Editor’s Note
A
ll spring we’ve been navigating the uncharted
waters of the COVID-19 pandemic and working toward some semblance of normalcy. No doubt we’re all learning how to do this together. Our goal at Laker is to help you escape from the day-to-day monotony of the daily news. If you’re looking for a fun, outdoor project this summer, our gardening columnist shares tips on growing your own meadow. And get this: you don’t need a huge swath of land, either. You can grow a meadow in as little as a 10-foot by 10-foot space! Home renovations not only will increase your home’s value, but also improve your quality of life. In this issue, we’ll meet three couples who tackled various projects in their homes and see how they’re enjoying the outcomes. Plus, we’ll take you to some local eateries where you can dine with your pup, as well as provide you with our annual dockside dining guide. And be sure to check out this latest installment of Dock Tale Hour by our longtime columnist Kimberly Dalferes. Whether you’re visiting or you live here permanently, please remember that we are all in this together. Thank you for reading the Laker, and we also hope that you’ll patronize the advertisers who are featured in our magazine as well!

comforting sound, akin to the feel of warm, silky chocolate enveloping the tongue. Add to its charm, the concept of a meadow evokes visions of clearings in the woods such as the spot where Bambi was first introduced to flowers and butterflies. There is a growing trend to introduce meadows to home gardens, and the practice is well worth trying at the lake for both the relaxed beauty of a meadow and the environmental benefits. Meadows attract pollinators and birds, the roots stabilize the soil, and along the shore a meadow can serve as a pretty riparian buffer that soaks up pollutants such as excess nitrogen from fertilizers that shouldn’t be flowing into the lake. Once established, a meadow is relatively low maintenance, needing to be mowed only once or twice a year. According to Mike Lizotte, author of the book “Mini Meadows: Grow a Little Patch of Colorful Flowers Anywhere Around Your Yard,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that in the U.S., more gas is used in lawnmowers yearly than was lost in the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. Another surprising statistic: one hour of mowing produces the same amount of pollution as 11 cars driven for the same amount of time. You can do your part to save the he word meadow has a soft,
planet by planting a meadow. Meadows are a versatile concept. You can plant one designed to flourish in part shade, or boggy conditions, in dry areas or with a selection of plants that tolerate — and even help improve — heavy clay soil. A meadow can encompass a large span of land or a tiny 10-foot by 10-foot plot just for the fun of it.
Getting Started of a meadow, getting one requires careful planning. One of the most important steps is preparing the site. Weeds are enemy number one of a meadow. Before you plant, it’s important that you completely clear the area of unwanted grasses and weeds. The better job you do, the better your outcome will be. Although it’s tempting to spray an herbicide to kill off the unwanted vegetation efficiently, the toxins will leach into the lake (and possibly your well water), and you are poisoning the garden. Instead, wet the ground and spread a thick layer of newspaper (at least eight to 10 sheets thick). Wet the sheets again and cover them with mulch to make the area less unsightly. Do this task now. The newspaper will rot away, and your plot will be ready to plant next spring.

Most meadow plants thrive in poor soil, so you won’t be adding topsoil, compost or fertilizer.
Choosing Your Plants Your meadow should be a combination of native grasses, sedges and tough plants (see a list on page 24 of some of the perennial plant possibilities). The grasses are the backbone to the meadow, adding structure to the planting, as well as providing support for the tall-growing forbs. According to Devin Floyd, executive director of the Center for Urban Habitats (CUH) and a native plant specialist, a Virginia prairie would be dominated by little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) and broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus). Other grasses that do nicely in a local meadow are the beautiful pink muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris), fountain grass (Pennisetum) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum). For native perennials, consider including hoary mountainmint (Pycnanthemum incanum), small’s ragwort (Packera anonyma), common dewberry (Rubus flagellaris), upland ironweed (Vernonia glauca) and toothed whitetopped aster (Sericocarpus asteroides). You can use a mixture of started plants and seeds. If you want control over the patterns of color and bloom season, start with about 60% plants and 40% seed. In your seed mix, consider adding seeds of annual oat or winter wheat grass. They will keep seedlings from being choked by aggressive
weeds. Do bear in mind that if you’re putting in small, young perennial plants or bare roots, you need to be sure the soil where you’re planting isn’t just rocky ridge type soil as is prevalent in much of the lake. Loosen the soil immediately around a planting hole and mix in some topsoil with the native soil. Also make sure to water when it’s dry so the roots can become established.
Looking After Your Meadow is low maintenance once it has matured, it does take some care the first year or two. Larry Weaner, one of the pioneers of meadow design in the U.S., who is based in Pennsylvania, mows the ground three times during the first summer to keep the weeds at bay and to stabilize growth. The meadow won’t look pretty during this early stage; the frequent mowing cuts away all the flowers; the swath of ground you’re picturing as a verdant floral scene is merely a shallow layer of shorn foliage. But take heart, after the first year, you should mow just once a year at the end of winter and by year two, fast-growing perennials such as black-eyed Susans and coreopsis will put on their first flowering show. By year three, the slowergrowing perennials will begin their display, and each year after that the meadow will get better and better, with color patterns and flower textures weaving themselves through the space and throughout the changing seasons.

