don’t know about where you live, but up here at Chorley in Lancashire it’s been pretty parky to say the least! My road test editor Trevor Gehlcken has been laughing at me via our numerous Skype conversations as he lives in Essex – and he hasn’t seen a flake of snow this year. But it’s no laughing matter if you run a business that relies on a van and that van doesn’t want to start in the morning. I’ve seen it all up here – jump starts, bump starts and no starts – while the van owners curse and swear at their bad luck. Well, mostly it’s their own fault, sadly, and they pay the price. How many times in the pages of this magazine have I banged on about the importance of maintaining your vans properly? But it seems that while the canny ones take heed, there are still a good number of idiots who don’t. And it is those people who are likely to appear at the end of the dole queue soon because it doesn’t take much for a small business to be ruined if the owner doesn’t turn up for a job or a few parcel deliveries are missed. Nowadays many garages offer service packages when you buy new vans and I urge you all to take advantage of them – they spread the service cost over the course of a number of years and will pay for themselves over time.

he RAC is calling on the Government to reduce the legal blood-alcohol limit in England and Wales after the majority of drivers backed change. While the 80mg (milligrams) of alcohol per 100ml (millilitres) of blood limit has been in place since a legal maximum was introduced, Scotland took the decision to cut to 50mg in December 2014 and Northern Ireland is in the process of doing the same. England and Wales are not only lagging behind their neighbours, says the RAC, but are also out of kilter with the rest of Europe where, with few exceptions, 50mg per 100ml is the legal limit. On questioning 1,727 motorists over the issue of whether the limit should be lowered, research for the 2017 Report on Motoring found six in 10 (59%) supported a reduction in England and Wales. Of those, 38% said they would like to see the drink-drive limit reduced to 50mg across the whole of the UK while 21% would prefer it to go lower still to 20mg. From a list of 23 common motoring concerns cited in the research, drivers under the influence of drink was ranked as the joint fifth biggest worry. In addition, almost a quarter (24%) of motorists surveyed listed drivers under the influence of drink as one of their top four concerns.

where one of the drivers or riders was impaired by alcohol. In both years 143 people lost their lives in such accidents and very similar numbers did so in the years in between. While reported road casualty data from Transport Scotland show accidents involving alcohol were actually higher in 2015 than 2014, new statistics are due to published later this month which should enable a more accurate analysis of the impact of the legal limit reduction. Data from Police Scotland, however, shows that in the nine months after the new limit was introduced in December 2014 the number of drink-driving offences fell by 12.5% compared with the same period the previous year, with the total number of offences dropping from 4,208 to 3,682. The call from the RAC to reduce the drink-drive limit comes 50 years after the roadside test was introduced. RAC road safety spokesman Pete Williams said: “Motorists are overwhelmingly in favour of reducing
the current drink-drive limit in England and Wales to no more than 50mg as Scotland has already done and Northern Ireland is doing.
Time to move “Fifty years after the drink-drive limit became law, it is time for the Government to move with the times and fall in line with the large sway of other countries which enforce a 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood limit with the aim of cutting the number of accidents that occur due to drivers being under the influence of alcohol. “The benefits of the lower limit in Scotland picture will be clearer when the 2016 reported road casualty data is published later this month, but should a drop in drink-related accidents at the wheel be seen then, this should be evidence enough to trigger a change in the law. “And, even if it doesn’t, can we really afford not to follow the majority who operate a 50mg limit if there is even the slightest chance that it will lead to fewer lives being lost or ruined?”

Stiffer sentences ahead for drivers who kill while on the phone Dangerous drivers who kill while using their mobile phones or speeding could now get life sentences under a change to sentencing. Introduced following a consultation by the Ministry of Justice, the move means that drivers who cause death by speeding, racing, or using a mobile phone could face sentences equivalent to manslaughter, with maximum penalties raised from 14 years to life. Offenders who cause death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs will also face life sentences and
a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving will be created, “to fill a gap in the law and reflect the seriousness of some of the injuries suffered by victims in this category of case” according to Justice Minister Dominic Raab. The new legislation was welcomed by road safety charity IAM RoadSmart – but it warned that the threat of jail alone is unlikely to make people drive in a less dangerous way. Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart director of policy and research, said: “We feel that visible policing and a high likelihood of
being caught, is the surest way of making people drive better. If people don’t think they will be caught, they simply won’t drive in a safer way.” He added: “It is also vital that courts reflect society’s view on the impact of dangerous driving and use the maximum available sentences – something they have so far not demonstrated on a consistent basis. While a toughening of the law might make people feel better, on its own it is sadly unlikely to reduce the number of cases of really selfish driving which end in tragic results.”

