SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER JUNE 2019
Editor’s Note June 2019
S
everal years ago, I received a stand-up paddleboard as a Christmas gift. I’d never really started using it regularly until last year. And you know what? There’s nothing more refreshing than grabbing my board and getting out on the water. The warm breeze, the ripples in the water and the smell — yes, there’s a smell — of summer. It’s so relaxing and a great way to see the sights on the lake! However, now that boat traffic is picking up, it’s important to have a heightened sense of awareness while on the water, not just on paddleboards, but also on boats and around docks. We’ve compiled some summer boating and swimming tips starting on page 57. Also in this issue, we meet Greg and Susan English, who share their passion for using repurposed materials in their home. Plus, our gardening columnist illustrates why there’s a growing trend of using recycled rusted metal elements in your garden and offers suggestions for deploying them at your dock, too. Finally, we have a profile of Hope to Walk, a nonprofit that provides low-cost prostheses to people living in developing countries. It has ties to folks right here in our community. If you have ideas for stories, send us an email at editor@ smithmountainlaker.com. We’d love to hear from you!
Striper fishing is a fun sport for all ages. Anglers can use a variety of methods to catch them, including booking a guide or a charter service. Check out our list on page 65.

any of the items found in Greg and Susan English’s home have been repurposed — they are discarded items or objects that once were something else and are now used in another way. Much of the wood throughout the home, including trim around the windows and doors, moldings, accent walls, baseboards, countertops, vanity tops and tabletops, as well as several pieces of furniture, came from trees that once grew on the 6-acre property. “We had 64 tall trees cut. One tree was saved to use ‘as-is’ for the front porch post, and the remainder was taken to a farmer’s mill near Rocky Mount,” Greg said. “The oak, hickory and wormy maple trees yielded 7,200 board feet of lumber; 8-inch-by-8-inch posts were for mantels and accent beams and smaller posts for table legs.” After it was kiln-dried, the white oak pieces were then cut to size for the baseboards and window and door trims. The rest of the wood was cut into planks and delivered to the property. Fortuitously, the couple built a 30-foot-by-36-foot outbuilding where they stored their wood and wood-
working tools — many of which were purchased from Craigslist or rummage sales. During the home’s construction, Greg and Susan toiled in the barn to ready the wood for accent walls in several rooms and to make countertops and vanities. Upon relocating to the lake from Houston two years ago to supervise and help with construction, the couple rented a home in Waverly. There, they met neighbor Jon Wisnieski, who had done a lot of the construction on his own home and was open to lending tools and advice. At one point, when Greg inquired about jointing boards into an extra-long countertop, Jon introduced him to Rick McKown, who had the tools, as well as the know-how, for the job. Equipped with their harvested planks, borrowed tools and newfound jointing expertise, Greg and Susan created a large craft table, tops for the many vanities they were making out of castaway furniture pieces, wooden countertops, rolling ottomans and shelves. In the couple’s master suite, the wall behind their bed is covered with repurposed metal barn siding purchased from Craigslist. In the kitchen, sheet metal, purchased in specific sizes and aged with a vinegar, peroxide and salt solu-

A fireplace surround is the same metal, but since it was treated after being hung on the wall, the resulting finish is different from the backsplashes albeit just as appealing. This couple solved the problem of guests crowding into a messy kitchen by having two food preparation areas. The main part of the kitchen is open to the great room, delineated by a large island with room for friends to interact with the chef. The decorator stools are one example of Susan’s shopping prowess: she bought them on sale for $12 each, cut off the legs to a suitable height and added island-mounted black iron foot rests that once were steps on the outside of a train car. Susan’s bargain hunting also led to her finding 12 identical chairs from a restaurant for $135 for their dining room. “We just cleaned them up and painted them,” she said. Two mechanic’s tool chest cabinets, covered by an oak countertop, provide a spacious island workspace. The couple’s 10-foot shared office desk is crafted from a former conference table that was narrowed to 36 inches and mounted on filing cabinets. To say that Susan loves repurposed furniture might be an understatement as she’s bought truckloads of it at area rummage sales, including Joyous Junque and Trinity Treasures, as well as from the Habi-
tat for Humanity ReStore and the Discovery Shop at Smith Mountain Lake. Dozens of old doors have been turned into accent walls, headboards and bed platforms. Susan and Greg have made bathroom sink vanities out of old desks and tables — once considered someone’s junk but now repainted, they are functional and beautiful. At one Joyous Junque sale, Susan spotted a dresser being unloaded that looked like a stack of old suitcases and snapped it up before it reached the ground. Susan also uses actual vintage, leather-looking suitcases as part of the home’s decor. “I got those for storage when we lived in Houston,” she explained. “Houses there don’t have basements, and you can’t put anything in the attic because of the heat, humidity and bugs. So I store things in these vintage suitcases, and they provide an interesting decorator accent.” Outside, with more than 600 feet of shoreline, the couple wanted to take

