Amigos, in 2014 we welcome sunny Nelson to our Reel Brazil roadie. I also welcome our new festival partners and the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce as a co-host for the Wellington Corporate Gala Opening. In an effort to bring the Brazilian and NZ film worlds together, and with help from the New Zealand Film Commission, we will also present seven New Zealand short films. I take pride in the work delivered by my crew, formed by passionate and talented Brazilians and New Zealanders. Their on-going dedication and support has helped turn what started as a simple idea into something real. I hope you enjoy going to the festival as much as we enjoyed putting it together!

“ Walter Lima weaves the band’s fictional story into some of the events of the period and adds a love triangle to come up with a pleasantly offbeat film.” – Dan Fainaru, Screendaily Rio was on the verge of being discovered as a hotbed for a cool new jazz form: Bossa Nova. A group of friends who come of age during the political turmoil that plagued Brazil during the 1960s and 70s, form the band “Os Desafinados” and become a defining part of the groundbreaking Brazilian musical movement. Inspired by real musicians of the Bossa Nova era, director Walter Lima weaves the band’s fictional story into some of the events of the period. Out of Tune (also the name of a famous song by Tom Jobim, composer of The Girl from Ipanema) is a story about the birth of Bossa Nova and the experiences and transformations in the lives of these passionate, creative, and idealistic artists. Elena, a young Brazilian woman, travels to New York with the same dream as her mother: to become a movie star. She leaves behind her a childhood spent in hiding during the years of military dictatorship. She also leaves Petra, her seven-year-old sister. Two decades later, Petra, now an actress, travels to New York in search of Elena. This film “is a cinematic rendering of a memory; a visualisation of a person long gone; a deeply personal poem of film that manages to also be incredibly humane and universal. The film is bolstered by the dreamy photography of Costa on the streets of New York. The result is a mesmerizing, artful and emotional piece of filmmaking that consistently surprises and awes in its sensitivity and (as Herzog would say) ecstatic truths.” – Katie Walsh, Indiewire. Tattoo Tatuagem

Drama, Comedy, LGBT 2013 – 110 mins Hilton Lacerda

“ A chaotic, melancholy homage to alternative theater that fizzes with the spirit of period transgression.”

Australasian Premiere

– Jonathan Holland, Hollywood Reporter

Auckland: Sun 27 April 8.00pm Thu 1 May 6.15pm Sun 4 May 6.00pm

Winning all the major prizes at the recent Rio Festival, the story takes place at the tail-end of Military dictatorship, where a group of artists who begin to challenge power and moral conventions surface. The Star-Spangled Floor are an anarchist theatre group with subversive and avant-garde cabaret shows practicing political resistance through anarchy and mockery. The group refer to themselves as the “Moulin Rouge of the outskirts, the Broadway of the poor, the Studio 54 of the slums”. “Loose and ebullient, Tattoo sees worlds collide as the omnisexual leader of the troupe falls in love with an 18-year-old soldier serving Brazil’s military dictatorship. With a gender-blurred atmosphere of glitter, nudity and impudence right out of The Cockettes, the features primary club setting establishes a tenor both transgressive and innocent.” – Dennis Harvey, Variety.

“ Syncopated in its editing, with a Scorsese-like voice over… Bald Mountain is a fast-cut, epic tale of friendship and greed.” – John Hopewell, Variety Bald Mountain is a modern-day gangster film set during a Brazilian gold rush. Made famous by the black-and-white images taken by photographer Sebastiao Salgado, Serra Pelada represents the highest concentration of manual labour since the pyramids of Egypt. The Brazilian gold rush, southeast of the Amazon, saw approximately 120,000 people chasing their dreams of wealth. This epic feature follows two friends who leave Rio de Janeiro in search of gold: one, an ex-boxer turned gangster, corrupted by greed and power; the other, a man whose only ambition is to make enough money to return home to his pregnant wife.

“ The impact that these stories may have on people’s lives can be very positive, and who knows it may prompt us to start small and create change around us.” – Vassilo Zaitsev, Cinepop Brought back by popular demand, this film had several sold-out session in RBFF 2013. Who cares? The stars of this documentary do, and they’re changing the world. Beautifully shot, inspiring – it’s a movement, not a film. Social entrepreneurship is not a phrase that easily rolls off the tongue, but once you see the film, you’ll be a believer. The people showcased are bringing solutions, generating huge social impact, and most of all, inspiring people to do the same. The film captures stories of everyday people in Brazil, Peru, Tanzania, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and the USA. “Informing but never lecturing, the film succeeds in conveying the importance of social innovation.” – Sarah Ward, artshub.com.au Winner Best Documentary 2012

