You have probably heard the adage: “Everybody has a story.” And lake resident Doug Miller certainly has one! He shares his lifelong love of motorcycle riding, plus talks about how he adapted his bikes to suit his needs. “W

e weren’t planning to buy a house. We were just looking while spending time at my sister’s lake house,” recalled recently retired Navy captain and aviator Eric Cheney. Eric and his wife, Marita, initially had mixed feelings about the Boxwood Green home that they had seen online. “But when we got out of the car, an EA-6 — one of the military jets that makes runs down the Blackwater toward the dam — flew over the house,” Marita added. “That was Eric’s old airplane. We thought that must be a sign.” At first glance, Marita found the home’s interior too dark for her liking. “But despite all its dark wood cabinets, moldings and doors, I could see that the house had good bones,” she said. Eric’s reaction? “I walked in, saw the lake, checked out the dock and said, ‘This is it,’” he recalled. That was 2014. Since then, the Cheneys have spent time, effort and money brightening up the 15-year-old home before moving into it full time in April. Because the Cheneys were living in a condo in Virginia Beach — Eric’s last post of his 37-year Navy

Josie earned a BFA in Interior Design from Radford University during which she completed an extensive internship with Interiors By Kris. Since then, Long practiced design in Richmond, Virginia, with Ultimate Builders Services designing and staging homes and most recently as a design consultant for Arhaus furniture before relocating to Smith Mountain Lake full-time to become Interiors By Kris’ Lead Designer.

career — they had the luxury of not having to live in the house while it was being updated. Marita made trips back and forth to oversee work on the house. “This is our 14th house,” Marita said, “so maybe the project gets easier after you’ve done a house 13 times before.” They hired painters to redo the olive green walls to a pleasant blue — which Sherwin Williams calls “graphite gray.” “I tried eight color samples on one wall before deciding on the color,” Marita said. And all of the home’s dark moldings, as well as the kitchen cabinets, got a fresh coat of white paint. “It was transforming! What a difference,” Marita recalled. “I had the painter leave the toe molding dark to match the newly refinished floors, but when I saw how it looked, I decided it, too, should be white.” Marita took care of it with primer and two white topcoats of paint one rainy weekend. She also brightened the stairs leading to the home’s lower level with two coats of blue and white “deck and stair” paint. Marita then tackled the stone fireplace. She transformed the tan, orange and brown stones to a grayish white with watereddown Annie Sloan chalk paint often used for painting furniture. It took her three days to do the project, in part because the orange from the stone kept ruinously infecting her paint supply. She also painted the grout.

In addition, she has chalk-painted several pieces of furniture, including tables, chairs and a rocker. She re-batted and recovered the rocker with a nautical material that matches the inserts she installed on a built-in entertainment unit. The only beige-colored room is Eric’s office, which includes his desk, along with military awards, his Navy scabbard and his son’s West Point scabbard. When they purchased the home, the lower level was unfinished, so they hired a contractor to put up wallboard and create a fireplace, an entertaining area and an art studio. All of the paintings in the home were done by Marita, who happened upon an oil painting class at a Hobby Lobby craft store in Tennessee nine years ago. Since then she has continued to take lessons. “All the moving around has afforded me a wonderful opportunity to take lessons from phenomenal artists,” she said. She even sold one of her paintings at The Little Gallery when it was located at

With the transformation complete, the house now feels light, airy and beachy. The Cheneys have made outdoor improvements as well. Visitors are greeted by fragrant pink roses that climb their home’s front porch railing. There are colorful flowers in planters along the side porch and a brilliant line of shocking pink creeping phlox that blooms in springtime and edges along the riprap on the lakefront side of their home. Although still relative newcomers to the lake, Eric and Marita, who have three grown children, have made many friends as they’re often seen walking their English cream golden retriever Scotty or kayaking along the nearby shoreline. And now that the house is finished, “We look forward to having our distant friends come and share this wonderful place with us,” Eric said.

