Welcome

Brexit Britain will look like, but it seems that very little has been achieved so far. I would have thought the issue was so important that the various political factions in the UK could, for once, put their differences aside and work for the good of the country in general but it’s obvious that isn’t going to happen. And sadly, whatever deal our Brexit team comes up with, half the country won’t like it – and there’s a good chance that with Brexiteers and Remainers on both sides of the House, a final deal will be rejected by Parliament anyway. Let’s hope that, come 2019, we leave the EU with a deal that will be good for the consumers and good for businesses too. If industry suffers, then we all suffer alongside it. On that uncertain note I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year

We’ve got some cracking stuff here which will be of interest to all lovers of this iconic truck brand. As we look forward to 2018, all I can say is that we are in for some interesting times ahead. XF voted the Year 2018’

D

AF Trucks’ New CF and New XF series have been voted ‘International Truck of the Year 2018’ by an independent jury of leading road-transport journalists from 23 European countries. The most prestigious award in the European truck industry was handed to DAF Trucks’ President Preston Feight by Gianenrico Griffini, chairman of the jury at the Solutrans exhibition in Lyon. The DAF New CF and New XF feature completely new powertrains with highlyefficient transmissions and rear axles. Together with the new compact after-treatment systems, sophisticated software and aerodynamic optimizations, these innovations result in a

fuel efficiency gain and CO2 reduction of an impressive 7%. For vocational configurations of the new trucks there are up to 300 kilograms in weight reductions to further enhance the customer’s operating efficiency. “The annual award is presented to a new truck or model range that has made the largest contribution to road transport efficiency, based on several important criteria including technological innovation, driver comfort, road safety, drivability, fuel economy, environmental ‘footprint’ and Total Cost of Ownership,” commented Griffini, chairman of the jury. “With the introduction of the New CF and New XF series, DAF has delivered a medium

and heavy-duty truck range that sets a new standard in terms of driveline efficiency and overall performance.” On behalf of the 10,000 DAF employees throughout Europe, DAF Trucks’ president Preston Feight received the prestigious award. “The honours belong to every member of the DAF organisation,” he said. “We all worked hard to make the best trucks on the market even better. The results are the New CF and New XF – representing Pure Excellence. It is fantastic that all these efforts are rewarded in such a great way. In addition, winning the ‘International Truck of the Year 2018’ award is a recognition for our suppliers and dealers, Winter 2017 // DAF Driver

Truckers ‘will welcome’ RHA’s new Overnight Allowance concessions

T

he industry will welcome the Overnight Allowance concessions negotiated by the Road Haulage Association (RHA), says accountancy firm Menzies LLP. RHA members had complained that newly-imposed rules were confusing, unfair and were costing them money. The most contentious issue was an insistence from the tax officials, that drivers must produce receipts to cover the exact cost of the overnight allowance they are paid, to cover subsistence when they are sleeping in their cabs on longhaul trips. HMRC has now issued new guidance which means drivers won’t have to produce receipts, totalling the exact amount payable under the overnight allowance and that other means of recording expenses, such as digital photographs on a smartphone will be acceptable to the tax authorities. Andrew Brookes, Head of Employer Solutions at Menzies LLP, said: “The industry will be

very pleased with the concessions negotiated by the RHA. These will make it far easier for both drivers and fleet operators to manage the new tax regime relating to Overnight Allowances. “Fleet operators have been concerned about the increased administration ever since the abolition of dispensations in April 2016. “From that date, a bespoke agreement has been required if hauliers or logistics companies wanted to reimburse more than the standard amounts, or want to adopt the industry rates negotiated by the RHA. Without this, such payments are taxable. “HMRC has been concerned that some companies might have been abusing the system in order to provide tax-free payments when they are not due and are understandably keen to ensure that this is stamped out. Consequently, they were seeking to impose onerous procedures on firms to prevent abuse.” Under the concessions, drivers will no longer be required to

provide receipts equating to exactly the right amount. While evidence must be obtained by the driver, they will only need to provide this to their employer if asked to do so. They will also be allowed to supply receipts in a digital format, such as a photo taken on a smartphone. Brookes added: “We would recommend drivers are instructed to take a photo of a receipt rather than simply the food they have bought to avoid the risk of an HMRC officer saying there is no evidence to show that the meal

was purchased by the driver. “From haulage firms’ perspective, they will simply need an acceptable system of random review in place and then a record of the expenses paid, rather than retaining receipts for every single claim. “While the concessions will be welcomed, it is important to note that haulage firms will still need to apply to HMRC for the right to use the bespoke rates, but we understand a simplified application process has been agreed by the RHA.”

Tougher sentences for drivers who kill by speeding or carelessness Dangerous drivers who kill while using their mobile phones or speeding could now get life sentences under a change to sentencing. Introduced following a consultation by the Ministry of Justice, the move means that drivers who cause death while speeding, racing, or using a mobile phone could face sentences equivalent to manslaughter, with maximum penalties raised from 14 years to life. Offenders who cause death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs will also face life sentences, and a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving will be created, “to fill a gap in the law and reflect the seriousness of some of the injuries suffered by victims in this category of case” according to Justice Minister Dominic Raab. The new legislation was welcomed by road safety charity IAM RoadSmart – but it warned that the threat of jail alone is unlikely to make people drive in a less dangerous way. Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart Director of Policy and Research, said: “We feel that visible policing, and a high likelihood of being

6

Winter 2017 // DAF Driver

caught is the surest way of making people drive better. If people don’t think they will be caught, they simply won’t drive in a safer way.” He added: “It is also vital that courts reflect society’s view on the impact of dangerous driving and use the maximum

available sentences – something they have so far not demonstrated on a consistent basis. While a toughening of the law might make people feel better, on its own it is sadly unlikely to reduce the number of cases of really selfish driving which end in tragic results.”

