ecently, I was having dinner at an area restaurant when I struck up a conversation with the folks next to me. After introducing myself, they told me that they rely on Laker as a valuable information resource. Thank you! That’s exactly what we aspire to be. With an eye toward that goal, this magazine — our annual Home & Garden issue — presents information on contractors, plumbers, electricians, painters and more. Plus, our gardening columnist highlights the top three trends this year. If you’re hungry and looking to try an old favorite, check out our feature on Casa D’Amici at Downtown Moneta. It’s been a labor of love for lake resident Gil Smith, who wants patrons to feel like they’re having dinner in the home of friends. Finally, check out the little yellow house with the milliondollar view, which sits on a point lot where the Roanoke and Blackwater rivers converge. It’s not only well-loved, but the home has been around since before the lake reached full pond. As always, if you have story ideas or feedback, we’d love to hear from you. You’re welcome to email us anytime at editor@ smithmountainlaker.com.

Casa D’Amici, which is Italian for “House of Friends” has reopened year-round at Downtown Moneta. Page 22.

‘HOUSE of FRIENDS’ Casa D’Amici‘s decor and menu were influenced by owner Gil Smith’s travels around the world. But it’s the name that best expresses how he wants Lakers to feel when they eat there. Story by JERRY HALE / Photography by JEN CHACONAS, JOLLY JEN PHOTOGRAPHY

WARM AND WELCOMING

Casa D’Amici’s decor, such as the 400-bottle wine wall (opposite page), and dishes, including crab stuffed onion rings, draw inspiration from owner Gil Smith’s travels.

SHORELINES Profile

“H

ouse of friends” is the translation for Casa D’Amici, the restaurant that has reopened once again at Downtown Moneta. Owner and manager Gil Smith is determined to make dining there feel like “having dinner at the home of friends.”

Smith described the dining atmosphere as “upscale casual.” “You can comfortably wear shorts and a T-shirt even though the decor is more elegant than that,” Smith said of dining there in summertime. “Wear what you’d wear to a friend’s home.” Smith is now at the lake full time after retiring last August from a recruiting firm. “That job had me traveling all over the world — 20 different countries in 2017 alone,” he said. “In 2011, I was on the road 47 of 52 weeks.” Smith made the decision to close Casa D’Amici in 2015 after realizing that the

24

S M I T H M O U N T A I N L A K E R | March - April 2020

quality of food and service could not be maintained to his standards while he was away so much. He reopened the restaurant during the summer season in 2018 before closing it again for the winter. Now Smith is staying put and keeping the restaurant open year-round. “Since I’ve retired and can stay at the lake, I can give my undivided attention to the dining experience we offer,” he said. Indeed, Smith is actively cooking and supervising the kitchen, working with head chef Raine Spradlin and greeting diners every night that Casa D’Amici is open — Wednesdays through Saturdays

for dinner and Sunday brunch during the off-season, with Tuesday dinner added during spring and summer. For Smith, Casa D’Amici is a labor of love. He designed the space as the centerpiece of Downtown Moneta, a 62,000-square-foot center that includes 19 commercial and 20 residential units. “I was able to incorporate some design aspects I had noted in prior travels,” Smith said of the restaurant’s interior. “The waterfall, which masks kitchen noise and separates the paths for food leaving the kitchen and dirty dishes returning, I saw at Aquavit Scandinavian restaurant in New York City. The idea for the 400-bottle wine wall was borrowed from a place in Stamford, Conn., and the bar design mimics the one in the U.S. Air terminal at La Guardia.”

DINING WITH FRIENDS

The pan-seared pork chop (opposite page, top) features cheddar grits and a white wine braise with apples and onions. It can be paired with a bottle of wine selected from the 400-bottle wine wall. Gil Smith (top left) and chef Raine Spradlin are serving up housemade specialties, including grilled salmon (left) with smashed potatoes. A full-service bar offers a rainbow of specialty drinks. If you go: Casa D’Amici, 1100 Celebration Ave., Moneta. Reservations are suggested, especially for Fridays and Saturdays, but the restaurant can seat up to 145 diners. Special events and offerings are posted on Facebook. For more information, visit casadamicisml. com or call 540-297-6480.

