Reel ’Em In: Striper Fishing Striper fishing remains a popular pastime at Smith Mountain Lake for all ages. Anglers use a variety of methods, such as drifting live bait, trolling plugs and bucktail jigs or casting top water lures. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries limits lake catches to 2 per day in the aggregate. There is no length limit from June 1 to Oct. 31, though no striper between 30-40 inches may be caught from Nov. 1 to May 31.
