Family, work, love, gardening, volunteerism and countless other things have changed the way I see life over the past decade. The difference isn’t necessarily physical but rather comes from shifting values and priorities. My eyes haven’t changed (much); my perspective has.

But there’s value in physical change, too. There are reasons that we climb mountains, swim underwater and drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway or one of many beautiful two-lane roads that encompass the lake. Going from childhood into adolescence and then to adulthood, people become taller or stronger or faster — or just the opposite. Regardless, there are differences at each step.

Asking you to feel like a kid again, as the story starting on page 70 does, means getting caught up in some of the most exciting moments of youth and again embracing some of the joys that may not be common to your current lifestyle. Likewise, there’s no doubting how different your surroundings can be when viewed from hundreds of feet in the air. The shapes of the mountains and the clarity of the water, shown on pages 78 to 84, feel wholly unique from above. And the story on page 88 that reaches to the far edge of the lake takes you on a journey outside your normal haunts and shows you how interesting all corners of the lake can be.

Cardiac care close to home Centra helped me get back to caring for my community. As a firefighter, it’s my duty to save people from danger. Serving my hometown of Lynchburg means so much to me. It’s what I was called to do. – Brian Younger, Lynchburg firefighter An irregular heartbeat forced firefighter Brian Younger to the sidelines. Centra cardiologist Richard Kuk, MD, diagnosed Younger with symptomatic premature ventricular contractions, which caused his heart to produce an extra beat. Dr. Kuk performed an ablation procedure to correct the irregular heartbeat. Czech Republic Tom and Barbara Fansler of Scruggs traveled with the July/August 2012 issue of Laker Magazine to Prague, Czech Republic. While there, Wenceslas Square was one of their stops.

Ireland Jim and Janet Collins took Laker Magazine with them to Ireland and Northern Ireland in April. A visit to Blarney Castle and the Stone of Eloquence was on the itinerary, but their visit to Belfast was particularly enlightening.

Cuba Jan Spencer of Hardy went to Guantanamo Naval Station in Cuba in March. Her family was stationed there in 1966 to 1968, and she graduated from W.T. Sampson School there in 1968. “The base has changed a lot over the years, but it was fun to visit again!” she said.

Croatia Sue Partsch of Goodview had the opportunity to visit Dubrovnik, Croatia, in March with her friend, Shelley Cook, of Houston. They spent seven days in the country touring Old Town Dubrovnik, visiting vineyards and sampling local cuisine. Bhutan In February, Carol and Gil Miekina brought the January/ February issue of Laker Magazine with them as they climbed to the Tiger’s Nest, a mountainside Buddhist monastery in Bhutan that was built in 1692. The hike to get to and from the viewing point took five hours, and the trail elevation went from 7,500 to 10,000 feet. “Bhutan was a spectacular place, the setting of the ‘happiest people on earth,’ ” they said. The Miekinas visited Dubai, Bhutan and India, learning about the cultures and seeing historical sites, including the Taj Mahal.

Belgium and the Netherlands Bill and Robin Goold of Moneta traveled to Belgium and the Netherlands on a small-ship cruise on Dutch waterways in late March and early April. Their daughter, Debbie Barr, and granddaughter, Jenna, accompanied them. In spite of the cold winter, there were some spring flowers blooming. In Amsterdam, at the Keukenhof gardens, all of the flowers in the conservatory were beautifully in bloom.

Germany Ron and Sally Roseveare enjoyed cruising the Rhine River in early May, which included a stop at the 700-year-old Marksburg Castle at Braubach, Germany. “Situated in the middle of the Rhine River on a rocky island, this fortress was the only undamaged hilltop castle in the Middle Rhine Valley,” they said.

Carolyn Koontz, Donna Broomall, Larry Broomall and Dick Ungerer.

Good deeds in Guatemala Four members of Bethlehem United Methodist Church left the comforts of the Smith Mountain Lake area in early March and spent a week helping the impoverished in Guatemala. The mission trip was the fifth time Carolyn Koontz has gone to Centro Educativo Mi Refugio in San Pedro Sacatepequez, a few hours outside of Guatemala City. She began going while living in Maryland and continued after moving to the lake three years ago. After her and her husband spoke about their experiences and found a supportive audience within their church, Bethlehem members wanted in. Koontz was joined by Donna Broomall, Larry Broomall and Dick Ungerer. They brought supplies — which included school supplies, toothbrushes, eyeglasses from the Lions Club, fabric and sewing goods, gently used clothing, children’s vitamins and prenatal vitamins — that were donated to the nondenominational Christian school. While in Guatemala, the four taught enrichment sewing classes and woodworking and worked on a construction project. The overall mission team totaled about 30 people who came from Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and a handful of other places.

Send US YoUr Photo!

Those in Guatemala “love for us to come,” Koontz said. “They thank us for coming.” Youngsters at the school got to do arts and crafts projects with those on the trip, while mothers were provided with access to sewing machines and training. “These days with us are very precious to them, and they are so much fun to work with,” Koontz said. “We laugh, cry and pray together while letting them make some things to take home.” When the school opened nearly three decades ago, it had just 25 students. Today, there are more than 200 children who attend. And those who visit are heartened by the opportunity to enrich the lives of the San Pedro Sacatepequez community. “I leave a piece of my heart every time I leave, she said. “It’s very hard to know these people, who are so loving and so appreciative of everything, have so little.” — Ryan Tipps, Editor For more on the school, visit www.mirefugio.org.

lthough Jim and Barbara Grant bought their lot in The Boardwalk in January 1995, it was only after he retired from Alstom Power Co. that they built their home, which was completed in February 2013. The Grants had moved several times during their working years, and while they were living in Richmond, a friend suggested they check out Smith Mountain Lake. “It was love at first sight,” Barbara said. “We vacationed here and eventually bought a condo at Fairway Bay in The Waterfront.” Her husband added: “When The Boardwalk was being developed, we purchased this lot primarily because we had confidence in the developer, Ron Willard, who had a good reputation and would do things right. The lot would at least be an investment. At that time we had our pick of most any lot. We chose this one because it was on a point, had a wide view and had a lot of lake frontage [325 feet], suitable

In addition to the openness, a visitor is struck by the Grants’ beautiful Asian artifacts and furniture. While living in Taipei, Taiwan, for four years, the couple visited several Asian countries: Japan, mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea. The dining room is furnished with a lovely rosewood dining suite that Barbara said “was made especially for us.” Completing the room’s decor are an unusual burled wood buffet and a large, painted Chinese screen. In the adjoining great room, a silk screen from China graces the area over the fireplace. To each side, there are built-in shelves with small treasures: hand-painted Indonesian eggs and baby Chinese monk carvings.

