Editor’s Note H appy New Year, and let’s usher 2020 out the door quickly! Suffice it to say that last year was less than ideal for many of us, but here we are, ready to start fresh. Last year, we revamped the way we conducted our polling for the Best of SML Awards. We first started with a nomination period, followed by a time to vote for your favorites. Starting on page 34, check out the winners in more than 60 categories. Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote for their favorites! Since this is also our wedding issue, you’ll find an update on how two area venues have managed to navigate the past year, as well as our annual wedding and lodging guides. Be sure to check out our gardening columnist’s in-depth look at growing succulents — they’re not as difficult to grow as you might think! Finally, we recap how a few resilient lakers have managed to keep themselves amused and safe over the past year during the pandemic.

S
UCCULENTS ARE PLANTS THAT drink responsibly.” So says Debra Baldwin, who has been in the vanguard of popularizing succulents in this country. They are the camels of the plant world, storing water in their fleshy leaves, and living off that moisture through rainless months of dry heat in their native habitats. These qualities make them ideal for growing in containers. Even if you forget to water for a very long time, the odds are good that you can return a dormant, dead-looking plant to active growth. Happily, there are a few wonderful succulents that are hardy in our climate, and if you yearn to grow one that’s not, you can bring the container indoors for winter. The plants will love the warm, dry atmosphere your house provides in winter.
Types of Containers Mostsucculentsareshallowrooted, soyoucangrow them in containers with surprisingly little depth. As for aesthetics, you might opt for a glazed

orange pot to contrast with the silvery blue colors of many sempervivum and echeveria rosettes. Add the chartreuse, cascading Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’ to a cobalt blue pot. A golden-flecked glaze will highlight the golden spines of a cholla cactus. Look for pots with texture to echo that of the succulent or cactus growing inside. If you plan to keep your container outdoors all winter, choose one that can withstand the freezing and thawing cycles. Glazed pots or high-fire stoneware pots fired to between 2,190 degrees and 2,350 degrees are your best options because they’re better sealed from water absorption. A pot that’s wider at the top than the bottom also is less likely to break during freeze-thaw cycles because the soil can expand upward as it freezes. Hypertufa troughs made of a concrete mixture are a great choice for cold-hardy containers. You’ll find instructions for making your own online, or turn to the book “Creating and Planting Garden Troughs” by Joyce Fingerut and Rex Murfitt, which won the American Horticulture Society Book of the Year award.
Echeveria such as the one shown here have belllike flowers. Sempervivum blossoms look more like stars. Another distinguishing feature between these two similar plants is that Sempervivum typically has slightly serrated leaves, while Echeveria are smooth.

Feel free to think outside the standard container. How about planting in an old leather boot or a worn out pair of high heeled shoes? An old toy car with chipped paint or rust spots has a certain je ne sais quoi. Large shells are excellent as containers. Try a large conch, giant clam or scallop shell. Give an old leaky wheelbarrow or watering can a new life as a planter. Recycle the rusted wheel hub of an old car or a birdbath that is past its prime. A recent trend is to plant succulents in frames and display them hanging on a wall or propped up against a support. See sidebar for instructions on how to create this fun look. Start looking around with a fresh eye; you’ll begin to see all sorts of items you never before thought of as planters.
Think outside the standard container. How about planting in an old leather boot or a worn out pair of high heeled shoes? Large shells are excellent as containers. Try a large conch, giant clam or scallop shell. Give an old leaky wheelbarrow or watering can a new life as a planter. Planting Mix Contrary to the common wisdom of never using garden soil in a pot, succulents benefit from a mix of two-thirds good garden loam, which can be either clay- or sand-based. Mix that with a potting mix designed for cacti and succulents. Avoid mixes that contain perlite. When the mix is watered, the lightweight pellets will to float to the soil surface, creating an undesirable blush of white. Typically novice gardeners are advised to fill a garden container to within an inch of the top so there is room to water. Not so for succulents. The soil should come right up to rim. Otherwise, the leaves inside the pot will rot from the water, and the plant is likely to die.
Designing with Succulents Writing in her book, “Hardy Succulents: Tough Plants for Every Climate,” Gwen Moore Kelaidis encourages readers to, “Think of a pot as a small garden in a frame. You can create a miniature landscape by adding a rock or two. You can add a small conifer for height or interest. The pot frames the picture and isolates this small garden from the rest of your landscape.” In addition to composing with succulents, accessorize with rocks and shells, pieces of colored glass, small mirrors or sculptural features to create a miniature scene in your trough or dish garden.