Bachelor’s buttons (Centaurea cyanus) dominate this pretty meadow planting. A greater variety of flowers and grasses would extend the seasonal interest.

Gardening Prairie coneflower (Ratibida pinnata) • From June through August, this drama queen produces large show-off lemon-yellow flowers with droopy petals on 3-foot to 5-foot tall plants. It will laugh at drought and poor soil, and is a magnet to butterflies and other pollinators. Mexican hat flower (Ratibida columnifera) • Another prairie-hardy plant, the Mexican hat plant grows up to 2 feet tall and blooms with striking rusty red flowers with droopy petals edged with yellow. The central, ovate disk is sombrero tall.
Tiger Lily (Lilium lancifolium, aka Lilium tigrinum)
• Although native to China, Japan, Korea and the Russian Far East, these plants have naturalized throughout the eastern U.S. A few clumps of orange tigers will make a fantastic accent in a wild meadow. In midsummer, the lilies will rise above most of the other meadow flowers, opening their big, brilliant orange flowers that last for weeks. They will return every year. T I P S & T R IC K S
Fantastic Plants to Fill In Your Sunny Meadow You can try almost any perennial in your meadow, but this list focuses on ones that will provide major color and will grow strong year after year. You’ll get best results with either original species or hybrids that have not been overbred. The result will be a natural looking wildflower meadow garden.
Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) • This Virginia native creates a beautiful clump of electric orange flowers in midsummer. People like it as much as the butterflies do. A local native, you’ll often see it growing along roadsides, showing off it’s orange plumage in June. They do best in sandy, quickdraining soil (a slope helps) in full sun. Opt for established plants are they’re difficult to establish from seed. Blanket Flower (Gaillardia sp.) • Gaillardia is easy to grow from seed, but if you want instant pleasure, buy a few plants. Choose the tallest varieties for your meadow. Anything too short may be lost among taller-growing grasses and flowers.
Queen of the Prairie (Filipendula rubra venusta)
• One of the most under appreciated native wildflowers, it makes a fantastic show every summer with tall stems topped with pink plumes. It is tough and dependable.
Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta and R. fulgida) • Rudbeckia hirta is a biennial, but while the original plant will die, it self-sows, reproducing itself with abandon. The perennial species is R. fulgida; the favorite hybrid is ‘Goldsturm’, German for gold storm – and yes, it will give you a blizzard of golden flowers. ‘Goldsturm’ stems are taller than the species, a good thing for your meadow. Start now with a plant or two, and let it self-sow for next year. 24
S M I T H M O U N T A I N L A K E R | July/August 2020
Orange Daylily (Hemerocallis fulva) • This wild orange daylily will grow in sun or shade, wet spots or dry, and their aggressive spreading habit isn’t a problem in a meadow. When you want more, divide the ever-growing clump. Another plant from the Far East, it has adapted happily to North American climes and has naturalized along roadsides and in fields. You’ll see them blooming along the Smith Mountain Lake byways. All the plant parts are edible: boil the tubers like potatoes, enliven your salads with the orange petals, or stir-fry a few buds with butter, garlic and sesame seeds. The buds are said to taste like a cross between asparagus and green peas.
Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum × superbum) • Although a European wildflower, it establishes well in local meadows and provides lovely splashes of white floral display every summer. Purple stemmed and New York asters (Aster
puniceus, A. novi-belgii) • Almost indistinguishable from each other except for the hairy, red stems on A. puniceus as opposed to the smooth green New York aster stems, both are robust, upright perennials that need regular water to thrive. In fall, both asters will enliven a meadow with their lavender and purple daisy like flowers.
Goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis) •
No one knows for sure how many goldenrod species there are, but experts estimate there are between 100 and 120. S. nemoralis is typical for Virginia meadows, but others will do nicely, too. In the fall, their tall golden flower plumes are an excellent complement to the lavender and purple asters.
Sunflowers (Helianthus) • Whether you opt for the annual showstopper, Jerusalem artichokes, tall sunflower (H. giganteus) or other species, you’ll be glad for the dramatic yellow flowers in late summer. Above: The orange daylily will grow in sun or shade. Right: A medley of flowers grow among the grasses, drawing the eye through the composition with color and texture interest in this low-maintenance meadow.

