hile summer might winding down for some of us as kids are headed back to school in Franklin and Bedford counties, there’s still plenty to do around the lake as warm weather beckons us to get out on the water. Be sure to check out this issue’s final installment of our Summer By the Dozen to see what activities you can take advantage of in our area.

Shawn C. Garrett shawn.garrett@roanoke.com
We’ll also take you inside one of the eight homes on this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour and explore a newly renovated and redecorated marina on the upper arm of the Blackwater River side of the lake. Although not exactly the sexiest of subjects, retaining walls are quite necessary for some lake-area homeowners. In this issue, we’ll learn about the technology behind them and how they can withstand the test of time. Plus, our gardening columnist will have the latest tips on growing butterfly-friendly plants in your garden.

5
This month, Gerry and Yin Lewis (5) set the record with a trip to Singapore, a distance of about 9,785 miles from SML.
1. hawaii Sharon and Dennis Brown took the Laker with them on their trip to Oahu, Hawaii. They enjoyed a few weeks of “us time” while seeing all the different sights and great shopping. 2. Antigua Larry and Holly Kalp of The Waterfront spent a week in February at the Galley Bay Resort in Antigua.
6
3. panama canal Debby Hallgren took the March/April issue of Laker magazine on a trip to the Panama Canal. 4. washington state Jed, Erin, Hope and Will Verity of Hardy and Charlottesville spent spring break visiting Seattle and San Juan Island. The enjoyed watching whales and blue herons that reminded them of Smith Mountain Lake! 5. southeast asia Gerry and Yin Lewis traveled earlier this year to Hong Kong and then Singapore, where they boarded the ship Star Clipper. They spent a week sailing to locations in Malaysia and Thailand, which is where this photo was taken, with Similan Islands National Park in the background. 6. new zealand Vicki and Craig Spence took the March/April issue of the Laker with them when they traveled to Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown, New Zealand. 7. hawaii Janet and Bob Vogel of Moneta, and their children, Julie and Brad, enjoyed remembering SML vacations on a recent trip to Maui. They took the Laker with them to Hyatt Luau, which was especially enjoyed by their grandchildren.
7

VIEWS GALORE Mark and Lisa Cruise planned for a fixer-upper, but instead built the home of their dreams Story by Ferne hale Photography by JollyJen Photography

A
bout two years ago, if you had been cruising along the Roanoke River arm of the lake above Hales Ford Bridge, you would have noticed a big bite of red mud taken out of a hillside near channel marker R47. A construction project was getting underway. Before long, a large foundation appeared, followed by framing and then a roof. And although it seemed as if the work went on forever, it took only 18 months to get the impressive home completed. “Actually, there was a house on the property when we bought it, and our original idea was to just fix it up and expand it,” said Mark Cruise, who owns the property with his wife, Lisa. “But when we got into it, we found out that the plumbing needed to be upgraded, and the house needed to be re-wired, and it was more than we wanted to deal with. So Lisa and I said, ‘Let’s just tear it down and start over.’” By this time, the couple also had purchased the unoccupied lot next door, turning the property into a generous 1.8 acres with 500 feet of shoreline that would allow for an oversized three-slip dock suitable for entertaining. At the home’s front door, there is stonework and pillars typical of Craftsman style, which the Cruises refer to as “lodge-y.”

The home is four stories tall and encompasses 7,600 square feet. Upon entering, the lake view creates a wow factor, as does the two-sided stacked stone fireplace in the great room featured under a beamed ceiling that soars to 32 feet. To the right of the entryway is a formal dining room, painted teal with a lighter teal in the tray ceiling with white wainscoting to add brightness. An eye-catching chandelier hangs above the table. The unique color combination provides early testimony to Lisa Cruise’s great eye for decorating with panache. Serving as the only interior decorator, Lisa has blended antiques — for instance, the dresser in a guest bedroom — into the home’s modern style. Most of the walls in the home are painted a chic gray, a good backdrop for art that doesn’t compete with the home’s main focus: the lake. flows into an informal dining area. There’s a surprise in one kitchen cabinet next to the refrigerator: a dumbwaiter that travels to the bar downstairs. Just outside the great room is a covered deck with the other side of that eye-catching fireplace. “This is my spot; I just love this lake view,” Lisa said as she snuggled in a chair by the fireplace. A circular stairway links the upper and lower decks, both of which have stamped concrete flooring. The main level’s spacious master suite shares that phenomenal lake view with the great room. Two additional guest suites are on the main floor, each with its own bath. All the rooms on this level feature handscraped, engineered hardwood floors and soaring 10-foot ceilings. The upper level boasts a large loft area for games, plus two guest suites with a shared bathroom. Thinking toward the future, an area for an elevator has been roughed in and all the doorways are wide enough to be handicapped-accessible. On the lower level, a family room also has a stacked stone fireplace, a TV, a big round sofa, a pool table and a matching stacked-stone bar with a roughed-edge granite top. Behind a stone wall in the family room, near the bar, is a wine cellar