At top: High ceilings and plentiful windows give the home of Jim and Barbara Grant an inviting openness. From almost any room in the house, the lake is clearly visible — the Grants wouldn’t have it any other way. At bottom: Peppered throughout the main floor and lower level are items that tell tales from the Grants’ life, whether it’s the Asian decor that harks back to their life in the Far East, the obvious love of winter sports or the warmness of American West’s earth tones. Their home in The Boardwalk was completed in 2013. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

SHORELINES | LAKE HOMES Below: An Asian flair dominates the entrance into the Grants’ home, particularly the dining room. At right: The spacious kitchen is wide enough to accommodate numerous guests, or, as it soon will be, visitors on the Charity Home Tour.

Although the Grants have a number of additional Asian items — like the 4-foot statue of a Chinese water carrier who is standing between two carved jade “pictures” — it never seems like there is too much “stuff” in this home. On the contrary, there are blank spaces, high ceilings, large windows and lots of light that make the home feel roomy and tranquil. Moving to the open kitchen, the island’s cherry cabinetry matches the cherry of the nearby open great room’s built-in shelves. The kitchen cabinets are of a slightly contrasting maple with lots of counter space for Barbara, who loves to cook. The master bedroom is on this level, and it, too, has a soothing Asian feeling about it. There are soft colors, stylish simplicity and a restful lake view. That’s just one level of the home; a trip downstairs is a trip to another decor. Jim’s employer moved the couple to Colorado, and they fell in love with the area. This fact is shown in their home’s lake level, which is furnished and decorated in Western style. Chunky Aspen logs form the legs on bar stools here, and a coffee table has a matching log look. Two end tables are formed by pieces of glass sitting on sturdy rocks. Over the bar hangs an authentic Native

American spear from the Crazy Horse Memorial and Native American Cultural Center in South Dakota. Two lamps have animals carved into their bases. One wall is loaded with photos of their family on ski trips out west. A lamp decorated with bison scenes hangs over the pool table. There is a framed rattlesnake skin, a sheep skin rug and other manly, if not quite Western, decorative items: a kangaroo skin, a mounted striper from SML and a high top table with two boat chairs. Now that the Grants are comfortably ensconced in their new home, they’ve agreed to let others enjoy it also by having it as one of eight featured homes on the 25th anniversary Charity Home Tour on Oct. 9, 10 and 11. “The primary reason that we agreed to open our home,” Barbara said, “was that a friend and neighbor who was once a part the tour said that we should think of it as personally being able to write a check to local charities in the amount of about $20,000. When she put it that way, we knew it was the proper action to take.” 30 July • August 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Time to

grow up Vertical methods add a new dimension to gardening and enhance areas that may have space limitations.

A dominantly horizontal space such as a deck reaches new aesthetic heights with the addition of vertical gardening elements, such as My Garden Post pictured here. Evelyn Walter Ewell of Walter’s Greenhouse in Hardy chose heat- and droughttolerant plants for the post containers. 32 July • August 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

hink tall. The latest trend in gardening is going vertical, and it’s not a passing fad. Vertical gardening adds an important dimension to a design and is particularly effective in docks and patios, tight areas, such as a small deck, and expanses of blank walls or fences.

The walls are alive

The largest living wall in the United States was installed in 2009 on the 30-story PNC Bank building in downtown Pittsburgh. The 2,380-square-foot vertical planting has about 14,448 succulents and other plants growing in 602 panels of soil, each measuring 2 feet by 2 feet. Do try this at home. Today there are all sorts of wall-planting products on the market to make it easy for homeowners to have living walls. With modular hanging pocket systems made of plastic and lined with water-wicking felt, you can create your own wall arrangement with a collection of the units arranged to your taste. Each pocket planter is typically about 15 inches deep and holds 11 quarts of potting mix, a generous space for a wide variety of plants, including ferns. A moisture barrier makes them safe to hang indoors, making it possible to add a new dimension to your house plants as well.

There is an important element of artistry when doing vertical gardening, whether you’re using wires to direct a plant’s growth (above) or complementing the look with a frame (left) or scaling the side of a building as was done with the PNC Bank building in Pittsburgh (right).

growing vines up their support. Consider espaliering a tree or shrub against a wall or up a trellis. The results are sculptural and show the plant off in a whole new way.

Contain your enthusiasm Create living art with specialized planting trays designed for hanging on walls. The trays are divided into planting cells angled to keep the soil in place when the tray is hung. Put a frame around it to finish off the look and plant it with drought-tolerant, shallow-rooted plants such as succulents. Brackets and specialty clips designed to hold up to a 100-pound container are another option for the gardener who wants to move up in the world. Also don’t overlook the possibility of mounting recycled or found objects, such as mason jars or baskets. Another recycled favorite is the wooden pallets found in warehouses. The horizontal pallet slats serve as planting slots. Once planted, prop the pallet up at an angle to make a rustic, vertical display of your plants. Window boxes are another possibility. They don’t have to be placed under windows. Attach a few to a wall in an attractive arrangement. Don’t forget the old-fashioned, tried-and-true trellises. Remember, you don’t need to be limited to 34 July • August 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Merchants also are offering container systems that stand tall. One example is the Tower Garden, a vegetable-growing system that grows plants in a soilless environment, relying on nutrientsupplemented air or mist to support the plants. Another idea is a post with containers attached at different levels on opposite sides. When planted, the result is a layered floral or vegetable arrangement. With these systems, it’s wise to choose plants that are drought and heat tolerant, and even then you’ll need to provide regular watering, especially on hot days. A drip irrigation system with a line fed into each container and set on a timer to come on for 10 or 15 minutes twice a day will ensure that your plants are happily moistened. Vertical gardens can take your landscape design to new heights, transforming a bare fence or wall or a dominantly horizontal dock, patio or deck into a flower bower with pleasing patterns, textures and levels of interest. Catriona Tudor Erler is a freelance garden writer, photographer and speaker who divides her time between SML and Charlottesville. She is the author of nine books on gardening and landscaping.

