exington artist Wylie Caudill has one of the best studio spaces an artist could imagine: the great outdoors. Noted for a whimsical style characterized by lots of color and texture, the mural artist can often be found high on a lift working on a new “canvas” that can range from a 30-foot side of a building to a residential retaining wall. (He also does interior work for businesses and individuals.) At age 25, Caudill has been working as a full-time artist for fewer than three years but has already created his mark on Lexington, with murals adorning the walls of several high-profile local businesses, including Soundbar, the Distillery District’s Crank & Boom Craft Ice Cream and the Kentucky for Kentucky warehouse/Kentucky Fun Mall on Loudon Avenue. Few places in Lexington, however, showcase the transformative power that a large-scale mural can have on a space more effectively than the downtown courtyard of the multibusiness concept The Grove. Located on the corner of Main and Upper streets, the space has recently been transformed into a lush urban oasis, thanks in no small part to a striking three-story mural installation by Caudill. To step off the busy street and enter the courtyard through the Upper Street garden gate entrance is to be transported to a different world. Tables, chairs, potted plants and twinkle lights dot the intimate outdoor space, which is flanked on one side by a massive mural that encapsulates the feeling of being enmeshed in a grove of trees in a magical, fairy tale forest. Owner Avena Kiely explained she had always wanted a mural in the space to help unite the various businesses that compose The Grove, which include a wine and cocktail bar, beer garden, food truck and charcuterie business. “When we were introduced to Wylie, we knew he would come up with something wonderful,” she said. “He knew we wanted something whimsical that would bring each business into the mural.” To that end, the large moon in the mural is a nod to Luna, the vintage airstream food truck that remains permanently parked in The Grove’s courtyard. A fox and crow represent characters from Aesop’s Fables, in tribute to The Grove’s in-house wine and charcuterie business, Fable. As for Harvey’s, the longstanding bar that serves as an anchor for The Grove, the rabbit represents the cinematic namesake of the bar – the 1950 film “Harvey,” which stars Jimmy Stewart and centers on the friendship between his character and an invisible sixfoot-tall rabbit named Harvey.

Caudill’s prominent mural in the courtyard of The Grove serves to help unite the various elements of the multi-concept business, which houses a food truck, charcuterie business, wine and cocktail bar and more.

“I can’t imagine The Grove’s Beer Garden without the mural now,” said Kiely, who added that people stop by all day long, even outside business hours, to take look or snap photos. “He really added magic to our downtown space.” Liza Betz, the owner of neighboring business Failte Irish Imports, commented on how much the mural brightened the block. “It was so exciting to watch Wylie create the mural,” she said. “I love looking at it every day.”

Originally from Cynthiana, Caudill comes from a line of artists, including a grandmother who was a portrait and landscape artist and other relatives who are quilters, musicians and actors. But despite that family background and even his own talent for drawing, which was revealed at an early age, he says he initially resisted following an artistic path. “I’m a bit rebellious,” he said with a laugh. “I sort of denied art for a while and wanted to move in another direction.” Caudill studied broadcasting and electronic media at Eastern Kentucky University but soon realized he was not passionate about that field. After working on the sets of several movies that were being filmed in Kentucky, he briefly considered a career in filmmaking but reconsidered after realizing the limitations of related opportunities in Kentucky. “Art kept coming back around in my life,” he explained. On a lark, Caudill started making chalk drawings around campus. While not always well received by the administration, his work was very popular with the students. He began tagging his drawings on Instagram, and his followers quickly grew from a few hundred to thousands. He didn’t realize it at the time, but his calling as a mural artist was revealing itself. After graduating, Caudill began working for Kentucky for Kentucky, a local company that creates often-cheeky Kentuckythemed merchandise and is known for having coined the catchphrase “Kentucky Kicks Ass.” A 2019 assignment had him painting a rainbow mural outside the company’s warehouse, and when the company was contacted by the owner of the Frankfortbased restaurant The Stave, who was seeking a Kentucky Kicks Ass mural for her restaurant, the company knew who to send.

