hope you’ve been enjoying this summer’s series on a historical look at the towns that make up the greater Smith Mountain Lake community as much as I have!

In May, we started with Moneta, worked our way to Huddleston in June and searched for Wirtz last month. The series wraps up in this month’s issue with a look at the lake’s southside and the community of Penhook. A special shoutout to our freelance writer Anne Reynolds and to the friendly folks at the Franklin County Historical Society and the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library for their help in locating photos to go along with these features. If you haven’t been to either of these places, you should. They’re wonderful resources and rich in history.

00

Also in this issue, experience the recent U.S. Team Roping Virginia Championships at Double D Arena in Wirtz and learn more about California poppies from our gardening columnist. Plus, we’ll have a look inside one of the eight homes that has been selected for this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour scheduled for Oct. 11 through 13. As always, we’d love to hear your story ideas. Send us an email to editor@smithmountainlaker.com.

Garden Gold The California poppy was a captivating sight for explorers along the West Coast Story and photography by catriona tudor erler

SHORELINES Home & Garden

The California poppy is a startlingly beautiful garden plant that also has a history, lore and mystique that adds to its fascination. According to legend, as early as 1680, when the Spanish began stopping off in California as part of their annual China trade trips, the seamen would use the vivid spring displays of golden California poppies as landmarks to identify their location. It’s a lovely concept, but according to California poppy expert Curtis Clark, professor emeritus of Cal Poly Pomona, there are four basic groups of California poppy, each with its own geographical range. Inland you’ll find the massive displays that draw tourists from all over the world. The coastal varieties bloom more sporadically, but over a longer period. Nevertheless, the Spanish explorers were captivated by the luminous flowers, calling them copa de oro, which means cup of gold, and dormidera, the sleepy one, for the flower’s habit of closing up at the end of the day. Fast forward 300 years to 1952 when John Steinbeck described California poppies in his novel “East of Eden,” writing, “These too are of a burning color — not orange, not gold, but if pure gold were liquid and could raise a cream, that golden cream might be the color of the poppies.”

22

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER AUGUST 2019

The plant remained nameless to the scientific world until 1816, when the “Rurik,” a Russian ship on a three-year exploratory journey around the world, stopped in the San Francisco bay for a month to restock supplies. At the time the area was occupied only by a small Spanish fort and mission. Aboard the ship were two scientists, Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838), who was the ship’s botanist, and Johann Friedrich Gustav von Eschscholtz (1793-1831), the ship’s surgeon and entomologist. The two cultivated a deep friendship, and together they explored the region while the ship’s restocking took place. While on their rambles, the goldenflowered California poppy caught their eye. In honor of his great friend, Chamisso named the bloom Eschscholzia californica. Eschscholtz didn’t seem to mind the fact that Chamisso dropped the letter “t” from the botanical name, for he returned the favor and named a variety of plants, including the genus Camissonia, after

Spanish sailors in the 17th century are said to have looked for California poppies along the coast as landmarks along their trading routes. California designated the poppy its state flower in 1903.

Chamisso. (The ship’s captain, Otto von Kotzebue, liked Eschscholtz well enough to name an island in the Marshall Islands Eschscholtz Atoll. In 1946 it was renamed Bikini Atoll.) While ashore in California, Eschscholtz collected plant specimens and took copious notes describing the native California flora the two friends found. Eschscholtz’s botanical collections from his time in California were published in 1826 under the title “Descriptiones plantarum novae Californiae, adjectis florum exoticorum analysibus.” It was the first scientific description of California’s native flora and

the first reference to California in the title of a scientific paper. Ten years after Chamisso officially gave it a botanical name, the English plant collector David Douglas (of Douglas fir fame) gathered seeds of the California poppy in southern Oregon and sent them to the Royal Botanical Society in England. Thus the beautiful plant was introduced to Britain, where it became the darling of English gardens. In the 1850s, the California gold miners were enamored by both gold ore and the golden poppies, as they called the flowers. According to one tale, some of the California native people believed the yellow nuggets the miners sought so earnestly were petals of the golden poppies buried deep in the earth. In 1903 California designated the California poppy as its state flower, adding to the aura of the Golden State. Today, state and local municipalities include the seeds in erosion control mixtures and sow the plants along roadsides and in restoration