Casa D’Amici’s booths have high walls to make them cozy and private, and each has its own light level control — brighter for reading the menu and dimmer for dining atmosphere. Umbrella tables on a small front patio, as seen all over Europe, accommodate al fresco diners when the weather cooperates. Smith is also responsible for the varied menu: 90% of the items on it are his suggestions, which have been inspired by dishes he’s enjoyed during his travels. The extensive menu includes hand-cut steaks, seafood selections and nearly a dozen Italian house specialties, as well as appetizers, flatbreads and tacos. The Bolognese sauce used in the restaurant dishes is based on Smith’s mother’s recipe. “It was always my request for birthday dinners

growing up,” he said. Meal prices range from $10.99 (fettuccine Alfredo) to $32.99 (surf-and-turf with lump crab meat). There are more than 20 items under $15. “We regularly offer specials that aren’t on the menu, and we update the menu every six months, keeping the favorites and adding new items,” Smith said. “The goal is for everyone who comes to find something appealing at a price they can afford.” The crab stuffed onion ring appetizer and shrimp magnolia for dinner — jumbo shrimp stuffed with crab meat and finished with homemade garlic cream sauce — are popular menu items, Smith said. Casa D’Amici also offers a monthly wine pairing dinner. The dinners are limited to 26 participants, and diners are treated to seven courses with nine different wines. Priced at $75 per person or $140 per couple, the evening’s theme is kept secret until guests arrive, Smith said. “We have a very loyal following for these meals,” Smith said, “but that’s true of the everyday dining experience as well. We’re getting a significant number of repeat customers, many who come

once a week. People are discovering that we’re open again, and that the food quality is better than ever before. We’re paying attention to the details of making every meal like something you’d enjoy at a friend’s house — in fact, there are three private dining rooms for six to 15 that are decorated like home kitchens.”

AESTHETICS AND AMBIENCE

Casa D’Amici offers three private dining rooms (top) that feel comfortable and cozy, while a waterfall wall in the main dining room masks noise from the kitchen.

REACH NEW HEIGHTS

Growing plants upward, such as on a trellis (right), provides a nice exclamation point to what are often horizontal garden designs. Here, it softens the look of the brick and provides a welcoming arch over the front door.

W

inter’s drawing to a close, and it’s time to start thinking about changes you may want to make to your garden. Here are some ideas to try if you want to be in the vanguard of gardening trends for 2020.

Grow Up whether you grow vines on trellises, three-legged or four-legged frames, tuteurs (four-sided pyramid- or obelisklike trellises), wires stretched between screws set in a brick wall or even tomato cages, growing plants upward is in vogue. In addition to making it possible to create more lush environments by packing in plants that take up little ground space, vining plants draw the eye upward for an added dimension and provide an exclamation point in a horizontal design. Vines aren’t the only way to achieve a vertical garden. This exciting trend includes affixing flower pots onto a fence or wall using wrought iron flower pot rings or other devices, hanging baskets from trees or pot hooks, attaching closely arranged window boxes or planters to walls and fences and creating living walls (planting systems are available online). Grow a vertical vegetable garden in pots near your kitchen door or on a deck. Peas, pole beans, cucumbers, some melons and indeterminate tomato varieties are all vining crops that actually perform better when they are kept well off the ground. Support them with a trellis, twine that is anchored to the pot and an overhead beam or on cages. Fill in the bare ground at the feet of the vines with named vegetable varieties that are compact or that are known to produce prolifically so you get as much harvest as possible from one large pot. ‘Tom Thumb’ is a “midget” head lettuce; ‘Jade Cross’ Brussels sprouts yield an early, prolific

crop. As a rule the smaller the fruit, the more the plants tend to produce so look for medium- to small-fruited varieties such as cherry tomatoes.

Invest in Garden Gold in his 1929 book “The Gardener’s Year,” Czech author Karel Capek wrote, “I find a real gardener is not a man who cultivates flowers; he is a man who cultivates the

soil.” As Capek suggests, good soil is fundamental to gardening. One of the best ways to create excellent soil is to compost garden and vegetative kitchen scraps and spread the decomposed material on the garden beds. There’s nothing new about that –— except this year composting is one of the hot garden trends. Composting is the miracle drug of

High-nitrogen “greens”: • Coffee grounds and filters • Tea bags • Eggshells • Ground corncobs • Fresh leaves (except walnut) • Fruit and vegetable kitchen scraps • Lawn clippings • Pine needles • Weeds (if not gone to seed) • Disease-free plant debris • Seaweed or kelp

To get compost in a hurry you need a balance of high-nitrogen “green” material and high-carbon “brown.” The material also needs to be moist, but not soggy and aerated. Recipe for Autumn: • 3 parts dry leaves • 1 part fresh garden weeds • 1 part fresh grass clippings • 1 part food scraps Recipe for Summer: • 3 parts dry grass clippings • 3 parts fresh grass clippings

What to compost: To avoid flies, other pests and potential odor, bury kitchen scraps a few inches deep in the pile.

