Fifty years. You’re going to hear that a lot in 2016. On March 7, 1966, Smith Mountain Lake — a unified body of water borne out of a patchwork of rivers and creeks — had reached full pond. Next up was the pursuit of its full potential.

At its heart, the creation of the lake was about power. The pumped-storage system that involved both SML and Leesville Lake was a hydroelectric marvel of its day. But Smith Mountain Lake grew to be so much more than that as an economic driver for the region.

That is largely what’s being celebrated this year: the fact that we all have this place that draws us in for a weekend or a season or a lifetime, and it’s home to us. Smith Mountain Lake was an amazing place long before it reached 50 years old; now we get to be reminded of how great things are here.

Because full pond was reached in the wee hours of the morning, just after 5 a.m. that March morning so long ago, it’s unlikely the milestone was met with the immense fanfare we will see this year, now that 50 summers have gone by.

GUIDE TO SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE
The 14-year-old took home two first-place finishes at the National Watercross Championships in West Virginia. By Jerry Hale Special to Laker Weekly
Matthew Richuk, 14, a parttime lake resident, who also lives in High Point, North Carolina, recently scored a pair of first place finishes in Junior Ski Stock 13-15 Year and Junior Ski Ltd. divisions at the National Watercross Championships in Charleston, West Virginia. The two-day event, held Aug. 15 and 16, was Richuk’s first national competition and his third organized racing outing, preceded by a pair of events in Florida earlier this year on oceanfront courses, according to his father, Phil Richuk. The sport of watercross involves racing laps around a set of course buoys using standup Jet Skis. Each lap takes about two minutes to complete, so a typical four- to six-lap race is completed in about 10 minutes. “He did amazingly well, especially considering he com-

Because Virginia law requires personal watercraft operators be at least 14 years old, Richuk has had only a few chances to ride legally until this year, while competitors from some other states have been riding since age 10, Phil Richuk said. While Richuk’s mother, Karen, doesn’t attend all of her son’s races, she does catch the live feeds on the Pro Watercross Racing website. Phil and Tammy Brimer of Hardy traveled to Alaska, getting to see Denali. The mountain, the tallest in North America with a summit elevation of 20,237 feet, is located in the 6.2 million acre Denali National Park. “At about 18,000 feet, the baseto-peak rise is considered the largest of any mountain situated entirely above sea level. We were truly blessed to get this picture as only 10 percent of Alaska visitors get to see the whole mountain!” the couple said. Denali’s name was formally changed from Mount McKinley in August.
Stephen and Nancy Fitzgerald of Goodview traveled with the July/August 2015 issue of Laker Magazine to Alaska. They went with their daughter, son-in-law and four grandchildren to Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, as well as Victoria, British Columbia, on the Carnival cruise ship Legend. The Fitzgeralds were celebrating 40 years of marriage.
Europe
Alps Mike Gardell Jr. spent more than three weeks traveling in Switzerland, France and Italy. He spent the first two weeks climbing mountains — ranging from 9,600 feet to 13,400 feet — in the Alps with a group of friends. Afterward, he split from the group, rented a motorcycle in Geneva and rode it over the Alps to several Italian cities. While in St. Margherita, he investigated his family name, Gardella (now Gardell), and discovered that his ancestors came from the town of Neirone in the Genoa Province of Italy, close to where he was staying on his trip. This picture is from there, his family’s ancestral hometown.

Sue and Dick Robertson of Moneta visited the historic town of Bruges, Belgium. They also visited northern England, Amsterdam, Luxembourg and Trier, Germany. The couple traced Dick’s heritage, through Annstruther, Scotland, South Shields and Liverpool, England, meeting cousins in the latter, recently found through Ancestry.com.

Iceland Gary and Kathryn Rudolf visited Skogafoss Falls in Iceland in early September. “We were on vacation with friends who had been to Iceland four times and spoke so highly of it we decided to try it,” Gary said. This particular day was rainy, although most of the vacation had nice weather.
France Bob and Molly Banta traveled in September with a group in France and visited a friend in his restored farm house in the French countryside. They started their tour in Bordeaux and then proceeded to Sarlat and Saint Malo, among other spots. “From there we traveled east to the Normandy beaches where we walked both Utah and Omaha and viewed the American Cemetery above Omaha beach,” Bob said. After seeing so much, they went to Nantes to their friend’s farmhouse.
Alaska Wayne and Cynthia Burris and Charlene Jones of Moneta traveled to Alaska on a cruise in June with the May/June issue of the Laker Magazine. The Burrises enjoyed being with their Kauai, Hawaii, grandchildren on board. Dog sledding in Juneau was Jones’ highlight of the trip.
Romania Dan and Nan Jones of Moneta, Ken and Wendy Ralph and Bill and Gale Taylor of Union Hall and Bob and Joyce Clement of Victor, New York, spent 10 days touring Romania along with tour director Aaron Garber and tour guide Emil Toader. Among the beautiful places in Transylvania they visited was the unusual Turda Salt Mine. They also visited Albu Iulia one of the oldest known settlements in Romania, with inhabitants dating back to 106 B.C., much of which has been beautifully restored. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

