From the Editor
Editor From The
Dear Readers We chose an American flag for the cover this year in lieu of the upcoming presidential election. We would like to encourage all registered voters to exercise their right to vote and choose who you feel would be the best person to lead this great nation.
It’s an Election Year! Vote on November 8! New This Year: • • • • • •
•
Shopping Section - We have been asked to add this section for a couple of years now. We intend on largely expanding it in the upcoming issues to include many more shopping opportunities. RV Campgrounds - RV’s have become very popular on the lake over the past few years and understandably so - it’s a great vacation! We hope to “steer” our readers in the right direction! Restaurants - We’ve changed the name of this to the catchy: “Restaurant Flavorites”. If this isn’t already trademarked, we may do it! ;) Hot Food Delis - We’ve changed the name of this section to “Quick Stop Snacks & Delis”. Why? We think it sounds more descriptive. We’ve also appropriately placed it between the Restaurant Flavorites and the Grocery & Supply Stores (since it’s a little bit of both). The BEST of Smith Lake - We have decided to expand the voting time for more people to have the chance to vote for their favorites. Votes will still be cast on-line as it’s the simplest and most accurate way for us to keep things straight. We ask that everyone please follow the rules and play fair. Color Coding Enhancements - Did you know that since the first edition in 2011, every issue of The Smith Lake Book has been color coded? Well, if this is your first year to catch on, it’s a good year to start because we’ve improved the color coding quite a bit. Each section listed on the right will stay that color in all future issues. The color coding is to help you find a section quickly while thumbing through as well as to help you find a particular business on the maps in the front of the book. For example: red numbers correspond to Restaurant Flavorites on the map, green numbers are for Accommodations, etc. Facebook Groups - Did you know that The Smith Lake Book has the most popular Smith Lake Groups on Facebook? It’s true! We have over 3,000 members in our Smith Lake Discussion Group, and almost 4,000 members in our Smith Lake Classifieds Group! Anyone can join. We just ask everyone to follow the rules.
I would like to thank all of the advertisers and contributors for making this edition a reality. A continued thanks to both the Walker and Cullman Chambers of Commerce for your support, both financially and with distribution. It’s an honor to be a member of both chambers and we look forward to continue doing our part to help promote tourism and business. This is the second year the Smith Lake Book has been a corporate sponsor to the Cullman area Tourism Awards. Thanks for the opportunity and congratulations to the winners! - Enjoy the book, Brian Czup, Editor The Smith Lake Book ™ is published annually and is available around the immediate Smith Lake areas of Walker, Winston, & Cullman Counties.

About the lake - The 300-foot high dam, completed in 1961 by the Alabama Power Company, holds back the mighty Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River to form the lake. Smith Lake has a surface area of 21,200 acres, over 500 miles of shoreline, a watershed area of 944 square miles, a retention time of 435 days, and a maximum depth of 264 feet. The Winston County side of Smith Lake’s watershed is adorned by the 180,000-acre Bankhead National Forest which blankets the deeply dissected southern edge of the Cumberland Plateau. The Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River, Alabama’s only “Wild and Scenic” River, flows through the Bankhead National Forest. The Sipsey Wilderness, known as the “Land of a Thousand Waterfalls,” lies within the Bankhead National Forest and is home to Alabama’s largest tree, a tulip poplar with a 21-foot circumference at its base.

With five past world record spotted bass catches, you can see why the lure of big spots brings anglers from all over the country to Lewis Smith Lake. Plus, the Gulf Coast strain of striped bass here often weighs in at more than 20 pounds. In fact, a monster 45lb. striped bass caught on the lake is an Alabama record and many anglers feel there are 50+ pound stripes just waiting to strike.

