LOCAL CULINARY NEWS TO USE BY SHANNON CLINTON

#1 on the Christmas Wish List

I

t’s all smiles with the launch of a new gourmet grilled cheese food truck, Say Cheese.

The food truck, based in Versailles but traveling all over Central Kentucky, is operated by couple Dakotah and Nick Frank. “Nick has always loved to cook for people, and I have served and bartended for years,” she said. “We thought combining those passions and starting something of our own would be fun.” Her favorite menu item is the Fully Loaded grilled cheese, which is “like a loaded baked potato in sandwich form.” Other varieties include the “Say Plain Jane” with cheddar and Colby jack cheese on potato bread, and at the other end of the spectrum, the “Say Here Piggy” with potato bread, smoked gouda, and pulled pork BBQ. The truck will set up at offices, events and other destinations.

In other local food news: Grounded All Day Cafe has opened in Meadowthorpe at 106 Burke Rd. Recent offerings include a lavender caramel iced coffee and food items like hand-rubbed spiced smoked salmon and honey, lemon, and chives in the cream cheese spread for its featured bagels from Southland Bagels. Continuing the local theme, coffee from Nate’s Coffee and ice cream from Sav’s Chill are served here, too. El Charro Tacos & Tequila Bar has opened at The Lex on S. Broadway, with barbacoa tacos, specialty drinks and more. Mercantile Coffee & Feed as of press time was coming soon to downtown Nicholasville as a coffee shop with breakfast items, bakery treats and lunch bites, and a retail boutique space. Bubba Grub in Nicholasville has been whimsically painted inside and out and looked to be nearly completed in late October. The eatery at 1001 Elizabeth St. will feature burgers, wings, fish and milkshakes. Big Kahuna Hawaiian BBQ’s expanded second-floor dining room has opened on Liberty Road. Golden Flame Hot Wings was set to open in November on Rojay Drive near Fayette Mall. With the tagline “serving the nation’s best wings and fries since 1994,” the franchise is based in Aurora, Colorado, and has sauce varieties including lemon pepper and mountain berry as well as fries, wraps, sandwiches and more. Panchitos Ice Cream’s Nicholasville Road location has closed. ■ Have a food- or beverage-related update to share? Please email info@smileypete.com.

Lexington’s vintage scene is bustling, and Street Scene (pictured here and located on Regency road) is one of the city’s longest-running vintage shops. FILE PHOTO

ESSENTIAL VINTAGE SHOPS Lexington’s collection of vintage shops has ballooned in recent years, with Instagram helping increase online sales and visibility for individual vintage vendors, an increasing number of whom have branched out to open their own brick-and-mortar shops following success as online retailers. Not only do vintage shops support the concepts of sustainability and recycling, but they are also a way to honor history and to provide unique conversation pieces to our homes or wardrobes. On the following pages, we’ve outlined a handful of our favorite local vintage shops, some of which have been around for over a decade and others that have only opened recently. When doing your holiday shopping, any of these spots would be a great stop if you’re looking for a a unique one-of-a-kind gift for that person in your life who has everything. Cold Collection 367 Southland Dr. Mon.-Sat., 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sun., 12-7 p.m. coldcollectionlex

A relatively new addition to the local shopping scene, Cold Collection opened its original location, a small storefront on Waller Avenue, in 2021, before moving to a larger space on Southland Drive in recent months. What distinguishes this vintage haven from others in town is its distinct focus on modern streetwear and sneakers: vintage band t-shirts, University of Kentucky gear and other graphic tees, as well as a large selection of retro Nikes, hats, jeans and other streetwear fill the racks. “We try to make vintage, sneakers and streetwear accessible to everyone, in one convenient location,” said Trey Lewis, who coowns the shop with his partner Emilie Thomas.

A treasure trove of the highest order, Gonzo Vintage offers an eclectic mix of modern furniture, art, collectibles and home decor. Operating as a vendor for a variety of local and regional vintage markets since 2020, Gonzo opened its own independent storefront in recent months on Third Street, near the campus of Transylvania University. Owner Matt Smith takes pride in preserving history, restoring all pieces to their original factory finish before putting them on the floor. With over 2,000 square feet of storefront space filled with beautiful, interesting items, walking through the store feels a bit like walking through a museum.

