2015 Smith Lake Book™
FROM THE EDITOR
Dear Readers As many of you are aware, I’m a Realtor who’s been helping clients at Smith Lake for over 12 years. This publication is the result of countless hours of information accumulation from a huge 3 county area over the course of many years. Most of this information is the same info I’ve been handing out to my clients for years. Four years ago I finally just “bit the bullet and started working on this project. There was a lot to do and knew I had to commit to it to make it the quality publication I knew it could be. This is our third edition and it’s taken a lot to get to this point. The book has gotten bigger and better with each edition and it’s cemented its place in the market. I’d like to thank all of those who believed and trusted in us to create a top-notch publication that any business would be proud to display their ad in. The Smith Lake Book was created to help visitors learn about and explore the area while they’re here enjoying our beautiful waters. In addition, we thrive to help our visitors and lake residents find the products and services they need. Without our advertising members, you wouldn’t be reading this. Quite simply, advertisers make this publication possible. We know that many of our visitors are from other larger areas and may even have relationships with service providers in your home location. We ask that you help us to continue providing you with this publication by supporting our advertisers and thus supporting the Smith Lake economy.

Keep those votes coming and we’ll continue rewarding the winners in each edition. We’ve also added a new i#BJU 5BDLMFw section for anglers to quickly find detailed information of who in the area sells the specific type of bait they’re looking for. While we’re on the subject of fishing, I like to give a shout out and thanks to Mike Walker and David Kilgore for their valuable fishing tips in our new i5JQT GSPN UIF 1SPTw section on pages 12-13. This year we’ve made our VERY popular 4NJUI -BLF NBQ a larger and easier to read fold-out map. We’ve also created four additional local maps for the cities of Double Springs, Addison, Cullman, and Jasper. Please note that we have just begun our creation of these maps, so rest assured that we’ll be refining and improving them in future editions based upon your valuable feedback. We’ve added a new section called i4NJUI -BLF )PU 'PPE %FMJTw. These convenience locations offer quick snacks such as pizza, burgers, fries, and specialty items unique to the area. We felt this section was needed because based upon their offerings, they are more than a convenience store, but not quite a restaurant and they really needed their own classification to be included in the book. As I’ve discovered first hand, some of these delis offer limited, quick snacks, and others have a spread like grandma used to put out! Many are considered favorites by the locals who frequent them daily for specific items. You really need to explore them to discover which will be your choice for a local taste of Smith Lake. Finally, the very popular Smith Lake Business Directory is now in i'MJQ 0WFSw style to make it easier to get to the directory and find what you need.
I would like to thank all of the advertisers and readers of The Smith Lake Book for making the 2015 edition successful. A continued thanks to both the Walker and Cullman Chambers of Commerce for your support, both financially and with distribution. It’s an honor to be a member of both chambers and we look forward to continue doing our part to help promote tourism and business. This year the Smith Lake Book was a corporate sponsor to the Cullman area Tourism Awards as well as for Smith Lake Park’s Bass Fest & Music Festival in October. Thanks for the exposure! Congratulations to our Striper Fishing Trip winners at the Birmingham Boat Show and we hope you enjoyed an exciting day on Smith Lake catching “The Big One! New in 2016 from Smith Lake Marketing LLC - Many of you may have already seen some of our TV’s strategically placed in popular Smith Lake area restaurants and other busy locations around the lake area. Smith Lake Book TV, which is currently in it’s infancy, will soon be displaying much of the same lake area information as the Smith Lake Book does. Starting in 2016, information such as events, things to see & do, fishing and boating tips, etc will be running alongside our sponsors. More locations are sure to be added throughout the year so be sure to look for them!