ost remodeling projects, especially ones that go beyond surface treatments, involve planning, disruption to the property and substantial expense. The trick is to try to make lasting improvements that outweigh the temporary hassle. Here are three examples that achieve that end.
Garage and Kitchen Conversion S TA R N E S H O M E , u n i on ha l l “our kitchen was quite cramped ,
and we had a crowded one-car garage,” said Wanda Starnes about the home in Union Hall she shares with her husband, Gary. “And the laundry area was shoehorned into that garage — small with no work space.” So as the couple approached retirement and planned to become full-time lake residents, they decided some renovations were in order. They started by building a detached two-car garage with space for a shop. “Finally room for both cars, gardening gear and a workbench,” Gary said of the new space. “Since Wanda likes to cook and entertain, we blew the kitchen out into the former garage and added a generous laundry and homemaker office at the far end.” While the footprint of the home stayed the same, the dayto-day living space increased by nearly 324 square feet. The old garage door became a wall, with stone to match the rest of the house, and looks like part of the original design. The kitchen expansion let them brighten that space with two enlarged windows relocated to accommodate the new cabinet layout, new antique white cabinetry, an update of the 13-year-old appliances and lighter-colored granite countertops. A free-standing island with an induction cooktop, in contrasting coffee bean-stained cherry, serves as a prep area. There’s also a wide serving bar that doubles as bar-