projects. In these applications, the poppy’s value is golden. Long before the Europeans and Russians began exploring the coast of California and David Douglas sent California poppy seeds back to Britain, the local population prized these plants not just for their beauty, but also their medicinal and nutritive value and as a source of oil extracted from the seeds. California tribal people would dry the above-ground parts of the plant when in flower and grind them into a powder to relieve headaches and stomachaches, as well as for a sleep aid and to reduce anxiety. They also dealt with toothache by applying the mildly narcotic milky sap from unripe seed pods. Unlike its distant relative the opium poppy, California poppies do not depress the central nervous system and are non-addictive. California poppy tinctures are available today for the same purposes used in ancient times, as well as for incontinence. In addition, the leaves of the plant are

used externally in powder form for antimicrobial properties that are effective for the elimination of head lice.

Easy to Grow known by many names, including golden poppy, California sunlight, cup-of-gold, flame flower and thimble of gold, California poppies are a beautiful addition to gardens. A short-lived perennial in its native environs, in Virginia we can grow them as annuals. California poppies are plants of the sun that flourish in open, sunny spots. They also have the light-driven habit of opening their petals early in the morning and closing up as soon as the sun begins to lower or the day becomes overcast. Curiously, pollinating beetles often become trapped in the closed flower overnight. California poppy expert Curtis Clark postulates that the poppies may be an important beetle shelter. The plant’s long tap roots (an aid to drought-tolerance) do not like to be dis-

turbed, so you’ll have best success if you sow the seeds directly where you’d like them to grow. This fall just before the ground freezes, scatter the small, beadlike seeds. Like most wildflower seeds, they don’t want to be buried, but they do need seed-to-soil contact. Gently tamp down the area where you’ve strewn the seeds (use your hand or carefully walk over the area) and then water. They’ll germinate in 10 to 15 days and by the time the first frost occurs, the seedlings will be well enough established to survive the cold. By spring, the seemingly delicate flowers will have established long, robust tap roots full of food and water, all set for the spring flush of flower. Hybridizers have been at work on these plants that pack such a punch in the garden. For example, in addition to offering seeds of the original California poppy species, the seed company Eden Brothers sells a “Mixed Color” selection that blooms in hues of red, orange, yellow, white and pink. offer double varieties and ruffled petals that have names such as ‘Summer Sorbet’, ‘Copper Swirl’ and ‘Jelly Beans’. If you opt for the species, consider combining them with the blue flowering California native, arroyo lupine, which is available from Eden Brothers. The lupines are annuals that grow about 2 feet tall and produce upright spikes of deep blue and white blooms. Like California poppies, they are a prolific re-seeder. You’ll find this poppy-lupine combination growing wild on the inland hills of California where they cover vast open areas. If lupines aren’t to your taste, find other blue flowers to accent the golden poppies. California poppies are great in container gardens, mixed beds, rock gardens, as a front-of-the border display and in waterwise (xeric) landscapes. In full sun, they’ll give you a long-lasting show of golden cupped flowers. To extend the flowering, deadhead the faded blooms early in the season. Toward the end of the blooming period, leave some flowers to go to seed and self-sow to insure they return the following year. Enjoy your own gold rush at Smith Mountain Lake and grow a bit of California history. While it may be legend that the 17th-century Spaniards navigated the coast of California using the blooming poppy fields, modern Lakers who ply the shores of our waters can use your display of golden California poppies as a landmark along their journey.

BRIGHT FRIENDSHIP

German botanist Adelbert von Chamisso named the California poppy Eschscholzia californica after his friend, entomologist Johann Friedrich Gustav von Eschscholtz, during a ’round-the-world scientific voyage aboard the Russian ship “Rurik” in 1816.

