hich would you prefer — a fixer upper or a new construction? For many, the answer is simple: A new construction allows homeowners to start fresh, with a clean slate, to build from the ground up. For others, a fixer upper might be the way to go, especially if you find that perfect waterfront lot. In this issue, meet Jane and Roger Winters, a couple who opted for the latter. They discuss their yearlong renovation journey, including their advice on renovation do’s and don’ts. Plus, check out their home’s amazing transformation in our before and after photos. If you’re thinking about taking on a home or landscaping project, our home and garden listings starting on page 52 could help you get the jump-start you need. Looking to do some traveling this year? We asked several seasoned travelers to share their tips and tricks with you. Check out their advice, as well as photos of some of the amazing places they’ve visited on page 72. And if you’ve gone on any special trips that you’d like to share, send them to us for publication in our Travels section. Finally, as we gear up for summer and publishing monthly from May to August, we need your help! We are looking for old photographs of scenes, buildings and people from areas around the lake, including Huddleston, Moneta, Hardy and Wirtz (Burnt Chimney). If you have any you’d like to share, email them to us at editor@smithmountainlaker.com.
After decades in more traditional houses (think red brick, white pillars) Jane and Roger Winters took a chance on a modern project home in Wirtz. Read all about it on page 44.

Now is the time to get a head start on the indoor planting season for annuals, perennials and vegetables, such as these squash seedlings.

Imagine harvesting a kaleidoscope of carrots with evocative names such as ‘Atomic Red’, ‘Cosmic Purple’, ‘Lunar White’ and ‘Solar Yellow.’ Or heirloom tomatoes with histories dating back hundreds of years. How about growing the orange African eggplant ‘Turkish Orange’ that produces a round, green-striped fruit with a rich, non-bitter flavor? Or how about growing the heirloom eggplant ‘Thai Yellow Egg’? When ripe, it is a golden yellow orb the size of an egg. When you start plants from seed, you can grow an extraordinary range of plant varieties that aren’t available in nursery packs of started plants. It opens up the possibilities of a great exploration of the wonderful diversity of the plant kingdom. In addition to the availability of plants you don’t normally find in nurseries, you can save money. On average a packet of seeds costs the same as the small, four-packs of young plants at a nursery. With a little effort sowing and nurturing the seeds, for the price of the four plants, you can have dozens. Now is the time to get a head start on growing the annuals and perennials (fruits and vegetables, herbs and flowers) indoors from seed. Candidates for starting indoors are plants that take a long time to germinate and develop. In the edible realm, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, basil and strawberries are plants you should start early.

Timing is key Timing is important when starting seeds indoors. Too soon, and the sprouted seeds will outgrow their pots and may become malnourished as their nutrient needs increase with size. Start too late, and your plants won’t be big enough to put outdoors once the weather is reliably warm. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all ideal date for starting seeds indoors. Quick germinating and growing plants will need a shorter lead time; slow germinators need longer. Check the seed packets for the typical days to germination for each variety of plant and the days to maturity. For example, snapdragons germinate in 8 to 14 days and mature in 80 to 100 days. To give them time to develop a root system and a healthy set of true leaves, they should be planted 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost. Eggplant requires a lead time of only 6 to 8 weeks. Bottom heat speeds germination. At Smith Mountain Lake, the average last frost date ranges from May 11 through 20, one of the later regions
in Virginia (Lynchburg’s and Roanoke’s last frosts range between May 1 and May 10).
Containing your seeds Tons of ink have been spilled describing the wide variety of containers that work for starting seeds. Yes, yogurt containers, paper towel rolls, plastic milk jugs and soda bottles all work. However, if you are sowing more than a few seeds, and you don’t fancy a cluttered combination of vessels, opt for the commercially made reusable plastic propagation trays with as few as four and as many as 128 planting cells. Alternatively, you can purchase biodegradable peat pot trays that will decompose when you bury them in the ground with the plants at soil level.
Growing medium You can buy bags of seed-starting mix from garden centers and home supply stores — even some grocery stores, but it is easy and less expensive to make your own. The ideal properties for a seed starting mix are a sterile blend of light, permeable materials that are low