After years of work and testing on their patented hull design, two lake residents have drawn interest from a West Coast boat manufacturer.

I

Story

by

Jerry Hale

t all started when lakers Wayne and Felicia Davis were watching off-shore power boat racing on TV. Felicia noticed that the newer tunnel hull boat designs were outrunning the more traditional “deep V’s” — so much so that they competed in different “class” categories. Tunnel hulls are built catamaran style — essentially two sculpted pontoons connected by a reinforced deck. The resulting hull shape achieves minimal wetted surface when on plane and creates a cushion of air underneath the deck that helps minimize displacement and drag at high speeds. Tunnel hulls run fast and are relatively fuel efficient. But there’s a downside: They can be prone to “taking flight” on the air cushion, losing their grip on the water and possibly flipping over. And, for the everyday boater, a tunnel-hulled “cat” has very limited internal volume where features such as bunks, galleys, heads and lockers can be located. Only the area inside the narrow pontoons provides weather-protected space for crew comforts. Deep V’s, on the other hand, run on a single hull — essentially a big V-shaped covered bathtub — and below decks there’s lots of room that, in boats longer that 26 feet or so, becomes cabin space. Wayne Davis, too, liked the way the cats ran, but preferred how the deep V’s looked. “It would be nice,” he remembered thinking, “if you could combine the two for the best of both designs.”

Wayne Davis (left), shown with Ben Helmandollar, is an inherent tinkerer who works as a plant electrical technician in Amherst.

That thought prompted the Da-Vee hull design, awarded a U.S. patent in November of 2007. Davis’ innovation was to create a rectangular tunnel centered in the aft section of a traditional hull, retaining the V shape forward to cut through waves and provide usable space below the forward deck. On plane, the boat would mimic the water contact of a tunnel hull design; at displacement speeds, it would look and act like a traditional V hull. And at anchor or dock, much of a V hull’s forward cabin space would have room for creature comforts. An inherent tinkerer who works as a plant electrical technician at the Greif Corp. in Amherst, Davis, 60, began experimenting with his idea. A radio controlled model boat was his first test vessel: He cut into the hull and fabricated a tunnel running from the transom halfway forward. As best he could tell watching from shore, the resulting hybrid hull shape performed just fine, jumping up on plane, running smooth and level, and responding well to rudder inputs. Encouraged, he found a rather neglected 15-foot Glastron GT outboard sport boat offered online. He enlisted the help of boating friend Ben Helmandollar of Hardy (the two had met back in the early 1980s; also a tinkerer, Helmandollar later experimented with a skier-controlled, jet-ski-based towing vessel). The pair hauled the boat home from Pennsylvania, flipped it over and opened up a rectangular hole

about 2 feet wide by 8 feet long and added wooden framing and fiberglass to form the sides and top of the tunnel. Initial water trials of the modified hull showed potential but suggested the tunnel was too wide: the boat wouldn’t reliably stay on plane. Helmandollar located a second 15-foot Glastron GT, which was purchased and modified using what had been learned from the first full-scale attempt. A smaller tunnel was created — this one about 12 inches narrower — and a gradually-deepening inverted V was sculpted into the forward section of the keel to channel air into the tunnel cavity, creating negative pressure inside the tunnel that improves stability. Run using the same 90 horsepower outboard engine as used on yet a third Glastron that Helmandollar found as a comparison boat, the modified boat is capable of 53 mph, about 3 mph faster than the unmodified version. The design also cures the “chine walking” instability that the unmodified Glastron exhibits at high speeds. Confident their testing showed promise, the

experimenters contacted Eliminator Boats, a California-based maker of performance off-shore vessels. Company President Bob Leach sounded curious and, after reviewing video of Da-Vee hull test runs, invited Davis and Helmandollar to visit his West Coast design and manufacturing facility. In the course of their discussions, Leach committed to building a 30-footer using the Da-Vee hull design and selling it at cost — but only if Davis could find a forward-thinking customer willing to spend about $100,000 on the rig. That search is ongoing. Davis and Helmandollar have also reached out to several East Coast builders, finding some interest from Superboat in New York, but so far no commitment to build a boat using the patented design. “This is a labor of love,” Wayne Davis said. “It’s been interesting to explore how the design transfers from idea to a working prototype. It shows promise; we just need to find the right boat builder/customer combination to make it all happen for real.”

n a typical Monday afternoon at the Smith Mountain Lake branch of the Franklin County Family YMCA, you will find the treadmills spinning, several weight machines carefully bobbing up and down and the stationary bikes in a big hurry to go nowhere special. But on the basketball courts you’ll find something a little different. A very low badminton net will be in the middle of the court. A plastic ball — much like a whiffle ball — may be volleyed back and forth between teams of two. But before you notice the court, or the game being played, you may hear an audible “pop” reverberating off the metal walls. It is usually this sound — of the ball being hit by a paddle — that draws curious bystanders in to discover Smith Mountain Lake’s newest sensation: pickleball.

