Whether you’re going for rustic charm or fairytale elegance, there are planners, caterers, event spaces and photographers for every dream and every budget at the lake. Check out our Laker Wedding section beginning on page 56.
appy New Year, Laker friends! It’s hard to believe that another year has passed, but as my dad used to say, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” No sentiment is more true than living here at Smith Mountain Lake. On page 36, meet Ken Hitchcock and Sue Halloran, one of those couples who are doing just that — having fun in their retirement — while making beautiful music together. Speaking of music, did you vote for your favorite music venue and your favorite band, among other favorites on our Best of SML Awards ballot? We have the winners in all 75 categories starting on page 42. Also, being that this is our wedding issue, we meet some newlyweds who used the backdrop of Smith Mountain Lake to make their day extraordinarily special. Finally, would you believe that we’re already looking forward to summer? It’s true. And if you have any story suggestions for us, we’d love to hear from you. Just drop us an email to editor@ smithmountainlaker.com.

As non-native plant species spread, they can choke off local flora and hurt wildlife. Lake gardeners can do their part by identifying and stopping a few common interlopers in their tracks. Story and Photography by catriona tudor erler

nvasive plants are species introduced into a region where they don’t belong. Typically they grow and mature rapidly, are highly successful in seed production and germination, and outcompete native species by colonizing rapidly. In the process, they displace native and introduced plant species that do no harm, thus reducing wildlife habitat. According to a report written for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, about 3 percent of Virginia flora is considered invasive. As responsible citizens and good stewards of the land, we can all play a part in helping to contain invasive species at Smith Mountain Lake, both in our gardens and in the wild woods. Among plants that are a no-no both in the garden and in the wild are the following:
Bradford Pear (Pyrus Calleryana ‘Bradford’) Introduced to the market in 1960s, by the 1990s Bradford pears became the ubiquitous street tree throughout America. With its beautiful spring flowers, rich green summer foliage, and its crimson, maroon and orange autumn foliage, it was hailed as a botanical wonder. That is until people realized it had problems. Billed as a small ornamental tree, over time people realized that it actually can grow to 50 feet tall and wide with a dense canopy that prevents anything from

growing underneath. Add to that, the frothy white flowers stink, the wood is brittle, breaking easily in windy storms, and it is an escape artist. The spring flowers give way to an abundance of seedy berries that the birds feast on — and then spread the seeds in their droppings. These germinate readily in any soil, whether wet or dry, poor or rich, acidic or alkaline. It has become a horticultural marauder and is considered a weed in 19 states, including Virginia. Cut down your Bradford pears and save the timber, which makes excellent firewood. Native trees that are good substitutes include serviceberry, which has beautiful white flowers followed by fruit that wildlife feed on; redbud, which flowers in vivid pink at the time the pears bloom; Carolina silverbell, which is a delicate and charming tree featuring drooping clusters of bellshaped white flowers in April; and sourwood, which has white, lily-of-the-valley-like flowers in early summer and crimson fall foliage.
Oriental Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) Once prized by flower arrangers for the winged orange fruit, conservation-conscious floral designers are now refusing to use Oriental bittersweet in their arrangements, and it’s banned by many garden clubs. Since the East Asian native was introduced to this country around 1860 as an ornamental, it has invaded

