pr i n g i s h e r e ! Well, almost. With it comes renewal and rejuvenation, something many of us readily welcome now more than ever. Over the past year, family has never been more important. In this issue, you’ll meet one family who loves spending time together and making memories at Smith Mountain Lake. Also, since it’s our annual home and garden issue and with spring on the horizon, our gardening columnist takes us to two areas celebrating Historic Garden Week in April. Plus, we profile one couple’s adventures in remodeling. Finally, you might have noticed our Travels section is conspicuously absent in this issue. That’s because we need more of your photos! If you happen to take a trip this spring and summer, take the Laker along with you, snap a photo and send it to us at letters@smith mountainlaker.com. It might be featured in an upcoming issue.

SNOWY WEEKEND AT SML Snow covered the walkway and docks behind Bridgewater Pointe Condominiums early on Sunday. The first substantial snow of the year hit Smith Mountain Lake over the weekend, dropping more than 5 inches of snow in some areas. Snowfall started late Saturday evening and continued into Sunday before mixing into sleet and freezing rain in some areas. The weekend storm caused slick conditions on several of the area roads which led to multiple cancellations on Monday including both Franklin and Bedford county schools. The Virginia Department of Transportation crews spent most of Friday pretreating roads in preparation for the snow storm. Most primary and secondary roads were cleared by VDOT by Monday.

The Landing Restaurant, a longtime fine-dining establishment at Bernard’s Landing, will relocate to Mariners Landing in Huddleston later this year following an announcement last week. Lake residents Bruno and Tiffany Silva, owners of The Landing Restaurant, will move to a waterfront location at The Pointe at Mariners Landing. The restaurant will be open to the public and accessible by boat or car. An opening date has not been set, but Tiffany Silva said they hope to be operational by May 1. This will be the most recent change at Mariners Landing following its purchase last year by real estate developer Waller Perrow and business partner Tom Branch. The two have spent the past few months reshaping the golf and lake community with several improvements and additions. In addition to relocating The Landing, Perrow said the Silvas will oversee all catering and special events at the resort, will establish a private restaurant at the golf clubhouse called Bruno’s and operate a seasonal poolside
eatery called Chubby’s. The Silvas’ plans also include opening a wine shop and gourmet market called Bottles & Bites. “The wine shop will be open to the public and will feature wine and craft beer, a gourmet market with grab-and-go food items, and gifts,” said Tiffany T. Silva Silva, noting that she’s also working to organize a weekly farmer’s market starting in the spring. “Bruno and I have cherished our time as part of the Bernard’s Landing community, but are excited about expanding our brand and our business offerings significantly by moving to Mariners Landing,” she said. “We are thrilled with the new direction the resort is heading, and this is an exciting opportunity for us, our family and our staff.” Perrow said discussions began earlier this year to move The Landing to Mariners Landing. He said he keeps in touch with the Silvas and what started as casual conversations became a reality very quickly. “Bruno and Tiffany are uniquely qualified to direct the

We couldn’t be more excited about the partnership.” Initially, while Virginia’s COVID-19 restrictions remain in place, Silva said service will be limited to takeout and dockside delivery.

A bill to regulate wakesurfing at Smith Mountain Lake wiped out in the House of Delegates last week. Del. Kathy Byron, R-Bedford, sponsored a bill in response to numerous homeowners surrounding Smith Mountain Lake agitated with wakesurfing boats — which create waves big enough for people to surf without the need of a tow rope — zooming around in the coves. The bill prompted passion-
ate feedback from wakesurfers and homeowners, who are divided on the issue. Wakesurfing has been an increasingly popular water sport at the lake. Homeowners said the wakesurfers are sending large waves crashing into the shorelines, preventing them from enjoying the water and damaging their docks. Wakesurfers said they’ve been largely courteous and aren’t responsible for dock damage. “This is creating big problems, and as you might imagine, a lot of division,” Byron said. Byron’s bill would have kept wakesurfing 200 feet from the shoreline. She was going to try and change it to 150 feet from the

