appy new year and welcome to a new decade, Smith Mountain Lake friends! While some of us (me) are scratching our heads and wondering where the time went, others are looking forward to embracing exciting new
opportunities. At long last, after months of waiting, we have your Best of SML Award winners in 74 different categories. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who took the time to vote for their favorites! If you’re planning your upcoming nuptials, don’t miss our feature about The Stables at the Virginian, the lake’s newest venue that features an upscale, western theme. There’s also our annual wedding guide, which offers listings of everything from caterers and chauffeurs to transportation and tuxedos. And if you have out-of-town friends and family visiting, our lodging guide can be handy for planning, too. If you’re one who likes to make resolutions at the beginning of each new year, check out Dock Tale Hour and get a new perspective that could turn out to be a fun way to look forward to the future. From all of us at Laker magazine, Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing you around the lake.

SHORELINES Home & Garden
Author Brie Arthur is at the vanguard of the “foodscaping” movement, which combines plants that are easy on the eye with ones you want to eat.
Edible Arrangements Story and Photography by catriona tudor erler
IT’S ALL IN THE GARDEN
Brie Arthur’s front garden in spring includes two beautiful swaths of emmer wheat intermingled with self-sown larkspur and poppies. Arthur is pioneering the idea of growing grains in the garden as both ornamental and edible plants.

e c e l e b r at e amber waves of grain in the stirring anthem “God Bless America,” but few people have celebrated those life-giving grains by growing them in their home gardens. Enter Brie Arthur, one of the people in the vanguard of the new movement to expand the palette of plants we grow, adding both the beauty and the benefits of edible crops, including grains, in our personal landscape. In a system Arthur calls “foodscaping,” ornamental trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials are mixed with edibles, including grain crops such as wheat, barley, oats, rye, corn, millet and sorghum. In her first book, “The Foodscape Revolution: Finding a Better Way to Make Space for Food and Beauty in Your Garden,” Arthur explains, “Inspired by Rosalind Creasy and her Edible Landscaping books, I set out to create a suburban yard that was both bountiful and beautiful despite
my tight budget and concerns about my homeowner’s association’s (HOA) covenants.” To her surprise a year after planting her first foodscape garden, she received her neighborhood’s Yard of the Year Award. “It was an empowering moment when I realized we can develop a balance between ornamentals and edibles and meet the landscape guidelines set by HOAs,” she wrote. When they’re grown among other garden plants, grains have a special beauty we overlook when they’re farmed en masse over acres of land. The seed heads of barley and wheat have an art deco pattern and tidiness about them that is extraordinarily beautiful. Amaranth and sorghum produce ornamental plumes that wave in the breeze. Implementing the techniques of foodscaping not only is a wonderful adventure in a new way to garden, it also carries many personal and environmental benefits. In Arthur’s case, she is able to grow of much

of the food her family needs, saving on her budget, as well as her peace of mind. She knows that the food she’s eating was grown without harmful chemicals and from seeds that have not been genetically engineered into a “Frankenfood.” “Ninety percent of the corn on the market is GEHR (Genetically Engineered for Herbicide Resistance),” Arthur said. To avoid that, grow your own. She adds that growing your own food “also reduces food miles (the measurement of the fuel it takes to transport food from a distant farm to the consumer) and makes the landscape a more biodiverse habitat for insects, birds, butterflies, turtles, frogs and mammals.” For those living at the lake where distances to shops are great, harvesting from your garden rather than the grocery store can save a lot of driving. It’s a win-win proposition.
Two Seasons, Year-Round Interest arthur manages her garden by changing plants twice a year in a cool season/warm season cycle. To prepare for the new season’s crops, she uses a gas mower with a spinning blade to down the leaves and
A PRIVATE EDEN
The “walls” of this private garden room are fruiting blueberry shrubs and rows of potted indeterminate tomatoes that grow tall and continue to fruit until frost cuts down the plants. The celosia growing in the fire pit will bloom in bright red “flames,” giving the effect of a fire on hot summer nights without the added heat. Emmer wheat, also known as farro, is an ancient grain that is prized for its low gluten content. It gives good yields even in poor soils, and is resistant to fungal diseases.

