Life’s Good in Vinton -By Chad Parries

Pete Peters is the Assistant Town Manager and the Director of Economic Development for the Roanoke Valley suburb of Vinton. When asked how he described the town, the word that came to mind was intimate.

“There is a sense of belonging” He’s not kidding. The total area of Vinton is a not so overwhelming 3.17 square miles. But included in that are over 8,000

[4]

residents, a history that dates back over 130 years, and a revitalization that keeps the town evolving. And one distinct quality that sets it apart.

“There is a sense of belonging”, said Peters, who grew up in town and returned in 2015 to take on his current roles in local government. “For all of the people in town that are shopping, or attending church, or going to one of our events, it all overlaps. Everything comes together to make for a nice environment.”

One component to a great small-town atmosphere is tradition and the events Peters referred to. The springtime Dogwood Festival has taken place every spring for the last 65 years, complete with a carnival, parade, food, and vendors. The fall festival, Christmas parade, and Fourth of July fireworks are more annual congregations for those all around the valley.

“For all of the people in town that are shopping, or attending church, or going to one of our events, it all overlaps. Everything comes together to make for a nice environment.” “There is an incredible amount of pride in Vinton”, said Michael Wrye, a resident since 2012 who also has children that attend school in the area. “When you go to

the ballpark, or a recreational event, there is a very strong communal sense to it.”

“There is an incredible amount of pride in Vinton” As a citizen, Wrye noted the growing sense of identity in the downtown area and the growing number of businesses appearing in town. Peters says that’s something town representatives are very pleased about.

“The developments are fit to the needs of the people,” “The developments are fit to the needs of the people,” he said, noting the emergence of establishments like Twin Creek Brewery and the new Macado’s restaurant in the old library near the Vinton War Memorial. “All of that has created a new energy, but we are working on even more.”

HELLO VINTON!

Everyday activities and conveniences are being improved for a better lifestyle in Vinton from pedestrian crosswalks, road improvements and expanded parking downtown, even an easily navigable biking corridor that will complement a visually aesthetic area.

“All of that has created a new energy, but we are working on even more.” “We are nestled in the mist of the mountains,” said Wrye. “It’s a beautiful place… it’s nice to have immediate access to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Glade and Wolf Creek Greenways that go through the area. Having those things nearby make it nice to be right where you are.” - continued on page 6

“They are an extremely valuable partner to us. We couldn’t do it without them,” William Byrd Middle and High Schools represent the town, making up one of five high schools in Roanoke County, a jurisdiction that Peters says sets the table for Vinton to be so successful in many areas. “They are an extremely valuable partner to us. We couldn’t do it without them,” he said. The county has developed several libraries around the area in the last decade, including Vinton’s 23,000 square foot, state of the art facility that opened its doors in the fall of 2015. In addition, the town is in the final stages of turning the old William Byrd High School into over 80 apartments, a project Peters

anticipates being completed by the end of the year.

“We love the scenery… it’s the quietest place we’ve ever lived. They are trying to do things to spur growth as well as encourage community.” With a median home value of right around $100,000, the cost of living in Vinton is below the county, state, and national average without having to migrate to a more rural community. In fact, quite the opposite. Vinton is a ten minute drive from Downtown Roanoke, and is generally about a 40-45 minute drive to the Smith Mountain Lake area. The town also has several venues to host special events and weddings in the Vinton War Memorial and The Woodland Place.

“We love where we live,” said Wrye. “We love the scenery…it’s the quietest place we’ve ever lived. They are trying to do things to spur growth as well as encourage community.”

“It’s incredibly fun to be a part of these projects, and to see your work become a reality, especially thinking back on how it used to be growing up here. It’s definitely surreal to see all the progress.” Sports fans can even get a taste of athletics without leaving town as the Virginia Tech Men’s Ice Hockey team plays at the local Lancerlot Sports Complex, which offers ice skating to the public in addition to Lab Sports Performance, physical therapy options, and aquatics.

Finally, for anyone looking to support a local eatery, Vinton certainly does not lack family style dining. Whether it’s the widelyknown New York Pizza or Dogwood Restaurant, the town offers a plethora of options that also includes Asia Gourmet, Farm-

Peters says the town refers to itself as “The Last Mile.” However, from the looks of all that has happened and continues to in Vinton, it appears when it comes to evolving, there is no last in sight.

One of those families is Peters, who returned to his roots to help in the transformation.

Make Your Kitchen a Smart Kitchen [8]

As the heart of the home, the kitchen is often the busiest room of the house - a perfect space to install the latest smart home gadgets. With “smart sidekicks, you can solve kitchen challenges and simplify the overall cooking process.