Featuring golden tobacco leaves in Caudill’s signature repetitive style, this residential mural in Lexington was the artist’s first ceiling painting.

Caudill enjoyed that project so much he knew he wanted to do more. “I posted some stuff to my Instagram, and it took off quickly,” he said, adding, “I can’t credit social media enough for how quickly people were aware of my work.” Inquiries rolled in and his phone started buzzing. Caudill says while his parents always encouraged his creativity, they had some initial concerns about him taking the leap to full-time artist. Caudill’s father, who works in the financial industry, felt compelled to weigh in with some practical advice. “My dad made out a budget outlining what it would take to cover all necessities,” Caudill said. “I think he was trying to point out it wouldn’t be a good idea to quit my job, but I met those financial goals my first year.” He added, “I just wanted to pay my bills and be able to eat, but it has turned into a sustaining career that I love. It’s incredible.” And Caudill shows no sign of slowing down. If you follow his Instagram or his popular TikTok, you can watch him making magic all over central Kentucky – on a ladder, paintbrush in hand, making magic for now and for generations to come.

11/16/21 10:32 AM

Lexington mural artist Wylie Caudill recently took some time to answer some questions for Smiley Pete writer Celeste Lewis. When did you know you wanted to be an artist? In 2019, when I figured out I could start paying the bills with my talent. It was a little scary quitting my job and taking the leap to full-time artist, but I have zero regrets. When did you begin working large scale and making murals? I started making some large chalk art in college around 2015. By late 2019, I had done my first large-scale mural with paint, and I was hooked. What are some of the challenges you run into as a mural artist? Every mural is a new challenge, from locations, to weather, to the content I’m painting. I’ll never stop running into problems, but I guess that’s what keeps it interesting. Is there a dream project you haven’t taken on yet? Something out of state! Traveling would really add a new layer to the experience! What’s something in your work you can’t live without? Color! I love color and lots of it. I would never describe myself as subtle. Tell me about your process. Break it down for us a little. I start with the location. How is the wall shaped; how can I orient the artwork to best suit it on the wall? Then I usually start designing on my iPad. I draw things out over top of a photo of the wall on an app called Procreate. Then I start painting. I prefer free handing everything I can. The grid technique is most useful. I definitely prefer brush painting as opposed to spray painting, but I use both sometimes. My style allows me to not have to project a lot [a technique used by many mural artists to project the image on the wall and trace and paint it]. I like to get right to the wall and get going. What inspires you? Where do you get ideas? This is vague, but, the internet. I’m inspired by things I see online mostly. A wide range of imagery appeals to me from Renaissance art to video game animation. I also get a lot of inspiration from my clients. People usually have given some thought to a mural, and it’s fun to partner on their vision and work out details. What’s the nicest comment you’ve received about your work? The compliments that mean the most to me are the ones I accidentally overhear. The things people say when they think I can’t hear are the most genuine. So, when they are good, it feels wonderful.

PHOTO FURNISHED

This studio painting was commissioned by Mountain Dew earlier this year, in conjunction with the brand’s new watermelon flavor. Caudill was hired as an influencer by the brand to post about it on the day the flavor was released.

What do you hope people get out of your work? I want it to be simple. I want it to make people happy and maybe a little astounded. It’s an experience. I hope they walk up to the art and say “wow!” Are there other art forms you enjoy? I really enjoy acting and set design. I love Shakespeare, and I perform every summer at the Appalachian Shakespeare Center at EKU. I’ve gotten to appear in every production they have done. I keep my eye out for local productions that sound like fun, and I audition here and there. Do you have a favorite place in Lexington? Broomwagon. Lexington has become a mural town. What role do you think the arts play in Lexington’s future? This is a big question, and I think the only answer I have is that it is our job as artists to continue to create and give back to the community as long as the community will have us. Lexington has wel-

comed public art with open arms, and I hope that continues. Who are some of your favorite artists? I follow many mural artists. Kalulfart is a favorite. I also really like Kelsey Montague, one of the first interactive mural artists. Her wings murals are very interesting public art. How important is social media for artists? What social media platforms work best for you? It is by far the most valuable platform for connecting with new clients and for people to find me and see what I do. I credit Instagram for how I have been able to grow so quickly in two years. What’s next for you? I am working on painting a room in my house, top to bottom. The entire room will be painted. It’s the first time I have painted something 100%. Also, I’ve got a big and exciting project coming up at The Greyline. I’m doing multiple murals both interior and exterior. Stay tuned for that! n