woodlands of the eastern half of the country. The deciduous, twining and climbing woody vine can reach up to 60 feet or more in height and 4 inches in diameter. These aggressive vines are destructive to any host tree or shrub. They can kill even large trees by encircling, girdling and shading them. In addition, often the victim trees become so weighed down by the vine that their limbs snap off, especially in high winds or when covered with heavy snow and ice. The plants reproduce prolifically. Hundreds of clusters of fruit capsules grow on the vine. When ripe, the capsules split open to reveal three colorful bright red arils that enclose the seeds. Therein lies the problem. Birds eat them, passing the seeds through their digestive system, thus distributing them to spawn new bittersweet plants. Without birds, this plant still spreads profligately. Most seeds germinate, and it’s not uncommon for the ground under a parent plant to become a tangle of bittersweet vines, in as little as a year. Considered bird junk food, these berries are a desperation winter food, providing little nourishment but filling their hungry bellies. The birds would be far better off with native berries.
Any Oriental (or Asian) bittersweet should be removed, including the roots. All plant material should be put in the trash, not the compost. Otherwise new plants will generate from living plant pieces.
Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) A popular garden plant for its colorful foliage, red berries that persist through winter and deer proof properties, sadly Japanese barberry is not good for the environment. Birds enjoy the berries, but then proceed to distribute them throughout the forests, where they germinate. If you see rogue Japanese barberry plants growing where they shouldn’t be, hand-pull the young plants before they produce berries, preferably before July. For more mature plants, use a weed wrench, a long-handled tool that gives you leverage and provides distance between you and the thorny stems. As a last resort, cut the plant down to the stump and apply a glyphosate herbicide (Roundup is the most well-known brand) to the freshly cut stumps in between July and mid-September. Use a paint brush or sponge applicator to control the spread of the hazardous material.
Bradford pears (left) are ubiquitous in the United States, but not native. Their dense canopy can block out sunlight to plants underneath and their brittle wood makes them a hazard in high winds. Sourwoods (right) make a good alternative.

Japanese Barberry (top) are lovely and deer-proof, but sadly not good for the local environment. Autumn Olive (above) was introduced to bolster wildlife habitats and aid in mine reclamation, but its sheer hardiness has made it one of the most troublesome shrubs in the country.
Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) The introduction of autumn olive to the United States is a case of good intentions gone awry. According to The Nature Conservancy, autumn olive has become one of the most troublesome shrubs in the central and eastern U.S. High seed production, high germination rates and the sheer hardiness allows the autumn olive to grow and spread rapidly. Autumn olive was introduced to the country from Japan and China in 1830. Originally it was planted for wildlife habitat, shelterbelts and mine reclamation, but it has escaped cultivation and become an invasive pest. It adapts well to varying water, soil and temperature conditions and the resilient seeds survive animal stomach digestive juices and are scattered in their droppings. The germination rate is quick and high. Pruning or simply cutting back plants does not have any effect on these olives; they resprout heartily from the root stumps. Burning also is ineffective. They are fire-resistant and tend to colonize burned areas. Your best bet is to remove all plant material, including the roots. If you don’t have time to tackle the job, at least trim off the ripening fruit to prevent further spread.
Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) Despite its name, the tree-of-heaven is no angel. It was first introduced into the United States in the Philadel-

phia area in 1784. Initially valued as an urban street tree and widely planted in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas, it has since spread and become a common invasive plant. Here at the lake you can see it mingling with the native trees in our forests. Aggressively invasive, female trees have the potential to produce more than 300,000 seeds annually. These are wind-dispersed. Established trees also spread by sending up root suckers that may emerge as far as 50 feet from the parent tree. A cut or injured ailanthus tree may send up dozens of root sprouts, each of which can produce more seeds within as little as two years. Expert survivors, the trees produce allelopathic chemicals in their leaves, roots and bark that can limit or prevent the establishment of other plants. Tree-of-heaven grows almost anywhere except in deep shade. It quickly will colonize disturbed areas, taking advantage of forests defoliated by insects or impacted by wind and other disturbances. Due to its extensive root system and resprouting ability, tree-of-heaven is difficult to control. Treatment timing and follow-up the second year are critical to success. Mechanical methods, such as cutting or mowing, are ineffective, as the tree responds by producing large numbers of stump sprouts and root suckers. When cutting tree-of-heaven, treat with an herbicide first, allow 30 days for it to take effect and then cut. Hand-pulling young seedlings is effective when the soil is moist and the entire root system is removed. Small root fragments are capable of generating new shoots. Seedlings can be easily confused with root suckers, which are nearly impossible to pull by hand. Target the roots with systemic herbicides applied in mid- to late summer (July to onset of fall color) when the tree is moving carbohydrates to the roots. Herbicide applications made outside this late growing season window will only injure aboveground growth. If the tree trunk is less than 6 inches in diameter, applying herbicide around the base of the trunk can help kill the tree. Use a low-volume backpack sprayer to direct a concentrated mixture of herbicide containing the ester formulation of triclopyr in oil. Spray completely around the trunk from the ground line to a height of 12 to 18 inches. To maximize translocation to the roots, apply herbicides from mid- to late summer. Timing is important. Otherwise treatment will provide shoot injury, but little control of the roots. Well-established tree-of-heaven stands are only eliminated through repeated efforts and monitoring. Initial treatments often only reduce the root systems, making follow-up measures necessary. Persistence is the key to success. Several native trees and shrubs, such as sumac, ash and black walnut, resemble tree-of-heaven foliage. You can tell if it’s a tree-of-heaven by the fuzzy, reddish brown twigs, clusters of light green seed pods and its distinctive, unpleasant smell.