Combine ingredients in layers and moisten. Once a week use a garden fork to turn and aerate the material, mixing it well. You should have finished compost in a few weeks.

High-carbon “browns”: • Aged sawdust • Dry leaves (shredded will compost faster) • Shredded twigs

What not to compost: • Animal feces • Bones • Charcoal or charcoal ashes (wood ashes are excellent) • Dairy products • Diseased or pest-laden garden debris • Invasive weeds • Meat and meat products

gardening. Add it to heavy clay soil, and you make the soil lighter and improve drainage. Add it to sandy soil, and you provide needed bulk, as well as water retaining properties. Rich in micronutrients and organisms, compost feeds and builds the soil, helps balance the pH and boosts plants’ immune systems. There’s never a time when compost is inappropriate in the garden, and if you make it yourself, this valuable substance is free. Making compost is easy — unless you want to be more scientific and have your materials decompose within weeks. There are all kinds of recipes for making compost, some that are quite daunting. If you want a batch quickly, then follow one of the recipes provided to create compost in a little as two weeks. If you aren’t in a rush, you can simply pile up garden debris and kitchen waste in an out-of-the-way corner and let nature run its course. In about a year, you’ll have compost. Optimally the pile should be about 4 feet high and at least 4 feet tall and

34

wide, although it can extend as long as you like. As the material breaks down, the pile will shrink in volume by about 50 percent.

Low-Maintenance Equals Sustainability come the summer months, most Lakers want to put their time and energy into enjoying water activities with their families and guests. While other gardeners around the country may not be blessed with a lake as wonderful as ours — or any lake — a national gardening trend, which is fueled by an aging Baby Boomer population, is to make gardens easier to manage. Many people do not want to give up on having a garden; they just want to be able to manage the workload without being a slave to the landscape. They are seeking a sustainable workload. The term low-maintenance never means no-maintenance. Any garden needs some care, but there is a lot you can do to minimize the work while still having an attractive landscape. Here are

some tips: • Favor flowering shrubs over other flowers. Shrubs generally require a lot less work than perennials. • Place plants where they will get what they need without your help. For example, situate water-loving plants near the wettest sections of the garden, group shade lovers on the fringe of the woods and put sun-loving plants in exposed locations. • Group plants with similar needs together so that you do not have to tend to each individually. • Reduce your area of lawn. Weekly mowing is not considered a low-maintenance activity. In addition lawn fertilizer leaches into the lake, polluting the water. Other garden trends for 2020 include taking advantage of new technologies to grow houseplants; repurposing old items to use as containers or sculptures in the garden; adding water features such as fountains in pots; and growing your own food (even something as simple as basil for a sliced tomato salad or mint for your mojito).

Lake homeowners who want to keep their lawns green during the summer oftentimes turn to the pros for help.

ush green lawns and manicured landscaping take work, and with Mother Nature’s unpredictability, many lake homeowners turn to manmade solutions. “If you want a green lawn all summer long, you’re going to need an automatic irrigation system,” said Galen Layman of Seven Oaks Landscape - Hardscape. “Most lake lawns are simply too large to be kept wet enough by drag-the-hose handwatering.” Lake homes typically have sod installed instead of grass planted from seed. “Getting new sod established is especially water-demanding,” said Brad Austin, a Seven Oaks project manager. “Seed will wait for water to germinate; sod must be kept continuously moist for weeks beginning the day it goes down.” The story is not as clear-cut with landscape plantings, Layman said. “Most shrubs, perennials and decorative trees,

once established, can survive on the annual 45 inches of rainfall typical to our area. Getting new plantings established will require more, but that may be manageable by a resident homeowner willing to commit time to hand-watering. But if you don’t live here full time, you’ll need automatic shrub watering in July and August.”

If beds are watered automatically, the system should be designed for zoned, programmed variation of watering frequency and time. “Shrubs planted in this area’s poor-draining, clay soils can easily be drowned by the amounts of water lawn grass requires,” Layman said. “They need to be watered on a separate schedule.” Drip watering systems for beds are water-efficient, but it may not be readily apparent whether they are running properly. Should they fail, it may not be discovered until plants are withering and dying. Other considerations are sloped beds that drain excess water away downhill while level areas can be prone to oversaturation. Also, southern, western and unshaded exposures need more water than others. Yet even with lawns, over-watering often happens, said Shannon Wray, a Seven Oaks landscape designer. “Lake homeowners typically irrigate with free lake water and really like to see the system they’ve purchased soaking their grass.