“In Bruges” (2008) Selected by Austin Rathbone, online learning specialist, Eastern Kentucky University Have you ever travelled for the holidays and felt trapped by your surroundings and circumstances, just waiting for it to be over already? Set in a picturesque European town during Christmastime, ”In Bruges” suggests that maybe the prison you really find yourself in is one of your own creation. A story of redemption and forgiveness in which lessons are (sort of) learned and hatchets are buried, in a manner of speaking. A crudely hilarious, late-night holiday tale. “The Star Wars Holiday Special” (television) Selected by Bo List, producing artistic director, AthensWest Theatre Company

”In Bruges” is a dark comedy starring Colin Ferrell, Brendan Gleason and Ralph Fiennes, set in the picturesque Belgian town of Bruges during Christmastime.

hat better way to unlock the holiday spirit than to pour a tall glass of nog and binge-watch a mother lode of Christmas movies? With so many holiday movies out there to choose from, terrible and wonderful alike, we decided to tap on the most hardcore of local film nerds to unearth a list of outside-the-box holiday movie recommendations. Compiled by the Friends of the Kentucky Theatre* Stream Team#, this list features something for everyone – from the warmest and fuzziest to the Scroogiest among us.

*Friends of the Kentucky Theatre is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping restore, preserve and enhance the historic Kentucky Theatre. Earlier this year, it was announced the group would take over management of the theatre, which has been closed since October 2020, when longtime management group The Kentucky Theatre Group terminated its lease with the city following low ticket sales during the pandemic. Friends of the Kentucky Theatre, which formed in 2012, is working diligently to reopen the theatre – if you are interested in helping, visit www.givebutter. com/ReopenTheKentucky, and keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming article in this publication about the future of the theatre. #Friends of the Kentucky Theatre’s “Stream Team” is a group of local film fanatics and Kentucky Theatre enthusiasts who have been providing suggestions on the organization’s website for films to stream in the absence of the Kentucky Theatre. Visit www.friendsofthekentucky.org/streamteam for more (non-holiday) streaming recommendations.

This is cheap garbage from beginning to end – and you cannot look away. Featuring a cheesy assortment of ‘70s TV/film icons (Harvey Korman! Bea Arthur! Art Carney!) and oddball additions like Jefferson Starship and Diahann Carroll, along with most of the entire “Star Wars” cast, this train wreck follows our favorite star-hoppers as they celebrate “Life Day,” in a debacle George Lucas tried to prevent (but couldn’t!). God-awful. Don’t miss it. “Fanny and Alexander” (1982) Selected by Brian McCall, procurement & warehouse liaison at eCampus Christmas Eve 1907...We meet the Ekdahl family, full of love, joy and some eccentricities. Amid lush furnishings and a lavish feast, we watch these vivid, engaging people in celebration. There’s a brief miserable marriage, a theater production, a ghost. So much about family and the wonders of life from the children’s perspective come from this world created by director Ingmar Bergman, in which the utmost certainty exists side-by-side with spirits and magic and a gallery of remarkable characters. In addition to the cinematic version, a four-part television version was also released. “Better Watch Out” (2016) Selected by Edd MacKey, president of the Lexington Fashion Collaborative What could be more of a piece of cake than babysitting during the holidays in the suburbs? Ashley