All About picklebAll

Pickleball can be described as a combination of table tennis, tennis and badminton. The court is the size of a badminton court — 20 feet by 44 feet. The ball is very similar to a whiffle ball, and the paddles look like large ping pong paddles. The net is the same size as a badminton net, but much shorter — like a tennis net. like tennis, the ball is served diagonally across the court, over the net. Players must let the ball bounce once before a volley can begin. There is a 7-foot no-volley zone, called the kitchen, on each side of the net. The kitchen is meant to keep players from spiking during a game. Pickleball was the brainchild of congressmen Joel Pritchard, William Bell and Barney McCallum, in Bainbridge Island off the coast of Seattle, in 1965. These men came home from a day of golf to find their kids extremely bored. This game was created and played by the families all summer. Friends and neighbors soon began playing pickleball in their backyards and driveways; they found the game to be both accessible and challenging. Badminton nets were simply lowered, and ping pong paddles were handed out. Lines were drawn many times with chalk. In 1972, pickleball was officially incorporated and all the gear needed for others to play was developed and sold. In the past 40 years, this game has gained popularity and played around the world, but a pickleball explosion has taken place in the past five years among baby boomers, making this game even more available.

Around the world And Around the lAke

In 2005, the new, more organized USA Pickleball Association was formed with a board of directors. The change in this organization was to accommodate the new needs of pickleball as it transitioned from small family gatherings to more competitive and publicly played games and tournaments. The sport has nearly doubled the number of courts since 2010 in the U.S., thanks to the participation of many community centers and P.E. classes. Smith Mountain Lake resident Sherry Thorne learned of pickleball while wintering in Sun and Fun, a retirement community in Sarasota, Florida, three years ago. An avid athlete and previous tennis player, she found this game as many others did — captivating and invigorating. Upon Thorne’s return to Virginia, she and her husband met with Ron Willard II to discuss bringing the sport to the lake and to The Waterfront Country Club. In their meeting, the Thornes did more than discuss the sport, they taught Willard to play. “We hit the ball three or four times, and a big grin came on his face, and we said, ‘We got ya,’” Thorne explained.

fundamental core value upon which our country was founded is the steadfast belief that we take care of each other in our times of greatest need. It may not always be readily apparent, but Americans are very charitable. According to The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, a whopping 95.4 percent of U.S. households give to charity each year. In 2013, for example, Americans gave $335.17 billion in support of charitable events and organizations. This reflects a 4.4 percent increase from 2011, according to data from Giving USA. What has also increased over the past decade is not only the dollar amounts given, but the number of events where individuals can donate their time as well as open their wallets. Consider last year’s fundraising phenomenon known as the Ice Bucket Challenge. This challenge — to post a video of oneself being doused with a bucket of cold water and to challenge friends and family to do the same as well as contribute to the efforts to address Lou Gehrig’s Disease (also known as ALS) — was an international sensation. The Ice Bucket Challenge has raised, to date, over $220 million for the ALS SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

SML Glacier Plunge is one of the few charitable events that occurs during our chilly winter months. This past January, more than 30 people gallantly donned their bathing suits out of season and took the plunge, which resulted in more than $2,000 in charitable contributions. Funds are raised through pledges from friends and family who support the plunge. “We’ve had participants travel to honor a loved one,” noted Lauren Acker, director of the Smith Mountain Lake branch of the Franklin County Family YMCA. “Others participate to prove their friends wrong, and yet others join it because they believe and fully support the mission of the Franklin County YMCA. It’s all in the name of fun and a good cause.” Participants receive a commemorative event towel, and supporters who attend the plunge can also attend the post-plunge party at The Landing Restaurant for a donation of $5 or more. Dick was key in starting the Bath County Triathlon in June at Lake Moomaw that continues to this day. He was great guy and I miss him.” Lampman also noted that this year a donation of $500 to the ALS Foundation will be made in Dick Kelley’s memory thanks to the generous fundraising that resulted from this year’s triathlon.

each May is Bethlehem United Methodist Church’s golf tournament to raise funds for local charities. In 2014 the tournament raised enough funds to provide more than $1,100 to each of the designated organization recipients. In its seventh year in 2015, this year’s tournament, which took place at The Westlake, offered numerous prizes including a chance to win a $10,000 cash hole-in-one prize, a

flat screen TV, set of Callaway Diablo Irons and two airline tickets to anywhere in the U.S. When asked why the tournament is named for Andy Andrews, the tournament chairman, Rick Carroll, noted, “Andy was a driving force in our church and in the community. He was the primary person in the recent $1.4 million building enhancement to our church and was a great fundraiser for the golf tournament. With his sudden passing, it seemed appropriate for us to honor him by naming the tournament after him.” SML Tom Maynard Memorial Poker Run. When the sun starts to shine in May and winter is truly behind us, it’s time for the Tom Maynard Memorial Poker Run. After a fun-filled day the boats return to submit their cards and register what they hope to be the winning hand. In addition to the prize for the best hand, there are winners in categories such as the worst hand, marked aces, best dressed crew, best engineered boat, best appearing boat and most players on a boat. Everyone is treated to a post-race awards cookout where many tall tales are known to be shared. SML Charity Home Tour. This charity home tour is one of the premier charitable events at Smith Mountain Lake and supports critical services for those in need in the SML region. The event is made possible through extensive coordination of 1,200 volunteers as well as partnerships with charities, businesses and individuals. The tour, which includes eight homes, is a three-day event taking place in 2015 from Oct. 9 through Oct. 11. When asked why homeowners donate their homes for the tour, Denise Tuttle, Home Tour executive chair, said, “Our tour

homeowners tend to be folks who are communityminded and generous. Many of them, following their participation on the tour, become key tour leaders and volunteers.” Over its 25-year history the tour has raised an impressive $3.8 million for local charities. When asked why she believed the tour had been so successful over such a long period of time, Tuttle offered, “I once stopped in to one of our lake establishments to solicit a pledge for that year’s tour. One of the wait staff approached us and shared how she had experienced a really rough time several years ago and could not pay her bills. She noted that one of the current year’s charities stepped in and helped her get back on her feet. For this reason, she said she would always be a supporter of the SML Charity Home Tour.” Tuttle also emphasized that there is an application process for local charities to be considered as recipients of tour fundraising. Many of us want to be young at heart, to let our spirit roam free and get caught up in the things that made childhood joyous. Sometimes that feeling meant diving into a thrill without hesitation, without fear. Other times, it was simply being simple, where fun came easy and time mattered little. The responsibilities of family life and work throughout a large part of our lives force us to suppress those pieces of childhood. But how exciting is it to reconnect with our inner child, to revive childhood delights and to let ourselves get taken away by that feeling?