The Regency Road vintage shop Street Scene Vintage opened in 2007, making it one of Lexington’s “O.G.” hubs for vintage finds. In 2020, original owners Terri Wood (who also owns the neighboring business Coffee Times) and Kathryn Wiseman passed the ownership torch to longtime employees Madison Wathen and Jillian Dunaway, who have maintained the shop’s primary focus on “wearable favorites from the 1950s to Y2K,” without making many sweeping changes since taking it on. This curated vintage consignment shop offers eclectic home decor, art, furniture, estate jewelry, antiques, oddities, collectibles and vintage fashion and gifts. Specializing in items that strike owners Anne and Kelli Helmers — sisters-in-law who also own the neighboring business Blue Moon Estate Sales — as beautiful, stylish and funky, the store, which opened in the fall of 2020, started as a simple vintage shop, expanding inventory as the owners and their team have noted needs for options for furniture and luxury-item consignment. With a vibe that Kelli Helmers describes as “eclectic maximalist,” the shop is built on a foundation of incorporating high-quality items that help impart a sense of history and beauty into a space. “There are so, so many reasons to shop vintage. It sets your style apart, and it’s so fun to tell stories about the past lives of your vintage pieces,” said Kelli Helmers.

In 1996, responding to what they felt was a lack of local retail options for high-quality “Previously Owned ProductS,” Dan and Sharon Shorr opened POPS Resale. Located in Meadowthorpe Shopping Center, this quirky and unpretentious shop has been a steadfast hub for previously loved vintage clothing, housewares, collectibles, records and other items ever since.

Central to the 6,000-square-foot shop — both literally and figuratively — is its enormous collection of both new and used vinyl records, perfect for crate diggers of every musical taste. POPS also offers a healthy selection of gently used vintage stereo gear. In the back of the store awaits a curated collection of vintage clothing, from t-shirts and jackets to dresses, costume items and more.

DRINK OF THE MONTH

French Hot Chocolate

INTRO & RECIPE BY ALEX NARRAMORE (AKA THE MISCHIEF MAKER) | PHOTOS BY ABBY LAUB

hen asked to contribute a recipe for December, I couldn't think of anything more fitting than “drinking chocolate” — also known as French hot chocolate or 'chocolat chaud.' The perfect indulgence on a cold day, it’s something to savor and warm your cold hands after a winter walk outside.

Quite different than American hot chocolate, the focus here is on the chocolate itself: Thick melted chocolate, combined with a bit of sugar and whole milk, to help balance and cut the bitterness of the chocolate. You can drink this from a cup or dip in a spoon. December, when people are feeling extra indulgent and free, is the perfect month to enjoy this indulgence; however, nothing should stop you from enjoying it all winter long on any cold day.

Ingredients: • 1 quart whole milk, cold • 2⁄3 cup water • ½ cup granulated sugar • 6½ oz. bitter chocolate (70% cacao solids — I use a 70% Lindt bar) • 2 oz. bitter chocolate (minimum 80% cacao solids — I use an 85% Lindt Bar)

Scan to purchase

Directions: Chop all of the chocolate into small pieces. In a saucepan, bring the milk, water and sugar to a boil. Remove saucepan from heat and whisk in all of the chopped chocolate. Once off the heat, either whip hot chocolate with an immersion hand blender directly in your saucepan or transfer to a stand blender and blend until combined. (Alternatively, you could just whisk it vigorously off heat, forgoing the blending if you like.) Notes: • To make a thicker hot chocolate: after adding your chopped chocolate to the milk, put the saucepan back over low heat and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly with a whisk so that the liquid does not stick to the pan. Remove from the heat and blend as indicated above. • Add a drop of hot milk to the mixture if you find the hot chocolate too thick when drinking. • Once made, this hot chocolate keeps very well in the refrigerator for up to two days. Pour into an airtight container to store and reheat in a heatproof bowl over a pan of gently simmering water. • To enjoy as a cold drink, thin the hot chocolate by adding 1¼ cups of cold milk and blend together. Add a pinch of fleur de sel (French sea salt) if you’d like. ■