ebbie and Jim Mould had a vacation home near the airport at Smith Mountain Lake, and like many vacationers, they got to looking at other lake houses and property. They found what they were looking for in Franklin County. “I loved the dock and the exterior of this house,” Debbie Mould said. “And four years after we first saw it, the house was for sale. We bought it and moved here from Gainsville, Virginia. ... “This house has so much character. I think it looks sort of Mediterranean with its many arches. We liked the inside, too. That is, until we moved in. Suddenly everything (in the 15-year-old house) seemed small, dark and closed in,” she said. “I was depressed for two years.” But all of the problems were fixable. The Moulds remodeled the kitchen, painted the cabinets, added granite, opened it up to the great room and to the dining room, replaced small kitchen windows with sliders that open to a new deck, and painted everything, including the dark molding. Rooms with brown industrial-looking carpet got new hardwood floors that blended into already existing wood floors in the rest of the home. It looked like a new house. Now it needed the decorative touches to finish it off. For three years Mould had been volunteering at the SML Discovery Shop, staging all of the furniture and accessories in the shop and at the annex, when the twice-a-year sales of furniture market pieces took place. She knew where great quality merchandise could be bought at a great price — at the Discovery Shop. Many items Mould bought were too unusual to appeal to the average shopper, but she had vision —she would repaint the frame of a mirror (actually she’s done this on many mirrors) or recover a piece of furniture to fit her color scheme. The Discovery Shop has a policy that volunteers cannot purchase an

item until it has been on the floor for 24 hours. Most of the pieces Mould bought had been in the shop for a lengthy period of time and had been reduced from their original price. Taking a tour of the house with Mould provides a glimpse into her ebullient personality and her sense of decorating style. “We opened up the wall to the dining room and installed these columns,” she said. “And look at the two mirrors I got from the shop. Well, originally they had brown wood trim, but I painted them silver. Then I found these large bird paintings. I like drama. I like big.” The two story living room feels cozy with a table in front of the sofa and a lamp and accessories from the Discovery Shop, yet it looks expansive thanks to the room’s height and the big windows to the lake. In the main floor master bedroom, the Moulds

replaced two small windows with a new, big slider, and from the Discovery Shop, Mould bought a dresser that she painted and a bench that she had recovered. The couple reconfigured and updated the master bath. The stairway landing en route to the second floor sports a sofa table, lamp and a vase, all from the shop. In the upstairs guest bedroom, Mould’s Discovery Shop items include a formerly rust-colored wall sculpture that she repainted, a mirrored headboard, a mirror around which she added rope, and a side table she repainted to which she added matching rope. In the lower level family room, a comfy chair with ottoman and tall wooden table came from the Discovery Shop, as did the large palm-tree painting. Remember, Mould said she likes “big” and “drama.” The guest bedroom features a large mirror from the shop. 26 January • February 2016 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

“I love mirrors,” Mould said. “They really brighten up a room.” There are also two decorative mirrors in the kitchen. The Moulds’ most recent project has been adding a bigger deck outside the master bedroom. Jim Mould was working and pounding on the deck during a tour of the house. And they are having an outdoor kitchen installed in the patio beneath that deck. Now Debbie Mould will be hunting for outdoor art to fill out the decorative spaces. Imagine what she will discover at the Discovery Shop.
Mirrors (far left) are perhaps one of the most consistent decorations throughout the house, but there are many other treasures (above) found elsewhere.

ohn Rupnik of Huddleston had a deer problem. A deer trail ran through his property, making the land a veritable highway for their nightly feeding migrations. The Rupniks’ garden plants were devoured. After many years of losing the battle against the deer, Rupnik decided to get serious about keeping them out. This problem is not surprising. White-tailed deer are the most populous wild animal species in Virginia, with more living here today than at any other time in the state’s history. Experts estimate that there are about 850,000 to 1 million deer in the state, and their population is growing. These statistics are a dramatic rebound from 1900 when deer hunting for food and hides brought the commonwealth’s deer population almost to the point of extinction (the population estimate at its nadir is 25,000). Protective game laws and importing deer from other states beginning in 1926 triggered a population rebound. The Virginia Department of Game and

