s kids, there was nothing better than spending the Fourth of July at Smith Mountain Lake. We’d cook hamburgers and hot dogs, and for dessert, we’d eat sweet, fresh watermelon or homemade peach ice cream. At dark, we’d get our blankets and flashlights and hop aboard my granddaddy’s Boston Whaler to go watch the fireworks display in the next cove over. If watching fireworks over the water is on your bucket list, you’re in luck. Saunders Volunteer Fire Company will host its annual Smith Mountain Lake Fireworks and Fire Company Fundraiser on July 4 at Parkway Marina. Check out our calendar, starting on page 74, for more details on this daylong, family-friendly event.

If you’re too busy entertaining friends and family this summer to bother with making sure your garden is in full bloom, our gardening columnist suggests trying self-sowing plants. Also in this issue, we take a tour of one of the eight homes on this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, plus we’ll head to Floyd to meet a master woodworker.

Sown On Their Own Meet the plants that spread their own seeds to return each year Story and Photography by CATRIONA TUDOR ERLER

Cherry tomatoes are the gift that keep on giving. Throw a few over-ripe fruit into the garden, and harvest a bountiful crop the following summer.

I

f you want colorful floral interest throughout the summer without the hassle and expense of purchasing and planting annuals each year, look no further than “self-sowers.” These are plants that return year after year, not like perennials from the roots that survive the winter, but from seeds they dropped the year before. Although many of the self-sowers aren’t winter-hardy in our climate, their seeds survive the cold and begin to germinate once the soil and weather warms. Eager and willing to grow, these are seeds that sprout readily without the aid of careful planting and care by the gardener. If you act fast, there’s still time to start planting self-sowers from seed, particularly ones that germinate and grow quickly, such as cosmos and zinnias. Otherwise, snap up a few of the remaining self-sowing plants from your favorite nursery and plant them now.

Boost Chances of Success since the native soil around the lake is generally poor, improve the odds of self-sown seeds germinating by providing a better growing medium. At the end of the season, before the seeds have fully ripened, add seed heads or seed pods to a cool, slow-rotting compost heap or bin (they’ll perish in hot compost). They will lie dormant until you use the compost to top dress your beds in spring. Light is an important trigger for most self-sown seeds to germinate. Ergo, mulch is a no-no. It will smother the seeds, burying them too deep and blocking out necessary light.

Biennials for Design Planning foxgloves and honesty (also known as money plant because of the attractive, silvery dried seed pods that resemble coins), both are prolific self-seeding biennials that flower the second year of their life. They germinate and produce

plants during the summer and autumn the first year, then sit tight over winter. In spring, they start growing again and soon flower. Biennial self-seeders can help you with planning. Note the biennial plants growing now and decide what other selfsowers you’d like growing around them. Next spring, you’ll have your mixed display.

Edible Self-Sowers many edible crops will sow themselves. For example, oriental vegetable greens, such as red mustard and mizuna, will pop up all over, year after year if some plants are allowed to flower and seed. Likewise, toward the end of the harvesting season, allow lettuce to bolt, setting flowers and seeds for next year. Another prolific selfsower is American cress, also known as creasy greens (Barbarea verna). The peppery leaves are a suitable substitute for watercress in salads and sandwiches and are delicious cooked like spinach. It also will add delight in the garden with its bright yellow flowers in spring. Cherry tomatoes are generous selfsowers. Planting requires nothing more than tossing over-ripened fruit into the garden where you think you’d like to have a crop next year. Come next spring, they’ll be sprouting, and you’ll be harvesting a bountiful crop by mid-summer. Anise, dill and fennel also are avid self-sowers. In addition to being edible, they play nicely with flowers, adding to the ornamental effect.

A Few Caveats annuals that have been hybridized to produce enormous double or complex blooms have been cross-pollinated between two or more species to create the new plant. These are likely to revert to their original genes when they self-sow. However, if they don’t return in their highly engineered form, comfort yourself by knowing that the old-fashioned, simple flowers are better for pollinating. The success of different plants selfsowing depends on many factors, including soil conditions (some plants such as Black-eyed Susan will grow and self-sow in even poor soil; others such as larkspur,

ABOVE This flower garden, featuring foxgloves and Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus), was grown from seeds tossed onto the bed in early spring. The plants self-sow every year. LEFT Bachelor buttons, also known as cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) naturalize easily at SML. BELOW Blackeyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) will selfsow each year, providing a vibrant display from midthrough late summer.