Increase Cooking Efficiency Whether cooking for one or hosting an elaborate dinner party, smart kitchen solutions can lend a helpful hand in a busy kitchen. The faucet has evolved from a standard two-handle to a single handle that can be turned on and

off with a simple touch. This necessary kitchen assistant can streamline cooking tasks for seasoned chefs and novices alike. Today, Delta VoiceIQ Technology takes this to the next level dispensing exact measurements and filling custom containers like baby bottles, dog bowls or pasta pots, all with a simple voice command. To simplify everything from a quick breakfast on the go to a healthy family dinner, consider investing in devices like a smart oven and connected coffee maker to allow users to preheat and schedule brewing from a mobile device. - continued on page 10

Track Your Kitchen Inventory Intuitive devices can help you shop smarter and reduce food waste. Instead of sniffing out mold and sour scents, apps help track pantry inventory. Simply take pictures of your groceries and input expiration dates. When the next shopping trip comes around, have a list of what items need to be tossed and which foods should remain on the shelf. If looking to make a substantial kitchen update, consider

[10]

investing in a refrigerator that lets you view the inside of the fridge from your phone.

Avoid Cooking Messes When cooking with raw meat or messy ingredients, otherwise mindless tasks like opening the trash and turning on the faucet can become a challenge. Home cooks risk spreading the mess - and germs - in the cooking process. Consider upgrading your Touch2O Delta faucet with VoiceIQ Technology to pair with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to turn the water on and off. Not only do you contain

the mess, but you also practice cleanliness in the kitchen while keeping the faucet spotless. Voice-controlled trash cans are also handy investments, encouraging the rest of the family to join in on the cleaning process. Next time you’re in the kitchen, consider the latest “smart” advances that can solve your kitchen hitches.

Refresh Your Backto-School Routine

Each year as summer ends, teachers, parents and students alike all begin their backto-school preparations. Fall is a great time to start fresh, establish new and better routines, and to set family schedules that fit both your needs and the needs of your growing kids. Below are 3 tips to help get your family geared up for a successful school year.

Post A Calendar You may be using mostly digital calendars to keep track of your work and personal appointments, but having a physical, centrally

[12]

located calendar in your home is helpful to show what to expect on a daily basis. It will not only help keep everyone organized, but it also allows kids to add items. Find a visible area, like your refrigerator or kitchen wall, to post a large, easy-to-use calendar that uses erasable markers for easy edits. Then, show your kids how to post things like field trips, sports or band practice, appointments and even fun things like birthday parties and holidays. You can also make a spot to post the school-day schedule, too, so it’s clear when everyone needs to wake up, get dressed, do homework and all the important tools for a successful day.

September 27th, 2019 | The Roanoke Times

For very young children, use pictures to represent calendar items along with words for a great early literacy tool. Even if you’ve never used this type of calendar before, fall is the perfect time to start.

Schedule Chores Whether you use a “chore wheel” or just assign chores to each family member, if a chore schedule is clear and in writing, everyone is more likely to follow it. While chores can be assigned to anyone in the home, just remember to find age-appropriate tasks and make sure to demonstrate how to complete them correctly. Most kids are able to do some household chores at any age, even if it’s just tidying up their room, feeding a pet or helping out with laundry. While manual chores like washing dishes most immediately come to mind, having the right appliances to complete some tasks are essential. For example, LG Elec-

tronics offers front load washer models with TurboWash 360 Technology, which uses five powerful jets that help detergent penetrate deep into fabrics for a complete clean in under 30 minutes. This makes laundry a much easier task, especially if your kids have sports uniforms with grass and dirt stains that need to be cleaned quickly for the next day’s game or practice. These units are also compatible with the LG SideKick pedestal washer that can wash smaller loads at the same time or independently. For even more convenience, if you need to check on laundry or get it started while on the go, you can use the LG SmartThinQ mobile app to start up a load, check on laundry status or be notified when clothes are clean.

Plan the Night Before Set aside time right after dinner to plan

ahead for the next day. This may seem like a tough task to carve out time for, but it helps save time down the line. Have kids check for permission slips or other important school information, make lunches and set out the next day’s clean clothes before it’s too late to throw in an extra load if needed. Check for unfinished homework or upcoming projects that need a little more planning or supplies to get done. If you make this “next day check” into a daily routine, your kids will eventually start doing it without the need to prompt them. You’ve probably heard that kids need and appreciate structure in their day, but if it’s been tough to set up a routine before, don’t worry - each school year provides a new beginning, a fresh start to improve the way everyone gets through the day and takes care of what needs to be done. For appliances that can help make all your daily chores easier, check out lg.com.