The maroon and burgundy Sempervivum contrast nicely with the chartreuse colored shoe. Pale pink flowers of Echeveria ‘Imbricata’ (above) echo the stair color. The simple blue composition has power due to repetition.

A Succulent Work of Art Shadowbox planters are a fun way to display your plants
IF YOU ALREADY HAVE established succulents growing in your garden (or you have a friend who is willing to share), you can harvest pieces from these plants for your frame project. Cut stem sections 1 to 2 inches long and remove lower leaves so you have a rosette atop a bare stem. Let cuttings dry for a few days before planting. The cut ends will callus over in the process enhancing its ability to root. Alternatively, you can purchase succulent cuttings online.
Here’s how to create your frame: 1. Find an old picture frame or choose an inexpensive one from the store. 2. Build a shadow box 3 inches deep and sized to fit on the back of the frame. For longevity use naturally water-resistant redwood or cedar. Nail or screw into place. This box will provide needed depth for soil and roots. 3. Once the box is attached, lay the frame face down and using staples secure hardware cloth cut to fit to in the inside edges of the frame. The ½-inch grid is small enough to hold potting soil in, yet large enough to accommodate plant stems.

5. A coat of outdoor paint will make the frame and box more weather durable. Consider choosing a color that will harmonize or contrast pleasingly with the foliage colors of your plants.
Succulent Container Gardens Debra Lee Baldwin Timber Press, 248 pp., $29.95
6. When the paint is dry add a potting soil designed for succulents and cacti. Avoid mixes that contain perlite. The lightweight pellets will rise to the surface, leaving a mess of white perlite on top. 7. As you add the mix, shake the box to settle the soil. Compact it with your hands when it reaches the level of the hardware cloth, pressing with your hands on the mesh. Continue adding more planting mix until it is at the level of the wire grid. 8. Use a pencil, pen, chopstick or paintbrush end to poke holes in the soil, and insert a cutting into each hole and tamp the soil around. The rosette should be resting on the mesh grid. 9. Have fun experimenting with colors and textures to create a design that pleases you. It helps to begin with the larges pieces that anchor the design and then fill in with the smaller ones. When you’re done, you still may catch glimpses of the wire. Not to worry. The plants will quickly grow to fill in those gaps; it’s better not to pack them in too closely to start.
Container Succulents Kentaro Kuroda and Ayako Eifuku Tuttle Publishing, 96 pp., $14.99
10. Once you’re pleased with the result, gently water the plants to settle them in. 11. Now is the waiting time. Leave the frame lying horizontally for about two weeks to give time for the plants to root. Do not water during this time and keep them out of direct sunlight. 12. Once the cuttings have rooted, hang your living picture with stout wire in a spot where it will receive good sunlight. 13. Water monthly, laying the frame flat and allowing it to drain before rehanging.