B
utterflies are creatures of infinite variety and beauty. But they’re not just a pretty feature in the garden. They are hard-working, flying insects that play a vital role in plant pollination, second only to bees. Environmentalists are concerned about a butterfly die-off due to the mass use of herbicides, particularly Roundup and other poisons, on farms and in gardens. These toxic chemicals kill plants that provide vital breeding and nectar sources for the butterflies. You can be part of the solution by growing plants that attract butterflies. Luckily for the home gardener, these plants entice humans, as well as pollinators, with their beautiful flowers. Here are five of the many outstanding plants that are “babe magnets” for butterflies, as well as a wealth of other beneficial pollinators, to your garden.
Nepeta (Catmint) commonly known as catmint, there are several species of Nepeta that are gorgeous in the garden, and they all attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Notice deer aren’t included in that list. The foliage releases a scent appealing to humans, but one that’s repugnant to deer. Those pesky grazers keep their distance. Many of the catmints are floppy plants, but newly
hybridized varieties are more compact, and “new and improved” ones are introduced each year. One such introduction is Nepeta ‘Cat’s Pajamas’, an evocative name that suggests the plant’s outstanding qualities. It grows just 12 inches to 14 inches tall with a 20-inch spread, and in season is covered in vibrant blue flowers with nary a visible leaf on the plant. An older tried-and-true introduction is Nepeta racemosa ‘Walker’s Low’, which grows to 2-feet-by-2-feet and produces 8-foot spikes of lavender-blue flowers. It was honored in 2007 as the perennial plant of the year, valued as one of the most hardy and reliable of all the nepetas. Don’t overlook the tall varieties. ‘Six Hills Giant’ is a prized example of the statuesque nepetas. It reaches up to 4 feet tall, spreads to 3 feet and produces lavenderblue flowers that cover the plant. Catmint has its first flush of flowers in early summer, and it will bloom sporadically throughout the growing season. Encourage a lush second bloom by deadheading or shearing the plants. Full sun will encourage a more floriferous display, although the plants will flower in partial shade. Virtually pest-free, if the leaves should happen to be attacked by a pest, cut back the plant, and it quickly will regrow.