will self-sow better in a loamy bed). Water availability, sun and other variables also will affect whether or not a plant will selfsow. Here are six steps to success with selfsowers: 1. Choose plants that are known to self-sow (see sidebar for a good starting point). If you’re planting from seed, take photos of the seedlings. The following year when they come up, you can consult these photographs to identify the young plants so you don’t accidentally weed out ones you want. 2. Plant and care for your garden as usual the first year. 3. Resist deadheading. Allow some of your plants to develop and ripen seeds. You can either collect the ripe seeds and scatter them where you’d like them to grow next year, or allow them to fall where they may and see what happens. 4. Next spring, keep an eye out for seedlings that look like the annuals you grew last year. Rather than weed right away, you may need to let the seedlings mature to the point where you recognize the leaf and can identify the plant. If available, refer to the photos you took the previous spring of your young plants to help you remember what they look like. 5. In some cases, the plants reproduce so prolifically the self-sown seedlings will choke each other out. If you want to keep the self-seeding process going year after year, be ruthless about thinning out overcrowded plants. Also edit those plants that are by nature more prolific or more aggressive growers than nearby neighbors. For example, Black-eyed Susan will return with vigor year after year. Love-ina-Mist will come back, but not as prolifically. 6. Enjoy your free garden and repeat steps 3 to 5 for years to come. To cover lots of ground in a short amount of time on a skinny budget, there’s nothing like self-sowing annuals. Selfsown plants also make your garden more sustainable by allowing natural selection over generations to favor plants most suitable to the particular microclimate. You’ll have hardier plants that require less care. And as an added benefit, most self-seed-

ABOVE Zinnias, poppies, Blackeyed Susan and cosmos grew originally from a seed mixture scattered over the soil. They continue to return each year with no help from a gardener. LEFT Money plant, also known as honesty (Lunaria annua) produces seed pods that dry to a silvery sheen so they resemble coins. Disperse the ripened seeds in dappled shade where you’d like them to colonize and save the dried empty pods for an eyecatching dried arrangement.

ers are blessed with blooms that beneficial insects find irresistible, tempting pollinators, predators and parasitoids to come to your garden. It’s a win for you — and the environment. Self-sowers are largely unpredictable. They come up wherever they choose, sometimes in a distant part of the garden. Sometimes they come back in excess and sometimes not at all. Depending on your personality, the surprises you encounter as you find plants in unexpected places can be a joy or a woe. But the woe factor isn’t hard to fix. If the spot where one sprouts doesn’t work for you, just weed it out or move it to a more ideal location. Mindset makes a difference, too. Think of the areas you allot to self-sowing plants as a cottage garden or meadow. For those who enjoy serendipity and want more flowers for less work, selfsowing plants are a boon, providing an ever-increasing inventory of plants for minimal time, effort and money.

obert and Jeannie LaBella had vacationed a couple of times at both Smith Mountain Lake and Deep Creek Lake in Maryland, but Smith Mountain Lake won their hearts. What sold them was the longer summer season, the lack of restrictions on personal watercraft and waterskiing, the warmer lake water (“Deep Creek was cold even in July,” Jeannie said) and the permanence of the docks. At Deep Creek, docks were metal and had to be removed in the winter because the lake freezes. And that lake prides itself on having a winter sports season complete with snow skiing, which didn’t interest the LaBellas. They bought a lot on the Blackwater River arm of Smith Mountain Lake in 2008, but, at that time, it was difficult to get a building loan at a good rate. They rented houses to enjoy vacation time with their daughters, Rachel and Samantha, and twin sons, David and Matthew. “During those 10 years, we rented different houses, and that helped us discover what features we would want in our own home once we were able to build it,” Jeannie said. The couple said they felt fortunate to have

chosen John Brock as their builder. “He was up on all the latest ideas and materials in home building,” Jeannie said. “He was good at suggesting things and even showed us finishes in his own house to give us ideas.” Added Robert, “It was unbelievable how much money we saved with Brock’s computer visualization of the home. He could show us exactly how everything would look as if we were walking through it.” Construction began in December 2015 and was completed in April 2017. The LaBellas call their 5,600-square-foot, three-story home an eclectic contemporary. Although the entire house is designed around the kitchen on the main level and the bar on the lower level, most of the couple’s inspiration came from the website, Houzz.com. The great room is dominated by a two-sided, two-story stone fireplace, which connects to the dining area and kitchen. Eye-catching beams loom overhead, and the flooring on this level, in addition to the upstairs, features an engineered dark acacia, hand-scraped with variable length and width. Outside there is a deck with a covered section just off the great room. The kitchen

is light and bright with white cabinets and gray and white quartz countertops. Conveniently, the master suite is on the main floor, and its bathroom is quite unique. The vanity area has a stacked-stone wall behind the counter with two vessel sinks; the tub under the window is highlighted by a chandelier with bling,

Seating abounds: The LaBellas’ kitchen includes a four-seat island as well as a dining table, while the living room fireplace extends to a loft seating area on the second floor.