any people who visit Smith Lake for the first time are shocked to find all the characteristics of a mountain lake within Alabama’s borders. In addition to the natural beauty and super-clean waters, Smith Lake offers the perfect habitat for striped bass. Over the past 20 years, Smith Lake has become one of the premier striped bass lakes in all of the US. The current Smith Lake striped bass record is 45 pounds and each and every year 35 to 40 pound striped bass are caught. In fact, striped bass weighing 20 to 30 pounds are quite common. Live shad, available locally, are the preferred bait.
Other fish commonly caught are largemouth bass, spotted bass, black crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish. The majority of bass, bream, and crappie fishing is done by casting to the numerous large rocks and fallen trees along the shoreline. The former world record and current state record 8 lb 15 oz spotted bass was caught here on March 18, 1978, by Phillip C. Terry of Decatur. Anglers can fish from the banks on US Forest Service land, the Bankhead National Forest, including the Sipsey Wilderness Area and Corinth, Houston and Clear Creek Recreational Areas. Fishing licenses are required for residents age 16 years through age 64 who fish with rod and reel or artificial bait. In addition to being available at probate offices and many stores that carry fishing tackle or bait, Alabama Hunting and Fishing Licenses (or permits) are available by telephone: 1-888-848-6887 ($3.95 fee), or online at outdooralabama.com/ freshwater-fishing-license . Resident and non-resident annual fishing licenses are valid from Sept 1 through Aug 31 each year. Residents pay $13.10 for an annual freshwater license. Non-resident license prices vary. More information can be found at: outdooralabama.com/freshwater-fishing-license.
Striped Bass The striped bass is also called Atlantic striped bass, striper, linesider, rock, or rockfish. The striped bass has a streamlined, silvery body marked with longitudinal dark stripes running from behind the gills to the base of the tail. Common mature size can be over 3 1/2 feet. Striped bass are believed to live for up to 30 years. Striped bass will take a number of live and fresh baits, including bloodworms and shad. 2016 Smith Lake Book™

Fishing for Striped Bass by Mike Walker - Fishing Guide The striped bass fishing on Lewis Smith Lake changed dramatically in the past five years with the introduction of the blueback herring and the scales are finally starting to tip. This is not a bad thing because our fish finally have a bait source that can sustain the fishery. Both the striped bass and spotted bass have benefited from this. While some patterns remain, others have changed. Keeping an open mind will help aid in your search. Lewis Smith Lake has some of the state’s biggest striped bass. Now that there’s a better and more plentiful bait source, the lake will have plenty of trophy fish for years to come.

Fishing @ Smith Lake
When it comes to fishing for stripers on Smith Lake, you need to know a couple of things. First is learning the patterns of the fish. Here’s a quick layout. In the spring, most fish will have moved to the north ends of the lake and can be caught between 1-35 feet. As summer gets here and the water starts heating up, fish will start to move deeper and a good portion of the fish will move south. Fishing depths during this time will range from 30-90 feet. As fall arrives, fish will start to spread out and stripers can be found all over the lake. Top water action during this time can be awesome. When winter comes, it’s more of the same. Depths will range from 20-60 feet during this time. As winter ends, the fish will push hard toward the north ends. Some of the best lures to use are Buck Tail Jigs, Red Fins, Zara Spooks, and Jigging Spoons, but live bait continues to be the best option on putting a trophy striper in your boat.

Largemouth Bass The largemouth is marked by a series of dark blotches forming a jagged horizontal stripe along each flank. It’s large mouth extends beyond the rear margin of the orbit. They are keenly sought after and are noted for the excitement of their fight. Largemouth bass will often become airborne in their effort to throw the hook. Anglers most often use lures such as plastic worms, jigs, crank baits and spinnerbaits.
Spotted Bass A spotted bass will resemble a largemouth bass in coloration but will have a smaller mouth. The Alabama spotted is highly prized as a gamefish and average size is much larger than the more common Kentucky spotted bass. The current record spotted bass, caught in Pine Flat Lake, CA, weighed 10.27 lb. Preferring cool and warm mountain streams and reservoirs with rocky bottoms, the spotted bass feeds on insects, crustaceans, frogs, annelid worms, and smaller fish.
Black Crappie Black crappies are most accurately identified by the seven or eight spines on its dorsal fin. They are usually silvery-gray to green in color and show black splotches over the entire body. The fish is typically 4–8 inches long. They prefer areas with little or no current, clear water, and abundant cover such as submerged timber or vegetation, as well as sand or mud bottoms. Crappies feed early in the morning and from about midnight until around 2am. Small crappie feed on small fishes like shad and minnows. Adults feed on insects and crustaceans.