If you were sent on a scavenger hunt to find amaranth, tampala, tassel flower, flaming fountain, fountain plant, Joseph’s Coat, love-liesbleeding, molten flower, prince’s feather, pigweed and summer poinsettia, how many plants would you need to find? Answer: One. These are all common names for Amaranthus. The name Amaranth derives from Greek amárantos, which means “unfading,” combined with ánthos, the Greek word for “flower.” The name refers to an imaginary flower that never fades or dies. Certainly anyone who has the pleasure of seeing a dramatic amaranth flower in full bloom will have an unfading memory of the image.

Not Just a Pretty Face but the annual amaranth plants offer far more than just pretty flowers. Their tasty seeds are nutrient-rich, packed with protein, which food experts estimate to be up to 30% more than true grains such as corn, rice and wheat. Because of the abundance of the essential amino acid lysine, the seed is considered to be a complete protein. The gluten-free seeds can be ground into flour, popped like popcorn, sprouted, toasted, added to soups or stews for thickening and made into candies. They have three times the fiber content and five times the iron of wheat. They also have twice the calcium of milk and are low in both saturated fat and cholesterol. In fact, the oil in the seeds has been shown to lower bad

Young, tender amaranth leaves, which are related to spinach, are a rich source of niacin, folate, iron, magnesium and phosphorus, and a good source of dietary fiber, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B6, calcium, potassium, copper and manganese, among others. sions, dances, songs, prayers, and finally human sacrifices that, in addition to the ritual manslaughter, involved mixing the human blood with amaranth seeds. At the end of the festival, the tasty seed and honey statue was cut into small pieces so everybody could eat a little piece of the god. Modern Mexicans make a treat similar to the Huitzilopochtli god statue by mixing popped amaranth seeds with pumpkin and sesame seeds and cooking them with sugar and blackstrap molasses. Some cooks flavor the sweet bars with lime and cinnamon. Called alegría, which means joy in Spanish, the candy normally is cut into bars, but during the Day of the Dead celebrations, the sweets are molded into shapes such as skulls, flowers and animals. In India the stems of Joseph’s Coat (Amaranthus tricolor) are eaten like asparagus. The leaves of Amaranthus viridis are the basis of the Caribbean dish callaloo. In the Northeastern Indian state of Manipur, the same plant is known as cheng-kruk; in South India, especially Kerala, it is called kuppacheera. Common in Bengali cuisine, it goes by note shak, which means leafy vegetable. Africans and Maldivians have been eating A. viridis for centuries. Writing in Australia in 1889, botanist Joseph Maiden wrote that A. viridis “is an excellent substitute for spinach, being far superior to much of the leaves of the white beet sold … [as a substitute for] spinach in Sydney [Australia]. Next to spinach it seems to be most like boiled nettle leaves, which when young are used in England, and are excellent. This amarantus should be cooked like spinach, and as it becomes more widely known, it is sure to be popular, except amongst persons who may consider it beneath their dignity to have anything to do with so common a weed.” Amaranth was “rediscovered” in the United States in the 1970s. Readily available from seed companies is the old-fashioned flower called by the evocative name love-lies-bleeding (A. caudatus). Clusters of long tassels of flower heads made up of hundreds of tiny bright red to pink blooms droop “bleeding” from the 3-foot to 8-foot-tall plants. The long-lasting flowers can be used either fresh or dried in arrangements. This ancient species is native to the American tropics, where it was known to be edible, as well as beautiful. Another striking species of Amaranthus is Joseph’s Coat (A. tricolor). It is grown for the eye-catching red, orangered and green leaves that adorn the tip of

each stalk, which resemble a multi-colored poinsettia. An heirloom plant, it is featured in Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello gardens. It loves heat and humidity, making it ideal for our climate. ‘Molten Fire’ is an A. tricolor hybrid that lives up to its name. In midsummer the foliage at the top of each stem turns a dazzling red-maroon. Each red rippled leaf points downward, creating the effect of a brilliant lava flow. The vivid color display lasts into the fall. Like Joseph’s Coat, it thrives in hot, humid weather. Another highly ornamental amaranth is A. cruentus x A powellii ‘Hopi Red Dye’. Reaching 4 feet to 6 feet tall, the plant is

an eye-catching feature in any garden. The outstanding magenta flower plumes have earned it the common name Prince’s Feather. Even before the show stopping flowers bloom, the dark maroon foliage and burgundy stems provide plenty of visual interest. Like many other Amaranthus species, the red seedlings are a beautiful addition to a microgreen collection, the colorful baby leaves enliven salads, and the flowers are stunning in bouquets. Allow some flowers to go to seed. They’re delicious and make a good substitute for poppy seeds in recipes. Eat them raw, sprouted, toasted, roasted or ground into flour for baking. The plants attract butterflies, hummingbirds and bees.