John Rupnik installed his black net fencing himself. He said the project took about three days to complete.
High deer population statistics won’t come as a surprise to gardeners who despair when deer nibble their hostas to nubs, nip tulip flowers the night before they open and gobble up hydrangeas and other tasty plants.
Inland Fisheries continued to import white-tailed deer for 66 years, finally stopping in 1992. Meanwhile, each doe gives birth to two to three fawns annually, making it possible for the population to continue growing exponentially. High deer population statistics won’t come as a surprise to gardeners who despair when deer nibble their hostas to nubs, nip tulip flowers the night before they open and gobble up hydrangeas and other tasty plants. Deer are a problem. What’s a gardener to do? The Rupniks have found a solution that — so far — is working well. John built a fence, enclosing approximately 3/4 of an acre of his land. This was not one of your costly, visually enclosing wooden fences or an unsightly chainlink. Instead John Rupnik opted for a heavy-duty black net fence specifically designed to discreetly disappear into the landscape while keeping the deer out. Rupnik installed the fence himself, a relatively easy project that took about three days to complete. He began the fence at the water’s edge. foot rebar through the net mesh before hammering it about 2 1/2 feet into the ground. Once the rebar was firmly rooted in the ground, he threaded 1/2-inch diameter PVC utility tubes over the rebar and made sure the 7 1/2-foot net came all the way down to the ground. The process continued, with the rebar spaced at 10foot intervals. Wherever there was a tree, he tied the net to the trunk, thus avoiding the need to use rebar. To block access from the driveway, he has a length of the net fence that he attaches to a tree with large plant hooks so it can be unhooked and opened when anyone needs to drive in or out. Eventually Rupnik plans to install a gate, which will cost more than the entire net fence installation. Once the fence was up, he watched to see how the deer, which are creatures of habit, would react to having their trail blocked. Occasionally deer did get in. Their ingress varied. Sometimes the driveway gate had not been properly closed; sometimes a fawn would creep underneath and the does would follow; sometimes rabbits gnawed

The white-tail deer population has made a dramatic rebound in the past century. Around 1900, deer hunting for food and hides brought Virginia’s deer population almost to the point of extinction. However, as the deer population has grown in the commonwealth, so has the human population and the number of homes in what were once rural regions.
Tips for successful deer fencing • Enclose the entire area. Deer will find a way around partial fences. • Measure the planned fence line length to determine how much material is needed. Fence netting can be purchased in 330- and 100-foot sections. • Pull the fence tight between support posts and trees. Deer leap over any stretch that sags. • If additional support is needed, weave a tension wire along the top and bottom of the fence, securing it to the supports. • Tack the fence bottom to the soil with garden staples every few feet to keep deer and rabbits from crawling underneath. • Consider using a double layer of fencing as reinforcement where frequently traveled paths exist.

through the plastic netting to gain access and the deer would squeeze in, too, and sometimes they went around the fence at the water’s edge. One time, Rupnik startled three deer that had found their way inside. They ran off in a panic and entangled themselves in the net, ultimately ripping it as they broke free. Through a process of trial and error, Rupnik learned that he must be vigilant about making sure there are no breaches in the fence. He mends any tears or places where the rabbits have eaten holes, with zip ties. He learned that the deer are uncomfortable walking over more than a few feet of rip-rap, and created a “T” fence running perpendicular to the main fence about 7 feet to each side along the water. The deer are daunted; that ingress has been effectively sealed. To keep fawns from crawling underneath, he has clamped the fence to the ground with sod staples. Over time there have been fewer and fewer breaches. “Deer are smart — and incorrigible. The whole objective,” Rupnik explained, “is to change their migration and feeding patterns.”

The Coryells’ Civil War letters were written from the field and contain descriptions of battles, marches and camp conditions, and news of friends.
ed and Susan Coryell almost threw away the little cardboard box. It was just an old greeting card box, tattered and worn, tucked away in a drawer at Ned’s mother’s house. But on the box, in faded pencil, were the words “Old Letters.” Ned recognized his mother’s handwriting and opened the box. In it he found a family treasure. The box contained 12 neatly folded letters, written during the Civil War by Ned’s great-great-grandfather, Joseph Franklin Stover, and Stover’s brother, John William Stover, both Confederate soldiers. Most of the letters were written from the field to family members in Page County and contain descriptions of battles, marches and camp conditions, and news of friends. The box also contained an 1863 letter from a Washington College student to his cousin, who may have been a member of the Stover family, and Joseph Stover’s disability discharge. The letters amazed them. “When I opened this box and read a letter for the first time, it was like it had been written three days ago,” Ned Coryell said. Susan Coryell agreed. “What got us was how immediate the writing is. You are just there. There is one in which two men froze to death. They didn’t have blankets. They didn’t have coats,” she said. Joseph Stover, who wrote nine of the letters, joined the 33rd Virginia Infantry, part of the Stonewall Brigade, SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