Rolling with skee-ball There’s always so much anticipation in the roll. Even if you practice your technique — your step, your release, your follow through — it’s hard to know until the very end whether you’ve hit your tiny target. Go for 50 or 100 points; end up with just 10. That’s the luck people often have with this childhood favorite. Skee-ball, which dates back more than a century, is a bit like alley bowling but on a significantly smaller scale. At the far end is a ramp that lifts the ball you rolled toward cups that are assigned point values. It’s hard not to channel that inner-child (and share some high-fives) when big points are scored. And for the competitor in us, going head-to-head against a friend is a thrill. Skee-ball has long been a fixture of arcades around the nation, and Fun-N-Games Arcade at Bridgewater Plaza has two alleys available to play for just a quarter a game.

This summer, it’s worth a try, and here are a few things to help get you on your way:

LEFT. Sam Rankin rolls a ball down a skee-ball alley as his wife, Ruth, looks on encouragingly. The couple, who live near Rocky Mount, was spending time at Bridgewater Plaza, where Fun-NGames Arcade has two skee-ball alleys. RIGHT. Sam Rankin goes for big points on the skee-ball alley. The buckets range from 10 points to 100 points. FAR RIGHT. Tickets, which can be redeemed for prizes, are given out by skee-ball machines. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

big fun with mini golf There’s no need to worry about a little white ball spoiling your good walk on these courses — and that’s not just because the balls tend to be blue, red, green or yellow. Mini golf is 18 holes of challenging fun, flanked by waterfalls, trees and various other teases that might tempt you to take your eye off the prize. Whether taking a swing with your significant other or lining up each putt with your kids or grandkids, the laughter will entice you back for more. There are three places in the lake area where you can battle the bumps, corners and quirkiness of a mini golf course: Hot Shots Family Fun Center and Westlake Safari Miniature Golf in Westlake and Harbortown Miniature Golf at Bridgewater Plaza. It’s the kind of game that proves high school geometry wasn’t a waste of time.

Saddle up for horSeback riding It’s the ultimate in horse power. About half a dozen farms in the Smith Mountain Lake area will guide a novice and expert alike on a trail ride. The farmers and ranchers who organize these rides are a personable bunch and are eager to share their trade with anyone willing to reconnect with childhood excitement. Don’t expect every ride to end with a vista overlooking Smith Mountain Lake, but what can be certain is views of rolling hills, mountains and rural regions you might not otherwise explore. When you call to set up a ride, be sure to ask for directions as many of these farms are well off the beaten path.

Hot Shots Family Fun Center in Westlake is dotted with greenery just before the heavy tourist season gets underway.

But when was the last time you got some in a cone and sat outside, racing to keep it from dripping down onto your hand? Add into that the smiles of family and friends, and summer feels more complete. Whether tubing behind a motorboat or a personal watercraft, there’s always going to be a sense of youthful intensity by speeding along the lake surface or catching the lip of the wake just right to get your inner tube airborne. Companies on both sides of the lake have watercraft to rent if you don’t have your own. But once you’re situated on the tube, be sure hold on tight. This will be one wild ride!

By land, sea and air — these are the three key ways to embrace the majestic nature of the local playground we know as Smith Mountain Lake. While many residents and tourists easily check off the first two, it’s No. 3, the aerial perspective, that many don’t get to enjoy. What follows are landmarks and other hotspots around the lake as seen from the cockpit of an SML Aviation plane. There’s little need for words; the images should speak for themselves. The Hales Ford Bridge is the most prominent connection between the Bedford County and Franklin County sides of the lake. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

The barrier for many people to see the lake from above is access to a plane. Enter SML Aviation. Cellphones, electronic books and fast food have made instant gratification something people have become accustomed to. Getting away from the hustle and bustle and taking time to drive the back roads immediately around the lake, to enjoy the green scenery through a slower pace of life, can be just what’s needed to be grounded once again — even if it’s just for one day.

Visiting the Smith Mountain Dam can make for a relaxing day trip for lake visitors, and it’s not a trip that most locals take often. Sure, they’ve probably been there once — maybe several years ago. But with lots to see and do while hugging the roads around SML, it makes for a great time to revisit the most powerful property on the lake. Hop in the car, buckle up and head down to the less crowded corners of the water. Whether on the Bedford County or Franklin County side of the lake, there are interesting places to stop

Traveling farther into Union Hall you’ll come across Trocadero Limited on the right side of the road. From a distance, Trocadero looks like a furniture store, (which it is, and it has gorgeous selections); however, if you’re not in the market for furniture, Trocadero also has selections of delicious wine and gourmet foods. The store boasts home decor, clothing and shoe sections as well.

When headed from Franklin County toward the dam, you’ll be rolling down Virginia 40. As you’re entering the Union Hall area, you’ll find a breathtaking view on the left side of the road. Smith Mountain Dam is a powerful sight. On site, there is a visitors center with interactive displays as well as a picnic area.

Back on the road, follow the signs to Smith Mountain Dam. This country drive surrounded by the mountains is gorgeous. After a while of driving, you may feel as though you are headed in the wrong direction. Chances are, though, that is the point in which you are almost there. A scenic picnic area surrounding a water reservoir is one of the first things a visitor sees, and with paved walking paths, it is a beautiful area to take an afternoon stroll.