(Olivia DeJonge) thought this would be the easiest holiday gig ever. Wrong! Everyone remembers the antics from “Home Alone,” but when you’re home with children and it’s an actual home invasion, the game plan is over-the-top since – less about toys and games and more about surviving a night of terror. One viewer said, “While the film is more cartoonish than psychologically believable, it’s willing to go to some genuinely uncomfortable places.” This is exactly what makes this horror a surprisingly funny and outlandish holiday treat. “Fitzwilly” (1967) Selected by Lucy Jones, Lexington Film League I’m on constant lookout for overlooked holiday films to supplement my seasonal viewing. Last year, I stumbled upon the holy grail of forgotten Christmas classics: “Fitzwilly.” Any description of the plot would involve spoilers, so simply trust me when I say you want to take this ride. Set in New York City, the film includes romance, heists, comedy, glamour, gorgeous holiday department-store displays, familial tenderness, a dynamite score and one devastatingly charming Dick Van Dyke. Enough said! “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999) Selected by Max Morris, CD Central employee Though Stanley Kubrick’s controversial final film may not scream “yuletide joy,” the film’s Christmastime-in-New-York set-

ting, every corner awash in the hypnotic glow of twinkling lights and tacky tinsel, sets a perfectly dreamlike stage for the psychosexual journey of Dr. Bill Harford. The film’s holiday spirit extends beyond mere aesthetic purposes, however; its critique on the depravity of the ruling class and the transactional nature of our relationships makes the film a sly satire of the season’s hyperconsumerism. “The Family Stone” (2005) Selected by Sarah Combs, author and Carnegie Center instructor I love how this movie captures the in-between moments of the holidays: quiet kitchen after a chaotic meal, last wine glass set rim-down to dry; grown daughter asleep in TV glow, head resting on the lap of her pregnant sister. Like the movie itself, the family at its heart is flawed: “What’s so great about you guys?” Sarah Jessica Parker’s outsider character wails. “Nothing,” says Diane Keaton’s Sybil Stone, “it’s just that we’re all we’ve got.” And there it is: familial love, perfectly distilled. “The Poseidon Adventure” (1973) Selected by Sean Anderson, filmmaker This 1973 Irwin Allen production, directed by Ronald Neame, makes perfect viewing for the holidays, in an era when every turn of the calendar bodes disaster. It’s a topsy-turvy New Year’s Eve party with a cast of stars – well, a few stars and several meteors – on a

of sherry. In the end, kindness and tolerance win.

“Nativity” (2009) Selected by Steph Fitch, Film Studies coordinator, Bluegrass Community & Technical College

The definitive British film version of “A Christmas Carol” with Alastair Sim as the miserly Scrooge, now 70 years old, retains an extraordinary old England feel with its stark blackand-white imagery. For a story so familiar and shopworn, this telling retains all the Dickensian essentials, especially qualities of grace, mercy and redemption – while remaining, above all, a ghost story. (The film was released as “A Christmas Carol” in the United States.)

“Nativity” is the best Christmas movie because of its care-free absurdity. It’s genuine chaos that everyone has experienced and can relate to. It is hilarious at one moment and heartwarming at the next, and to top it all off, it features a death slide and BOB. This is a must-see film every Christmas. If you are still not convinced, maybe Mr. Poppy, the British Christmas-jumperwearing cousin to Uncle Eddie, can convince you. “The Bishop’s Wife” (1970) Selected by Stuart Horodner, director of the University of Kentucky Art Museum

This one, based on a book by L. Frank Baum (author of the “Oz” series), takes things into the Santasphere! Baby Santa is found in the snowy woods by a group of immortals who look like ex-members of Slipknot, is raised by a lioness, and does battle with Gwar. In short, Santa is metal AF. n