Bass Fishing on Smith Lake by David Kilgore Lewis Smith Lake is a very unique lake when comparing it to the other lakes in Alabama. It has very clear water and is extremely deep. These characteristics also make the lake one of the cleanest and most picturesque lakes in the south. With the deep clear water, there are also some challenges of where to catch fish on the lake. I personally do not mind what end of the lake I am on to catch a bass. It is good from top to bottom. The most popular bait on the lake seems to be a shaky-head worm. This is bait that is simple to fish with and is easy for beginners to learn. You simply put a worm on a jig-head and drag along the bottom until you feel a bump; then set the hook. If the clear water throws you a loop, then head up
to one of the many large creeks or rivers that feed the lake. You might get lucky and find a little stain in the water. This will help you fool a bass a little easier with some type of spinner-bait or crank-bait. Also, in the late spring through the summer and into fall, I consider Smith Lake one of the best top-water lakes in the country. In a nutshell, Smith Lake is as good as it has been in my lifetime. The fishing is off the charts. If you get a chance, you should give it a try. David Kilgore Bassmaster Southern Open 2014 Winner at Smith Lake
Bluegill The bluegill has a darkened spot on the posterior edge of the gills and base of the dorsal fin. The sides of its head and chin are a dark shade of blue with a yellowish or bright orange on its breast and abdomen. They range in size from 4 to 12 inches. The largest ever caught was 4 lbs, 12 oz in 1950. Bluegill live in shallow waters in warmer months. They prefer water with many plants, and hide within logs or weeds where they search for food. They eat insect larvae, crayfish, leeches, snails, other small fish, as well as the occasional anglers night crawler.
Channel Catfish

Fishing @ Smith Lake
Channel “cats” are the most fished catfish species in the US. The average size is between 2 and 4 lbs. A channel cat over 20 lbs is considered a spectacular catch. They nest in crevices, hollows, and debris, to protect their eggs from currents. Channel cats possess very keen senses of smell and taste. In fact, they actually have taste buds distributed over the surface of their entire body. These senses allows the fish to find food in dark or muddy water with ease. They can be caught using crickets, night crawlers, minnows, shad, crawfish, and frogs. Catfish have been known to bite on nearly anything of flavor you may have on your hook.

Trout Fishing Below the Dam
The Smith Lake Dam tailrace is the No.1 rated spot in Alabama for fly fishing for rainbow trout. The cold waters below the dam are stocked frequently with rainbow trout and catches of up to 2 pounds are very common. The tailrace record is more than 5 pounds. If you’re fishing in the tailrace area, don’t be surprised if you hook a huge striped bass or hybrid bass once in a while. The striped and hybrid migrate here at different times of the year and give unsuspecting fly fishermen the shock of their lives! The world record 23-pound hybrid bass was caught here. Fly fishing for trout is a very popular sport which can be done using many various methods. The main difference between fly fishing and spin or bait fishing is that in fly fishing the weight of the line carries the hook through the air, whereas in spin and bait fishing the weight of the lure or sinker gives casting distance. Most of the techniques of fly fishing were specifically developed in fishing for trout. It’s a common misconception that all fly fishing is done on the surface of the water with “dry flies.” In many places, success comes from fly fishing using flies called “nymphs”. Nymphs were designed to drift on the bottom of the water. Trout feed below the water’s surface nearly 90 percent of the time and usually only come to the surface when there is a

large bug hatch (when water insects grow wings and leave the water to mate). There are exceptions to this rule, however, particularly during the summer months. Artificial flies are made by fastening hair, fur, feathers, or other materials, both natural and synthetic, onto a hook. Flies are tied in sizes, colors and patterns to match indigenous aquatic insects, baitfish, or other prey that trout love to consume.

