EWCASTLE-underLyme College (NULC) is offering an increased range of financial support to help its students meet the cost of attending college. The financial support package on offer includes bursaries and allowances, attendance incentives and scholarships, as well as discounted bus passes and help with childcare costs. Karen Dobson, NULC Principal and Chief Executive, said:“With the current difficult economic climate, we’re committed to supporting our students in every way and believe it’s important that everyone has the opportunity of a high quality education, regardless of their financial circumstances.” The College’s Guaranteed Bursary Allowance (GBA) is available to students who are in care or are a care leaver, as well as those in receipt of Income Support or Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance. The College has also launched its own means-tested allowance scheme, called the Newcastle Maintenance Allowance (NMA) – to replace the old Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) – for anyone with a household income of less than £21,000 per annum. It credits students with £30 per week, paid directly into their bank account. There is also a bonus payment, subject to full attendance and successful completion of their course. Eligible students can get up to £20 per week to support them with the cost of attending college and meals, as well as applying for help with

She added:“We understand that there are increasing financial pressures on families, so our allowance scheme is there to help remove financial barriers to college, enabling access to higher education and employment.” In 2011, the College launched the Student of the Month, Talent+ Scholarship Programme and Elite Sports Performance Programme which recognises effort, achievement and excellence through a range of financial and other rewards worth up to £1,000. During 2011-12, over 150 students have benefited from these schemes. A range of other financial support is on offer to all students, including subsidised bus passes and travel cards plus discounts on items from the

College’s food hall and coffee shop. NULC students can also claim money savings on a range of local products and services, from driving lessons to clothing, using their NULC student card. The College has high expectations of student attendance and has introduced a range of incentives to reward those with 100% attendance. Up to ten students per week are selected to receive a £10 bonus paid directly onto their NULC student card. In addition, two students per month receive £50 and a further two students per term are selected to receive £100, based on 100 per cent attendance and commitment to their course. ● To find out more about the range of financial support on offer at NULC for students of all ages, visit www.nulc.ac.uk/ finance

Local opportunities can avoid university costs STAYING local to study a degree-level qualification is proving increasingly popular for young people and adults. Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) is working in partnership with Staffordshire University to deliver Foundation degrees (Fds) and Foundation Years in a wide range of subjects from its bespoke University Centre. Janet Scrivens, Head of Lifelong Learning, said: "We're continually expanding the number of degree-level qualifications we offer, such as HNCs, HNDs and Foundation degrees, to ensure young people and adults have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Our University Centre has excellent facilities, including open-access PCs, group study areas and a comfortable social space. Students benefit from working closely with tutors and enjoy a friendly, supportive environment, designed especially for adults."

Foundation degrees are innovative courses designed with employers to combine academic study with work-based learning, allowing for flexible study in the workplace and at college. Foundation degrees can be studied full-time over two years or part-time over three years. At the end, students are awarded a Foundation degree and then have the option to complete a final year of study at a University of their choice to ‘top-up’ their qualification to a full BA Honours. The College currently has over 350 students studying Higher Education courses at the University Centre at the Knutton campus. ● To find out more about the range of University-level courses on offer at NULC visit www.nulc.ac.uk/he or contact the Information Point on 01782 254254.

Skills for life... making the most of college leads to inspirational stories

Women learning new skills prove Mum of three Rachel Davenport says learning at college has given her confidence.

MUM’S THE WORD R

ACHEL Davenport, aged 23 from Chesterton, is a mum of three and studies part-time at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) on a Skills for Life course. Having left school with no GCSEs, Rachel found both job opportunities and the chance to progress in life limited. Spurred on by having children, Rachel decided to return to education in 2011, where she now studies Maths 4 U and English 4 U. Rachel said:“Doing the course has helped me in more ways than I thought. Not only have I improved my literacy and numeracy skills but my self confidence has grown too. Before coming to college I was embarrassed and convinced people were laughing at me when I had to fill a form in or write anything in public. “But now I have more confidence in myself and I can also help my children with their homework and not feel embarrassed or like a fraud in front of other people!” Rachel added:“I needed to complete a course to improve my Maths and English in order to get a job. It’s as simple as that! Anyone sat at home wondering what to do with their life, I say just go for it and make that step back in to education, you won’t regret it!”