With their variety of foliage color, texture and pattern, succulents and cacti offer a world of creative possibilities for plant combinations. Play with echoing or contrasting shapes. A piece of driftwood or interestingly shaped stone might complete the composition.
Top Dressing Succulents and cacti benefit from a top dressing of inert materials such as pebbles, rocks, marbles or other glass beads, seashells, and nuts in their shells. These dry materials wick away moisture from the base of the plants, protecting them from rot. They also are highly decorative and can be a big part of your design statement.
Care Your biggest pitfall with succulents is to overwater. Unfortunately, you don’t get warnings from the plant that it is under stress until it’s too late. Succulent expert Debra Lee Baldwin explains, “It

can take weeks for a dying succulent to look dead, then all of it sudden it turns to mush. Water them about once a week spring through fall, but don’t worry if you skip a time or two. They look better with regular water, but they can get by without.” Succulents for the most part also are light-loving plants, needing at least six hours of sun exposure daily. If you over winter them indoors, make sure they are in a bright window, or keep them under grow lights for at least six hours daily. Whether in-ground or in containers, also make sure they have good drainage and good air circulation. Most of the succulent genera are adapted to arid climates, and have no natural defenses against pests such as mealybugs, mold and mildew.
Choosing your Plants While winter-hardy succulents do exist, most of this diverse group of plants is frost-tender. “Succulents from the NewWorld and northern climes, such as sempervivums and some sedums, agaves, cacti and echeverias have inbuilt antifreeze so they

can tolerate low temperatures,” said Baldwin.“But most from South Africa and Madagascar don’t have that protection. If the water in their leaves freezes, the moisture expands and bursts through cell walls, which can kill them.” You can over winter tender plants indoors as long as they have enough light, but Baldwin also suggests that there’s nothing wrong with growing succulents as annuals. “Enjoy them in the warm months, as you would pansies and petunias, and then throw them away,” she says. For winter hardiness, your best choices are the sempervivums (commonly known as hen and chicks) or sedums. If that seems limiting, remember there are hundreds of different sempervivums, many hardy to USDA zones 4 or 5, so you won’t be a pauper for choice. In fact, they need a cold dormancy and find extremely hot weather taxing. One of sempervivums many allures they are color-shifters. In fall, when the nights are getting cooler, they develop beautiful coloration, displaying their boldest hues toward the end of winter and in early spring. They can change colors so

dramatically that you almost wouldn’t recognize the plant as the one you grew in summer. Be bold, experiment with different ones, and soon you’ll find the ones that flourish in your growing situation. Sedums are another cold-hardy succulent that can be an excellent complement to sempervivums. They tend to have a finer texture than hen and chicks, and many will cascade over the sides of your container, adding the exciting design element of movement. Echeveria are another lovely succulent with some cold hardiness, but not as much as sempervivums. Like hens and chicks, they form rosettes, and it can be hard for the novice to tell them apart. If you’re not certain which you have, check the leaves. Sempervivum usually have tiny teeth along the edges of the leaves; echeveria leaf edges typically are smooth. Other hardy succulents include some agaves, yuccas and cacti. (“All cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti,” quips Debra Lee Baldwin.) AKERS LIVINGWITHTHE PANDEMIC have adopted new routines that recognize the threat of COVID-19. While many are hopeful the New Year will bring a return to normal we all crave, here is a look at some strategies residents have embraced over the past year. Last February, the business community was following news of a highly contagious and debilitating virus. Annual events were promptly canceled, and retailers feared they were facing substantial economic losses due to a lack of tourism. But time at — and on — the lake provided a welcome break from being quarantined. Boat traffic blossomed with that pattern continuing throughout the summer. Area realtors initially expected that out-of-state buyers would be prevented from traveling to our area, and would-be sellers would not want strangers traipsing through their homes, resulting in a market shutdown. Lo and behold, the opposite occurred. “The combination of low mortgage rates and people realizing that they were going to be working from home — perhaps permanently — was a catalyst,” said Mike DeGiorgi of MKB Realtors. “Buyers embraced taking online tours and became comfortable making offers having only visited a property through their realtor’s cellphone or iPad lens. Transactions went electronic, with online offers, negotiations and closings requiring no faceto-face interactions.” The resulting boom soon saw properties that might normally be on the market for 50 to 100 days or more to selling within a day or two of being listed, with sales of waterfront properties up an estimated 70% over the previous year. There were residents who were hard-hit economically by the pandemic, while others responded meaningfully. After having recently moved to the lake full time and living at Bernard’s Landing, Anne and Gilles Delhommeau were pleased to learn ofThe Landing Love Project and signed on as delivery drivers. “We hit area roads with healthy, hot meals two or three times a week,” Anne said. “And we really look forward to seeing the families on our route. Food insecurity is something no one should have to experience. Bruno and Tiffany (Silva, who

