Hello, and Goodbye
I
f you’ve just moved to the area or you’re visiting here for the first time, welcome! Smith Mountain Lake is as much a beautiful oasis nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains as it is a state of mind, where the phrase, “I’m on lake time,” can be heard regularly. No matter what brought you here, we hope you enjoy all that the area has to offer. If you’re looking for a spot to eat, play, dine or stay, check out our free visitor guide, available at retailers around the lake. If you’re looking for a place to fuel up the boat or a fishing guide to take you to find citation striped bass you’ve read about, check out our fishing and marina guides, starting on page 48. Also featured in this issue is the Waro home, one of eight homes featured on this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. Now in its 30th year, the tour has contributed more than $4 mil-
lion to area nonprofits. If you’re more of an outdoorsy type, you might be interested in learning about the fantastic fungi that can be found right here in our own backyard. Stephen Kaplan of Kaplan Farms in Glade Hill shares his passion for edible mushrooms. Check it out starting on page 22. Finally, after six years of serving as Laker magazine’s editor, this will be my final issue as I’ve moved on to pursue another career opportunity. It’s been a pleasure getting to know all of you over the years, and please don’t ever stop the ideas from coming. As always, you are welcome to email them to editor@smithmountainlaker. com.

SNOWY WEEKEND AT SML Snow covered the walkway and docks behind Bridgewater Pointe Condominiums early on Sunday. The first substantial snow of the year hit Smith Mountain Lake over the weekend, dropping more than 5 inches of snow in some areas. Snowfall started late Saturday evening and continued into Sunday before mixing into sleet and freezing rain in some areas. The weekend storm caused slick conditions on several of the area roads which led to multiple cancellations on Monday including both Franklin and Bedford county schools. The Virginia Department of Transportation crews spent most of Friday pretreating roads in preparation for the snow storm. Most primary and secondary roads were cleared by VDOT by Monday.
“At the new location, customers can expect the same level of service and dining experience they’re accustomed to,” Silva said. “We look forward to seeing many familiar faces, and we’re also excited about getting to know the Mariners Landing community, and sharing our unique culinary experiences with them. A bill to regulate wakesurfing at Smith Mountain Lake wiped out in the House of Delegates last week. Del. Kathy Byron, R-Bedford, sponsored a bill in response to numerous homeowners surrounding Smith Mountain Lake agitated with wakesurfing boats — which create waves big enough for people to surf without the need of a tow rope — zooming around in the coves. The bill prompted passion-
ate feedback from wakesurfers and homeowners, who are divided on the issue. Wakesurfing has been an increasingly popular water sport at the lake. Homeowners said the wakesurfers are sending large waves crashing into the shorelines, preventing them from enjoying the water and damaging their docks. Wakesurfers said they’ve been largely courteous and aren’t responsible for dock damage. “This is creating big problems, and as you might imagine, a lot of division,” Byron said. Byron’s bill would have kept wakesurfing 200 feet from the shoreline. She was going to try and change it to 150 feet from the