“At the new location, customers can expect the same level of service and dining experience they’re accustomed to,” Silva said. “We look forward to seeing many familiar faces, and we’re also excited about getting to know the Mariners Landing community, and sharing our unique culinary experiences with them. executive board has appointed a search committee led by Chairman Zach Wimmer to conduct a search for the organization’s next executive director. The board of directors has appointed Cheryl Ward to serve as interim executive director during the transition period. Finley will also continue to support the organization as needed to ensure a seamless transition. “On behalf of the board, and the community, while we’re disappointed to see Chris step down, we wish him continued success,” Wimmer said. “Chris assumed his role at a time of transition and has done a great job leading our organization during a difficult year.” Despite the challenges of 2020, Finley helped start the SML Leadership Academy with 14 participants in its inaugural class and secured $30,000 in grant marketing funds from Virginia Tourism Corporation. In April, Virginia becomes a mecca for house and garden lovers from all over the state. They come for Historic Garden Week, the oldest and largest statewide garden event in the nation. Sponsored by The Garden Club of Virginia, visitors have the opportunity to visit a wonderful selection of outstanding private gardens. Garden Week’s Origins Since 1929 (with time taken off during World War II and last year due to COVID) the Garden Club of Virginia has coordinated this vast eightday open house as a fundraiser to generate monies to restore and maintain many of the historic gardens in the Commonwealth. The total tour income from the 87 years of statewide tours has exceeded $17 million, benefiting historic properties such as nearby Poplar Forest (Thomas Jefferson’s “vacation home”), Monticello, Mount Vernon and Montpelier. This fundraiser was the brainchild of a group of Garden Club of Virginia leaders. At their 1928 annual meeting, the delegates were asked if they thought the Garden Club of Virginia should fund the restoration of the grounds of Kenmore Plantation in Fredericksburg according to plans drawn by Charles

F. Gillette. The ladies voted a resounding “yes,” and were delighted to be involved, but according to Ella Williams Smith as told in her memoirs “Tears and Laughter in Virginia and Elsewhere,” were “floored at the prospect of defraying the expense they had assumed.” At the head table during lunch, one woman mentioned the fundraising success enjoyed by the James River Garden Club when they opened private gardens for a fee. Smith describes what happened: The ladies “discussed the feasibility of doing the same thing on a larger scale. Finally, according to Mrs. Smith, the new president, Mrs. Wheelright called across the table to Mother [Mrs. William R. Massie], ‘Sue do you approve of the idea of raising money by opening gardens for a fee?’ Mother replied, ‘Yes,’ and Mrs. Wheelright proceeded to announce to the rest of the ladies in the room that the momentous job would be undertaken. The meeting had adjourned an hour or so before, so naturally that decision was never recorded in the minutes. Everyone responded with enthusiasm, however, and went immediately to work.” The first Garden Week took place in April 1929 and netted $14,000. The following year, when they had more time to organize – and more experience putting it all together – they raised approximately $45,000. The tradition has continued, and over the decades the Garden Club of Virginia has been involved in nearly 50 restoration projects all over the state, preserving historic gardens such as Bacon’s Castle in Surry, Point of Honor in Lynchburg, Stratford Hall, (birthplace of Robert

After last year’s hiatus due to COVID, this year the plans for Historic Garden Week are proceeding. From April 17 through 24, visitors will tour inspired private landscapes, public gardens and historic sites across Virginia, enjoying our beautiful state at the peak of spring. In addition, more than 1,000 world-class floral arrangements created by Garden Club of Virginia members will enhance tour properties. This beloved statewide event will include 30 unique tours organized and hosted by 48 member clubs located from the foothills of the Shenandoah Valley all the way to the beaches of Tidewater. Precautions are in place to protect participants from COVID contamination. The host garden clubs will follow local, state and federal health guidelines. The tours will be in the gardens only, limited numbers will be allowed on each property at a time, and masks will be required. Two tours that are an easy drive from the lake are the ones in Lynchburg on Tuesday, April 20 and in Roanoke on Saturday, April 24. Here are the details.

built for royalty and the landed gentry, the Fox Hill Estate gardens are worth the price of the whole tour. Within the garden are a series of outdoor rooms. Entering the side gate, you find yourself in a walled parterre garden planted with all flowering ornamentals. Follow the axial path to a doorway leading into the back garden. Here is the grand stone terrace overlooking beautifully manicured lawns and centered on the scene, a reflecting pool fed from a waterfall spilling over a raised basin. Wide, sweeping stone staircases lead from the terrace down onto the lawn. Axial paths lead to the fountain and then across the garden through a pair of four-sided arches topped with lath ogee-curved roofs. Another axial path leads through an arched doorway to the brick walled kitchen garden on the opposite side of the house. Here, herbs grow in raised beds, making them easy to harvest. A charming garden house along one side of the kitchen garden makes it possible to sit in comfort while looking out. A short walk down the driveway leads to the barn, which is used for large parties as well as special events. Beyond that is the vegetable garden. It features 12 narrow beds for smaller vegetables and six large beds. All the produce is grown organically. In addition to the meticulously maintained garden, the family keeps bees and chickens. A cutting garden provides fresh flowers for the house, and a greenhouse is valued for overwintering tender plants.