Take some time and weave through the dam’s visitors center to learn about the processes and mechanics of the dam. There, you’ll also learn about how far the electricity that the dam produces travels into other states. Make sure to walk the paved path up the mountain to view the dam. And take a camera; it’s picture worthy. After visiting the dam, the route on the Bedford County side of the lake goes through numerous curves, bypassing trees and wildlife along the way. The long road ends at an intersection with Smith Mountain Lake Parkway.

hen Michael King and Sara Gordon decided — in less than 48 hours — to relocate from the Indiana-Illinois border to Smith Mountain Lake, they were motivated (as one might expect) by a dream. With five children ages 10 to 1 ½ in tow, no home secured and no restaurant ownership experience, these parents and restaurant industry veterans decided to realize that dream by trekking to the Southeast and opening Dock It Grille and Bar at Indian Point Marina, in the space previously occupied by Los Machados Mexican restaurant. Their dream has since become their ultimate polar bear challenge, as they scramble to bring operations of the waterside restaurant up to meet the demands of enthusiastic customers at the lake, one accelerated by media coverage just before Memorial Day weekend. They’ve quickly realized that their casual-dining concept, which serves a wide, but simple, menu ranging from hot dogs to prime rib and specializes in comfort foods like macaroni and cheese, fresh-cut french fries and country fried steak, is a labor of love that will need

some equipment tweaking, staff training and a lot of intra-couple moral support. The end goal: emerge from the icy waters of drastic change (and a lot of it) with a family legacy built on the shores of their newly beloved SML. Gordon and King are no strangers to change — the couple met while working at Cracker Barrel in Santee, South Carolina, in 2005. In a nearly 10year span, they moved their growing family to a climatically extreme Rollins, Wyoming, then back to the western edge of Indiana (Kentland), on the Illinois border, where King transferred with Travel Centers of America and Gordon took on the role of stay-at-home mom. Then the winds of change kicked up again last December and began to point them in the direction of Smith Mountain Lake. “We weren’t happy [in the Midwest] anymore. Long story short, I just said, ‘The heck with it,’ and quit my job,” King said. “We were living off of savings, and in early February, Sara’s mother called us about an opportunity here that she’d heard of through a friend. They wanted to open a restaurant at the marina. We were skeptical at first.” A road trip in early February from Indiana to

Roanoke to visit Sara’s mother, Laurie Gordon, led to a tour of the Smith Mountain Lake area and a meeting with Indian Point Marina owners Tim and Caroline Wray, who quickly replaced skepticism with optimism in the minds of Gordon and King. “We hit it off right away,” King said. “I was still skeptical because I’m one of those ‘if it’s too good to be true, it probably is’ people, but after talking to them for two days, we had a handshake agreement that we would do it.” Tim Wray saw the potential at that meeting as well. “I saw a team that had a dream and was willing to work with heart, a great menu and was willing to get in there, roll their sleeves up and do it,” he said. After spending the rest of February readying for the move, they landed in Wirtz on March 1 and found a suitable rental home within three days. They immediately began renovating the restaurant space and finalizing Dock It’s menu. The original target opening date was April 20, but Gordon and King ultimately decided to wait until May 1. Getting Charlie, 9, Marlene, 7, Bree, 6, Landon, 3, and Hudson, 19 months, settled into home, school and daycare routines, had to take priority over an

aggressive opening date, and in doing so Gordon and King recognized they’d need to make more changes. “That’s when we made an agreement with Sara’s mother that she would quit her job and take care of the kids full-time. She’s been a godsend. It’s hard to leave five kids with a stranger,” King said. For Gordon, having her mother as her children’s primary care giver has given her confidence in taking the leap into to her role as a first-time restaurant owner and wait staff manager. “This is the first time I’ve left them. I was always home, I even worked from home,” Gordon said. Her admitted maternal guilt is rivaled, though, by her vision for her and her family’s future. “It’s the simple fact that we want to build something for them to have later on. In eight years, maybe seven, I can picture Charlie working back here. I don’t want to leave them, but I have to leave them, and I want to show, also, that hard work will eventually pay off and that they can do anything they put their hearts to.” The hardest part for Gordon has been missing small moments in her children’s lives and subjecting them to someone else’s way of doing things. “I can’t do everything [for the kids] that I used to. My mom’s not used to having five kids, so we’re missing a lot of things for them — like I’m not there to check their backpacks, make sure their homework gets done,” she said. She also feels she obsesses over their well-being when she’s at work. “We have to have everything organized for my mom, and she’s doing a great job, trying her hardest, and she’s creating her own system. We have to get used to that, too,” she said. “They’re my main heart,

but I have to remember in the background that I’m doing this for them.” The restaurateur road is already bumpy operationally as well, the couple admits. There are many parallels between raising a large family and growing a business that mushrooms on a dime, Gordon and King feel. They’re relying on their partnership as both parents and restaurant owners to give them the fortitude they’ll need to weather the rocky start. “We have to pump each other up,” King said. “You have to be prepared, but there are things that you’re not going to be prepared for, and you have to react fast.” Friday night of Memorial Day weekend was their first test at the restaurant. “During the first dinner service, things went crazy,” King recalled, when he says 70 people showed up for dinner simultaneously and the kitchen became overwhelmed. “A couple of employees, including

Sara herself, started saying, ‘We can’t do this, there’s no way.’ That’s when I said, ‘Yes, we can do this — you go out there and explain things, do your best, give it all you’ve got and we’ll get through it.’ ” Gordon and King agree that kitchen operations need to be expanded and their wait staff needs to be solidly trained, things they feel confident they can make happen. “We know we can do it, we just have to iron out the kinks,” Gordon said. “This is totally new to me; I was a server.” Media coverage in Laker Weekly’s May 20 edition preceding Memorial Day weekend also helped them see their weak spots. “With the newspaper article this weekend, we were trying to crawl, and we were forced to stand up before we could walk, and we stumbled and almost smashed our faces,” Gordon said. The couple said they’re grateful for the enthusiastic welcome to the lake and are focused on serving Smith Mountain Lake’s residents and visitors fantastic food with exceptional service. “We want our customers to feel like we invited them to dinner at our house,” King said. “We are inviting them to our house to eat; we want to exceed their expectations.” At the end of the day, King said his strong partnership with Gordon is what will help Dock It sail through its growing pains. “We work well together because my weaknesses are her strengths and vice versa,” he said. “I keep the calm, and she makes the chaotic feel normal because she’s so great with people. She’s like the duck swimming along in the water that looks so perfect but underneath is scrambling like crazy. You’ll never see her sweat.”