A
comprehensive vehicle history is the number one factor for trade buyers when acquiring used cars and vans online, new research from epyx shows. This factor was named by 88% of those surveyed, followed by the ability to choose from a wide range of vehicles on 80%, minimising auction fees on 68%, access to a large number of brands in on 63% and access to expert account management on 47%. Vicky Gardner, remarketing commercial manager at epyx, said: “These results give what we believe is a really accurate snapshot of how trade buyers view online buying at the moment. What they want is an excellent choice of stock, backed with strong provenance and low fees. It is all about getting high quality vans onto their website and forecourt at minimum cost.” The majority of the 157 people surveyed – 52% – tend to use both online and physical auctions, although a substantial number
– 43% – use online only. Vicky continued: “We have been seeing an ongoing shift towards online buying. The advantages are just too strong for most trade buyers to ignore, although most also continue to like to visit physical auctions on a regular basis because of the ‘feel’ that it gives them for the current state of the market.” The research was carried out by epyx in support of its 1link Disposal Network platform, where almost 2,000 trade buyers gain
exclusive access to an extensive range of quality ex-fleet, leasing and manufacturer vehicles from major fleets and manufacturers. Vicky said: “We are seeing use of 1link Disposal Network increase massively on a month-by-month basis and this is happening because the platform ticks all of these boxes. “It is not only one of the longestestablished and best-known trade sites but it has been continually developed to meet the needs of dealers today.”

mercedes-benz joins the fray with scrappage and swappage scheme

ercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd has launched a ‘Scrappage and Swappage’ programme to enable van owners and operators to change their older model vans for cleaner EU6 models that have the latest technological advancements. In recent times there have been high-profile reports of the damaging effects of older diesel engines on the environment and, in addition, many larger cities are looking at introducing charges for these vehicles entering their central zones, which has prompted MercedesBenz Vans UK to launch a Scrappage and Swappage programme to provide a solution for this. For owners of EU1-EU3 vehicles, the scrappage programme gives customers the opportunity to get a new Mercedes-Benz van or an EU6 Approved Used vehicle, while their old van is scrapped. The Scrappage programme offers customers a deposit contribution of between £1,000 and £5,600, depending on the model (ex-VAT). The swappage programme is aimed at both retail and small fleets of up to 24 EU4-EU5 vans. These customers will be able to ‘swap’ these older vehicles for a new, EU6 Mercedes-Benz van with the support of an additional

he appeal of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ allnew Crafter has widened, with a raft of new model derivatives now available to order in Van Centres across the UK. Panel vans with 4MOTION all-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox are now available, along with open body models in single and double-cab variants. At its launch at the Commercial Vehicle Show last April, front-wheel drive versions with gross vehicle weights up to 3.5 tonnes were available with three engines and a manual gearbox. The expansion of the range sees available weights now up to 5.0 tonnes. The addition of open body models to the range opens the door to conversions via Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Recognised Converter scheme, meaning customers in the market for a Luton, dropside, tipper or other more unusual adaptations have the perfect base

vehicle. Further derivatives will continue to join the lineup in 2018, including a 122 PS engine which will join the current 102, 140 and 177 PS powertrain options. The all-new Crafter, which is built at an all-new factory in Wrzesnia, Poland, and designed from the bottom up to meet the needs of van operators, now offers maximum flexibility as well as a comprehensive suite of innovative technologies. As on all Volkswagen vans, the Crafter comes as standard with autonomous emergency braking and automatic post-collision braking systems – a first in the van sector. Cross wind assist (for closed bodies) and a driver alert system are also standard. Prices for the entry-level panel van start at £24,640 (basic RRP ex- VAT). The starting price for the Crafter with eight-speed automatic gearbox is £30,385; £30,590 for rear-wheel drive; and £34,145 for 4MOTION fourwheel drive.