The Silvas’ plans also include opening a wine shop and gourmet market called Bottles & Bites. “The wine shop will be open to the public and will feature wine and craft beer, a gourmet market with grab-and-go food items, and gifts,” said Tiffany T. Silva Silva, noting that she’s also working to organize a weekly farmer’s market starting in the spring. “Bruno and I have cherished our time as part of the Bernard’s Landing community, but are excited about expanding our brand and our business offerings significantly by moving to Mariners Landing,” she said. “We are thrilled with the new direction the resort is heading, and this is an exciting opportunity for us, our family and our staff.” Perrow said discussions began earlier this year to move The Landing to Mariners Landing. He said he keeps in touch with the Silvas and what started as casual conversations became a reality very quickly. “Bruno and Tiffany are uniquely qualified to direct the
Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christopher Finley announced his resignation effective Feb. 26 after having served in the role since late 2019. Finley will leave the chamber’s top job to take a position as director of marketing and public relations at LewisGale Regional Health System, a part of HCA H e a l t h c a r e ’s Capital Division, based in Salem. Finley The chamber’s
executive board has appointed a search committee led by Chairman Zach Wimmer to conduct a search for the organization’s next executive director. The board of directors has appointed Cheryl Ward to serve as interim executive director during the transition period. Finley will also continue to support the organization as needed to ensure a seamless transition. “On behalf of the board, and the community, while we’re disappointed to see Chris step down, we wish him continued success,” Wimmer said. “Chris assumed his role at a time of transition and has done a great job leading our organization during a difficult year.” Despite the challenges of 2020, Finley helped start the SML Leadership Academy with 14 participants in its inaugural class and secured $30,000 in grant marketing funds from Virginia Tourism Corporation. With that funding, the chamber launched tourism initiatives, including a monthly consumer e-newsletter, a destination travel blog, a new brochure and a commercial to market Smith Mountain Lake. Additionally, Finley achieved enrolled the most-ever participants in the 2021 Chamber Champions program. He also developed the framework for two new tourism initiatives to launch this spring, including SML Restaurant Week and a SML Getaway Sweepstakes campaign. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served as executive director and I’m proud of the accomplishments and new initiatives we’ve executed during my tenure,” Finley said. “Backed by a
Landing Restaurant to move to Huddleston The Landing Restaurant, a longtime fine-dining establishment at Bernard’s Landing, will relocate to Mariners Landing in Huddleston later this year following an announcement last week. Lake residents Bruno and Tiffany Silva, owners of The Landing Restaurant, will move to a waterfront location at The Pointe at Mariners Landing. The restaurant will be open to the public and accessible by boat or car. An opening date has not been set, but Tiffany Silva said they hope to be operational by May 1. This will be the most recent change at Mariners Landing following its purchase last year by real estate developer Waller Perrow and business partner Tom Branch. The two have spent the past few months reshaping the golf and lake community with several improvements and additions. In addition to relocating The Landing, Perrow said the Silvas will oversee all catering and special events at the resort, will establish a private restaurant at the golf clubhouse called Bruno’s and operate a seasonal poolside

Soapstone walls exposed by mining that began in the 1800s make for arresting and unique features at Armand and Bernice Thieblot’s Quarry Garden. Plants seen here include (from opposite page clockwise): Eastern red columbine (Aquilegia canadensis); reindeer lichen (Cladonia rangiferina); thimbleweed (Anemone virginiana); soapstone wall; turk’s cap lily (Lilium superbum); shaggy mane or lawyer’s wig mushroom (Coprinus comatus).

ust a two-hour drive from the lake is an extraordinary garden that is worth visiting at any time of the year. Called The Quarry Gardens at Schuyler, this 40-acre garden devoted to native Virginia plants was opened to the public in April 2017. From the late 1800s until recently, a succession of mining companies made Schuyler the soapstone capital of the world. There were at one time more than 50 quarries in the immediate area. The quarries provided the raisons d’être for the small community of Schuyler (where Earl Hamner of “The Waltons” fame was born and raised). Six of those quarries were on the land that is now The Quarry Gardens. Historians estimate that in the 20 years that those six quarries were active, some 800,000 tons of soapstone were removed from site, and 600,000 tons of quarried stone were discarded here. The workers left, but the great holes that were created in the earth by the quarrying remained as water-filled pools. These holes became a
preferred local dumping site, and the deserted woods a favored trysting place. The trash mounted and the non-native invasive weeds flourished. In 1991 Armand and Bernice Thieblot purchased 440 acres of this neglected land as their weekend retreat from their busy lives in Baltimore, where they had a consulting business providing marketing communications for colleges and universities. At the time they made the purchase, they never dreamt they would one day create a landmark garden on 40 of the acres, but they were able to see the land’s potential despite the mess. After they purchased the house and acreage, they spent time during their weekend visits clearing out the invasive plants and picking up the rubbish, which included unwanted, rusted appliances such as discarded refrigerators and washing machines, bedsprings, and smaller Giant soapstone staircases give debris such as empty bottles and cans, access to new areas and even discarded shoes. of the gardens. The cleanup project picked up Left: An enormous momentum in 2013 when the Thieblots soapstone rock retired and moved to the property full marks the entrance.