Savor the flavor of

Bob Bryden sits on his comfortable and shaded patio, one of his favorite spots to enjoy wine at his home in the WindTree subdivision of Franklin County.

lmost everyone knows someone they consider to be highly knowledgeable about wine and other adult beverages. Most of the time these folks have established a reputation for being able to speak authoritatively about wine or taste a wine and describe it in a fashion that others can understand. Some folks take it a step further by earning professional certifications. They must be willing to dedicate a massive effort and pecuniary resources to master a series of exams that may be the hardest test you have never heard of. Welcome to the Court of Master Sommeliers, which promotes excellence in hotel and restaurant beverage service. Smith Mountain Lake is fortunate to include among its residents Bob Bryden, who earned the prestigious Sommelier Certification in February. The level of difficulty of the exam is hard to comprehend. The court offers four levels of certification, from introductory to master sommelier. Bryden earned the level II certified sommelier designation. To make it to level II, you have to pass level I first. That first level is essentially a 70-question multiplechoice exam pertaining to all facets of wine regions, grape varieties, geography, production and history. This test has a pass rate in the 70 to 80 percent range. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Bob Bryden, who earned the prestigious Sommelier Certification in February, notes that sight and smell are the most important ways to identify a wine.

Once a candidate has passed the introductory exam, he or she can return within three years to try the certified sommelier exam. This exam consists of three components: written theory, blind tasting and service practical. The tester has 30 minutes to answer 40 questions presented in multiple choice, matching and short answer format. Bryden passed the written exam and the blind tasting the first time he took the test. The blind tasting portion is tough. Students are presented with a red wine and a white wine that they evaluate using a grid provided by the court. They have 15 minutes to identify about 20 attributes

including color, aroma and flavor components. If a fruit component is detected, such as apple, what is the condition of the fruit: ripe, cooked, baked or oxidized? Is mushroom, stone, mineral, sulfur or oak detected? Students are expected to massage all of this assessment into an argument as to whether this is an old world or new world wine, state the country of origin, vintage, producer and grape variety. Even if the wrong wine is determined, a certain amount of points can be awarded if their argument makes sense. Then there is the service practical, where a student will have to demonstrate wine service, champagne service or decanting. Bryden was asked to properly open and serve a bottle of champagne. He removed the foil, and eased the cork out very slowly, but not gingerly enough as a slight hissing sound was emitted, causing him to fail. Absolutely no noise can be made when opening bubbly as to not disturb other guests. Since the court does not give you credit for what is passed, Bryden failed the entire exam. Bryden returned home to practice opening bottles

of bubbly so he could take the test again. He opened 60 bottles in 40 days to refine his skill. While the candidate is concentrating on opening a bottle with 96 pounds of pressure silently, the judges are peppering him with questions, such as, “Name five fortified wines other than port or sherry.” Another question he was asked was, “I am having oysters with a mignonette sauce. What wine would you pair with that?” When he replied with the answer of sancerre, a crisp and tart French white wine, which is a good choice, he was then asked to name two producers in another country that make a similar wine. Candidates are also quizzed about beer, mixed drinks and sake. After months of studying opening

and tasting wine, Bryden re-took all three components of the exam in Charleston, South Carolina, and passed them all. He relaxed afterward with a wee dram of Balvenie Scotch. Bryden emphasized that someone cannot do this alone. He enlisted the help of another local certified sommelier, Stephen Foster. He practiced by tasting six to eight wines a day for 13 months, sampling the wines and then spitting so he could retain his mental faculty. At the end of the day, he and his wife would sit on his dock and enjoy some wine in a normal fashion. Bryden pointed out that at the age of 70 he might be one of the oldest people to earn this certification. Most of the candidates are much younger and work in the hotel or restaurant business. So what led Bryden to undertake such a challenge? Bryden graduated from Sam Houston College in 1968 with a criminal justice degree and worked in the prison system for a while before joining the Drug Enforcement Administration as a special agent in 1972. He then transferred to Washington, District of Columbia, in 1976 to take a high level job with the DEA. He would routinely eat lunch with his boss who would order high end wines like Puligny-Montrachet and Romanee-Conti. While Bryden could not afford these opulent wines

at the time, his curiosity was aroused and he started reading books and looking for French wines to try. His introductory wine was Chateau de la Chaize Broully, a Cru Beaujolais that is a step above pedestrian Beaujolais. He found the name easy to pronounce and the wine light, fruity and easy to enjoy. He then graduated to Morgon, another Cru Beaujolais with more substance and backbone. After that, he started trying Bordeaux and Rhone wines with their complexity of flavors and aromas. After some years with the DEA, he took a job as director of security for FedEx, which included world travel and the opportunity to try wines and visit vineyards around the world. He purchased a home at the lake in 2003 and retired there permanently in 2006. He fell in with a crowd of folks who enjoyed high end wines, and his palate and expertise were appreciated. In 2013 he saw the movie, Somm, which is a true story about four guys who take on the daunting challenge of passing the master sommelier exam.

At the time there were less than 200 master sommeliers in the world. Bryden became intrigued and was looking for something to do. He likes a challenge, so he started studying. Today he uses his knowledge to help educate others about wine. He is writing a book that teaches other retirees how to evaluate and enjoy wine. He also teaches wine courses at Blackwater Cafe. The classes consist of four two-hour sessions. He teaches students how to differentiate dry vs. sweet, mineral components in contrast to fruit, alcohol and acid levels and how to detect oak flavors and tannins. At completion students get a crack at differentiating an earth and mineral dominated old world wine from a fresh and fruity new world wine. In addition he offers consulting services to local restaurants to help them improve their wine lists, select good wines from distributors and train staff. For those building a wine cellar, he can give construction and storage tips and advise about wines for special events, such as weddings.