Environmentalists are concerned about a butterfly die-off due to the mass use of herbicides, particularly Roundup and other poisons, on farms and in gardens. These toxic chemicals kill plants that provide vital breeding and nectar sources for the butterflies. Agastache (Anise hyssop) commonly known as anise hyssop and hummingbird mint, Agastache are showy, fragrant, long-blooming perennials. They are perfect for a pollinator-friendly garden and have excellent resistance to browsing deer and rabbits. Humans are drawn to the purple-lavender flowers, as well as new hybrids that bloom in pink, rose, blue, white and orange. Agastache performs best in drought conditions and does well even in low-nutrient soil. Expect a colorful floral display and pretty greenery for months. Butterflies are drawn to its nectar, and humans can enjoy the anise flavor of the leaves of A. foeniculum steeped in hot water to make a tea. Depending on the variety, the plants grow 2 feet to 6 feet tall and produce showy flowers until the first frost. The flowers may be 3 inches to 4 inches long and, like butterfly bush flowers, bloom from the top down. Also like the butterfly bush, it self-sows readily, so be prepared for it to spread on its own. Giant hyssop, A. rupensis, also known as the threadleaf giant hyssop or licorice mint, is an upright, clump-forming perennial that typically grows to 2 feet to 3 feet tall. Its salmon-orange flowers, with purplish calyxes that are tubular and sweetly fragrant, will delight you all ABOVE An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail enjoys a flowering mountainmint. More plants butterflies love Rudbeckia hirta (black-eyed Susan) This self-sowing plant produces daisy-like flowers (to 3 inches across) with bright yellow to orange-yellow rays and domed, dark chocolate-brown center disks. The species name, hirta, refers to the hairy leaves (think hirsute). Asclepias (milkweed) The leaves of the Asclepias species are the only food source for monarch butterfly larvae and other milkweed butterflies. Cultivating this plant supports the life cycle of the monarch butterfly, which is currently labeled as an endangered species. Sedum spectabile Showy sedum has pinky green stems that are thick and succulent. You and the butterflies will enjoy the late summer clusters (cymes) of star-shaped pink blossoms. Check out cultivars such as ‘Brilliant’, which has bright pink petals and darker pink anthers and carpels; ‘Carmen’, whose flowers are a darker mauve or rosepink; ‘Meteor’ with red flowers; ‘Iceberg’, with white flowers; and ‘Stardust’, which has silvery-pink flowers. Vernonia noveboracensis (ironweed) This Virginia native grows up to 6 feet tall
and produces vivid blue-purple flowers in late summer followed by pretty tawny seed heads. It marries well with Joe Pye weed, which also is loved by butterflies. Baptisia (wild indigo, false indigo) An herbaceous perennial, Baptisia typically grows 3 feet to 4 feet tall. It’s easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, although it does best in full sun. In spring, you and the butterflies will enjoy purple, lupine-like flowers in erect racemes (to 12 inches) atop flower spikes extending well above bluish-green foliage. New hybrid introductions offer yellow, purple and two-toned flowers. To maintain a rounded plant, trim or shear after it blooms. The tradeoff is you lose the attractive seed pods, which mature to an ornamental charcoal black. Zinnia Treat yourself to zinnias. The sunflowerstyled flowers come in a happy carnival array of colors that attract all sorts of pollinators. Generous bloomers, the more you harvest the flowers (they are excellent for cutting), the more they’ll grow, giving you a summerlong supply of garden and cut flower pleasure.
the botanical name is a mouthful that translates to densely flowered. Beginning in late June, early July when the plant is in bloom, you’ll see these densely flowered plants covered with a spectacular variety of butterflies, bees, wasps and moths. The plant can accommodate them all. Easier to pronounce is the common name, clustered mountainmint. A Virginia native, it spreads vigorously. Plant it in poor soil to contain it or in an area where you’re OK with it taking over great swaths of land. It grows 2 feet to 3 feet tall, and each stem produces round, button-like heads of tiny white flowers smudged with bright magenta. The flowers are set off by powdery, silvery, blue-green bracts that set them off nicely as a pretty frame. After the long bloom period, the flower heads dry to an eyecatching dark gray for late season interest. Grow mountainmint in part shade to full sun in moist, but well-drained, average soil. A member of the huge mint tribe, which encompasses at least 236 genera, when crushed, the foliage releases a strong mint scent, and indeed, you can use the leaves for cooking and herbal teas.
Salvia microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ from july to october, the eyecatching ‘Hot Lips’ sage attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators in droves with its two-toned lipstick red and white flowers backed by fine green foliage. As an added bonus, the foliage has a yummy black currant aroma when you crush it or brush past. The drought-tolerant, mounding herbaceous shrub grows 35 inches tall and 24 inches wide. ‘Hot Lips’ mixes well in the border

or sunny, naturalistic setting. If it gets too floppy, prune it in spring, and it will leap back into life. Rarely touched by deer, this plant is a great choice for poor soils. Introduced from Mexico, with a little protection from the cold, this shrub, which is hardy to USDA zone 6, will overwinter at the lake in all but our harshest winters. As a back-up, take cuttings in mid- to late summer. Once you’ve had this plant, you won’t want to be without it.
Echinacea purpurea (coneflower)
Pollinators love ‘Hot Lips’ sage, and you will too.
an east coast native, the botanical name Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos, meaning hedgehog or sea-urchin, in reference to the spiny center cone found on most flowers in the genus. Typically, the flowers are purple in the wild, but recent hybridizing has produced colors such as fire engine red and multiple shades of reds, pinks and oranges. Echinacea alba has a white flower. Coneflowers are adaptable plants that will happily grow in sun or light shade in either dry or moist soil. Although they prefer loamy or sandy, well-drained soils, they are not fussy about the soil’s pH.