in nutrients. Julie Thompson-Adolf, author of the book “Starting & Saving Seeds,” recommends equal parts of vermiculite, peat moss, fine sphagnum moss or coco peat and perlite. The vermiculite absorbs water and fertilizer nutrients and releases them gradually, thus benefitting seedlings. Peat moss and sphagnum moss help promote good root development, but neither are readily renewable resources. Made out of coconut husks, coco peat is a good alternative to peat and sphagnum moss. The air-filled fibers provide both porosity and water-holding capability. Perlite, which is expanded volcanic ash, promotes good drainage.

been on, put them on a timer. These tender babies still need a warm environment, but like Goldilocks, they don’t want it too hot or too cold. It must be just right. The ideal temperature varies with plants, but generally between 65 degrees and 75 degrees works well. Placing seed cells on top of seedling mats, which are essentially waterproof electric blankets, is an easy way to keep the soil and roots warm.
Building strong plants When your seeds have sprouted and developed their first true leaves, it’s time to begin preparing them for the great outdoors. The seedlings are fragile so you don’t want to maim them through rough treatment, but they do benefit from a little toughening up. Strengthen the stems by gently brushing your hand over the plants several times a day so they sway slightly. Doing so teaches them to deal with wind when they get outside. Some experts recommend setting up a fan to blow on the plants, but that also dries out the growing medium, which isn’t good.
Potting up seedlings If you have planted more than one seed in each growing cell or if you started with small cells, the seedlings will need transplanting once they have one or two sets of true leaves. Fill your larger containers with moist potting medium and set them on a tray. Then gently lift each seedling from its cell with an old fork or chopstick and insert it into a hole you’ve made for it in the new container. If you have more than one plant in each seedling cell, gently tease the roots apart and plant each one. Firm the soil around the base of each plant and straighten any that may be listing to one side. Add more mix if necessary so the soil level is just below the first set of leaves. Place the plants on a tray under grow lights.
Hardening off seedlings Before you plant the seedlings in the garden, you are wise to go through a process called hardening off, which prepares the plants for the more rigorous environment outdoors. Begin by putting the plants outside in a protected spot for about an hour the first day. Gradually increase the time outdoors by an hour a day, moving the plants to more open, sunny areas as they grow stronger. If the weather is too cold one day, skip it. Be sure to keep the plants watered; they’ll dry out more quickly when they’re outside. Once your plants are acclimated to being outside, and the danger of frost has past, you can transplant them into their new garden home. Treat yourself to the immense satisfaction of nurturing a living thing from a dried seed to a flourishing plant by starting seeds indoors this spring.

A Guide For All Your Seed Needs Starting & Saving Seeds: Grow the Perfect Vegetables, Fruits, Herbs, and Flowers for Your Garden • By Julie Thompson-Adolf. Cool Springs Press. 160 pages. Hardcover. $25
“S
tarting & Saving Seeds: Grow the Perfect Vegetables, Fruits, Herbs, and Flowers for Your Garden” by Julie Thompson-Adolf is a superb reference resource for growing seeds. This book is one of the most complete volumes covering the topics of sowing and collecting seeds. With its illustrated tutorials, it is valuable for both the beginning and seasoned gardener. It is user-friendly, appealing to the eye and rich with clearly explained, practical information for sowing seeds both indoors and outside. You’ll also learn how to save and store seeds, including tricky ones such as eggplant. Also included are creative projects such as how to make seed bombs (a fun activity to do with grandchildren), create homemade seed tapes from toilet paper and to sow seeds outside in homemade mini-greenhouses made of upcycled materials. Thompson-Adolf’s technique is an excellent way to cope with seeds that need a period of chill (stratification) before they will germinate. The plant section, which covers a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs, includes specific growing information for each. For seed sowing guidance, you can check the planting depth, the ideal seedstarting soil temperature, timing for sowing and light requirements for each listed plant, as well as details on collecting saving seeds for next year.

as retired residents, who are talented in numerous artistic fields, take time to pursue their cultural passions. Vocal and instrumental music, painting, photography, quilting, furniture-making, wood turning and jewelry-making are among favorite pastimes. And, thanks to the Lake Players, so is amateur theater. The lake’s thespian tradition began in 1995 as a playreading group proposed by Wally Lenahan and Don Nelson. They placed an article in a local newspaper asking if there were others who might be interested in joining to contact them. Although she was still living in New York at the time, Connie Canova saw the article and was overjoyed since she had planned to retire to the lake. She had performed in many musicals and plays and had wondered if there would any opportunities for drama.