“[A] great many of our poor fellows have suffered severely from cold and hunger. Two poor fellows froze to death on the Potomac whiles we were there,” one letter said. in 1861 and was seriously wounded in 1862. John Stover, the writer of three of the letters, was a member of Turner Ashby’s 7th Virginia Cavalry. Although Ned Coryell knew that his great-greatgrandfather had been wounded in the Civil War and had suffered from the wound the rest of his life, he did not know the letters existed until his mother died. The Coryells, Fairfax County natives who now live in Huddleston, were clearing out her house when they discovered the letters. “You can almost follow the path of the war” through the letters, Susan Coryell said. On Aug. 25, 1861, Joseph Stover wrote from Camp Harman, east of Centreville, to his sister, Annie, describing a march to Fairfax Courthouse to fight Union troops. The battle did not take place,

and the 33rd Virginia returned to Camp Harman, having marched 12 miles. “So we had our tramp for nothing,” Joseph Stover wrote. “I can not finish letter as we have just now order to march. All is hurry now again. Goodbye to all. I may never see you again but hope for the best.” Returning from that march after only 2 miles, Joseph Stover added to the letter, asking his sister to send him a coat at the first opportunity as nights were cool. Stover wrote to Annie again Sept. 4, saying he sat writing in his tent with his knapsack on his knees after returning from drill. “[W]hilest we were out we hear the ‘war dogs howling’ (as we call them) down in the direction of Alexandria,” he wrote. On Nov. 1, Joseph Stover wrote to his brother, John, telling him he was pleased with the way John was conducting business at the family farm near Luray. “I also think it a good plan to hold onto the hogs until you can get a good price for them (say some seven or eight cents per lb gross),” he suggested. Within days, things were beginning to heat up for the 33rd Virginia. Later in November, Joseph Stover wrote to Annie again: “I did not get to see any of the Yankees, although we were pretty close to them. Could hear their Drums quite plainly and see their Balloon ascend every day. ... [It] went up to an enormous height & appeared when in the midst of a cloud like a blazing star.” The regiment had just received orders to pack up and move, Stover told his sister. On Nov. 17 he wrote to brother John Stover that the regiment was encamped at Kernstown, and the weather was cold: “The woods here belongs to a widow Lady who has been so stingy with her wood that she would suffer from cold. & now the soldiers are slaying it at the rate of about fifty loads per day,” he wrote. On Jan. 8, 1862, in the midst of the Romney campaign, Joseph Stover wrote to his younger brother, David, praising his handwriting and describing the strenuous marching his unit was enduring. “Our brigade commanded by Gen. Garnett left camp Stephenson near Winchester at an early hour New Year’s morning & marched about 18 miles in a north westerly direction & camped for the first night,” he wrote. Days of marching and skirmishing in freezing weather followed. “[A] great many of our poor fellows have suffered severely from cold and hunger. Two poor fellows

froze to death on the Potomac whiles we were there,” he wrote. It was impossible to get the supply wagons to the camps, because of bad roads, he wrote, comparing their situation to the hardships of the American Revolution: “We can now begin to realize the sufferings of the revolutionary soldier. But I suppose we are better clad than they were.” The people living in the area through which they are marching, about 20 miles west of Martinsburg, are mostly Union sympathizers, he wrote, and so their cattle and winter stores are being confiscated to feed the Confederates. “I have seen more of the horrors of war in the last week than I saw in the six months before. Families eaten out of house & home & left in a pitiful condition,” Joseph Stover told his brother. On March 23, 1862, he was wounded at Kernstown, sustaining a wound to his thigh that never healed properly and caused him to limp for the remaining 39 years of his life. Although Joseph Stover had hoped to hire a substitute for his brother John, in case he was drafted into the army, John joined the 7th Virginia Cavalry. John wrote to Joseph from camp in Greenbrier County near Lewisburg: “I guess we have travelled a thousand miles. . . We burned the bridges from Oakland to Cairo on the Baltimore and Ohio railrode. We destroyed a fine iron bridge at Fairmount which cost several hundred thousand dollars. . . I am still riding Billey, although he is tired and his back is soar.” John survived the war, as did David Stover, who also joined the 7th Virginia Cavalry. Though the letters describe events in Ned Coryell’s family, they hit home with Susan Coryell as well.
When they found the letters, she was halfway through the writing of her second Southern Gothic mystery, “Beneath the Stones,” a sequel to “A Red, Red Rose.” Both books are set at fictional Moore Mountain Lake and involve a Southwest Virginia family with ties to the Civil War. She was surprised to realize how well the letters fit into the plot she had constructed for “Beneath the Stones.” She had already used a Stover family home in Page County — a German “Flurkuechenhaus” with a vaulted cellar — as the basis for a setting in the novel. Characters in the book find that their lives are affected by the actions of ancestors, two cousins who served in the Civil War. The letters helped flesh out the characters of the Civil War soldiers in the book, Susan Coryell said. She used excerpts from Joseph Stover’s letters as parts of fictional letters, including one in which a soldier expresses his homesickness to his sister: “It is now night & I am setting in my tent with my knapsack on my knees writing. Our Fifer is passing away the tedious hours by playing on his flute. The soft music flows gently with mournful cadences upon the evening breeze which reminds me of my much loved home & the loved ones I left there.” The Stover letters helped to cement one of the book’s major themes, Susan Coryell said. “We understand ourselves better when we know where we came from and what happened in the past,” she said. “There are layers of history that make us what we are. And to think we almost tossed [the letters] out.”
The Coryells’ Civil War letters were found in this box, which was nearly tossed in the trash during a move. The letters were writte by ancestors Joseph Franklin Stover and John William Stover. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