L

INDSAY Ramsell, aged 35 pictured above, from Hanley, is a single mum to 13-year-old Laura and also a full-time carer for her mum who suffers from COPD, Heart Failure and is also Diabetic.

‘‘

I would definitely encourage adults to go on a course if they want to develop their skills. Through NULC I have been able to gain qualifications that I thought were impossible for someone my age.

Basic skills can transform people’s lives, and student after student at NULC proves this simple fact. From learning skills for jobs to helping the children with their homework, there is so much to learn. Here we look at three adult learners who have grasped the opportunities available with both hands...

I’m also completing a Pre-Access course at the same time and plan to progress on to the Access to Higher Education course in September, which means I will be able to go on to University in the future.

J

AYNE Egginton, aged 47 from Shropshire, pictured below, has two children aged 16 and 12, and enrolled on the Skills for Life Numeracy course at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) in 2011. Jayne’s original motivation to improve her Maths skills was to support her children doing their homework and better understand their work. During her time at NULC, Jayne has also completed an NVQ Level 3 qualification for Teaching Assistants. Jayne has since been able to apply her new found understanding of Maths to her job role as a Teaching Assistant.“I have more confidence in maths now, so I can help the children in my class to reach their targets and give them a better understanding.” Returning to education in her

Lindsay Ramsell Lindsay enrolled at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) on Skills for Life Literacy and Numeracy courses in 2011. Lindsay explains why she decided to return to education:“Being a single parent means that all eyes are on you. The questions your child comes to you with, you can’t avoid. My daughter is now in high school and the homework questions get harder the older she gets. “So I knew that I was going to have to update my Numeracy and Literacy skills in order for my daughter to reach her potential.” Lindsay continues:“I’m also completing a Pre-Access course at the same time and plan to progress on to the Access to Higher Education course in September, which means I will be able to go on to University in the future.” Speaking about her experience at NULC, Lindsay said:“Studying at NULC is great, the atmosphere is relaxed, the tutors are supportive and approachable and there’s a dedicated space for adult learners. “I have so much more confidence in myself now, and they’ve shown me what I’m capable of achieving and constantly encouraged me to reach

my goals and then progress on to the next level.” She continues:“I’ve really got the education bug! “Every time I complete one course, I’m inspired to progress and achieve a higher qualification. I can’t wait for the day when I can turn around and say I’ve got a degree!”

‘‘

I have more confidence in myself and I can also help my children with their homework and not feel embarrassed or like a fraud in front of other people!

40s, Jayne was nervous but knew that in order to help both her own children and those in her class, she had to put her own concerns to the back of her mind. “It’s definitely daunting deciding to return to education, but recognising you need help isn’t a weakness.” “I would definitely encourage adults to go on a course if they want to develop their skills. Through NULC I have been able to gain qualifications that I thought were impossible for someone my age.” ● To find out more about the range of FREE maths and English courses at NULC contact the Information Point on 01782 254254 or info@nulc. ac.uk

Samantha has eyes on teaching job A YOUNG mum is hoping more adults will follow her example and return to learning to help them get on in life. Samantha McEvoyLove, aged 23 from Newcastle, is a married mum of three, who is studying the Access to Higher Education course at Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s (NULC) purpose-built University Centre. She returned to education to get the qualifications needed to achieve her dream of becoming a primary school teacher. She said:“The support from the College has been second to none. I’m given financial help through the bursary scheme which goes towards meals at college and equipment for my course, which is a great help and takes the pressure off. “NULC has the best reputation in the area; it’s got state-of-the-art facilities and such a welcoming atmosphere. I visited a number of local colleges and made a decision based on past success rates and the progression opportunities offered to students.” Samantha has been a student rep, representing the student voice at conferences and meetings. She has high hopes once she completes her studies at NULC, to go on to Manchester Metropolitan University to do a degree in Early Years Childhood Studies before taking a teaching qualification.