time. Since then, Armand estimates that they have collected 100 tons of trash. They also have removed truckloads of invasive plants, including autumn olive and Miscanthus. As they restored the land to a more pristine condition, the couple realized they wanted a project that would use this beautiful land while still conserving its nature. They mulled the question until they found their answer when they visited Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Butchart Gardens was created in the early 20th century by Jennie Butchart. She restored the scarred land of her family’s exhausted limestone quarry by planting a series of garden rooms. She opened the gardens to the public; they now attract more than a million visitors a year. The Thieblots had their quarry, including two pools with dramatic, sheer
soapstone faces that were formed as water seeped into the deep quarry pits. They decided they also would create a garden. Rather than creating a showplace of exotic plants like at Butchart, they wanted to celebrate the native flora and fauna as well as the quarrying history of their land. “We also thought our quarries had good bones, and we wanted to do something that showcased them,” said Armand. They identified 40 acres of their property for the project and set aside 400 adjoining acres in a Virginia Outdoors conservation easement, thus creating a permanent buffer from development, and protecting the viewshed. In 2016, Virginia’s then-governor Terry McAuliffe designated that land a Virginia Treasure. In 2019, the Thieblots added another 150 acres to buffer the south edge of the gardens.
RIP RAP • DREDGING BEACH SAND • BOAT DOCKS
For the garden’s master plan, they hired the Charlottesville-based Land Planning and Design Associates (LPDA), a firm specializing in landscape architecture and land planning. The result of LPDA’s work was a map outlining trails and roads to circumnavigate the two quarry pools, viewing spots for overlooks, a parking area, and a proposal to repurpose the existing Quonset hut for a visitors’ center. The Thieblots were delighted with the overall design for the paths leading visitors through the acreage, but opted out of the firm’s recommendation to bring in improved soil (Jennie Butchart had imported tons of topsoil for her quarry garden, transporting it into the quarry by horse cart). They realized they would not achieve what they wanted if they didn’t pay attention to the geology and the native soil. Indeed, both are unusual. The local

Funny Flora Unusual plants grown at The Quarry Gardens at Schuyler Hearts-a-bustin’ Top • The European cousin of hearts-a-bustin’, Euonymus europaeus, is called the spindletree because the hard, strong wood was used to make the sharp, pointed spindles on spinning wheels. The story of Sleeping Beauty pricking her finger on the spindle and falling into a deep sleep was based on the false belief that the wood was toxic enough to put you into a coma if you pricked your skin with it or inhaled the wood dust.
Rabbit Tobacco Left • Young rural boys would smoke rabbit tobacco as substitute for real tobacco. An Alabama tribe used it to wash people who suffered from nervousness and insomnia caused by the “pestiferous spirits” of the dead. The medicine men of the Creek tribe (original residents of the American southeast) used a rabbit tobacco wash for elderly people who had trouble sleeping. They also decocted it into a tea for people being harassed by ghosts. It is considered to have pain relieving and decongestant properties and is a mild sedative. Worried about non-FDA-approved herbals? Try the age-old remedy of putting a pouch of Rabbit Tobacco in your pillowcase.
Indian Pipe Right • The mystical look of the Indian pipe inspired a Cherokee legend. Looking down on the tribal elders, the Great Spirit saw them smoking the peace pipe before they had actually agreed to a peace. Irate that they had broken his law, he turned the disobedient smokers into the Indian pipe flowers. They are an annual reminder that sacred rules are not to be broken. The genus name is a combination of mono, Greek for one, and tropos, meaning to turn, referring to the fact that the flower turns once from looking downwards to skyward after pollination. Once pollinated, the flower head becomes a woody seed capsule that looks like a poppy pod. When the seeds are ripe, the pod breaks open in five slits that allow the seeds to shake out. The seeds have almost no built-in nourishment to fuel growth. Like the parent plant, they must rely on fungus in the soil to grow. — CTE