stool seating for up to six for quick, casual meals. A hutch in matching dark cabinetry displays Wanda’s assortment of Jugtown pottery. A stone path leading to the front door replaced planking that was causing some drainage problems. The result was a dryer lower level that has since been freshened and decorated into comfortable guest quarters. Gary, a civil engineer, designed the project while Rick Schlaginhaufen Construction did the building. Gary lived in the home during the project to supervise the work, shop for materials and fixtures and ensure the work met his standards. “It was painstaking at times,” he said, “but being constantly on the scene was a big plus to the end result.”
Outdoor Kitchen and Fire Pit stro E b e l H O M E , M O N E TA The home John and Denise Stroebel
bought in 2009 boasted enviable outdoor-living spaces — a large covered back deck plus a screened porch next to the kitchen. “The house is quite high on a fairly steep lot,” John said. “Those spaces were convenient, but using them kept us and our guests farther from the water than I wanted to be. that makes life here so special.” John envisioned a waterfront patio with a fire pit, a kitchen counter and appliances. But with advice from a professional landscape designer, he inverted the layout so the kitchen was against the bank and the fire pit was in the wall on the lake side of the patio flanked by benches. “That put the patio closer to the water and the fire pit just above the 800-foot line with the lake as a backdrop, which goes to show that getting a pro’s design advice is a good investment,” he said. As the couple envisioned entertaining in the new space, they realized it had to include secure, weather-and verminproof storage to keep all the necessary utensils, dishes, condiments, plus the food and beverages, right there and ready to use. “If you have to schlep all the fixings down the hill and back again for each occasion, it will surely limit the number of occasions,” John said. Appliances from Ferguson’s included a gas grill/rotisserie, a refrigerator and storage lockers set under impervious granite counter tops, plus a clean-up sink with hot water. “It saves having to carry dirty dishes back up to the house,” John added. for the patio space. An opera singer and music lover, John said he insisted on music at his patio and opted for a Sonos system, which WiFi accesses iTunes and feeds the music to all-weather speakers. Outdoor lighting on the patio by Keenan Electric, in addition to lighting in nearby trees by Westlake Irrigation and Lighting, makes being there after dusk a delight. “Gazing up at the magnificent star-filled sky is always a treat for everyone,” John said. From the patio, it’s just a few steps down to the dock, so those two spaces combine into one big waterfront fun area. “We can spend an entire day at the water with minimal trips up and down the hill,” John added. “John’s lake life really centers around the boats,” Denise said, “and this new space draws family and guests down to where everyone can be part of the fun.” For those who might be interested in a similar project, John had some advice: “Envisioning how you’ll use the space, then designing and equipping it accordingly, is key to a project like this, but hardscape and outdoor appliances are pricey, so Outdoor lighting, both on the ground be prepared for sticker shock. Multi-season Deck Porch MARESCA HOME, WIRTZ “This used to be a deck, and a hot one at that,” said Charlene Maresca. “We really didn’t use it; we just looked at it from inside. After living in this house for 16 years, we decided to convert part of it into a multi-season porch.” Charlene and John Maresca had screened porches in their previous homes and loved them. “We finally realized how much we missed that kind of space in this house,” John said. Draftsman Eric Buck designed this one and helped the couple decide which part of their deck to enclose. The space was centered on the back of the house and accessed from the living room. It left a corner deck with a fire pit near the kitchen and a private deck just outside the master suite. “It’s not where we expected the porch to go,” John said. “But Eric knew just how to make it functional and blend with the back of the house.” Clear glass railings had been The Marescas gained more than 300 installed on their deck a few years square feet of living back. With seven large trees recently removed from the hillside below, the room offers a spectacular floor-to-ceiling view down the Blackwater. White vinyl bead-board-look ceiling panels keep the space bright at day’s end. With careful shopping, the Marescas made this significant change to their living space for a little more than $30,000. “We should have done it sooner,” Charlene said.
The Maresca’s remaining deck space includes a private balcony off the master bedroom (above) and a space for outdoor entertaining .

“It rained and it rained and it rained. Piglet told himself that never in all his life, and he was goodness knows how old — three, was it, or four? — never had he seen so much rain. Days and days and days.” Winnie - the - Poo H “In Which Piglet is Entirely Surrounded by Water” by A.A. Milne
Bet ween 12 : 35 a.m. and 5 : 05 p.m. on May 22 this year, Smith Mountain Lake saw a high water level of just a hair off 798 feet, nearly 3 feet above full pond. Appalachian Power’s contract specifies that lake levels cannot rise above 800 feet. They had 2 feet to spare.
Statistics Tell Part of the Story “’The atmospheric conditions have been very unfavourable lately,’ said Owl. “’The what?’ “It has been raining,’ explained Owl. “’Yes,’ said Christopher Robin, ‘It has.’ ‘The flood-level has reached an unprecedented height.’ “‘The who?’ “There’s a lot of water about,’ explained Owl. “‘Yes,’ said Christopher Robin, ‘there is.’” G eorge Porter , s p okesman for A ppalac hian Pow er ,
said that at the peak of the water levels over Memorial Day weekend, the water inflow to the lake from all the rivers and tributaries was 60,000 cubic feet per second. To put that in perspective, in 2018 during Hurricane Michael, it was 50,000 cubic feet per second. In the past 15 years, these are the only two incidents when water entered the lake at such a rapid rate. The average daily inflow to Smith Mountain Lake is 631 million gallons (976 cubic feet per second). The recent storm increased the inflow by 60 times more than normal. Despite the dramatic changes in the landscape, May’s highwater experience is only the fourth highest of six high-water incidents in the lake’s 54-year history (see sidebar). According to George Porter, the highest ever was on April 27, 1978. On that date, the lake rose to 799.79 feet, just inches below Appalachian Power’s mandated maximum level of 800 feet. 56