founded and manage the effort) are making a direct impact on the local community. We love helping them.” Colleen and Joe McNulty have been stalwart volunteers at Lake Christian Ministries for 20 years. While Joe has recently been sidelined with health issues, Colleen, who has managed the nonprofit’s food pantry for most of those years, continues working there three days a week.
Barb Moody, a member of the SML chapter of American Association of University Women, plunged into the COVID crisis by making masks for those who needed them early-on when shortages were rampant.

“Pre-virus, it took little more than stocking the shelves to prepare for clients to self-serve,” she said. “Now we must pre-sort everything into portions for various-sized families, from a single to 10 or 12 adults and children, and hand it to them in their cars. We start getting things ready at 7:30 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and don’t finish cleaning up until early afternoon.” Many lake area restaurants have faced unprecedented challenges and have had to modify their

operations to adapt to state regulations as well as customer needs. One restaurant, Napoli Cowboy, closed for a brief period back in March and then reopened for take-out and delivery in April. “We stayed open seven days a week for six weeks,” said owner Ray Wilson. “And that was brutal for the staff. But we kept all our employees and gave everyone a raise to help them with their finances. Thankfully, we found our customers to be extremely generous with their tips, even at the take-out window. And several loyal patrons came by to leave $500 and $1,000 checks to be divided among the staff.” Business improved when inside dining, albeit at reduced capacity, was allowed in June, although seating at the bar was prohibited. “Outdoor seating helped us serve more customers,” Wilson noted, “but when bad weather hit, that got quite literally ‘rained out.’ ” Wilson said he and his family have tried to dine out at competitors’ restaurants the nights Napoli is closed.“We all need to support one another if we’re going to get through this mess,” he said. Teachers have faced their own special challenges. Mary HannahWheeler is in her second year as director of the theatre arts program at Franklin County High School and is also an adjunct professor in Theatre at Ferrum College. “We never studied how to teach during a pandemic,” Wheeler said. “So this has been ‘learn as you go’ for teachers as well as students. At school, we must keep our distance even when working through a scene. When we’re rehearsing virtually, things are often complicated by technology snafus.” A bit of silver lining came from much-improved access to Broadway productions online. “We can

see and analyze shows we never could have seen in normal times,” she said. “But preparing virtual classes is hard work for teachers. It takes extra hours every day to create online content and experience. At first I worked weekends, evenings, even some all-nighters.Then I realized I had to limit my computer time just for self-care. So I now shut it down on weekends.” Wheeler praised FCHS administrators for being helpful and supportive throughout the pandemic. “We are hoping to produce a spring musical and will decide in January whether it will be entirely virtual or played to a limited audience,” she said. “Students are now working toward a one-act performance for the upcoming Virginia State High School League competition, which will be a virtual performance.” It’s not just teachers and administrators who have had to adapt to virtual learning models. Parents of school-age children, not to mention the kids themselves, are negotiating new territory. “I’ve learned a whole lot about my