Growing Amaranth amaranth is an undemanding plant, thriving well in part to full sun. For the most vibrant flowers, it is best that the soil not be too rich. Otherwise the plants will pour their energy into growing tall instead

of producing flowers. In spring, wait until the soil temperature is 65 degrees to 75 degrees Fahrenheit before direct sowing the seeds in prepared beds. Either space the seeds 18 inches to 24 inches apart, placing four seeds in each hole and later thinning to the strongest plant, or scatter seeds over loosened soil, rake to bury them and then walk over the bed to tamp them down. Keep the ground moist until the seeds have germinated, which should happen in 10 to 21 days. If you want an early jump on the growing season, next spring start them indoors in mid-March, which is about six weeks before the last expected frost at the lake. Keep the plants moist throughout the growing season. Each amaranth plant produces thousands of seeds, and they’re easy to harvest. Save what you need for next year’s display in the garden — or let them self-sow — and then use the rest in kitchen. You’ll find plenty of interesting recipes online for using both the plant’s leaves and seeds.

Farming has dominated the Wirtz and Burnt Chimney areas for more than a century.

t’s definitely a question for a “come here” who might, if she lives at Smith Mountain Lake, find that Wirtz is her mailing address. This same newcomer might become confused, though, as a search for a Wirtz post office leads instead to the area known as Burnt Chimney, near the intersection of Virginia 122 and 116. So where is Wirtz? A GPS search leads down Wirtz Road (Virginia 697), where, just off the railroad tracks, one can spy a small green “Wirtz” sign, but the only other sign of any community is the large building that houses the business called Gary’s Antiques. “Wirtz has spread a lot over the last few years,” said Linda Webb, a lifelong resident of the area. “It used to be very, very contained, but now it’s a long way, almost to the lake.” *

WERTZ OR WIRTZ?

Webb recalled growing up in the area along Wirtz Road, surrounded by family, including grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. “We were farmers, of course,” she said. “We would raise hay and oats and wheat … we raised everything we ate, had cows, chickens and pigs. We canned everything, we even canned the meat.” She added, “I can remember when there were very few houses on this road. I can remember the road when it was a dirt road, before it was paved.” A trip to the Franklin County Historical Society in Rocky Mount yielded more clues. Committed to collecting, preserving and sharing history, the society offers extensive genealogical resources, a wealth of information on the history of the county and an opportunity to speak with Doris Eames, a historian and a Franklin County native. At one time there was more to the town of Wirtz. “Do you recall the underpass under the railroad?” Eames asked. “The store and the post office were right there, that building that’s still sitting there.” In fact, the post office and the railroad combined to create the Wirtz community. In the late 1800s, the Norfolk & Western Railway was building its route from Roanoke to Rocky Mount, and Samuel Wertz (1841 – 1928), a Confederate veteran and owner of

There Really Was a Burnt Chimney

It also served as a post office named Reverie and was operated by Stephen C. Kennett. It ceased operating in 1891. Later the location became known as Burnt Chimney by many Franklin County natives and is now a landmark.”

a lot of the land in the area, offered shelter to the men who were working near his property. In his honor, the railroad officials named the local train station after him. However, they misspelled his name, and the area is known as Wirtz to this day. A drive on Wirtz Road in the direction of Rocky Mount leads underneath the railroad bridge embellished with the Norfolk & Western emblem. According to information at the historical society, three tomato canneries operated near Wirtz at one time, and the village included a post office and a store. Eames noted that a few reminders of the village still stand. Across Rock Lily Road at Gary’s Antiques is where the train station once stood. “You can see steps if you look closely when you’re in his parking lot,” Eames

