JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

N

ationwide, people are becoming bee hoteliers, setting up nesting sites, called bee hotels, to attract a variety of bees. The targeted guests are members of the various genera and species of small, non-aggressive mason and leafcutter bees. Known as tunnel-nesting bees, they look for dry tunnels in which to lay eggs, seeking out hollow plant stems, abandoned borer-beetle holes and similar spots. Both mason and leafcutter bees lay their eggs in existing holes and do not damage structures to make their nests. Both genera also stay close to home, foraging for pollen and nectar within 300 feet of the nest. Unlike honeybees that live communally in hives, these mild-mannered bees that rarely sting are solitary, going about their business of preparing for the next generation without social interaction. However, they like nesting near other members of their species. Thus the bee hotel, which is simply a collection of hollow materials mounted in a frame and covered by a roof to keep out the rain. These hotels provide a dry environment that mimics the conditions bees prefer. There is a wide selection of bee hotels on the market; it also is easy and inexpensive to make your own.

These hotels provide a dry environment that mimics the conditions bees prefer.

RIGHT. This impressive bee hotel was designed by Karen Blair, an artist based in Crozet. It is both a work of art and a haven for nesting bees. BELOW. The large tube filled with bamboo is tucked under the eaves to keep the nests dry. Notice the sealed holes where eggs have been laid.

The design of your bee hotel or hotels is limited only by your imagination and the needs of your apian guests.

Resembling a dollhouse, this hotel built by Jody Tullis Piecas is filled with a beautiful assortment of materials, adding interest to the design and functionality for the bees.

Lifecycle of tube-nesting bees

Most mason bees are spring pollinators, emerging from their nests early in the season when temperatures warm to approximately 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Leafcutters emerge later in spring or in early summer. Spring-emerging mason bees are excellent pollinators for orchard fruits and nuts, berries and early springblooming flowers. Summer-emerging leafcutters are superb pollinators of summer vegetables and flowers. Immediately upon emerging, both mason and leafcutter females mate and begin looking for nesting sites. Once a mason bee female finds a suitable tunnel, she seals up the back end with mud (ergo the common name mason bee) and begins collecting pollen and nectar. Leafcutter females do the same, except they seal off the individual cells with leaves and flower petals. The female carries the pollen-nectar mixture to the nest, rolls it into a ball, positions it at the end of the tunnel and lays an egg on top so the emerging larva will have nourishment. She then seals off the cell, repeating the process until she’s filled the space. Once she has completed one tunnel, she will begin filling another. This routine will continue for four to six weeks, after which she dies. During her short lifetime, she will pollinate and cross-pollinate thousands of flowers.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

Once the male has mated, he is dispensable. To ensure future generations, females control the gender of each egg they lay. Female-bearing eggs are laid at the back of the tunnel where they are less likely to be killed by predators. The male eggs are laid near the opening, so they are the first to emerge, and they can be standing by to mate as the females come out. The next generation of mason bees will remain in the nest until the following spring. Some leafcutter larvae go into winter hibernation, emerging as adults the following summer. Others hatch right away and emerge as adults the same summer they were laid. These are called second generation bees.

Building your own bee hotel

The design of your bee hotel or hotels is limited only by your imagination and the needs of your apian guests. Online you’ll find hundreds of inspiring images of these structures. The more elaborate ones double as works of art in the garden. Most are attractive, creating a pleasing, patterned focal point in the garden. Being a bee hotelier is an easy way to boost the population of local pollinators. As a bonus, you’ll have a front row seat to watch the fascinating lifecycle of these remarkable creatures.