Firms face £1.2bn hike in prices to drive in London If traders who drive in London think they have it bad now – things could soon get a LOT worse. Plans are afoot to introduce pay-per-mile road pricing in London, which would see road charges hike up by 90%, new research suggests. The report by Tony Devenish of the GLA Conservatives assesses the cost of road pricing to Londoners after TfL’s recentlypublished draft Transport Strategy – out for consultation until October – set out a target to reduce total London traffic by 10-15% by 2041, including through the possibility of road pricing. The draft plans propose building on the forthcoming introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone and the T-charge by looking at latest forms of road user charging, including a pay-per-mile charge to address both congestion and emissions objectives. However, according to Tony, charging drivers 8 pence per mile – a figure mooted in a recent report by the Centre
for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) on ‘How to Abolish Traffic Jams’ – would cost motorists an additional £1.2bn per annum and would have a detrimental impact on small businesses. Volkswagen Caddy Highline 1.4TSi 125 As diesel continues to fall out of favour, we take on a petrol-powered Caddy for a six-month appraisal. Trevor Gehlcken reports
T
he pendulum of public opinion is well known for swinging back and forth on a regular basis. Take eggs for example. In my lifetime they have been deemed alternately good for you and bad for you several times over (remember the Edwina Currie egg scandal of 1988 anyone?) But surely nowhere does that fickle pendulum swing more fiercely than in the field of vehicle emissions. At one time petrol was demonised against LPG, then we had a supposed saviour in diesel and now we’re back to petrol as the favourite again, along with hybrids and electric vans. And that’s not even mentioning the hydrogen fuel-cell. If the Government is to be believed, we’ll all be driving electric vans by 2040, but in the ensuing 27 years, what is the environmentally-aware van operator supposed to do to satisfy both his or her finance bosses and the general public at the same time?

Electric vans at present are pretty much a no-no if they need to travel more than about 80 miles in a day, so surely petrol will be the fuel of choice for longer trips? If you think that, then try finding a petrol van to buy and you’ll be pretty short of choices. There are none at all on offer at 3.5 tonnes – and precious few under that. Which brings us rather nicely round to our latest long-term test van, the Volkswagen Caddy petrol.
Caught on the hop All the van manufacturers have been rather caught on the hop by this new love affair with petrol and it’s hats off to Volkswagen for trying to right this ‘wrong’ as soon as possible by offering not only the Caddy in petrol format but now the Transporter too. Our test van is the top-spec Caddy Highline variant, sporting a 1.4-litre petrol powerplant offering a meaty 125PS and 220Nm of torque at between 1,500-3,500rpm, which should give this van plenty of oomph on the road. Official fuel consumption figure on the combined cycle is 48.7mpg and basic price is £17,735 ex-VAT. Ignoring the environmental credentials for a moment and looking purely in financial terms, it is reckoned that anything under about 20,000 miles and the petrol model wins out against the diesel equivalent, owing to its cheaper front-end price and the lower cost of petrol against diesel. After that, the diesel Caddy begins to win the day, increasingly so as the miles clock up. So our long-termer is only going to be the choice for any

BEHIND THE WHEEL
Smooth operator We quite often comment in our various road tests about how smooth the latest diesel engines are, but it’s not until you actually swop for a petrol variant that you realise what the word ‘smooth’ really means. This van is so whisper quiet that on a couple of occasions I have mistakenly thought that the engine had stalled. And talk about standard specification! In my 25 years of testing commercial vehicles, things have moved on at a staggering rate and the Caddy boasts a spec sheet that would have been unheard of even for a Rolls-Royce all that time ago. Firstly we have to take our hats off to Volkswagen for making its ‘Front Assist With City Emergency Braking’ system standard on all its vans. Basically what this system does is to slam the anchors on in the event of an anticipated crash up to 30mph. We’ve tested in on the track in the past and it really is a major step forward in the safety stakes. But the Caddy doesn’t rest there. It also boasts an automatic post-collision braking system, brake assist, anti-lock braking system (ABS), automatic hazard light activation under emergency braking, driver and passenger front and curtain airbags, electric seatbelt tensioners, electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), electronic dfferential lock (EDL), electronic stabilisation programme (ESP) and engine drag torque
control (MSR). Phew! Next time sometime tells me that Volkswagen vans are rather expensive to buy, I’ll reel off that list to explain why. In the cab, the standard goodies continue. Unlike most of the rivals, which charge anything up to a grand for a built-in satnav system, this Caddy has one as standard, along with a USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 compatible CD drive, climatic air-conditioning and cruise control. And that’s just picking out the best items. If we ran a total list of the standard spec, it would fill this page up and more. This Caddy was built especially for Trade Van Driver magazine so the lads and lasses in the VW PR office added a few extras for us as well. That snazzy paint job, together with extra quality black upholstery, adds £492, a winter pack, including headlight washers, heated washer jets, washer fluid level indicator, heated driver and passenger seats and electric auxiliary air heater, adds £582 and a rubber load compartment floor completes the extras.