shorelines Lake Homes and there’s an oversized shower with a pebble tile floor. Upstairs there’s a girls’ suite with a full bathroom, including two sinks and stacked stone walls in the shower. Separating the two upstairs areas is a loft that looks down on the great room below, and includes a window seat and a fireplace. The boys’ suite is on the other side of the upper level and includes a Jack and Jill bathroom that is shared with the bunk room next door over the garage. This bathroom has two sinks with a textured granite countertop, and underfoot is a vinyl tile that looks similar to wood flooring. On the lake level, all the floors are also covered in luxury vinyl tile. This was one of John Brock’s ideas — while the material looks like wood, it costs less and is practical for an area that has heavy traffic from outside. The lower level family room has two brick walls and a huge neon bar sign. The bar itself is the main focus of this room as it has indoor and outdoor access and is separated by an oversized garage-like door. When the door is raised, the bar is open to the outside with an unobstructed view of the lake. A kitchenette in the bar space allows for convenience of snacks and light meals. This family room also includes a fireplace, a pool table, an interesting table with stools that swing out from underneath it and a welcoming patio outside. Another guest bedroom and a bathroom with access to outside are off the family room.

Old Wood, New Life Craftsman Bill St. Pierre reaches back through time to create his striking furniture and decor Story by JERRY HALE

ill St. Pierre, owner of St. Pierre Woodworking and Sawmill near Floyd, has had a fascination with woodworking since childhood. “I started building and selling birdhouses — for $2 to $3 each — when I was seven and had my first serious woodworking shop at age 21,” said St. Pierre, who now has 30 more years of experience under his tool belt. “Making furniture was a pretty common hobby back in northern Vermont.” St. Pierre moved to Roanoke in 1999 after having been recruited by E.C. Pace as a foreman for a utility construction crew. One job he worked was installing water mains along Scruggs Road at SML. By 2010, he had built his rustic-looking home on 20 wooded acres north of Floyd that he had acquired 10 years earlier. The setting is a woodsman’s dream — up a steep, forest-flanked gravel drive that boasts commanding vistas of Bent Mountain and the surrounding Blue Ridge. “We had no idea the view would be so spectacular until we cleared the building site,” he recalled. “When

the leaves fall, it’s even more panoramic.” Visitors immediately catch the sweet smell of freshly cut wood wafting out of the main shop building and 120-degree sun-powered drying kiln. The whir of a table saw comes and goes as St. Pierre’s fellow craftsmen cut and shape pieces for current projects that include slab tables, mantels, bar tops, vanities and even a massive front door for a monastery along the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway. Besides St. Pierre Woodworking’s craftsmanship, it’s the raw material that makes what is done here so special — and in demand among discerning clients opting for a wooden work of art rather than a mass-produced piece from a big-box retailer. “We work only with old wood,” St. Pierre said. “Some is reclaimed from old homes, barns and other structures we dismantle. If it’s not pre-1900, we aren’t at all interested.” Thick slabs and round pieces for tables, island tops, bars, vanities and timbers

suitable for fireplace mantels are cut from what St. Pierre terms “old growth trees.” “People contact us when they have large urban trees to take down ... or big trees that fall in a storm,” he said. “The city crews know we are eager to haul away big walnut, ash and oak trees from Roanoke’s older parks and side streets.” One of St. Pierre’s slabbing saws can cut rounds out of trees up to 65 inches in diameter. Slabs typically are left with one or more “live edges” (not sawn) for character. Normally the bark gets ground semismooth so the edge won’t collect dust or snag fabric. “It’s not unusual for old growth trees to have embedded metal where growth has engulfed fence posts, spikes or clothesline hardware,” St. Pierre said. “Regular sawmills won’t risk the damage to their expensive blades. We have saws we can easily sharpen right on site, so that’s not an issue for us. Remnants of a spike or post help give one of our slabs character you

just don’t find in manufactured furniture. “This is pretty much all junk wood,” he added, gesturing to the slabs and beams carefully stored for drying with spacers that let air flow all around them. “We just make unique things out of it.” It was when St. Pierre’s knack for reclaiming old lumber caught the attention of producers from the DIY Network television show, “Salvage Dogs,” that making hefty wooden objets d’art changed from a hobby to St. Pierre’s full-time job. “They shot an episode here at the mill about three years ago,” he said. “The week it appeared, I knew that what I love doing could become a livelihood. Since then we’ve been swamped with orders and opportunities to acquire old wood.” St. Pierre and his team took down three buildings earlier this year and have resold much of that material as raw stock. More and more, though, he and his team need to keep all the good stuff for their own custom projects. “I pretty much know every slab on site,” St. Pierre said of his 200,000 board feet of inventory. “So when someone describes what they are looking for, I can show them wood that is right for that piece. It’s typically love at first sight.” And so begins the process that might

result in a beautifully finished 40-inch by 8-foot conversation-piece dining table that is usually in the $4,000 to $5,000 price range — without the chairs. “Though we could build those to match as well,” St. Pierre said with a smile. St. Pierre Woodworking’s customers come from around the region, including Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Rocky Mount and Charlottesville. Lake residents Mark and Beth Heinzelman found St. Pierre’s slab sample display at The Floor Source at Westlake Corner. “We had a table base and were looking for a slab top,” Beth Heinzelman said. “St. Pierre finished it to our desires, with two long live edges. We couldn’t be happier.” Back in Floyd, St. Pierre and his team remain humble about their craftsmanship. “Up here on the hilltop, we keep it quaint, just doing our thing,” said Mikhael Whitlock, St. Pierre’s production manager. “The minute we get too big, we’ll lose what makes us special. We’re happy to work with anyone ... they just may have to wait in line.”