New ULEZ plan ‘could cause more pollution’ The Mayor of London’s decision to introduce the Ultra Low Emission Zone 17 months ahead of schedule could bring about a rise in the number of vans operating in London, potentially undermining air quality plans and increasing congestion. So says FleetCheck as it warns that the most obvious way for fleets to meet the new 2019 deadline, brought forward from 2021, is to transfer loads from non-compliant trucks which face a £100 daily charge to compliant vans where possible, leading to more vehicles in the ULEZ. Peter Golding, Managing Director, explained: “Whether this is a desirable outcome from an air quality point of view is obviously open to question but is an effect of the earlier deadline that would be no doubt unintended.” Peter also spoke out about the impact of such short-term changes in national and local government policy on fleet planning. “Fleets have been planning for the original

ULEZ date for years and timing their vehicle replacement accordingly. “To change that date at relatively short notice is something that has a definite cost, either in terms of replacing vehicles earlier or operational compromises.

“While sorting out air quality problems in London and elsewhere is undoubtedly crucial, balanced against that is the impact that changing the deadline could have on businesses in terms of jobs and more,” he concluded.

Drivers face tough new penalties if caught exceeding hours limits

N

ew rules mean the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will be able to issue on-the-spot fines for any drivers’ hours offences committed in the previous 28 days. This relates to drivers who breach their tachograph restrictions. Currently, DVSA can only fine drivers for offences committed that day or for ongoing offences such as manipulating tachograph records that record drivers’ hours. The Government has not confirmed when the new rules will take effect but when they are introduced, DVSA traffic examiners will be able to issue fines for up to five drivers’ hours offences in a single roadside check. It means

a driver can be fined up to £1,500 from that check. It won’t matter whether the offences take place in Great Britain or elsewhere. The rules will also apply to drivers who don’t live in Great Britain. If the roadside check reveals they have breached the rules, they will have to pay any fines immediately before being allowed to continue their journey. If they don’t, DVSA will immobilise their vehicle until they pay. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), driving while tired may be the cause of one in five of all accidents and up to a quarter of serious and fatal crashes.

About 40% of sleep-related accidents involve drivers of commercial vehicles and, in a bid to tackle the issue, 6,300 drivers’ hours fines were issued to lorry drivers by the DVSA between April 2015 and March 2016. As well as giving fines to drivers for recent offences, DVSA traffic examiners will start issuing fines to deal with drivers who don’t get proper rest. Rules state that lorry, bus and coach drivers must take a 45-hour rest break at least every fortnight. From November, the DVSA has started to fine drivers up to £300 if they spend their full weekly rest break in their vehicle in places where it causes a problem – for example, if lorry drivers spend their full break in the cab of their truck in a layby. In some areas, lorry drivers have parked illegally or inappropriately while taking the 45-hour break and have caused residents to complain about noise, litter and anti-social behaviour. During 2016, authorities in Kent took action against 3,700 lorry drivers for parking illegally or inappropriately. DVSA Chief Executive Gareth Llewellyn said: “These tougher fines will help us to take stronger action against any drivers or operators who break drivers’ hours rules and will help make our roads safer. There’s no excuse for driving while tired. The results of falling asleep at the wheel of a 40-tonne lorry can be devastating to families and communities.” Winter 2017 // DAF Driver

O

ne of the earliest recipients of DAF’s New XF product was DAF operator Derek Heeps Ltd in Bo’ness, West Lothian, after the scrap metal transport specialist took delivery of a new, top-rated XF 530 FTG with Super Space Cab. The 6x2 mid-lift tractor unit comes with a three-year DAF MultiSupport R&M contract through DAF Dealer Imperial Commercials in Cumbernauld. Heeps was also the UK’s first recipient of a Euro-6 DAF XF in 2013. “We really like the DAF product,” said Derek Heeps, “and this latest XF looks to be an improvement on an already excellent truck. We keep buying DAFs because they’re a good, solid, reliable vehicle – we have over 20 in the fleet now.” The new DAF model line-up – now complete with the New LF series at the lighter end of the DAF product range – arrives in the UK as DAF Trucks further strengthens its position in the UK truck market above 6.0-tonnes GVW. Latest market share figures confirm DAF Trucks’ dominant 30% share – nearly twice that of its nearest competitor – meaning one-in-three new trucks in the UK is a DAF. The DAF New CF and New XF rigid and tractor line-up boasts up to 7% lower fuel consumption thanks to innovations and higher ratings to the PACCAR MX-11 and MX-13 engines, a new ZF TraXon gearbox, new high-efficiency rear axles with faster gear ratios, advanced powertrain software and new cab aerodynamic aids. For the driver, new trim, a new dashboard layout and new temperature / climate controls further enhance already high levels of comfort, while an Exclusive Line specification provides the ultimate in luxury. l News on the latest New CF and New XF multi-axle rigids and tractors can be found on page 18, while details of the latest New LF line-up follow on page 20

DAFcheck hits two million jobs

D

AFcheck, DAF Trucks’ own electronic vehicle maintenance record system, reached a noteworthy milestone in October after two million individual ‘jobs’ were completed and registered by DAF Dealers from its total of 136 locations across the UK and Ireland. DAFcheck logs all regular vehicle inspections, servicing and maintenance work, with secure reporting back to DAF customers through emails and a dedicated DAFcheck web portal. Importantly, DAFcheck – available to DAF

customers free of charge – goes towards compliance with the DVSA. DAF Trucks is also working with the DVSA on its ‘Earned Recognition’ scheme to ensure operators can access their KPI information required by the new scheme. Ultimately, DAFcheck has a meaningful impact on DAF customers’ ability to protect their O-licences. Further, and with the benefit of almost 1,900 IRTEC-accredited DAF Technicians throughout