soapstone is composed of magnesium, talc, and other minerals. “The soapstone makes the soil pH alkaline, which is not typical of the Piedmont,” said Dorothy Tompkins, a retired physician who has served as president of both the Piedmont Master Gardeners and Rivanna Master Naturalists. “With slightly alkaline soil and the plant communities it fosters, the Schuyler Quarry Garden is the premier native plant garden in our area,” she added In May 2015, the Thieblots hired Devin Floyd, a geologist, naturalist, archaeologist, and founder of the Center for Urban Habitats (CUH) in Charlottesville, to conduct a survey of the existing biota. Floyd began cataloging the flora and fauna of the land, assisted by Rachel Bush Floyd and Drew Chaney, at the time a home-schooled high school student with a passion for botany. The resulting surveys, which continued through late summer 2019, produced a consolidated list of more than 850 species—some 550 flora (503 native) and 300 fauna. They also found 56 species that were not previously reported in Nelson County. With the information gleaned from the land survey, the team divided the land into 14 ecozones and seven conservation areas. In the ecozones, they used “indicator” plants to determine what would naturally grow in those areas. To enrich these ecozones, the Thieblots’ team have propagated and planted more of the indigenous flora, as well as adding about 100 other native genera and species that will thrive in those soil and microclimate conditions. Today, the garden is home to the largest documented number of Virginia native plants of any botanical garden in the commonwealth. In the conservation zones the focus is existing plant communities, not introducing any new genera or species. Some of these plants found in the conservation zones are local genotypes so specific to this land they have yet to be positively identified. Together in both the eco and conservation zones, the CUH staff alongside willing volunteer helpers, have planted

Winter • Even during the quiet of winter, there are wonders to see in the gardens. The huge colony of reindeer lichen (Cladonia rangiferina) is thought to be one of – if not THE – largest in Virginia. It is a sight to behold at any time of year, but a focal point in winter. The evergreen Christmas ferns (Polystichum acrostichoides) and the persistent red hips of the pasture rose (Rosa carolina) add color to the scene. More subtle is the shiny gray-brown bark and the pinecone like catkin blossoms appearing on the smooth alders (Alnus serrulata) in February. The male catkins droop in clusters; the female flowers stand upright. Spring • Spring is a rich time of year in the
industry in Schuyler. Online, you can also explore the computerized database with the list of all the native flora in the gardens arranged by location. And to celebrate the history of the region, there is a charming scale model of the historic Nelson and Albemarle railroad, which transported soapstone products to market. The model, with a beautifully painted diorama background by Bret Jones of Rail Tales in Charlottesville, includes the small town of Esmont, a quarry site, the New Alberene Stone company shop, and Rockfish Junction. Over the centuries, the Thieblots’ land has gone through many transformations from wilderness to soapstone quarry, to rubbish dump, and now to a garden that celebrates the region’s quarrying history as well as the unique local flora and fauna. Once best known as the “Soapstone Capital of the World,” then as the childhood home of Earl Hamner, creator of “The Waltons,” now Schuyler is known as the home of The Quarry Gardens, one of the most important native plant gardens in Virginia.

gardens. In addition to fairly common and wellknown native plants such as wild ginger (Asarum canadense), moss phlox (Phlox subulata) and spring beauties (Claytonia virginica), you’ll find beauties such as the clematis known as curlyheads (Clematis ochroleuca), yellow trillium (Trillium luteum), and eastern shooting stars (Dodecatheon meadia). Mushroom hunters might find morels, one of the more than 40 species of fungus that have been found in the Quarry Gardens.
Summer • In the summer you’ll see butterflies as well as pretty little flowers such as thimbleweed (Anemone virginiana) with its thimble-like seedhead; the orange, freckled Turk’s cap lilies (Lilium superbum); passionflowers; quill fameflowers (Phemeranthus teretifolius); ladies tresses (Spiranthes) and cranefly orchids (Tipularia discolor); and Indian pipes (Monotropa uniflora). The eerie looking Indian pipes are also known as ghost or corpse plants because they are waxy white with translucent scale-like leaves, flowers and stems. It is one of 3,000 species of plants in the world that do not derive their energy from photosynthesis. The best time find them is after a summer rain when the plants spring up from the ground overnight. Fall • Plants with evocative common names enchant in the autumn months. Look for the eye-catching fruit of hearts-a-bustin’, also called strawberry bush (Euonymus americanus), rabbit tobacco (Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium), the yellow-flowered partridge pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata), blue wood asters (Symphyotrichum cordifolium)