“ The Dognapper can be proud to be part of a group of comedies with an engaging and cohesive script.” – Ravi Santana, BR Cine Deco, a shy and stroppy music nerd, falls for the self-assured Zoé after almost running over Guto, a narcoleptic puppy who faints every time he gets too excited. After a hot and cold two-year relationship, Zoé, a radio presenter, dumps Deco and returns to her high school sweetheart, Fernando, who has struck success in the dog grooming industry. Deco, outraged, tries to take control of the situation and, with the help of his cousin, sets about trying to get his dog Guto back. Set in the idyllic Rio landscape, this joyous feature is bound to draw laughter from the audience as it pokes fun of the cultural behaviour of the Rio de Janeiro’s inhabitants, and the awkward situations they find themselves in.

“ Combining computer and hand-drawn animation to excellent effect... uncommonly sophisticated in its themes and execution.” – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter In 2013, this animated feature won the top award at what is considered the “Festival de Cannes” for animations in Annecy, France. Fusing computer graphics and hand drawings, Rio 2096 is the epic animated story of Abeguar, an indigenous warrior who traverses 600 years of Brazilian history – past and future. Born in 1566, Abeguar was chosen by the gods to lead his people against the forces of oppression. To arm him in his battle, he is gifted the ability to transform into a bird and reincarnate himself at different points in Brazilian history, from the Portuguese colonisation of the 1500s, through to slavery and dictatorship, culminating in the sci-fi, far-flung future of the year 2096. Travelling with him through time is the love of his life, Janaína, a fierce warrior in her own right. Winner Best Feature Film 2013

“ A fascinating delve into American governmental and CIA plans to disrupt the democratic leaders of Brazil, which would eventually lead to the 1964 coup d’état.” – Mark Adams, Screendaily In 1969 the U.S. Ambassador to Brazil was exchanged for 15 political prisoners. Years later, Camilo Tavares, born in exile to one of these prisoners delves into the reasons of why Brazil suffered 21 years of brutal dictatorship. Sifting through a wealth of interviews, declassified documents, and audiotapes from U.S. Government agencies, helmer Camilo Tavares delivers an unassailable assessment of JFK’s bullying policy of communist containment which overthrew the popularly elected Brazilian President Joao Goulart, and with him Brazil’s democratic institutions. In the name of ‘Freedom’ and ‘Democracy’, the Brazilian military regime controlled, tortured and imprisoned thousands of citizens from 1964 to 1985 – one of the longest dictatorships in Latin America. This documentary is about the Mangueira Samba School neighbourhood, its residents, and the larger than life personalities who love Samba, and have played a pivotal role in Mangueira’s standing as one of the top Samba schools in Rio.” – Russell Slater, Rio Times.

“ It was like a Volcanic eruption. With no doubt, the audience’s favourite at Gramado Film Festival. I can’t recall any other Brazilian animation that I enjoyed as much as this one.” – Dario PR, Cinemascope, Brazil Connected to the mainland by an isthmus, Sbornia is an isolated, independent and anarchist State, home to successful musicians Kraunos Sang and Pletskaya. When the giant wall that separates Sbornia from the rest of the world collapses, the Sbornians suffer a towering cultural shock. Things go from bad to worse when a powerful businessman decides to commercialise their local drink Bizuwin, creating several quirky and amusing situations, underlined by themes of corporate dominance and environmental impact. “ The chosen scenes transport us into the football stadium and the emotions that come with it, causing goosebumps to any supporter.” – Paulo Vinicius Coelho, Folha de São Paulo From the director of A Night in 67 (RBFF 2011), more than a documentary about football, this feature is a narration of passion and fanaticism that will accelerate the heartbeat of all sports enthusiasts. With statements from such football stars as Zico and Romário, along with rabid fans, the film invites the viewer to share one of Brazilian football’s most charming feuds – the rivalry between two of the largest football clubs in Brazil: Flamengo (Fla) and Fluminense (Flu). Aside from rescuing historical footage and memorable football matches, Fla x Flu alternates between factual and personal statements from both teams, giving rise to provocation, banter and high emotion.

With these short films we recognise some extraordinary New Zealand filmmakers – and also we see that while Brazil may be far away geographically, it is actually a lot closer to New Zealand than we might think. Check the film pages to find out if they will be preceded by a NZ short film.

When two lonely holiday icons finally meet for the first time there is jealousy, ego and unresolved childhood issues.

This brief drama recalls the 1970s notorious dawn raids on the homes of alleged Pasifika overstayers, deporting many within a few days.

A playful look at the iconic samba figure ‘malandro’. The charming spirit of this womanising hustler still proves irresistible, even to the wise modern woman.