advantage of their sweeping lake view while creating a low-maintenance home. “We didn’t want to have to paint the outside, so we got high-end imitation cedar siding made from PVC,” Greg said. “We saw three other houses on the lake that used this PVC material, and we liked the look and the practicality.” The exterior also uses Galvalume, a corrugated metal coated with a clear finish to prevent rust. “Glass deck railings didn’t meet our maintenancefree hurdle,” Greg said. “Instead, we devised metal railings from sturdy Texas ‘hog wire’ — perfectly industrial looking, strong and absolutely maintenance-free.” Next on the couple’s to-do list: fabrication of three dining tables for the dining room, the deck and the TV area. When asked about the inspiration for such a unique residence, Susan cited Pinterest and Houzz, and it all works beautifully. Coupled with innovative design, clever use of carefully-chosen materials is a big part of what makes the English home unique. A flare for furnishing and decorating adds eye-popping finishing touches.

Rust is the latest rage in the garden. The trend has been building for some time, but has reached enough momentum to register as one of the top three most influential garden trends, according to a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Landscape Professionals. The other top trends were pergolas and maximizing tiny gardens with spaces designed for multiple uses. The growing trend of adding rusted metal elements has been noticed at Lon-

don’s world-renowned Chelsea Flower Show where designers are incorporating dramatic features made of weathering steel that develops a durable, rust-like appearance when left outside. Known by U.S. Steel’s trademark name COR-TEN (sometimes written as corten), the two syllables refer to the two distinguishing properties of this type of steel: corrosion resistance and tensile strength. The material gets harder over time when exposed
to weather. Like Kleenex brand name for facial tissues, the name COR-TEN has become synonymous with any weathering steel. Designers are incorporating this material with its beautiful, mottled brown patina in many ways. steel retaining walls. In Portland, Oregon, this latest design trend has been active for at least 10 years. Laura Crockett of Garden Diva Designs in Hillsboro, Oregon, was one of the first. She said she was inspired when she saw a rusted out old car emerging from the green undergrowth in Hawaii. She was struck at how beautiful the oxidized metal looked against the lush tropical foliage. In her own garden, she repurposed sheets of rusted expanded metal that had been removed from the roof of a remodeled industrial building. She used them to create a screening wall surrounding her patio. The pierced pattern allows air to circulate and gives a scrim-like view to the garden space on the other side. The entrance to her front garden is framed by a modern, rectangular arch made of square metal girders. These girders also serve as the structure to secure the polycarbonate walls that surround the space. Michael Schultz of Michael Schultz
The warm tones of the burnt orange patina are a pleasing contrast to the cool greens of most plants and create a visual richness. Landscape Design in Portland created a pergola for a narrow space between two properties. The arching steel beams reach down to wedged steel capitals that top wood-clad support posts. The rusty browns of the metal and stained wood make the greens of the hostas, rodgersias and astilboides planted along the length of the long walkway pop with freshness and life. At Smith Mountain Lake, an arbor or gazebo built of oxidized steel would be an appealing echo to the steel posts that support most of our docks. Farther
from the water, consider a raised bed or retaining wall made of weathering steel or edge your beds with steel strips. The one caveat is that water running off weathering steel will stain surfaces such as patios and decks if they are too close. Solve the problem by placing weathering steel features where water running off the metal won’t end up on the paved surface. In the right setting, COR-TEN is both durable and beautiful. The warm tones of the burnt orange patina are a pleasing contrast to the cool greens of most plants and create a visual richness that occurs when you combine colors opposite each other on the color wheel. The overall effect is the epitome of what gardening is — the human touch on the natural world brought together in harmonious combination that will make your flowers and foliage look their best. Experiment with rusted elements in your garden. Not only will you beautify your outdoor space, you’ll also be hip to one of 2019’s top gardening trends.