If you submit the cover shot for the next edition of The Smith Lake Book, we’ll reward you by giving you a plug as well as a professionally framed copy of the edition to hang in your home! If you have an amazing photo taken at Smith Lake, send it to us for consideration at info@smithlakebook.com. If we don’t use it on the cover, we may display it somewhere else in the book. Good luck! LEWIS SMITH LAKE W
hether it’s boating in crystal clear waters, fishing for record-breaking striped bass, or simply enjoying the great outdoors with your family and friends, Smith Lake has it all! Located just 30 minutes northwest of Birmingham, it is gently nestled within the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and lies within the counties of Cullman, Walker and Winston. Smith Lake was created by man, but has clearly been given the blessings of Mother Nature. Outdoor activities abound the area with camping, horseback riding, hiking, OHV riding, rock climbing, bird watching, geocaching, canoe exploring, boating, fishing.... the list goes on and on. An overload of natural beauty awaits. About the lake - The 300-foot high dam, completed in 1961 by the Alabama Power Company, holds back the mighty Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River to form the lake. Smith Lake has a surface area of 21,200 acres, over 500 miles of shoreline, a watershed area of 944 square miles, a retention time of 435 days, and a maximum depth of 264 feet. The Winston County side of Smith Lake’s watershed is adorned by the 180,000-acre Bankhead National Forest which blankets the deeply dissected southern edge of the Cumberland Plateau. The Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River, Alabama’s only “Wild and Scenic” River, flows through the Bankhead National Forest. The Sipsey Wilderness, known as the “Land of a Thousand Waterfalls,” lies within the Bankhead National Forest and is home to Alabama’s largest tree, a tulip poplar with a 21-foot circumference at its base.

any people who visit Smith Lake for the first time are shocked to find all the characteristics of a mountain lake within Alabama’s borders. In addition to the natural beauty and super-clean waters, Smith Lake offers the perfect habitat for striped bass. Over the past 20 years, Smith Lake has become one of the premier striped bass lakes in all of the US. The current Smith Lake striped bass record is 45 pounds and each and every year 35 to 40 pound striped bass are caught. In fact, striped bass weighing 20 to 30 pounds are quite common. Live shad, available locally, are the preferred bait.

Other fish commonly caught are largemouth bass, spotted bass, black crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish. The majority of bass, bream, and crappie fishing is done by casting to the numerous large rocks and fallen trees along the shoreline. The former world record and current state record 8 lb 15 oz spotted bass was caught here on March 18, 1978, by Phillip C. Terry of Decatur. Anglers can fish from the banks on US Forest Service land, the Bankhead National Forest, including the Sipsey Wilderness Area and Corinth, Houston and Clear Creek Recreational Areas.
with rod and reel or artificial bait. In addition to being available at probate offices and many stores that carry fishing tackle or bait, Alabama Hunting and Fishing Licenses (or permits) are available by telephone: 1-888-848-6887 ($3.95 fee), or online at outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/license . Resident and non-resident annual fishing licenses are valid from September 1 through August 31 each year. Residents pay $12 for an annual freshwater license. Non-resident license prices for adjacent states and Louisiana are based upon what those states charge Alabama residents. Other states and foreign visitors may be able to purchase either a $46 freshwater annual, a September 1 August 31, or $26 freshwater seven-day license.

Fishing @ Smith Lake “Fishing for Smith Lake Stripers’’
Guide: Bill Vines
205-647-7683 www.stripefishingheadquarters.com The striped bass is also called Atlantic striped bass, striper, linesider, rock, or rockfish. The striped bass has a streamlined, silvery body marked with longitudinal dark stripes running from behind the gills to the base of the tail. Common mature size can be over 3 1/2 feet. Striped bass are believed to live for up to 30 years. Striped bass will take a number of live and fresh baits, including bloodworms and shad.
Striped Bass
The largemouth is marked by a series of dark blotches forming a jagged horizontal stripe along each flank. It’s large mouth extends beyond the rear margin of the orbit. They are keenly sought after and are noted for the excitement of their fight. Largemouth bass will often become airborne in their effort to throw the hook. Anglers most often use lures such as plastic worms, jigs, crank baits and spinnerbaits.
Largemouth Bass
A spotted bass will resemble a largemouth bass in coloration but will have a smaller mouth. The Alabama spotted is highly prized as a gamefish and average size is much larger than the more common Kentucky spotted bass. The current record spotted bass, caught in Pine Flat Lake, CA, weighed 10.27 lb. Preferring cool and warm mountain streams and reservoirs with rocky bottoms, the spotted bass feeds on insects, crustaceans, frogs, annelid worms, and smaller fish.
Spotted Bass
Black crappies are most accurately identified by the seven or eight spines on its dorsal fin. They are usually silvery-gray to green in color and show black splotches over the entire body. The fish is typically 4–8 inches long. They prefer areas with little or no current, clear water, and abundant cover such as submerged timber or vegetation, as well as sand or mud bottoms. Crappies feed early in the morning and from about midnight until around 2am. Small crappie feed on small fishes like shad and minnows. Adults feed on insects and crustaceans.
Black Crappie
The bluegill has a darkened spot on the posterior edge of the gills and base of the dorsal fin. The sides of its head and chin are a dark shade of blue with a yellowish or bright orange on its breast and abdomen. They range in size from 4 to 12 inches. The largest ever caught was 4 lbs, 12 oz in 1950. Bluegill live in shallow waters in warmer months. They prefer water with many plants, and hide within logs or weeds where they search for food. They eat insect larvae, crayfish, leeches, snails, other small fish, as well as the occasional anglers night crawler.
Bluegill
Channel “cats” are the most fished catfish species in the US. The average size is between 2 and 4 lbs. A channel cat over 20 lbs is considered a spectacular catch. They nest in crevices, hollows, and debris, to protect their eggs from currents. Channel cats possess very keen senses of smell and taste. In fact, they actually have taste buds distributed over the surface of their entire body. These senses allows the fish to find food in dark or muddy water with ease. They can be caught using crickets, night crawlers, minnows, shad, crawfish, and frogs. Catfish have been known to bite on nearly anything of flavor you may have on your hook. smithlakebook.com