Amy scoops top national accolade A TRAINEE accountant is celebrating after she achieved some of the best results in the country in a professional accounting examination. Amy Saklatvala, aged 21 from Loggerheads, is studying part-time for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification while working full time. Amy scored 91% compared to the national average pass mark of 50%. Nationally only 38% of candidates achieve this pass rate, putting Amy in a privileged position. Sarah Champ, an Accounting lecturer at the College, said: “The national pass rate for the course is only 38%, so for one of our students to receive 91% is phenomenal.“ The College offers a number of professional accounting qualifications at its Knutton Lane campus, with new courses starting in September.

ROYAL INSPIRATION RH The Duke of York visited NULC to help promote the work of colleges in providing high quality apprenticeships, work-based learning and business skills development. After meeting local dignitaries in the College reception area, His Royal Highness was given a tour of the College by NULC Principal and Chief Executive Karen Dobson, accompanied by the Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Sir James Hawley. The visit formed part of The Duke of York’s work to encourage and inspire young people to develop the right skills, and to recognise and support the many apprenticeship schemes being developed as a part of the Government’s Skills and Innovation agenda. He told students he hoped the

H

College could help inspire them to “be more than you think you can be”. The Duke of York added: “I can assure all of you young people that you have a great deal more potential than you probably realise or understand. “Over the last 10 years I've been doing a huge amount for British business and I will continue to do so, because I believe in it, and I also believe you young people are the future of it.” The Duke visited the College’s £6 million Skills and Technology Centre and Mechanical Engineering Workshop. He talked to apprentices from companies including: Michelin, Goodwins International, ABB, JCB, Ibstock Brick, EMD (Electro-Motive Diesel), Ham Baker and TT Pumps and was given a demonstration of the

College’s Lincoln Electric VRTEX virtual welding machine, the only one of its kind in the area. The Duke of York then visited the construction workshops and awarded prizes to the winning team of bricklaying, joinery and painting and decorating students, who had been competing in the inaugural ‘Barratt Challenge’, in partnership with Britain’s largest house builder Barratt Homes. The final part of the tour saw His Royal Highness visit the College’s bespoke University Centre, where he met Foundation degree course leader Richard Hunter and viewed ‘live’ work produced for local businesses by students from the College’s graphics and digital media production courses. The Duke of York then unveiled a plaque to commemorate his visit in the College’s main

reception area and addressed the assembled audience of college students, staff and dignitaries before leaving. Principal Karen Dobson said: “I’m very pleased that the Duke's visit has shone a spotlight on the work that we are not necessarily well known for, in terms of our work for employers with apprenticeships and skills training.” “I am very proud of the staff that helped pull everything together and of course all the students who have done themselves real credit.” ● To view the official film from the Royal Visit go to the NULC YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/NewcastleU LymeCol

Bright sparks sign up for green energy courses THE College is helping local people to become more energy efficient through the launch of new part-time courses. The Photovoltaic (PV) courses, which teach people how to install solar panel technology and to be more green aware, will start in September 2012. The course has two options; one available to members of the public who are interested in becoming more green aware and making their homes more energy efficient and a second route for qualified electricians who want to upskill and learn how to install solar PV panels as part of their business. Paula Rowland, Curriculum Manager for Construction and Engineering, said: “Due to the growing demand for renewable energy in the domestic market it was an obvious choice to launch the new PV courses. “Renewable energy is a hot topic which

is here to stay especially with green requirements for new build properties.” The course is taught by the College’s highly qualified tutors at the £6 million dedicated Skills and Technology Centre on Knutton Lane which has a recently installed roof rig and working solar PV system where electricians can practice installation. The College is a keen follower of green technologies. Its £60 million campus includes a building management system for efficient control of heating, cooling, lighting and ventilation, sensors on taps to prevent excessive water use and a rainwater harvesting system. ● To find out more about part-time courses available from September – including Construction, Electrical, Horticulture and DIY programmes – turn to pages 8-14, contact 01782 254254 or email info@nulc.ac.uk