From floods to wildfires, Red Cross volunteers Earl Mannoia and Breda McAuliffe are ready to help at a moment’s notice Photo Jen Chaconas, jollyjen photography

“Hello. Yes, we heard that Hurricane Harvey struck and caused damage. We’ll come as soon as possible,” Breda answered. The couple had already notified the Red Cross online that they could be available for two weeks to help. “We knew about the potential for disaster from that hurricane from watching the telly,” said Irishborn Breda. Next they contacted the travel agent who handles transportation of Red Cross volunteers and packed their bags. “Some volunteers Story by keep bags packed FERNE and are always ready HALE to go. We’re not that organized, but it’s not like you’re packing for a holiday,” Breda explained. “You need functional clothing for two weeks — stuff that’s easy to wash and dry: T-shirts, shorts, jeans, hiking boots, sneakers and wellies (rubber boots).” In no time they were on a flight from Roanoke to Austin, Texas, where they had been assigned. By the time they arrived, the situation was reasonably under control. But things in Houston were grave. “Things change suddenly during disasters, so we were relayed to Houston,” Breda said. “Another time we were sent to Florida ahead of an approaching hurricane, but instead of hitting on the East Coast, the storm swerved west toward Pensacola. Red Cross volunteers literally chased the hurricane to be where we were needed.” In Houston, Earl worked as a government liaison, helping coordinate all the government agencies, making sure all responders were aware of what the Red Cross

was doing and learning about the needs of the community. Breda was assigned to a different Houston location to supervise activity at one of two warehouses — organizing Red Cross-donated supplies, tracking inventory, loading trucks and filling neighborhood requests for food and water. “The Red Cross is like a large corporation that comes in to aid in a disaster with logistics, feeding, sheltering, nurses, doctors,” Breda said. “And the Red Cross partners with other groups — the National Guard, veterans groups, Americorps. Police from the Bronx [New York] came in, a Red Cross group from Mexico and another from Israel arrived. It was just an amazing array of people from all over.” While the couple normally goes on three-week stints to volunteer for the Red Cross, Earl and Breda stayed in Houston for two weeks. “[M]y sister was coming to SML from Ireland for a visit we had planned ages ago,” Breda said. Breda and Earl both expressed how much they like helping others, but noted that they also are volunteers. “That means we also have a life,” Earl said. “We are eager to help when our lives allow it.” If they have a visit planned or a motorcycle trip with friends, they will not miss it. Besides, disasters aren’t resolved overnight, so there’s always an opportunity to return later and help with another stage of relief. Earl and Breda recalled how they sort of stumbled into volunteering for Red Cross. “Back in 2005, I was working in D.C., and the Red Cross headquarters was near our home,” Earl recalled. “Breda went there to volunteer with the blood program.” Breda added, “I thought the Red Cross just did blood, but during the orientation for new volunteers, I learned they do a lot more. So Earl got interested, and we began training for disaster relief. Since then

we’ve become team captains.” The work is anything but glamorous. “Sometimes we stay in a separate classroom of a shelter with other workers, or in a church hall with port-a-potties outside,” Breda said. “Sometimes the Red Cross puts us up in a hotel — trust me, there are few other hotel guests in disaster-impacted places. In Puerto Rico we were housed in a university dormitory.” Earl has traveled to California to help with some of the fires. “Every disaster is different, and after the fires, homeowners wanted sieves so they could sift through the ashes to locate jewelry or other small things that might have survived the fire,” he recalled. As captains for Franklin County, Earl and Breda also respond locally, mainly to house fires. They meet with victims, assess the situation, give them a debit card to purchase essentials, and help arrange for housing, food and clothing for

three days, after which insurance usually kicks in. For those in the county who do not have insurance, they must rely on local agencies for assistance beyond what the Red Cross can provide. While the Red Cross specializes in meeting immediate needs after a disaster, they don’t provide long-term care. Counselors continue to work with clients to help them with their recovery. In June 2012, when the derecho delivered hurricane force winds to the Eastern U.S., the Red Cross set up a cooling station in Rocky Mount, providing water, food,

shelter and a place to charge cell phones. It also served as an information center. Breda was dispatched to Greenbrier, West Virginia, to help out there for five days. The couple has traveled to New Jersey after Superstorm Sandy, and spent three weeks in Puerto Rico last year doing posthurricane emergency supply distribution. “The work in Puerto Rico was very satisfying because the people so appreciated everything,” Breda said. “The country is very beautiful. We found it to be a very gratifying experience.” “After [Hurricane] Katrina hit, we were down in Mississippi for three weeks. We returned home briefly and then went back for three more weeks,” Earl said. “For the first week, there was no cell phone service, so every shelter was like its own little outpost dealing with all its problems by itself,” Breda recalled. “People — many diabetics — couldn’t get their medicine. No pharmacies were open.