Jasper, Alabama’s David Kilgore takes the win on the second stop of the Bassmaster Southern Open at Lewis Smith Lake in 2014. Photos by James Overstreet of BassMaster.
My name is David Kilgore. I was born and raised in Jasper, Alabama, and have been fishing Smith Lake most of my life. I am a Realtor, commercial property manager, and appraiser. My other hobby is a bass fisherman. I have qualified to fish the Bassmaster Elite series three times and have qualified to fish the Bassmaster Classic two times. The second time I qualified for the Classic was by winning stop #2 of the Bassmaster Southern Open in 2014 on, you guessed it, Lewis Smith Lake. Lewis Smith Lake is a very unique lake when comparing it to the other lakes in Alabama. It has very clear water and is extremely deep. These characteristics also make the lake one of the cleanest and most picturesque lakes in the south. With the deep clear water, there are also some challenges of where to catch fish on the lake. I personally do not mind what end of the lake I am on to catch a bass. It is good from top to bottom. The most popular bait on the lake seems to be a shaky-head worm. This is bait that is simple to fish with and is easy for beginners to learn. You simply put a worm on a jig-head and 2015 Smith Lake Book™
drag along the bottom until you feel a bump; then set the hook. If the clear water throws you a loop, then head up to one of the many large creeks or rivers that feed the lake. You might get lucky and find a little stain in the water. This will help you fool a bass a little easier with some type of spinner-bait or crank-bait. Also, in the late spring through the summer and into fall, I consider Smith Lake one of the best top-water lakes in the country. In a nutshell, Smith Lake is as good as it has been in my lifetime. The fishing is off the charts. If you get a chance, you should give it a try.

Tips from the Pros
Fishing @ Smith Lake
STRIPED BASS FISHING ON LEWIS SMITH LAKE The striped bass fishing on Lewis Smith Lake changed dramatically in the past five years with the introduction of the blueback herring and the scales are finally starting to tip. This is not a bad thing because our fish finally have a bait source that can sustain the fishery. Both the striped bass and spotted bass have benefited from this. While some patterns remain, others have changed. Keeping an open mind will help aid in your search. Lewis Smith Lake has some of the state’s biggest striped bass. Now that there’s a better and more plentiful bait source, the lake will have plenty of trophy fish for years to come. When it comes to fishing for stripers on Smith Lake, you need to know a couple of things. First is learning the patterns of the fish. Here’s a quick layout. In the spring, most fish will have moved to the north ends of the lake and can be caught between 1-35 feet. As summer gets here and the water starts heating up, fish will start to move deeper and a good portion of the fish will move south. Fishing depths during this time will range from 30-90 feet. As fall arrives, fish will start to spread out and stripers can be found all over the lake. Top
water action during this time can be awesome. When winter comes, it’s more of the same. Depths will range from 2060 feet during this time. As winter ends, the fish will push hard toward the north ends. Some of the best lures to use are Buck Tail Jigs, Red Fins, Zara Spooks, and Jigging Spoons, but live bait continues to be the best option on putting a trophy striper in your boat. Mike Walker, Owner