Practical tiPs for bee hotels Different genera and species of bees require different diameter tunnels. To attract a wide selection, use a variety of materials. Tunnel-nesting bees are attracted to reeds, bamboo, raspberry, thistle, cow parsley and other hollow or pithy stems, as well as drilled blocks of wood and paper tubes. Use a sharp bit for drilling holes in untreated wood blocks, as splinters can be fatal to native bees. Six-inch long, 5/16-inch diameter tunnels that don’t pierce through the opposite side are ideal for mason bees. Build a solid, overhanging roof over the bee hotel to protect the nests from rain. Face the bee hotel south to benefit

from warm morning sun; place it near blooming, pollen-rich plants so the bees can optimize their egglaying time without having to forage far afield. In the wild, eggs are laid in natural cavities, which are rarely re-used. To avoid parasite and disease problems, clean or dispose of manmade nests after one or two seasons of use. An excellent reference book on keeping bees and attracting pollinators is “Pollinator Friendly Gardening” by Rhonda Fleming Hayes. The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation website (xerces.org) also is a valuable resource.

ver the past four years, one of Rocky Mount’s most famous landmarks has had new life breathed into it. Originally known as The Grove, The Early Inn was constructed in 1854 as John Stafford Hale’s homeplace. At one time, Hale was married to the sister of Confederate Gen. Jubal Early, who also kept his law office on the property. The Greek revival-style home sits on more than 10 acres surrounded by beautiful oak trees, some of which were planted in 1900 by the second owner.

Three families lived in this house before Bryan Hochstein purchased it in December 2013 with the idea of transforming it into a bed and breakfast. “It was fairly dilapidated when I bought it,” said Hochstein of the home that sat vacant for eight months before he purchased it. The interior of the home boasts some eye-catching details. The stairs, railings and floors (the floor planks on the main level run the entire length of the room) are all original and the ceilings are more than 12 feet high.

lying America’s flag is a way to show patriotism and to honor those who have sacrificed for our freedom. For the last five years, Mike Link has owned and operated American Pride Flagpoles in Hardy, a business his father started after retiring from the U.S. Postal Service. Nearly all of Link’s flagpole installations are in Virginia. “Anything over 30 feet tall requires a state contractor’s license, and I would need separate ones to work across state lines,” Link said. He’s done several commercial installations in Northern Virginia, but the travel time required is hard with his schedule since he also works full time as a delivery driver for a freight company in Roanoke. Smith Mountain Lake is one of Link’s favorite places to install flagpoles. “The end results, often with lake and surrounding mountain backdrop, tend to be spectacular,” he said. “There’s just something about flags popping in the breeze with blue water in the background. They look great from the water, too.” Link recently installed a 40-foot pole at the Bedford Regional Water Authority’s new SML Water Treatment Plant and has installed another half-dozen for lake homeowners. Tom and Ginger Tanner hired him to install a 20foot staff on the lake side of their new home in the Baywood community near Scruggs. Tom Tanner, who works at the Roanoke Regional Small Business Development Center, met Link as a client and found his flagpole enterprise intriguing. “We had a pole at our previous Baywood home, but it was a shorter, DIY affair,” Tanner said. “This time, we hired Mike to do it right.” That involved purchasing a tapered spun aluminum pole (as opposed to cheaper, untapered aluminum or galvanized steel poles found at home stores) and using a ground sleeve that is at least 10 percent of the pole’s height. At the Tanners’ home,

theirs is 6 inches in diameter and 24 inches deep. The sleeve sits atop a steel lightning rod, which doesn’t come with a store-bought pole set. Sand is packed around the pole and sealed with several inches of hydraulic concrete to keep rainwater out. A dozen or so bags of regular concrete are mixed to anchor the sleeve. “The pole itself can be broken free and moved if necessary, but that sleeve is in the ground to stay,” Link said. “This is no temporary flagpole.” Link also helped the Tanners choose a location for their flagpole that doesn’t interfere with the view of the lake from their home. “It’s in the view, but not directly in the sight line,” Ginger Tanner said. Will and Barb Nocera, who live in The Overlook community, chose a 25-foot pole due to the steep slope of their lot, as well as a nautical motif in keeping with planned proximity to the waterfront and boathouse. Installing a flagpole was Will Nocera’s pet project. “Because I’m a gung ho American,” said Nocera, who served 12 years in the Air Force plus a 35-year