lot can happen in a year. Just ask Ray and Sue Wilson, owners of Napoli Cowboy, which recently celebrated its first anniversary. “We served over 300 meals on opening night, Nov. 18, 2017,” Ray said. “Nearly 45,000 customers have given us the privilege of serving them food and drink since,” Sue added. While its physical location is at the corner of Burnt Chimney and Lovely Valley roads, the restaurant’s slogan, “Where the taste of Texas and Italy collide,” could be what keeps patrons coming back. Steve Sheema is a weekly Napoli regular. “This is a neighborhood-type place,” said Sheema, who retired to Smith Mountain Lake 10 years ago. “Terrific food and drinks, friendly staff, people thoroughly enjoying themselves. I love coming here — sometimes with friends, sometimes alone. Doesn’t matter.” Seated at the restaurant’s horseshoe-shaped bar, Sheema was about to dive into Napoli’s Sunday Sauce, a dish of pork, veal and beef meatballs and Italian sausage in tomato sauce served over a mound of spaghetti. “The atmosphere here reminds me of the bar at ‘Cheers,’” he said, referring to the classic TV situationcomedy. The Wilsons’ goal was to make Napoli Cowboy a “family place.” To begin with, that’s literally true. Sonin-law Brad Eames serves as executive chef, daughter Melanie is front-end manager overseeing customers’ dining experiences and son Ray-Ray serves as sous chef. Eames’ culinary team, including Tony Muccino, Brian Fairweather, Alec Bosko and mother-son pair Tammy and Ronnie Hodges, smokes all the meats on

Today, Napoli Cowboy has 35 employees, several of them related to another staff member. “We treat them all like family, and we insist that they treat customers the same way,” Ray said. “It makes for a happy workplace and satisfied customers. Hardly a day goes by that someone doesn’t come in hoping to land a job here.” The restaurant is open for dinner on Mondays, lunch and dinner Thursdays and Fridays, and offers breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays, too. “We’re closed Tuesday and Wednesday, for recuperation,” Ray joked. More realistically, days off are rare. “We’re often here for deliveries and restocking, for heavy cleaning and for weekly family meetings to discuss how things are going and decide on upcoming specials,” Sue said. Specials are chosen to suit a variety of tastes, such as pasta and beef and seafood, including salmon, haddock, grouper, sea bass and a spicy Texas shrimp bread bowl. In addition to Sunday Sauce, regular dinner items include Texas pork ribs, steaks, burgers, firecracker shrimp and fried oyster appetizers, lasagna and housemade pizzas. “Everything on the menu is made from scratch, with fresh ingredients,” Eames said. “We won’t have it any

other way.” While the restaurant has been open for a little more than a year, it took six months to create it. “The building we bought was in need of some serious TLC, and almost everything inside was broken,” Ray said. “Brad, Mel and Ray-Ray quit their jobs and moved to SML to become laborers, carpenters and painters for the renovation. They tried cleaning the kitchen and soon decided it had to be gutted and redone — new stoves, new refrigeration, new exhaust hoods, new everything.” In the dining room, the ceiling was replaced, walls were torn down, floors were refinished and the restrooms were remodeled. “It’s basically an all-new old place. And we have approval to open adjacent outdoor seating with an entertainment stage for the coming season and hope to eventually attach a 100-seat banquet room that will also handle restaurant overflow as needed,” Ray said. “Our family loves this community, and so many of our customers are now like extended family to us.”