oaters who enjoy admiring the shoreline of Smith Mountain Lake can’t help but notice many homes boast retaining walls. Homeowners use them to hold back steep banks, add visual interest to a landscape, terrace off a hillside to allow for plantings or create more practical lake access via steps, walking paths or cart paths. For more than 15 years, sightseers on Gills Creek across and upstream from Striper’s Landing may have noticed Billy and Deborah Martin’s two-tiered retaining wall, with circular iron stairs connecting the two levels, on the lakeside of a house that sits 40 feet higher than the shoreline. Their walls were a do-it-yourself project that Billy, a building contractor, (who, Deborah said, “is really good at figuring out how to do things”) designed and built. And despite the substantial height of 10 feet to 12 feet on each tier, those walls remain straight and true after all these years. “There were no county building codes for walls of even that height back then,” Billy recalled. “This was to be our forever house, and we wanted to be as close to the water as possible,” Deborah said. “That required lakefront walls, plus another 9-footer on the driveway side. Billy just got busy and built them.”

But he had some help. Young people were hired to help move and place rock, gravel and the five semi-truckloads of interlocking stone blocks. “It was hard work,” Billy said. “Rarely did a worker come back for a second day.” The Martins’ previous lakefront property, just one lot farther up the creek, was equally steep. Billy tamed that slope with a stockade-type wall of telephone poles that he acquired while working for the power company. It, too, remains straight and true to this day. Marshall Stone Architectural Stone Center, with locations in Rocky Mount and Greensboro, specializes in both natural and manufactured stone, plus supplies needed for wall and patio construction. General Manager Brian Ferguson said, “Segmental walls using decorative inter-

locking concrete blocks got popular in the late 1980s and are still going strong today — both new construction and people wanting to upgrade their outdoor living areas. We sell blocks, backfill stone and reinforcing materials to most of the qualified installers and are happy to connect homeowners who have a project in mind with someone who can build it right.” Five years ago, Dale Simmons of Simmons Excavating contracted for a 204-foot-long wall on his property in Boardview Estates. That wall climbs gradually to 13 feet in height at its upstream end. “Besides adequate drainage pipe and
stone, make sure your wall builder uses a layer of stabilizing mesh every two courses to hold the wall in place,” Simmons said. “Geo-Grid and other brands of fiberglass and plastic stabilizing mesh have replaced the former dead-man timbers that once were laid into banks to stabilize walls,” said Ronnie Mitchell of Ronnie Mitchell & Son Landscaping & Lawncare. Retaining walls 4 to 5 feet typically require county building permits. Walls 6 feet and taller must be professionallyengineered and laid with a 5/8-inch setback per course and be inspected during construction. “Rebuilding a wall that has failed can cost upwards of $60,000, so make sure the builder follows the engineering plan and does it right the first time,” Mitchell said. I have nine guys doing masonry every work day, but I could use 30 if I could find qualified, willing people.” Homeowners should do their homework when looking for builders. “Only about 10 percent of installers have been trained as stone masons and few have state licenses,” Wingfield said. “Buyers should verify qualifications, experience and insurance so they’ll have recourse if there’s a problem in the future.” Wilson and Petra Patterson moved into their home

in the Walnut Run community in 2017. The neighborhood features steep waterfront lots along the arm of the Roanoke River near channel marker R53. “Neighbors told us the bank between the house and the river was first planted with grass, but was too steep for mowing,” Wilson Patterson said. “The first owners replaced grass with mulch, but that had decayed to dirt and a few bushes by the time we bought it — not usable or attractive lakefront at all.” A plan for a 20-foot-by-30-foot stone patio, with a step down to a slightly smaller section that surrounds an in-ground concrete hot tub, was developed to satisfy the couple’s desire for an appealing outdoor living