career supporting defense intelligence agencies. “My family raised me to be patriotic, and everywhere I’ve traveled in Asia and Europe has made me that much more appreciative of living in this country.” At first, Link was reluctant to tackle the Noceras’ project because of their steep lot. “Getting the pole down near the water — much less erecting it — seemed a bit daunting,” Nocera recalled. “He [Link] came with his son and another helper, and they wrestled the pole down the hill and dug the hole by hand. But as it turned out, the steep slope actually made getting the pole upright easier.” The Noceras display a smaller Virginia flag beneath their 4-foot by 6-foot U.S. flag. The staff’s nautical crosspiece allows for another one to be flown (They plan to add a custom-designed Lago Bella flag there — it’s the name they’ve given their property.). Will Nocera said he is looking into adding lighting, which will allow the flag to be flown through the night. “Lowering it every night at dusk and hoisting it again in the morning was really cool at first, but it has lost its novelty,” he said. Joe Hock, who has lived in The Waterfront community since 2010, found American Pride from an internet search about three years ago. He had Link arrange custom fabrication of a 40-foot nautical pole, with a yardarm where he also can fly German and Swedish flags that pay tribute to his and wife Carolyn’s ancestry. “I just knew the nautical look would be right for our property,” Hock said. “I wanted it done right, and Mike quickly convinced me that’s how he’d do it.” Hock’s installation also inspired another lakefront pole — at the Park Place home of Rocky and Patti Hartman. “We’ve had a flag flying at our place in

Greensboro and like how it represents the freedom, democracy, security, pride and opportunity we enjoy in America,” Rocky Hartman said. “Seeing Joe’s nautical pole said to me, ‘That’s just what we need at our new SML home.’” The Hartmans positioned their flagpole to be in the view from their porch and master suite and pruned some trees to make it more visible from the lake. In addition to Old Glory, the Hartmans also fly the flags of Virginia and North Carolina. “The states we especially love,” Rocky Hartman said. And while they take the flags down in the offseason because the winter winds can cause the flags to tear, Hartman said, “They fly full time throughout

tephanie and Pat Zimmerman could have planned their June 2017 wedding in their home state of Florida, a place many couples might consider a wedding location dream come true. Instead, this bride and groom opted for a less chaotic, but just as stunning, location to gather with friends and family — Smith Mountain Lake. “Knowing a lot of our guests would travel from out of town, we first looked into Tampa, Florida because of the large airport, but were quickly overwhelmed by the wedding industry there,” Stephanie recalled.

“My parents, Bill and Carolyn Koontz, moved to Smith Mountain Lake a few years ago, and it felt more like home for us.” Stephanie and Pat, both biologists, who met while working at an Air Force base, chose the lawn overlooking the lake at Mariners Landing Resort Community and Conference Center in Huddleston to say their “I do’s.” Pat said having the ceremony outside fit the couple’s outdoorsy personalities. “The wedding was perfect,” he said. “My dad performed the ceremony, the weather was great, and I showed up on a boat. Florida residents and biologists Stephanie and Pat Zimmerman chose an outdoor ceremony on the lawn at Mariners Landing Resort Community and Conference Center in Huddleston in June. “The wedding was perfect,” Pat said. “My dad performed the ceremony, the weather was great, and I showed up on a boat. Our friends and family commented that it was one of the best weddings they’d been to because of the laid-back atmosphere.”

CLOCKWISE FROM FAR RIGHT. Pat and Stephanie Zimmerman enjoy a stroll along the beach at Mariners Landing in Huddleston after their wedding ceremony on the lawn overlooking the lake. With family and friends coming from out of town, the Zimmermans honored them with the full Smith Mountain Lake guest treatment. “Many of our guests turned the wedding weekend into a vacation so we actually got to see them all three days,” Stephanie said. Treats served at the reception included minicupcakes. As a tribute to family, Stephanie’s wedding ring included diamonds from her grandmother’s ring.

commented that it was one of the best weddings they’d been to because of the laid-back atmosphere.” Pat’s father performing the ceremony (unofficially, as the couple was legally wed in Florida prior) was just one part of many aspects that made the event a true family affair. In fact, Stephanie said the theme of the entire weekend was about family. “Pat has three children from a previous marriage, and we wanted to include the kids as much as possible since this was not just a union of him and I, but of all of us,” Stephanie said. “The kids stood with him during the ceremony, walked down the aisle with the wedding party, and even poured some sand with me for the sand ceremony.” The bride also paid tribute to family legacy with the help of her mother and some special heirlooms. “As Pat and I are both older, all of our grandparents have passed away, and I wanted them to be with me as much as possible, especially the women in my life that have made me who I am,” Stephanie said. “My dress was made of my mother’s wedding dress, and she made it for me. I wore one of my grandmother’s necklaces she left to me, and my ring has diamonds from my other grandmother’s wedding ring. I also wore a bracelet from my aunt, and had lapel pins