The new all-electric light duty model is now on test with several big fleets in Germany. Matthew Eisenegger reports

aimler Trucks has handed over the first units of its all-electric FUSO eCanter to European customers. The logistics companies DHL, DB Schenker, Rhenus and Dachser, will now use the lightduty truck on their fleets. FUSO has already strengthened its commitment to alternative drivetrains. Over the next few years all truck and bus models will offer one additional electric variant. Marc Llistosella, head of Daimler Trucks Asia, which owns FUSO, explains: “With the FUSO eCanter we are delivering the first all-electric truck in series production to our customers in Europe. Over 90,000 kilometers of testing in everyday operating conditions secure that we hand over a reliable and economical vehicle to our customers. With the FUSO eCanter our customers now
operate not only quietly and without locally-emitted CO2, they also save money on operating costs. This is the future of urban distribution transport.“
Various areas of operation The customers are all in the logistics business, but the trucks’ areas of operation are divers. All customers are putting the vehicles to work that is usually carried out with conventional drive trains. The customer’s decision for the FUSO eCanter was influenced by factors such as noise and emission reduction, fleet-sustainability but also by economical reasons. The drivers of the FUSO eCanter will be schooled to operate the vehicle. The customers obtain their vehicles via a 24-month long-term rental from CharterWay, Daimler’s own rental and leasing expert in the commercial vehicle business. Deutsche Post DHL will use its six vehicles in two important business divisions: two vehicles will do inner city delivery runs of business and private customers of DHL Freight’s Berlin branch, for heavy individual cargo, such as electrical or large household appliances. DHL Paket will use four vehicles for the delivery of goods to businesses and corporate clients. For this the electric trucks will be fully-integrated in existing business processes and will replace the vehicles with conventional drive trains which were used so far. DB Schenker chose the FUSO eCanter consciously. The new vehicles give DB Schenker an opportunity to test a series production electric vehicle for inner city logistics under real life production
what do we think? We were offered a short run around the scenic city of Berlin. Like all major European cities, traffic is a problem and when the traffic does move, the eCanter accelerates at a pace to match any car. One of the bonus points of running electric vehicles is that max power and torque are on demand instantly. A range of 100Kms or just over 60 miles in old money sounds a bit on the low side but if you take a look at the type of

operator this truck is aimed at – mainly parcel delivery – it fits the bill perfectly. Payload has always been and issue because of the extra weight of the batteries, but with a figure of over four tonnes from a vehicle with a plated weight of 7.49 tonnes, that’s not bad. While on the road, the other feature that becomes noticeable is the vehicle’s electric regeneration capability that replaces the traditional engine brake, so
with a little practice the eCanter can be operated safely with only the minimum of use of the service brakes, bringing down operating costs. The noise level in the cab is kept to the absolute minimum – no diesel engine roaring away under the seats when pulling away, just a slight and very distant hum of the electric motor coming to life, which makes the cab a relaxed and pleasant place to carry out a day’s work.
conditions. Among other tasks, one of the three trucks will deliver and collect general cargo in the inner city of Berlin. Rhenus Group, a globally-operating provider of logisitcs, will use the three FUSO eCanters within its home delivery unit. From the central warehouse in Hoppegarten, the all-electric trucks will deliver furniture, consumer electronics, home appliances and heavy sport equipment to the inner city of Berlin. Two more FUSO eCanters will be driving for the transport company Dachser. Their job will be the general goods transportation core business on the last mile, meaning pallets with industrial goods either at micro-hubs or goods will be delivered directly to the customer, as well as collecting goods and delivering them to the Dachser-branches. This is where they recharge overnight at a high-voltage loading station on the branches‘ grounds.
Tech spec Depending on body and field of application, the eCanter has a load-bearing capacity of up to 4.5 tonnes. The vehicle‘s electric power train contains six high-voltage lithium-ion batteries with each 420 V and 13.8 kWh. Instead of a diesel, an electric drive train
with a strong permanent-magnet-engine delivers 129 kW (180 hp) via a single-gear transmission in the rear axle. 285Nm of continuous output allows the truck to accelerate almost like a passenger car. The maximum speed of the eCanter is limited to 80 kilometers per hour. The batteries with a total weight of 600 kilograms allow a range of over 100 kilometres and so surpass in many cases the daily distance normally covered in light distribution transport. A similar initiative will be launched in the UK in spring with many high profile operators. Watch this space – we’ll be reporting in future issues