Meteorologist Chris Michaels had fun with a lake water volume calculation. On May 22 for Channel 10 News, Michaels wrote, “A colleague … wondered if we could fill Smith Mountain Lake with all that rain. It turns out that you can, and you could have some left over water too.” By making a few reasonable assumptions based on data provided by the Bedford Regional Water Authority, Michaels determined that with the volume of rainfall the area received, you could fill an empty Smith Mountain Lake 1.69 times. The lake is said to contain 6 billion gallons of water. That’s a lot of water. The results of all that water made for some unusual sights. Docks were underwater, furniture was floating, kayaks and Photo on previous pages: catriona tudor erler
Charlene Jones took a photo of a kayaker (left) floating above the walkway at the docks behind Bridgewater Condominiums at Hales Ford Bridge. Bill Tice took a photo of a duck sitting in a nest she made in flower pots on his dock before the water became too high. Tice later safely relocated the nest. Dave Elliott stands on his dock in the Mountain View Shores community.
other water toys were adrift, lakeside roads, paths and shrubs were submerged, fish and snakes were seen swimming across what normally is dry land, and the water was nearer to everyone’s home.
Personal Experiences “Every morning he [Christopher Robin] went out with his umbrella and put a stick in the place where the water came up to, and every next morning he went out and couldn’t see his stick anymore, so he put another stick in the place where the water came up to, and then he walked home again, and every morning he had a shorter way to walk than he had Above photo: charlene jones; Top right: bill tice; Bottom right: sally hall

William during his time as principal skipper on the Virginia Dare from 1997 to 2017 and co-chair of the SML Water Safety Council from 1996 to 2004), was a boy when his father bought farm land at the soon-to-be-created Smith Mountain Lake in 1963. He remembers that his father closed on the property on Nov. 22, the day John F. Kennedy was shot. In 1964, when the dam was complete and the lake began

to fill, Tice’s father announced that they were going to build their dock. The land was dry, and as a youngster, Tice couldn’t fathom why they’d want to build a land-locked dock. Nevertheless, the work proceeded: the boy and father dug 5-foot deep post holes in the rocky clay, inserted abandoned telephone poles they found along the road to use as pilings, secured them firmly with layers of tamped down rock and clay, and built their dock. It stands to this day. This year a mother duck built her nest and laid eggs in a flower pot on Tice’s 56-year-old dock. When the water rose, the eggs floated away. Tice put the pot on higher ground, rescued the eggs and replaced them in the nest. Two more times he had to raise the pot as the water level rose. Happily, the duck parents have remained to tend their eggs. Any electrical appliance or device that was not elevated above the water level was damaged. Charlie Diederich of Mountain View Shores commented that by code irrigation pumps should be above the 800-foot line to protect them from high water incidents. “High pressure tanks can be under water, but not the pumps themselves,” he reported, adding wryly, “Many Lakers who did not follow the guidelines will be replacing their pumps.” 58

On the subject of mixing electricity and water John Rupnik of Cedar Key Estates, said, “A number of friends raised their dock refrigerators off the floor; those who left their refrigerators on the deck surface have a water-damaged appliance.” He added, “Floating docks that are built with hinges instead of poles were more subject to damage.” Despite the damage, most families experienced happy times as they enjoyed the rare opportunities that the high water provided. It was fortuitous that it was the Memorial Day weekend since many extended families had gathered together at the lake. Paddling a kayak across the top of the stationary dock was a delightful novelty and made for fun photo ops. Sitting on docks with the chairs nearly submerged was different, and quite refreshing. Cheryl Marcus of Mountain View Shores said, “My kids and my Lab had a blast playing in the Labrador-retrieverdeep dock ‘swimming pool.’ I also enjoyed watching my neighbor section off a part of his dock and make a kiddie pool. Their grandchildren loved it. It was a new experience for all of us, and we enjoyed it!” Kayaking was popular, and many kayakers became Above photo: CATRIONA TUDOR ERLER; Right photo: kathleen riordan