“I wrote them a letter, a snail-mail letter since this was pre-email,” Canova said. “We moved here in July, and our first meeting was in August. We read plays, unrehearsed, in people’s homes. Almost before we’d fully unpacked I found myself heading up the group.” It was a role that lasted on and off for about 10 years. Leslie Santapaul also led the group for two years. By then the Play Readers were part of Smith Mountain Arts Council, and Santapaul was a member of the SMAC board. “We soon learned that comedy was the way to go,” Santapaul recalled. “We tried a couple of dramas, but they were not so well-received. The fun-loving residents of SML wanted to laugh!” Canova had then teamed up with Nancy King, a former Lynchburg middle school teacher who, as the school’s drama coach, produced three plays and one

big musical each year for eight years running. She also acted and directed plays at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center. “After being in plays and musicals in high school, I really wanted to be an actress,” King said. “I even worked with Jean Stapleton when I was 15 at a playhouse summer program.” However, when King went to college, she chose to pursue an education degree and stay involved in theater whenever she could. Under the leadership and direction of Canova and King, the group grew sophisticated. Play readings moved to neighborhood centers, such as Beechwood Shores, that had room for an expanded audience. Before long, there were productions with sets, a stage crew, costumes, sound effects, fully rehearsed “blocking” to make the action on stage happen smoothly and cast members who had memorized their lines. “Committing a part to memory requires you to really get into your role,” King said. “Lots more work for everyone, but very rewarding for cast, crew and audience alike. Everyone agreed it made for some wonderfully entertaining evenings.” Phil Servidea recalled being a part of those play readings. “I did at least two plays where we read our parts and actually found those more difficult to perform because reading lines was a distraction from eye contact with other players,” he said. Servidea’s most recent memorized role was in “Over the River and Through the Woods,” where he played Frank, a wise grandfather with strong traditional values. “It was a very enjoyable experience, and I’ve expressed an interest in performing in more.” Audiences might also remember “Dixie Swim Club,” set around the reunion of five former college swim team girlfriends and staged at the conference center at Bernard’s Landing. By then the Lake Players, as they were called, had outgrown the center at Beechwood Shores and needed to schedule three performances to accommodate the audiences. These days, finding a suitable venue continues to be a challenge. Plays previously have been performed at Resurrection Catholic Church and at the W.E Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center.

John Maresca recalled co-directing two performances of “Weekend Comedy” at the 4-H center with Sandy Sampson. “Before directing, I had served as a stagehand and, later, in lead roles as a French chef, a not-so-reverent priest and a scoundrel golfer,” Maresca said. “It was a lot of fun, very rewarding and exciting. The adrenaline flows; you get a real connection with others involved in the play and also with the audience. The SMAC plays are a great outlet for anyone who’s ever thought being in a play would be fun.” The Lake Players also have spawned several musical productions, including “A Tribute to Broadway” and a Cole Porter revue, both directed by Nancy King, as well as “A Salute to Irving Berlin,” directed by Elda Nichols. Anne Motley is currently in charge of the Lake Players, with the directing coordinated by a committee. Typically the group schedules three performances a year, including play readings, musical revues and memorized plays.