The DAFcheck website provides customers with access to all job reports, chassis files and vehicle documents, with the facility for users to register defects ahead of upcoming inspections

its network, DAFcheck has helped the UK market-leader achieve over 96% MOT firsttime-pass rate in September 2017. Launched in 2010, DAFcheck has grown significantly year-on-year to reach an average of 6,500 jobs every week in 2017. This year alone, over 62,000 individual vehicles have been logged and inspected through DAFcheck. The DAFcheck website provides customers with access to all job reports, chassis files and vehicle documents, with the facility for users to register defects ahead of upcoming inspections. DAFcheck is also integrated with DAFaid, DAF Trucks’ industry-leading roadside assistance service, delivering features such as alerting the technician to the vehicle’s next inspection and to any temporary repairs. Artic mixer is unique for Hanson

A

ggregates, cement and ready-mix concrete producer, Hanson UK, says its trials with a new DAF CF 6x2 mid-lift tractor with Muldoon trailer and McPhee mixer combination has been a ‘resounding success’ in reducing its traffic movements. The truck/rear-steer trailer configuration, unusual for UK mixer operations, is proving to be highly effective in boosting delivery volumes, while reducing the number of Hanson’s rigid mixer vehicles on the road. The CF 440 FTG unit has already conducted in-service operations in London, Manchester, Leicester and Burton-on-Trent as the company gathers evidence to support a fleet-wide shift to truck/trailer operations. With an objective of attaining a low kerb-weight, the DAF CF product was selected following an exhaustive specification project undertaken by Hanson Regional Transport Manager Tim Sage and supplying DAF Dealer Evans Halshaw in 2016. Hanson says the resulting kerb-weight of 16,500 kg is delivering tangible productivity benefits, without compromising tight access often experienced when accessing construction sites. “We have long experience of dealing with DAF,” said Tim, “and Evans Halshaw’s willingness to engineer a total transport solution was key for us in selecting the CF six-wheeler. So far the DAF CF has been ticking boxes ever since the trial started and the truck/trailer combination has been a resounding success on sites across the UK – our operations team all responding with positive feedback – there’s certainly the potential for more units to come into service. “The tractor/mixer-trailer combination is not new, but the DAF and Muldoon-McPhee set-up utilises the Euro-6 engine’s PTO to power the drum rather than a separate donkey engine, thereby cutting emissions and noise as well as improving payload, thus maximising environmental benefits.” The new DAF CF comes with a passenger door lower window developed by Cheshire-based Astra Vehicle Technologies to provide a direct view of cyclists and pedestrians on the nearside of the vehicle. The design allows the main passenger door window to open – a key benefit that offers a clear view of traffic during poor weather and allows access to easily clean the mirrors from the passenger seat.

You wear it well! DAF offers a variety of used trucks under the First Choice scheme. Here Lucy Radley tests an XF460 tractor unit to ascertain how viable it really is to buy second hand...

O

ur test vehicle is a 16-plate XF460 tractor unit with the much-loved Super Space Cab and 67,772km on the clock, supplied by DAF dealer Ford & Slater. It has come to us completely un-prepped, as requested, and is clearly wearing well – certainly cosmetically speaking there is very little work to do and the interior is perfectly clean and ready to move into. With the 460hp MX-13 engine under the floor and the 12-speed AS Tronic automated transmission this is just the kind of spec well-suited to the variety of roads found in an area like this, and with DAF Commercial Trainer Mandy Wannerton riding shotgun, we’re confident we’ll soon get to grips with both. Her presence is not a special concession made for press testers with rusty lorry-driving abilities, by the way – another of the First Choice scheme’s selling points is that driver familiarisation training is provided with every vehicle sold. That isn’t to say the XF isn’t easy to drive. We even turn up with a sports injury to our nearside

front limb to give the vehicle a true challenge and are pleased to confirm that it causes no problem whatsoever. The AS Tronic has always been a very touchyfeely box in that it responds well to small movements of the throttle given to trigger a gear change, and between that, steering which is just heavy enough to let you feel the road without either jarring or feeling excessively cumbersome, and our use of the Hill Start Aid rather than reaching for the park brake at every junction, by the time we drop onto the busy A46 to the north of Leicester we’re already feeling at home. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of information thrown at you by modern trucks like this, but one of the best things about the XF is that it’s really quite polite. For example, after many years spent using pure exhaust brakes which are left switched to ‘on’ continuously, it’s unsurprising to find ourselves being caught out by the MX Engine Brake we have today – not because of how effective it is, and it is very effective, but by forgetting to turn it off. Unlike many of its contemporaries, however, the XF doesn’t shout at you with harsh ‘bong’ noises and excessively flashing dashboard screens – it just gives you the kind of gentle audio-visual nudge that very quickly becomes irritating enough to ensure you change what you’re doing, without actually being distracting. All the vehicle’s various electronic guides are the same, in fact, with one exception: the Lane Departure Warning System is far louder and more insistent, as it should be, given it’s potentially saving both our necks! But it’s off the easy conditions of the dual

carriageway this thing really comes into its own. Melton Mowbray is typical of Leicestershire towns in that the only routes in and out take you up hill and down dale and under Mandy’s confident tutelage we have the truck taking corners far more positively than ever before, the Vehicle Stability Control, MX Brake and gearbox working together just noticeably enough that, after the first few heart-stopping bends, we soon find the confidence to really let her go. Even on single-carriageway roads like the A606 you can still engage Predictive Cruise

