Lifelong Learning Donna takes leap into new job after Steps 2 Work drive DONNA Cooke, aged 45, had been out of work and claiming benefits since 2007. She was originally referred to the College by the JobCentre and enrolled onto the Steps 2 Work programme which is designed to get unemployed adults back into work. Donna successfully completed her course and got a job at Rowan Court care home in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Donna has completed a Level 1 qualification in Health and Social Care and is hoping to achieve a Level 2 qualification on completion of her induction period. Donna said:“The Steps 2 Work programme has changed my life, it opened the doors to employment and now that I am employed I can afford to buy and run a car.” Donna continued: “The biggest challenge I faced was getting a job in the health and social care sector without experience. I started at Rowan Court on a placement which helped me gain some experience and I was extremely grateful when I was offered a permanent position there.” When asked what she would say to other people in a similar position who are considering taking ‘the leap’ back into education, Donna said: “Go for it! You can gain a lot and if it wasn’t for Newcastle-under-Lyme College I would still be unemployed.”

DIGNITY IN CARE N

EWCASTLE-under-Lyme College championed dignity in care by supporting Dignity Action Day. The College hosted an afternoon Digni-tea event to promote positive aspects of quality in care. The event was held in conjunction with Staffordshire County Council and Carematch, with Health and Social Care employers from across the county being invited to come along and show their support for dignity in care. Jane Tunnicliff, Business Development Manager at the College, said:“Holding the Digni-tea event was a key way for the College, as a centre of excellence, to promote dignity in care which is at the forefront of all our training within the College and the workplace.” Amanda Ashworth, Midlands Area Officer at Skills for Care, said:“Skills for Care recognises that one of the prime routes to improvement, lies in the continued development of a quality workforce that truly understands what dignity means and places it at the very heart of care services.” The College offers a variety of bespoke training courses for employers in the Health and Social Care industry as well as industry recognised

qualifications for individuals who want to pursue a career in Health and Social Care including Dementia Awareness, Equality and Diversity and Infection Control as well as courses such as Supporting Individuals with Learning Difficulties.

Higher Education Courses

College supports

RETURNING TO LEARN: Carol Ashley has a new lease of life thanks to studying a psychology degree at NULC.

ACCESS TO HE I

F you’re aged 19 or over and want to study at university level but do not have the necessary qualifications to do so, we offer an Access to Higher Education (AtHE) Diploma. The course is an ideal stepping stone and allows students to prove they are ready to progress onto a higher level course. There are three Access to HE Diploma Pathways available to choose from: ● Health for those interested in studying nursing, midwifery and other health related careers. ● Social Sciences for those interested in law, probation, social work, youth work, abuse studies and social science degrees. ● Education for those wanted to pursue literature degrees and teaching.

Course Structure The course is structured so that all students will study core subjects, including Study Skills at Level 3, which will teach the skills that are required to successfully achieve the Access to HE Diploma as well as future study at university level. Students may also study either English, maths, or science at GCSE equivalent level. As students are only able to study one GCSE level subject within the Access course, they must check carefully what GCSEs are needed for their eventual higher education course.

Entry Requirements There are no formal entry requirements for Access to HE but students need to demonstrate that they can work well at Level 2 in literacy (GCSE standard) and at least Level 1 in numeracy. There are three steps to entry: ● An introductory session where literacy and numeracy levels are assessed. ● A Pre-Access course which prepares them for the Diploma course. ● The Diploma course which starts in September 2014.

Available loans Anyone aged 24 or over applying for the Access to Higher Education Diploma will be able to apply for a loan to help cover the cost of the course. The loan is easy to apply for, household income is not taken into account, there are no credit checks and you pay nothing until your income is over £21,000 per year. And if you progress onto and complete a higher education course, your loan will be written off. Please apply online to attend an introductory session by visiting www.nulc.ac.uk

Studying for degree gives Carol a new lease of life CAROL Ashley worked in the leisure industry for nearly 30 years before losing her job.“I lost my last job through ill-health and then I lost my confidence and all motivation. “I reached a point where I was unsure of what to do with my life. I felt that I needed more than just going back to previous job roles so I attended some community learning class and actually enjoyed learning.” Having enjoyed the community learning classes, Carol decided to take the leap back into formal education and enrolled on the BSc Hons Psychology with Foundation Year at NULC. The Foundation year is a full-time

I WOULD TELL ANYONE WHO IS CONSIDERING RETURNING TO EDUCATION TO JUST DO IT. IT’S A CLICHÉ BUT YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD.

course that lasts one full academic year. “I had concerns about returning to education, mainly financial ones, but my family have been incredibly supportive and this was an opportunity too good to pass up.” The Foundation year in Psychology takes a modular format. The modules' aims are to give a foundation of psychological knowledge and also the IT and study skills that you will require to be successful at degree level. “The biggest reward has been finding out that I can actually do this! I’m not out of my depth and my grades are good. I’ve really enjoyed having a purpose in my life again. The feeling I get from knowing I’m achieving something I never thought I could, is second to none. “It was quite daunting coming to college knowing that I would probably be one of the oldest in the class and I had concerns about balancing my health and my studies but I would tell anyone who is considering returning to education to just do it. It’s a cliché but you’re never too old – the teaching and support here at NULC has been fantastic.” To find out more about studying the BSc Hons Psychology with Foundation Year at NULC visit www.nulc.ac.uk/he

ESME Talbot studied the BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Newcastle-under-Lyme College, specialising in ceramics. “The course gave me confidence in my abilities and helped me to build a mass of artistic skills,” she explained. She then progressed to Loughborough University School of Art and completed

a degree in Fine Art. “My practice has always been varied, never settling fully on one medium. After many years working in retail in supervisory roles I decided to set up my own business. “That’s when Scruffy Little Herbert was born. I saw a gap in the market for products based around local pride and instilling this identity and pride into new generations.

“The NULC M.A.D.E. Here shop has been an excellent business and artistic learning curve for me. Sales have been so successful that I now run Scruffy Little Herbert full time and my time is dedicated to growing the brand and business.” If you want to follow in Esme’s footsteps and explore your creative side turn to page 7 to see the range of creative courses available.