t the corner of Virginia 122 and 116, a plaque marks the site where a stone chimney that had been a part of the Kennett Store once stood. The store, built by Nannie Starkey Turner in 1885, also served as a post office and was believed to have burned in 1895. The store’s chimney lived on for another 15 years, according to local lore. Burned black and standing around 15 feet tall, it became an easily noted landmark for travelers, who, coming north on Virginia 122, could head toward Roanoke on Virginia 116 by simply turning left “at the burnt chimney.” In the early 1960s, the name Burnt Chimney began to appear in official highway signs and maps produced by the Virginia Department of Highways (today known as Virginia Department of Transportation). The area hosted a variety of stores over the years, including Old Cooks Grocery Store, and even a false chimney on the wrong corner. A 1964 Lynchburg newspaper account attempted to set the record straight with a photograph of the faux chimney captioned, “This Is Wrong Chimney.” In 1991, a First Virginia Bank branch stood near the spot of the original charred chimney, and the Franklin County Historical Society erected a marker that still stands before the building that now houses the Windy Gap Outdoor Power Equipment business. Elsie and William Turner, descendants of Nannie Starkey Turner, attended the 1991 ceremony, contributing a piece of the original chimney, which was embedded into the ground near the current marker.

Where History Lives

he Franklin County Historical Society, located on Main Street in Rocky Mount, resides in a 1925 home that has been lovingly preserved. It is a veritable trove of genealogical information and memorabilia, a window into Franklin County’s long history, and an invaluable source of information on the history of Wirtz. Carved from Bedford and Henry counties in 1786 (with a portion later added from Patrick County), Franklin County took its name from Benjamin Franklin, and welcomed its residents from Pennsylvania via the Old Wagon Road, as well as from the Tidewater region of Virginia. Its first settlers came originally from Germany, England, France, Scotland and Africa. The main floor of the society houses its library, with hundreds of research books, family records for thousands of surnames, as well as a staff of volunteers who are devoted to Franklin County, its people and its history. The home also hosts hundreds of veterans, in the form of photographs and biographical information, of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the War Between the States. With a wink toward more modern Franklin County history, the society offers items for sale that commemorate the extralegal spirits industry for which the county is sometimes known. Its Moonshine Express tour just celebrated its 15th running this spring, and its Coke & Shine Exhibition opened last month in the society’s Annex building. The Historical Society is open daily except Wednesdays and Sundays, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Even with the decrease in manufacturing and farming, the growth of traffic in the area around Wirtz is notable, as Wirtz Road is a popular shortcut from the lake to destinations closer to Roanoke. Growing up, Holley said, “My brother and I would ride bicycles on [Wirtz Road] to Route 122, and never think twice about it.” However, he added, “You couldn’t pay me to get on a bicycle to get on this road now!” The increase in traffic happened in the mid-1960s as Smith Mountain Lake began to attract newcomers to the area, but Holley noted that the growth has not been confined to the lake itself. “A lot of what used to be wooded area and farmland, I guess the next generation didn’t want to farm it, so they sold it,” he said. “Contractors came in, divided it into lots. The entire county’s getting more crowded.” A drive along Wirtz Road still offers beautiful vistas and a convenient route to Boones Mill and Roanoke. But even a newcomer can appreciate how this busy road and old community are, to many people, so much more: it is home.

The train stopped there, and a lot of folks that lived in that area worked for the railroad.” Eames also recalled that her mother had worked in the tomato canning factory that had occupied the Gary’s Antiques building in the mid-1930s. Following World War II, she described how younger people began moving from farming and into local manufacturing. In particular, Eames’ father worked for U.S. Steel in Roanoke. Many local men worked at the Vinton Weaving Mill while several local women worked at Kenrose Sewing Factory, Eames recalled. “There was a work bus that came through every morning,” she said. “Dad would drive up, he and a neighbor, and they’d get on the bus every day. And the bus would go into Roanoke and drop the Kenrose ladies first.” Earl Holley, who has lived most of his life in Wirtz, also described the influence of manufacturing in Franklin County and Roanoke, as well as the impact of its decline. People worked in factories in Rocky Mount, he said. “Furniture, windows, and there were several sewing plants in Rocky Mount and Franklin County … but they’ve all since shut down.”

Doug Miller, whose youthful looks belie his 62 years, is full of surprises.