THEY WENT CRUISING FOR A CONTRACTOR

It’s the kind of story that could only happen here: When Howard and Nancy Borum were looking for a general contractor, they boated around the lake, looking at signs and getting a feel for what was being built. That led them to Gardner Construction Company. Nancy also owns ID Collaborative, a North Carolina-based commercial interior design firm. ALL ABOARD!

Penhook was a stop on the Franklin & Pittsylvania Railroad, which ran from 1880 until 1932 between Rocky Mount to what is now Gretna in Pittsylvania County. The name comes from the region’s ties to the tobacco trade. Tobacco buyers were known as “pinhookers,” but thanks to an error by the area’s first postmaster, the Post Office christened the area “Penhook.”

erched at the eastern edge of franklin county, the community of Penhook was long known for commerce, according to resources at the Franklin County Historical Society. From the installation of its first post office in 1854, the community has supported a number of businesses, including Stone & Co., whose proprietor, James Waller Stone, was said to have brought the first car into Franklin County in 1915, along with a well-known saloon. An early 20th-century photo from the collections at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture depicts both buildings, as well as a store built by C.L. Carter, ABOVE which dated to the 1870s. The name Penhook relates to the community’s ties to the tobacco trade and may be influenced by a spelling error. The community featured a large holding pen for tobacco. Farmers would roll their crops to the pen in barrels and tobacco buyers, known as “pinhookers,” would select the tobacco to purchase. When a farmer did not receive the price he had expected for his crop, he would say he had been “hooked.” Murphy, the community’s first postmaster, was charged with sending the community’s name to the Post Office Department, but legend has it that he neglected to dot the “I” in “Pinhook,” and the name “Penhook” was born. Of course, farming was a major part of the economy in Penhook, and in the 1940s, the shortage of men available to work on the farms led to a surprising solution. Moneta resident Charles Walker spoke about the farm that belonged to his wife, Lib’s, family. “During World War II, Lib was just a wee little thing, and they had German prisoners of war working in the fields, tobacco and corn, and Lib would take buckets of water out to them,” Walker said. “The trucks took them down to their barracks in Sandy Level in Pittsylvania County, down the road. The barracks had been CCC camps in the ’30s, so that became a prisoner of war camp.” Indeed, according to a 2008 Roanoke

GERMAN P.O.W.S WORKED IN PENHOOK

Around 17,000 German prisoners of war were held in Virginia during WWII, in barracks such as this one in Sandy Level. The enemy prisoners were driven to farms and factories in the area, providing needed labor during the war.

Times/Laker Weekly article, German marinen (sailors) who were housed in the former Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Sandy Level helped cut timber for lumber and pulp wood, worked in a cannery or labored on farms. The arrangement seems to have been beneficial to all involved. “It is apparent that Virginians got along very well with the enemy in their midst during World War II,” the article said. “There were few protests against coddling of POWs as were voiced in other parts of America. These visitors seemed to be relatively happy, undoubtedly relieved to be far from gunfire and battlefield conditions … But perhaps most important of all, those who remained within the Commonwealth for a year or two filled a very real need: they provided invaluable labor and their help certainly was appreciated by hundreds of farmers and scores of industrialists hard pressed by wartime

conditions.” By 1945, there were around 17,000 Germans living in 27 camps scattered throughout Virginia. Camp Pickett at Blackstone was responsible for branch camps at Catawba, Cumberland, Danville, Green Bay, Radford, Salem and Sandy Level, all of which (except Danville) utilized former CCC camps for housing. Almost all of the prisoners returned to Germany at the close of the war. Lib Walker’s family played a role in the more modern history of the region as well. “William Emmett Jefferson, Lib’s father, was the one most instrumental in getting AEP and the state to construct the first park and public boat ramp on Smith Mountain Lake in Penhook,” Charles Walker said. “It was constructed in 1968 and dedicated in 1972 with Jefferson family members in attendance. Two of Mr. Jefferson’s granddaughters, Kathryn Jefferson and Juli Jefferson, did the honors at the unveiling of the memorial and plaque. These same two ladies re-created the dedication 44 years later, as the lake celebrated its 50th year.” Penhook is now known for its beautiful shorelines and lovely homes. It may be that an introduction to the community’s history and the variety of people who contributed to that history make it an even richer place to live.