This charming English country manor-style residence was built in 1928 in the midst of Virginia’s English revival architectural and landscape movement. To further emphasize a rural setting within the early suburban development along Peakland Place, previous owners added a circular drive and a walled cottage garden to provide a transition to the side and rear gardens that are original to the property. The front beds have undergone a recent transformation with the addition of American boxwood shrubs. Colorful perennials, such as poppies, delphiniums and irises add color. In the rear, a terrace fashioned from salvaged flagstones from downtown Lynchburg sidewalks juxtaposes the natural earth tones of the brick and stone house. The lush green view from there extends to the far back of the property. Terraced spaces are distinguished by garden elements such as stone walls and arched trellises, as well as color and texture. It celebrates Anne Bethel Spencer (1889-1975), a Harlem Renaissance poet who entertained the likes of Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King Jr., Langston Hughes and Marian Anderson. More than 30 of Spencer’s poems were published in her lifetime, including some that are included in the 1973 edition of Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry. Spencer also was a passionate gardener. She and her husband, Edward, transformed their deep, narrow suburban lot into an Eden. Edward built a framework of robin’s egg blue pergolas, arbors and trellis walls to divide the space, creating garden rooms that distract from the lot’s difficult, narrow dimensions. He also built Spencer a “writing hut” they called Edankraal, which is a central feature of the garden. Spencer planted and tended the colorful flowers that bring the space to life. gardens that cleverly take advantage of the extensive side yard. Hundreds of spring bulbs flower in wide beds alongside ferns, hostas and boxwood. Visitors will appreciate the numerous spring-blooming flowers, mingling with features like espaliered Little Gem magnolia trees and various azaleas, hydrangeas and peonies. Native grasses and cherry laurel grow near a trompe l’oeil arbor on a tall stone wall. For the owners, it is the perfect yoga and meditation retreat.

_ Shade Garden Chic 2812 Rosalind Ave.
The front of the property faces toward the Mill Mountain Star. Stone steps flanked with large oakleaf hydrangeas and Skimmia japonica shrubs lead into the back garden that offers sweeping views of the city and mountains to the north. The garden is surrounded by mature oaks, dogwoods, maples and majestic evergreens, cherry laurels, hostas, hellebores and nine varieties of hydrangeas bloom in this fullsun garden. A fire pit, surrounded by Adirondack chairs, offers a spot to unwind any time of the day or evening. A gardener’s potting bench is tucked behind the lower stone patio where a lush trumpet vine is trellised on the stair rail to an upper deck where the owner Cindy Mohr can view the city as she plans the next phase of her garden.
The picturesque cottage at the corner of Rosalind and 29th Street is a haven for this shade gardener. Visitors can follow the winding stone pathway that wends through plants native to Southwestern Virginia. Laid out with an artist’s eye under a grand beech, overlapping textures of fern, coral bells, heucherella, astilbe and Lenten rose in this almost exclusively whiteblooming woodland-style garden make it a masterpiece of design. A shaded patio with a lion’s head fountain overlooks a 60-year-old magnolia tree. Nearby a sunny perennial garden was planted to attract pollinators. In a discrete corner is a potting bench. This property boasts one of Virginia’s famous “serpentine walls” against which are planted climbing hydrangea, camellias and numerous spring bulbs. Planters interspersed along the garden path provide structure and whimsical touches.

In a single year, this garden’s owners have transformed a basketball court and children’s play area into a gracious space for entertaining, relaxing and meditation. Extensive outdoor hardscaping includes a dry-stacked stone fireplace and a large slate patio complete with an outdoor kitchen. Plantings in this wooded, hillside garden feature weeping cherry, creeping phlox, butterfly mint and red trumpet vine to attract pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds. Uphill, the property boasts a customdesigned Zen garden conceived after a trip to Kyoto, Japan where sublime Buddhist gardens are common. A trip to Japan inspired this Zen style retreat situated at the top of the garden “Zen Garden” in Roanoke.
Designed by a master gardener, this extensive garden combines gracious outdoor living and dining areas with wildlife, bird and pollinatorfriendly plantings. Spring-flowering trees, shrubs and bulbs abound with a focus on native plants and sustainable gardening practices. Highlights include a custom “pondless waterfall,” a private stone courtyard, which is home to the owner’s extensive collection of exotic orchids ranging

