BEM-VINDOS. WELCOME. HAERE MAI. Welcome to the second Reel Brazil Film Festival. This year we will be in 3 cities, and in just 12 months we have become the largest annual Brazilian-focused event in New Zealand. We aim to show Brazil in a way that makes sense to New Zealand audiences, and to grow our links with Kiwis. That is why we are honoured to be partnering with, and supporting the charity Skylight for our opening night in Wellington. In the last 15 years Brazilian cinema has been experiencing a rebirth in the global scene with numerous productions winning awards in international film festivals. We currently have co-production agreement with 9 countries and in 2010 have already released 61 films. Another 64 are in their final stages. Approximately 30 of all these films are international co-productions.
These figures represent the powerhouse the Brazilian film industry is today and that we believe - and invest - in working in collaboration with other countries. I hope Reel Brazil not only entertains through our films and many parties but also sparks the interest of New Zealand filmmakers to work in collaboration with Brazil and to take advantage of Brazil’s generous tax shelter laws. My deepest thank you to all the people who have worked alongside me to make this festival so successful. MESSAGE FROM THE AMBASSADOR OF BRAZIL TO NEW ZEALAND, H.E. RENATE STILLE
MESSAGE FROM THE AMBASSADOR OF NEW ZEALAND TO BRAZIL, H.E. MARK TRAINOR
Dear Friends of Brazil,
Dear Fellow New Zealanders,
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the second edition of Reel Brazil Film Festival in New Zealand.
I congratulate director Leandro Cavalcanti for continuing the Reel Brazil Film Festival initiative in New Zealand again this year.
Cinema, as New Zealanders understand, is a great medium for showcasing national culture and identity. It is therefore appropriate that this year’s festival will take place around the same time as Brazil’s Independence Day celebrations on the 7th of September, along with many other events planned by the Cultural Sector of the Embassy.
The festival gives New Zealanders the opportunity to catch something of the enormous variety of Brazil and its people and culture. Brazil is also a rising major global economic and political power: it is already the eighth largest economy in the world; a major agriculture exporter which also has sophisticated industries; and plays an influential role in many international negotiations of interest to New Zealand. The New Zealand government is committed to deepening our bilateral relationship with Brazil.
Following its first year success in Wellington, I am very happy that the Reel Brazil Film Festival has grown and will now also be shown in Auckland and Queenstown. This will give our large Brazilian community in those cities the opportunity to enjoy a bit of ‘home away from home’ and continue to enhance the knowledge of Brazilian culture, but now amongst a wider local audience. Once again I congratulate director Leandro Cavalcanti for pursuing this important initiative and wish him every success! Até lá! See you there!
Renate Stille Ambassador of Brazil to New Zealand
Leandro is one of a growing number of Brazilians who either live now in New Zealand, or who visit - mainly for education or tourism. They are part of the people to people links between New Zealand and Brazil that are fundamental for every other aspect of our bilateral relationship. As part of this process, I hope that more New Zealanders will look at visiting Brazil to see the country at first hand. I am sure that the festival will encourage that curiosity, and I wish Leandro and his team every success with ‘Reel Brazil’.

JEAN CHARLES Fiction // 2009 // 93 mins Director: Henrique Goldman Jean is based on the true story of Jean Charles de Menezes, an innocent Brazilian man killed mistakenly by the British police, following the 2005 terrorist attacks in London. But this is no sober dramatic re-creation: instead, the film tells the story of a young man in a new city, reuniting with a favourite cousin who has just arrived in London. The film shows the tragicomic situations Brazilians go through when moving to another country, making Jean Charles’ violent death all the more shocking. jess@goalpostfilm.com | www.goalpostfilm.com

CITIZEN BOILESEN (Cidadão Boilesen) Documentary / / 2009 // 92 mins Director: Chaim Litweski “An energetic, vibrant history of Brazilian politics in the 1960s and early ‘70s and its severe military-industrial response to the prospect of socialist rule, Citizen Boilesen crackles with political intrigue and personal demons.” – Sean Farnel
This fascinating film looks into the life of Henning Albert Boilesen, a Danish man who became a naturalised Brazilian and rose to the heights of his new country’s corporate elite. Famous in Brazil and honoured back home in Denmark, he was also deeply involved with the military dictatorship—so in his spare time he helped torture left-wing radicals who were judged to threaten the government. This investigative biography examines Boilesen’s extraordinary life and reveals much about the connections between Brazil’s business elite and the dictatorship. cidadaoboilesen@gmail.com