The Alabama Bass Trail “Alabama is a great state for fishing,” Governor Robert Bentley said. “We have professional tournaments here on a regular basis. The goal of this amateur tournament is simple. We want to encourage more people to fish where the pros fish. The Alabama Bass Trail was established to help us share our lakes and rivers with more people. When more people come to our lakes and rivers, that increases tourism. And when tourism increases, that benefits our local and state economies.”
A Premium Fishing Experience The state of Alabama has secured its reputation as a worldclass destination for anglers by creating the first-ever premium fishing experience for bass fishermen. The Alabama Bass Trail features 11 of Alabama’s premiere bass-fishing lakes and stretches from the mountains of North Alabama south to the Mobile Delta. With a mild climate, mineral rich reservoirs, affordable lodging and dining, as well as public access to boat ramps and marinas, Alabama is a yearround destination for anglers from across the country.
merges with excellent marinas and boat ramps, great accommodations and a welcoming atmosphere among local businesses. Sanctioned by BASS (Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, the tournament trail contains two divisions: North and South. Each division is made up of five tournaments on five different lakes. Maximum number of boats for each tournament is 225. In 2016, no single entries will be allowed. Teams must fish in all five tournaments in their respective division.
The trail offers you an opportunity to fish where the pro’s fish. Alabama’s waters have been home to hundreds of regional and national tournament competitions drawing all the biggest names in the sport to the state repeatedly. It’s also home to many top touring pros, both those who grew up here and those who moved here to enjoy great bassing resources in all seasons. The lakes represented here are by no means the only outstanding bassing lakes in Alabama, but they represent a great cross-section scattered across the 52,400-square-mile state, where the combination of a top-quality fishing experience 2015 Smith Lake Book™

Below the Dam
FLY FISHING FOR TROUT
The Smith Lake Dam tailrace is the No.1 rated spot in Alabama for fly fishing for rainbow trout. The cold waters below the dam are stocked frequently with rainbow trout and catches of up to 2 pounds are very common. The tailrace record is more than 5 pounds. If you’re fishing in the tailrace area, don’t be surprised if you hook a huge striped bass or hybrid bass once in a while. The striped and hybrid migrate here at different times of the year and give unsuspecting fly fishermen the shock of their lives! The world record 23-pound hybrid bass was caught here. Fly fishing for trout is a very popular sport which can be done using many various methods. The main difference between fly fishing and spin or bait fishing is that in fly fishing the weight of the line carries the hook through the air, whereas in spin and bait fishing the weight of the lure or sinker gives casting distance. Most of the techniques of fly fishing were specifically developed in fishing for trout. It’s a common misconception that all fly fishing is done on the surface of the water with “dry flies.” In many places, success comes from fly fishing using flies called “nymphs”. Nymphs were designed to drift on the bottom of the water. Trout feed below the water’s surface
nearly 90 percent of the time and usually only come to the surface when there is a large bug hatch (when water insects grow wings and leave the water to mate). There are exceptions to this rule, however, particularly during the summer months. Artificial flies are made by fastening hair, fur, feathers, or other materials, both natural and synthetic, onto a hook. Flies are tied in sizes, colors and patterns to match indigenous aquatic insects, baitfish, or other prey that trout love to consume.

Fishing @ Smith Lake
IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASS Coming Soon to Smith Lake! The Bass Fishing Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization dedicated to all anglers, manufacturers, tackle dealers, media and other related companies who further the sport of bass fishing. In February 2013 the board of directors announced the completion of a decade-long, exhaustive quest to secure a permanent home with the selection of Cullman, Alabama as the future site of the Hall, with work to commence immediately. The permanent Hall site will be constructed as a joint project with the City of Cullman, Cullman County and the City of Good Hope – a project that includes an adjacent civic/convention center, all of which will be housed on the 110-acre parcel known as the Burrow property. The Hall will enjoy a dedicated 30 acres of the property, which will include ponds, gardens and an aquatic-education center. The entire project is estimated to cost in excess $17 million with structures that will encompass 101,000 square feet.

SAFE BOATING PRACTICING
You must be licensed to operate a vessel. To get started, you can take your boating course online at www.boat-ed.com/Alabama. When you pass, your Boating Course Certificate of Completion will be sent to you by mail to take to a DPS License Examining office in your area. Take a Boating Class - An informed boater is a safe boater. By learning the boating laws and the rules of the road, you can make better decisions on the water, thereby keeping yourself and your passengers safe. Boating classes are offered around the state of Alabama. If you drive a boat, you must have an operator’s license. Check Out Your Boat - Many people put their boats in the water without first checking belts,
fluids and motors, and end up having to be towed in. Make sure your boat is in good working order before taking it out for the first time. Check Your Safety Equipment - Often boaters take their safety equipment out of the boat for the winter season. Make sure all required equipment is put on the boat and is in good working order. Check Your Life Jackets - Make sure all life jackets