and entertaining space. A landscaper they first contacted recommended Mitchell. The resulting wall, built earlier this year, is 110 feet long and rises to 14 feet above grade, with a couple more courses below ground. The wall uses about 850 interlocking cement blocks that weigh 70 pounds each, according to job foreman Matt Blocher. Every 2 to 3 courses, the wall has Geo-Grid anchoring mesh sandwiched between the blocks and running back into the back-fill gravel. “Hollow spaces in the blocks themselves also were filled with large gravel, except for the top two courses,” Blocher said. “They’re tied together with horizontal rebar plus poured concrete that anchors posts for glass railings.” While it was a costly project, Patterson said it was worth it. “It will add markedly to our outdoor living space, our enjoyment of the lakefront, and will cut the amount of topsoil that washes into the lake,” he said. “It’s an investment we’ll be enjoying just as soon as it’s done.”

oaters who live on or enjoy exploring the Blackwater River arm of the lake now have a new full-service marina that can meet both marine service and gastronomic needs. Magnum Point Marina opened its renovated facility in mid-May and has quickly become the go-to place along the upper Blackwater for gas and bait and tackle, as well as breakfast, lunch or dinner. Coowner John Mathena joined Fulton Jones, who established the original Magnum Point Marina in 1986 and operated it for 20 years before leasing it out in 2006, and Jones’ daughter, Lauren Carter, who has experience working in and managing the marina’s restaurant, to give the location a new lease on life. Mathena, a civil engineer by trade, was a Roanokebased regional project manager for a nationwide development company until a year ago. “I turned 50 last August and was having a bit of a mid-life crisis,” Mathena recalled. “I put my boat in at the then-Blackwater Marina ramp and saw their ‘For Sale’ sign. I had been dreaming of getting back into the boating business for years — my family was in that business on Bluestone Lake in West Virginia — and thought, ‘OK, maybe this is it.’ I pooled funds with Fulton and Lauren to buy out the previous operators. We closed the deal in January and immediately began a major rehab.”

Mathena designed, managed and helped with the renovation, which began with new docks by L&J Enterprises of Union Hall. The building itself was gutted; the kitchen expanded from 80 to 400 square feet — room for an 18-foot exhaust hood, brick pizza ovens, two griddles, a commercial four-burner stove, two ovens and several deep fryers. “A kitchen staff of four can work in there efficiently,” Mathena said. Restrooms have been remodeled; the building got new doors, windows and siding. A 1929 Old Town canoe, originally purchased by the city of Danville for Dan River clean-up duty, hangs over the bar. Mathena made hanging lights out of perforated minnow bucket liners (the outer buckets serve as tabletop beer buckets). Mathena’s daughter, Stephanie, suggested bass boat seats for bar stools, so Mathena crafted bases to make them usable. Some of Mathena’s father’s old outboards and other boating artifacts from Bluestone Lake also adorn the walls. Jones’ wife, Lynette, who operated La Trattoria in Union Hall for 12 years, agreed to come on as chef. “It is a vastly different place now,” said Carter, who managed the restaurant for the previous operators. “And it’s great to have Some of John Mathena’s father’s old outboards and other boating artifacts from Bluestone Lake adorn the walls.

Their Laker Years A Summer Series On Couples Who Retired At Smith Mountain Lake
Retirees To The Rescue John and Micki Singer help save lives with the Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad
Interview and Photography by Jerry Hale “Getting people to the hospital alive and in better shape than when we got to them is very satisfying. And when people with chronic conditions, who we’ve transported before, see us and say, ‘I’m so glad it’s you’ … well, that makes your day,” Micki Singer said.
J
ohn and Micki Singer have been fixtures with the Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad since the late 1990s. Their lives are beeper-ruled, and emergency response is literally their calling: they jointly respond to as many as 400 calls from 911 per year, often with John driving the ambulance and Micki tending to a patient in the back. “We’re much better rescuers than we are card players,” Micki said of their balance between serving and socializing. Q: Tell us a bit about life before retirement. John: I went to work for the U.S. Geological Survey Water Resources Division, based in Santa Barbara, California, immediately after earning a degree in geology at Fresno State College — now California State University, Fresno. My first job was hydrologist — we were trained in-house to do ground and surface water studies. I lived in Santa Barbara for my entire 29 years with USGS, but I traveled to seven other states while heading up a USGS drilling unit that served other agency hydrologists. Micki: I got a teaching certificate at UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara) and taught learning-challenged elementary, and later, high school students for 22 years. During that time, I also managed the Galleon Room, a country-western bar that shared a building with a bowling alley. I was raising five boys, and the extra income came in handy. Teaching line dancing at the bar paid better than teaching school! Q: How did you get from California to Smith Mountain Lake? John: Micki’s folks lived in Boston and, after we married, we would fly there for family gatherings. But one year, with two of her sons living on the way in Colorado and Ohio, we decided to do the trip by car and visit the boys. When it came time to drive home, the most direct route sent us through Blacksburg, where we stopped the first night. A brochure from Sunset Real Estate at Smith Mountain Lake in the motel’s travel information rack featuring, what else, an SML sunset caught my eye, and I grabbed one. Micki: I studied that brochure in the car the next day and thought, “Wouldn’t that be a nice place to retire?” Of course, the lake’s 1994 prices looked pretty attractive
62