from dollhouse-sized to giant, and a rain garden constructed to control erosion and run-off. This garden has received the National Wildlife Federation’s Certified Wildlife Habitat distinction. Here are other points of interest with a focus on gardens in Roanoke. Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden, located in Mill Mountain Zoo • Fifty years ago, the members of the Mill Mountain Garden Club conceived of a plan to adorn the 2 acres of paths leading to Mill Mountain Zoo with a native wildflower garden. Today, the latest generation of MMGC members have undertaken the restoration of this community garden by reimagining the trail system, restoring the large pond and waterfall, removing the invasive, non-native species of plants that threaten to take over, and planting an infusion of native trees and plants.
Visitors will appreciate the hosts of daffodils, snowdrops and fragrant lily of the valley as they stroll through the newly designed ADA-compliant pathways. Lush with rhododendron and dogwood, garden club members hope this woodland garden will inspire horticultural education, conservation and an appreciation of the plants native to this beautiful part of Virginia. Beale Memorial Garden at Hollins University, Cocke Building • Situated in a natural hollow on the campus of Hollins University, this 20-acre garden honors the legacy of civic leader Lucy Preston Beale. Although she did not graduate, Beale attended Hollins in 1863. After she died in 1928, Beale’s daughter, Lucy Beale Huffman, gifted a memorial garden to Hollins and commissioned landscape architect Albert Farnham to design it. Farnham selected the location, a short
distance from a footbridge, and proposed diverting a small stream to create a series of pools and cascades. To the existing informal garden, Farnham added an arcing limestone wall, benches and curvilinear brick paths. The paths provide connections to key campus buildings. The Garden Club of Virginia sponsored the garden’s restoration in 2006. Community Arboretum at Virginia Western Community College, 3094 Colonial Ave. • Two-acres with 11 separate gardens and plant collections are home to approximately 700 labeled plant taxa. The garden collections include a children’s garden with a plant maze and plant zoo. Their newest addition, the city garden includes sustainable features such as rainwater collection systems and drip irrigation. The arboretum also is an official site for an All-America Selections Display Garden.

Modern Makeover A 30-year-old waterfront home finds new life — and a new look — under Jerry and Janet Potter. story by FERNE HALE • after photography by JEN CHACONAS, JOLLYJEN PHOTOGRAPHY

love lake living and have built three homes at Smith Mountain Lake. The first was upstream from Hales Ford Bridge at channel marker R-31.Two in The Water's Edge followed; the first of those was on the 2006 Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour and featured a Disney-like “Main Street” lower level. In 2013 the Potters wandered north to be closer to their daughter. Six months later they settled on Dataw Island, South Carolina, where they bought and remodeled a home. But after three years there — with the heat and mosquitoes frustrating Jerry's passion for golf — they decided to return to where they had been the happiest: Smith Mountain Lake. “We looked at so many lake houses, erry and Janet Pot ter

I got sick of it,” Janet said. “I finally told Jerry, 'Just pick something you can deal with remodelingwise, and I'll be happy with it.' He took me at my word, bought this one without me visiting it, and here we are.” “It needed some work,” Jerry said, wryly understating the task he'd bought into. “There was a generous stack of realtor cards on the kitchen counter — representing people who had looked and said, 'No way am I taking that on.'” For starters, the living room in the 30-year-old house had a heavily-textured ceiling. “Not just 'popcorn look,'” Jerry recalled. “It reminded me of stalactites hanging down.” Instead of sanding the ceiling smooth, painters had covered it over with about 2 inches of plaster. “That took some significant overhead work,” added Jerry, who has avoided ladders after falling two stories while painting at their second home in The Water’s Edge.
Everything but the Stove • The Potter’s kitchen was a nearly complete gut job: Everything was replaced but the gas stove. They installed cabinets, countertops, a new sink, breakfast bar and a wooden backsplash crafted and installed by Jerry Potter. Because of all the reconfiguring, new flooring was also required.