More and more sign up to social networks NULC is urging more people to sign up for information via social media. The College is at the forefront of digital communications in the education sector and has recently celebrated its 2000th ‘like’ on its official Facebook page. Helen Taylor-Yates, Digital Communications and PR Officer at NULC, said:“Digital communications have rapidly taken off in the past few years and NULC aims to be at the forefront of all new media developments. “More and more people are turning online when they require information. It’s convenient, quick and visual, which is exactly what people want nowadays. We invest a lot of time communicating to students and potential students via social media and it’s really paying off with our fan numbers increasing week on week.” In 2011, the College also launched its own Smartphone App which is free to download on Android and Apple platforms. The App includes valuable information which can be accessed whilst on the move. Bus maps, contact numbers, term dates and photo galleries are amongst popular features on the free App. The College currently operates a Twitter account, Facebook page, YouTube channel and Flikr account. Helen continued:“If you want to keep up-to-date with the latest news and events at NULC then you need to get online and start following us. We’re constantly Tweeting and posting photographs of events that are taking place.” Further to its successful venture in to social media, the College also operates 19 subject blogs which allow current students to record their progress and potential students to see the types of projects they can get involved in when they come to NULC. Helen comments:“The blogs are a really successful tool, which allow us to document the fantastic work that current students are producing and the type of community work and projects students are involved in.” ● To view the full range of links to NULC’s social media channels, visit www.nulc.ac.uk/blogs

Sam’s got what it takes to be a hairdressing success story SAM Jackson, aged 24 from Fenton, joined NULC in 2011 to study an NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing. He had come to NULC after studying performing arts and deciding on a career change. Even though he had no previous hairdressing experience, Sam knew he wanted to pursue a career in the industry and was keen to take on the challenge. He gained an Apprenticeship placement at Athene Salon in Longton where he works four days a week, with one day spent at College. Sam has completed his Apprenticeship and is now progressing to the NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing which he is also on schedule to complete in

record time. Sam said:“Starting a hairdressing qualification with no past experience was certainly daunting but as soon as walked in to the salon at College I felt right at home.” He continued:“The College have been incredibly supportive all the way through my Apprenticeship and when I was awarded Student of the Month it was great to be recognised for my hard work by the Principal. “I’m determined to succeed as a professional hairdresser and have benefitted from great training from inspirational staff at both the College and my placement.” Karen Hulme, lecturer in Hair and Beauty at NULC said:“Sam works and studies extremely hard, he has an exceptional gift for hairdressing and I know he will go far in his career.”

ORE employees at Staffordshirebased construction giant JCB received NVQ awards recently as part of a company-wide training initiative.

A group of eight employees has completed the NVQ Level 2 in Engineering Technical Support and were presented with certificates earlier this year as part of an awards ceremony at JCB Cab

Systems based in Rugeley. JCB approached NULC asking the College to develop a bespoke NVQ to fit with and accredit a Fundamental Skills training package being offered to JCB employees. Rob Owen, JCB Cab Systems Director/ General Manager, said: “As a company we like to invest in our workforce and provide them with a range of career opportunities.

“Staff have benefited enormously from receiving professional training. I’m extremely proud of them.” Newcastle-under-Lyme College Principal and Chief Executive Karen Dobson said:“This achievement at JCB yet again showcases the wealth of high quality, cost effective and flexible courses available to employers and demonstrates that colleges are uniquely placed to offer

affordable, effective training which fits around the needs of businesses.” She added:“Colleges play a vital role in building Britain’s future, providing a huge range of opportunities for individuals and businesses to build world class skills to strengthen our economy. “I hope JCB’s success will inspire other local employers to make use of the resources provided by the College to drive their businesses forward.”

