If you could put one product in every stocking this Christmas, what would it be? No 28 Lip Treatment Oil in Bare. It feels so good on, and the 24k gold tip is a decadent detail. It’s the kind of indulgence you wouldn’t necessarily treat yourself to. You’re often credited with the invention of strobing; what makeup techniques are you expecting to see through AW19? We can’t take credit for inventing strobing, but we were inspired early on to create a product based on the technique. This season I expect to see more of what we’re calling the Unrestricted Brow — a return to full, natural brows. We actually launched a new product, the Arch Brow Micro Sculpting Pencil, to fill in natural brows with thin, hair-like strokes. And finally, what does beauty mean to you personally? It might be clichéd, but beauty isn’t about what you look like. True beauty comes from confidence. With it, you can pull off anything.

Hourglass is known for its highperformance formulas – many seem to defy chemistry; how do you achieve that innovation? We have a really solid team of chemists, packaging designers, makeup artists, product developers and R&D advisors who turn our ideas into

We prioritise quality in ingredients and packaging, and our prices often reflect that. It’s not luxury for luxury’s sake — you’re getting products that perform really well. We do our best to make the collection accessible, offering travel sizes on many of our bestsellers, so that there’s something for everyone.

The offering is already 80% vegan and you’ve said you want to make Hourglass completely vegan by 2020. What drives that for you? We believe that to be truly cruelty free, we shouldn’t be using any animal-derived ingredients to create high-performance products. Sure, vegan formulas often takes more research and time, but we know it’s worth it.
How do you approach the creation of new products? It’s usually a combination of what we believe our clients need and how we can create the next generation of beauty products. How we determine that really depends on the product. There isn’t one method when you have so many creative and scientific minds coming up with ideas. That said, when it comes to inspiration, we really focus on the customer — what would make our customers’ lives better.

The brand has been cruelty free from the start, was that always your goal? Yes, it’s always been part of our identity. So in addition to being cruelty free and going vegan, it also includes partnering with the Nonhuman Rights Project, an organisation dedicated to securing fundamental rights for nonhuman animals. We have several initiatives that support its efforts.

TRUE BEAUTY Founder and Creative Director François Nars talks about his inspiration, our relationship with makeup, and the brand’s audacious yet sophisticated approach You were born in the south of France, how did that shape your understanding of beauty? Was there a specific beauty identity you saw around you there? My mother was and still is a major influence on my approach to beauty. She was a natural beauty and I drew my complexion philosophy from her effortless makeup routine. My grandmothers were more of the artists and into makeup. My father’s mother loved to paint her face and she did an incredibly beautiful job. I remember she would create perfectly drawn lips – almost as if she was retouched. She loved eyeliner too and would line her eyes and draw in her eyebrows flawlessly. Her precision came from her being an amazing painter (I hope I get my artistry from her). I am lucky to have learned a little bit of everything from these muses. Growing up, did you have a beauty icon? Greta Garbo - I loved her in the movies Ninotchka, Flesh and the Devil and Queen Christina. She was perfection back then…the most beautiful woman in the world! Can you tell us about the first time you painted someone’s face? It was actually my mother. She let me practice makeup on her – she really has helped shape my vision and the artist I am today. How did moving to Paris to study shape your perception of beauty? Can you tell us about your big break and your collaborations with Yves Saint Laurent and Paolo Roversi? I had no connections, and the fashion world was a closed elite. So my mother made appointments for herself with three top Parisian makeup artists and spoke highly about me…she was my first publicist! She was so beautiful and elegant that they must have figured that her son had taste, and one offered me a job as an assistant.
You moved to NYC, and began working alongside legendary photographers such as Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, what was that like for you? I was lucky from almost day one. I started working very quickly because of the industry people I met in Paris - they took me under their wing and really loved me. You launched your first makeup collection in 1994, what prompted this? As an artist, I was frustrated with not being able to find the best products or the best colours and I thought it would be fun to create my own makeup line. It wasn’t planned, it was very spontaneous, which is what I think makes the brand so fresh. What was the beauty and fashion world like before you started your brand? Was it a very different place? When I began my career, the faces in fashion and beauty were very plastic looking – perfect faces with blonde hair and blue eyes. Also, I felt women were following trends blindly because somebody told them to do so. The brand started with a collection of lipsticks, but soon grew to include a full range of cosmetics with colours that were inclusive to all. Was this a conscious decision due to the lack of colour ranges provided by other brands at that time? Yes, I wasn’t happy with the limited options for makeup artistry. Having my own line allowed me to create colours in makeup that did not exist. From there, it grew little by little and I stood behind it the whole way. Was there a particular woman you had in mind when creating the brand? There wasn’t just one woman in my mind. The idea driving us was always about offering a line of makeup that was modern, audacious and iconic to women everywhere.

How would you describe your overall aesthetic as a makeup artist? How has it evolved over the years? My philosophy is the same as when I began my career. It was influenced by mother who wore little to no complexion makeup, and as I started creating beauty looks, I carried this vision of her with me. It was this approach of allowing the skin to show through, as my mother always did, that really set me apart from other makeup artists at that time. I always used foundations with the smoothest texture and applied them with a light touch - photographers appreciated that I brought this transparency to complexion. How has the industry changed since you first started out? How has the role of a makeup artist changed over the years? There has been an incredible evolution of makeup. Women are learning and experimenting more. Social media, professional artists, and of course the freedom of expression are helping women learn to play more with their makeup and not follow rules. I think NARS especially has pushed women to have fun while keeping their look sophisticated. What is the future of beauty? What do you think we will look like 30 years from now? I never think too much about the future. I work a few months in advance because I have to, but for the most part I take it day by day. I celebrate the past but live in the moment. For the future of beauty, I’m not sure. But for the future of the brand, I hope the image of the brand remains; I hope we continue to grow while staying true to our roots, offering modern, audacious and iconic makeup for everyone. WINTER-PROOF YOUR SKIN Janine Da Costa, Education Executive at Dermalogica, shares her tips on how to achieve glowing skin all through the colder months As the temperature drops, many of us notice changes in our skin. Exposure to the elements, not to mention the moisture-zapping heated environment inside, can cause a range of unwelcome skin concerns, including dryness, sensitisation and flaky patches. If you’ve not tried Dermalogica’s PreCleanse yet, now’s the time! SCENTS OF HISTORY A young JFK was captivated by a cologne on the Cote d'Azur, making it a global hit that has stood the test of time EIGHT & BOB is a brand with an illustrious history. During the 1930’s, Albert Fouquet spent his time exploring and creating scents at the family chateau.

Home and food blogger, Sisley White, reveals how If there is one time of the year when you really want to set a beautiful table, it’s Christmas. Here we put together a look that is elegant and luxurious – yet easy to recreate – with a colour palette of bright whites, fresh greens and silver highlights. We used a silver runner on top of a dark table. From there, we added a vibrant garland centrepiece. In the dark and cold winter, a faux garland brings a hint of nature to the house. They are also reusable, which makes them brilliant value for money.