Earl has traveled to California to help with some of the fires. “Every disaster is different, and after the fires, homeowners wanted sieves so they could sift through the ashes to locate jewelry or other small things that might have survived the fire.”

ATMs didn’t work. A 2-monthold baby needed formula. People were cutting up T-shirts for diapers. And someone left several little old ladies, probably from a nursing home, on the doorstep of the shelter. We had only one overworked nurse. We were short of everything: cots, blankets, diapers, food. Finally a Walmart manager opened his store and accepted IOUs to the Red Cross. Everyone bonded. That happens in disasters.” During a disaster, needs change over time. Immediately after a disaster strikes, people need shelter and food. Then the focus shifts when residents return to their homes. After a hurricane, people need bleach, shovels and brooms so they can start cleaning up. For major disasters, the Red Cross needs volunteers for longer periods of time. Earl and Breda have been volunteering with the Red Cross for more than 13 years and are trained in several areas of disaster relief. They said they enjoy the work and find satisfaction in helping others. “It really brings out the best in people,” Breda said. “More volunteers are desperately needed in Franklin County to help with local disasters and fires. That level of involvement does not require travel or weeks of commitment.” For more information, visit www.amerianredcross.org.

Earl Mannoia stops for a photo while volunteering in Puerto Rico with the Red Cross. “We found it to be a very gratifying experience,” Breda McAuliffe said.

their laker years a summer series on couples who retired at smith mountain lake

High-School Sweethearts Became Regional Leaders The peace of lake life provided a nice contrast to David and Susan Gring’s high-profile positions leading Roanoke College and the Carilion Foundation Interview and Photography by Jerry Hale “The kids absolutely loved visiting us at the lake. So we decided this was where we would retire,” Susan Gring said. “We bought a lot in Waverly and built in 1995-96. It’s been where we wanted to be ever since.”

D

avid and Susan Gring met as juniors at Governor Mifflin High School in Shillington, Pennsylvania. Now married 51 years, their past 24 together have been at Smith Mountain Lake.

Q: What was memorable about your childhoods? David: I grew up on a too-small farm in central Pennsylvania — we raised Christmas trees and a variety of farm animals that my dad considered revenue-producing. So I didn’t have a horse! But I soon realized farming would not be in my future. Fortunately for me, my parents valued education, and I was always college destined. I attended Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster, then got my master’s and Ph.D. from Indiana University in zoology and genetics. Susan: I had brothers, and the emphasis was on first educating them for careers. But I ended up completing a three-year registered nursing program in Philadelphia. David and I got married and moved to Indiana, where he did his postgraduate work. I worked in a Bloomington hospital intensive care unit as a charge nurse. Lisa was born in Bloomington; Christian came later in Pennsylvania. I absolutely loved being a mother. Q: What happened after David finished school? Susan: He took a job teaching at Lebanon Valley College, near Hershey, Pennsylvania. After five years there, he was hired by Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he served as assistant/associate dean and then became VP for Academic Affairs. We were there 13 years. I first worked part time in a neurosurgical setting in Fargo, but found I had an affinity for elder care. I left to go back to school for a degree in long-term care administration. I even took David’s class in biomedical ethics as an independent study student, and under my maiden name to avoid being branded teacher’s wife. Even though I was sleeping with him, the professor was no pushover!

58

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER | JULY 2018

David: I knew her well enough to complain when she’d written something that wasn’t her best! While in Moorhead, Susan was instrumental in launching Fargo’s Geriatric Assessment Clinic that was modeled after a successful experiment in California and aimed to keep aging people living functionally in their own homes. She also began a hospital program that helped long-term care patients transition back to living independently. Q: How did you get from Minnesota to SML? David: I was recruited to become Roanoke College’s ninth president in 1989, and we moved to Salem. Shortly thereafter, we bought a small log home in Beechwood Shores [at SML in Bedford County] — a place to get away when we needed a break from campus demands. Susan: The kids absolutely loved visiting us at the lake. So we decided this was where we would retire — but definitely not to that house. We bought a lot in Waverly and built in 1995-96. It’s been where we wanted to be ever since. David: After 15 years at Roanoke College, I was ready to retire. Susan kept working full time as executive director of Carilion Foundation, which provided financial support to many nonprofit organizations, including several at the lake. Eight months later I got a call from Myers McRae, an executive search firm for college and university administrative positions. I’ve been doing executive search work for them ever since. David also serves on the boards of Hotel Roanoke, Jefferson College of Health and Sciences and Concordia College. “I’ve never been one of those bored retirees,” he said. Susan: David likes structure, involvement and meaningful connections. He never has to wonder, “What I will do to fill today?” David: Susan and I share a passion for gardening, and there is lots of that to do here. We do most everything but the mulching and fertilizing, which we let