have the right-of-way, if the other boater doesn’t give way to your vessel, you give way. Especially keep an eye out for boaters on Jet Skis, Sea-Doos, etc. Being smaller, they tend to get overlooked by other boaters.
Courtesy on the Water - From the time you start to tow the boat to the launching ramp until the time you take it out at night, courtesy plays a big part in the boating adventure. Remember the golden rule and treat others the way you would want to be treated. Be careful of your wake, both around homes and around other boaters. Don’t tie up the launching ramp while loading equipment on and off your boat.
Expect the Unexpected and Wear a Life Jacket Do it for yourself and your family. Most boating fatalities are the result of capsizing or falls overboard when the victims were not wearing a life jacket. All children under eight years of age must wear a life jacket while on a boat. It’s the law! Everyone on board a vessel must have a life jacket available to them. Make sure they fit properly and are in good condition. Anyone being towed on skis or a tube, riding a Jet Ski or Sea-Doo, or boating within 800 feet below a dam must wear a life jacket.
Keep A Weather Eye Out - Storms can come up quickly, especially in the summertime, so keep an eye to the sky. Watch for temperature changes, shifts in wind patterns, and changes in cloud formations. All these can signal storms moving in. If caught in a storm, try to get to the nearest safe shelter. If you have to ride the storm out on the water, have everyone put on a life jacket and get as close to the centerline as possible, keep the bow of the boat to the wind, and ride the waves at a 45 degree angle.
Don’t Drink and Drive A Boat - Just like on the highway, drinking and operating a boat is against the law. In many ways, it can be even more dangerous. Boaters tend to get a condition called boater’s fatigue, caused by the glare of the sun, action of the waves, and general tiredness towards the end of the day. Adding alcohol to this situation can create a deadly combination.
Drive (Operate) Defensively - Be aware of what other boaters are doing around you. Even if you

BEST of
k e a A L w h t i m S 2015 ards Early this year we sent out emails and Facebook messages to our entire email database requesting that readers vote for their favorite businesses in the Smith Lake areas of Walker, Cullman, and Winston Counties. Since this was our first year of the Best of Smith Lake Awards, we wanted to keep it quick and simple by offering just a few classifications to vote on. In future editions we intend on expanding the voting categories. The rules for the awards are pretty simple and straight forward. We do not require a business to be an advertiser with us to be included in the voting. In fact, we don’t even offer a list of businesses to choose from. We ask that voters simply fill in the blank and vote for as many or as few categories as they wish. We encourage every voter to complete the entire ballot though. Voting is open to adults 18 & over with only one ballot allowed per person. You must have an active email address to vote and only two people are allowed to use the same email address. To vote, you are required to provide us with your name, address, and email address. Your information is safe and we do not share it.
Voting is open from January 1 through February 20 at www.SmithLakeBook.com 2015 Smith Lake Book™

The Bankhead National Forest
The Sipsey Wilderness Area 2
1
The William B. Bankhead National Forest is Alabama’s largest National Forest with 181,230 acres and is home of Alabama’s only National Wild and Scenic River, the Sipsey Fork. It is located in northwestern Alabama, around the town of Double Springs; it is named in honor of William B. Bankhead, a longtime U.S. Representative from Alabama. Known as the “land of a thousand waterfalls,” this vast monument to nature and man is popular for hiking, horseback riding, hunting, boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing and more. Within the forest lies the Sipsey Wilderness, with a host of wildlife and an abundance of swift streams, limestone bluffs, and waterfalls. Native American relics abound in Bankhead, one of the Southern United State’s premier sites for petroglyphs, prehistoric drawings, and rock carvings at sites such as the Kinlock Shelter. The forest is headquartered in Montgomery, as are all four National Forests in Alabama (Conecuh, Talladega, Tuskegee, and William B. Bankhead). There are local ranger district offices located in Double Springs. The forest was established as Alabama National Forest on January 15, 1918, with 66,008 acres. On June 19, 1936, it was renamed Black Warrior National Forest, which in turn was renamed William B. Bankhead National Forest on June 17, 1942. The Sipsey Wilderness is a place for those who want to get away from modern conveniences without the sound of traffic, telephones, and TV’s and instead listen to the songs of the warblers, the hammering beaks of woodpeckers, the hoot of the great horned owl, the howl of the lone coyote, and the sound of water running over rocks and boulders in the many streams flowing through this portion of the Warrior Mountains. The Sipsey Wilderness lies within the Bankhead National Forest around the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River in northwestern Alabama. It is the third largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi River. Designated in 1975 and expanded in 1988, the 24,922 acre Sipsey is the largest and most frequently visited Wilderness area in Alabama and contains dozens of waterfalls. The wilderness consists of the low plateau of Brindley Mountain which is dissected into a rough landscape by several creeks and rivers. Due to the layers of limestone and sandstone that make up the area, waterfalls are very common in the wilderness. This feature has earned the wilderness the nickname “Land of 1000 Waterfalls.” Sightseeing, hiking, canoeing, backpacking, and horseback riding are only a few of the many outdoor recreational activities to be enjoyed by visitors. The US Forest Service has designated and established trails for hiking, horseback riding, and horse or mule drawn wagons. These trails and roads provide access to secluded sandstone cliffs, wonderful waterfalls, fantastic fall foliage, beautiful wildflowers, and tremendous trees. To Advertise (205) 265-1121