spent plants, including perennials, such as phlox, which self-sow every year. She leaves the chopped biomass in place to feed the soil. “I used to spend hours pulling out all the plants and hauling them away,” Arthur said. “Now I can do the job in 45 minutes.” As an added bonus, with all the left-behind organic material, her soil gets better every year. She may add a thin layer of mulch on top for the sake of looking tidy, but the new plants will be covering the ground in just a few weeks. Her cool season tasks begin around Thanksgiving when she adds an organic fertilizer to the soil to feed the soil microbes, thus resulting in healthier plants. She warns that using fast-acting products such as Miracle-Gro is like eating a Snickers bar. It provides quick energy, but no sustainable nourishment. When the soil is ready, she plants cool season greens and vegetables such as arugula, lettuce, kale, celery, beets and cabbage varieties. In December (Arthur lives near Raleigh, North Carolina — a climate not too different from ours) she plants barley, oats, wheat and rye intermingled with cool season flowers such as poppies, larkspur and nigella, which she also sows from seed. Those annuals will wait through winter and begin sprouting in time to blend attractively with the grains. Around mid-June, Arthur switches to warm season crops. After harvesting the grain seeds and mowing down and chopping up the plantings (with the mower) and adding organic fertilizer, she plants heat-loving crops such as rice, corn, sorghum, millet, sunflowers, sesame, okra, eggplants and other vegetables, including tomatoes, zinnias, cleome, cosmos, marigolds and coleus (to save money, she propagates her coleus from last year’s plants). Other beneficial plants to include are umbels — plants with umbrella-like, spreading flowers such as carrots, celery, cilantro, dill and fennel. These all are food for both people and pollinators. She edges her beds with plants that deer and other pests dislike. Deer avoid the pungent garlic odor and flavor; it also deters in-ground pests, such as moles and voles. Potatoes, arugula and dwarf basil are two bushy plants that look pretty in

What to Plant
Brie Arthur’s Best Plant Buddies Through trial and error, Arthur has discovered unexpected plant combinations that are both beautiful and mutually beneficial. Here are a few:
mahogany leaves and seed spikes of chartreuse edible rice) and ‘Carolina Gold’ (medium-grain rice that was a staple in South Carolina from the late 18th century).
• Tomatoes with Callicarpa americana (our native beautyberry): The beautyberry is an excellent support to the tomatoes, and the eye-catching purple berries in fall extend the garden season.
• Buckwheat and Agastache foenicalum (anise hyssop): The buckwheat blooms early with white and pink flowers. Both are excellent plants for pollinators.
• Blueberries with Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower): Arthur’s preferred blueberry is ‘Powder Blue’, which produces medium-sized, firm, flavorful fruit.
• Barley and Baptisia australis (false indigo): Arthur calls barley the queen of all the grains because of its beautiful upright stalks.
• Sorghum bicolor with Joe Pye weed and sunflowers: Arthur recommends planting this tallgrowing combination at the back of the border.
• Emmer aka farro wheat and Phlox paniculata ‘Bright Eyes’ (garden phlox): Emmer is an ancient wheat strain that is lower in glucose than modern forms. Arthur explains that modern wheat has 42 chromosomes, a lot for bodies to digest.
• Rice and Fothergilla: Arthur recommends upland rice varieties that do not require saturation such as ‘Black Madras’ (dusky, deep
• Corn ‘Glass Gem’ with butterfly week (Aesclepias tuberosa), blue flase indigo (Baptisia australis), Phlox and Salvia

the garden, but also deter deer and rabbits. (Arthur grows more than 100 pounds of potatoes along a foundation landscape edge. When she harvests the tubers, she leaves the smallest ones in the ground for next year’s crop. She is never without homegrown, organically raised potatoes.) The larkspur that makes the garden an enchanting place to be in the cool season time of the garden also is poisonous to deer. If you have enough of it on your property, she said, they’ll stay away. BEAUTIFUL AND TASTY
Hardy banana with larkspur (top); Garden Tower® with tomatoes (center left); artichokes are tasty and pretty; and potato (bottom) makes an excellent edging plant.
One of Arthur’s favorite summer crops is tomatoes. She grows hundreds of plants, most heirloom varieties you won’t find in grocery stores. One of her favorites is ‘Cream Sausage’, a bush variety that fruits prolifically all at once. The 3-inch-long, sausage-shaped fruit has an ivory-yellow skin and a sweet, yet slightly tangy, acidic flavor that Arthur calls “incredible.” Her preferred tomato seed source is Seeds by Design, which sells improved heirlooms selected for disease resistance and good fruiting. She tucks the tomatoes in the garden borders, grows them in special planting towers and uses rows of indeterminate varieties growing in pots as portable walls to screen parts of the garden. By early August, she has hundreds of pounds of tomatoes, which she serves at an annual Tomato Tasting Fundraiser party she hosts in her garden. Her guests consume gallons of Bloody Marys mixed with freshly harvested heirloom tomato juice; pounds of bacon, lettuce and heirloom tomato sandwiches; and pizzas topped with homemade, garden-grown tomato sauce and homegrown basil pesto. Although her garden is not without some work, Arthur has developed techniques to make it efficient and she still has time to write books, entertain and enjoy other aspects of life. Her reward for her time spent cultivating garden is a bounty of edibles that are beautiful, as well as nutritious.