son these last few months,” said Andrea Fansler of her son Sam, a 15-year-old FCHS sophomore. “When parents are away at work, you have to put more faith in your child. Before, teachers supervised them for much of the day; with classes online, it’s up to the students to log on and stay engaged despite their preferences for other activities — for Sam, that’s playing golf whenever he can squeeze it in.” Fansler noted that Sam desperately missed time with school friends. “But he has become good friends with several retirees he’s met at the golf course, and that’s good experience for him,” she added. Janet Potter, former president of the SML chapter of American Association of University Women, surveyed the club’s membership late last year to find out how folks were spending their time during COVID. Responses were wide-ranging, she said, and included baking, purging and organizing, reading, taking RV trips and Sunday car rides, adopting a pet
and sewing. One respondent, feeling life-threatened by the prospect of contracting COVID-19, set about writing a growing-up memoir of her childhood and school years to share with her grandchildren. Fellow club member Barb Moody plunged into the COVID crisis by making masks for those who needed them early-on when shortages were rampant. Her attention then turned to learning and teaching how Zoom could enable her mahjong groups to continue playing virtually. “With the help of mirrors and lots of practice, I also learned how to cut my own hair,” Moody added with a chuckle. With a COVID-19 vaccine on the near horizon, a return to the social interactions that were canceled or curtailed could happen again soon. And while Lakers have benefited from spending pandemic isolation in a pleasant environment — enjoying fresh air, clean water and sparkling sunshine — the return to a more normal summer season will be welcome.

A LOST W SEASON VENUES HAVE STRUGGLED TO STAY AFLOAT AMID A PANDEMIC THAT SEEMED PERFECTLY TIMED TO CRASH THE WEDDING SEASON story by K AREN DILLON

HEN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC hit in March, andVirginia Gov. Ralph Northam implemented restrictions on gatherings, wedding venues, including ones at the lake, felt the impact. “We lost March, April, May and the first two weeks in June because of the restrictions,” said Melba Seneff, of The Pavilion at BlackWater Junction. Built on a family farm in Union Hall, The Pavilion at BlackWater Junction opened in 2016 and features sweeping views of the countryside. Up to 200 guests can be seated inside the covered pavilion, which also includes a full kitchen, restrooms, a fireplace and a pizza oven. “We had a lot of brides who were pretty upset,” recalled Belle Garden Estate owner Isabelle Russell of the COVID-19 restrictions. Just off Virginia 116 in Wirtz, Belle Garden Estate’s 10-acre property features one of Franklin County’s oldest historic homes, along with a creek and mountain views. The property also includes an outdoor pavilion that can be used for receptions for up to 200 guests.

The COVID-19 pandemic was especially hard on wedding venues around the Lake. “We lost March, April, May and the first two weeks in June because of the restrictions,” said Melba Seneff, of The Pavilion at Black Water Junction (above). But there is optimisim for the coming year. Hunter Wray (right), the owner of Southern Smoke Co. said that while his bookings are still down, the trend is going up.

“When it first hit, it was extremely scary,” said Russell, who also owns Garden Rose Events and Design, a wedding planning, designing and consulting company. In those first few months of the pandemic, couples who were able to reschedule did, although Seneff said she had three couples who canceled completely. LikeSeneff,Russellhadmanycouples who rescheduled their weddings to the same time next year, which still amounts to a loss of income as the venue won’t be able to take any new reservations.“That’s a big hit for us,” Russell added. When contacted in mid-November, Russell said next year’s wedding season for her venue only had two Saturdays available. “We do have a lot of Sundays left,” she added. Even after restrictions on group gatherings were relaxed in June, venues still madesureprecautionsweretaken.AtThe Pavilion at Black Water Junction, Seneff said that included wearing masks, ensuringguestswhoweren’tinthesamehousehold were seated at socially distanced tables, and tasking caterers with wrapping utensils and serving in buffet lines. While the rules were outlined to couples in advance, Seneff said she didn’t stick around for each of the ceremonies or receptions at her place because, “I’m not the COVID police.” However, Seneff did follow up with couples afterward, and by all accounts, everything has gone well.“It has worked and as far as I know, no one has ever come down with COVID,” she said. At Belle Garden Estate, couples were given similar directives. “We definitely made sure we had hand sanitizer on every table, and masks and gloves for the caterers,” Russell said. Following each event, both Seneff and Russell said they made sure everything was thoroughly sanitized. And while the loss in business hasn’t been ideal during a year that was far from normal, these owners said they have tried to make the best of it by taking time to spruce up and expand their properties. “We actually got a lot of projects around here done,” Russell said.
BACK TO SMOKIN’ Caterer says business is slowly stabilizing HUNTER WRAY, THE 26-YEAR-OLD OWNER of Southern Smoke Co., a barbecue and catering business, was like a lot of folks who thought the COVID-19 pandemic would go away by last summer.
"At first, it didn't seem like it was that big of a deal," he recalled. That was until the business lost 17 of its already-booked weddings from March through June. Once restrictions on gatherings were lifted, Wray set to work implementing guidelines set forth by the Virginia Department of Health for catering events. That included having individually wrapped utensils and pre-packaged desserts, along with workers wearing masks and gloves at all times. Wray said he had to double the staff it normally takes to cater a wedding. "When we catered weddings it normally took three people," he said. "We were definitely putting in some hours." Food costs increased as well. "Although it didn't jump as much as lumber (in the home building industry), we definitely had a price increase," he added. However, the nearly five-year-old business has managed to persevere, and Wray said he sees the light at the end of the pandemic. He has already booked about 25 to 28 weddings, although that number is usually in the 30s around this time of year. "The trend and the mindset is definitely on the up," he said. "It can't last forever. And all the venues have been super good to deal with." While the pandemic has certainly been challenging for businesses like Wray's, he also feels for the couples who look forward to what is usually the happiest day of their lives. "You really only have one shot to make everything so perfect." — Karen Dillon