Seven Oaks help us with. And I’m taking violin lessons in Rocky Mount. Susan: We’ve maintained a lot of our connections to Salem and Roanoke College, but we do love the closeness of this community. Waverly has lots of social activities, and people are quick to help one another whenever the need arises. We adore the rural setting; living here has been extraordinary. But Franklin County really needs to step up and provide amenities that will attract and serve an active population — walking trails, biking paths, a community center for events and continuing education. David: In her early years of retirement, Susan served

with various Roanoke and SML nonprofit community organizations, but now she’s taken to learning acrylic painting and drives to Roanoke for classes at the Studio School. Q: So life is good here? Susan: It is incredibly peaceful; the lake is so beautiful to look out on, swim in, kayak on. I rue the day when we might have to leave SML — like when driving to the many places we go becomes impractical, unsafe. David: We’re not people who feel the need to flee to Florida or anyplace else in the winter. There is plenty here to keep us happy year-round.

With only a few dozen members, the Huddleston Life Saving & First Aid Crew and Huddleston Volunteer Fire Dept. protect an area well over 100 square miles Story by karen dillon

Huddleston Life Saving & First aid Crew Junior Bennett was just 22 when a man named Wilford Howell from the Huddleston Ruritan Club approached him about forming a rescue squad to serve the Huddleston community. “He stopped by the house one day and asked if I wanted to join,” Bennett recalled. Fast forward to nearly a half-century later, and Bennett, along with two other original members, Charles Mitchell and Riley Overstreet, are still running calls. Mitchell’s daughter, Kim Kirby, who serves as the squad secretary, said her grandfather (Mitchell’s fatherin-law) was a first responder and the catalyst for Mitchell joining. “When he met my mom, it kind of drew him into helping,” Kirby said of Mitchell, who also served as Huddleston Fire Department’s first fire chief. Because of that strong family connection, Kirby joined the squad when she was 20. “It’s in our genes, and now my son is involved,” Kirby said of her 21-year-old son, William. “He started going on calls with us when he was just a baby and then he

just grew up in it.” Like Kirby, Holly Hogan also grew up in the squad (her father is Riley Overstreet) and now serves as its captain. Currently, there are about 15 members on the roster and, Hogan said, “Of those, 13 run calls consistently.” Whenever a call for help comes in, crew members are expected to respond. “If you can go, you go,” Hogan said. Dan Fournier joined the squad about eight years ago, but has worked as an emergency responder since 1968 while living in Vermont. “It gets in your blood, especially if you enjoy helping people,” he said. Every fourth weekend, members take turns working 48-hour shifts that begin at 9 p.m. on Friday and continue through 9 p.m. Sunday. “The people who have worked well together, we try to keep together,” said Hogan, who regularly works her designated weekend shift with Overstreet. In the past year, call logs show that the squad was dispatched to 630 calls and covered 450 of them in a coverage area of 135 square miles in Bedford County. “We have one of the largest coverage areas,” Hogan

Next year, Huddleston Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its 60th anniversary.

said. With that call volume and just more than a dozen members to answer them, Hogan said, the squad is in dire need of more volunteers. “We are always looking for new members,” she said. Although Bedford County residents are charged for ambulance trips to the hospital, that money doesn’t go directly to the rescue squad. Instead, it’s reinvested by the county to pay for rescue equipment and vehicles. To help with expenses, the rescue squad holds an annual letter drive and regularly applies for grants for equipment. The most recent grant application was submitted for an automated external defibrillator, two suction machines, as well as CPR mannequins and instruction books to offer classes to area residents. “Ours are really old, and we’d like to upgrade,” Kirby said of the mannequins. Plus, the squad’s mannequins don’t give feedback to users, which will be a requirement by the American Heart Association starting in 2019, Hogan said. Next year is also when the squad will celebrate an important milestone — it’s 50th anniversary. Anyone interested in learning more about Huddleston Life Saving Crew is

72

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER | JULY 2018

invited to attend a monthly meeting (members meet the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the squad building, 5349 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway) or visit the squad page on Facebook.

Huddleston Volunteer Fire Department Just next door to Huddleston Life Saving Crew is Huddleston Volunteer Fire Department. Lee Hogan (he’s married to life-saving crew captain Holly Hogan) was appointed fire chief earlier this year after having served as assistant chief since 2002. “I actually got into the rescue squad first,” Hogan said when asked how he became a first responder. As a kid, Hogan recalled having emergency medical technicians come help his grandmother, who lived with his family, when she fell ill. “To me that was it,” he said. “That was the main reason I got into it was seeing them help Grandma.” Hogan became an EMT and joined the rescue squad at age 16, but eventually transitioned over to the fire department. In addition to its main headquarters at 5377 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway, the fire department has three other substations where trucks and equipment are kept.