Fine-tuning the details Sisters Felecia and Donna Fischell brought their two decades of event planning experience to Smith Mountain Lake with their business, An Affair to Remember, about four years ago. Felecia Fischell was hired to help coordinate Stephanie and Pat’s wedding and shares advice on the advantages of using a wedding planner. What all did you do for Stephanie and Pat’s wedding? For their wedding, we were a “day of the event” planner, which means we tied all the loose ends together and made things flow smoothly. There’s a huge checklist, but some of the more prominent things we do are coordinating timing, overseeing vendors and catering, ensuring the right amount of seating, placing signage and equipping bathrooms with baskets filled with things like needle and thread to toothbrushes and toothpaste, so every possible need is covered.

Southern Roots

Did anything stand out to you about Stephanie and Pat’s day?

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, VIRGINIA

I had the best team of vendors. They made my job so much easier because they did a great job hiring. I also thought the family emphasis they put on their wedding was beautiful. Why should a bride and groom get help from a wedding planner? A wedding planner is the icing on the cake, especially on the day of the event. It frees the couple and their parents to be hospitable to guests. It gives them the breathing room to know that someone else is taking care of the behind-the-scenes coordinating.

The setting is spectacular. The cost of services is a full third less than most major metropolitan areas. It’s rich with activities that appeal to all age groups. The parks, the water sports, the local venues, the history and the people are absolutely wonderful.

They appreciated having things to do while we were busy on the day of the wedding, as well as both sides getting to meet and interact for more than just the reception.” As for other couples planning their own SML wedding, Pat and Stephanie offered the following advice: “Just remember the day is meant for you and your fiance, so do what you want,” Stephanie said. “Have fun and enjoy it, don’t worry about all the small stuff or the things you can’t control,” Pat added. Both also reiterated the value of having their special day at Smith Mountain Lake. “It’s a beautiful landscape so take advantage of the backdrop.”

Timing is everything. Making award-winning wine takes time. Roger Furrow, owner of Hickory Hill Vineyards in Moneta, is grateful for the gift of time. Five years ago, Roger went into cardiac arrest after a routine stress test at Centra Medical Group Stroobants Cardiovascular Center in Moneta. Chad Hoyt, MD, and Laura Bollard, RN, sprang into action, performing CPR to save his life. Within minutes, the Centra ONE helicopter landed and they were flown to Centra Lynchburg General Hospital where cardiologists discovered three blockages and Roger underwent a triple bypass heart surgery.

Above: Roger Furrow, owner, Hickory Hill Vineyards Top (L to R): Chad Hoyt, MD, Roger Furrow, Laura Bollard, RN

Our providers in Moneta are accepting new patients: Chad Hoyt, MD Chris Lewis, MD Tom Meyer, MD Samuel Omotoye, MD Jesse Naples, PA-C

The winemaker treasures every day on the family vineyard. Each grape harvested builds upon a craft requiring patience and time. Roger credits his cardiologist, surgeon and nurses for giving him more of the latter.

struggle to my feet …” It was that five-word writing prompt that won aspiring writer Leah Weiss $150 in a short-story writing contest six years ago. It’s also the opener of Weiss’ debut novel, “If the Creek Don’t Rise,” which has garnered national and international acclaim since its official release last August. “It’s been a crazy ride,” Weiss said when reached by phone at her home in Lynchburg. Centered on life in the small, fictitious Appalachian town of Baines Creek, the novel begins as main character, newlywed and mother-to-be Sadie Blue, has just taken her latest beating from husband, Roy. “From the moment the prompt fell on my page, Sadie appeared in my mind as a complete person and personality, from her slight form and pale skin, to her mountain voice and her birth in Appalachia,” Weiss wrote in a Q&A section in the book. For 24 years Weiss worked as executive assistant to the headmaster at Lynchburg’s Virginia Episcopal School before retiring in 2015. She had written articles for a local magazine back in the 1980s and special letters to family and friends that often ended up framed, but Weiss never considered herself to be a writer. It wasn’t until 2004 when a friend complimented Weiss on her style that she reconsidered. “He said, ‘Gosh, you have a distinct wit and way with words,’” she recalled. “He challenged me to try my hand at writing, and I thought about writing about my mother’s extraordinary life.” Weiss began documenting the life story