The Mischief Maker GETTING TO KNOW THE CONFECTIONARY ARTIST, CAKE DESIGNER AND LIFESTYLE BLOGGER ALEX NARRAMORE, WHO OPERATES AS THE MISCHIEF MAKER

INTRO BY SARAYA BREWER INTERVIEW BY CELESTE LEWIS

lieve when looking at photos of her work, she never utilizes actual flowers in her designs. Every detail is crafted by hand.

perating as The Mischief Maker, Lexington-based cake designer and lifestyle blogger Alex Narramore merges her love for baking, gardening and art in the highly detail-oriented, award-winning sugar flowers that adorn her custom-designed cakes.

Due to the time and attention that each cake requires, Narramore — who partners with her mom, Lisa, in crafting her sugar flowers, often working out of her grandmother’s house in eastern Kentucky — typically doesn’t accept more than eight or nine sugar flower cake orders per year. In recent months, she has been focusing on a new project: an electronic newsletter sent weekly via Substack that not only highlights background details on her flowersculpting process, but also features content centering on gardening, cooking and entertaining, including recipes and videos. You can sign up to receive the newsletter at themischiefmaker.substack.com, and find more information about The Mischief Maker at www.mischiefmakercakes.com.

Meticulously modeled after actual flowers grown in her garden, each petal, stem, stamen and vine in Narramore’s designs is crafted by hand out of fondant to accurately reflect the shape, color and scale of actual flowers. Narramore, who studied studio arts in college, draws from her arts background to mix the colors she uses to hand-paint each detail. No pre-mixed or pre-manufactured colors are used in her designs. While it might be difficult to be-

The Mischief Maker, Alex Narramore, recently took some time to answer a few questions about her background, process and inspiration for Smiley Pete reporter Celeste Lewis.

Your work is a delicious combination of art, gardening and baking. How did you put it all together and create your business? I was baking some cakes in high school and at the start of college. None were very good, but I was teaching myself the basics and how to bake. I took an art class in college that I loved, and I thought the art paired with the cakes I was making would make a great business, something that would let me indulge in the creative while also making money. This is something that my high school and college really pushed. I was sitting at my mamaw's kitchen table in eastern Kentucky (Jenkins) and there was a book by [celebrated cake designer] Sylvia Weinstock on the table. My mom walked past and said, “If anyone was going to make it with those cakes, it'd be with those sugar flowers.” I thought it was a brilliant idea and took a sugar flower wedding cake order. I had no idea how to make them, but just knew it could be figured out. My mom jumped in to help me and has been helping and working side-by-side with me ever since. Full

circle: Sylvia was judging an industry-led awards show years later [featuring one of my cakes] and called to ask the editor why she was being asked to judge a cake with real flowers on it. That being her life and

what inspired us meant the world to us, especially because we learned as we went and were completely self-taught. I ended up winning best international wedding cake artist in the awards show she judged that year. How do you begin a project? Tell me a little about your process. I usually begin a project with talking to a client. They have an initial base idea, a vibe or concept. I take that concept and start my own research, pulling anywhere between 15-100 images that I think will resonate with them. Often these are from sources I know and love, so I'm able to find them things I think they’ll love too but may not have found on their own. What are some of your inspirations? Flowers — playing with flowers and making them in varying stages of bloom. Are they perfectly new blooms? Are they dying a bit? Are they wilted? Are they missing some petals? The stage of bloom a flower is in denotes the emotion it will have in the finished flower. Color is another huge inspiration. I'm inspired by interesting color palettes. They could be from a painting, image or garment of clothing. I love taking complex color palettes and tying them together with just a few strings and bridges that make the overall visual work. What’s a tool in your work you cannot live without? That's a hard question! I feel like I need many tools for baking and can often grab whatever to make it work for a sugar flower. However, it all is very tool-based! I'm tempted to go abstract and say determination.