Lake Level Records As the Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus (circa 500 BCE) said, “The only thing that is constant is change.” During normal rainfall — and due to the control of lake levels by the dam — lake levels are fairly constant, but occasionally they rise and fall significantly. The data below, provided by George Porter, spokesman for Appalachian Power, shows high water levels (in feet): April 27, 1978: 799.79 ft. Nov. 5, 1985: 799.50 ft. April 17, 1987: 799.53 ft. April 22, 1992: 797.46 ft. Sept. 29, 2004: 797.42 ft. May 22, 2020: 797.74 ft. Between 2001 and 2003, lake levels were about 6 feet below full pond, which is 795 feet, due to five years of drought. The Smith Mountain Lake Level website dates from October 2004. Their chart shows that since then, the lowest lake levels were as follows (in feet): October 2007:
789 ft.
October 2012:
789 ft.
November 2013: 793 ft. February 2018: 791 ft. Kathleen Riordan took this photo of a dock in Penhook shortly after the rain stopped. A rainbow can be seen in the background. Opposite Page: Dock furniture floats in the water just above the deck surface. 59

rescuers as well. Jennifer Fox of Mountain View Shores wrote that when her son was kayaking, he rescued two stand-up paddleboards that had gone adrift and sorted out a pontoon boat that had floated onto a stationary dock. Another Mountain View Shores resident, Pat Edgerton, put out a thank you on the NextDoor application to the unknown people who retrieved their runaway kayaks. “We thought we had all secured adequately,” she said. “What a relief to see someone took the time to place the kayaks up on our floater or to secure them in the cove at their dock.” On another subject, she added, “Water came up more than 7 feet onto our shoreline.” People took a lot of photos of fish swimming through grasses that weren’t water plants, but lakeside lawns. Walter “Woody” Hogle of Cedar Key Estates found a single-person sailboat floating far from home and took the trouble to find the owner (full disclosure, it was the author’s boat). Saddle Up Beyond the Trail Adventures aims to take clients “off the grid” with dayslong wilderness trail rides on horseback. Story by JERRY HALE

for some quality outdoor time, Moneta’s Beyond the Trail Adventures may offer exactly what you’re after. Now in its second season, Beyond the Trail offers two-, four- and seven-day, customized wilderness horseback trail rides into the mountains of the Jefferson and Washington national forests. Owner and guide Wendy Wilson recently described the experience. “We truly take our clients ‘off the grid,’ into areas where they may not see other riders or hikers for days,” she said. “We’ll ride 5 to 20 miles per day, depending on the group’s horseback stamina. Then we set up a camp; it can be minimalist, with a campfire, MREs supplemented by wild berries we may collect along the way, and hammocks for sleeping. But more leisurely excursions allow for steaks and fire-cooked breakfasts — we tailor to the group’s dietary needs and preferences. All equipment is provided, though clients may bring along a reasonable amount of personal gear and supplies.” Beyond the Trail typically stables about 15 trail riding mounts with others in reserve nearby. “We match each rider to a horse suited to their size and f, by chance, you’re feeling ready
If you’re looking for a different kind of vacation, Beyond the Trail Adventures offers excursions on horseback and training on topics such as navigation basics, tracking, wildlife identification and survival skills. impart a wide variety of outdoor skills.” The firm provides transportation of horses, clients and gear from start to finish. “I enjoy the outdoors, and trekking on horseback was a bucket list item,” said Mike Hull, 65, of Nelson County. “I hadn’t ridden horseback since I was a teenager, so the first day I was saddle-sore. By day two, though, I was getting comfortable; after that, I felt at home in the saddle.” That four-day, three-night excursion began near Bedford Photos COURTESY OF beyond the trail
and ended in Buchanan. Hull, who is retired and now runs Hull Tracking School part time, knew Wilson and Novoa from their shared interest in human tracking. Hull’s business trains anyone interested in tracking, including staff and volunteers from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, for duty on missing persons cases. “The peace and quiet was amazing,” Hull said. “We enjoyed the scenery as we rode, then socialized around the campfire and cleaned up in nearby creeks.” Kimberly Williams, who also knew Wilson, signed on to test the experience. “Wendy wanted to see how the average, non-outdoors enthusiast would handle the trip. I was the ‘girliest’ person she knew — I did the entire trip in mascara!” she said. Williams hadn’t ridden since competing in rodeo in high school but handled the 32 miles in the saddle quite well. “I was comfortable by the second day,” she said. She had geared up by buying a mosquito-proof hammock and food appropriate to her dietary requirements. “The hammock broke the first night, but the guides had spares of everything. They were extremely well-prepared.” she said. “All in all, I proved that an average wimpy novice could enjoy the experience just fine. I’ve signed up for another trip this fall.”