The Virginia Tourism Corporation has redrawn its regions, giving a better presence to Smith Mountain Lake.

Virginia Mountains is a newly added region to the Virginia Tourism Corporation’s map.

HC SVNT DRACONES - Here Be Dragons Legend has it that ancient map makers inscribed the words “here be dragons” along the edge of their maps to denote the ends of the known world. Until recently, the Smith Mountain Lake region found itself relegated to this netherworld of unknown exploration, lying outside the charted boundaries of southern Virginia. However, a big change has finally occurred: starting in 2016, SML will no longer be a void just
beyond the outlines of the Virginia tourism maps. To many, this may seem to be of little note. However, for those who worked tirelessly for more than a decade, they know wholeheartedly the significance of Smith Mountain Lake, finally, being on the map . “My job is about tourism, and tourism is about the lake,” said Vicki Gardner, executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce. But how could Gardner do her job if the tourism maps were incorrect? SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

The flow of the Roanoke River along Smith Mountain was eyed as a potential dam location four decades before construction actually began. Work was underway in the early 1960s, and the resulting lake reached full pond at 5:03 a.m. March 7, 1966.
THE ROANOKE TIMES fILE
Smith mountain Lake — the beginning
As early as the 1920s, proposals were developed to plan for and create a hydroelectric dam across the Smith Mountain Gorge that intersects the Roanoke River. However, another 40 years would pass before Appalachian Power Co. would begin the Smith Mountain Pump Storage Hydroelectric Project in earnest in 1960. For more than three years a small army of workers cleared “hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of mountainside and poured about 175,000 cubic yards of concrete,” according to Appalachian’s website. Finally, in 1966, the resulting two lakes from the dam project, including Smith Mountain Lake, reached their normal “full” water levels. The birth of SML, the largest manmade lake in the western part of Virginia, created hundreds of miles of shoreline across three Virginia counties: Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania.
SmL aS a farming and houSing community
For much of the 1960s and ’70s the SML region remained a mostly agricultural area, with large swaths of farmland dedicated to growing tobacco and other crops. The SML dam churned out its hydroelectricity in a peaceful and rural environment where the population changed little. For example, Franklin County’s population in 1960 was 25,925, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and by 1970 had increased to only 26,858. Bedford County actually experienced a 14 percent decrease in its overall population during this same timeframe, and Pittsylvania County’s population remained about the same. However, all three counties experienced considerable growth in the 1980s as the SML area began its transition into the recreational area we know today. The area slowly evolved into upscale housing, condominiums, lake front homes and golf course communities. “When I first moved to the lake and started selling real estate in 1986,” noted SML Berkshire Hathaway real estate agent Jane Sullivan Horne, “most prospects were investors and people looking for second homes. A lot of real estate was sold off the hood of our cars with maps rolled out showing where new lot lines would eventually be.” Horne added that, “prices escalated quickly. Investors and buyers who originally came looking for second homes fell in love with the lake lifestyle and decided to make this their permanent home.” This growth steadily continued as SML evolved into a tourism hub. SML aS a touriSM deStination
The SML of present is certainly different from the landscape of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. Today, the lake has transitioned into a robust tourist destination. Each year event calendars are filled with fishing tournaments and chili cook-offs, pirate days and wine festivals, home tours and Christmas boat parades (for a full list of SML events, see smithmountainlake.com/ calendar). SML’s unique combination of access to water sports, boating, hiking and fishing has encouraged the birth of local vineyards and wineries, breweries, artisan coops and entertainment venues such as the Harvester in Rocky Mount. The dam itself has become a tourist attraction, which includes a visitor center and tours. However, SML has been plagued by a unique dilemma: It’s been misrepresented on Virginia’s most prominent tourism maps.