Hiking the Sipsey Wilderness 22 Wild-flowing creeks in northwestern Alabama converge to become the Sipsey River, 61 miles of which has been designated “Wild and Scenic.” Running below sandstone bluffs that rise 30 to 100 feet above the water, through a forest of often imposing second-growth trees and occasional small stands of virgin timber, the Sipsey and its tributaries slice through the Wilderness. Sinkholes, small caves, and scenic overlooks are plentiful. Less plentiful is the rare, flattened musk turtle, an inhabitant of the Sipsey. Six established trails, all rated easy to moderate, crisscross the area. Several depart from the Sipsey River Recreation Site on the southern boundary, which has sanitary facilities, drinkable water, no developed campsites, and no fee. Sipsey trails receive moderate to heavy human use year round. Wilderness camping, building campfires, hunting, and fishing are permitted and horsepackers are allowed on designated trails.
Bankhead Forest - ATV Trails 1 ATV trails are available throughout the William B. Bankhead National Forest, the entrance of which is located about 40 miles from Wilburn. The ATV trail at the forest, called the Flint Creek Multiple-Use Trail, allows state-licensed off-road vehicles, such as ATVs. Unlicensed ATVs are allowed on trails if they are 50 inches wide or slimmer. Because this is a multiple-use trail, riders are encouraged to exercise caution when riding, especially when cresting hills or rounding curves. Bankhead Ranger District 205-489-5111
Birdwatching Birdwatching in Winston and Cullman Counties has grown in interest in recent years. In Winston County, the 25,000-acre Sipsey Wilderness in the Bankhead National Forest is the second largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi. About 150 species have been documented in the vicinity, including the sharp-shinned hawk, American redstart, and black-throated green, cerulean, and black-and-white warblers. Kinlock Falls and Thompson Creek Bridge yield a spectacular landscape of cliffs, gorges, and hardwoods, with excellent birding smithlakebook.com
opportunities. In Cullman County, dense woodlands and rich waters contribute to a natural diversity of birds and other wildlife. This year, the area became home to the North Alabama Birding Trail, one of America’s newest bird watching trails. The trail features 50 designated stations, many with a developed kiosk, that allows visitors to observe a rich diversity of feathered friends.