Huddleston NOBLE NAMESAKE, VENERABLE COMMUNITY Story by ANNE REYNOLDS

S
urrounding Smith Mountain Lake Parkway in Bedford County lies a community named for one of the wealthiest American industrialists of the 20th century, a native New Englander whose contribution to Virginia was celebrated as an engineering feat, but who barely was able to appreciate it before his untimely death. This community is Huddleston. And the man for whom the community is named is Henry Huttleston Rogers, who built the Virginian Railway to connect the West Virginia coalfields to ports in Norfolk, using his own funds to compete with the Chesapeake & Ohio and the Norfolk & Western railway giants of his day.
What’s in a Name? rogers was a descendant of the original Mayflower pilgrims, born in 1840 in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, and raised in nearby Fairhaven. Lured to newly discovered oilfields in Pennsylvania in the 1860s, he worked his way into the refinery business, first in Pennsylvania, then with petroleum pioneer Charles Pratt in Brooklyn, New York. The Rockerfellers’ Standard Oil Company bought out the Pratt business and brought on Rogers, who had become recognized as an expert oil engineer and businessman. Standard Oil made him a chairman of the manufacturing committee of the corporation, and by 1890 he was its vice president. He expanded his interests from oil to include gas, copper, steel, banking and railroad industries, amassing a great personal fortune and a reputation as a ruthless business competitor. In 1902, Rogers devised a plan to transport coal from the coalfields in Deepwater, West Virginia, to Atlantic ports in Norfolk. With the established C&O and N&W railroads hostile to his efforts, he used more than $35 million of his own funds to establish the Virginian Railway, which eventually ran 600 miles from West Virginia to Sewell’s Point in Norfolk. Lauded as a feat of planning and engineering, the line soon offered a course from the mountains to the sea against which the other railways could not compete. Sadly, Rogers was never able to fully relish the results of his efforts. He took

part in a test tour of the route from Norfolk to Deepwater in April 1909 — accompanied by his friend Samuel Clemens. He then suffered a fatal stroke the following month, weeks before service officially started. After his death, it was revealed that Rogers had not only helped to fund the college education of Helen Keller, but also famed educator Booker T. Washington revealed that he had financially supported more than 50 small schools for African American students in Virginia and elsewhere in the South, as well as generously gave to the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama

and the Hampton Institute in Virginia. He is known for supporting the town hall, a library and a church and a school in his hometown of Fairhaven. And he lends his name (albeit under an alternative spelling) to the community of Huddleston.
Huddleston’s Early History the community known as updike became Huddleston in 1910, in honor of the man responsible for “the richest little railroad in the world.” But its history long preceded the new name. Records of the first settlers along Goose Creek include the Headen family and date back to 1787. A deed from Feb. 26, 1787, records the sale of 1,000 acres by Robert Mead to William Headen for 50 pounds. A later deed dated July 7, 1795, records the sale of 409 acres to John Headen for 100 pounds, mentions land at Goose Creek and Rock Castle Creek, and interest in a mill on Rock Castle Creek. Goose Creek was an attractive location for farming because of its fertile bottomlands. The creek was prone to flooding, as well, a feature that impacted the community for most of its history. The earliest records of the village date

to the mid-1800s, listing the village location as Claytor’s Ford crossing Goose Creek. Its first post office, established in 1909, was named Updike, with Daniel Eldridge David Updike as postmaster; its name changed to Huddleston a year later. Like many communities in the region, the village grew to support the farmers surrounding it. Based on recollections of residents that are maintained by the Bedford

Museum and Genealogical Library, by the opening of the 20th century the town included several businesses, including general merchandise stores, a tomato cannery, garages, saw mills and a bank. The Bank of Huddleston opened for business in 1915 and closed in 1925. It served several years as a barbershop under the ownership of Hampton Dowdy. The barbershop and a building that housed a former general store remain visible next to the train tracks that run under Virginia 626 (Smith Mountain Lake Parkway). Little remains to describe the history of the Huddleston community, though the Bedford Museum maintains several folders of collected news articles and recollections of longtime citizens. One useful communication was a 1991 letter to Mr. D. Webster, a student in Cheshire, England, seeking information about Huddleston for a college project. Kenneth Crouch, a member of the museum’s board of directors, responded to Webster with a detailed history of the town, noting that as of 1991, “In the other areas of the Huddleston community are convenience stores, general stores, marinas, restaurants, boating facilities. At one time there were several stores, tomato canning factories, a bank, garage in the village, but none now there.” The larger Huddleston community had embraced its newer neighbors at Smith Mountain Lake.
A Town Divided and Reunited one relatively contemporary Huddleston news highlight bears squarely on the flooding propensities of Goose Creek. The first bridge over Goose Creek was built shortly after the Headen family acquired the property in the 1700s, and local lore tells of a covered wooden bridge that washed away in the late 1920s. But it was the Labor Day flood in 1987 that brought about the town’s most recently celebrated change.

