborhood Series. October; exact dates TBA. While details were still being finalized for this series as we sent this issue to print, Lexington Philharmonic has released preliminary details for two series: an outdoor series where LexPhil musicians will perform 10-15 min concerts at different locations around four Lexington neighborhoods, and two limited capacity concerts to take place at the historic Loudoun House. The events are set to take place throughout the month of October; visit www.lexphil.org for dates and more info. Mecca Dance Studio presents “The Woodland Art Faux.” Oct. 3. This live, multi-cultural drum and dance performance, featuring African hand drumming and dances from the Middle East, India and Spain, will showcase dancers from Rakadu Dance Theatre, Shisha Dance Collective, Tripp Bratton’s drummers and Shree School. The outdoor event, a nod to Rakadu’s annual performance at Woodland Art Fair (cancelled this year due to COVID-19), requires that the audience wear masks upon arrival and when moving around file photo the space. Gates open at 6 p.m. with showtime slated for 7:30 p.m. MoonDance Amphitheatre, 1152 Monarch St. Tickets are available at www.meccadance.com. Shaker Village: Music on the Lawn. The Burl Parking Lot Shows Amidst the pandemic, The Burl has taken to presenting live music in a new format: a safe, socially distanced series of outdoor shows in the venue’s parking lot. For these shows, no individual tickets are available; rather, tickets are sold by the table (primarily in groupings of six). Tables are spaced out safely in the parking lot, and patrons are asked to stick with their groups and remain six feet away from guests who are not in their group. The Burl is located at 375 Thompson Road. More info and a full list of upcoming events is available at www.theburlky/ events. Katie Toupin. Oct. 2. The former member of Louisville band Houndmouth has been making a name for herself as a solo artist in recent years, currently fresh off the release of her 2019 debut solo LP “Magnetic Moves.” Toupin will be joined by the Nashville-based psychedelic blues band The Minks, led by fiery vocalist Nikki Barber. 7 p.m. Lost Dog Street Band. Oct. 3-4. The popular Americana trio led by the husband-and-wife combo of Benjamin Tod and Ashley Mae return to The Burl for a two-night run of shows featuring the group’s repertoire of music bursting at the seams with melancholy. 7 p.m. (both nights).