Despite lower body paralysis from a workplace shooting that also took half his eyesight 38 years ago, Doug has led a full life that has included rocketing high-performance motorcycles through tight corners and down irresistible straightaways. “I’ve never been without at least one motorcycle since age 11 when my older brother, Mike, bought me a Kawasaki Coyote minibike for Christmas,” Doug recalled. In his youth, Doug built a tool collection and excelled at maintaining and repairing two-wheeled machines. By age 21 he’d become a respected force on the “Hare Scramble” and Enduro dirt bike racing circuits, often driving through the night after work on Saturday to a Sunday race, then drive back to work on Monday. With determination and talent, he soon was racking up point totals fellow riders could only envy. Frustrated with the confines of a six-day-a-week managerial position, Doug, who was living in Florida at the time, left it for a typesetter’s job where the schedule allowed him to take weekend trips to races — then his top priority. One fateful Monday morning in 1981, his employer’s husband showed up, pistol in hand, to wreak havoc. Doug was shot twice — once in his lower spine and another in his neck.

Making a Comeback years earlier, while at a race in Pensacola, Doug visited a bike shop and saw a 1960s era classic BMW with Steib sidecar on display. At the time, he was fascinated by it, but little did he know that a sidecar rig would one day keep him riding. Following his initial recovery from the shooting, Doug’s racing buddies organized a benefit race, intent on buying him a Suzuki Quad Sport four-wheel, allterrain vehicle so he could once again ride off-road. At that point, Doug had already built his first sidecar from scratch and attached it to a Kawasaki KZ650. That rig had him riding the roads of Tallahassee and beyond. “But the four-wheeler was an amazing gift that got me back riding the woods with friends and occasionally racing in the ATV class,” Doug said. Over the years, Doug has either built from scratch or purchased several sidecars and mated them to various motorcycles. The sidecar not only provides riding stability, but it also can stow Doug’s wheelchair when

he’s riding solo. The three most recent sidecars have been sophisticated, high-performance ones from a manufacturer in France that were assembled in his garage and attached to a Suzuki Hayabusa racing bike. These kits replace the front fork with a center hub front end, wide performance tires all around and a linkage that steers the sidecar’s wheel. “Definitely not ‘your grandfather’s sidecar,’” Doug said dryly. Configuring a two-wheeled bike to accept a sidecar and be operated by hand controls instead of foot controls is no small endeavor, especially when working from a wheelchair. “It basically doubles the time

required for each task,” Doug said. Doug has overlaid his garage concrete with interlocking plastic tiles that ease his frequent need to transfer between chair and floor as he moves from bike to tool chests to workbench and back. “My shoulders complain about the strain of getting from floor to chair so many times,” he said. “But I love it.”

Finding a riding and life companion seven years ago, Doug married Bea, a Presbyterian minister. In 2016, they moved to the lake when Bea accepted an appointment as co-pastor at Trinity Ecumenical Parish. Since then they’ve enjoyed riding scenic roads around Southwest and Central Virginia. “There are twists and hills that make for challenging riding and beautiful vistas galore,” Doug said. Bea frequently joins Doug on those rides, sitting beside him in the sidecar. When she does come along, Doug stows his wheelchair in a small towable trailer

pulled behind the bike. “She had never been on a motorcycle before getting into my sidecar but took to it right away,” Doug said. The couple shared West Coast riding during Doug’s 12,639-mile excursion in 2015. “I soloed the southern route to California, then rode up to Seattle to visit my dad,” Doug recalled. “Bea flew out to join me there, and we backtracked along the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco and then returned through Yosemite, Lake Tahoe and Lassen Volcanic Park.” After Bea returned home to Florida where they were living at the time, Doug rode the northern route east, enjoying Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods and mountain roads in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. “Only on a motorcycle can you truly experience everything through all your senses,” Doug wrote on a blog he once used to keep his family and friends informed of his travels. “Your field of vision is unlimited, you feel the warmth of the sun, the slight cooling

Think of it as an electrically deployed set of training wheels.”