Prison officer wins training award APPRENTICE Tanya Savage has been awarded a Personal Achievement Award in the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Apprenticeship Recognition Awards. Tanya, aged 23 from Stoke-on-Trent, undertook a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Custodial Care while working as a Prison Custody Officer at HMP Dovegate. Ray Duckworth, Contract Director HMP Dovegate, endorsed Tanya’s nomination and said:“Tanya is a dedicated and talented young PCO who has demonstrated a remarkable ability to learn and develop in her skills as an officer.” NULC is currently delivering the Custodial Care

Apprenticeship in three prisons – HMP Doncaster, HMP Dovegate and HMP Lowdham Grange. Tanya said:“I feel really honoured to be recognised and receive an award. “I have really enjoyed my course and have worked really hard to complete my apprenticeship. “The support I have received from both HMP Dovegate and Newcastle-under-Lyme College has been fantastic; I really appreciate the time and effort everyone has put into my education. “I’m now looking forward to a successful career as a Prisoner Custody Officer.”

Apprentices show benefits to businesses BUSINESSES across North Staffordshire are being urged to consider taking on an apprentice from one of the area’s leading training providers. NULC provides apprenticeships in more than a dozen areas including Accounting, Business and Administration, Construction, Childcare, Electrical Installation, Engineering, Hairdressing, Health and Social Care, Retail and IT. Last year the College reported a record increase in the number of people taking up an apprenticeship, resulting in a need for more employers to offer apprentice roles within their organisations. Kerry Bonfiglio-Bains, Managing Director of Newcastle-based recruitment agency Appointments Personnel, is one of more than 400 local employers who have employed an apprentice through the College. Kerry said:“I’d urge all local employers to consider hiring an apprentice, regardless of what sector they’re in. All the apprentices I have come in to contact with at NULC have been professional, dedicated and eager to learn.” Max Powell She added:“I was so impressed that I now regularly work with the College to provide talks and workshops to young people interested in business.” Kerry’s apprentice is Max Powell, aged 18 from Newcastle. Max is undertaking an Apprenticeship in Business Administration whilst gaining valuable experience at the recruitment agency. Max said:“I completed the Network to Work course at NULC before starting the apprenticeship, which taught me valuable skills like interview training, networking and CV writing. It really helped my confidence and the workshops gave me a very useful insight into the business sector.” He continued:“I thoroughly enjoy being an apprentice; I get to earn money whilst I’m learning in a real workplace environment. The College and my employer have been really supportive and I’ve learnt so much about the business environment already. In the future I hope to run my own business just like Kerry.” With an apprentice salary starting at around £97 per week, employers can benefit from an extra member of staff and receive ongoing support from an experienced apprenticeship assessor who will visit the apprentice in the workplace to minimise disruption to the business. Vicky Boulton-Clarke, Head of Employer Training at NULC, said:“I’d urge any businesses who are interested in recruiting an apprentice or who want to train an existing employee through the apprenticeship scheme to get in touch with the College’s apprenticeships team.”

Five-a-side raises cash for legend’s charity THE College and Sainsbury’s held a five-a-side tournament in aid of Gordon Banks’ charity. Each participating player, paid £2 and all proceeds went to Gordon Banks’ chosen charity, the Alzheimer’s Society. The day was based around the 2012 European Championships, and each squad got allocated a team from the tournament. Spain ended up winning a penalty shootout against Croatia in the final. Overall, the day was a huge success with over 100 students taking part.

Going the extra mile STAFF and students from across NULC took part in the Sport Relief Mile. The event was organised by NULC students and official 2012 Game Makers Bethany Wragg, aged 16 who studies AS Geography, Psychology, PE and Biology, Ross Thompson and Sam Botham, both 17, who study the BTEC Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science.