Buying a Euro 6 XF for the first time – what to look out for... Like all modern trucks there have been very few instances of major component failure in the DAF XF; especially the Euro 6 model which appears to be more robust and reliable than its predecessor and it’s pleasing to be able to report there seem to be very few minor niggles either. Nevertheless there are still a few things it’s worth being aware of 1. Check for active warning lights. Later models include AEBS (Advanced Emergency Braking and LDWS (Lane Departure Warning System). Some early LDWS ECU’s have been troublesome and would require dealer rectification 2. Check if a Truckphone is fitted (use the menu control switch to see if functionality is shown in the DIP (Driver’s Information Panel)) and if so, make sure Truckphone activates correctly and connects with your phone www.dafblog.co.uk/videos/training/daftruckphone-explained 3. If the optional TNR (Truck Navigation Radio) is fitted, make sure the map software is updated (map data information can be found in ‘settings’). Ensure the vehicle weight and dimensions are set correctly to enable truck specific route guidance 4. Check for cracked DIP panel cover. This can be caused by use of high alcohol cleaning materials 5. Poor starting may be due to injector seal failure 6. As with all Euro 6 trucks make sure you understand about regeneration of the diesel particulate filter. There is a useful video available on the DAFBlog Control and drive ‘feet off’, at the same time making use of the Eco-mode button on the stalk-mounted transmission control which reduces torque by 10% for maximum fuel economy, except when the engine is under load. It was refreshing to be encouraged to manually change down on the stalk as well, something which has earned us a slapped-wrist from other driver trainers and telematic scoring systems we’ve encountered. Overall this is a surefooted and forgiving vehicle which doesn’t leave the driver feeling like they’re doing battle with the technology

as so many modern vehicles do when they’re unfamiliar, and which hasn’t lost it’s raw grunt and power when needed – like when we take an utterly random wrong turn at a roundabout and have to do a fully-freighted U-turn to face uphill. To their credit, neither truck nor trainer so much as blink, although we’re fairly sure the former is restraining a smirk. Combine all that with an already well-loved cab design and you can’t really go wrong, truth be told, especially when you’ve got the peace of mind that comes of dealing with 90 years experience in the form of Ford & Slater as well.

www.dafblog.co.uk/videos/training/daftrucks-euro-6-regeneration/ 7. Since late 2015 DAF CF & XF have been fitted with an EcoMode button on the end of the right hand column stalk. Make sure the salesman explains how this works and when to use it. Pressing the button will enable increased engine and vehicle performance. Traffic jams cost UK firms £9bn – and it’s getting worse

Every minute you sit in your truck in a queue, it’s costing your firm money. Trevor Gehlcken looks at how much is being wasted and how the Government is aiming to ease the pain

I

f you think that traffic on the UK’s roads is getting worse and costing you money in lost business, then you aren’t wrong! There were more than 1.35 million traffic jams on the UK’s major roads in the past year, costing drivers an estimated £9 billion, new research from Inrix suggests. The causes of the five worst queues ranged from fuel spills to broken down lorries. November 2016 was the worst month, with over 169,000 traffic jams on the UK’s major roads – 50% worse than average. However, traffic jams across the month of April proved the most severe, with the research revealing they were 24% worse than average. The year’s worst traffic jam occurred on August 4 on the M5 Northbound by Junction 10. Traffic tailed back 35 miles at the peak and the jam lasted 15 hours, resulting in an estimated cost of £2.4 million to road users. The cost of traffic jams is composed of the value of wasted time, fuel and unnecessary carbon emissions. Estimates were made based on assumptions about trip purpose and the fuel consumption of the average vehicle, with

national averages used as a basis for these values. National pastime Dr Graham Cookson, Chief Economist at Inrix, said: “While queuing is considered a national pastime for many Brits, nothing is more frustrating than sitting in traffic and Inrix Roadway Analytics shows it’s a costly activity.

demonstrated on a daily basis with congestion at key pinch-points around the country. “Sadly, the fragility of the road network is exposed whenever there is a major incident on a motorway. “The fall-out effect of motorists seeking alternative routes causes serious traffic jams in surrounding areas, often bringing gridlock to

Jams can be caused by all kinds of incidents but fuel spillages, emergency repairs and broken down lorries contributed to the biggest traffic jams this year “Jams can be caused by all kinds of incidents but the Inrix Incident Platform shows that fuel spillages, emergency repairs and broken down lorries contributed to the biggest traffic jams this year.” Record numbers RAC roads policy spokesman Nick Lyes said: “We now have record numbers of vehicles and a road network that struggles to cope with the increased volume of traffic. This is very clearly

towns and cities as a result. “While clearing the aftermath of a major motorway accident is understandably time-consuming, more needs to be done by all the agencies involved to speed up reopening and to improve diversion routes.” Increase in congestion RAC research has found that 56% of motorists believe congestion on the UK’s major roads, which are responsible for carrying two-thirds

of all traffic, has increased. This is very worrying finding as motorways, high-speed dual carriageways and A-roads only make up 13% of the UK’s road network by length. In addition, 61% of drivers surveyed said congestion and journey times on motorways had worsened in the last year. The Government’s Road Investment Strategy is starting to add capacity on motorways, but the associated roadworks inevitably cause short-term traffic pain ahead of the longer-term gain from the creation of smart motorways where traffic flow is controlled by variable speed limits. Nick concluded: “Authorities should look at congestion holistically and consider all measures available to them to improve traffic flow such as better traffic light sequencing and incentivising utility companies to carry out roadworks more quickly, something which the Government is currently consulting on. “Drivers can also reduce the impact of being caught in congestion by planning journeys before they actually get in their vehicles.” ●

... but updated £15bn road progra Highways England has updated its £15 billion road improvement programme to reduce the impact of roadworks on truckers and motorists and minimise congestion while improvements take place. Plans for 26 road upgrades have been revised to reduce roadworks taking place in the same area of the network or on popular journey routes at the same time. This will mean less congestion for motorists as Highways England embarks on the biggest road

upgrade plan for a generation. The Supplementary Delivery Plan will see Highways England rescheduling its programme for the schemes between three and 24 months – meaning a number of schemes will be completed earlier than planned. All are still set for delivery as part of the Government’s first road investment strategy. Jim O’Sullivan, Highways England Chief Executive, said: “Our update is a sensible and responsible way to deliver major national investment in road

infrastructure. It will keep our roads moving, deliver a lasting legacy for the country and ensure best value for money for the taxpayer.” Now, more than two years into delivery of a £15bn Government investment in motorways and major A roads, Highways England has already completed 18 major schemes, adding more than 190 lane miles of muchneeded capacity to the nation’s roads. The 10 schemes being brought forward are:

DAF Trucks’ complete line-up

F

ollowing on from the launch of the New CF and New XF tractor units at the CV Show earlier in the year, DAF Trucks has now unveiled eight two, three and four-axle rigids, and three three-axle and four axle tractors units to complete the set. Unveiling the last of the trucks, Ron Barsboom said: “The engine revs of the (revamped) MX-11 and MX-13 engines have

18 Winter 2017 // DAF Driver

been lowered, which is commonly referred to as ‘down speeding’, to deliver better fuel consumption. At the same time, the maximum torque of the engines is increased significantly, with the maximum torque now available at an amazing 900rpm.” Power in almost every powertrain is up between 10-to-20hp and torque increased by 50-to-200Nm. “DAF applies ‘Multi Torque’

that releases an additional 100-to-150Nm in the highest gear. This allows driving for longer periods in the highest gear, which optimises fuel consumption and maximises performance,” he said. Barsboom’s theme centred on enhancement to reduce weight. For off-road work, DAF has introduced a new double-driven tandem with hub reduction made from a new cast axle

housing that drops 60kg. These changes to the 8x4 FAD range also means the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) unit is no longer integrated in the vertical exhaust, and instead is in with the new ultra-compact Engine After-treatment System (EAS). The unit fits between both front steering axles, and saves 115kg reduction in weight

and provides more chassis space. Phil Moon, UK Marketing Manager, said: “This makes it possible to use the free space for the addition of crane legs, toolboxes or extra fuel tanks and results in increased frame layout options and extra payload, thanks to its 50kg lower weight. The new powertrain and exhaust configurations are up to 100kg lighter, with

new axles and tandem sets contribute to total weight savings of up to 250kg for the New CF FAD 8x4. Other ancillary changes include new electro-hydraulic steered trailing axles, Battery Energy Monitoring (BEM) system and the latest automated transmission from ZF, the TraXon, and unveiled a new lightweight four axle mixer chassis.

New LF City As DAF Trucks rolled out the remainder of its new product range with a raft of new innovations and components, it produced a rabbit from the hat with a new 7.5 tonner, the LF City. Turn to page 22 >

A

ccording to Department for Transport statistics there are 115,000 commercial vehicles on UK roads plated between 7.0 and 8.0 tonnes gross vehicle weight, the lowest number since records began in 1994. At this sector’s peak in 2004 more than 162,700 commercial vehicles trundled around Britain’s roads. The death knell has been tolled several times since grandfather rights were removed in 1997 and greater efficiency seeing operators migrate to heavier chassis. Yet this sector remains the biggest field of commercial vehicles on UK roads, accounting for 22.4% of commercial traffic, closely followed by traffic plated at 41 tonnes or more accounting for 22.0%. Diminishing or otherwise, it’s too big a market to let slide, so news from DAF Trucks that it has introduced a new 7.5-tonne chassis cab with a manual gearbox should perhaps not come as a surprise. The New LF City is fitted with a new addition to the engine line-up – the 3.8-litre PACCAR PX-4 engine. It is the first engine in the line-up to forego Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and rely solely on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to meet Euro-6 emission levels. Operators can choose from between 156hp with 500Nm 22 DAF Driver // Winter 2017

torque or go muscle-up with a beefier 172hp with 600Nm torque to go with a manual five-speed Eaton transmission. That’s right. No two-pedal option here, Eaton’s five-speed was the only system that would allow the exhaust pipe to go between it and the engine, allowing it to achieve higher aftertreatment inlet temperatures. PX-4 is fitted with a new turbo and the outlet is closer to the engine after-treatment system. The lighter displacement is 55kg lighter than the 4.5-litre PX-5 engine for the typical 7.5- tonner, which features EGR combined with SCR technology and an active soot filter. This PX-5- powered LF can be ordered with a two-pedal automated transmission. In keeping with the City spec, DAF Trucks will only make it available with a day-cab. Should you require anything other

than a ready-made box from the Leyland production line, you can have it as a chassis-cab and add your own body. It is on a 3.55m wheelbase, which is the third longest of seven ranging between 3.05-to-5.00m, and there is a window panel in the bottom of the passenger door to improve visibility. As a result, the passenger gets a sliding window because there is no room for the winding mechanism. So why launch a new entry-level product into the market saturated with competition and lighter cab-over options from Asian manufacturers? While its kerbweight, 3,234kg for the chassis cab (see sidebar), inches it closer to the sector’s lighter cab-forward trucks built by Mitsubishi, Isuzu Trucks and Toyota, likelier customers will be through established relationships. That means utilities and local council, parcel and trade carriers and the last-mile deliveries by the chilled and frozen food sector. Trucks in this sector work stop-start low-speed multi-drop routes, and DAF’s Marketing Manager Phil Moon sees New LF City as an agile, quiet and very drivable product that can compete. DAF Driver Magazine soon got the chance to go through the urban streets of Sitges, a small town 25 miles down the coast from Barcelona, to see if gear-changing is back in fashion. While it is a five-speed with a direct-drive top gear and 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, to get around repeated changes in dense slow moving traffic interspersed with quicker sections the breadth of the third gear has been ‘widened’, according to our Dutch co-driver.

It allows you to lug close at around 800rpm and chug through at a sedate 15mph. As opportunities dictate, you can bring the revs up, in a somewhat lively fashion, through the peak torque plateau to toy with more than 2,200rpm at around 30mph without needing to change. Just like an automated transmission only without any gear changing. This specification won’t suit every operator but it does return an element of driving back into the hands of the frequently side-lined lorry driver and for that they might be thankful. Third gear covers a multitude of sins but it doesn’t cater for everything so if you want to crawl to a set of lights without stopping, then second gear is required. Through the town, which would give central London a run for its money when it comes to congestion, at no point did I need to go higher than fourth gear. It handled remarkably well thanks to a relatively short wheelbase and the suggestion from DAF Trucks Chief Engineer Ron Borsboom that the New LF City could be a ‘fun vehicle to drive’ proved correct. As we zipped through Sitges, the extra window in the optional ‘vision door’ came in handy through a tight zig-zag and for the most part we didn’t need to come out of third gear. But to get the best out of this truck, you will need to read the road and judge the traffic lights – skills some of us have long forgotten.

