PREMISE

Through the careful observation of daily life the dynamics and set of actors that unfold within the public space provide clues to how the space is negotiated. The premise of the Public Life Survey was to test the hypothesis of whether Braamfontein served as an inclusive and diverse space, as claimed by the City of Johannesburg.

Demographics study

The study was conducted on Saturday (Market Day) June 27th, 2015 and involved occupying strategic locations over the course of a full-day (~12 hours) to experience the full temporal range and shifting demographics that accompany the opening and closing of shops, bars, and restaurants. Cycles of events and flexibility of spaces activated the urban environment. As a declared improvement district, re-surging from economic decline, the presence of multi-layered security contributes to a newfound experience of safety.

In late 1990s the vibrant neighbourhoods near St Louis Lambert International airport were bough out for runway expansion and noise abatement. Much of the area remained vacant for over 20 years with no development. The site under consideration has N Hanley Station, one of the most active nodes of metro ,used by 21.5% of the people in the neighbourhood. The environmental, transportational and economic networks in the site are broken by the highway and new development which has also made the area less pedestrian friendly and unsafe.

DESIGN

View of the i70 highway

The proposal looks into re-connecting these fragmented pieces and making the metro station more assessible to the people by the means of landscape elements. Main features include easy and human friendly pedestrian paths connecting major points and the daylighting and cleaning of the maline creek to make a continuous green way and water system.

Refresh ! East Side, a city revitalisation project proposes a new Transit Oriented mixed-use downtown for East St Louis. This new development would be triggered by the development of a Station at East Side for the HSR line connecting Chicago to St Louis utilising the Federal and State incentives. This development will target active, young professionals and students with its walkable and environment friendly design like the metro station, the civic core, the river edge redevelopment and the new expanded greenway connections.

View of the structure

The alarming situation of rise in sea-level around new york and other parts of the world has inspired this proposal to illustrate the idea of living on stilts in the city to test the new protoype of building construction that is flood resistant. The project lies along the historic JMZ subway line running from Manhattan to Brooklyn.

DESIGN

The temporary installation illustrates and familiarize people the life on stilts and creates awareness among them about the alarming situation of sea level rise. In a city with more high rises and less open public spaces, the area beneath the stilts is used as a active public space with access to the upper floors. The first level is a semi public space with commercial activity and the upper floors are modular studio apartments. During flood this prototype protects the living space from damage. PREMISE

The project is a development of an Art cafe in the cultural and historic district of Kerala in India. The idea is to restore the art deco building in the site and design an art museum , art cafe and artists residence in the site. The first floor of the building is converted into a bakery and boutique shop for the cafe. The second floor is converted into rooms of 25 sq m. The new building is aligned with the existing and is used as an entry to the gallery and exhibition space inside. The traditional Kerala Architecture is mixed with minimalistic design to maintain the character of the Historic Street.

The installation is an iconic structure set in a place revered by the poet; her birthplace- an appropriate setting for the iconoclastic poet who defied conventions in a mentally strait jacketed society. The flow of spaces from the green lobby via the angled pillars of the transition zone, through the rustic wooden reading space defining framed views of the snake shrine to the exhibition hall and underground solitude points culminating in the main water body offer an insight into the poet’s eventful life.