as you drop into a canyon, the first drop of rain, the cold of a mountain pass and the smells — sometimes great, sometimes not so — that greet you at every mile.” For this cross country trip, Doug’s motorcycle pulled a miniature camper trailer that he designed and built. “It holds my gear and cuts down on motel expense,” he said. He chooses twisty and scenic backroads that can sometimes double or triple the mileage rather than straight-line interstates. “Less cars, fewer buildings, more turns and inclines,” he said. In 2017 Doug and Bea took a three-week eastern route that included riding the Cabot Trail on Cape Beton Island, Nova Scotia. “It’s a lot like riding the Pacific Coast Highway,” he said.

doug, who is retired from Whitmyer Biomechanix, which offers head support systems, wheelchairs and assistive technology products, is self-taught in welding, pipe bending and motorcycle hand-control conversions. He’s currently using his expertise to modify a 2006 KTM 950 Supermoto that he found on eBay and retrieved from Florida. He’s installed control buttons for a thumb-activated electric gear shift near the left-

hand grip and added a lever just under the clutch that engages the rear brake. (As on most motorcycles, the front-wheel brake is already applied using a right-hand squeeze lever.) Think of it as an electrically deployed set of training wheels.” Doug referred to the two-wheeler as his “late-in-life splurge.” “It’s not practical because I can’t bring my wheelchair along,” he said. “I’ll only use this bike for three- to four-hour joy rides in the countryside.” When asked what the most challenging aspect of mobility-impaired cycling is, Doug answered, “Just the time it takes to get on and off.” He added, “Beyond that, it’s the expense. Equipping a bike with a sidecar, an electric shifter and brake modifications costs more than the motorcycle itself, even when you do it yourself.” Currently, no American manufacturers build handsonly controlled bikes, nor do they offer factory-installed sidecars. With his DIY skills, Doug can continue to make the sport accessible to him financially.

fter reading hundreds of books about the Vietnam War, Bedford resident John Ketwig set out to write one that he felt fully addressed what future generations should know about it. “There was no clear, one book that stood out, that if kids would read it they would get a pretty good idea of what it was about,” said Ketwig, who served for a year in Vietnam as a mechanic and a repairman. Published by Trine Day Publishing, Ketwig’s “Vietnam Reconsidered: The War, the Times and Why They Matter,” was released last month. Ketwig’s journey to make sense of the war and what he endured began more than three decades earlier when his memoir, “…and a hard rain fell: A GI’s true story of the War in Vietnam,” was published in 1982. It originally was intended to be a letter to his wife, Carolynn, and their children as a way to record his experiences of the war and begin the process of emotional healing. “The first book was like squeezing the pus out of an infection,” Ketwig said. “That was hugely, hugely personal.” The success of that book led to invitations for Ketwig to speak to high school and college students around the country. “Vietnam gets about 10 minutes of discussion at most in a high school classroom,” Ketwig said. Out of those discussions with students came more questions. “Younger people today tell me, ‘We know it’s important but we don’t know why,’” Ketwig recalled. The books that Ketwig had read about the war didn’t entirely cover everything he thought the younger generation should know about the era and the military’s approach to the conflict.

“The basic military strategy is to wage a war of attrition,” Ketwig said. “If we do enough damage to the enemy’s population then they will change their mind. It didn’t work in Vietnam, and it certainly hasn’t worked in Iraq and Afghanistan.” Many Vietnam veterans returned home with feelings of guilt and remorse about what they experienced there. “We knew the excuse for the war was baloney,” Ketwig said. “The horror of war really changes people when you see it.” Like others, Ketwig suffers from what he calls severe post-traumatic stress “damage.” “I saw a little boy terribly, horribly burned by napalm,” he said. “PTSD, to a very large degree, is this guilt thing that is happening.” Ketwig also addresses veteran suicides, and the need for more support and mental health services. “Experts say well over 300,000 Vietnam veterans have taken their own lives since coming home,” he said. “To me, something’s wrong and not talking about it doesn’t make it better.” Personal loss is front and center, too, as Ketwig believes that exposure to the chemical Agent Orange was responsible for his firstborn son’s death at 14 days old. Ketwig insisted that his books aren’t anti-American, although he acknowledged that some will think otherwise. “I have nothing negative to say about Vietnam veterans,” he said. “I am one.” In “Vietnam Reconsidered,” Ketwig wrote, “My experiences, the things I have seen with my own eyes, and the many things I have learned from my studies have resulted in my convictions and opinions. “This book is guided by the belief that war is the most abhorrent and despicable behavior of all human endeavors, and it should not be glorified. America’s war in Vietnam and Southeast Asia was a travesty and a tragedy, and the purpose of this book is to explain how and why I came to that conclusion.” Laker Editor KAREN DILLON