The Potters contracted with B&A Construction that had built their other three lake homes for structural parts of the renovation that were beyond Jerry's current rehab abilities. “Things have gotten harder for me with the passing years,” he said. Fortunately son Mark, a licensed contractor, found time to travel from Wilmington, N.C., to lend his dad a hand at times. The kitchen was a gut job. Everything was replaced but the gas stove. New cabinets, countertops, a new sink, breakfast bar, and a wooden backsplash crafted and installed by Jerry. Because of all the reconfiguring, new flooring was also required. “Of course it's a mess when you're living here while the work is going on,” Janet said. “For two weeks, I washed dishes in a plastic tub on the deck. When the laundry area was moved, I made trips to a Rocky Mount laundromat for a month. Then the deck became a construction zone as Jerry added 6 feet of width and dressed things up out there.” Those improvements included a live edge serving bar under the kitchen window. A large live edge bar also graces one end of the deck. “I've

Wood’s a Winner • Jerry Potter enlarged the guest bathroom’s walk-in shower and added a vanity with a live-edge maple countertop and vessel basin. A multi-jet “tower shower” Jerry found on Amazon adds a modern touch amid the rustic wood. His office (below) features slabs of ash wood that slide open on barn door tracks leading to a guest bedroom.

discovered the beauty of live edge slabs,” Jerry said, “and have used several in this house.” The former master suite had a miniscule bathroom, so walls were knocked out, the former bathroom area became part of the bedroom and space was used from the adjacent den to create a dressing room and a large bathroom with a walkin shower, complete with a multi-jet shower Jerry found on Amazon. The remaining den space was reconfigured into a pantry, powder room, laundry and craft room where Janet can “do her thing,” which includes painting, sewing and flower arranging. It opens onto a potting patio overlooking the lake. Upstairs there are two guest bedrooms, one of which had walls removed from a sitting area, to create a spacious bedroom. On the lower level there’s a large family room with a fireplace that Jerry converted from gas to wood-burning. His office adjoins the family room, which is on the way to a guest bedroom that features slabs of ash wood that slide open on barn door tracks.
“Grandson Grayson learned to use a level and nail gun by helping Pop-Pop install the gray shiplap boards behind the bed,” Janet said. “It was a bonding opportunity in more ways than one.” Here, too, Jerry has enlarged the bathroom and created a walk-in shower with another impressive “shower tower” on one of the tall walls. “We saved a bundle by shopping hard for this and lots of other stuff we've installed in this house,” Jerry said. The guest suite also features a vessel sink atop a maple live-edge vanity top. Outside the lower level, Jerry has installed a putting green to help keep his short game sharp when time allows. It overlooks a new cart path that leads to the dock nestled in a cove off Becky's Creek. Carpenter/plumber/installer/fixer Jerry is quick to credit his bride of 56 years with the vision that makes their home unique. “I build stuff; Janet has the creativity to make it look really special,” he said. “We're a pretty good team.”

Several family members have followed Terry Bradley Parker and her husband Jeff in acquiring their own property at Smith Mountain Lake. story by JERRY HALE portrait by HEATHER TURNER

or more than a half-century, Smith
Mountain Lake has been a melting pot of sorts. Generations of families have developed an affinity for lake life. Some have ties to the lake since it first reached full pond in the mid-1960s, while others discovered the jewel of the Blue Ridge years later. The Bradley family’s initial exposure to lake life occurred in the late 1990s at Buggs Island and Lake Gaston, where Terry Bradley Parker and husband, Jeff, enjoyed several vacations with two other friend families. One of those families pitched the idea for renting at SML for vacation in 2000.

“It was dreamy,” Terry recalled of that first experience. “We had a ball and thought SML surpassed the other lakes because of the water conditions and the views.” One of the couples soon bought property on Craddock Creek, which became the “the place” for the three couples and their families to gather for summer fun together. Enamored as she had become with the lake, Terry suggested a rental on Hatcher Creek as the site for a Bradley family gathering in 2005. Terry’s older sister, Barbara Kayes, had some history with SML: she and her husband had stayed at Ber-

The Bradley/Parker grandchildren enjoy a cool treat on a summer day while enjoying the lake. Fond memories of swimming in the lake and taking rides on the boat are made during the summer months (opposite page, clockwise). Patriarch Bill Bradley often serves as grill master for family get-togethers.