JUST ADD WATER

One expert says two waterings a week is sufficient for a green lawn.

But the ‘off’ setting is your lawn’s friend. With daily high temperatures under 90 degrees, two waterings a week (totaling about 1 inch) will be sufficient.” Seven Oaks offers a full landscape maintenance service that will make sure proper watering is being delivered to each area and recommends that a system’s controls be mounted where they’re always accessible to a visiting technician. Those details typically fall to system installers such as Westlake Turf & Irrigation. George Kerr, the company’s president, said he often works closely with landscape designers to install the proper irrigating pipes and control hardware after a property has been graded and just before plants go in. “It’s important that things are done in the right order,” Kerr said. “Final grading of a construction site will affect where water needs to be delivered and can disturb previously installed underground pipes.”

“Technology now allows for wireless rain gauges to trigger system shutdowns and restarts as weather patterns change, and for homeowners to adjust watering by smartphone or tablet. Wi-Fi-enabled systems can even adapt to weather forecasts.” GEORGE KERR Westlake Turf & Irrigation

About half of the firm’s installations are for new construction; the rest are for customers who discover they can’t keep their landscape lush and healthy without help. A system’s design should be for the long

term, Kerr said, since watering needs will increase as plants mature. “Designers should envision watering needs 10 years out and allow for water delivery to be reprogrammed over time.” According to Kerr, the cost for irrigating a typical ¾-acre lot starts at about $10,000, but will vary based on slope, exposure, complexity and technology chosen. “Multiple watering zones will help adjust delivery to grass with different sun exposures and to beds versus lawn areas,” he said. “Technology now allows for wireless rain gauges to trigger system shutdowns and restarts as weather patterns change, and for homeowners to adjust watering by smartphone or tablet. Wi-Fi-enabled systems can even adapt to weather forecasts, but in our area the closest station may be an hour away, and rainfall sometimes varies significantly from one part of the lake to another.” The pump’s location is another system design consideration. Pumps work best

at the 800-foot level, but the shoreline management plan’s size restrictions on enclosures discourage taking up boathouse space for pumps and pipes, Kerr said. Pump wiring must follow local electrical codes, which specify ground-fault protection. There’s no chance of electric current leakage harming swimmers since only non-conductive water piping is used for plumbing that reaches the water. Most irrigation systems also require winterization. “There are always low areas in the pipes and pumps that must be blown clear with compressed air,” Kerr said. “Pumps that are on-shore will freeze up before those that are over the water or protected in a dock house or attic.” Both landscaper and irrigation system installers emphasize one key point: while automatic watering may be essential to attractive landscaping, using it sparingly is essential as well. Over-watering destroys far more landscaping than under-watering.

GETTING IT JUST RIGHT

Landscapers and irrigation system experts say that automatic watering is good for keeping lawns and shrubs green, but over-watering is far more detrimental to a yard than underwatering.

SHORELINES Lake Homes

The liTTle yellow house that sits along the edge of the lake overlooking smith Mountain, where both the Blackwater and Roanoke rivers converge, is a relic of a bygone era. Today’s shoreline management plan would never allow a home to be placed so close to the water. But the Bernard house, built in 1965, just before the lake reached full pond, predates those rules. The structure originally began as a boathouse. Midway through its construction, Florine Bernard suggested to her husband, John, that the builder should put a cabin above it. Long before that, the property was once part of a 1,200-acre cattle, corn, hay and tobacco farm — much of which now lies under water. It was established in the 1800s then bought by the Bernards from the Saunders family at auction in 1950. The couple sold a large portion to Appalachian Power to be flooded for the lake and more than 70 acres to developer Dave Wilson for what would become Bernard’s Landing. The couple retained the 10-acre point lot upon which their house was built, as well as a section that is still leased to the Virginia Inland Sailing Association for