Fun day supports

LOCAL HOSPICE B TEC Level 3 Public Services students from Newcastleunder-Lyme College (NULC) organised a charity Fun Day in aid of the Douglas Macmillan Hospice. Kelly Handley, aged 18 from Sneyd Green, is in her first year studying Public Services at NULC. Kelly inspired her fellow students to raise money for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice after her step-father spent time at the Barlaston Road Hospice before dying from Cancer. Kelly said:“Obviously the Douglas Macmillan Hospice is a cause close to my heart. It costs approximately £8million per year to keep the hospice running, with the services being mainly paid for from voluntary income, so I’m really grateful that all the students decided to support the charity and raise money for such a worthy local cause.”

The event took place on Friday 1 June at the College’s main campus on Knutton Road with students inviting their families to take part in the day. The event was organised by BTEC Level 3 Public Services students as part of the teamwork and leadership module on their course. During the day there was a raffle with prizes including Alton Towers tickets and a personal shopping experience at Cheshire Oaks. There was a BBQ, live music provided by Music Technology students and Nail Art provided by the Transform Salon. Newcastle-underLyme Fire Station also attended the event with a fire engine and the Army also supplied a giant inflatable assault course to provide activities on the day. Jill Salt, Public Services Lecturer said:“Every year Public Services

students organise a charity event and last year students raised over £2500 in just one week for local charities. It’s great that the students are so keen to put back in to the local community.” Commenting on Kelly’s involvement in the event, Jill said:“Kelly’s had a particularly hard year but she’s not let her personal life affect her college work and she continues to be a real asset to the college. With the hard work and determination Kelly has shown towards the fundraising, I know she will go on to achieve great things in a career in Public Services.” BTEC Public Services is a vocational course which prepares students for a career in the uniformed forces. ● To find out more about studying a BTEC Public Services course at NULC visit www.nulc.ac.uk, call 01782 254254 or email info@nulc.ac.uk

Staff walk around the world in 100 days INTREPID staff from the College joined a virtual walk around the world in 100 days to raise money for charity. The 48 members of staff started the virtual walk in January and quickly covered 1527 miles, to take them part way across Romania. The generous staff members then covered a total of 24,902 miles by May, using pedometers to track their daily footsteps around the College. They also took extra exercise outside of work as they each needed to cover approximately five miles per day to reach their target on time.

The energetic team raised money for the North Staffs Special Olympics, part of the Special Olympics Great Britain team, which offer year-round sport training and competition opportunities for people with learning disabilities. The programme is designed to allow athletes of all ages and abilities to learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. Dance lecturer Faye Matthews undergoes her makeover.

F

ROM the moment Faye Matthews walked into the Transform Salon and Spa she felt that she was in professional hands. The dance lecturer had initially been nervous when asked by Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s hairdressing lecturers to be a model for a makeover. But she was only too happy to help the College-based salon to demonstrate its on-trend skills in giving clients access to the latest fashionable looks. Her hair was styled by experts who used a layering technique to take out volume and exaggerate the length, and was then dip-dyed to give the illusion of deep roots shaded through dark ash brown and copper to very blond ends. “We gave Faye a look familiar to followers of the catwalk and celebrity scene,” said Anthony Keates, the lecturer who cut and styled her hair together with colleague Amy Stott.“We used Matrix colours to achieve the look we had discussed with her during the consultation.” Faye, who teaches A Level students at the College, was also given a make-up makeover by Beauty Therapy Lecturer Laura Price who created a “1940s pin-up look with a modern edge” using MAC Cosmetics brow powder and a MAC palette of ash browns and metallic opal for the eyes. Afterwards a delighted Faye said:“I thought the salon was lovely – very professional and clean. There’s a modern feel with purple décor, and they have the latest products. “I was really pleased with my makeover. It’s made me look quite different and I received a lot of compliments.” The Transform Salon and Spa, which is situated on the ground floor of the College, is open to the general public as well as College staff and students. Run by NVQ Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy trainees – around half of them adults - who are fully supervised at all times by qualified tutors with vast industry experience, the salon and spa offers a range of services from a quick manicure to a new hair style or relaxing massage. From September, the salon will operate for two days a week (Wednesday and Friday) with Academy status when it will be staffed by high-achieving Academy students, and for the other three days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) as a Commercial Training venue. “On the Academy days our more capable learners who have aspired to meet the industry standards will provide a more rounded and professional experience,” said Anthony, Curriculum Manager for Hair and Beauty and Holistic Therapy.“On the other days clients will be served in a training centre environment, at a vastly reduced rate.” SUMMER OPENING TIMES (FROM JULY 17 TO AUGUST 24): Tuesday and Wednesday 10am-4pm TIMES FROM SEPTEMBER: Monday-Thursday 9.15am-7.45pm. THE College hosted a charity football match at the Britannia Stadium in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. World Cup legend Gordon Banks and former Port Vale boss John Rudge captained the teams, which were made up of 20 NULC Academy of Sport students and 10 staff members from the College. The match was open to staff, students and the public with spectators paying a donation of £1 at the turnstiles. Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager at NULC said:“The match was organised as an incentive for the Academy of Sport students and to reward them for all the hard work and commitment they show to both the College and their chosen sport.”