Her fleet consists of a sevenpassenger SUV limo, ideal for hassle-free airport runs ($75 to $100), and a 10-passenger stretch Lincoln that is popular for all-day excursions to wine country. “Our runs typically begin in Rocky Mount, Lynchburg, Bedford or Roanoke and may take six to 10 friends on a trip to Lovingston, where there are 15 or more wineries in a small area — plus a few breweries nearby,” Wilson said. A 10 a.m. to midnight tour runs about $800, and the limos are always stocked with strawberries, cheeses and champagne on ice. Shorter trips, such as a tasting jaunt through lake-area wineries or transportation for weddings, bachelorette parties or safe rides home from house parties start at $125 per hour. “Whatever the customer can imagine, we do our best to accommodate,” Wilson said. “Our drivers — all licensed and insured — act as assistants for the client. If an event runs low on ice, we're on it.”

By KIMBERLY DALFERES
eing a writer brings
with it numerous joys and perils. The thrill of crafting a perfect dialogue interchange between two dynamic characters can be downright euphoric. I can only imagine Jane Austen’s joy in writing the pivotal confrontational moments between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. However, I’m guessing Ms. Austen also toiled continuously to craft one perfect, descriptive sentence. One of my favorite aspects of the writing process is the research of time, place and character. I have a good friend who spent years developing a character who was a sociopathic serial killer. She often joked that if for any reason the police ever needed to review her internet search history, she implored her friends and family to step up and confirm that she’s a writer, not a deranged murderer. My current work-in-progress (WIP, no working title, too superstitious to jinx it) is a story set in the early 1800s. I’ve traversed down the Google rabbit hole for hours seeking information regarding 1800s politics, geography, women’s attire, architecture, the railroad, crime, education, science, medicine, facial hair, the Lewis and Clark expedition, Davy Crockett and the Mormon church. My favorite research subject so far? 1800s swearing. Many of the characters in this evolving WIP are not refined. They are working class, get your hands dirty, take no prisoners kind of folk. So, colorful dialogue would likely be peppered with choice cuss words, put downs and salty banter. Interestingly, the F-word has been in use for quite some time. Swearword “scholars” have found its use in text and writing as far back as the 1500s. However, dropping the F-bomb really isn’t all that inspired given its frequent utilization in the 21st century. Much to my mother’s dismay, I’m a routine utilizer of this utterance — I tried to give up its use this past Lent and failed miserably. Photo GETTY IMAGES

Wearing out your go-to swears in these
trying times?
The 1800s might have just the curse you need.
For my current writing obsession, I’ve been in search of truly inspired swearing that’s historically accurate as well as engaging. What was the everyday language of prostitutes, cowboys and sailors in the early 1800s? Another fun tidbit: The term “cowboy” is most-often attributed to author Jonathan Swift who, back in 1725, used this label to describe a boy tending cows. Isn’t it interesting how that stuck — such a simple word that crept into our vernacular and continues to be used centuries later. Some of the most interesting 19th century swearing and cussing that I’ve discovered to date include: Strumpet: a woman of ill repute, a prostitute. Bootlicker or lickfinger: a suck up. Tarnation: used for damnation.
Bull: sexually potent, considered so impolite that, in lieu of its use, it was common to instead use the term top cow or cow brute. Hornswoggler: a fraud or a cheat. This isn’t really a cuss word, but it’s just too good a word not to use. Pigeon-livered: a coward. If there are any swearing aficionados out there who have suggestions for historically accurate cussing, please send your recommendations my way. I truly appreciate all the $%&$#*! help I can get.
