IT’S GOOD TO GIVE. Welcome! 2012 GoodGiving Guide is Smiley Pete Publishing’s year-end campaign designed to raise funds, inspire volunteers and educate our community about the critical work and role our local nonprofits play in our quality of life here in Central Kentucky. During our first-ever 2011 GoodGiving Guide Campaign, over 1,500 donors contributed more than $204,000 in support of 58 Central Kentucky area nonprofits. Not bad for a first try, but we can do more. This year we are campaigning for 68 incredible Central Kentucky nonprofits, located in Fayette, Bourbon, Clark, Jessamine, Madison, Scott or Woodford counties, who have met the high organizational standards required by our partners at Blue Grass Community Foundation. These nonprofits committed to transparency, accountability, and best practices so you can be assured that the donations you make will be responsibly managed to benefit the causes you choose to support. The 2012 GoodGiving Guide goal is to raise more than $400,000 for the 68 participating nonprofits. All money donated goes directly to the nonprofits without any administrative costs thanks to the efforts of Blue Grass Community Foundation and the Smiley Pete Publishing family of local media, Chevy Chaser Magazine, Southsider Magazine, Business Lexington and tadoo.com. Founded 15 years ago, locally owned Smiley Pete Publishing has grown from the single publication, Chevy Chaser Magazine into a family of publications and web sites with more than 150,000 print readers and 100,000 online users at chevychaser.com,

southsidermagazine.com, and bizlex.com. Tadoo.com, a curated community arts and entertainment happenings web site launches this month. Goals of the 2012 GoodGiving Guide • to encourage people who do not regularly give to donate, with an emphasis on engaging young people under 35 in the act of giving to local nonprofits. • to provide a Central Kentucky philanthropic platform which makes giving back to our community simple, easy, fun and effective. • to provide money, publicity, volunteer engagement, and community education for local nonprofits. This year’s GoodGiving Guide campaign is supported by more than 200 area organizations, businesses, corporate donors, locally owned businesses, media partners, donor reward partners, and volunteers. Thank you for reading the GoodGiving Guide and learning about the 68 local nonprofits and the important work that they do for the community. Visit GoodGivingGuide.net and donate to help these nonprofits earn special grants, matching awards and enjoy a thank you gift from our donor incentive sponsors. If you can’t give money, please consider volunteering time. We’re all in this together.

Blue Grass Community Foundation is thrilled to again partner with Smiley Pete Publishing on the 2012 GoodGiving Guide Challenge. This innovative and fun online giving campaign is a call to action to everyone with a passion for good. We’re all aware of the importance of buying locally. We believe it’s just as important to give locally. At the Community Foundation, our mission is to promote charitable giving. We make giving simple, effective and rewarding. We help individuals, businesses and nonprofits establish charitable funds, endowments and scholarships, meet community need and make a difference. We strive to educate all donors of all means about the terrific local nonprofits making a difference right here, right now, in our own neighborhoods--and to grow a more dynamic pool of wellinformed givers. We believe that the more people know about our community’s needs and the many amazing local charities serving those needs, the more they’ll give. The GoodGiving Guide Challenge helps us do just that. Last year’s inaugural Challenge was a testament to our community’s generosity—and to its willingness to get involved and excited about giving. Over 1500 unique donors made an average gift of $108 to their favorite charities through the Challenge. Our goal was to raise $100,000 for the

58 nonprofits that participated in the Challenge. All told, the 2011 Challenge raised over twice that --$204,439. But the 2011 Challenge didn’t just provide much-needed support for local charities, it also engaged a new generation of donors. Almost one-third of donors were 35 years of age or younger. In addition, local businesses and philanthropists provided matching grants and prizes for nonprofits and donors alike. Last year the Community Foundation provided $10,000 in challenge grants to participating nonprofits This year, we’ve set our sights even higher. We’ve expanded the GoodGiving Guide Challenge to include charities in seven central Kentucky counties. And we’ve increased our goal fourfold, to $400,000. We know we can do it. We know we’re an exceptionally generous community. Last year’s Challenge taught us that. To lead the way--and to demonstrate our own commitment--Blue Grass Community Foundation has pledged $45,000 in challenge grants to this year’s 68 participating nonprofits. The first ten nonprofits to raise $4500 will win a matching $4500 endowment grant to a new or existing nonprofit endowment fund at the Community Foundation. The Anniversary Challenge is our way of celebrating the Community Foundation’s 45 years of service, and to say thank you to everyone who wants to make a difference.

WHAT WE DO: We help children, birth to five, who are blind and visually impaired. Teachers travel to each child’s home showing parents how to help their baby roll over, sit up, and crawl. Take away vision and you take away a baby’s motivation to move and learn. Visual impairment affects every aspect of a child’s development, and our teachers find ways to help each VIPS child prepare for preschool or kindergarten. Ultimately we want them to be independent, capable adults. WHY WE’RE GREAT: VIPS was the first and continues to be the only agency in Kentucky dedicated to meeting the early intervention needs of young children with visual impairments. Our certified teachers thoroughly understand a child’s development and the impact a visual impairment will have on a child’s education. WHAT WE DO: Through the power of volunteer advocacy, CASA of Lexington works to ensure that all victims of child abuse and neglect are given a chance to thrive in a safe, permanent home. CASA’s trained and supervised volunteers provide an independent voice for children, one child at a time, by speaking for their best interests in the family court system.

Jim Rogers ($250) Tony Perkins ($250)

WHY WE’RE GREAT: When a child is hurt by those meant to protect them, CASA volunteers stand up to ensure that child’s voice is heard. CASA focuses solely on the child’s well being. Throughout the child’s case his or her life will change often. One of the goals of CASA is to minimize these changes, both by providing continual monitoring and advocacy for the child, and by being a stable, constant person for the child. VOLUNTEER & IN-KIND NEEDS: • Become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) • Assist the development committee with fundraising

CENTRAL KENTUCKY YOUTH ORCHESTRA

YOUTH

$500 MATCH

WHAT WE DO: Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras is one of the oldest, independently chartered youth orchestras in the United States, now in its 65th season. CKYO believes every young person with outstanding musical ability and a willingness to work hard should be given the opportunity to develop that skill. The purpose of CKYO is to foster, in cooperation with public and private schools, quality musical opportunities for talented young musicians in the Central Kentucky region and provide affordable, family-friendly concerts to the community.

Anonymous Donor

WHY WE’RE GREAT: Each season over 300 students gather from over ten counties and nearly 50 schools to participate in CKYO’s five orchestras where they rehearse and perform the great works of our musical heritage. In addition, CKYO operates two community outreach programs, Friends in Music and CKYO in the Schools, which offer free musical education experiences to young people who would not otherwise be able to pursue their interests in music. I GIVE... Because I can and others cannot. I give because there are people out there doing the work that I cannot do; that I don’t have the patience, will or guts to do. If I am not doing the work that needs to be done to make our community thrive, the very least I can do is support it financially. Please donate now and often. Your community depends on it.