he Ford Transit Custom has been a fantastic success story for the blue oval since its introduction in 2012. Now Ford has launched an upgraded model which is due to be rolled out across the UK this spring. Powered by Ford’s EcoBlue 2.0-litre diesel engine, Transit Custom has been re-engineered to offer significant new features and capabilities including a new ECOnetic van variant delivering improved fuel efficiency and 148g/km CO2 emissions. Sporting a bold new front-end design with three-bar Transit grille, Ford’s one-tonne van provides drivers with the ideal mobile office environment, featuring a completely new cabin that offers best-in-class stowage, improved comfort and ergonomics and easy connectivity with SYNC 3 or MyFord Dock options. up to 13 per cent and low-end torque enhanced by 20 per cent. The updated model also offers a new ECOnetic variant that delivers 148g/km CO2 emissions and return a combined 49.6mpg, a further 6 per cent improvement over the most efficient current vehicle. Available for the 300 Series short wheelbase van, the ECOnetic variant features the 105 PS engine with a unique calibration and Auto-Stop-Start, low rolling resistance tyres, Ford’s innovative Acceleration Control feature and a fixed 62mph speed limiter. The new Transit Custom continues to offer commercial vehicle operators the same outstanding breadth of capabilities from a vehicle line-up that includes two roof heights, two wheelbase options, a gross vehicle mass range from 2.6 tonnes to 3.4 tonnes offering payloads up to 1450kg and bodystyles including van, kombi and double-cab-in-van. The new model maintains the Transit reputation for delivering class-leading load-carrying ability, with innovative loadspace features such as the load-through hatch in the bulkhead for extra-long items and the integrated roof rack that can be folded away when not in use.

Advanced technology and driver assistance features New Transit Custom is the first commercial vehicle to offer Intelligent Speed Assist, a feature that could help prevent drivers from exceeding speed limits.
The system enables automatic adjustment of maximum vehicle speed to remain within legal limits, using the Traffic Sign Recognition system to detect speed limit signs. Drivers activate Intelligent Speed Assist via steering wheel controls to set a maximum vehicle speed. The new model is the first Ford van in Europe to offer Ford’s Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert, which provides two key functions for commercial vehicle users. The Blind Spot Information System uses rear-facing radar sensors to detect when passing vehicles may have entered or are approaching the blind spot zone and alerts the driver with a warning light in the corresponding door mirror. The Transit Custom introduces a new Variable Rear Range feature, which provides drivers with an earlier warning if it detects that the passing vehicle is approaching with a higher closing speed. Cross Traffic Alert uses the same sensors to warn drivers reversing out of a parking space of vehicles or bicycles that may soon be crossing behind them, alerting them with an audible warning, a message in the instrument cluster and a warning light in the door mirror. Activated when drivers select reverse gear, the system is ideal for vans that often have restricted visibility to the rear and sides when exiting a parking space. New Transit Custom also brings enhanced capabilities to the Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection emergency braking system introduced to the model in 2016. Equipped with the latest radar and camera technologies as fitted to the all-new Fiesta passenger car, the system is now even capable of detecting pedestrians at night when they are illuminated by the vehicle’s headlamps.