Your Instagram is so beautiful and engaging. What is the role of social media in your success? Thank you for saying that! At first, I never wanted to show progress of anything I was doing, because I considered it unfinished. I was crazy and wrong. The beauty is often in the process. In one second, something beautiful you are working on can be touched with the wrong color and be different than it was a moment before. If you aren't documenting, you lose those special moments. I also don't think that people glancing at what appears to be a finished sugar flower cake could understand that they weren't real flowers or that they were made piece by piece. I enjoy connecting with people and I have found that by sharing what I do, someone will message and say something they do in their life: music they're listening to, what they eat for dinner, how they grow something. I'm learning all the time. When you put more out there, you get more back. With the newsletter I've recently created (The Mischief Maker on Substack), each time I put out an article I hear something back. I wanted the newsletter to belong to us as a community as a way to be able to share ideas that would enhance our personal lives, including mine. How do you manage work and life balance? My work is a huge part of my life. My life and what is going on in it inspires me to do my work creatively. It all feels so interconnected to me. The connections I make and have in my life, the food I eat, and the walks I take are my work or become my work. We can't pull one apart from the other. ■

3 Surefire Ways to Get Into the Holiday Spirit Get some greenery. Visiting a quality Christmas greenery/tree market is a hallmark holiday tradition. This year, the always-popular Hillenmeyer Christmas Market will move from its longtime location in the parking lot of Landsdowne Shoppes to Ashland: The Henry Clay Estate, where it will set up on the beautiful and historic grounds starting on Nov. 20. Expect to find the usual hot cocoa and cider, a live nativity season, trees, garlands, signature Boxwood wreaths, custom ribbons and more. To really kick the holiday spirit into full gear, a special Christmas at Ashland event will take place on Dec. 2; see our holiday calendar for more details on that, and visit www. hillenmeyerchristmas.com for more details on the Hillenmeyer Christmas Shop.

1-30. Entries, which must be 100% edible, were accepted starting in mid-November from individuals and teams in categories ranging from amateur to professional; they will be judged by a team that includes chefs Ouita Michel and Toa Green, as well as Lauren Jacobs, Food Network’s “The Cheerful Baker,” a past participant of the competition who used her entry to secure a spot in season six of Food Network’s “Christmas Cookie Challenge.”

Fans of the Lansdowne Shoppes location shan’t fear, as Louis Flower Power has taken over that location and is opening its own Christmas shop with a variety of Christmas trees, hand-selected and custom wreaths, garland, cut evergreens and other supplies to help spruce up your home and hearth for the holiday season. The shop will be open seven days a week starting Nov. 21, with a special opening ceremony on Nov. 24 featuring a cocoa bar, nativity animals, carolers from the Henry Clay High School chorus and a Christmas tree lighting. Santa will continue to visit every Thurs.-Sun. from 4-7 p.m., with “Bedtime Stories with Santa” events taking place Sunday evenings — kids are encouraged to come in their pajamas to hear Santa read their favorite holiday stories (registration required). More details can be found at www. louisflowerpowershop.com.

Take a candlelight tour. There’s something about touring a historic property by candlelight that just oozes holiday spirit. Central Kentucky has no shortage of beautiful historic properties, at least a couple of which offer candlelight tours in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Check out the gingerbread houses at Mustard Seed Hill. Mustard Seed Hill, a historic venue located in Millersburg, Kentucky, about 45 minutes from Lexington, will display submissions for its 6th annual gingerbread competition Dec.

Mustard Seed Hill visitors are also treated to a host of other holiday delights throughout the month of December, including a dazzling light display, holiday refreshments and music, bonfires and more. See the entry in our holiday calendar or visit www.mustardseedhill.com.

On Fridays and Saturdays during the first half of December (Dec. 1-16), candlelight tours will be offered at Shaker Village, at 5:30 and 7 p.m. The outdoor tours begin outside the property’s Trustee’s Office, with lanterns provided for guests as they travel through the village while learning about the history and evolution of Shaker Christmas traditions over past 200 years. Candlelight tours have long been part of the holiday tradition at Ashland: The Henry Clay Estate as well. This season, they’ll be offered Dec. 2, 7 and 9 from 5:30-7 p.m., with this year's "Currier & Ives: A Winter Wonderland" theme highlighting the Currier & Ives lithographs that were paramount to 19th century home decor. Spaces are limited; tickets available at www. henryclay.org. ■