its clubhouse and marina. There also were several building lots on Tranquility Lane, which have since been sold. Although John died 32 years ago, his widow, Florine, died earlier this year at age 94. These days, the house and property are shared by the families of the couple’s three children: Ann Coffey, Flo Lena Harris and John Bernard III, as well as their six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The house is small by today’s standards — just two bedrooms and a single bath above the original boathouse and a kitchen/living area that runs the length of the structure. The expansive view of the junction of the Roanoke and Blackwater rivers, with the whole of Smith Mountain beyond, is from the generous all-weather porch where two dining tables make it the best place to gather when families are enjoying time at the lake. While the boathouse underneath goes unused, a two-slip dock with sundeck built in the nearby cove is often the go-to spot for family members. Ann Coffey remembers summers in the 1950s and early ’60s at the farm with her parents living in a trailer. Her dad, who retained a love of horses from his days serving in the U.S. Cavalry, kept the tradition alive — there were eight horses plus a riding ring on the property. A 10-foot by 12-foot concrete pad, just a few feet from the boathouse seawall, still marks where an early 1970s tornado swept the storage shed and six saddles into the lake while leaving the nearby house unharmed. Coffey also remembers water skiing when the lake was still filling up. “We’d ski the narrow channel between the trees, headed down toward the dam,” she recalled. “Once I decided to try dropping a ski, unannounced. I fell, but no one was paying attention. I remember floating for a long time toward the trees until the boat finally circled back. And, of course, there were no other boats out on the lake to notice.” Coffey’s daughter, Victoria Moore, recalls learning to ski when she was 4 years old. She often had cousins Kristin Plunkett and Suzanne Parker to ski with, and skiing three at the same time was always a treat. The girls also liked to play tricks on Moore’s little brother, Jonathan. “Back then, when trees were still stick-

ing out of the lake, none of us could imagine how special the view would ultimately become,” Coffey said. While Victoria Moore and husband Tommy work full time — she at Rocky Mount Health and Rehab and he at Central Virginia Manufacturing (he also runs SML Wicked Striper guide service and is a captain for Sea Tow – SML) — they look forward to spending time at the lake house during the summer months with their children, Thomas Bruce and Sommar. “This little house isn’t fancy, but it holds lots of memories for our family,” Moore said. “Tommy and I look forward to making our own family memories here.”

SHORELINES Lake History

A

s 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of Prohibition, Franklin County, which earned the nickname “Moonshine Capital of the World,” is poised to celebrate Moonshine Heritage Month with activities planned throughout April. Organizers are quick to point out that the celebration is more than just about making illegal liquor. “Franklin County is a testament that there’s more to moonshine than meets the eye,” said Christine Arena, programming coordinator of the Franklin County Public Library in Rocky Mount. “It’s about the history of living a hard life and trying to beat the odds in impoverished, rural communities. It’s about the survival of families and farms. It’s about mountain life, our geography and landscape and mountain music.” The library is planning three free events starting April 3, including a screening of the movie “Lawless,” a lecture and concert titled “Goodbye Booze,” as well as a monthlong exhibit featuring original paintings inspired by the era titled “Moonshine the Arts: Reflections on Canvas.” Crazy Horse Marina in Scruggs will host a Moonshine Heritage Festival on April 18 from noon to 5 p.m. The festival will focus on comparing life in 1920 to 2020. It will include old-time cars, vendors, distillers, bluegrass bands and more as part of the celebration. “It’s about the heritage and respecting those who came before us not just the alcohol,” Bechtler said. “It’s about the people.” The Franklin County Historical Society is hosting a Moonshine Jar Hunt starting April 1. Participants (must be 21 or older) can pick up a moonshine passport at the museum and hunt for the jars pictured on the passports at businesses throughout the county. After getting their passports stamped at each location, they can be returned to the museum by month’s end for a chance to win prizes. Linda Stanley, managing director of the Franklin County Historical Society, said the organization is “delighted” about Moonshine Heritage Month, as the society has been celebrating the stories behind the making and distribution of

Moonshine Heritage Month Events The following is a list of events scheduled to date. More information is available on the Franklin County Moonshine Heritage Facebook page. • April 1-28: Moonshine Passport Program, Franklin County Historical Society • April 3: Moonshine Mixology at Twin Creeks Distillery’s tasting room in Rocky Mount • April 4-25: “Moonshining the Arts: Reflections on Canvas” will be held at Franklin County Public Library’s main branch in Rocky Mount. Original paintings inspired by the Prohibition era and Franklin County’s place in the history and heritage of moonshining. • April 4: “Lawless,” Westlake Cinema