of her mother, Lucy, one of 15 children born on a tobacco farm in North Carolina with no electricity or running water. Just four months after capturing those memories, Lucy died of lung cancer. Just 10 months after that, Weiss’ companion of 14 years died. Now 70, Weiss said those losses 14 years ago spurred a “creative awakening” in her. “I filled all that time I would have spent with them writing,” she said. “I began as a novice not having any idea about the rules.” After having received a copy of “Olive Kitteridge” by Elizabeth Strout from a friend, Weiss became inspired to write a larger work. “I loved the format,” she said. “Its unique short-story structure turned novel, and the dark character of Olive inspired this book about richly flawed folks.” When it came time for Weiss to fully develop her novel, she did her homework, talking to published authors, attending the Wildacres Writers Workshop in the mountains of North Carolina and researching extensively on topics, including moonshine, coal mining, exorcisms and Loretta Lynn. “No detail was too small to bring authenticity to Baines Creek residents in 1970,” Weiss wrote in the book’s acknowledgments. Not only is the Appalachian vernacular meant to transport readers, but how the words flow rhythmically is intentional, too. “My family history is steeped in music,” Weiss said. “I brought the importance of music and lyricism to this book on purpose. It’s delightful when it’s read out loud.” Written in first-person present tense,

reader rEvIEwS Shooting Creek and Other Stories By Scott Loring Sanders

the book’s characters are meant to seem more real. “What I think that choice ended up developing is a much more intimate perspective,” Weiss said. And readers have noticed. With hundreds of five-star reviews on Goodreads and Amazon, they are heaping praise on Weiss. “I couldn’t put this book down,” one reviewer wrote. “If you have any ties to Appalachia, this book will really hit home. If you don’t have ties to the area, open your mind and allow it to teach you about the mindset of those who live the daily struggles of life in the mountains here.” After its release last August, best-selling romance author Maya Rodale wrote in a review for NPR: “‘If The Creek Don’t Rise,’ by debut novelist Leah Weiss, paints a fascinating, gripping portrait of the interconnected and often unseen ways people help each other get by in this remote Appalachian town. While ‘If The Creek Don’t Rise’ is Sadie Blue’s story, Weiss tells it through the perspectives of those who help — or hurt — her, delving deeply into each character’s point of view and backstory and creating a different, perfect voice for each character.” As for what’s next, Weiss recently married Dave Harpster, whom she’d dated for 18 months, and who also had joined her on her cross-country promotion of her book. Now that she’s back home in Lynchburg, Weiss is already in the thick of research for her next book, but doesn’t have any firm timeline in mind for it. “I would love to be able to write as quickly as my readers read,” she said. — Karen Dillon, Editor

“Shooting Creek and Other Stories” compiles award-winning short stories from area author Scott Loring Sanders. They are part mystery, part horror, part family drama, all of literary quality. The book is, at its core, Appalachian fiction. Most of the stories are set in Virginia, and Sanders wrote all of them while living in Christiansburg. Sanders evokes place with details, which are generous but not so complicated as to distract the reader from the stories themselves. Cultural clues such as flora and fauna, local town names and Southwest Virginia dialect connect with local readers. Similarly, clues as to the era — whether they be cellphones or Nazis — let readers know when stories are set without disrupting the flow of the text with overt references. Authentic characters are at the heart of Sanders’ stories. There are a number of disturbed women, but Sanders is at his best when depicting down-and-out men who have tough decisions to make. Despite their similarities, each main character has his or her own voice. Sanders takes readers inside their heads as they grapple with ethical dilemmas. Readers can feel characters teetering on the precipice, such as in “Joyride” where a teenage boy is caught between the straight and narrow life his mother has created for him and the treasure that the dark side, in the person of his older criminal cousin, could bring him. This love of money is the root of evil in several stories. While that description is cliche, Sanders’ stories are anything but. Having read this book on the heels of “Hillbilly Elegy” by J.D. Vance, I could not help but make connections. Most of Sanders’ characters are not purely evil but rather, as in Vance’s nonfiction portrayal of Appalachia, folks often see few ways out except the amoral. Sanders shows just how far folks