Pacific Island Mission Led To A Chance Encounter the U.S. Navy’s multiengine propeller aircraft training in September 1968 and was assigned to Naval Air Station Agana, Guam, in the Mariana Island chain. There he flew the HU-16D Albatross seaplane and a four-engine transport, the Super Constellation. The Albatross was a true amphibian, able to operate on runways, as well as from the water, and despite being ideal for search and rescue missions in the Pacific islands, was phased out of naval operations by 1973. But his most memorable flight was as aircraft commander in that twin-engine relic. “The mission was to Yap Island, delivering 3,000 pounds of priority medicine and supplies to a church mission complex. Pilot And His Bride Fly Off Into The Sunset charlie walker adores airplanes and flying. He's logged more than 1,300 hours in the cockpits of private planes. He also loves taking aerial photos and has been active in the SML Pilots Club for 23 years. His favorite flying memory, he recalled, goes back to the day he married Lib, his late wife of 49 years. “I began my flying lessons in Prince George’s County, Maryland, back in 1966. My instructor soon gave me carte blanche to ‘cross-country’ solo anywhere I wanted. It was, after all, my airplane. I had purchased a nearly-new Cessna 172 in anticipation of getting my pilot's license and each hour aloft helped prepare me for my final flight test with the FAA pilot examiner. “Well, a very important event was approaching: getting married. I desperately wanted to fly my soon-to-be bride off in our plane for the honeymoon trip. But that required successful completion of the FAA check ride. So I confidently scheduled my exam flight for the morning of our wedding day. I soloed to Easton, Maryland, met the examiner and passed the check flight. 'Get yourself to the church on time,' he said as we finished. I did. “And I thought all was perfect until the best man asked for the ring. Oops! With the distraction of the flight test, I had left the ring in my car, which was hidden in my office's garage. My mother loaned us her wedding ring, which until then had never left her finger, for the ceremony. “But I had my pilot's license and a new wife, and off we flew to a wonderful honeymoon in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, and a life that included lots of flying together.”

ered strategically important and had not been destroyed in the Island Hopping campaign. Still, I was stunned by what I observed upon arrival at the Yap airport. There was a Japanese Zero that had been shot down in a dogfight over Yap, standing nearly vertical where it had crashed nose-first. The oxidized red meatball markings on the aircraft gave it a surreal look. Bomb craters pock-marked the entire area. All of the parked Zeros showed significant damage that had knocked them out of the war. There were countless pieces of aircraft engine cylinders, propellers and air frames spread throughout the battle scene, where they remained undisturbed as if time had stopped in April, 1944. “We were met by a grateful, heavily accented missionary, and while the cargo was being offloaded and the aircraft refueled, he drove my co-pilot and me on a brief tour,” Robbins said. “Along the way, he asked detailed questions about the performance of our seaplane, and I thought it unusual that a missionary would be so interested in our aircraft. We later learned he had been a former German Luftwaffe ace, flying the vaunted Focke Wulf 190. Learning what he could about American aircraft was in his training — and still second nature.”

‘This Is Your Captain, Darth Vader ...’ after graduating from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, and logged nine years piloting USCG command transport and drug interdiction jets. He’s about to retire from his civilian career — nearly 33 years with Delta Air Lines, including 14 years as captain of trips to Europe, the Far East and South America in the latest long-haul aircraft. Sultze recalled an experience, which, like Walker’s, involved his own wife, Kathy. “As a newly-minted Delta captain on 737s, my flight from Eastern Lehigh Valley International to Atlanta experienced several minor maintenance issues before takeoff. Then, on the connecting flight from Atlanta to Houston, a warning horn indicated a pressurization problem as the plane reached 10,000 feet. The cockpit crew donned oxygen masks, contacted air traffic control and reported the intent to level off below the altitude that would trigger cabin oxygen masks

to deploy. “As I made the return-to-Atlanta announcement to the cabin through my oxygen mask, I thought to myself, ‘Boy, I sound an awful lot like Darth Vader.’” A week later, Kathy had hitched a ride on the Atlanta to Washington, D.C., trip that Sultze was piloting and found herself sitting next to a passenger who shared his experience of a flight the previous week. Kathy recalled the man telling her: “I knew we were OK because although the captain sounded like Darth Vader, he kind of laughed as he talked to us.” Sultze also shared a more harrowing flight memory. “It was Oct. 14, 2001, just a month after 9/11. An Orthodox Jewish passenger decided to conduct a prayer ritual in the aisle that scared the daylights out of our flight attendants and most of the passengers. We did an emergency descent into Charlotte with F-16s trailing our wingtips.”