• April 10, 6 to 10 p.m.: A Night of Makin’ Likker at The Early Inn with Twin Creeks Distillery • April 11, 8 a.m.: Chug for the Jug 5K (start at Franklin County High School, Perdue Lane) • April 11, 8 p.m.: Ralph Stanley II and the Clinch Mountain Boys, Harvester • April 18, noon to 5 p.m.: Moonshine Heritage Festival, Crazy Horse Marina • April 18-19, 9 a.m. start (both days): Moonshine Jug Shoot at Summit Springs Shooting Center in Ferrum • April 23, 6:30 p.m.: “Goodbye Booze” concert and lecture at the Franklin County Public Library’s main branch in Rocky Mount. Historian and musician Gregg D. Kimball will trace the musical legacy of the Prohibition movement through spoken narrative, period images and live and recorded music. • April 25, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Moonshine Car show at the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum in Ferrum

• April 4: Cruisin’ Rocky Mount

moonshine for many years. “This historical society is in the 16th consecutive year of interpreting this with our annual Moonshine Express event, and we are so glad to see others with a desire to keep our mountain culture alive for future generations,” Stanley said. “The story is so much larger than breaking the law and

consuming alcohol.” To illustrate that point, an extensive online exhibit has been produced by the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum at Ferrum College, with funding and support from John Redd Smith Jr. of Martinsville and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.

“Over the years hundreds of travel articles and books have been written about the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia,” the exhibit stated. “Not surprisingly, the public’s understanding of moonshining is more myth than fact, and few people grasp the scope of the Blue Ridge moonshining industry over the last 150 years.” Using photographs and a detailed narrative, the exhibit, posted to the BRI’s website, walks viewers through the history of moonshining and how the illegal industry came about. “The difference between a legal distiller and a moonshiner is basic: The moonshiner chooses not to license his distilling operation or pay taxes on his whiskey,” according to the exhibit. Stanley said the local moonshine industry plays a large part in the interpretation and presentation of local history — not for the lawlessness exhibited by those involved in it, but because it figures into the lives of virtually every county citizen, in one way or another. “Everyone didn’t make it, haul it, sell it or even drink it back in the day; however, the local economy and everyday life was affected by it,’’ Stanley said. “We interpret the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ in an effort to give a full picture. We believe our county’s moonshine heritage provides a sense of community and home even for those not born and raised here.” Briana Barker of The Franklin News-Post contributed to this story.

Dock Tale Hour

I

n early spring of 2009, one of those nasty mega wind storms barreled through Virginia. The kind of experience that reminds you: when Mother Nature chooses to do so, she will quickly dismantle years of yard grooming and gardening. In the aftermath, the cacophony of chainsaws and leaf blowers rang out across the neighborhood as we cleared downed trees and lawns strewn with branches, leaves, and the occasional birdfeeder or plastic lawn chair someone had forgotten to retrieve before the winds blew through. At our house, the storm dislodged several dead limbs from two tall pines we had been meaning to trim or take down for years. One large limb fell precariously close to the Hubs’ cherished sports car, taking out the side mirror and depositing a rather sizeable dent in the right passenger door. It’s never easy to see a grown man cry, the words “My baby!” escaping from his trembling lips. Whereas he saw despair and ruin, I realized a golden opportunity: removal of the trees would finally give way to my dreams of a sun garden. Our lovely, heavily treed yard had frustrated me for years. Though I had cultivated lush, green hostas and other shade loving perennials, I longed to grow masses of colorful flowers that required direct sunlight and warm earth. Mother Nature had finally opened a path for me. We worked over several weekends to transform that little spit of now sundrenched property into a glorious refuge of gardening bliss. The first year was little more than setting the stage as we tilled the ground and incorporated richly composted, dark brown topsoil into the clay-like dirt for which Virginia is famous. I was reminded often of a gardening adage my beloved grandmother taught me, “First they sleep, then they creep, then they leap.” Irises, peonies, black-eyed Susans and purple coneflowers would eventually take strong root and rise up each spring and summer in this little happy corner of our yard. Each spring when the irises awake and shoot up their strong, yet slim, green

stalks, I wait patiently and watch as the tips turn dark and eventually greet me with bursts of lovely, deep purple flowers with golden yellow throats. The peonies will follow, starting as tight spheres that will open to plate-size poofs; white, pink and deep rose-colored frills upon frills of spectacular petals. It so happened that 2009 was also the year my son would graduate from high school. The sun garden became symbolic of all that had gone into the care and raising of my most treasured gift. It was not lost on me that our children are very much like our gardens: some are wild and untamed, some more sensitive to their surroundings, all in constant need of support and attention in order to thrive and “leap.” Our children and our gardens are never finished, we will always happily tend to each no matter how mature they become. Both my son and my sun garden are currently blossoming, happy in their sunlit spaces. For this, I am indeed a happy gardener.