Many of us may not give mushrooms a second thought. We walk right by them on our hikes and may wonder if they are poisonous or not, but keep going. We see them growing in our yards, on the side of trees and beside downed rotting tree limbs. Mushrooms actually are vital to the earth’s ecosystem. Without mushrooms there would be no soil, only eroded soil and volcanic soot, and likely no grass or trees, either. Stephen Kaplan, also known as “The Mushroom Guy” and owner of Welcome Home Farms in Glade Hill, is a true believer in mushrooms and all of their virtues. According to Phys.org, scientists believe that the first mushrooms evolved on earth between 715 and 810 million years ago. Today there are around 15,000 identified species of mushrooms all over the world, with thousands that have yet to be identified. Kaplan insists mushrooms are misunderstood. “Most people come to my classes thinking that most mushrooms are poisonous,” he said. “Which is completely false.” In fact, roughly 50% of mushrooms are inedible, but harmless, 25% of mushrooms are edible but not tasty, 20% are poisonous, but aren’t deadly, 4% are edible and tasty, and 1% will kill you, according to Kaplan. Kaplan’s love affair with mushrooms began in 2015 when, after exploring in the woods, he came upon a large cluster of oyster mushrooms growing out of a downed log. He took a quick close-up picture with his camera and shared it to his Facebook Stephen Kaplan, page. A chef, who’s also a owner of Welcome friend, from Charlotte comHome Farms in mented that he would pay Glade Hill, holds indigo milkcap Kaplan $25 for them. After mhsrooms. Profile Virginia turns out to be a terrific place to forage mushrooms, Kaplan said. “Anytime it’s above 50 degrees, you can harvest.” About 4% of mushrooms are edible and tasty, he said. Left: Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Kaplan was conducting mushroom foraging classes through the Franklin County Parks and Recreation and other organizations. Below: The shaggy-looking Lion’s Mane mushroom.
With help from a family friend, Kaplan educated himself about mushroom varieties, cultivation and harvesting. He soon began cultivating mushrooms inside a humidity and climate-controlled storage building on his property, while also continuing to forage for mushrooms on his property and on others’ private lands with permission. Kaplan sells his cultivated crop to both individuals and local restaurants, including The Water’s Edge Country Club, as well as River and Rail and Local Roots restaurants in Roanoke. While selling harvested mushrooms from the wild to individuals is allowed, selling to commercial entities requires certification from the Virginia Department of Agriculture, which Kaplan has yet to obtain. Once that certification is obtained, Virginia allows 20 mushroom species to be foraged. Virginia turns out to be a terrific place to forage mushrooms, Kaplan said. “Anytime it’s above 50 degrees, you can harvest, so April through November, with summertime being optimum, are the best times to hunt for these fungi.” When asked what attracted him to mushrooms, Kaplan said, “They are really fascinating. They show up after weather events and go to work

One in Oregon is more than 2,400 years old and spans 2,400 acres (about 4 square miles). Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Kaplan was conducting mushroom foraging classes through the Franklin County Parks and Recreation and other organizations. With the pandemic restrictions lifting he said he is ready to resume classes for groups and individuals. In his classes, he educates his students on the myriad of edible mushroom species, including the “Virginia Big 20,” as he calls it. Those are the mushrooms the Virginia Department of Agriculture has deemed edible or that can be used for medicinal purposes. Also, in Kaplan’s classes, he offers mushroom identification basics through a field guide. The field guide helps people identify mushrooms in a step-by-step observation process, which starts by identifying the cap, spores, gills and attachments. This simple observation technique can have you on your way to being your own amateur mycologist.