“Our first due area is 115 square miles,” Hogan said. That area spans from the Big Otter River section of Bedford County along Wyatts Way (Virginia 24) down Tolers Ferry Road (Virginia 608) to the Pittsyvlania County line. Annually, the department answers about 130 calls. “That’s a lot for us,” Hogan said. While there are 30 members on the roster (active and inactive), it typically takes about a dozen members to respond to a call, Hogan said. Like many volunteer fire departments, Huddleston is always looking for new members, but has difficulty recruiting them because of the amount of required training. “That’s our biggest thing now is the amount of training you have to have,” Hogan said. “But if they really want to do it, then it doesn’t make a difference.” For each call the department responds to, it receives a stipend from the county; however, it’s not always enough. Each year, the department conducts a letter drive to help fund the necessary vehicles and equipment. Most recently, the department upgraded its extrication equipment from hydraulic to battery-powered. “It costs a little bit more up front,” Hogan said. “But you don’t have to worry about the upkeep.” The public is invited to see and learn more about the department during an open house July 14 at its main location from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We just want to show the community what we have,” Hogan said. Later this year, perhaps in September, Hogan said he’d like for the department to host a spaghetti supper similar to ones held in years past. “It was kind of a big deal,” Hogan recalled of the previous events. “They just kind of faded away from it.” And next year, like its next-door neighbor, the fire department will celebrate a milestone anniversary — its 60th. Hogan said he’s currently kicking around plans for a celebration. For more information about Huddleston Volunteer Fire Department, visit the department page on Facebook.

A Murder of Principle Huddleston author’s Sue Coryell’s latest book is a departure from her Southern gothic trilogy

A Murder of Principle By Sue Coryell • The Wild Rose Press Inc. • 272 Pages • $14.99 on Amazon (paperback)

S

ue Coryell wants every book club in America to have a copy of her newest book, “A Murder of Principle.” Why? “There is something for everybody to relate to in this book,” she said. “And it’s not just in schools. This happens in any workplace.” The book is Coryell’s fifth, but a complete departure from her previous Southern gothic trilogy, “A Red, Red Rose,” “Beneath the Stones” and “Nobody Knows.” Set in a large, diverse high school in an urban city, the 272-page book opens with the murder of

the school’s new principal, Wendy Storme, who has been wreaking havoc since starting there earlier in the school year. “She did everything wrong that a leader could do,” Coryell said. The rest of the novel is a flashback to events leading up to the murder. “Then you have to figure out who did it and why,” Coryell added. The storyline is woven around a cast of teachers who are determined to make the school the best it can be. There’s Rose Lane, chair of the English department, in addition to Penny Bright, a somewhat naïve English department intern, and Ashante Mabana, director of the school’s English as a Second Language program, among others. After having done extensive historical research for her previous books, Coryell said she did little research for this one. While she did consult with a friend, who is a teacher in the Juvenile Detention Center, as well as researched methods of murder (“I’m not good at killing people,” she said), Coryell mainly tapped into her 30-year career as a high school English teacher. “In my teaching experience, I have had excellent principals, good ones, mediocre ones and one real stinker,” Coryell wrote in the press kit for “A Murder of

n more than one level, this is an astonishing book. First, it represents a colossal amount of research, by an eminent Civil War scholar and what appears to be a small army of diligent assistants. William C. Davis — retired executive director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies, and historian-emeritus at Virginia Tech — has almost literally unearthed the story of a woman whose life reads like a Grimm’s fairy tale. The subtitle of his opus may serve as a spoiler for the casual reader who wonders who this charming fraud might have been. For a stupendous fraud she was; even her name was a masque for her nefarious activities. Second, the book peels back, like the skins of an onion, layer after layer of the elaborate series of disguises, aliases and outright false identities by which

the subject neatly mulcted sizable fortunes from hundreds of gullible investors in her schemes. It would be impertinent in this brief review to attempt to list them all, but among the foremost is Davis’ usual spelling of her first name as “Lauretta.” Doesn’t matter, she was not Lauretta, nor Rebel soldier Lt. Harry T. Buford, nor Annie Williams, the name by which she was known in the New Orleans brothel where she once worked. But above all, she was known to her scores of victims as a woman of astounding versatility in assuming different characters, a keen eye and grasping fist for the dollar, and nerves of steel, for when confronted with bald truth about her machinations, she would stare the sucker down, denying everything, even that she had acquired five husbands and (maybe) three