Civil War Museum & Park

For the past 25 years, a gentleman by the name of Fred Wise has steadily worked on turning 40 acres of land “good for nothing but holding the earth together” into a Civil War historic legacy. Crooked Creek Civil War Museum & Park is located on a battle site where Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Union Colonel Abel Streight fought for several hours. They then went on to engage in the Battles of Hog Mountain and Day’s Gap in April 1863. Historic markers are placed along rural highways throughout Cullman County indicating the Forrest-Streight Route. One such marker near West Point leads the county road to Crooked Creek where the Civil War Museum and Park are located. A small fee is charged for a tour of the grounds and museum. Cullman County Museum
Evelyn Burrow Museum The Burrow Museum houses one of the finest collections of its kind, valued at $9.5 million, in the world today and is donated by Evelyn Burrow of Cullman. It is an annex of Wallace State Community College in Hanceville and eventually will be located in a new Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts on campus. More than 5,000 pieces from around the world were acquired over a 65 year period by Burrow and her late husband, Ottis. Objects in the museum date as far back as the 1600s. Other pieces are so rare, they are priceless. The Museum boasts one of the largest known collections of horse sculptures in existence (inspired by the Burrows’ Tennessee Walker, Ebony’s Leading Lady - a 1965 World Champion). The campus of the Museum offers items of interest, also. Observing from the deck of the sprawling front porch, the towering statue of Cullman’s founding father, the town gazebo, historic plaques from former city buildings, a restored depot, and one of the many city parks are all sights to absorb. Carl Elliott House Museum 26 The Carl Elliott House Museum is a historic house museum detailing the life of Congressman Carl A. Elliott, Sr. and the times in which he lived. The modest home in downtown Jasper demonstrates that a man from an ordinary background can accomplish extraordinary things. Carl Elliott lived through some of the most tumultuous times in Alabama and in American history. He introduced legislation which would change the face of education in America and fought for racial tolerance and a better quality of life for the people of Alabama. He also served as a trusted advisor to President John F. Kennedy. Despite political exile and financial ruin, Elliott continued to stand for the values he believed in, earning him international acclaim in later life.
Cullman Historic Districts 9 The City of Cullman has three historic districts, two of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Washington, DC. The historic district of “Die Deutsche Kolonie Von Nord Alabama” (The German Colony of North Alabama) lies south of 278E and consists of 27 blocks that contain 135 buildings dating from the mid-1870’s. Various types of architecture are represented including Queen Anne, Eastlake, High Victorian Italianate, Italianate Romanesque Revival, Georgia Revival, Colonial Revival, and Classical Revival, to name a few. The area, marked with National Historic District street signs, lies east of the sunken Louisville and Nashville Railway tracks and southeast of the Downtown Historic Business District, which is also listed on the National Register. The Cullman Historic Business District covers First and Second Av, NE and SE, and consists of 58 structures. St. Johns Church, the first in the city, is a beautiful representative of the many historic churches in the town. Cullman, AL 35055. web: www.co.cullman.al.us 2015 Smith Lake Book™

Clarkson Covered Bridge
18
Clarkson Covered Bridge, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is one of Cullman County’s most well known attractions and is also one of the area’s most historically rich sites. Built in 1904, the 270-foot lattice-truss bridge is now one of only 14 covered bridges remaining in Alabama. Once used regularly by farmers and travelers to cross Crooked Creek, the weather worn bridge is now closed to traffic, but has become the centerpiece of a park built in periodfashion which showcases its historical significance. With the help of concerned citizens working on a project commemorating America’s Bicentennial, the Cullman County Commission restored the site and embellished the grounds with hiking trails, a picnic area, a dogtrot log cabin, and working grist mill. The park is host to numerous weddings, car shows, and other activities. Take I-65 Exit 308, west on U.S. Hwy. 278 for 9 miles. Follow signs to park just off Hwy. 278
Visitors to The Bankhead House and Heritage Center can see history unfold around them as they follow the 111 years total service in the U.S. Congress by men from Jasper, Alabama. The Bankhead House and Heritage Center is a 1920’s home in north Jasper that was built by William B. Bankhead and was recently restored from the original blueprints. The center, which is owned by the Walker Area Community Foundation (WACF), is dedicated to the art, history, and people of Walker County in honor of the late Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives who served as speaker for over four years until his death in 1940. Visitors are welcome from 10 am - 4 pm Monday Friday. Musgrove Country Club
13
A beautiful blend of log-sturdy, pioneer spaciousness with modern brick, block, and tile makes the club house of Musgrove Country Club one of the most unique in the nation. Col. L. B. Musgrove completed the original log building in 1924 as a place to entertain his business associates and friends from Wall Street and other parts of the nation. All 556 logs in the original building were cut from the 228 acres of “forest primeval” club property where they were hauled to the site, creosoted, and chain-hoisted into place at a rate of three to four logs per day. A 9-hole golf course was also part of the original property, but nine more holes were added in 1960. In 1992, architect Jerry Pate designed improvements to the course, making it one of the best in the state. Bent-grass greens and lush 410 Bermuda fairways complement the design. The pro shop and clubhouse are connected to the golf course by two wooden, swinging bridges that cross Blackwater Creek near the dam originally built to furnish electricity to the Club. Musgrove Country Club, once the playground of the very rich, is today the recreational spot of some 525 resident and non-resident members. 205-221-7900 916 Country Club Road, Jasper, AL 35503 www.SmithLakeBook.com