hen cruising the Roanoke arm of the lake above the bridge near R32, you can’t help but notice a blue, Craftsman-style home with 300 feet of shoreline and large boulders holding back the hillside in front of the house. This is the Waro home that will be one of the eight homes featured on the SML Charity Home Tour, which will run from Oct. 8 through 10. Before building their home, Marci Waro recalls her first instruction to architect Eric Buck: “When I walk in the front door, I want to see the lake.” That was achieved, with a lovely view from entryway through the great room and to the inviting screened porch. But don’t miss the massive oak armoire from 1800s England that serves as an entryway closet. “It was built in England from American oak in nine pieces that fit together without the benefit of screws,” said Marci’s husband, Paul. The home has clean, crisp Craftsman-style lines and details on the windows and doors. The interior walls are light gold, a perfect backdrop for the dark wooden built-ins and cabinets crafted by Rutrough Cabinets of Rocky Mount. This functionally-designed home has the main living areas in the middle, flanked by a master suite with an enormous shower at one end and a comfortable guest suite at the other end of the house. This pattern repeats on the lower level with guest suites on each end of a spacious entertaining area. Descending to the lower level, the staircase features metal railings that were crafted by the couple’s son-in-law, who owns Elite Ironworks in Rocky Mount. “Down here is where the house becomes western,” Marci said of the lake level that includes several western-themed paintings by Paul’s father. Adding to the theme is a Colorado-made, 7-foot-long log sofa, an authentic life-sized cigar store Indian and the pelt of a 300-pound bear Paul

bagged with bow and arrow in Idaho. Here, too, is where mementos from his career with Snap-On Tools are displayed in a case styled as an old-time gas pump. Floors on this level are an eye-catching, stained concrete with a shiny epoxy finish. “Concrete can be cold, so we had hot water radiant heating installed before the concrete was poured,” Paul said. The Waros found a huge Mexican bar in an online auction that they somehow moved into their lake level, where Paul resurfaced the top with shiny epoxy. He also built matching cabinetry and countertop behind the bar. “He’s really creative,” Marci noted, “but also knows how to make things happen.” Paul’s DIYepoxy surfacing shows up again in the guest bathroom countertops on this level. “Most everything in this house has a story,” Marci said.

s Smith Mountain Lake has evolved into the recreation and retirement destination we see today, the businesses that serve its residents and visitors have changed, too. A precious
few have been here since the early days, when “grocery shopping” meant a quick trip down two aisles at the country store, and have morphed into larger operations that meet a wider range of needs. On the following pages are a few examples.

Diamond Hill GENER AL STOR E
U
nquestionably the lake’s oldest business, Diamond Hill Store dates back to 1857 — it had been here for 109 years when SML reached full pond in 1966! Current owners Christine and Carl Brodt, settling here from Long Island in 1991, purchased it at auction after it had stood vacant for eight years. “We must’ve been crazy,” Chris reflects. Both had retired from Grumman Aerospace and were planning an easy life at the lake but decided the Diamond Hill area needed a place that sold milk, bread and eggs. “Easy retirement ... right!” she says sarcastically. Adds Carl: “26 years at Grumman and 28 here at the store! What’s with that?” After some minor renovations — Carl

is an engineer who had dabbled in carpentry — the Brodts operated the market out of the former Debo’s store building for 14 years. Then Carl spent a year building an addition that is now the main store. He brought in Citi Service gas pumps in 2003 and, with the help of arriving brotherin-law Robert Matzuga, added a garden shop a few years later. “Garden items grew to about 30% of our business and brought lots of people into the store,” Carl said. History on Debo’s is a bit scant. There are some bullet holes in the old store ceiling that have rumored relationship to James Debo’s death in 1903, which ended a spat with a “friend.” Debo relative Betty DeLong still works at the store, but has no further details to offer. Discovered artifacts include several bottles

labeled “Lithium Water — Buffalo Water from Lithia Springs,” crocks and liquor bottles. Some original store shelving is still used to display a broad selection of Virginia wines. Burlap, probably from feed bags, was the original “carpeting,” and an apartment had been built below the floor. A small building out back housed the Diamond Hill Post Office, and was nicknamed “Jimbo” after James, who served as postmaster. The store’s name changed from Debo’s to Diamond Hill due to the church of that name on the nearby corner. Virginia 655 was later named Diamond Hill Road after the store. Currently, Diamond Hill General Store is known for a killer coleslaw which, Chris Brodt notes, “People come from Lynchburg, Salem and Rocky Mount to buy. “We’re looking forward to life after the pandemic,” she added, noting that a surge in takeout business helped keep the store afloat the past 18 months. “We hope to begin offering wine tastings and music soon. Lots of musicians are lining up to again play on our deck.”