Napoli Cowboy Gives Back
A good time was had by all as Brad Eames (Executive Chef) Best Chef of SML and Ray (Ray Ray) Wilson (Sous Chef) churned out many dishes for all to enjoy. While Melanie and Ashlee turned out the drinks from behind the bar, Andrea, Michael, Dexter and Keifer took orders, ran food and cleared tables.
On Dec. 3, Napoli Cowboy Restaurant held its second annual Anniversary/Customer Appreciation/Toys for Tots Drive. The first year 367 toys were collected with a goal of raising 500 toys this year. To the restaurant’s surprise, the Marines informed them there were 631 toys collected. The Toys for Tots Coordinator Sgt. Irving Alvarez was assisted by Sgt. Tofstad, HM2 Gordon and two local elves, Chalis and Chanlin Philips. As Ray and Sue Wilson greeted each person arriving, the Toys for Tots Team collected the toys and placed them on and around the stage. Everyone received a raffle ticket for each toy donated. Then guests were free to enjoy an array of culinary delights and tasty drinks from their mixologists, while listening to the duo, Entwined. At the end of the event, raffle tickets were drawn and 71 items were given out. The final three were pairs of airline tickets, won by Rusty Smith, Sam Hurt and Joyce Spencer. Napoli Cowboy thanks The Willard Companies, AllCore360, YMCA, Performance Food Group (PFG), US Foods, Dale Wilson, Danville Distributing, Valley Distributing, Robin Cellars, The Harvester, Capps, Hot Shots, Alease Dudley and Christy Aud for their contributions to raffle prizes.

Napoli Cowboy in its two years of being open has proven to be a major contributor to the local community, from supporting Dudley Elementary cheerleaders to many other groups and causes. They have been featured on three television stations and numerous periodicals. The food and service speak for themselves, a testament to why it received so many Best of SML awards. Everyone makes you feel like part of the family from the moment you meet the hostess to everyone you meet during your dining experience.

tracy sisson is pretty sure she can help you feel better. A personal trainer with more than 30 years of fitness industry experience, Sisson is the owner of Body Shoppe Fitness near Westlake Corner. When her family moved to the lake area four years ago, she brought her expertise to a new fitness home. With a bright, comfortable space clients can work, privately or in a small group setting, toward their personal fitness goals. In the past year, Sisson has added a new element to studio’s offerings with the purchase of an AllCore360 machine, which allows her clients to concentrate on the muscles at the very core of their bodies. “Your core is everything,” Sisson said, “your abdominals, your low back, your side muscles and all the little muscles that support your spine.” Core muscles start

They are responsible for posture and balance, as well as strength, and a stronger core has benefits for a whole range of activities. The AllCore360 machine was developed by a chiropractor, Dr. Scott Bertrand, following his own painful rehabilitation from a spinal cord injury. It is designed to offer clients, at any level of fitness, the chance to engage and strengthen more than 50 different core muscles through isometric contractions. When Sisson learned about the AllCore360 machine, she said she knew that it would be a good fit for the popula-
tion at Smith Mountain Lake. “I thought we had the right people,” Sisson said. “Adults who are super active: they’re still playing tennis, playing pickleball. They like to play golf, they’re paddle boarding, they kayak, they bike, and they want to continue to do those things.” Core strength, she said, makes all of these activities easier and more enjoyable. “All movement either starts in your core or passes through it,” Sisson added. “If your core is more stable and more balanced, then your movements are more effortless while producing the same outcome.” Another benefit is that the machine

works for all fitness levels. “You don’t even have to be a regular exerciser to use it and reap the benefits,” Sisson said. “Because the workout is customized for each individual, the AllCore360 has a positive impact on the fitness levels of everyone from sedentary individuals to professional athletes.” Altogether, a workout session on the AllCore360 takes just minutes to complete. “It’s so non-invasive in your life,” Sisson said. “It takes 10 minutes. You can do it in your street clothes. People come in, they do their 10-minute session, and they’re out.” Atlanta’s Shepherd Center was the first to get the AllCore360. There, the machine helps with the rehabilitation of patients recovering from severe spinal injuries. Clemson University has also installed an AllCore360 as part of its training regimen for athletes. Two other machines are in Virginia — one in Charlottesville and another in Harrisonburg. To get an idea of how the machine