Take a Boating Class - An informed boater is a safe boater. By learning the boating laws and the rules of the road, you can make better decisions on the water, thereby keeping yourself and your passengers safe. Boating classes are offered around the state of Alabama. If you drive a boat, you must have an operator’s license. Check Out Your Boat - Many people put their boats in the water without first checking belts, fluids and motors, and end up having to be towed in. Make sure your boat is in good working order before taking it out for the first time. Check Your Safety Equipment - Often boaters take their safety equipment out of the boat for the winter season. Make sure all required equipment is put on the boat and is in good working order. Check Your Life Jackets - Make sure all life jackets are in good working order. All straps, buckles and zippers need to be operational, and the life jackets cannot have any rips or tears.
Drive (Operate) Defensively - Be aware of what other boaters are doing around you. Even if you have the right-of-way, if the other boater doesn’t give way to your vessel, you give way. Especially keep an eye out for boaters on Jet Skis, Sea-Doos, etc. Being smaller, they tend to get overlooked by other boaters. Expect the Unexpected and Wear a Life Jacket Do it for yourself and your family. Most boating fatalities are the result of capsizing or falls overboard when the victims were not wearing a life jacket. All children under eight years of age must wear a life jacket while on a boat. It’s the law! Everyone on board a vessel must have a life jacket available to them. Make sure they fit properly and are in good condition. Anyone being towed on skis or a tube, riding a Jet Ski or Sea-Doo, or boating within 800 feet below a dam must wear a life jacket. Don’t Drink and Drive A Boat - Just like on the highway, drinking and operating a boat is against the law. In many ways, it can be even more dangerous. Boaters tend to get a condition called boater’s fatigue, caused by the glare of the sun, action of the waves, and general tiredness towards the end of the day. Adding alcohol to this situation can create a deadly combination.
Keep A Weather Eye Out - Storms can come up quickly, especially in the summertime, so keep an eye to the sky. Watch for temperature changes, shifts in wind patterns, and changes in cloud formations. All these can signal storms moving in. If caught in a storm, try to get to the nearest safe shelter. If you have to ride the storm out on the water, have everyone put on a life jacket and smithlakebook.com

Courtesy on the Water - From the time you start to tow the boat to the launching ramp until the time you take it out at night, courtesy plays a big part in the boating adventure. Remember the golden rule and treat others the way you would want to be treated. Be careful of your wake, both around homes and around other boaters. Don’t tie up the launching ramp while loading equipment on and off your boat.

The Bankhead National Forest
1
The William B. Bankhead National Forest is Alabama’s largest National Forest with 181,230 acres and is home of Alabama’s only National Wild and Scenic River, the Sipsey Fork. It is located in northwestern Alabama, around the town of Double Springs; it is named in honor of William B. Bankhead, a longtime U.S. Representative from Alabama. Known as the “land of a thousand waterfalls,” this vast monument to nature and man is popular for hiking, horseback riding, hunting, boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing and more. Within the forest lies the Sipsey 2016 Smith Lake Book™
Wilderness, with a host of wildlife and an abundance of swift streams, limestone bluffs, and waterfalls. Native American relics abound in Bankhead, one of the Southern United State’s premier sites for petroglyphs, prehistoric drawings, and rock carvings at sites such as the Kinlock Shelter. The forest is headquartered in Montgomery, as are all four National Forests in Alabama (Conecuh, Talladega, Tuskegee, and William B. Bankhead). There are local ranger district offices located in Double Springs. The forest was established as Alabama National Forest on January 15, 1918, with 66,008 acres. On June 19, 1936, it was renamed Black Warrior