Magic Fishing Panties

K

imberly Dalferes has traded in the “crazed energy” from her first book for more balance — and it suits her. “I Was in Love with a Short Man Once,” published in 2011, offered insights into pieces of Dalferes’ life: growing up in southern Florida, being a single mom, moving to the Washington, D.C., area, to name a few. “After I finished it,” she said, “I had a lot of people asking me, ‘So, what happens next?’ I’m like, ‘I grew up.’ They said, ‘OK, what does that mean?’” Dalferes started to think about that and about whether people would be interested in the 50-yearold perspective. The second book, “Magic Fishing Panties,” emerged with a focus on girlfriends and relationships and midlife. The author had found balance, something she didn’t have when her first book was published.

“I had no idea how much I needed it [balance] until I took it. My perspective moved away from that sort of frenetic, independent, single-mom, getting-married-for-a-second-time crazed energy in the first book. In the second book, I realized I needed to slow down, appreciate life, appreciate my girlfriends, because I started to look at the fact that I have more time behind me than I do in front of me.” Dalferes was living year-round in Northern Virginia when “Short Man” came out, but she has since bought a house at Smith Mountain Lake. Much of “Magic Fishing Panties” was written at the lake. “Some of that balance may come from the fact that we now split our time between Smith Mountain Lake and Fairfax,” Dalferes said. “That definitely influenced the tone of this book — a little more laid-back, a little more accepting.” She said middle-age women will enjoy this book the most and that she would be surprised if

Where They Found Her By Kimberly McCreight A tiny, beaten body has washed ashore in a creek. And the only reporter available is a rookie on the arts beat who’s emerging from the fog of depression after the loss of her own baby. Sniffing out leads could send her into a tailspin, as her husband fears. He voices concern tentatively, then adamantly — and then you begin to fear for their marriage. Rest assured our heroine finds her answers, but her life and many others are forever changed. — Gretchen Tipps

A Severe Mercy By Sheldon Vanauken Upon my second reading of this 1977 book, I learned much about the renowned C.S. Lewis through letters sent to Vanauken following his wife’s death. “A Severe Mercy” is a love story, with each reading lending to the understanding that eros does not exist within a vacuum unto itself, but is of, and continues to be, orchestrated by God. The book’s version of love is a close dissection into what it means to commit to another human being. This is a true story, for true romantics and lovers of poetry, beauty and, most of all, God. — Jane Amelia Smith

$ 20-somethings and men could relate to it. However, she notes a review she’d gotten about “Short Man” from a retired Navy captain. He had picked up the book after his wife set it down at a public pool — and he couldn’t stop laughing. He said, noting the title of the book, that maybe she should have hidden it with a fake book jacket. Dalferes remarked, proudly: “Wow, I wrote a book that someone needs another cover to cover up!”

Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin By Timothy Snyder This powerful narrative takes readers through the destruction of life and livelihood perpetrated by the regimes in Germany and the Soviet Union in the 1930s and ’40s. Ethnic cleansing and famine reshaped eastern Europe, and as uncomfortable as it may be to learn the inner workings of how some of the 20th century’s greatest atrocities played out, Timothy Snyder captures this history with vivid detail and insight. It conjures sadness and darkness, fueled by the understanding that this is no fairy tale — although it’s clear that monsters do exist. “Bloodlands” is not light reading, but it is intellectually challenging and eye-opening. — Ryan Tipps

Hello, my name is Kim, and I’m a coffee addict. Hello Kim! As far back as I can remember I’ve needed my cup of joe each morning to help wipe away the cobwebs. I suppose there are worse vices: I don’t smoke, I don’t do drugs, and I drink in moderation (OK, this last one might be subject for debate, especially during our beautiful summer months here at the lake). I’ve discovered some wonderful places to feed my caffeine habit at SML. I’m particularly fond of the java they brew at Carl’s Place. Throughout the summer as I trek back and forth to the lake — I’m not yet a full-timer, just a wannabe — I’ve mapped out the best locations to stop for a coffee break. Charlottesville is about the midpoint of my journey, and the Starbucks on U.S. 29 has become my go-to for a coffee pit-stop. However, just when I think I’ve got it all figured out, the universe jumps in and messes up my routine. Apparently, the universe needs an occasional laugh. Zipping along on a sunny Friday afternoon I cruised right by my Charlottesville Starbucks coffee break detour. Ah heck, now what am I going to do? I thought. A quick look-see on Google maps confirmed the next Starbucks wasn’t available until Lynchburg. Nope, couldn’t wait another hour. A Dunkin Donuts popped up on the map locator, but the wall of doughnut deliciousness that confronts me as I walk through the DD doors is a diet buster.

Salvation: I spied a nearby 7-Eleven on the map. Their coffee is downright respectable. I approached the register with coffee in hand and placed the cup on the counter. “Oh, you’re buying the extra large coffee!” noted the cashier, who appeared to have herself consumed a bit too much caffeine. “Um, yep.” “With that you get a muffin!” Sigh. “No, I’m good. Thanks anyway.” “No really, they’re totally free! Just filled the case behind you, it’s a special promo.” “Nah, all I need is the coffee.” “Come on, you look like you could use a little snack. How can you turn down a free muffin?” Now the cashier was eyeing me suspiciously. She seemed to be contemplating whether I was one of those anti-muffin types they don’t take too kindly to in these here parts. Deciding that resistance was clearly futile, I turned and stepped over to the case, grabbed one of the huge blueberry treats, and turned back to set it on the counter. “OK, we cool now?” I asked. “Oh very, you’re gonna love it.” I suffered through the remaining hours of my trip with the smell of that muffin temptress filling the car. I sipped my coffee and glared ahead, determined to not so much as nibble a crumb. Upon arrival I went straight out back and spread the muffin across the yard for the ducks. Somehow, that seemed fitting. Now, who wants to meet me at Carl’s for coffee?