compared to California real estate! John: So I was catching up on email back at work, and there’s a message offering voluntary early retirements for anyone with 25 years or more of USGS service. That was me. Once we’d decided to retire, we called Sunset Realty and arranged an April visit to see if we might want to live at SML. Prior to that, we hadn’t really seriously considered going anywhere east of the Mississippi. Micki: That first trip, we made offers on three homes, but all were rejected. I returned to SML alone just before summer of 1995 — John was still wedded to work even though he was about to retire. I bought a place I thought he’d like in Isle of Pines with 1½ acres that included lake frontage. John: As a kid, I had water-skied on irrigation canals and sloughs. The lake was considerably more appealing! We immediately bought a boat and upgraded the boat lift from aging slings to a cradle. Micki: I was in heaven! I finally had time to relax, read the paper, attend garden and book clubs. John and I water-skied several mornings a week in season, often with neighbor Bill Fife, who skied well into his 80s. Q: How did you get associated with the Moneta Rescue Squad? John: A neighbor recruited me for SML Marine [Volunter] Fire Department, saying, “We have lots of fun on the fire boats.” I began taking EMT classes and liked that, but found I rarely needed those skills on fire boat calls. My EMT instructor was with Moneta Rescue and encouraged me to join that group. Micki: I followed John into Moneta Rescue in 2000. Back then, the training was all local, and it was possible to rapidly advance in skill level and certifications, whereas now classes are often distant and fairly expensive. We liked what we were doing and kept learning more. John: In our early years, being on call was usually scheduled. Now, with fewer volunteers and many of them obligated to jobs and family events, weekday responses depend heavily on retirees who can run calls spur-of-the-moment. Micki: Yeah, these days we’re on call most always. It
definitely impinges on our lake time! Q: But you keep doing it, which means you must find emergency response rewarding. Micki: Getting people to the hospital alive and in better shape than when we got to them is very satisfying. And when people with chronic conditions, who we’ve transported before, see us and say, “I’m so glad it’s you” … well, that makes your day, or more likely, it seems, night. John: We have brought people who have died from cardiac events back from dying. You get a rush from that. We hope to keep doing it as long as we’re able. Q: What’s your take on being retired at SML? John: It’s a great place to retire. There are four seasons, summers aren’t too hot and winters are manageable, though seeming to get tougher as we get older.
Micki: We were back in California a while ago, and the traffic was horrible. We like the ruralness of this area — space around us, hearing the cows moo. It’s a wonderful place to be. Mickie is certified to instruct American Heart Association (AHA) CPR and First Aid, and taught the AHA “Friends and Family” course on CPR to more than 1,000 people as a project for the lake’s 50th anniversary. She also conducts high school and middle school student medical orientations. John served as captain, as well as in other leadership positions at Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad, for many years. He has responded to more than 5,000 calls during his time with the all-volunteer organization. He and Micki were instrumental in the fundraising and planning of Moneta Rescue’s remodeled headquarters on Old Moneta Road in downtown Moneta in 2014.

Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad When John Singer joined Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad in the mid-1990s, volunteers kept a regular call schedule. But that’s no longer the case for this all-volunteer squad because there are now only about 20 active volunteers. “When I started 20 years ago, we had set schedules where we’d normally work one night a week,” Singer said. “But as attrition took place, we could no longer cover the calls.” That’s not to say this isn’t a dedicated group of first responders. While he didn’t have exact numbers, Singer estimated the rescue squad responds to hundreds of calls each year. “It gets busier all the time,” he added. And that’s one reason there’s always a need for new members, not just for Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad,
72

but other rescue squads, as well. Often, the amount of training that’s required and where those classes are held can be barriers to volunteering. But Singer is hoping that will change. In June, the rescue squad began hosting an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic class at its headquarters on Old Moneta Road in downtown Moneta. The class meets two nights a week, from 6 to 10 p.m., through December. “It’s a lot of classroom time,” Singer said. Also starting this month, the rescue squad will host a similar class, but instead of meeting twice a week, participants will meet once weekly and receive lesson plans online. “We’ve never done this before,” Singer said. “But we have really high hopes.” By offering these opportunities, Singer is optimistic that it will help fill the volunteer gap for first responders in the region.
The Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad only has about 20 active members. The busy training schedule can be a barrier to recruitment, but officials hope a more streamlined approach and the addition of online lesson plans can help expand the ranks.

Members of the Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire Department responded to calls with their own boats when the squad was founded in 1974. Today the crew has eight fire boats.
“We’re all in the same boat,” he said of other area rescue squads. “If we put on these classes and we’re successful with them, then it should benefit the other squads, too.” Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad was founded in the mid-1960s, according to online records. In 2016, Calvin Woodford, one of the founding members of Moneta Ruritan Club, recalled how the club was instrumental in starting not only the rescue squad, but also Moneta Fire Department and Moneta Medical Center. “When we first organized, we had what we called a First-Aid crew,” Woodford said. “We bought an old hearse and painted it red.” In 2010, Singer, who was then squad captain, announced the rescue squad was looking for a new home. “This building was put up in 1972 or something,” Singer said in a 2010 article published in Laker Weekly. “We’re in the initial planning stages, talking stages, of trying to find another place to put up a nice new building.” Four years later, the existing building underwent a complete renovation and expansion that included new garage space for its ambulances. “We completed our remodel for $500,000,” Singer said. “And I got all of that money donated.” Half of that funding came from the James A. Meador Foundation. To continue operating, the rescue squad relies on community donations through the rescue squad’s annual fundraising letter campaign, as well as funding from Bedford County. page 62), who is an American Heart Association-certified CPR instructor, joined the rescue squad together after they moved to Smith Mountain Lake from California. Singer retired early from the U.S. Geological Survey’s water resources division, but had no prior training as a first responder. “There was no such thing as volunteer fire and rescue in California,” Singer recalled. “Everyone was paid.” Over his two decades with the rescue
squad, Singer has acquired numerous certifications and, in his words, has served “in every position” on the squad. He said he and Micki are ready for a younger generation to take the lead. “I’d like to see Cayla be successful,” Singer said of the squad’s current captain, Cayla Crouch. “I want to see the squad get back to where we cover a larger percentage of calls.” That’s not to say that only certified first responders would be welcome to join Moneta Rescue Squad. Singer said support volunteers also are greatly needed. “I would love to have someone come in here and do all the paperwork for us.” To learn more about Moneta Volunteer Rescue Squad, visit the squad’s page on Facebook.
Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire Department On any given summer weekend, you’re likely to see members of Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire Department patrolling the lake in bright yellow fire boats. “We’re dispatched to anything on or around the lake,” said Chief John Honaker, who joined the department 18 years ago after moving to the lake from Chesterfield County. When the department was founded in 1974 (it was chartered a year later), members would use their own boats, or ones that were donated, to respond to emergencies on the water. In more than 40 years, SMLMVFD has responded to thousands of emergencies