The Sipsey Wilderness Area 2 The Sipsey Wilderness is a place for those who want to get away from modern conveniences without the sound of traffic, telephones, and TV’s and instead listen to the songs of the warblers, the hammering beaks of woodpeckers, the hoot of the great horned owl, the howl of the lone coyote, and the sound of water running over rocks and boulders in the many streams flowing through this portion of the Warrior Mountains. The Sipsey Wilderness lies within the Bankhead National Forest around the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River in northwestern Alabama. It is the third largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi River. Designated in 1975 and expanded in 1988, the 24,922 acre Sipsey is the largest and most frequently visited Wilderness area in Alabama and contains dozens of waterfalls. The wilderness consists of the low plateau of Brindley Mountain which is dissected into a rough landscape by several creeks and rivers. Due to the layers of limestone and sandstone that make up the area, waterfalls are very common in the wilderness. This feature has earned the wilderness the nickname “Land of 1000 Waterfalls.” Sightseeing, hiking, canoeing, backpacking, and horseback riding are only a few of the many outdoor recreational activities to be enjoyed by visitors. The US Forest Service has designated and established trails for hiking, horseback riding, and horse or mule drawn wagons. These trails and roads provide access to secluded sandstone cliffs, wonderful waterfalls, fantastic fall foliage, beautiful wildflowers, and tremendous trees.

Bankhead Forest - ATV Trails 1 ATV trails are available throughout the William B. Bankhead National Forest, the entrance of which is located about 40 miles from Wilburn. The ATV trail at the forest, called the Flint Creek Multiple-Use Trail, allows state-licensed off-road vehicles, such as ATVs. Unlicensed ATVs are allowed on trails if they are 50 inches wide or slimmer. Because this is a multiple-use trail, riders are encouraged to exercise caution when riding, especially when cresting hills or rounding curves. Bankhead Ranger District 205-489-5111
Birdwatching Birdwatching in Winston and Cullman Counties has grown in interest in recent years. In Winston County, the 25,000-acre Sipsey Wilderness in the Bankhead National Forest is the second largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi. About 150 species have been documented in the vicinity, including the sharp-shinned hawk, American redstart, and black-throated green, cerulean, and black-and-white warblers. Kinlock Falls and Thompson Creek Bridge yield a spectacular landscape of cliffs, gorges, and hardwoods, with excellent birding opportunities. In Cullman County, dense woodlands and rich waters contribute to a natural diversity of birds and other wildlife. This year, the area became home to the North Alabama Birding Trail, one of America’s newest bird watching trails. The trail features 50 designated stations, many with a developed kiosk, that allows visitors to observe a rich diversity of feathered friends.

Things to See & Do
Wild-flowing creeks in northwestern Alabama converge to become the Sipsey River, 61 miles of which has been designated “Wild and Scenic.” Running below sandstone bluffs that rise 30 to 100 feet above the water, through a forest of often imposing second-growth trees and occasional small stands of virgin timber, the Sipsey and its tributaries slice through the Wilderness. Sinkholes, small caves, and scenic overlooks are plentiful. Less plentiful is the rare, flattened musk turtle, an inhabitant of the Sipsey. Six established trails, all rated easy to moderate, crisscross the area. Several depart from the
Sipsey River Recreation Site on the southern boundary, which has sanitary facilities, drinkable water, no developed campsites, and no fee. Sipsey trails receive moderate to heavy human use year round. Wilderness camping, building campfires, hunting, and fishing are permitted and horsepackers are allowed on designated trails.

The Grotto is known throughout the world as “Jerusalem in Miniature.” It is a beautifully landscaped, four-acre park designed to provide a natural setting for the 125 miniature reproductions of some of the most famous historic buildings and shrines of the world. The masterpieces of stone and concrete are the lifetime work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey. Begun as a hobby, he used various materials he could find. With infinite patience and a remarkable sense of symmetry and proportion, Brother Joseph recreated some of the greatest edifices of all time. Open daily 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Small admission fee. 10
Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, located at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama, is an amazing and awe-inspiring place to visit. Built by Mother Angelica, it is the home of the Poor Clare nuns of the Perpetual Adoration. It is modeled after European 13th century monasteries with both Spanish and Italian influences. The monastery features stained glass windows from Germany, building stone from Canada, marble pillars and inlaid marble designs from Italy, roofing tiles from Columbia, South America, and carved stonework decorations from artisans in Spain. The main altar area is made of carved cedar covered in gold leaf. The Monastery Chapel and grounds are open to the public from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Masses are held daily at 7 a.m. with confessions heard immediately following the mass. Free Admission - Groups Welcome.