She sang radio and TV advertising jingles for well-known companies — Red Lobster, Ford, AT&T and Dunkin’ Donuts — and toured the world as one-third of the all-female vocal trio, String of Pearls. “I was terrified of retirement,” Sue said. “I loved my working life — I didn’t want to give it up.” Ken Hitchcock, Sue’s husband of 32 years and also a musician, grew up in Northern Virginia listening to his grandfather dabble on piano, sax and bassoon. He was especially attracted to the sax as he listened to his grandfather’s collection of Stan Getz records. At age 12, Ken started playing sax and credits his high school band director and a private teacher for inspiring him. His high school’s Jazz Lab won numerous festivals, and he often won best soloist awards. Talent combined with practice led to acceptance to the three top American conservatories. “My parents never had to force me to practice; I loved playing,” he said. In 1974, Juilliard accepted only one saxophone player: Ken Hitchcock. Ken chose Juilliard because he wanted to study with Joe Allard. “All the greatest sax players in New York had studied with him,” Ken said. Plus, he reasoned, studying in New York City would be great for finding nighttime gigs to help pay college expenses and that might lead to fulltime work there. “Making contacts in the New York music scene while in college couldn’t hurt.” Ken’s first job out of college was a six-week tour with a 30-piece orchestra accompanying Diana Ross. He also did a yearlong tour with Gerry Mulligan’s big band, scoring his first of three Grammy Awards (the others were with Steely Dan and Machito).

ken hitchcock’s first job out of college was touring with Diana Ross. He’s played for everyone from Aretha Franklin to Sting and became a regular with several long-running Broadway shows. Next he joined Louie Bellson’s big band, which he played in for 30 years. During 1980, he simultaneously played with Buddy Rich’s band as well. After several exhausting years of performing “on the road,” Ken began subbing with Broadway show orchestras and eventually became a regular with numerous Tony Award-winning hits, including “Sweet Charity,” “Damn Yankees,” “City of Angels” and “Chicago,” among others. In 1983 Ken joined Liza Minnelli’s band and toured the world. That stint led to Rat Pack tours with Minnelli, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., which opened the door to concerts and recording with a list of stars that included Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Sting, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder and The Allman Brothers. “Remember when Studio 54 was New York’s hot club for music and dancing? Actually, the Red Parrot was much bigger than Studio 54, and all the stars came in after their own performances,” Ken recalled. “It had live music from 11 until 1:30, alternating between disco and big band swing each half-hour. That late hour timing let me play an earlier gig or a Broadway show and dash to the Red Parrot to join the band there.” It was at the Red Parrot that Ken met Sue. The two dated for about four years before marrying in 1987. When they began discussing places to retire, Sue wanted a lake and Ken wanted to pursue his love of golf. After deciding that Lake Tahoe was too cold, the couple explored lakes in New Hampshire and worked their way south. A couple of musician friends from Roanoke told them to look at Smith Mountain Lake. “We made two trips to Smith Mountain Lake,” Sue said. “Some of the homes seemed pretty remote — quite a shock for someone used to city living. On the second trip, I was thumbing through Laker magazine while riding in the realtor’s car. I saw the events listing and was just blown away. There was so much going on. It seemed like you would never be bored here.
Sue Halloran and Ken Hitchcock have been performing together for more than three decades. Married in 1987, they retired to the lake where they still continue to record and perform.

I wouldn’t be living here if it weren’t for what I saw in the Laker.” The couple has been equally impressed with the music and arts scene at SML. Since moving here, Ken and Sue have met and performed with numerous talented musicians. “The musicians we’ve met and played with here are way beyond what we expected,” Ken said. “Every band is New York caliber.” Bands Ken has played with include Hoppie Vaughan & the Ministers of Soul, Lenny Marcus Trio, Let’s Dance and Sway Katz big bands and the Jefferson Choral Society Orchestra. “In our first year here we found Aaron Garber, a brilliant musician and music director at Trinity Ecumenical Parish,” Sue said. “With Aaron, we introduced Trinity to jazz worship services.” Sue also competed in the Smith Mountain Lake Idol competition and performed in plays by Lake Players.
Ken and Sue have performed at area jazz festivals, and Ken gives private lessons on woodwind instruments. He also practices on his instruments for hours daily. “It’s a treat to have my own practice room in our house, unlike living in a New York high-rise where you worry about disturbing neighbors,” he said. Both stay active — Ken with golf and Sue with pickleball, her newest passion. She also teaches group exercise at the Franklin County Family YMCA at Lakewatch and, in the summer, water aerobics at The Waterfront. Like many folks they’ve met at the lake, Ken and Sue also use their talents to give back — providing worship service music regularly with Garber; entertaining residents at Runk and Pratt Senior Living Communities; and presenting “Beauty and the Beast” and “Peter and the Wolf” to children at Trinity’s preschool and Dudley Elementary School. “Retiring to SML is absolutely wonderful,” Halloran concluded.