Mike kept receipts for materials, fittings and components that totaled $40,000 and has logged 3,000 hours of direct labor. A marine survey of the restored vessel pegs its replacement value at $175,000 — proof of the value added by hard work and prudent shopping. While marine surveys typically are devoid of compliments, Tugly’s inspection documents convey the excellence of the couple’s restoration work. “It is unusual to find the creativity shown in the redesign of the interior,” the survey stated. “The level of skill and craftsmanship in so many areas, and the devotion to see it through to completion in one man, with the help from his wife, are impressive. Fortunately, they had a dock on a lot they purchased in 2011 at Smith Mountain Lake. The couple designed and built it mostly themselves for Tugly. STEERS SURVEY THE SECENE

Steers used in roping competitions wear protective wraps over their horns. Matt Wilson (background, bottom right) and Coleman Simmons compete as a team at Double D Arena in June.

ith a gentle nudge of her spurs, a cowgirl coaxes her mount into position. The horse backs up a few short steps until his rear haunches press against the heavy steel corner railing that defines the back of the starting box. For a few seconds, he fidgets just inches shy of a glowing electronic eye beam which, if violated before a steer has been released from its confining chute, will cost this team an automatic 5-second penalty.

54

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER AUGUST 2019

The horse then settles, ears perked alertly and eyes toward the still-confined steer, which has been prepped with horn wraps as protection from the cinching lasso loop that will interrupt its all-out sprint down and across the arena. With her horse ready, reins held loosely in her left hand and open lasso loop high in her right, the header gives the official a subtle nod. The clunk of the chute’s gate opening is instantly followed by an explosion of pent-up power as the horse bolts into pursuit 2 yards behind the sprinting steer. As she twirls the lasso loop, the cowgirl, also called a header, releases it to settle over the steer’s protected horns. On the opposite side of the steer chute, another horse and rider — known as the heeler — have cata-

pulted into the chase, just behind the header. The heeler throws his loop around the steer’s rear hooves. In a well-practiced bit of horse and rider ballet, he stops and pulls the rope taut as his header teammate tightens her rope so the steer is splayed onto the soft dirt floor of the arena. If they are successful, an official flagger signals to stop the clock. This team is just one of hundreds that competed in June at Double D Arena in Wirtz during a team roping competition. Dale and Debbie Simmons, along with their grown children, Coleman, Chad and Shelly, hosted ropers from 10 states, including Pennsylvania, Alabama and Texas. The event is one of 25 World Series Team Roping and

U.S. Team Roping competitions sponsored annually by Jx2 NTRL Productions whose owner, John Johnson, 53, travels from Piney Flats, Tennessee, (near Bristol) to each event with a team of helpers. They use laptops loaded with up-tothe-minute stats on each roper’s success percentages, average times for steer takedowns, number of wins/placings and annual prize winnings — all rolled into a handicap rating that indicates roping prowess. “Handicapping saved the sport,” Johnson said. “Because of it, ropers compete against people of similar abilities and feel they have a fair chance of earning prize money any given weekend.” Cash purses and other prizes are much of what bring the ropers to each event, Johnson explained. Owning horses, transporting several to a competition and spending weekends on the road is costly. But the prizes can be significant. Simmons and younger son Chad, 30, split $5,750 for fastest time in one event. Chad and another partner split a $3,000 second place award in that same division. Prizes can also include saddles, silver belt buckles, knives and even pickup trucks. Chad, in fact, pulled a new horse trailer home from Piney Flats last year. “The Simmons guys rope really well, ride good horses and win enough to be respected throughout the circuit,” Johnson stated. “They’ve won in Las Vegas at an annual December competition held in conjunction with the National Rodeo Finals; they’ve won in Jacksonville and in Oklahoma City where the purses can total $4 million over a week’s worth of roping events.” The Double D Arena, which is located on Brooks Mill Road, is one of the finest private roping facilities Johnson visits, he said. The Simmons family owns and operates an excavating business — “to pay the horse bills,” Dale joked — but raising and competing with quarter horses is their passion. Dale, who was raised near what is now Westlake Corner, moved to the 200-acre property in 1980 and began competing in roping events in 1995. Two years ago, he built the 140-foot by 270-foot arena pole barn to complement the property’s other