The 1987 flood washed away a bridge serving Huddleston and one farther upstream, leaving the town without a crossing for two months before a temporary bridge could be installed. “A five-mile [school] bus route turned into 40,” related Richard Ashwell, the principal of Staunton River High School in a news story about the inconvenience. “People who worked in Lynchburg needed two hours to get there, because they had to go around by way of Moneta.” The new bridge, 405 feet long and spanning over the Norfolk Southern tracks that

The town held an official dedication, where a ribbon across the span was cut by Juanita Weymouth, the last person who had crossed the covered bridge lost in 1928, and Ashwell, the last person who had crossed the bridge washed away in 1987. Local dignitaries made speeches, the Huddleston Post Office offered a unique envelope cancellation to mark the event, and the town welcomed a special guest: Wyoming State Sen. For someone who has lost a leg, walking unaided again is a life-changing acquisition.
And while those in America and other developed societies usually have access to state-of-the-art artificial limbs, that’s not the case in poorer countries such as Honduras, Guatemala, Haiti and Vietnam. There, amputees typically face severely limited futures, unable to return to work, attend school or play sports with their friends. Because prosthetics are expensive — ranging in price from $5,000 to $50,000 — they are not available to those living in poor, developing nations. According to the World Health Organization, there are more than 30 million amputees who need prosthetics but cannot afford them. “In Central America, where medical care is marginal, amputations resulting from diabetes, infections and trauma are common,” said lake resident Susan Beatty, a retired pulmonologist/critical care specialist. “In Haiti,

there are approximately 5,000 amputees from the 2010 earthquake alone. And in Vietnam, innocent children are still being maimed by land mines left behind after the war.” Beatty and her husband, Dick, are board members of Hope to Walk, an organization dedicated to providing free prosthetic limbs to amputees who otherwise would have no chance for an ambulatory future. Susan Beatty volunteers her years of experience in medical research to its cause. She is engaged in ongoing studies, including the acceptability and durability of a simple, easily manufactured and fitted prosthesis compared to high-tech models that cost 100 times more. Beatty plans to publish these studies in medical peer reviewed journals and present them at international medical conferences. Dick Beatty volunteers his time and background in finance to equipping HTW with business management policies and proper accounting procedures that will ensure the nonprofit’s financial integrity. “Hope to Walk assumes the trusteeship of our donors’ funds, and we take very seriously our commitment to stewardship,” he said. The vision for HTW began a decade ago when Phil Johnson, a Blacksburg prosthetist, had been commissioned to build a conventional prosthetic leg for a child in Guatemala. When he arrived at the Guatemalan clinic, word had spread of his purpose, and the following day, he was met by 30 amputee children hoping to receive new legs. Vowing to make a difference for those kids, Johnson began developing low-cost, low-tech prostheses that could be produced and worn in developing countries. Serendipity struck a few years later when Johnson met Michael Mabry, then a student at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, who came to Johnson for orthotics for his shoes. When Johnson shared his vision about making low-cost prosthetics, Mabry’s reply was, “Let’s do it!” Johnson engineered a functional prosthetic leg made from inexpensive everyday materials. Instead of titanium and carbon-graphite, he used common PVC plumbing pipe, a wooden dowel, Gorilla Glue and crepe, a flexible material used in soles of walking boots. The cost of the materials came to just $65. From there Johnson and Mabry co-founded Hope to Walk with the purpose of providing free prosthetics to those needing them in developing countries, as well as establishing “Hope Centers” in countries where local woodworkers can be trained to manufacture these prostheses inexpensively. Once a Hope Center is operating independently, HTW will move on to another location with a high concentration of indigent amputees. “There are millions in need of a miracle,” said Mabry,

who currently serves as HTW’s chairman. “Hope to Walk intends to be that miracle.” It was while Mabry was a third-year medical student doing clinical rotations that he met Ken Jones, a Christiansburg family physician who has since retired to Huddleston with his wife, Karen. “I was intrigued by the charisma and selfless energy of this young man,” Jones recalled of Mabry. “It seemed inconceivable that he was able to perform the endless duties as chairman of this humanitarian organization while engulfed in the rigors of medical school.” After seeing his own wife take mission trips, including one to Haiti where she helped build a church, Jones joined HTW on a trip to Honduras. From there, he was hooked. “It blew me away to watch amputees who had not walked in years come into the Honduras Hope Center by wheelchair, register, be measured and fitted with a new leg and, four hours later, walk out to a life of hope,” Jones said. “Where else can an investment of $100 put a disabled person back on his feet, back to work and able to support his family again?” Lake residents and woodworkers Paul Hadfield, a retired shop teacher, and Bill Johnston, who makes dulcimers, heard Jones speak at Eastlake Community Church about HTW. Learning that Johnson continued seeing patients in his Blacksburg clinic while making prosthetic legs after hours, they offered to help. Now the two retirees manufacture feet and other components of the prosthetics in their home workshops. “It’s a simple task for anyone with woodworking skills and equipment,” Hadfield said, “and we need more volunteers to expand our efforts.” Johnson currently is working with Virginia Tech engineering professors and a doctoral candidate to develop a low-cost artificial knee joint. Once perfected, the knee joint will allow HTW to begin building prosthetics for patients who are living with above-the-knee amputations. During the past three years, volunteer teams have made 30 trips to Honduras, Guatemala, Haiti and Vietnam. So far, more than 350 amputees have received free prosthetic legs. The operating budget is entirely dependent on donations from individuals and, more recently, from foundations, service organizations and corporate donors. “When people grasp the tremendous disconnect that exists in developing countries between prosthetic need and prosthetic access, and then realize what Hope to Walk is doing, it all comes together,” Jones said. Rotary International recently awarded a grant to HTW for development of a training and certification program in Honduras to empower its citizens to locally manufacture and provide prosthetics.