Flew With First Women Pilots In The Air Force 24 years in the Air Force, much of it as a flight instructor in jet trainers. Following his military career, he spent 20 years as a Junior ROTC instructor at Maryland’s Oxon Hill High School, where he instituted a flight training program that partnered with Tuskegee Airmen for in-cockpit instruction. Many of his students earned pilot’s credentials and went on to military flying and careers in aerospace. Holskey is especially proud of being the instructor that flew with the first 10 female Air Force student pilots. All went on to flying careers in the military, and one is now chief pilot for Highways LLC Corporate Jets and has a daughter who holds a commercial pilot’s license. “As class commander, I did in-flight evaluations for each phase of their flight training,” Holskey said. “The ladies showed exceptional hand-eye coordination and were outstanding in academics. They learned those airplanes inside and out.” Later, Holskey trained pilots to fly more advanced A7 and A10 jets. “Both of those were single seaters, so the instructor flew ‘close chase’ in another aircraft, just behind and below the students. I had to mirror their movements while talking them through complex maneuvers, all the time writing critiques of their performance on a knee board. Some of those flights went 4½ hours and involved in-air refueling and some very nasty weather,” Holskey said.

His home airstrips included nine aircraft carriers on which he made 965 landings, almost a third of those at night. “The last one was every bit as challenging as the first,” he said. “It never gets easy.” Despite all those post-mission returns and a stint as commanding officer of a combat F4 fighter squadron from 1973-74, his most rewarding Navy assignment was as wing commander of an 800-student pilot training squadron in Corpus Christi, Texas. “Things needed fixing when I got there, and we ended up meeting all our goals for delivering trained pilots to active multi-engine, jet fighter and helicopter units. That makes me very proud.” Riggs’ most memorable flight was a 1972 bombing run over North Vietnam, just one of his 97 combat missions. “The enemy guns were quiet that night, so we got the OK for three consecutive drop passes,” he said. “On my third, I rolled out after the bomb release and then, feeling my oats, I suddenly leveled off and lit my afterburner. Just then, the sky on my left lit up along my expected line of travel. An anti-aircraft gunner had been waiting for me to follow the typical path and shot where I should have gone. It was a narrow miss.” Riggs recounted another close call: “In May 1973, at 23,000 feet, my horizontal stabilizer malfunctioned and sent the plane pitching toward the ocean. At 10,000 feet, my radar intercept officer punched the eject button, and we both parachuted into the drink. Fortunately, we were rescued 20 minutes later.” Regarding carrier flying today, Riggs said, “A catapult shot takes those pilots from 0 to 180 MPH in 2.6 seconds, and it’s just as hard to get back aboard at night and in bad weather as it was in my day. The last 100 feet are man driving machine. These pilots are something special.”

very home we had ever lived in was very traditional: red brick, two stories with white pillars out front,” Jane Winters recalled. “When we began shopping for a home at the lake, one of the first ones we saw was decidedly nontraditional. We dismissed it easily. After all, we had a house full of antiques that wouldn’t look right in an open-concept contemporary.” Therefore, Jane and husband Roger looked at more houses. A lot of them. They soon discovered that traditional-design houses had small, walled-off rooms that didn’t showcase lake views or suggest the casual, vacation-like lifestyle they were seeking. The Winters family were avid boaters. They had rented summer homes at Smith Mountain Lake for about 20 years and knew they wanted deep water and a quiet, light-traffic waterfront away from the main channel and well suited to water skiing and wakeboarding. “We saw one house that was great but

