BRAAMFONTEIN :: PUBLIC LIFE SURVEY The objective of a Public Life Survey is to observe, measure, and quantify daily life within a specified area over the course of a day. Through the careful observation of daily life the dynamics and set of actors that unfold within the public space provide clues to how it space is negotiated. The premise of the Public Life Survey was to test the hypothesis of whether Braamfontein served as an inclusive and diverse space, as claimed by the City of Johannesburg. The study was conducted on Saturday (Market Day) June 27th, 2015 and involved occupying strategic locations (see report) over the course of a full-day (~12 hours) to experience the full temporal range and shifting demographics that accompany the opening and closing of shops, bars, and restaurants. Qualitative data was collected through photographs and informal interviews with pedestrians, shop owners, and employees. Quantitative documentation was gathered through the precise drawing of the public space and notation of the various ways in which people occupied the space including: time of day, type of activities, duration of use, and group size. Race, gender and age were chosen as the key measurement characteristics to measure and test whether Braamfontein acts as a space of inclusivity. These characteristics were chosen because of their significance and correlation to perceived safety and fear, economic status, education levels, and diversity and historical overtones in South Africa. The following pages couple the experience of the urban observers [students] with their careful notations to reveal the publicness of Braamfontein.
5
FINDINGS In a blend of an experiential and quantifiable survey in Braamfontein, numerous implications and conclusions were drawn. Ranging from topics of temporality, safety, and the prevalence of varying social groups it is concluded that the area of Braamfontein supports and serves a diverse range of users. Young males between the ages of 21 and 40 were the prevalent occupiers of space. Cycles of events and flexibility of spaces activated the urban environment. Within Braamfontein, a variety of programs occurred throughout the day. Examples include the Neighbourgoods Market, cafes and coffee shops, retail stores, clubs and bars.
6
Furthermore, as a declared improvement district, re-surging from economic decline, the presence of multi-layered security contributes to a newfound experience of safety. In turn, the area of Braamfontein serves as a unique enclave within the city of Johannesburg that provides a sense of urbanity in a walled-off suburban city. Lastly, temporary place-making features, plantings, seating, performances, and public art, successfully transform and activate interstitial spaces. As a result, the area generates a regional draw providing a platform for a diverse set of individuals to interact and express themselves freely. Overall, throughout the span of one day, Braamfontein served as a diverse urban environment within the city of Johannesburg.

Through the data collected pertaining to the frequency of age in Braamfontein, it is concluded that the prevalence of particular age groups within the survey areas at certain times implies the quality of safety within those areas. Within Braamfontein, areas that had a higher prevalence of youth under the age of 10 and individuals over the age of 60 were areas with higher pedestrian activity, open shop hours, live street performances with spectators, larger quantities of families and thus eyes on the street. Location D in particular is one that illustrates this occurrence. In comparison to each survey area, Location D had the highest rate of youth under 10 and individuals over 60 at anytime throughout the day. Upon the conclusion of local shop hours and many local attractions such as the Saturday Braamfontein Neighborhoods Market, less youth under the age of 10 and individuals over the age of 60 were prevalent, and in turn the dynamic and character of the public realm changed to be less favorable. The plan drawing to the right illustrates the particular areas (Locations A,B, and D) within the physical survey boundaries that had the highest rates of youth under the age of 10 and elderly over 60. All in all, the drawing aims to illustrate spatially, the concluded implications of age in relation to safety in Braamfontein.

QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS Over the course of the day the students informally interviewed 61 people with a particular set of questions to understand the use and sense of the space through different perspectives. The attempt was to cover a wide range of demographics to tie in to the characteristic analysis of Braamfontein. During these conversations few people had interesting comments and thoughts about Braamfontein or Johannesburg in common which are highlighted throughout this book. The questions asked during interviews were as follows : 20
1. Where do you live?
2. How often do you visit Braamfontein?
3. What is the purpose of the visit?
4. How long do you stay or during or what time of the day you visit?
5. What do you like about this place?
6. What do you not like about this place?
7. Do you feel safe here?
The following pages explain findings from the interviews.

Public Space The built form sometimes does not reflect how open the buildings are and how public space penetrates through built structures. The neighborhood market is a surprising insertion of public space into a garage structure on an alley.

Changing Space Throughout the course of the day spaces evolved, fluctuating with the opening and closing of shops, restaurants, and bars; each bringing their unique and identifiable demographics. As these events unfolded, the occupation of spaces changed, leading to crowds on the street corners and the emptiness in the alley. The following pages describes, though a photo essay, the temporality and changing spaces of three areas in Braamfontein. Station D Station D on Saturday morning is the entrance for the market. Simple place making amenities supported the traffic to the market, including benches, lighting and planters hanging on the walls. There was a series of performers at the entrance that attracted a lot of attention and energy. There was a steady stream of traffic in the morning that peaked at 3pm and then dropped off dramatically at 4pm. The entrance quickly referred to a service entrance as vendors began leaving the building in automobiles. As the sun when down the benches, planters and finally the stage pallets were removed leaving no trace of the previous vibrant activity.

Station F Station F was a quite corner for most of the day. Much of the street activity revolved around the coordination of parking of cars, sometimes on sidewalk. Coffee shops and small shops made up the fabric of the street. There was a small public courtyard behind the buildings. Around 4pm there was a gathering of about 25 teenagers on the street they partied for about an hour before dispersing. They openly drank alcohol from bottles and mixed drinks but this wasn’t a concern for the security guards who were more concerned with violence and property destruction. By around six this street had emptied out significantly and most of the shops had closed.