Creating a Showstopping Holiday Porch

W

hether you have a sprawling front porch or a small doorstep, there are so many creative ways to transform it into a showstopping entrance for the holiday season. Adding any combination of lights, garland, small trees and planters, lanterns, wreaths and rugs will elevate your Christmas curb appeal. Deck out your entrance this holiday season to be as cozy and welcoming as possible by following these simple tips. Note: Since these items will be exposed to the elements and left outside, I like to be as thrifty as possible and often find pieces to use at peddlers malls, garage sales and secondhand stores. • Before beginning, decide on your overall theme and color scheme for the porch so everything is cohesive. This will help you shop and keep everything looking pulled together throughout. You can work with the existing exterior colors of your home or choose a bright and colorful theme or try something classic and simple. You can also allow your theme to be inspired by a favorite find – maybe a special wreath or doormat. • No matter the size of your porch, a wreath on the door and garland around the door are a great place to start. Whether faux or real, pre-lit or plain, you can’t go wrong with a simple winter greenery wreath or garland. I like to add a little embellishment to my wreath by hanging it by a pretty ribbon and tying on some Christmas bells. The same applies to the garland around our door. This can be as simple or elaborate as you like, and you can really customize it to your other decor with ribbons, florals, fillers, ornaments and more! I prefer to have lights on my garland, as it really highlights the entrance nicely and adds a nice glow. You can also add wreaths and garlands to your windows, railings or other areas, too. • Just like when decorating the inside of a home, I like to begin by placing the largest objects first. It helps to have some kind of tall plant, sign or statement piece on each side of the door to build the rest of your decor off of and to help balance the visual weight so that everything isn’t close to the ground. (If you have a smaller porch, one side of the door will definitely suffice for this.) I used two pre-lit outdoor Christmas trees for each side of my entrance and placed them inside my usual porch planters. These really anchor the entrance area nicely and are about threequarters of the total height of my door, for reference.

A wreath on the door and garland around it are the easiest places to start with your porch decor. Utilizing planters you already have, along with thrifted lanterns, can go a long way in adding holiday cheer to your front porch. PHOTOS BY EMILY RIDDLE

• Lanterns and pre-lit trees are easy ways to fill in the porch decor. I collect pre-lit trees in various sizes and sprinkle them throughout, in various thrifted and repurposed planters. (I don’t add any ornaments or decor to my trees – I leave them bare with the lights for a more natural look.) To light up your lanterns, you can use battery-operated candles, real pillar candles, citronella candles or battery-operated twinkle lights. Place these wherever you have a hole or need a filler item, like beside a planter, next to a door or on the side of a step.

This year make the holidays

MERRY & BRIGHT

A stack or bucket of firewood is a great and simple way to add a festive holiday touch to your front porch.

• If you have any chairs, benches or seating on your porch you can add a holiday pillow or two or a throw blanket for some fun pattern, cozy texture and color. • A stack or bucket of firewood or firewood holder filled with firewood is very holiday appropriate and another inexpensive and easy way to decorate your porch for the season. If you have an odd space that just needs a little something, this is the perfect way to fill it in. • Create variation and depth by incorporating items like old wooden crates, boxes, tables or stools as risers so you can place things at different heights and they aren’t all sitting directly on the porch. This is an extra step that can (literally) elevate your overall setup. You can play around with which items you place on the crates versus on the ground until you find the perfect balance. • A fun doormat can really add a pop of color to your space. I actually layered two doormats on top of each other (the bottom one being just a little larger) for an extra dose of pattern and texture. A great way to make more of a statement is to layer a cute holiday doormat over a larger rug (usually 2-by-3-feet or 3-by-5-feet, depending on size of your porch). I kept in mind the overall color scheme of my wreath and plants when choosing the rugs, so that everything would coordinate and blend. My porch is covered, so I’m able to use a vintage indoor rug underneath for layering, but you can also find lots of washable, outdoor options in the sizes listed above.

Holiday Garland Tips

N

othing dresses up a fireplace and makes a statement like a stunning holiday garland with all the trimmings. I love to put together layered holiday garlands that are customized to fit the other decor and overall color scheme in the room. Think outside the box from traditional red and green – there are so many unique ideas and options that can match any style or decor! Tips for making a layered holiday garland that pops: • Use a relatively plain “base” garland that extends the full length of your mantle to build on. My garland actually has six total garlands layered together for a full and dramatic look. I chose to use the off-white, thicker garland as my base, layering the gold magnolia on top of that and then adding the thinner, more decorative garlands like the wood beads and pompoms as my final layers. You can manipulate, bend and pull through some of the branches from the base garland to make the garlands look more like one. • Incorporate strategic draping so your garlands have a natural feel and movement. I use cup hooks to hold my garland; you can also use command hooks if your garlands are lighter. I place three cup hooks on the mantle: one on each end and one in the middle. I drape the garland in between the hooks so it makes a shape similar to a W. I like to drape more on one side to make it slightly asymmetrical, but this is not necessary if you prefer a more symmetrical look or don’t have garlands long enough to drape extra on the side! • Choose a few decorative garlands that fit your decor style to weave in and layer on top: Wood bead garlands, tassel or pompom garlands, floral garlands, ornament garlands and felt garlands are just a few examples. You can drape these similar to your base garlands or drop them slightly higher or lower for a little contrast. (As an alternative to layering lots of decorative garlands, you can add embellishments by sticking in some floral picks, hanging ornaments on your garland, tying or weaving in some pretty ribbon or adding natural elements like fresh greenery or pinecones!)