the water at the end of the dock was only 4 feet deep — at full pond,” Roger said. “We planned to ski and wakeboard and swim off our dock. Four feet of water wasn’t going to cut it.” The couple had built two of their previous houses, but for this, they didn’t have the luxury of time. Roger was starting a new job in Roanoke; Jane would be consulting full time, and they had taken a three-month sublet at Bernard’s Landing. Soon they would need a permanent place to live. But after seeing and dismissing many more houses, they were drawn to a home in Wirtz. “It was painted blue, and its front pillars were the size of toothpicks,” Jane recalled. But it had potential — and solid bones. Roger added, “We became attracted to the good aspects of the house: the openness of the great room, the large windows with every room looking out on the lake, a generous garage, a gently-sloping lot with deep water at the dock.” Perhaps a remod-

el could make it appealing. They signed a contract to buy the home in May 2016. Now knowing they would be relocating to 2,900 square feet of contemporary space, they had a five-hour auction at their Ripley, West Virginia, home and sold 85 percent of their belongings, including their dining room set, china cabinets, numerous antique furniture pieces and a baby grand piano. Through their realtor, Mike DeGiorgi, the couple met Chip Conway, an architect and contractor who did the major remodeling on what he dubbed their “California contemporary.” Though Roger’s helping time was limited to nights and weekends because of his job, Conway let him tackle finishing projects such as hanging all the doors, installing and painting trim and tiling backsplashes in the kitchen and bar. Conway and his crew needed about six months for the heavy work — from January through May — and Roger’s finishing continued after the work crew had left. On the main level, the biggest change was replacing the carpet and tile floor-

ing with hardwood. The kitchen got new quartz countertops, hardware, a tile backsplash, a new sink and pendant lights. Two sliding barn doors replaced wooden ones, one concealing the new, convenient laundry room. In the master bedroom, a wall was knocked out to reconfigure the bathroom. Formerly, one could look in the bathroom door when entering the front door, so the bathroom door was moved, a walk-in closet was added and the master bath, a complete gut job, was re-done to feature a large shower in place of the former Jacuzzi tub. “It was pink and surrounded by floorto-ceiling mirrors,” Jane said. “When Chip first saw it, he joked, ‘You saw that pink monstrosity and you still bought this place?’” Except for a small bathroom, the lower level was unfinished and had been used by the previous owners for storing miscellaneous items and a personal watercraft during the off-season. Walls, the ceiling and floors were needed throughout this area, and this is where Conway did his wizardry. He designed and executed a nicely finished family room with a bar/ kitchenette, updated the bathroom with a new vanity and created an office for Jane that can serve as a third guest room, courtesy of a queen-sized Murphy bed. On all the lower level floors, Roger and Jane opted for luxury vinyl tile, which looks like wood but is totally resistant to scratches and water. The couple found a talented woodworker who fashioned their new dining table, bar cabinets and wooden bar top that Conway had designed. This same craftsman made a table and shelves for Jane’s office out of 50-year-old African mahogany that Jane’s family had obtained from Ghana while living there during her childhood. Roger and Jane’s home renovation spanned about a year. The project began by painting areas that wouldn’t be renovated followed by six months of Conway’s work — supplemented by Roger’s finishing work — and followed by more painting, including the couple doing all the lower level painting themselves. “Chip and his crew were absolutely

great to work with,” Roger said. “By letting us do the things we could do, money was saved or redirected to other parts of the job.” With a successful and minimally stressful remodel fresh in mind, the couple offered their advice to anyone considering such an undertaking: • Be patient with the mess and the process. • Be prepared to blow your budget by 20 percent or more. You either add on or find flaws that must be fixed along the way. • Realize what you are capable of doing yourself and what makes sense to pay someone experienced to do. Don’t get in
over your head. • Plan to spend time shopping. If you know what you want going in, it will help reduce shopping time. • Establish good lines of communication with the contractors. Decide who will be the decision maker in major areas such as structure, decorating, fixtures, among others, and let the contractors know in advance. Jane and Roger are happy with their new nontraditional home. “The house is bright and airy and showcases our views and wonderfully accessible waterfront,” Jane said. “Our family and friends have discovered how great it is to visit, and that’s just what we wanted.”