works and what it can offer, Sisson offers three free sessions to clients. As a follow-up after that, she recommends that clients come in three times a week for the initial three-month program. Many of Sisson’s clients have recently made their 100th ride on the machine. In the year that Body Shoppe Fitness has offered the AllCore360, more than 3,000 rides have been completed, she said, with many regulars using it as much as three times per week. This attests to the versatility of the workout, as well as its efficacy. “Everybody’s a little bit different,” Sisson said. “They’re all here for a different reason. We have some folks who have had multiple back surgeries, spinal fusions, and traditional core training is painful, it’s prohibitive, they just can’t do it. It just becomes a perpetual, ‘I have pain so I can’t move, I don’t move because I have pain,’ and it gets worse.” The benefit for Sisson is hearing clients talk about how diminished their pain is. “It’s wonderful when somebody can perform a little bit better or hit the golf ball a little bit further, but when somebody comes in and hasn’t been sleeping well for a couple of years because they have pain? And now that’s gone? That’s pretty serious,” she said. “That’s the good stuff right there.”

fter years of planning and preparation, one of the lake’s newest wedding and conference venues is now open for business. Nestled on 41 acres near Westlake Corner on Brooks Mill Road, The Stables at the Virginian is a custom-built, two-story space with an upscale western vibe. “It’s too grand to be referred to as a barn,” said Rachael Strain, event manager of The Stables. “It’s a destination wedding venue,” said owner/manager Jackie Baker, who, along with Strain, is a certified wedding and event planner and lifetime member of The Bridal Society, an international society of wedding planners. Baker, a retired registered nurse, and her partner, Mike Boyd, a practicing physician, who manages business affairs for The Stables, envisioned the venue to be a central part of the lake area. “We really are about the community,” Baker said, adding that she hopes to host community events there as well. The venue’s style originated from Boyd’s love of cowboys and western culture, including abiding by what’s known as “The Code of the West,” as well as the couple’s shared values of “integrity, honesty and character.” “The Code of the West is the personal character and principles you live by, and a great way to approach busi-

With a vision for what The Stables would look like, the couple enlisted the help of Eric Buck of Comprehensive Home Design to create blueprints. From there, Dennis Cooper of Cooper Contractors helped make their dream a reality. Dock Tale Hour
H
ere’s something i find curious: as we celebrate the birth of each new year, instead of marking the occasion with birthday wishes, we proclaim resolutions. Why is this? How did the torture of resolutions to be declared and forgotten get its start? I did a little research surfing, and it turns out that historians attribute the ritual of the New Year’s resolution to the Babylonians. Way back over 4,000 years ago, during a 12-day celebration called Akitu, it was the tradition to make promises to the gods (resolutions), pay your debts and return anything you might have borrowed throughout the previous year. I wonder why all the elements of this custom didn’t stick? I’ve got a few cake plates I’d like to see back in my kitchen, and I really do need to take back the leaf blower to neighbor John. Don’t you think making wishes on New Year’s Eve would be so much more enjoyable than resolutions? Resolutions always seem to denote some need for improvement: lose weight, get a better job, eat healthier, quit smoking. All good intentions, but each requires serious followup and commitment. On the other hand, wishes are fun! You can gleefully put wishes out into the universe, and expect the universe to pick up the tasker and move forward. The birthday is the big wish magnet. There are, however, other occasions when making a wish is encouraged: wish upon a falling star; make a wish when you place an eyelash on the back of your hand and blow; declare a wish if a ladybug lands upon you; the ever-popular snapping of the poultry wishbone; and of course my personal favorite, the making of a wish when one discovers a four-leaf clover (shout out to my Irish kinfolk). During my recent Googling, I also discovered that, in fact, a Spanish good luck practice is to eat a grape and make a wish during each of the 12 strikes of the clock at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Brilliant tradition! The birth of a new year is the perfect

time to make a few “birthday” wishes, resolutions be damned. So, here are some of my wishes, from me to you and beyond. I wish someone would come pack up and put away all my Christmas decorations. I wish great fun and joy to all you 20-, 30- and 40-somethings out there. Live it up, because in your 50s, that check engine light is going to come on. I read this on a T-shirt; genius insight. I wish I understood the movie “Interstellar.” It seems like a great concept, but I just don’t get it.
I wish I had one more day with my grandparents. I wish we could entice some foodies and restauranteurs to open more restaurants here at Smith Mountain Lake. Because unless you love Mexican food, it’s a bit of a gastronomic desert here. And, of course, I wish peace on Earth, goodwill to all. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties. Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