Shake Ruttle & roll! Chorley in Lancashire hides a real gem of an operation. Ruttle Plant – a no-nonsense, familyrun transport operator in the construction sector, with a deep affiliation with the north-west – a local operator built up by local people in a typical truckyard setting. DAF Driver Magazine headed north to discover an impressively modern range of trucks and an equally impressive array of plant and equipment

O

n a grey day in Lanchashire, Ruttle’s mustard-yellow and purple truck livery certainly brought a splash of colour to our visit to the company’s Chorley base. The design has received a fairly recent update, but the basic colourway remains intact since the company’s early days, and in 2017 it looks as a good as new. Those early days began in 1960 when grandfather, George, set-up as a small agricultural contractor out of nearby Leyland. In 1960, his son, Harry, moved into construction with a Massey Ferguson backhoe loader and Ruttle Plant Hire was born. A generation later and the heirs to the Ruttle empire, Gareth, 36, and Matthew, 34, preside over a multi-faceted business today.

Hard graft

“My father worked incredibly hard,” said Gareth, “really, really hard. For a time in the 70s and 80s, Ruttle was one of the biggest privately-owned Plant Hire Companies in the UK, and had one of the largest fleets of Hitachi excavators in Europe – and our dad built it up virtually single handedly,” he said. With Ruttle Contracting starting up in 1982, times were good for the family business, “There just wasn’t that much competition back then,” said Gareth, “Today, it’s ultracompetitive and you have to provide a bespoke service for your customers; you have to differentiate from the competition. That’s why we have diversified and today’s Ruttle Group of companies reflects our strength-in-depth,” he said.

Out of the box

Looking ahead – literally

That isn’t to say the 150-tonne XF is illequipped. The four axle heavy-haulier is brimming with technology, showcased by DAF’s Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) that will automatically brake and slow the vehicle down, Forward Collision Warning, ASR (Drive Slip Control), VSC (Vehicle Stability Control). DAF’s Super Space Cab boasts heated and air-cooled leather seats and many other driver comforts. The DAF brand is joined by Volvo and, as Gareth Ruttle explains, “The two marques will form the fleet partnership going forward,” he says, “we’re now investing heavily in a fleetwide replacement programme and there are a lot more DAF tippers to come.” “For productivity and reliability, we’ll look no

Investment in new trucks especially, is very

much on the agenda. The latest acquisition is a new 150-tonne 8x4 DAF tractor unit – an XF 510 FTM with lift-and-steer second axle, supplied by DAF Dealer, Lancashire DAF. The new factory-built DAF sits at the head of the fleet alongside Ruttle’s 155-tonne Mercedes SLT; another specialist four axle machine boasting the German manufacturer’s Turbo Retarder Clutch. “The DAF,” he said, “is a factory model with a straight forward drivetrain, and it was considerably less to purchase, that’s for sure. It does exactly the same job as the Merc. We can’t say we prefer it, and the drivers would squabble all day over the pair, but the DAF is a solid, reliable motor and the factory spec is a real advantage. Our own workshop technicians tell us how easy it is to work on – and that goes for our DAF eight-wheelers, too,” he said.

further than DAF’s CF Construction 8x4 tipper chassis. Again,” says Gareth, “a solid, nononsense workhorse, and that’s all you need for on/off road work.” The new DAF flagship is accompanied by four older 6x4 XF 105s and a number of 60-tonne GCW Volvos. A total of 50 trucks, predominantly eight-wheel tippers, work out of Chorley.

Do it yourself

technicians perform all routine (and not-soroutine) repair and maintenance. New trucks are acquired with standard 12-month warranties and are never extended. In fact, the company says that all mechanical work is performed on-site in its own workshops, while serious enquiries are now being made into acquiring manufacturers’ diagnostics equipment thus allowing Ruttle full management of its truck maintenance activities. Management of truck operations out on the road, however, falls to Ruttle stalwart, David Meadows, who traces his career (and friendship) with Harry Ruttle back to 1987. A

truck man through-and-through, Meadows spent the next 13-years on Middle East work, pretty much there-and-back every week. He became Transport Manager for Ruttle in 1987. “This yard is my favourite place in the world,” said Meadows, “I love the job and I love the Ruttle family business.”

There’s a genuinely timeless, family feel about the place, often missing from many of today’s ‘logistics’ operations – and there’s much to be said for that personable work ethic. Don’t be misled, this is a dynamic, forward-thinking business with the nous to cut its cloth during the recession with the bigger picture in mind. That picture is now coming into focus as Ruttle continues the investment in a new fleet of trucks and as the family-tree begins to propagate with the next generation of Ruttles.

rian Yeardley Continental, already regarded as operating one of the highest profile advanced fleets of international mega trucks and trailers in Europe, is adding three New XF 480 FT low-deck tractor units to its fleet – the first to be delivered in the UK. Kevin Hopper, Managing Director of the business, (pictured above) says he expects “more to come if the success of the initial fleet additions lives up to expectations”. 30 Winter 2017 // DAF Driver