A homemade garland with lots of textures, colors and layers that fit your existing interior decor is a is a great way to add some personalized decor to your living room. PHOTOS BY EMILY RIDDLE

• Add some battery-powered wire lights for a subtle glow without all the cords showing – I stuck my battery boxes inside the stockings to disguise them. These are such an easy way to add a little magical glow even in areas where you don’t have an electrical outlet.

Holiday Bedroom Decor

I

f you’re looking to go the extra mile with your holiday spirit, extend the decor to your bedroom! There’s nothing cozier and more magical than a holiday bedroom filled with all the warm textures, twinkle lights and greenery. No matter what kind of decor you have in your bedroom regularly, you can transform your space into the cozy Christmas bedroom of your dreams with just a few simple additions and swaps. Here’s how I like to create my cozy holiday bedroom look each year: Pile on the cozy textures. Your bed is the centerpiece of the room, so naturally this is a key place to add holiday touches. A large wintery blanket in Christmasy colors, jewel tones or wintery textures like faux fur, knit or wool, and a couple holidaythemed pillows, can go long way. Another way to add a little holiday flair to your bedding is to add or swap out your usual quilt for a heavier flannel, plaid velvet quilt in a beautiful holiday color or print.

You can up the cozy factor in your bedroom without going over the top, by adding a few holiday blankets, pillows and pre-lit trees to your space.

Add a wreath over the bed. This is such a simple way to add holiday cheer to your bedroom and can also create a great focal point for the room. If you already have a mirror or piece of artwork over the bed, don’t be afraid to layer this right on top.

Sprinkle holiday greenery throughout. Greenery garlands (faux or real) can be added around your headboard, on top of a dresser, around a mirror or even around windows. Simple winter greenery without any embellishments is classic and can be used year after year, but you can also customize your garlands and greenery to fit the theme and colors of your room by adding additional floral picks, ornaments, fillers, warm white string lights and more. Add a Christmas tree (or two!). A Christmas tree is one of the easiest ways to add a magical glow and cozy feel to any bedroom. If you’re tight on space, opt for a pencil-style tree, which can fit just about anywhere. My bedroom Christmas trees are a very affordable option from Michaels stores, and I stuck them inside of a basket to make them a little more unique. Besides lights, you don’t have to even worry about decorating these either – I added some simple woodbead garland, but other than that, just left it simple and bare. Add any of these items and you’ll be on your way to a cozier Christmas bedroom that you can enjoy throughout the holiday season and continue to add to year after year. n

DRINK OF THE MONTH

OBC Eggnog

(Holiday Party Recipe) RECIPE AND PHOTO BY OBC KITCHEN

Few beverages are as distinctly correlated with the winter holiday season as egg nog. Love it or hate it, this is pretty much the only time of year to consume it. Making the nog from scratch certainly ups the ante, and this recipe, provided by our friends from the Bluegrass Hospitality Group restaurant OBC Kitchen, is not as challenging as one might think. Create a batch of this boozy goodness for your next holiday gathering, whether for friends, family or co-workers, and you will be the talk – and the life – of the party. Recipe yields approximately 18 cocktails.