“It blew me away to watch amputees who had not walked in years come into the Honduras Hope Center by wheelchair, register, be measured and fitted with a new leg and, four hours later, walk out to a life of hope.” The Rotary Club of Smith Mountain Lake also awarded a grant to purchase supplies to make the prosthetics. Hackett Enterprises in Central Virginia donates white oak from its sawmill for the prosthetic heel while Lowe’s of Bedford has donated PVC pipe for the leg shaft or “talon.” To put it all together, “Gorilla Glue Corporation is providing all the adhesive we need,” Mabry said. “Through the kindness of donors, the time freely given by volunteers, and some simple innovative technology, HTW can change many lives, free of charge to the recipients,” Susan Beatty said. “There’s no denying that we have to make this happen.”

SHORELINES On The Water
In 1992, Jim Mills, owner of Webster Marine, took a gamble after friends had encouraged him to bring relatively new motorized water scooters — called personal watercraft or PWCs — to Smith Mountain Lake. Mills began working with Bombardier, which made the Sea Doo brand of PWCs, to qualify as a distribution outlet. He was approved for the dealership and, with some trepidation, agreed to an initial order of 30. As it turns out, Webster sold the order, as well as a second shipment of 30 more machines, that first season. The two-seater vessels (the three-seater Sea Doos came along two seasons later) sold for $5,000 to $6,000. Since then, Webster has sold around 100 units annually, making the Moneta business one of the largest Sea Doo dealers in a three-state district. Over the years, PWCs have become more powerful, luxurious and pricier. High-end models with 300-horsepower engines, slow-speed and reverse maneuvering
assist systems, computer-controlled “panic stop” braking and a shock-absorber-mounted rider deck can cost more than $16,000. But compared to boats, PWCs are easy to handle, don’t take up much dock space, are relatively cheap (an entry level SeaDoo retails for around $7,000) and nearly fuss-free.
Care and maintenance To stay ready at the press of their starter buttons, PWCs need regular care. “We can always fix one that doesn’t work right,” said Dale Runyon of Bayside Marina. “Smart owners, though, avoid problems with a bit of TLC.” That includes burning non-ethanol gas to prevent fuel systems from clogging and deteriorating and changing the oil every 100 hours or once a season, Runyon said. A PWC that misses, hesitates upon acceleration or won’t develop full RPM is often asking for new sparkplugs, a fairly easy, do-it-yourself project for anyone mechanically inclined. “But be sure to buy the right replacement plugs and check the old ones to see if the brass electrode on the top of each has been removed,” said mechanic John Stabil of Reliable Marine Service. “If so, screw off the caps that come on the replacement plugs before installing them or you won’t be able to

reconnect the sparkplug wires.” Stabil also offered several tips for avoiding costly professional service. “Lubricate properly (that’s full and clean crankcase oil for four-cycles, proper fuel-oil mix for two-cycles) and keep water out of the engine compartment. Many machines, especially the two-strokes, must be rolled upright from a turnover in just one direction — shown clearly on a sticker at the rear. Ignore that, and you risk flooding the cylinders with lake water.” Chief among the reasons for professional servicing is to replace a worn wear ring, which usually results from sand, gravel or floating debris being sucked through the jet impeller. “Sluggish performance despite the engine seeming to run fine is the tip-off,” said Virgil Naff of Virgil Naff, a powersports dealer based in Lynchburg and at Smith Mountain Lake. “It’s about a $200 repair, but will make your machine jack-rabbit quick again.”
Pre-flight check Members of the She Doos personal watercraft group pay close attention to ensure their vessels are in good working order. “I give mine a thorough once-over at the beginning of each season, making sure all the essential equipment — fire extinguisher, whistle, first aid kit, mooring line, registration, boater education card — is back where it belongs,” longtime member LeeAnn DeMonbreum said. “I remove the seats to air out the engine compartment, then charge the battery and check the oil. When I do start it, I let it run some at the dock, then shut it down and make sure it will restart. Finally, I take a test ride, staying close to home until I’m sure all is well.” PWC owners should pay attention to how their ves-
54
sel’s starter motor cranks, said Deedee Bondurant, founding member of the SheDoos. “Hesistant or slow cranking usually means the battery is weak and will soon leave you stranded.” Owners who get two full seasons from a battery are doing well, and even that usually requires removing and trickle-charging it during the winter months. PWC batteries can be located in hard-to-reach spaces so removing them and getting a new one secured and connected takes some doing.
Staying showroom ready Just as with boats, covering your PWC and keeping it out of the sun will help preserve its good looks. Fiberglass that has turned chalky from the sun’s rays can be restored to near-showroom glimmer with application of polishing compound, then wax, using an industrial-strength buffer. The job is a whole lot easier with the PWC sitting on a trailer. Tim Wall of TNT Auto Body and Repair Service Centers in Glade Hill said a reconditioning job typically costs between $400 and $600. That price, he added, includes a PWC’s pick-up and return. “Keeping your PWC freshly coated in quality UVresistant marine wax will keep it looking good a whole lot longer,” Wall added. A sun-exposed PWC can cause a vessel’s saddle to become brittle and crack, especially on darker-colored vinyls. Got It Covered Upholstery, one of several upholsterers at the lake, will re-upholster a two-person saddle for around $200, ranging up to $475 or more for complex patterns or the large, multi-tiered saddles on newer models.