Alongside the EU spec with left-hand-drive cabs and 950mm fifth-wheel height, Kevin has ordered the New XFs with Super Space Cabs and the latest PACCAR MX-13, 480bhp engines. He says: “We have a history of running higher power engines in our fleet, on the basis that lower revving engines will generally deliver better economy. “However, I was convinced by [supplying DAF Dealer] Lancashire DAF, who were very involved

and helpful in getting the spec sorted out, that the 480 will give us all the power we need and much improved fuel economy. To date, the first truck in service is certainly living up to that expectation. “I have driven the New XF for myself and I am very pleased with the new TraXon gearbox as well. box, the truck was running at least 200rpm lower than our current trucks.” Brian Yeardley drivers are already excited by the new additions. The driver of the first vehicle to arrive took himself into Kevin’s office to say ‘Thanks boss, what a machine!’ “That hasn’t happened to me very often,” he said, adding: “Safety, both of our drivers and vehicles is a major focus for us as a business. I think DAF has been working very hard to get to the front

rank of manufacturers in this respect, but I believe they are there now and that certainly ticked a very important box for me.” With operations spread across the major mainland European countries for its business in automotive parts, white goods and other ‘just in time industries”, the operator has been growing strongly in recent times with what it describes as ‘four new blue-chip customers’. In this environment, Hopper sets the highest

standards for reliability across his fleet. “Anything mechanical can suffer an unexpected breakdown,” he says, “but it’s what happens when that occurs that’s important. DAFaid has shown itself in the past to be an outstanding 24/7 operation, with good parts availability across the UK and, more importantly for us, its European network, and a willingness to keep any disruption of our services to a minimum.” Winter 2017 // DAF Driver 31

Something for the weekend, sir? The DVSA’s clampdown on drivers ‘weekending’ in their cabs all seems to have gone horribly wrong

L

ike many other nations in the more prosperous parts of the EU, we Brits have decided that we have had enough of hauliers from lower cost areas of the Union out-basing their underpaid drivers over here for weeks at a time and have used an inventive interpretation of the EU Drivers’ Hours law as a tool for making them feel as unwelcome as possible. This interpretation relies on the

provision made in the law to shorten the weekly rest from 45 to 24 hours, providing it is taken away from the vehicle’s base. Somehow, this has been interpreted as meaning that it is illegal to take a normal 45hour weekly rest in the cab, although the law doesn’t actually say this. Indeed, the guy who runs the legal advice service for the FTA has assured me that the

location of the rest is not mentioned in this part of the legislation. Nevertheless, DVSA is now following other western-European enforcement authorities in fining drivers for taking their normal weekly rest in the cab. Except that, the DVSA has made an exception. It has told the Road Haulage Association that it won’t be enforcing this particular (made-up) law if the break is taken in a motorway services or other recognised and paid for parking place where there are suitable facilities, even if the driver spends the rest period in the cab. In other countries, he’s expected to get a hotel room. But, it won’t confirm this to me, or other journalists, although it doesn’t deny having issued the advice to the RHA. Drivers taking advantage of this particular Nelsonic blind eye are advised to keep a parking ticket for the weekend, so they can prove that when they broke the law regarding taking their weekly break in the cab, they were doing so legally, according to the clarification that the DVSA gave the RHA but won’t confirm or deny to anyone else!

I hope you can see the logic in this, because I am blowed if I can

Meanwhile, in Kent there appears to be what was described to me as (and you’ll have to excuse my informant’s language, he’s one of those outspoken lorry-driver types) a “cluster**** of epic proportions” over truck parking. There is a well-publicised shortage of legitimate parking places in Kent, which is Britain’s “gateway to Europe”, and that is likely only to get worse after Brexit when it will take longer to get through Customs formalities, and therefore trucks on international journeys will have to stop closer to the coast. The brilliant minds at Kent County Council and Ashford District Council have put their clever little heads together and decided between them that the best way of dealing with this problem is to introduce further parking restrictions, closing lay-bys and industrial estates to overnighting trucks. The results were entirely predictable: on the first night Ashford Truck Stop, which has capacity for 300 trucks, had to turn 250 vehicles away. Their drivers were left to find whatever parking spaces they could (country lanes, residential streets?) under threat of clamping and a £250 release fee. My own feelings about Brexit are distinctly mixed, but with our elected representatives and their agents pulling stunts like this, I bet the rest of the EU can’t wait to see the back of us! We used to be dubbed the ‘sick man of Europe’…now we are the laughing stock.

SPEEDBIRD COMMEMORATES ‘POPPY TRUCK’ IN MINIATURE

S

peedbird Promotions Ltd, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of promotional model vehicles, commemorated Remembrancetide in a unique way this year by creating an exact 1:50 scale replica of a special edition DAF truck known as ‘The Poppy Truck’. Having recently hit the motorways of the country, the Poppy Truck became a popular hit among truck enthusiasts and supporters of the Royal British Legion. More or less as it went on the road, a picture of the truck was seen by Speedbird’s Managing Director, Ben Lord, who saw an opportunity to bring together his company’s interest in producing replica model trucks with his personal support of the Ixworth & District branch of the Royal British Legion. Ben said: “For the past two years, I have become an active member of the Ixworth &

TAMMY DEE IN 1:50 SCALE Derbyshire-based promotional model vehicle specialist Search Impex has announced the release of a DAF XF105 510 Super Space (6x2, tag axle) tractor unit with three axle livestock trailer, customised in the classy and distinctive livery of Scottish operator Mackenzie Haulage. The models have been produced exclusively for Search Impex by WSI Collectibles as a certificated Limited Edition (175 pieces). Based in the small village of Culbokie (meaning ‘the haunted nook’) in the Highlands of Scotland, a little over three miles from the town of Dingwall and about 12 miles north of Inverness, Mackenzie Haulage was established in 1995 by Gordon Mackenzie. With an upbringing well steeped in transport – his father and uncle having previously run the original Mackenzie Bros haulage business in Bonar Bridge – it seemed that Gordon would naturally follow into the family haulage