sections of Smith Mountain Laker magazine is its Travels section (pages 16-19). That’s where Smith Mountain Lake residents post photos of their most recent travel excursions — both at home and abroad. The Coriascos have visited 59 countries (some multiple times) and have made nearly as many trips to U.S. destinations. The Miekinas previously worked as tour directors for

Other files pertinent to a given trip can be stored there, too. It keeps everything you might need securely in one place; it’s handy and low cost. 2. Insurance The website, insuremytrip.com, offers travel insurance that you can compare with what your travel agent or tour provider recommends.
Safeguarding your finances 1. Avoid carrying more cash than absolutely needed at any time. Wait until arriving at your destination to get the local currency you’ll need. Overseas exchange rates and fees are usually more attractive than what you’ll get from your home bank. But remember to get enough cash at the airport to cover transportation to your hotel, if needed. Once abroad, use the services from known banks to withdraw funds using an ATM card — they are safe and offer the best rates. ATMs are found in most airports and cities; avoid airport exchange places as their rates are seldom appealing. 2. Consider a separate checking account for travel, not linked with any others that you use at home. This

precludes someone raiding your main account as a result of travel exposure. Deposit the funds you estimate needing for travel, then withdraw any excess once you return home. 3. Use ATM accounts and credit cards that do not charge foreign exchange fees. 4. Inform banks and credit card companies when and where you will be traveling. Using credit cards avoids needing to carry a lot of currency, but advise the card companies of your travel plans so they won’t reject foreign purchases from the countries you will visit. 5. Buy with credit cards whenever possible and avoid carrying more than petty cash. Have a main and a backup credit card. The Coriascos favor credit cards that provide the most airline miles and have air-milesassociated credit cards with the airlines they use the most, set up so their miles and bonuses get credited to their individual accounts.
Passport and valuables safekeeping “We make copies of the main pages of our passports and each carry both copies with us while sightseeing, and dining,” Peter Coriasco said. “Always leave passports, along with other valuables, in the hotel or room safe and carry the copies instead. If a safe is not available, leaving passport originals in a locked suitcase is

an OK alternative.” Added Anne Coriasco: “And leave your expensive jewelry at home — it attracts the wrong kind of attention.”
Pickpocket awareness/defense 1. Remove any unnecessary contents from your wallets before leaving home, including library cards, auto insurance cards, supermarket and other loyalty cards. This makes wallets thinner, easier to carry and tougher to spot. 2. Men should carry wallets in the front pockets of
asco said.
What to bring in carry-on luggage 1. Avoid carrying anything important in checked luggage. Everything of value, including medicines, electronics, cameras, luggage lock keys, travel documents and anything that cannot be replaced easily, should be carried with you. Think through what you’ll want if you get stuck in a hotel or airport without your checked bag. 2. Limit checked baggage to one person each and cross-pack a change of clothes in each other’s main suitcase. Use TSA-approved locks. “We buy sets of locks, all of which share the same key, and each of us has one of those keys in our carry-on,” Peter Coriasco said. 3. Putting similar items, such as underwear, shirts and accessories, in small plastic bags or packing cubes helps keep them organized in your suitcase.
Driving and walking in unfamiliar places “It’s difficult to use Google Maps without WiFi or turning on phones that may incur high data charges,” Peter said. “We use maps.me, an app that is available for iOS or Android phones. Before leaving home, or a location that has WiFi, download maps for the locations to be visited. Maps.me works without connectivity and provides the basic features of Google Maps or a GPS loaded with expensive foreign maps. It can be used while driving or walking.”
Communicating using a smartphone abroad
Anne and Peter Coriasco have visited Hvar, a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, a popular summer resort.
“ T r a v e l i n g i s g r e at. . . . We find most people are f r i e n d ly, h e l p f u l a n d a d e l i g h t. Also it’s good to carry your purse on the body opposite of the street to avoid thieves on bikes or scooters. In crowds, backpacks should be carried on the front of the body. Be especially aware in crowded cities and tourist areas. Many times a decoy may distract a targeted traveler by asking for help or by trying to sell you something while a second person — sometimes it’s even a child — will sneak items from your pocket or bag. “Be aware who is around; you’ll notice the thieves looking at the crowd instead of the sites,” Peter Cori-

