Bountiful Botetourt

Two and a half centuries of history, community, and continued growth!
Perhaps no area in the Roanoke Valley has seen more growth and development in the last decade than Botetourt County. Sitting at just over 33,000 residents, the county encompasses 541 square miles with Interstate 81 virtually cutting it in half. Next year will mark 250 years of existence for a jurisdiction that in its early days extended all the way to the Mississippi River. Two and a half centuries later, the county certainly isn’t as large, but continues to develop new ways to attract visitors and citizens alike. There is no more evidence of this than the Daleville Town Center. Over the course of

the last ten or so years, this ever-evolving hub on route 220, about a mile off the newly revamped exit 150, has turned in an epicenter for the county. With several restaurants such as Rodeo Chico, Tizzone and Tap House, evenings and weekends make it a popular gathering spot. Businesses such as Bank of Botetourt, Wells Fargo and Lewis Gale Regional Health also make it a robust area for industry and commerce.
Owner and CEO Karen Waldron, who is one of the spearheads of Daleville Town Center. Waldron had a vision of this area a number of years ago, and remained persistent even in the economic downturn of 2008. A decade later, she is proud of what the area has turned into.

to have a community gathering place,” continued Waldron, who relocated her own company headquarters from southwest Roanoke County several years ago. “The people who work for me have totally embraced the lifestyle down there. They love getting the chance to walk around the community and check out the restaurants.”

One of the highlights of the journey was the connection the Y immediately established with the Botetourt community. “There’s an overwhelming sense of pride,” said Johnson, who said financial commitments for the new facility started
as early as summer 2013. This showed the desire of the county to bring a new wellness area in. “Normally it takes time to build that. But Botetourt has been so poised to grow, so that just happened…people are really happy.” Some of the other aspects Johnson has been pleased with in the first six months include the amount of families that have joined, the amount of non-members that have visited, the buy-in and partnerships of local schools and the willingness of citizens to drive from other parts of the county to be a part of what his organization is doing.
“...Botetourt has been so poised to grow,...” “It is a spread out community and there’s not that core that live within a 12 minute drive,” said Johnson. “It had to be something that was going to draw people from a little more distance.”
That risk has paid off. Johnson said he has members from as far away as Eagle Rock, and has gotten feedback from citizens of other county zip codes such as Blue Ridge and Buchanan. That spread out community certainly had its advantages as well, especially in the warm weather months we are experiencing now. The new urban-esque vibe of Daleville is quite the contrast from the serene quiet feelings of floating on the James River about 17 miles away on the eastern side of Botetourt County. John Mays co-owns and operates Twin River Outfitters in Buchanan with his brother Dan, where visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, inner tubes and rafts for either an action-packed, or maybe lazier day, along the James River. This has quickly become a summer hot spot for both locals and visitors…until they cool off in the water anyway. - continued on page 6

original destination after cruising the river to maximize safety and ensure a good time. The recreational options of Botetourt aren’t just limited to the water. Hiking options are available for all ages at Roaring Run in Eagle Rock, an intermediate trail geared for those of all ages, while Tinker Cliffs and Apple Orchard Falls provide more of a challenge for the more experienced hiker. The Botetourt Sports Complex opened as a state of the art athletic facility in 2007 and was the named Complex of the Year by the Amateur Softball Association in 2012. In addition to hosting tournaments and county recreation events, the park has walking trails and a playground. Finally, Fincastle’s Camp Eagle has been a community mainstay for over 30 years, offering their campus for summer camps, retreats and specialized group events.

And as summer will turn into fall, Layman Family Farms in Blue Ridge has turned into one of the most thought of autumn destinations with their well-known corn maze, hayrides and pumpkin patch. And if all of that recreation proves to be too much, or if general relaxation is on the agenda, Ballast Point Brewery has quickly become one of the most popular hangout spots not only in Botetourt, but all of southwest Virginia since its 2017 opening in Daleville. Its picturesque views of the valley from Greenfield Industrial Park is a wonderful snapshot of the area, both literally and figuratively, completing the vision Waldron had for the area before it existed. “The beauty blows my mind,” said Waldron. “It’s become a wonderful location that people want to enjoy…I say let’s just keep going.”

4 Common Homeowner Mistakes Four things homeowners should never do to their homes.
No matter what type of home you have, following these 4 suggestions could ensure that it maintains its resale value for years to come.
[1] Remove your only bathtub If resale value is important to you, don’t get rid of your only bathtub no matter how dreamy that walk-in shower looks. It will make it harder to sell when the time comes. You’ll flat-out lose buyers who love a good soak or need a tub to bathe little ones (both human and four-legged.)

[2] Cover wallpaper with water-based paint You don’t have to remove that dated wallpaper – simply paint over it. Just don’t do it with water-based paint. It can reactivate wallpaper glue and cause the paper to peel. Instead, use oil-based primer, let it dry completely and then apply paint over it.
[3] Paint exterior brick Bricks need to breathe. Paint chokes it. Paint can destroy the brick and mortar and even cause the foundation to crumble. If you’re itching for a new exterior look, try new shutters, paint the front door or update your landscaping. If you just can’t live with
your brick color, try brick stain, which bonds with the brick allowing it to breathe.
[4] Plant trees close to your home That young sapling just a few feet from your door seems so harmless. Until it grows up. In addition to the risk of falling limbs, tree roots from mature trees can weaken your home’s foundation and clog plumbing and sewer pipes. Plant medium and large trees at least 30 to 50 feet from the house. Summer Maintenance Checklist! Four important maintenance jobs southern homeowners should complete for summer to prevent costly repairs and keep their homes in top condition.
These four simple check-ups could help you avoid costly repairs later in the season.
Check to see if the gutters have pulled away from the house, and for bent spots
[1] Check your drainage
[2] Look for rotting wood along the eaves
Spring and summer rains, often heavy in the South, provide an opportunity to peek outside and see where water runs along your property. If you have areas of standing water, you need to plan for corrective action, such as re-grading, building landscaping features or installing a French drain (a shallow trench often filled with gravel that’s designed to redirect water). These rains also can help you locate blockages in your gutters. Look for overflow from the gutters and weak or non-existent flow from the downspouts that indicate a blockage.

Check your roof overhang -- also called the eaves -- for dripping water and peeling paint that may indicate roof leaks and rot. If you see signs of trouble, consult a home inspector or roofing contractor.
[3] Check for roof damage Inspecting your roof is especially important if your house falls under the drip line of a large
tree or if you’ve had a recent hailstorm. If your roof is difficult to navigate, stay on the ground and use a pair of binoculars. Look for loose, damaged or missing shingles, and be sure to check plumbing vents.
[3] Clean your siding In the humid South, algae growth and mildew frequently appear on siding. Clean your vinyl, brick, stucco or wood siding with mild soap and water, a brush and a garden hose with a spray nozzle.