District Royal British Legion where I serve as branch treasurer and we’re always looking for new ways of fund-raising and promoting its values and ethos. “As soon as I saw this truck, I instantly knew this would be a fantastic way of bringing together my modelling and trucking contacts and supporters of the Royal British Legion

business. Events, however, were to change all that when, sadly, the untimely death of Gordon’s father at just 44 led to the winding down of the business, leaving Gordon to work at a nearby garage to gain a qualification in mechanical engineering. Once transport is in the blood, however, it’s difficult to cleanse – and this proved to be the case for Gordon. In 1995, he decided to buy one of the few remaining tippers from Mackenzie Bros and set about offering a tar, asphalt and salt delivery service around the Highlands. The following year, he bought another tipper and took on an employee and a year after that an artic with flatbed trailer was added to the fleet. Then, in 1998, Gordon had the opportunity to buy a small livestock haulier, complete with two livestock cattle floats. Without hesitation, he took up the challenge and so began Mackenzie Haulage’s move into transportation of cattle sheep and pigs. Over the years, tipping work became more cut-throat and less profitable and was slowly dropped in favour of flatbed work and particularly livestock transport. Initially, the business undertook livestock movement as far south as Yorkshire but, with the amount of time expended in seeking out return loads, a decision was made to focus much more on local work. Nowadays, much of the work involves moving livestock to and from Dingwall Mart each week.

by producing a high quality, limited-edition model truck.” Ben continued: “We are delighted to have obtained the support of the Royal British Legion here in Suffolk, who are officially endorsing this fund-raising initiative and our product. Consequently, we are proud to be supporting the Poppy Appeal efforts in Ixworth by donating £5 from every model sold to this year’s Poppy Appeal.” While the end-product will be a certified limited-edition to enhance its value, it is still hoped that this project will help boost the previous year’s achievements by Ixworth & District Royal British Legion who raised around £5,000 for the Poppy Appeal. Along with the limited-edition certificate, the model is accompanied by a luxury gift box, themed around the Poppy Appeal. Visit www.speedbird-promotions.co.uk for details

DAF Trucks takes lead in platooning trials (and follows close behind, too!)

F

ollowing an announcement by the Department for Transport in August, the UK is to conduct operational trials of truck platooning technology. Initiating ‘real world’ operations with DHL, the trials are being led by TRL (formerly Transport Research Laboratory), including strategic engineering consultancy Ricardo and, supplying the vehicles, DAF Trucks. Truck platooning links two or more vehicles in convoy using WiFi technology which maintains close proximity between vehicles while controlling essential vehicle functions, i.e. acceleration and braking. Previous platooning trials in Europe, North America and elsewhere have demonstrated the capability of the technologies but not, thus far, in actual operation. The UK trial is designed to ascertain potential benefits of platooning in day-to-day service, on the UK road network and with its very demanding traffic conditions. Promising Opportunities

Platooning can potentially deliver a number of key benefits. Perhaps the most significant is improved fuel efficiency. By running similar vehicles in close formation, all vehicles can benefit from lower aerodynamic drag. “The lead vehicle pushes air clear for the following vehicles,” says DAF Trucks Marketing Manager, Phil Moon, “and experiences a lower drag itself, as the wake that normally forms a low pressure area at its rear, is reduced. Platoons can save up to 10% in fuel compared to running independently. Of course,” he adds, “lower fuel consumption promotes environmental benefits as carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by a proportionate amount.” Safety benefits

Although platooned vehicles can run with a time gap of only 0.5 seconds (equating to 11-metres apart at 50 mph) the braking systems of all vehicles act in near-unison. The lead vehicle communicates with the following vehicles by advanced WiFi technology and, as Phil explains, “so immediate is response time, drivers in following vehicles experience brake actuation even before they see the brake lights of the vehicle ahead. This helps prevent tail-end shunts that can result from a lack of attention,” he says. 36 DAF Driver // Winter 2017

Accelerator signals work in the same way, so vehicles achieve optimum speed simultaneously, thus helping with traffic flow. Many motorway hold-ups stem from a single harsh braking event which escalates while following drivers (of any vehicle) take time to respond. Cutting congestion

As well as smoothing out traffic flow, platoons occupy less road space and, by removing some of the need for overtaking, more space

may be freed up in second and third lanes. It is anticipated that platoons might have to ‘open up’ when passing busy intersections to allow other traffic to join or leave a main route. Phil said: “Much conjecture surrounds the technology, which is precisely why the UK trials are so important. “The proportion of a total journey that can be run as a platoon will be crucial to how significant any overall fuel savings prove to be.”

Aerodynamic benefit By running similar vehicles in close formation, operator benefits exist through fuel savings and carbon emissions reduction. The lead truck pushes the air out of the way for the following vehicles while affording itself a reduction in its own drag behind the trailer. Tests to date predict a potential 10% saving, but the UK trial will see if it can be delivered in real world operations.

European platooning challenge 2016 saw the most ambitious demonstration of platooning to date when platoons from across Europe converged on Rotterdam. In parallel to the development of platooning technology, work is underway to develop systems that would enable platoons of different makes of truck, and of different operators, to link-up. These could be pre-planned or created dynamically on route to maximise the benefits of platooning.

Driver interaction

While the lead vehicle effectively takes control of braking and accelerating decisions for other platooned vehicles, all are equipped with cameras and monitors for each driver to view the road ahead. Voice communication is also provided for all. Platooning is possible on motorways and major roads, allowing drivers behind the lead vehicle to, as Phil says, “relax a little.” However, they maintain full engagement during the remainder of the

journey and are ready to take control should the platoon need to break for any reason. “While this semi-autonomous driving may seem alien to us today,” adds Phil, “we have to remember that, while the trial will be on the UK roads in the near future, platooning is unlikely to become a regular feature for some years – perhaps the middle of the next decade – by which time car makers believe their products will make many more driving decisions for us.”

UK leading the way

The UK Government believes that autonomous driving will be key to the next generation of vehicles. By working closely with engineers and manufacturers, and enabling testing of these new technologies, it hopes to ensure that the UK continues to play an important role in the global automotive sector; and the best way to fully understand whether these technologies will work in practice is to conduct trials on UK roads.