This far-reaching and popular catchphrase, in use since 1969, is branded by the Virginia Tourism Corporation (though the slogan itself is now considered to be in the public domain). Virginia can thank this creative organization for working diligently to improve the commonwealth’s economy by specifically promoting Virginia as a tourist destination. Annual travel guides, brochures and maps (which are available online and in print) produced by the Virginia Tourism Corporation highlight scenic drives, resorts, golf course, historic civil war excursions, water adventures and much more. When Gardner became executive director of the SML chamber in 2002, she realized quickly that her small agency budget could get a big boost by highlighting the lake in the materials developed annually by the tourism corporation. Imagine Gardner’s dismay when she discovered that a mapping problem was literally making SML disappear. “Smith Mountain Lake has over 500 miles of shoreline that encompasses Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania counties,” explained Gardner. “Way back in 1967 when the regions of Virginia were first designated, SML was just newly formed,” she said. “The Virginia Tourism [Corporation] bisected the lake into several map regions. Of particular note was that Hales Ford Bridge, near Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta, Virginia, and which crosses the lake, was used as a natural separation

for what VTC called the Central Virginia region and the Blue Ridge Highlands region. This caused SML to look more like two long or narrow bodies of water on the edges of two regions, instead of a lake overlapping three counties.” Gardner quickly surmised that the tourism maps would need to be redesigned. If she was going to achieve any success at the chamber, with its mission to promote tourism and business growth for its members and the community, SML in its entirety would need to be highlighted as the recreational jewel of the commonwealth. “Every $1 spent on efforts to promote tourism results in $5 return on investment,” she said. “For financial reasons alone we needed to be able to promote the lake as a tourist destination.” However, Gardner soon realized that changing map boundaries and designated regions would be no small nor easy task. “We were going to have to go to every direct marketing organization in the affected area and get them to sign off on any mapping redesigns,” Gardner said. “The time and effort involved to do something of that magnitude was daunting. And we’re a small chamber with a limited budget.” Gardner remained persistent, but made little headway for the next several years.
The soluTion
In 2010 Gardner was delivered a champion by
way of the new president of the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, Landon Howard. Gardner joined forces with Howard, who agreed that the tourism maps needed to be changed. “Landon [Howard] understood the value of promoting this beautiful lake,” noted Gardner. “The lake is just 30 minutes from Roanoke, which makes it a tremendous selling point for tourism in the area .” Through persistence, hard work and support and dedicated staffing from Howard, in combination with the cultivation of a positive working relationship with the Virginia Tourism Corporation, Gardner’s dream is about to become reality. This month, new tourism maps, to be published and distributed by the Virginia Tourism Corporation, will illustrate one new big region titled “Virginia Mountains Region” and include almost all of the Smith Mountain Lake area. “This is a vast improvement for promoting our region and will better shape our marketing direction,” Jerry Craig, director of tourism for Bedford, said when the change was announced. “We now have a group that we can market collectively,” Gardner said with a clearly proud tone in her voice. “Our common history, combined with our recreational assets, our rural charms and our growing metropolitan Roanoke area, allows us to offer tourism attractions across a broad base. From clay to a masterpiece, I’m so proud that we’ll be known as the Virginia Mountains Region starting in 2016 .” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

icki Gardner has served as the executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce since 2002. Known by many as the “Face of the Community,” Gardner is one of SML’s most enthusiastic cheerleaders. In addition to working to see the changes in the tourism mapping come to fruition, Gardner has spearheaded tourism and economic growth for more than a decade and has championed the success of events such as the annual SML Wine Festival (which celebrated its 27th year in 2015), an annual SML Chili and Craft Festival, the SML Business Expo each spring (followed immediately by Rockin Brews & BBQs, which takes advantage of the tents already erected for the Expo event), and an awards gala each January. When asked what the next 50 years will bring to Smith Mountain Lake, Gardner responded with a resounding, “We need a community center.” Gardner noted that SML continues to progress into a year-round community. As the infrastructure has evolved — schools, roads, medical centers, etc. — Gardner sees a tremendous unmet need in there being no substantial central meeting place that can serve more than 200 people. “We need a large facility to meet our ever-increasing demands. We need to be able to accommodate events such as trade shows, performances, legislative forums, retreats, conferences — the potential
Vicki Gardner, executive director of the SML chamber, has used last summer’s shooting as a motivator to get Vicki’s Vision completed.
is limitless,” Gardner stressed. “Smith Mountain Lake can become a meeting planner’s paradise, but we need a community center in order to make that leap. We need to no longer be a community of nomads.” Gardner envisions that the community center will also house the chamber, be a venue for adult education and be of adequate size to house annual events such as the Business Expo and arts events such as those sponsored regularly by the Smith Mountain Arts Council. Gardner, who was the victim of, but survived and is recovering
from, a violent shooting in 2015, is using the tragedy toward a positive solution in the creation of Vicki’s Vision. The outpouring of support and contributions that ensued after Gardner’s near fatal shooting is being channeled into efforts to bring the proposed SML community center into focus. In 2016, to coincide with the celebration of SML’s 50th anniversary, a planning committee will organize a fullscale approach to make the community center a reality. ven if he’s met a couple only weeks or months before their wedding, Chad Simmons admits that he’s cried at a few ceremonies. As the owner of Spring Valley Farm, Simmons and the white horse-drawn carriage he drives get to be a unique accent to a wedding — together, they channel a vintage romanticism that is right at home on the five-decade-old Smith Mountain Lake. “I love it. It’s fun to be a part of these couples getting married,” said Simmons, whose 500-acre family farm is in the Diamond Hill area of Bedford County. Spring Valley carriages have pulled Santa Claus in the Bedford Christmas Parade, revelers at Roanoke’s Dickens of a Christmas, young children at the Scott’s Strawberry Festival and fathers and daughters at a celebration event at the Taubman Museum of Art. Until about 15 years ago, Spring Valley had done only a handful of weddings using a horsedrawn carriage. The farm then purchased a white carriage from the Lexington Horse Center, and weddings became a more regular event. Simmons and his fiancee, Michelle Rose, said they do 10 to 12