Dock Tale Hour
by KIMBERLY DALFERES
F
OR DECADES NOW, I’VE been somewhat addicted to the avalanche of home and garden television shows that have sprung up across the networks. Any time of day or night you can find a plethora of house porn that focuses on topics such as buying and selling homes, flipping property, remodeling and decorating, mega mansions versus tiny homes, big city apartment living, modern farmhouse lifestyle, choosing fixer uppers or move-in-ready abodes. These shows all have their schtick: vacation home bargain hunting, firsttime home buyers and reshaping a rundown small town one remodel at a time are all common tropes. I do love to watch the property transformations, but what really keeps me coming back to new episodes and reruns are the show hosts and the people they support and inspire. Take, for example, a show that follows individuals as they take on the adventure of moving to a foreign country. I’m fascinated by this reoccurring couple: she’s a beautiful yoga instructor who wants to open her own studio and offer classes on the beach, and he’s charming, tall, dark and handsome, who dreams of opening a tiki bar. They’re moving to a Caribbean island and their budget is a cool $2 million. Wait, what?! Where does a 30-something, working-class couple get that kind of cash? Did they win the lottery or rob a bank? I’ve also developed a keen eye for which couples are going to “make it.” I’m no relationship expert; I’m the polar opposite of a relationship expert. However, for these reality show couples, there are often bright red flags waving right in their faces. If she wants charming, quiet countryside, and he’s looking for a downtown crash pad near the bars and night life, they’re going to struggle. I’ve watched a guy proclaim to a real estate agent that they will need at least five bedrooms for his dreams of a big family, and his wife looks right into

Where the Heart Is
Home ownership is often a good metaphor for relationships — you can live with squeaks, but you better fix the leaks. the camera, raises an eyebrow and says, “Kids, that’s interesting.” This could certainly be made-for-TV drama, but it does not bode well for their future. These shows have helped me realize that houses and house hunting are often excellent metaphors for relationships and marriage. There are many insights and life lessons that can be gleaned from one’s housing choices. • All houses, and relationships, are quirky. Each is unique, each has its charms. There will be days when you love “it” with all your heart. There will be days when you want to set fire to it. • Sometimes it just comes down to what you can live with. You’re not
going to get rid of the entire house just because a door squeaks. • It’s amazing how often there are beautiful wood floors hiding under dingy carpet. Don’t let what’s visible scare you away from the beauty that can be just below the surface. • Small issues, not addressed, will almost always turn into bigger problems. It’s better to fix a dripping faucet, then to wait until the bathroom floods. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties. Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