Take A Boating Safety Class ď‚Ł All personal watercraft and boat operators must complete a NASBLA-certified boater education course. Virginia law requires that any person, regardless of age must comply. Educated and aware boaters are safer boaters. There are two courses offered this month:
U.S. Power Squadron's America's Boating Course What it teaches: Information on basic boating, safety, rules of the road and safety requirements. Cost: $38 and includes a 270-page manual. When: June 15, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Where: SML Water Treatment Facility, 1500 Radford Church Road, Moneta. To register: Visit register-ed. com/events/view/138719. Know the Rules of the Road Boats being overtaken and boats ahead crossing from the starboard quarter (right front) have the right of way. When it’s dark, foggy or raining, you should reduce your speed and use running lights. Keep to the right in channels, leave plenty of space when overtaking and don’t fall in line with boats that are towing skiers or tubers.
60
SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER JUNE 2019
Maintain a Proper Lookout This tip is so important that it’s stated in both the International and Inland Rules of Navigation. Just as in driving, operator distraction is a major contributor to boating incidents. If your boat has an attentive lookout, you have a chance of avoiding a collision with a boat that doesn’t. Every operator is obligated to take action to avoid a collision with another boat. Scan the waterway, anticipate potential dangers, clearly indicate your intended course and stay clear of other vessels, obstacles, navigation aids, docks and swimmers. Skippers of bow-riders should make sure passengers riding forward don’t block their view ahead.
Be Alert for Floating Debris in the Lake Boaters who encounter debris that could be a hazard to other boaters should tow the debris to undeveloped shoreline, secure it if possible and report the location to Appalachian Power Company at www.smithmtn. com or 1-800-956-4237. Appalachian routinely removes debris from Smith Mountain and Leesville lakes from April through October and as needed at other times during the year. Debris in the lake is most likely to occur after heavy rains.
Understand and Maintain Your Boat & Equipment Arrange for a vessel safety check of equipment and systems every year by a member of the U.S. Power Squadron or U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Your inspector will review key safe boating reminders with the skipper and crew. Vessel safety checks will be June 2 at Lumpkin’s Marina, June 16 at Bayside Marina, June 23 at Crystal Shores Marina and July 28 at Bayside Marina. You also can visit cgaux.org to arrange a boat or personal watercraft inspection nearby or at your own dock. It’s free and it can provide you with peace of mind.
SHORELINES On The Water
Follow The Rules Never allow passengers to ride on the gunwales, seat backs or outside of protective railings, including the front of a pontoon boat. A sudden turn, stop or start could cause a fall overboard. After leaving a boat launch or marina, maintain a slow, no-wake speed for a safe and legal distance. Learn and follow the navigation rules.
Create and Maintain Trim On watercraft, such as paddleboards, canoes and kayaks, it’s important to distribute weight evenly for level floating, both fore and aft and port to starboard. This requires proper placement of people and items aboard for optimum balance. Power boats also should be trimmed, which involves seating passengers evenly side-to-side and more forward than aft, which minimizes loss of visibility as a boat comes on plane. Strategic observer placement and use of motor trim and/ or trim tabs also helps keep the bow down when pulling skiers out of the water. Boaters should keep their craft level … and remain levelheaded, too.
Never Swim Alone Whether from shore, off the dock or off the boat, use the buddy system to ensure someone is paying attention to every swimmer. And designate a responsible adult to watch youth swimmers at all times. Don’t just presume someone will take on that role.
Wear Life Jackets Correctly ... The U.S. Coast Guard designates use of life jackets based on weight and chest size and sometimes age. Equipment should be sized and worn correctly with all straps connected. Children should have the lower crotch strap between their legs connected on their life jacket. It is important to realize that without this strap children could slide out of their jacket. Falling from a dock or boat significantly increases the pressure and chances of the life jacket separating from a child.
... Even When Working on Docks During the boating season, many people find themselves around a dock. Consider wearing a life jacket when loading, unloading or working on or around a boat. A fall from more than 6 feet can be life-threatening. A fall that includes a head injury and submersion in water can be catastrophic, according to the American Red Cross. Make sure children wear life jackets on docks, in boats and around the water.
Be Properly Equipped
Whether heading out on the water for a day or for an hour, take along a fully charged phone, a phone charger, a lake map, sunscreen and sufficient hydration for everyone aboard.