Emily Peterson and Chris Borleis said “We do!” on the dock of her parents’ Mountain View Shores home in September. RIGHT White
lights and lush natural greenery adorn the lake home for the wedding.

Married E
ver since I can remember, I’ve known I wanted to get married at the lake,” Emily Peterson said. Her mother, Nancy, explained that the family had moved several times, but the one constant in their lives was the lake house they purchased in 2000. The family’s time at the lake always felt like “coming home,” even though it was a weekend getaway until Nancy and husband Rick moved there full time in 2017. By then the children had left the nest, but loved coming back. The couple met three years earlier working at a behavioral health hospital. Emily worked in lean transformation and Chris in information technology. Sharing Emily’s passion for the outdoors, Chris fell in love with the lake the first time he visited, so the wedding site was a natural fit for both. The date was set for the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, but with lots of pending home projects, they weren’t sure the house would be ready. A new garage was to be built; the dock needed re-decking and a replacement roof; the boathouse needed painting; craftsman accents were to be added to house and dock; the yard needed to be re-landscaped. All those projects were supposed to be finished by May 20, but what had started with a five-person work crew somehow had dwindled to just one.
AT T H E L A K E
For Emily Peterson, getting married at the lake was more than a nice idea — it was her lifelong dream. Story by ferne hale Photography courtesy of SARAH SEKALY PHOTOGRAPHY

We do! 2019 GUIDE
“There was work being done until the day before (the wedding),” Nancy said. “It was a whirlwind.” The parents managed the transformation of the house while Emily planned the entire wedding and reception. She organized everything into an Excel spreadsheet — invitations, the florist, a DJ, the videographer, her bridesmaids’ hair, makeup and dresses, guests’ lodging, the cake, a bar and liquor, food, a tent, port-a-potties — she just checked the boxes as details were finalized. Meanwhile Chris provided moral support, managed the DJ playlist details and finalized plans for the honeymoon. Emily had already shown her creative side when she remodeled her Pittsburgh house in HGTV-style, tearing down walls and getting it ready for re-sale. The wedding would be no different, attending to every personal touch. Save-the-date cards and invitations were handmade; runners and floral table arrangements were handcrafted; menu cards were personalized with the Borleis emblem; a poem tree with her favorite authors’ love quotes was set up. Lights would adorn almost every surface in true fairytale fashion, including the dock and backdrop, which was draped with white linens. To top it off, she even made her own wedding gown. The groom’s dinner was a private charter aboard the Virginia Dare for about 35 guests. Eighty-six people attended the wedding and reception,

and all but two families stayed in the same neighborhood. “We have incredible neighbors in Mountain View Shores,” Nancy said. “People would say, ‘I have two bedrooms you can use.’ Our next door neighbor offered use of their entire home as a wedding gift. Chris’ family was all in one house, and we rented another house for the groomsmen, so everyone was close by. Most everyone on the street came to the wedding.” One special aspect of the day was its casual nature. The bridesmaids had their hair and makeup done at the house, so there was time to lounge on the porch swing and just hang out. Rick took the groomsmen to Mitchell’s Point Marina for lunch. When the boat returned, another family member took nieces and nephews out for a ride on the lake. The ceremony was due to begin at 4:30 p.m., but was delayed as rain began to fall. As Emily noticed a break in the clouds, she moved everyone into their places. When the wedding began, Emily was escorted by Rick down stone steps to the Beatles’ “Something.” Chairs had been set up on the fire pit patio for immediate family, while other guests watched from under the deck of the home. The bridal party, including the couple’s dog, Kale, processed to the dock where Nancy’s brother-in-law, Bill Korpman, a certified officiant, presided over the ceremony. A cordless microphone was hooked up to allow guests to hear the ceremony. In the middle of the ceremony, thunder began to rumble again. Emily, laughing in the middle of her vows at the ominous growl, knew they’d have to wrap it up quickly. The rain came just as the couple finished taking photos. Everyone gathered under the clear-roofed tent for a catered reception. The tent also had Edison lights around it, which made it seem starlit. Additional rope lights wound around trees, and a cascade of lights fell behind the bar to complete the festive atmosphere. The caterer used the Petersons’ kitchen to prepare a dinner of shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles, as well as a meat carving station. For appetizers, Emily selected soft pretzels with an assortment of dipping sauces. The pretzels hung from a stand she had made so guests could serve themselves. Dessert included miniature apple and peach pies and donuts. There also was a small wedding cake that artistically showed the “V” of the dam, which had been the backdrop for the ceremony. After the reception, as Chris, Emily and pup Kale left, guests lined their path holding sparklers for them to walk through, showering in light. “My long-term desire to be married at the lake resulted in a really special occasion for Chris and me, my family and for all of our guests,” Emily said. “Despite the rain, it just couldn’t have been better.