akers in the Scruggs area often refer to Brownie’s, an unimposing brick building sitting alone at 2837 Scruggs Road, as “the place to find stuff you can’t find anywhere else.” You won’t necessarily spot your item on the shelves. But if you don’t, just ask at the back counter where David Saunders (a Brownie’s employee for 30 years), Annette Patrick (Glenwood and Agnes Brown’s daughter, also a 30-year veteran of the store) or Annette’s former husband John Patrick (21 years with Brownie’s) will guide you to the item you need. Sometimes it’s in the back room behind the counter, a mysterious labyrinth rumored to still stock parts moved over from Brownie’s original Bremble Drive location in 1978. When one of the counter crew says, “Just a minute ...” and heads back there, they’ll likely return with the license plate bulb

for your ‘76 Pinto in hand! The store’s history actually predates the former Bremble Drive building. Brownie — “Glenwood” by birth certificate only and deceased in 2012 from heart medication complications — had married Agnes more than 50 years ago. Both were locals; she was sewing pockets on uniforms at a dress factory in Rocky Mount — “24 to a dozen,” she says of the two-per-uniform piece rate that determined her paycheck — and he worked at Bedford’s Rubbertex helping make hydraulic hoses, divers’ wet suits and the like. But Brownie was a motor head, and started a side business selling auto parts from the trunk of his car—taking orders from fellow Rubbertex employees and delivering them during shift changes. He quit the factory in the late ’70s and built the Bremble Drive store not far from the couple’s home.

As lake-area customers began requesting hardware, marine supplies and lawn and garden items, the store’s inventory expanded. “Capps, after all, was all the way over in downtown Moneta at the time,” Agnes notes. The new, larger store Brownie built on Scruggs Road enabled the expansion: “Missed sales told us of new items we should stock,” she said. Today’s customers include lake property owners and visitors, of course, but also auto repair shops in the surrounding area. “The new chain auto parts stores make it tough,” Agnes admits, “but we are one of two independents within 50 miles that have managed to survive. We stock hard-to-find items, are very competitive on price, and our knowledgeable people are willing and able to help. That’s the secret.” As for the future, Agnes, 72, glances at the ceiling of the cramped office tucked behind the drawers of bulk nuts, bolts, screws, washers, cotter pins and assorted other fasteners at the back of the store: “I just don’t know what more the Good Lord has planned for me,” she says. “But He doesn’t let everybody live this long, so He just might have something in mind.”
When one of the counter crew says, “Just a minute ...” and heads back there, they’ll likely return with the license plate bulb for your ’76 Pinto in hand! Brownie’s founder Glenwood Brown (left) and shown above with members of store staff.

Lakeside M AR INA
D
ickie Dill, trading as Penhook’s Lakeside Marina, started selling fishing lures and live nightcrawlers off of a picnic table on the dock while he was building the marina building on 40 acres at the foot of Smith Mountain — lakefront land he bought in 1967 for $1,000 per acre. “I slept under the table while I was framing the first shed,” Dill recalls. “There were just two boats in the marina that first winter. I doubted I could make a go of it — especially when a spring storm in ’69 blew everything we had into the back of the cove. Neighbors helped me drag what was salvageable out of the water.” But he was determined, and Lakeside is now home to some 80 boats and 35 mobile homes. Dill also began driving pilings in 1967, one of just three dock builders operating on the lake at the time. He paid his first employee $30 a week plus primitive room and board. Retail sales ended in 1987, but Dill, age 77, is still dropping riprap and doing other waterfront improvement. Known in the industry for prowess with his barge crane and other heavy equipment, he really enjoys accomplishing a task that others consider “impossible.”
“There were just two boats in the marina that first winter. I doubted I could make a go of it.” A few items on open air shelves comprised the “marina store” (right) until the first building was completed (above). Opposite page: The area before and during construction.

Reel ’Em In: Striper Fishing Striper fishing remains a popular pastime at Smith Mountain Lake for all ages. Anglers use a variety of methods, such as drifting live bait, trolling plugs and bucktail jigs or casting top water lures. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries limits SML catches to 2 per day in the aggregate. There is no length limit from June 1 to Oct. 31, though no striper between 30-40 inches may be caught from Nov. 1 to May 31.