will go for a fortune — or, as in “The Pawn,” for five dollars. It is the weakest story in terms of compelling character interactions and plot as it focuses on just one character while lacking the grotesque elements that make the other stories more thrilling. And perhaps it hits too close to reality as it taps into the drug epidemic in Appalachia. A fascinating component of Sanders’ stories are family dynamics. The title story “Shooting Creek” is the strongest and interweaves unrequited love, a mother’s devotion to her son and a marriage gone stale. This is the only story that is told from different viewpoints, a successful vehicle given that each character is written as distinct and has his or her own motivations. Sanders injects dark humor into his stories, which keeps them from seeming too twisted. Salty language adds flash, while also giving the stories a realistic, believable quality. The stories are well-written, rich with figurative language and descriptive words. Each story also seems to be the right length; it is a true accomplishment with the format of short stories to develop realistic characters, plot and theme in about 20 pages. Sanders is an expert in bringing readers with him on the journey by making every word count. As with most short story collections by one author, these pieces are best consumed separate from one another. They can start to run together when read in tandem given their similarities in setting, characterization and storyline. While the stories will keep readers awake at night, they are not scary in the typical “gotcha” way. Moral ambiguity is the real essence of the book, and readers will ponder what the best course of action is in these sometimes unwinnable situations that Sanders creates for his characters. — Jennifer Poff Cooper, Christiansburg SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Just like

There are certain indisputable truths that we must all face as we move through our lives. We cannot cheat death. We each carry an expiration date and try as we might, we will in fact, someday, leave this world. We must also pay our taxes. Now, you might be able to cheat on your taxes, but really, why put yourself through that? Paying taxes is our commitment to our social fabric. Finally, we will all, eventually, utter these words: Back in my day… Especially at the beginning of the year, as we’ve just exclaimed adios to 2017 and are viewing 2018 through the lens of optimistic declarations (my new running shoes lay by the front door as I type), there’s a temptation by those of us sitting in Club 50 (or beyond) to wax poetic about how much better we had it, back in the day. There are, in fact, a few things I wish we could bring back. As we’ve evolved, we’ve left behind a few gems that I believe deserve a second chance and should be brought out of retirement. Disco. I’m well aware that I risk a deluge of hate mail by even insinuating that disco should rise from the ashes. But, disco was fun! It wasn’t just the fabulous music, it was also the clothes (OK, the glittery headbands looked a bit ridiculous on everyone), the dance moves and the sheer joy of a Saturday night filled with gyrating ‘til your feet ached — because, disco heels! Why did disco ever die? Mix tapes. There was a time when the ultimate declaration of one’s undying love could be easily encapsulated in the confines of a small plastic object the size of an index card.

Many a night I toiled over the creation of the perfect collection of songs to bestow upon my boyfriend du jour. Of course, the re-emergence of the cassette tape would necessitate that we also bring back cassette tape players, but we can leave that to the audiophiles. Air travel that doesn’t suck. Yes, my friends, there was a time when boarding a plane and flying off to some distant destination was actually enjoyable. I know, hard to believe. Planes were designed with ample leg room, lunch or dinner was served, and sometimes there was even an adult beverage provided — at no charge! Especially after the 2017 holiday travel spectacle we’ve just survived, we most definitely need to elevate this one to the top of our “Bring it back!” priority list. Gas station attendants. I really don’t understand why we ever did away with this merry tribe of do-gooders. As you pulled into the gas station you were greeted by a smiling kind soul who not only pumped your gas, but also checked your tires, washed your windshield AND looked under the hood for good measure. I would gladly tip handsomely for this kind of service today. There are so many good things we did better back in the day, but, I’ve got to go now — I must go shoo those darn kids off my front lawn. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of “I Was In Love With a Short Man Once” and “Magic Fishing Panties.” Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