weddings a year. “It’s really nice because that’s a person’s big day,” Rose said. “They’re going to remember that forever. It is really special.” Spring Valley takes part in weddings that cover a variety of styles. Country weddings, complete with cowboy boots and an on-farm venue, are one part of the business; high-style weddings at locations such as The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center make up the other part. For either type, the horses and the wedding carriage are often decorated with flowers, while the animals’ manes are braided. For his part, Simmons’ wardrobe can vary greatly to best reflect the wedding theme. Most of the weddings that Spring Valley Farm takes part in are within two hours of the farm — an area that includes all of the lake. Simmons has been around the farm his whole life, and his parents have deep ties to the agricultural community, too. His expertise is reflected in the temperament of the horses and how well he drives the carriage. “I was training other people’s ponies since I was 6 years old, and my dad was training horses since he was about 6 as well,” Simmons said. Simmons and Rose have about 100 horses on the

farm and conduct trail rides, birthday parties and other events there. During the summers, they are busy setting up shop at festivals in the region. That exposure, combined with the fact that Simmons’ brother hosts auctions at his adjoining property, means Spring Valley is able to get a lot of word-ofmouth business. Rose, who began working at the farm in summer of 2014, promotes the company on Facebook and through local publications. The farm has also recently updated its business card and printed brochures. Rose also handles much of the scheduling and management around the farm. At times, guests at a wedding will book the white carriage on the spot. “Sometimes when you ride by, the wagon’s so pretty and the horses are so pretty, people’s mouths drop open and they’re staring,” Simmons said. The two horses that Spring Valley uses most often during weddings are named Pixie and Comanche. “Our horses have done really well during the weddings,” Simmons said. “And when you finish it, and the horses are happy and the bride and groom are happy, that’s when you really feel good.” Simmons and Rose can relate to those whose weddings they are a part of — the couple got engaged in November. Rose said she enjoys asking couples how they proposed. “I eat it up because I’m a romantic,” she said. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

ldercare expert Barbara McVicker implores families not to delay discussing plans for the care of elderly parents: “It’s never too soon; it can only be too late.” She knows that because she has first-hand experience. The Union Hall homeowner was working fulltime for a nonprofit and raising two kids when she was called upon to be the primary caregiver for her parents, a role she filled for about 15 years. “In the middle of doing that, I met so many other adult children taking care of their parents, and in hearing their stories, I thought that their stories needed to be told,” McVicker said. McVicker had the means to make it happen. She has done nonprofit fundraising in the past and had experience with research and public speaking. Her goal was to help people navigate the uncertain waters ahead. The result was a book titled “Stuck in the Middle: Shared Stories and Tips on Caring for Mom and Dad,” which included nine caregiving
stories, with notes at the end of each one to help people with the knowledge and resources they need. Almost by coincidence, she said, she found herself on the forefront of the caregiving discussion. McVicker viewed this work more as a ministry than as a profit-making machine. It wasn’t long before her speaking engagements took off and became her primary focus. “I love speaking in front of caregivers because they are so thankful for any kind of lifeline that you provide,” she said. She then wrote another book, “Before Things Fall Apart: Preparing to Care for Mom and Dad,” as well as a workbook. Then came her PBS special a couple of years ago. “One of the big things I talk about is how it affects families, not only the primary caregiver. It becomes a family situation,” McVicker said. “The rub that we haven’t figured out is: Mom and Dad want autonomy; they want to stay independent. … And the adult child, out of safety and love,

Daimones By Massimo Marino Imagine waking up one morning to find you and your family members are the only humans left on earth — or at least you think you are. That’s the premise of this intriguing novel, which explores the mechanics of everyday post-apocalyptic survival, as well as a variety of emotional, moral and ethical issues. While sci-fi is not my usual genre, I found “Daimones” thought-provoking and emotional and look forward to reading the next two books in the trilogy. — Andie Gibson