hether a couple’s vision of the perfect wedding is a small, casual affair, a rustic, country event or a larger, more formal one, hiring a wedding photographer is one of the most important elements of a successful wedding day. The love and commitment between a bride and a groom on their special day will be captured in photographs that will create lasting memories for years to come. Booking a wedding venue is the first priority because it can influence both the style of the wedding and the selection of a photographer. Fortunately, there are many venues at Smith Mountain Lake. For an intimate, on-water wedding, holding a ceremony on the dock of a lakefront home is an ideal, budget-friendly choice. Rustic farm and barn venues, which are now trendy, are plentiful, too. Another option is renting a house on the lake for a week and holding the wedding ceremony and reception at a nearby vineyard. There also are venues that offer couples the option to have a more formal wedding. Once the venue is booked, it’s time to select the photographer. Smith Mountain Lake is home to many skilled wedding photographers.
Nicole Colwell of Nicole Colwell Photography, who has photographed about 200 weddings over the last five years, describes the photographer’s job as “telling the story of the couple’s day.” The photos, she said, “are the visual heirlooms of the wedding.” One of Colwell’s favorite nearby wedding sites is Sundara in Boones Mill, which features ideal photo settings, such as a wooden swing, a natural mountain backdrop, a gazebo overlooking a small stream and a rustic fire pit. A Fourth of July wedding held in the backyard of a house at SML is among the on-water weddings that Colwell fondly remembered. “Once the ceremony and reception were over, the wedding party enjoyed the annual fireworks display on the lake,” she said. When asked what her favorite wedding venue is, Heather Turner of Heather Turner Photography said she loves Old Mill Farm in Bedford. “It offers gorgeous grounds, great staff and diverse photo opportunities in one location, including sunsets in big fields, gardens and barns and beautiful chandeliers,” she said. Turner also likes taking engagement photos at Booker T. Washington National Monument, a rustic and easily-accessible site. On the other end of the wedding photography spec-

trum is Jenny Marie of Jenny Marie’s Photographie. She offers a youthful perspective in her photography, describing it as “fairytale vintage, with lots of color.” As a skilled photographer who is building her wedding photography credentials, Marie is willing to work within a couple’s budget, even if it is fairly modest. When Jessica Bohn Bishop married her husband, Keith, at Smith Mountain Lake in 2012, budget was paramount. She wanted to spend most of the wedding budget on a DJ and food for the couple’s 385 guests. Because Jessica grew up in Moneta in Bedford County and Keith spent his youth in Chatham, booking Parkway Marina as their wedding venue was a natural fit. “I wanted to hold an evening wedding under the trees with gorgeous sunset views across the lake,” Bishop recalled. “Mine was a do-it-yourself-wedding; my mother even made the wedding cake, and I decorated the venue the day of the wedding.” After reviewing portfolios of several photographers and getting word-of-mouth recommendations, Bishop decided on Tiffany Maxfield Photography, now located in Washington, D.C. “We took some photos in my wedding gown in front of the three crosses on Billy Tuck’s farm,” she recalled. “But my favorite wedding photo is of my wedding dress hanging on the door of Granddad Bennie Bohn’s cabin.”