Principle.” “I wondered what would happen if I imposed her on an upscale school in an active community.” Since its launch in midMarch, reviews have been favorable for Coryell’s new work. “Great murder mystery,” one reviewer wrote on Amazon.com. “I couldn’t wait to find out which of the many suspects actually was the murderer. Couldn’t put the book down! Everyone who has worked in a school or been a student in a school should get this!” As for what’s next, Coryell said she is working with a screenwriter to adapt “A Red, Red Rose” into a movie and is collaborating with her yoga instructor to write a book centered on a program involving the Monarch butterfly. “I will write the book, and she will create the descriptions of the poses,” Cory-

children, without bothering about a divorce. Lauretta’s origins were murky and obscure, deliberately so, as part of her deceptions, but she seems to have come from Louisiana, born in either 1842 or ’44 and, judging by her vast flood of correspondence, had perhaps a better education than most young women of that time. She never had the slightest compunction of going straight to the top executives, civil, military or commercial and, using a combination of feminine wiles and brass-bound nerve, persuaded them to invest in some very shaky enterprises, all of which were designed to fatten her purse. One truly remarkable thing about her operation was the number of dismal failures she concocted. But it never fazed her, and the next day she would be back with an even grander, riskier plan. Davis puts his finger on Lauretta’s pulse in noting that “the word psychology may not have been in her vocabulary, yet she grasped its meaning instinctively and used that understanding cannily.” Physically, she was about 5 feet 5 inches or 5 feet 6 in height, with a definite female figure that even a

ell said. Just last month, the Huddleston resident found herself in good company as one of a dozen authors featured on the Blue Ridge Public Television show, “Write Around the Corner,” which airs Tuesdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m. Other authors profiled on the show have included Beth Macy, Lee Smith, Sharyn McCrumb and David Baldacci. “I feel really honored to be a part of this,” Coryell said. “I am totally in awe of this whole thing.” — karen dillon Published by The Wild Rose Press Inc., “A Murder of Principle” is available in print at Westlake Library, Moneta/SML Library, Gifts Ahoy, Southern Roots and The General Store. It’s also available electronically and in print at www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com and www.wildrosepress.com.

Confederate uniform failed to conceal. Dark-eyed and dark-haired, her many victims almost unanimously described her as “handsome rather than pretty,” and beneath that ladylike exterior beat the heart of a tiger. And unblushing liar. All this being said, it remains a wonder of the age that Lauretta was able to get away with it time and again, for even the ones she swindled — by far the greater proportion were supposedly shrewd businessmen — seemed reluctant to clap her in irons. And her travels! The miles she put on her personal odometer were incredible, spanning the continent, Europe and South America, and though frequently in dire financial straits, she was always able to wheedle train fare from soft-hearted patsies. This is a fine book, an extremely well-researched and well-written book, though sometimes as tough to get through as the fog of illusion and delusion Lauretta cast over both her persona and the common sense of men with money to invest. — Richard Raymond III

Excuse Me, Where Are The ‘Clickers’?

By Kimberly Dalferes

Alighting on a modern-day quest

“H

ey babe, I’m headed to the Walmart. Do ya need anything?” “Not really. Wait, we might need AA batteries, 60-watt lightbulbs, toilet bowl cleaner, a new garden hose … we should stock up on toilet paper, paper towels, ketchup, oh, and a clicker.” “A what?” “You know, a clicker. For the grill. We’re going to have a full house next week for July 4th, and I need to be able to light the grill for burgers.” “Oh, right, a clicker.” I love lake life, I truly do. However, one teeny, tiny drawback is that one cannot just run out quickly for the dinner fixins. For most it’s a haul from front door to the local grocery store. One must plan ahead; to not do so can result in a meal consisting of freezer-burned chicken and instant potatoes. I’m also not too proud to admit to desperate searches for napkins in lieu of toilet paper … more than once. There are, of course, a plethora of minimarts in our area that can meet some quick household and kitchen item needs. Nevertheless, you do learn to maximize your weekly shopping trips and your time spent traversing the miles along Virginia 40. The local Walmart has become my go-to mecca for all things household related. As such, I headed out the door with list in hand fully prepared in my quest to ade-

quately prepare for the July 4th full house we would be entertaining. Upon entering, I selected my cart and swooped into full battle mode as I artfully maneuvered my way up and down the packed aisles. I dashed around the pileup in the soda section — some sort of mishap involving a dropped orange soda can. I stealthily whisked through the paper goods section and plucked up the paper towels and toilet paper as I sailed by. Toilet cleaner: check. Batteries: check. Clicker … uh-oh, where were the clickers? Have you ever tried to describe something to someone, but you have no idea as to the precise name of the item? An inquiry with customer service, where I asked about the location of “the clicker thingies you use to light a grill,” sent me to the sporting goods section. No dice, but I did find a well-priced, heavy-duty flashlight, which I tossed into the cart. Next I was directed to the outdoor department where I once again did not locate the clickers, but did discover two beautifully patterned pillows for the front porch chairs. Over the next hour I walked each aisle, never once spotting the elusive clicker but locating flameless candles for the foyer, a pretty blue alarm clock for the guest bedroom and my favorite brownie mix on sale. Deflated, I crisscrossed my way back to the front of the store and queued up for check-out. As I stood in line and perused the gossip magazine headlines, my eyes came to rest upon the unthinkable: there, hanging next to the playing cards and chewing gum, was a gleaming two-pack of clickers. Sometimes, the universe just likes to mess with you. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties.