Bettyville: A Memoir By George Hodgman Many of us have cared for elderly parents — many of us still do. There is no one who does it with so much insight, honesty and aplomb as Hodgman. This is a funny memoir from a middle-aged former New Yorker caring for his mother, Betty, a strong-willed woman stuggling against the breakdown of her mind and body. An elder-care book that focuses on goodness and hope in spite of the caregiver’s insecurities and dark nights of the soul. A droll comedy. — Linda Kay Simmons

thinks Mom and Dad should have in-home care coming in or that they should move. This becomes a huge struggle, not just between generations but between siblings as well.” Adding to the challenge is that adult children are often spread out, couples may both be in the workforce, caregivers may not have any medical training and caregiving is becoming a duty that lasts years upon years. “You could be taking care of your parents as long as you had taken care of your kids,” she said. The problem for many families, McVicker said, is that the conversation often never gets going until there’s a crisis. By that point, no one is on the same page. “We need to have those conversations much sooner,” she said.

A Walk in the Woods By Bill Bryson On the heels of the film adaptation, it’s time to revisit the wit and wonder contained in this travel classic — or, if you’ve never read it before, to experience it for the first time. The journey of author Bill Bryson and his pseudonymed hiking partner Stephen Katz from Georgia northward along the Appalachian Trail is a humorous one — deciding on gear, meeting a cast of unique characters and pushing themselves to their physical limits, clumsily at times. On top of that, they’re forced into a long-term situation of mutual reliance amid personality clashes. The pair, both much closer to retirement age than to college age, find that they’re struggling to navigate life just as much as they’re trying to navigate the trail itself. — Ryan Tipps

here are phrases that, when uttered aloud, almost always get me into trouble: “That doesn’t smell right.” “Sure, why not? Make it a double.” “I dare you.” It’s this last pronouncement, spoken by Hubs, which resulted in our standing naked and wet on the dock, in the dark, holding our breath. Allow me to explain. On a late Saturday evening, like most Saturday evenings, Hubs and I found ourselves snuggled on the couch in our lake house living room, watching the news, struggling to stay awake to watch the “Saturday Night Live” monologue. It’s not that romance is dead, it’s just that, at our age, romance needs to happen before 9 p.m. A full moon bathed the backyard in a lovely glow, bright enough that we could look through the back windows and see the flag fluttering in a slight breeze. “Geez, we’re old,” I said sleepily. “It’s just past 11 p.m. and we can barely keep our eyes open.” “Well,” pondered Hubs, “look how pretty it is outside. Let’s grab a drink and go down to the dock.” “In the dark?” “Why not?” “Hmm … OK, why not?” Cocktails in hand, we padded down the back stairs and across the lawn. We plunked down on the floating dock and playfully dangled our feet over the edge and into the surprisingly warm water. “See, isn’t this nice?” Hubs asked as he draped his arm around my shoulders, sipped his drink, and splashed his toes back and forth across the top of the water. “Yeah, look at us! Aren’t we just a pair of badass fifty-somethings?” “Well, if we were real badasses, we’d be skinnydipping right now. Just sayin’.” “Oh, you daring me?” Hubs cocked his eyebrow and replied, “I. Double-Dog. Dare. You.” What is it about the Irish? Why is every dare a personal

assault on our life’s being? I stood up, stripped off my clothes, and without hesitation slipped over the dock’s edge and into the lake. “OK big boy, you’re next.” “Don’t have to tell me twice!” As we friskily splashed around in the cove, a noisy rustling sound emerged from the woods to our right. “What the heck was that?!” I whispered. “Do you think someone has been watching us?!” We scrambled back onto the dock [that must have been a fun sight!] and grabbed our clothes. Damn, towels would have been a good idea! The noise grew louder, as if someone, or something, was indeed crashing through the woods and heading straight for us. “Whoa, that sounds big. Don’t move,” instructed Hubs. “Don’t move, are you nuts? I’m naked here!” “Don’t. Move.” Out of the woods emerged a massive creature, black, furry, and the size of a large truck tire. In the moonlight we could see the telltale sign of the white streak along and down the monster’s back and tail. “Oh, $^&#,” I whispered. “That is the largest friggin skunk I’ve ever seen!” “Shhh! Seriously, don’t move. If we spook him we’re going to get sprayed!” Skunkzilla lumbered across the back lawn, coming within a few feet of the dock. At his closest he lifted his head and seemed to look directly at us. I imagined him thinking: Aren’t y’alls a little old for this? Get a room! Pepe Le Pew then turned and ambled away, back into the woods on the other side of our property. He saved his spray for a more worthy opponent. Wishing everyone out there, young or old, a romantic and skunk-free Valentine’s Day. You’ll probably find us on the couch — where it’s safe. At least we’ll smell good.