Reel ’Em In: Striper Fishing Striper fishing remains a popular pastime at Smith Mountain Lake for all ages. Anglers use a variety of methods, such as drifting live bait, trolling plugs and bucktail jigs or casting top water lures. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries limits lake catches to 2 per day in the aggregate. There is no length limit from June 1 to Oct. 31, though no striper between 30 and 40 inches may be caught from Nov. 1 to May 31. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Novel a Pure Pleasuria John J. Jessop has written a murder mystery that is meant to be lighthearted and fun
Pleasuria: Take as Directed By John J. Jessop Koehler Books. 203 pages. Paperback. $16.95
78
“I
wanted to write a book that was just fun.” That’s how John J. Jessop sums up his newest novel, “Pleasuria: Take as Directed.” While it’s a murder mystery, the book is meant to be funny. “It’s a look at the humorous side of what can go wrong with medical biotechnology research,” Jessop said. As an expert in the pharmacology and toxicology of drugs, biopharmaceuticals and toxins, Jessop worked for 20 years for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Before that, he logged 20 years on the industry side, working as a consultant for pharmaceutical companies. “I always wanted to write, so I started writing just for fun,” said Jessop, who is a fan of murder mysteries. In 2016, Jessop self-published “Guardian Angel: Unforgiven” and a year later, he published “Guardian Angel: Indoctrination.” The first involved a serial killer and the latter featured a cult leader who kidnapped and tortured young women. “I spent two years with some really evil characters, and it got really depressing,” Jessop recalled. To lighten his writing mood, Jessop developed the plot line for “Pleasuria.” The novel’s main character, Dr. Jason Longfellow, is a bored FDA drug reviewer who is in the throes of a mid-life crisis. Complete with a shiny new convertible, Longfellow gets his private investigator’s license much to the chagrin of his wife. As he is carpooling with a group to work one