structures, including a barn sufficient for raising 90 cattle, stalls for horses and covered shelters for the 40 to 50 excavating machines his company owns. The roping ring in the state-of-the-art arena measures 100 feet by 220 feet. At one end is a two-story enclosure containing a tack room and a second-floor observation area with large windows and a desk for an announcer and scorekeeper. Competition lighting, a high-end public address system, restrooms and a kitchen, where Dale’s family helps keep roping teams fed, round out the basic amenities. There is also a 4-acre parking lot that can accommodate up to 100 trucks and

trailers, complete with electric and water hook-ups for those who need them. The team of Clint Copenhaver and Troy Ryles brought their rig from Macon, Georgia — their third competition weekend in a row. “It sort of gets in your blood,” Clint said, “and the people are nice to be around. Horse people are great people.” Dale Simmons agreed. “Hosting these events takes a lot of preparation and some clean-up afterwards,” he said. “But we enjoy having the team ropers come here to compete. And local residents are more than welcome to stop by and catch the action.”

Dock Tale Hour

H

UBS: “Well dang, doesn’t look like the weather is going to hold today.” ME: “I told you so — Weather Channel predicted

rain all day.” “Well, they don’t always get it right.” “So, fishing and taking the boat out are off the table. What else can we do today?” “I’ve got some recorded fishing shows I’d like to catch up on.” “Aw, come on … sitting around all day watching other people fish is a little depressing.” “There’s the NASCAR race on at 2 p.m.” “Hard no.” “Well, what do YOU want to do? And please don’t say anything HGTV. We’ve watched so many Fixer Upper reruns that I can quote Chip Gaines verbatim.” “I don’t know ... hey, ya wanna do a puzzle?” Crickets. “Ah, come on, it’ll be fun!” Crickets. Have you ever wondered about the history of the jigsaw puzzle? Surprisingly, jigsaw puzzles have only been around about as long as the United States. According to research, a London engraver and mapmaker, John Spilsbury, created the first puzzle back in 1760. This creative innovator mounted a map onto a piece of wood and then cut around the countries using a “fine-bladed marquetry saw.” The result was the first puzzle used to teach geography to British children. Adults eventually also became enamored with jigsaw puzzles as a form of entertainment. In particular, during the Great Depression puzzles created and marketed for adults became extremely popular, with sales in early 1933 reaching a whopping 10 million per week, based on an article by Anne D. Williams titled “Jigsaw Puzzles - A Brief History.” Most modern day puzzles are now mass produced on paperboard, and new technologies allow for laser cutting of puzzle images and pieces. However, the moniker “jigsaw” remains. HUBS: “OK, so, we start with all the straight edges, right?”

The Puzzle That Persists

Just as puzzles continue to fascinate us, one rainy-day lark lingers on.

ME: “Oh, I always start by grouping like type colors. But we can do straight edges first.” “Hey, look, I think I found an eye.” “The eye of what? This is a sailboats puzzle.” “Ha! Maybe it’s a sea monster eye!” “Yes dear.” Three hours later the four sides of the puzzle frame are completed, and we leave the remaining pieces strewn across the dining table. Over the next month, as friends and family pass through the lake house, I notice that several of our guests are drawn to the array of scattered colorful shapes on the table top. Many pause, peer across the pieces and take their turn con-

tributing to the sailboat images coming into focus. Some linger for hours, content to quietly focus their energies on where the next piece perfectly interlocks into place. Though National Puzzle Month is celebrated each January, the hazy lazy days of August seem the opportune time to sit, relax and enjoy the blood pressure soothing contentment of puzzle making. Drop on by, and you can help me and the Hubs finish our current puzzle-in-development. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties. Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