nard’s Landing Resort during trips from Suffolk to Virginia Tech’s home football games years earlier. Those visits were off-season for on-water activity, but Barbara had been smitten by the views and the serenity of the resort’s setting. The vacation exposure reactivated the affinity, and she eventually bought a place at The Waterways near R-25. After more vacations as guests of their friends, Terry and Jeff bought a place just a few years later. Clearly that Bradley family vacation in 2005 set the stage for what was to follow. After repeatedly joining his siblings and finding the lake considerably more appealing than the brackish, swiftcurrent Potomac River near home in Goochland County — and the smaller, much busier Lake Anna — older brother and water enthusiast Buck and his wife, Sue, purchased a condo at Mariners Village in 2014. And with several of his offspring now enamored with the lake, family patriarch George Bradley, 89, found it contagious as well. He’d always hoped to live on the water and recently purchased

Middle brother Thom, 62, of Midlothian, is the latest Bradley to acquire lake property. He and wife Karen purchased a lot at Emerald Bay last year and look forward to spending this summer enjoying the lake with their blended family of four girls and one boy and getting organized to build. “Thom has built several of his former homes,” Terry said, “so will likely be deeply involved in construction of whatever they decide to build here.” Meanwhile, Terry and Jeff have sold their home

in Powhatan and are becoming full-timers, though Jeff still enjoys his work in Richmond and will split time between an apartment there and the couple’s lake home. Long avid water-skiers, they’ve added wakesurfing to their favorite pastimes. Like so many others, the Bradley/Parker clan has found that combining lake time with family time is good for healthy family relationships. “We’re creating precious memories together that will last forever,” Terry said. “We all share a love for the water, right down to grandchildren Harper and Jack (both 6), Wyatt (5) and George, who’s going on 2. Those kids would be in the water 24/7 if their parents didn’t drag them out to eat and sleep.” Summer at the lake often includes a visit from the Ice Cream Boat to enjoy cold treats dockside for the kids (right). Terry and Jeff (opposite page) execute a Virginia Tech “flap leap” from the top of their party deck.

Lakers Jim King and Mary Miller make spirits bright by decking their halls with holiday decorations.
Dock Tale Hour
by KIMBERLY DALFERES
Holiday Desert Spring rains might be ahead, but when it comes to time off, March and April are as dry as the Sahara.
I
admit, I’m not a big fan of March and April. Yes, we have our dreams of Spring, as we peer across our sleeping flower beds and seek out signs of delicate daffodils peaking up through the mulch. But, these two months can be cold and dreary, and truth be told I don’t really like winter nor snow (let the hate mail begin). Please, stop right there as you rise to argue the merits of winter sports. I. Do. Not. Ski. I’ve tried skiing twice in my life, and I’m comfortable with my decision that strapping sticks to my feet and hurling to my death is not my jam. To add serious insult to injury, from Feb. 15, 2021 (President’s Day) to May 31, 2021 (Memorial Day) there are 104 days — over 100 days without an authorized break. During what can be the bleakest days of the year, there are no national holidays. There are no officially sanctioned reasons to shorten our weekly 40+ hours of hard work, sweat, and toil. November has two (!) designated federal holidays, while March and April have

none. We must wait until May is almost over before we can partake of a threeday weekend respite. This March-April holiday desert is flat out bad for our collective soul. We do have our unofficial breaks. March 17 certainly offers up a means to celebrate all that is green, Irish, and for the most part beer related. However, St. Patrick’s Day is smack dab in the middle of the week in 2021 on a Wednesday — which means many of us are likely to be calling in sick on Thursday the 18th. Bosses know this. Any boss who schedules an important meeting on St. Patrick’s Day or the day after is downright mean, and most definitely in need of some time off. I think the Swedes might be on to something. I recently learned about lillördag, also known as “Little Saturday.” In the Nordic culture there is a tradition to regard Wednesday as a micro-holiday in the middle of the week. I don’t think it would take much for us to embrace lillördag as the new Hump Day. However, I’m a little uncertain as to whether this
mid-week hooray is celebrated with a full day off, or more likely evening-only festivities. Either way, we still risk the dreaded Thursday post-St. Patrick’s Day implications discussed previously. Clearly, what’s needed here is for leadership — I’m looking at you Congress — to figure out some options for national holidays in March and April. Yep, I looked it up, and federal holidays are designated by the U.S. Congress via Title V of the U.S. code (5 U.S.C. § 6103). I know that members of Congress are busy people who need to tackle important issues. Nonetheless, I do think they could fit this priority into their legislative schedules. Hey, how about national Break Day? Seriously, we all need a break, especially after the year that was 2020. I even know the perfect date: April 1. Who wants to help me start the petition? Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties. Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