Here are some tips that photographers and brides offered to ensure couples get their dream wedding photographs: Research: Spend time looking at wedding albums on Pinterest, Wedding Wire, Facebook, Instagram and The Knot to determine the types of photos that are desired. Experience: How much experience does the photographer have shooting weddings? If a photographer has worked weddings at the couple’s selected venue, she will be familiar with the best time of day, best angles and locations on the property to capture those perfect pictures. Take a look at online reviews on Wedding Wire of photographers under consideration. Recommendations of friends: If a friend has fabulous wedding photos, find out how easy it was to work with the photographer. But don’t limit the search to one photographer who may be already booked or overbudget. Style: A couple should take a close look at the full galleries of the photographer’s wedding photos to determine whether they like the style of the photos. Personality: During the interview, a couple should ask themselves whether the photographer’s personality puts them at ease. Nothing beats natural light: Take most of the wedding photos outside, if possible, in natural light, especially in the early morning or at sunset to get the best light. Budget, budget, budget: Clarify what is and is not included in the photo packages offered by potential photographers. Typically, packages offer a certain number of hours of the photographer’s time and additional services such as engagement photos, boudoir photos, photo books and prints. Some even offer drone photography. Prices in the SML area range from $1,000 to $6,000.

Dock Tale Hour
P
eering around the room, I inspect the scattered aftermath of our recent frenzied consumerism known as Christmas. Last month’s folly has me wading through all manner of electronics, kitchen gadgets, sweaters, scarves, socks and a delightful pair of whimsical unicorn and rainbow covered pillows. I ponder: Do I really need all this stuff? As much as I want to embrace a “stuff” purge, I’m fighting an uphill battle against my own gathering inclinations. I descend from a long line of junk store aficionados — I fondly remember perusing secondhand thrift stores with Nana, searching out short-sleeved dress shirts she could clean and repair for my dad. My dear Dad is also a fellow estate sale junkie who spends many a weekend hunting for treasure amongst the metal shelving in disheveled garages. We hunt, we gather — is our ancestral DNA to blame? Did early man and woman also quarrel over too many spears, rocks and animal hides piling up around the cave? Despite my propensities, I do believe I could go on a hunting and gathering diet, but for one collectible: blue glass Ball jars. My fascination with Ball jars began when someone shared the urban folklore of the elusive No. 13 jar. Ball jars are numbered on the bottom 1 through 15. Back in the day, moonshiners who used the jars for selling their whiskey believed No. 13 was unlucky so they broke the No. 13 jar in each case. Today, No. 13 jars are considered a rare find. I’ve no idea if there’s any truth behind this legend, but it’s the tale that makes the treasure all the more fun to hunt. I diligently try to convince myself that my vast collection of Ball jars will be put to good use. I’ve combed through hundreds of pages of Pinterest posts, vowing to utilize the inspiring Ball jar ideas for gifts, decorations, flower arrangements and light fixtures. I did recently give a friend a wildflower bouquet in a Ball jar — that’s gotta count for something.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER JANUARY • FEBRUARY 2019
I’ve honestly attempted to curb my Ball jar addiction. Just last weekend I made plans to attend a neighborhood garage sale with this in mind: No. Blue. Ball. Jar. Purchases. I was earnest in my vow. I looked to be up to the task when my initial scavenging through the garage and the bedrooms resulted in my plucking up no more than a small bud vase and a pair of unused work boots in my husband’s size. Alas, the kitchen provided for my perilous downfall. At first, I spied nothing of interest across the cluttered countertops. Then, just as I turned to leave, a glint through a crack of a cabinet door caught
For whom the Ball Tolls Do we get too much at the holidays? Probably, but some things are more than just “stuff.” Our humble humor columnist just can’t seem to kick her habit to a certain type of blue jar.

my eye. Unable to resist, I opened the door wider to reveal a lone blue Ball jar sitting in the middle of the dusty second shelf. “Honey, that is my last one,” noted the seller from across the room. “I forgot it was up in that cabinet. I’ll give it to you for two bucks and I’ll throw in the vase and the boots.” I didn’t even check to see if it was a No. 13 as I plunked down $2. Please try not to judge — maybe I’ll make you a lamp. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties. Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