Players needed to raise a minimum of £20 sponsorship to take part on the day and the team that raised the most money was awarded home team status, with the opportunity to use the Stoke City home changing rooms and wear the Stoke City strip. Trevor added:“Gordon

Banks is a great supporter of NULC and regularly gives his time to come along to college events and meet students. “We wanted to give something back so all sponsorship money and proceeds from the event will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Society, which is Gordon’s

chosen charity.” ● Our picture shows student players with soccer legend Gordon Banks and Stoke City Director of Football John Rudge. Inset, action from the game.

SPLASHING Olympic selection N

EWCASTLE-under-Lyme College (NULC) is celebrating after one of its staff members has been selected to work for the official London 2012 Medical Team. Sports Therapy lecturer Anthony Bosson submitted an application back in October 2010 and has fought off strong competition from over 250,000 applicants to be selected this month. Talking about the selection process Anthony said:“I had to attend a series of interviews which assessed my knowledge, application and practical skills in relation to sports injury and sports massage therapy. Finally all successful applicants had to attend a test event, for example the British Swimming Championships to demonstrate their ability to perform at major events.” Anthony, aged 42 from Lichfield, works at the College as a lecturer for the Sport Department delivering VTCT Level 3 and 4 Diplomas in Sports Massage, and BTEC Sport and Exercise Science specialising in Sports Massage and Sports Injuries. As a busy member of staff at NULC, Anthony also works as a Sports Therapist for the NULC Academy of Sport and provides sports injury rehabilitation for the Academy’s Elite Athletes who compete at regional and national level. Anthony explains his role during the Olympics:“I’ll be working for the official 2012 Medical Team based in the Athletes Village, which is at the heart of the Olympic Park. I’ll also be seconded to the Aquatics Centre for the swimming and water polo games. My key responsibilities will be the assessment and treatment of sports injuries including the provision of sports massage therapy to all Olympic athletes.” Commenting on how the experience

will help his career Anthony says:“Above all, I will gain immense fulfillment and increased motivation to achieve further success. The experience will also be conveyed to our students at NULC to encourage them to identify their own aspirations and achieve their dreams.“ Anthony is fast becoming a recognisable face amongst students at NULC for his achievements in the sporting arena:“On hearing the good news, the students have been very pleased for me, in fact some have already got the motivation bug to achieve big things for themselves. It’s great for them to see that local people can achieve great things in their careers.” He continues:“My colleague Shelly Brown and her team are outstanding and exceptionally supportive in everything

I’m involved with at NULC. The College are building a great reputation for sporting achievements and I’m proud to be apart of the 2012 sporting legacy.” Summing up the achievement of his role in the 2012 Olympics Anthony says: “Sport is my passion and Sports Therapy has provided invaluable opportunities for me to work at European and World Championship level, but the Olympic Games is a pinnacle in my career and it doesn’t get any better than getting to work on world class athletes on your home soil.” ● To find out more about Sports Therapy courses at NULC visit www.nulc.ac.uk or contact the Information Point on 01782 254254 or info@nulc.ac.uk