that have included oil and gasoline leaks, fuel spills, structure fires and boat crashes, among others. Today, with eight fire boats and 42 members, the department responds to 300 to 400 calls a year, according to President Tom Lovegrove. In addition, the fire boats are often called to help with traffic control during special events, including the Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon, the Tom Maynard Memorial Poker Run and July Fourth fireworks shows around the lake, according to Assistant Chief Jason Halm. More recently, the department has worked to raise awareness to prevent the possibility of electric shock drowning by offering free stray voltage checks in the water around docks. Electric shock drowning occurs when an electrical current passes through an individual in the water. A person can become paralyzed and unable to swim away or stay afloat. SMLMVFD member Neil Harrington has performed more than 200 stray volt-
age checks around docks since he started offering the free checks last year. Harrington said the majority of the docks he’s checked, 96 percent, have some stray voltage in the water around them. “The most common source of stray voltage entering the water comes from your boat and Jet Ski lifts,” a message posted to the department’s website said. As few as 2 volts could result in death from drowning, Harrington said. Based on his findings, many docks are built according to current building codes; changes to existing building codes may be necessary to prevent stray voltage from continuing, he added. In the meantime, the department has advised property owners to upgrade their docks’ electrical service to comply with the latest code, and to never allow swimmers in the water around boat lifts or personal watercraft lifts. Recruiting more members is another task the department hopes to tackle, too.
“We could use more volunteers, like everybody else,” Halm said. “You don’t have to live on the lake to be a member with us. We’ll take anybody within a reasonable distance.” As it works to protect the community, the department is hoping that residents will, in turn, show their support. Currently, SMLMVFD is fundraising to build a permanent station on land donated by Appalachian Power near the Oak Grove Public Boat Access Facility off Merriman Way Road, Lovegrove said. Through its 365 Club, SMLMVFD is selling annual memberships for $365 to help fund the new building. And if all goes according to plan, a groundbreaking could occur later this month. “Finally, we’re the closest we’ve ever been,” Halm said of starting construction on the building. Dock Tale Hour

The Secret Everybody ‘Knows’ What makes a family’s potato salad so special? It depends on who you ask ...
W
e Southerners do love our cookouts. Now, we don’t own the concept of the cookout: our cousins in the North and West also partake of this outdoor merriment. However, I’ll dare say that we who reside in the South consider the cookout to be a required summer activity, similar to growing tomatoes or tending to your hydrangeas. Summer just ain’t summer without at least one good cookout. Cookouts are all about the food. There will, of course, be the rousing games of cornhole or maybe horseshoes, some great tunes (I’m partial to Jimmy Buffet or Lynyrd Skynyrd), and perhaps a few adult beverages alongside pitchers of sweet tea. However, the food is the star of this soirée. As I recently planned for our end-ofsummer event, the menu I envisioned included grilled burgers and hot dogs with all the fixins, baked beans with just the right amount of brown sugar and onion, dense dark chocolate brownies and juicy, sweet watermelon. And, to round out the menu, the champion of side dishes, the workhorse of all Southern feasts, potato

salad. All Southern families have tucked away in their family treasure chest the knowledge of the secret ingredient that makes their potato salad the best in the land. Thing is, our family has a bit of trouble reaching consensus regarding what makes our potato salad extra special. “Hello?” “Hey, it’s your dad, whatcha doing? “Hey. I’m just making the grocery list for the cookout.” “You’re making potato salad, right? None of that store-bought stuff.” “Of course.” “Well remember, it’s all about the preparation. You have to boil the potatoes with the skin on, then peel ’em after they’re cooked and cooled. And slice and layer with the mayo.” “Thanks, Dad. See you Saturday.” Five minutes later… “Hello?” “Hey, it’s Scotty.” “Hey ‘lil bro.” “Hey, Dad tells me you’re making the potato salad for Saturday. Don’t forget the family recipe secret ingredient is celery seed. You forgot to add that last year.”
“Oh, that’s right, thanks for the heads up, kiddo.” “No problem. I’m bringing the beer.” “Thanks, see you Saturday.” Ten minutes later… Hello?” “Hi! It’s cousin Joyce.” “Hey there cuz, what’s up?” “I was thinking you’re probably making potato salad for Saturday, right?” “Uh-huh.” “Well, don’t forget that the family recipe secret ingredient is a little paprika, sprinkled on top. Gives it a little extra color.” “Thanks for the reminder. You still bringing carrot cake?” “Yep. See you Saturday.” I do love my tribe. But they all forgot that the family recipe secret ingredient for potato salad is a little mustard mixed in with the mayo. Just like Nana used to make. Hmmm, I wonder now, where did I put that family recipe for brownies? Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties.