With so many dodgy characters on the roads nowadays, fitting a dashcam in your van is a must. Trevor Gehlcken reports
I
f you drive anywhere in the course of your work nowadays, you don’t need me to tell you what a crazy old business it is. There are more laws and regulations than you can shake a stick at, GATSO cameras galore, idiots trying to cut you up right, left and centre and of course the spectre of a slam-on always lurking in the background. It’s hardly surprising that they can’t get enough lorry drivers in Britain – at least us van guys aren’t bimbling along at 56mph. But the more tricks and scams there are on the road, the better the technology has become to try and prevent them. And one of the pieces of kit that has done more than any other to prevent innocent drivers from being caught up in some illegal shenenigans is the dashboard camera – or dashcam for short. There are any number on the market at present and they go from tens to hundreds of pounds in price. But in our view, anyone who travels on the roads for business purposes would be mad NOT to have one of these little beauties in their screen. We’ve tested a couple of them in the past and have been pretty impressed with what they offer – but the variant we have on trial here is the Vision Track VTGo+. We bumped into the guys from Vision Track at the CV Show last April and after chewing the fat for a few minutes, they suggested we tried out one of their dashcams – an offer we couldn’t refuse. Our VTGo+ retails at £129.99 inc VAT, which is a small price to pay for the peace of mind it gives while out on the roads.
But the big question was this – – could an old groaner like me, who is fast approaching retirement age and looking forward to joining the local Darby and Joan Club later in the year, make it all work

without tearing out what little is left of my hair. Well, I’ll tell you how easy it was. I may be approaching 65 but I’m also pretty techsavvy, having been using an Apple Mac to design various magazines since 1990, so the VTGo+ should be a cinch. My first mistake was assuming it worked via a computer, like the other models I had tested in the past. No chance – it’s all connected via smartphone nowadays.
I have an iPad and a Samsung phone and tried the iPad first, but no luck Trying to download the app on my phone, I discovered that I didn’t actually have a Google Play account as I use this particular gadget purely for phone calls and checking my emails while abroad. However, I set up an account easily and within a few minutes I had the app on my phone, free of charge. Then it was simply a matter of sticking all the little bits together, putting it in the windscreen and bob’s your uncle. I may be tech savvy but I’m still old enough to marvel at how all this wonderful technology works. And leaving the unit plugged in on my driveway and going indoors, I must admit to letting out a: “Bugger me, Linda, look at this!” to my partner (that’s her in the picture) as a lovely hi-tech view of my house hove into view on the phone. On a practical note, the camera is small enough to avoid any blotting out of important areas of the windscreen, although you don’t get anything to tape the wire round the side of the windscreen so it doesn’t dangle in front of you. I found that duct tape does the trick. So that’s it. The camera buzzes away quietly on its own – and if something dodgy happens, you can download it on to your phone, edit the footage and share it with friends via facebook etc. A great piece of kit all round.

van drivers ditch old image Healthy diets and exercise are now the norm, says survey
N
ew research shows Britain’s van drivers are ditching their stereotypical lifestyle in favour of healthy eating and regular trips to the gym. Despite ‘white van man’ being labelled with a junk food-loving, exercise-shy image, many are now more likely to be found tucking into a healthy lunch and heading to the gym at the end of the day. According to the research, the average van driver will work out twice a week, with more than one in 10 heading to the gym at least five times a week. And instead of grabbing whatever they can on the go, one in seven will make their own packed lunch so they know exactly what they will be eating. One in 10 also claims to eat a very healthy diet of fruit, vegetables and salad while on the road.
Healthier lifestyles A spokesman for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, which commissioned the research, said: “This research seems to show that nowadays, van drivers are leading a much healthier lifestyle than you might expect. “Rather than grabbing whatever they can while out on the road, they are tucking into homemade lunches of salad and fruit – a far cry from the food you might expect them to be eating.” Researchers from Onepoll. com also found that four in 10 (41 per cent) of van drivers will swap sugary and salty snacks for salads and fruit as they try to eat as healthily as possible, despite being out and about for the majority of their day. And more than three quarters do at least one form of exercise every week, with those in the West Midlands the most active, working out an average of three

times a week. Scottish van drivers exercise the least. It also emerged football is the sport of choice for 54 per cent of van drivers, but 29 per cent are more likely to be found watching or playing rugby. Almost one in five name golf as their favourite activity, with tennis, snooker and cycling also popular among van drivers. Twelve per cent even said scuba diving was a muchloved hobby. It also revealed that many drivers claim to be more polite, patient and understanding on the road than the old ‘white van man’ stereotype would have you believe. In fact 39 per cent are concerned about the stereotype associated with the white van driver, while 27 per cent went as far as to say they think it’s unfair.

Six in 10 say they are courteous drivers and half claim to be polite and understanding, while 47 per cent have stopped to help road users who have broken down or been involved in an accident.
