The WINTER 2013
Royal praise P for Step Up To Serve
RINCE Charles was joined at Buckingham Palace in November by the leaders of the three major political parties to launch a new campaign urging young people to do community work. The project aims to get half of young people volunteering by 2020, something which the Prince described as “a huge but exciting challenge”.
The Fire Service chose Anthony Plant, one of our young firefighters, to go along with them to Buckingham Palace to meet with Prince Charles and to take part in the launch of Step Up To Serve. AN EXCITING CHALLENGE: Haywood Academy young firefighter Anthony Plant (behind HRH) joined Prince Charles, David Cameron, Nick Clegg and other guests at the event.
Green team ready for the grid TRUMPF Engineering are the official sponsors of Haywood Academy’s Green power car for the KMF Young Engineer of the Year Competition. In November six of the 12 strong Haywood team, accompanied by Mr Mountford and Mr Woodward, spent the day at KMF building the car that will race against 18 Staffordshire Schools in July 2014.
Roy Bennett, Technical Support Engineer commented: “The students worked hard and efficiently and above all, we had great fun.” Pictured, left to right, are Jason Knight, Jake Lomas, Max Cordon, Chloe Webster, Thomas Turner and Ryan Lench.

Progress to the point of commitment THE start of the new academic year has seen the introduction of a new inter-house competition using Commitment to Progress results. Accelerated Reading – it’s a real hit at Haywood A
CCELERATED Reading is proving a hit among Haywood students with more and more using the school library. Since September 2013 all students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have been taking part in Accelerated Reader. Students’ reading is measured at the start of each term. The scheme then suggests books which they might enjoy and which will develop their reading by providing a challenge, without being too difficult to read. Each book has a fun, short ICT-based quiz at the end and students can earn Commitment to Progress (C2P) marks by completing quizzes successfully. Students read, take quizzes or exchange their library books during tutorial and Year 10 students mentor younger students.
Students are also encouraged to read during their free time, taking books home to share with their family. Four times as many students are now using the school library as a result of this scheme than before it was launched and students are often to be heard recommending their latest and favourite books to their friends. The next reading level measurement will take place in January 2014 and we hope to see that many of our students’ reading levels have improved as a result of them enjoying their books – and having more time to read them. The students pictured above are among those who have completed the most quizzes since Haywood began Accelerated Reader. They have read almost 1,900,000 words between them!
Students get involved FIRE Cadets from Haywood Academy took part in a special event staged in Hanley town centre to help promote youth services including Girl Guiding, the Fire Cadets, the St John Ambulance and the Boys' Brigade. The event offered dance performances and activities for children to try, including circus skills, first aid activities, cup-stacking competitions, science experiments, hose and water drills, mini tennis and bush-crafts. It was run with the aim of getting more young people involved in trying something new or different. Two weeks later the NULC Fire Cadets also took part in a bag pack GETTING INVOLVED: Some of the young Fire Cadets at the event in Hanley and, left, the bag-packing day at Longton Tesco. at Longton Tesco.

Haywood launches Excellence Academy IN response to demand from parents, students and staff, Haywood Academy is now set to launch an Excellence Academy for Year 7 students. Relaunched PTFA wants your ideas – and your help
Friends lend support to key fundraising events I N September, Haywood Parents, Teachers and Friends Association was relaunched with a new name – Friends of Haywood. We are a registered charity who organise and support events for staff, students and the Haywood community. Any money raised is used to help students make the most of the opportunities on offer to them at Haywood Academy. During this term, the Friends have organised and supported several events, including the Macmillan coffee morning. Our most recent successes have been a wine and cheese evening and the Children in Need bake sale.
Students also held a non-uniform day for Children in Need. They raised a staggering £1,020 and a huge amount of food, which was shared between Stoke food bank and the African Social Health Agency. During the wine and cheese evening, ticket holders had the opportunity to taste a range of wines, alongside platters of cheeses and other treats Wines were available to buy during the event – and a few bottles were won during the raffle! A fun and relaxed evening was enjoyed by all and the commission earned on wine sales has been donated to the Friends, to support our work. As a member of the Haywood