Ingredients: • 18 eggs • 1 ½ cups sugar • ½ teaspoon salt • 7 cups whole milk • 2 cups heavy whipping cream • 1 ½ cups Jim Beam bourbon • ½ cup Captain Morgan rum • ½ cup Goslings Dark Rum • 1 ¼ teaspoons cinnamon Method: Separate eggs and beat yolks with ¾ cups of sugar. Mix in milk, vanilla, bourbon, rum, cream, salt and cinnamon. Chill mixture for two to four hours. Beat egg white with ¾ cups sugar, creating stiff peaks. Fold egg white into nog. Enjoy! n

Baker’s note: Cake pops get their soft, gooey texture by crumbling a pre-baked cake with icing before dipping into white chocolate. These gingerbread cake pops utilize gingerbread cake and a cream cheese icing. Recipe yields around 30 cake pops.

For the cake: Ingredients: • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour • 2 ¼ teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoons ground ginger • 1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon • ¾ teaspoon ground cloves • ½ teaspoon nutmeg • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature • ¼ cup vegetable oil • ¾ cup granulated sugar • 2⁄3 cup packed dark brown sugar • 3 large eggs, room temperature • ¾ cup molasses • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 cup whole milk or buttermilk Method: • Heat the oven to 350 degrees, and grease either three six-inch round baking pans or two nine-inch round baking pans. • Whisk together dry ingredients in a large bowl and set aside. • In the bowl of a stand mixer (or a regular mixing bowl, if using a hand mixer), beat the butter, vegetable oil and sugar together on medium until fluffy. • Reduce speed to low and add eggs one at a time. Mix until just incorporated, making sure to scrape the sides of bowl as needed. Do not over-mix. • Add in molasses and vanilla extract. • Alternate adding the buttermilk and the dry-ingredient mixture, making sure to start and end with the dry ingredients. • Pour batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for approximately 20-30 minutes. Bake time will depend on the size of your pans. The cakes will be done baking when a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. • Turn pans out and cool cakes on wire racks completely. This may take a couple of hours.

For the icing: Ingredients: • 1 eight-ounce package of cream cheese • 1 stick of unsalted butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Approximately 16 ounces powdered sugar

Method: • Beat the butter and cream cheese together until fluffy. • Add in the vanilla extract. • Add in the powdered sugar a little bit at a time. You want your icing to have structure but not be too stiff to mix with the cake. (Note: If you have added too much powdered sugar, you can thin the icing by adding a little bit of heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time.) Additional supplies needed: • White chocolate for dipping the pops (I use Merckens or Ghirardelli white chocolate wafers) • Styrofoam Christmas tree (this display used a 9-by-2.5-inch tree) • Six-inch cake pop or lollipop sticks (for dipping) • Toothpicks (for sticking the pops to the display tree) Assembling the cake pops: • Crumble your cake either in the bowl of a stand mixer on low or with your hands. When it is all broken up into small crumbles, add about ¼ cup icing. You want your cake pop mixture to have a texture similar to playdough. • Roll out the cake pops into balls, about one tablespoon in size.

• Melt down white dipping chocolate. The amount of chocolate needed will vary depending on how many cake pops are being dipped. A good rule of thumb is approximately eight ounces of melted choco late per dozen cake pops. To color your chocolate for festive decorating, wait until the melted chocolate is closer to room temperature before adding gel food coloring in small quantities. (If you add too much too soon, the temperature disparity can cause your chocolate to seize, or harden and turn clumpy.) • Use lollipop or cake pop sticks to dip the cake pops into the chocolate. Top with sprinkles or use food coloring to decorate, if desired. I dip the ends of the lollipop sticks (about one inch) into the chocolate before inserting them into the cake pop balls. Some of the chocolate will pool around the stick; once it has hardened, dip the pops fully into the chocolate. (The extra step of dipping the cake pop sticks helps to ensure the cake pops won’t fall off the sticks.) Top with sprinkles if you’d like. • Let the chocolate harden over the course of a few minutes (about five minutes) at room temperature. I use a cake pop stand for this. • To create the Christmas tree cake pop display, take the pops off the sticks after the chocolate has hardened and attach to Styrofoam tree using toothpicks. I stick the toothpicks into the tree first, then line up the toothpick with the existing hole in the pops from the cake pop sticks. n