Southern charm amid love and bootlegging in West Virginia

eaders fond of the whimsical 2008 best-seller “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” will no doubt be eager to check out the 2015 release by one of its co-authors, Annie Barrows. The earlier work featured eccentric characters coping with the aftermath of German occupation on their English Channel island during World War II. This novel takes place in fictional Macedonia, West Virginia, during the Great Depression, and though its residents face entirely different challenges, the small-town setting and whimsical characters will likely feel familiar to fans of the previous book. During a sweltering June in 1938, 12-year-old Willa Romeyn and her younger sister are already hot and bored with their summer vacation. They reside at their paternal aunt Jottie’s boarding house, along with their father, Felix, who moved the girls there after a divorce. We never meet the mother, and Felix comes and goes frequently as he conducts mysteriously dubious dealings out of town. Word on the streets of Macedonia is that he’s a bootlegger. Enter Layla Beck, the attractive but spoiled daughter of a wealthy Delaware senator who kicks her out of the house for refusing to marry her parents’ preferred future son-in-law. The senator cuts her off financially and uses his political pull to land her a job with the New Deal’s Federal Writer’s Project in West Virginia.

do love me some trivia. Random factoids and miscellaneous bits of superfluous details set my little heart aflutter. I can’t remember where I put my keys or the password to my Facebook page, but I can reach back into the aging datasets in my brain and recall all the words to the theme song for the “Brady Bunch.” In the pre-Google days, back before “ask Siri,” whole cocktail parties could be consumed by debates as arcane as did the actor who played Mikey in the Life cereal commercials die from eating too many pop rocks combined with soda pop — I’ll let you have a little fun looking up the back-story regarding this particular urban legend. For those of us who seek out tall tales and quirky stories, we now often traverse down the Google rabbit hole only to emerge hours later, our heads filled with fodder for our next trivia night competition. The history of our little political experiment known as the U.S. is a virtual whirlwind of strange tidbits and legends. Many of our traditions and celebrations are based on an intricate hodgepodge of circumstances and historical moments. Perhaps none of our national holidays is more trivia-dense than the evolution of what has become the celebration of our national birth. July 4, 2019, will be America’s 243rd Independence Day (yes, I looked that up). July 4 is the date that has evolved into the day we Americans celebrate our declaration of independence from Great Britain. However, technically the Continental Congress officially declared our independence on July 2, 1776. Further, the declaration itself was only fully signed by most of the members of the Continental Congress as of Aug. 2, 1776 and ceremoniously delivered to Great Britain in November 1776. Somehow, as our history evolved, the date of July 4 is what has “stuck” as our agreed-to launch date. Interestingly, it was not until 1870, almost 100 years after the declaration was penned, that Congress officially declared July 4 as a national holiday. Turns out, the selection of July 4 as the

John Adams thought we should celebrate July 2, the day the Continental Congress actually voted to become independent from Great Britain. But the official announcement wasn’t made until the 4th.

celebrated date of our declared cutting of the apron strings from England has been controversial from the very beginning. Legend has it that John Adams, our second president, believed so fervently that the true date should be July 2 that he often turned down invitations to appear at July 4 events. It’s a bit ironic that President Adams died on July 4, 1826 — the universe most definitely has a sense of humor. Two other U.S. presidents also left this world on July 4: Thomas Jefferson (on the very same day as Adams) and James Monroe. Getting back to that “fully signed on Aug. 2” business. On July 4, 1776, only one person had actually signed the declaration — this would be John Hancock, the

president of the Continental Congress at the time. I had previously pictured in my mind’s eye all the members of the Continental Congress huddled around the declaration on July 4. Turns out, that’s a bit of an urban myth: the official signing date when 50 additional signers added their “John Hancocks” to the declaration didn’t take place until August. And the last person to sign, Thomas McKean, didn’t do so until January 1777. Ain’t that somethin’? Wishing everyone a safe and happy Independence Day — on July 4.