Turn on Airplane Mode and turn off Cellular Data when leaving the country. When needing to check on a reservation or other local issue, turn Airplane Mode off while leaving Cellular Data off and make the call. Prearrange with provider for packages that allow the use of minutes and data from home plan while abroad.
Avoid getting sick Wash your hands often! Ask a local (a hotel desk clerk, a guide or other trusted person) if tap water is safe to drink. If unsure, buy water for all drinking and brushing teeth. Also check with local guides (or on the internet) about the safety of food sold by street vendors. Europe is usually OK; play it safe in other places. If in doubt, eat in recommended restaurants and not from street vendors. “Traveling is great. You meet so many wonderful people, learn about many different cultures and see so much beauty,” Anne Coriasco said. “We find most people are friendly, helpful and a delight. Preparation, awareness and common sense help avoid safety problems while traveling. We try to learn some of the local language when possible. Even though one can normally always find someone that speaks English, those who try to use the local language are appreciated.”

Dock Tale Hour
O
f all the months of the year, March here at the lake can be the bleakest. Smackdab in the throes of dreary ol’ winter, with no holidays to break up the doldrums, March’s cold winds and dreary gray skies deter most of us from venturing out onto our docks and waterways. Fear not, this third month of the year also brings a great distraction that has become a treasured national obsession: March Madness. What is March Madness? It’s the 64-team (well 68, but let’s stick to the basics at the moment) NCAA Division 1 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, designed to crown our national basketball champions. Research suggests that the use of “March Madness” as the tournaments’ descriptor was first uttered in 1982 by sportscaster Brent Musburger. However, fun fact No. 1: the Illinois High School Boys Basketball Championship had been using the term March Madness since 1939. A 1996 dispute resulted in the creation of a dual-use trademark. How’s that for compromise — Washington, D.C., I’m looking at you. Tournament teams are divided into four regions of 16 teams each. Teams are ranked one through 16 in each region and are initially slated to compete as follows: 1 plays 16; 2 plays 15; 3 plays 14; 4 plays 13; 5 plays 12; 6 plays 11; 7 plays 10; and 8 plays 9. Winners proceed through the tournament brackets until the winners of each of the four regions square off in what’s known as the Final Four. Fun fact No. 2: until 2018, a No. 16 team had never defeated a No. 1 team. However, last year 16th-ranked University of Maryland-Baltimore County pulled off a bracket-busting upset by beating topranked University of Virginia in the first round of the men’s tournament. Truth be told, and as many of you know, I’m a football girl. Every fall I live and die by each weekend’s gridiron slugfests. Basketball ain’t exactly my jam. That is, until March Madness, when I board the madness train and pick my NCAA tournament darlings.
Illustration Shawn Garrett
By Kimberly Dalferes
Fun fact No. 3: no one has ever correctly picked every tournament game winner, according to a March 2018 report on CNN. Jeff Bergen, a professor at DePaul University, calculated the odds of filling out a perfect full tournament bracket to be 1 in 128 billion. Many will expend significant brainpower this month choosing their tournament faves. I do admire your dedication and relentless analysis of all things b-ball. For others ready to jump into the fun, but are puzzled or overwhelmed by those daunting bracket selections, here are a few suggestions: • Choose by your favorite color. For example, if you adore all shades of green, take a look at the teams whose jerseys feature hues of emerald, Kelly and forest. These could be your peeps.
• Pick by team mascot. Follow the lead of USA Today, which for the past three years has developed tournament rankings based on the tenacity of the team mascots. For this method, consider that mustangs are faster than turtles, eagles are tougher than cardinals and spiders scare just about everyone. • Select in alphabetical order. Determine your winners by choosing in alphabetical order. Accordingly, Alabama beats Auburn, but Auburn beats Baylor. However you so choose your champions, I wish everyone good luck and good fun in all your madness adventures. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of I Was In Love With a Short Man Once and Magic Fishing Panties. Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