morning, Longfellow lands his first case — a female passenger suddenly has mysterious, non-stop orgasms and requires medical treatment. As Longfellow starts to investigate, he follows a chain of evidence that leads to a clinical trial at CureStuff Pharmaceuticals and to a string of beautiful female suspects. “He gets into funny situations that he has to explain to his wife over and over,” Jessop said. But Jessop, who’s been retired since 2015 and lives at the lake with his wife, Nancy, insists that “Pleasuria” is a work of fiction and not based on his life or his career. “Anything your imagination can come up with, you can put it in a murder mystery,” he said. After he finished writing the book, Jessop sent it to more than two dozen agents and three publishers before signing with Koehler Books. “They liked it because they said it was a laugh-outloud comedy,” Jessop said. “It’s funny without being offensive or disturbing.” By all accounts, Longfellow’s adventures in “Pleasuria” are receiving good reviews. In March, reviewer Ann Sprouse gave the book four out of five stars on Amazon. “[It] certainly keeps your interest in wanting to see how this one ends,” she wrote. “For a relatively new author, great beginning!” Now Jessop is working on his third draft of the sequel due out later this year. For Jessop, writing “Pleasuria” was a hobby that he hopes others will find entertaining. “I wanted to just write a book that’ll make you laugh,” he said. “It’s a wonderful beach read or a lake read.” And any after-tax profits that Jessop makes from it will be donated to Holly’s House in Evansville, Indiana, and Darkness-to-Light in Charleston, South Carolina, two charities that help abused children, in memory of Jessop’s sister Jacqueline, who died at age 45. A World War II recedes further into the past, a needed reminder
Tin Can Titans: The Heroic Men and Ships of World War II’s Most Decorated Navy Destroyer Squadron By John Wukovits Da Capo Press. 352 pages. $28
The dim gray years are slowly closing the book on the Second World War. Of the more than 16 million men and women who answered the call to arms in December 1941, the numbers shrink by half a thousand souls a day. Thus it is that authors such as John Wukovits do all of us a great service by researching the lives of ships and sailors, and putting these stirring tales before a public often far too ignorant of their heritage. In Navy parlance, a Destroyer Squadron (DesRon) is a group of tough, swift greyhounds of the sea, usually four to six in number, but as many as 10. Thin-skinned and relatively fragile, they nevertheless packed a mighty punch in combat, armed as they were in World War II with 5-inch rapid-fire cannon, 10 deadly torpedoes, a rackful of antisubmarine depth charges and multiple 40mm and 20mm antiaircraft guns. They were manned by some 350 officers and seamen and sent on missions of the greatest peril, scouting ahead of more powerful task forces, taking on attacks by enemy aircraft and submarines — even at times dodging shore batteries while lambasting enemy fortifications. This is the tale of DesRon 21, beginning with the arrival in the South Pacific of the first three destroyers, O’Bannon, Fletcher and Nicholas, in September 1942, a time when the Japanese were striving to retake the vital island of Guadalcanal, seized in early August by the 1st Marine Division. Night after night, ships and aircraft of the opposing fleets slugged it out on the black waters of “Ironbottom Sound,” a narrow
strait lined with the wrecks of sunken warships. And though reeling from earlier defeats, the Americans’ fighting spirit turned the tide, with DesRon 21 in the thick of it, from the Solomons to New Guinea and from the Philippines to the shores of Okinawa and Tokyo Bay. For their reward, earned by an outstanding combat record and more battle stars than any destroyer squadron in the Pacific Fleet, Admiral Halsey accorded O’Bannon, Nicholas and Taylor the signal honor of leading his great battle wagons on their victory parade into Tokyo Bay. The author gives full attention to the individual stories of the captains, the officers and crewmen who made it possible. There are tales of heroic actions, grievous losses, dull routine and terrifying battle scenes, and no story would be complete without a view of the steadfast wives and families who held the home front, awaiting their sailors’ return. But the danger and hardship drew the ship’s complement into a cohesive whole. As one diarist ably put it, “A spirit of comradeship flourished which has no parallel in civilian life. The constant proximity of sudden and violent death, the danger and excitement and sometimes terror of our precarious existence gave an added stimulus to the strengthening of brotherhood among us.” A well-researched, well-written and well-edited book, sure to stir the imaginations of many veterans, and well worth the time of adventure-loving civilians. SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER JUNE 2019
Dock Tale Hour
By Kimberly Dalferes
N
o one’s really asking, but I feel compelled to clarify that it’s a bit of a challenge to reside in two universes. I’m not yet a SML fulltimer, and so I traverse two worlds — the small town and the big city. I do so by necessity and choice, but I do plan to one day be more Penhook, less Fairfax. Why? Because the sweet life of the small town is something I find my soul covets. I didn’t always yearn for the slower pace of a lesser densely populated geography. There was a time when the call of the hustle and bustle pulled me north. However, as I become older (and wiser is subject to debate), I find that the pace of the small town is much more attuned to my current proclivities. Straddling the rhythms of DC versus SML frequently requires me to downshift when I’m in full-throttle mode. I’ve caught myself impatiently tapping the toe of my sandal as I wait for my latte at CJs. It’s a bad habit to always be in such a daggum hurry. Yes, the coffee shop near my DC office can serve through a customer line faster than a speeding ticket. But they rarely comment that they like my new green shirt or that it looks like we’ll be having beautiful weather today. Something I love about small town living is that you can’t be anonymous. If someone cuts you off in traffic in Northern Virginia — which is guaranteed to happen daily — it’s way too easy to flip them off and never see them again. Conversely, flip someone off while cruising down Route 40, and you’re likely to have just given your dentist the finger. Driving in general is a much more enjoyable experience here at SML compared to the DC metro area. A good friend of mine at work, who drives into the city each day, proclaims at least once a month, “That’s it! I can’t take it anymore. The commute is killing me — I quit!” This happens with such regularity that we’ve started an office pool with wagers against when he’ll “quit” next. I’ve got June 28th. Benefits of small town living some-
In Praise of Small Towns “Small towns make up for their lack of people by having everyone be more interesting.” — Doris “Granny D” Haddock times sneak up on me. The fresh earthy smell after a good rain storm always makes me breathe in deeply. The short lines at the DMV recently had me smiling; at the DMV! And, the stars. A clear, cloudless night at SML can keep me transfixed for hours on my back deck; in Fairfax you forget the beauty of a star-filled sky. Here in our little cluster of small towns, many of us benefit from living close to the lake. Did you know there’s a phenomenon called “the blue mind effect?” It’s professed that being in close proximity
to water has a calming effect on humans and can improve our mental, emotional and physical well-being. I do know that a sunny day spent on the dock sure can right set my disposition. A toast to all our SML small towns: make sure you wave as someone drives by; you’re likely to know ‘em. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties. Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
