Editor’s Note
L
ife at the lake — or anywhere — has been anything but normal lately. If you had told me six months ago that our lives would be upended by a global pandemic, I likely would have thought you’d been out in the sun too long. At the moment, lake businesses, which normally would be gearing up for what’s typically a busy summer season, are in a holding pattern due to Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s stay-at-home order to curb the spread of the COVID-19. Since you’re seeing the pandemic played out in the media everywhere, we wanted to bring you a coronavirus-free Laker magazine. In this issue, you’ll find all your favorite features, including the latest dispatch from Catriona Tudor Erler, our longtime gardening columnist, as well as a sneak peek at the Howlett home, one of eight homes featured on this fall’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, now in its 30th year! We’ll also take to the water to learn about one of the fastestgrowing watersports out there: wakesurfing and get some tips and tricks from the experts. Finally, we explore the world of joint replacement, including offering information about what to expect should you need one, plus helpful ideas from others on getting through it. From all of us at Laker magazine, have a safe, prosperous summer!
We take a sneak peek at the Howlett home, which will be on this year’s Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. Page 28.

Bonnie and Keith Whitenight transform their lakeside outdoor living spaces into a floral paradise. The decks off their house are adorned with a bounty of planters attached to the railing, and mosslined baskets hanging from hooks on hanger plant stands or from the eaves. These are brimming with ever-blooming choices such as Begonia sempervirens, trailing geraniums and impatiens. Hostas add a diverse foliage interest. Although impatiens have been banished from most gardens due to the downy mildew scourge that rampaged through the country, the Whitenights find the plants don’t succumb to the disease when grown in containers. Anyone going up or down the stairs to the dock also is treated to the experience of walking through an avenue of foliage and blooms growing in planters on the landing rails. The hostas are free from slug and deer damage because they are high above the ground. The red flowers of the begonias and impatiens add further lively interest. There are planters on the dock (last year the Whitenights tried a red-flowering canna lily, which gave a tropical flair to the space), but it is on the deck

Flowers That Can Handle a Hot Dock F U L L S U N B AT H E R S
‘Polka Dot’ Vinca • This heat- and humidity-
loving vinca thrives on a sunny dock. Bred to be disease-resistant, they are also drought-tolerant and will forgive you if you forget to water for a few days. The upright, robust plants grow 10 inches to 12 inches tall and wide with glossy foliage. Their large, white blooms are accented with a bright, pink eye that darkens to red in the center. These showy flowers will continue blooming nonstop from early summer until frost. To add to all those positive characteristics, they don’t need deadheading.
Mandevillea/Dipladenia • These tropical
vining plants produce a prolific, nonstop display of large, trumpet-shaped blooms. The flowers come in a variety of colors, including white, pink and red. In frost-free climates where they can grow outside yearround, the vine can reach up to 20 feet tall, but at Smith Mountain Lake where we grow it as an annual, it more likely will reach 5 feet by the end of summer. A member of the mandevilla family, dipladenia is a bushier plant than mandevilla with stems that hang down. For a full patio container or hanging basket that will bloom all summer, opt for dipladenia. Grow either plant in full sun and keep the soil moist, but not wet.
Pelargonium peltatum • Commonly known as
ivy leaf, trailing or cascading geranium, the plants can spread up to 6 feet and bloom all summer in cascades of vibrant color. You can choose from traditional “ivies,” which have large double- or semi-double flowers with thick, fleshy leaves; cascade or balcony types, which have numerous single flowers with small green or variegated leaves; mini and true dwarf forms that have a tighter, more compact growth habit than the standard; and ivy-zonal hybrids that have the combined flowers and leaves of zonal varieties with the vining habit of the ivies.
S ha d e s i tters
Hostas • A drought-tolerant shade plant (that also thrives in moist areas), hostas come in a wide variety of foliage colors and sizes from dwarf varieties with evocative names such as Blue Mouse Ears, Frosted Mouse Ears, Mighty Mouse, Dixie Chickadee and Baby Bunting to giant specimens, including Sum and Substance and Birchwood Elegance. Those with yellow foliage are more sun-tolerant than blue or green varieties. Variegated hosta with white or yellow highlights can light up a dark garden corner. 22

A red flowering mandevilla vine climbs up a trellis, screening the view of the neighbor’s dock, while Titan™ Polka Dot Vinca provides a horizontal counterpoint.
Wax begonias • A compact, bushy, mounded plant, wax begonias earn their common name because of their fleshy stems with waxy dark green to bronze leaves. They produce loose clusters (cymes) of single or double flowers in shades of white, pink or red plus mixtures of those colors. Flowers reliably bloom throughout the growing season (May to October). Dwarf varieties grow to 6 inches to 8 inches tall and taller varieties grow to 10 inches to 12 inches tall. Angel and Dragon Wing begonias • These begonias earn their names because of their large, wing-like foliage. The only difference between these two is the colors of the leaves; angels typically are striated with spots or frosted patterns, and the underside often is a striking maroon color. Dragon foliage is an unbroken, glossy deep green. Both the angel and dragon wing types grow about 2 feet tall and produce clusters of flowers in shades of white, pink, orange and red. They thrive with plenty of water and warm temperatures in partial to full shade. If grown outdoors, they will flower nonstop during summer and fall. Bring them indoors before the first frost and give them enough light and they’ll bloom yearlong. Both wax and wing begonias propagate easily. Put a cut stem in a glass of water and wait a few weeks for roots to grow.
above their dock where they have created a veritable floral bower. Here in the sun-intensive spot they opt for droughttolerant, sun-worshiping plants. A white mandevilla spills a cascade of trumpetshaped blossoms over the edge of one corner; red flowering mandevilla climbs up a trellis, creating a sense of privacy from the nearby dock. A long, narrow planter lines the railing along one side. It brims with Polka Dot vinca, a whiteflowering charmer with a saucy pink “eye.” Trailing petunias add more color in other containers, and sun-loving tomatoes grow up a wire support in another pot. The space is a joy to be in, and passing boaters enjoy the floral display that’s visible from the water.
Care and Feeding and planters do require care. The biggest job is in spring when the Whitenights replenish all their pots, All these pots
emptying last year’s planting mix onto the garden beds and refilling the containers with fresh mix. “It’s a big project,” Bonnie said with a hint of understatement. “Keith and I work on it together.” They choose a potting mix that has time-release fertilizer, giving the plants a good start when they’re first transplanted. The slow-release fertilizer lasts about a month. After that, they fertilize weekly with liquid Miracle-Gro, which they apply with a hose sprayer using premeasured doses. To make the ongoing maintenance easy on the dock and upper deck, they keep fertilizer and pest remedy supplies in one of the planter boxes. A hose delivers water directly from the lake to make watering easy. Deadheading is a well-recognized technique for keeping plants groomed and encouraging ongoing flowering. The Whitenights find that the begonias and mandevillas benefit from deadheading. The petunias and vinca take care of
themselves. Learning to garden is a lifelong endeavor, and there is always some trial and error to find the best plants for the situation. The canna lilies the Whitenights grew on the dock last year were a new project. “The flowers kept falling off, and when we’d cut the top of the plant off, it would sprout from there and spread.” When it did flower successfully, they loved the bold, orangey-red color, and the plant’s height, which screened the dock from passing boats. The hardest lesson they learned was the need to wedge the canna lily pots in place with stones or another heavy object. With the canna lilies reaching about 4 feet high, the pots were top heavy, and two of the three were blown into the lake.

Gardening with the growing mix, you can run the line through the drainage hole up to the soil line so the line is less visible. The length of time and frequency you should run the drip will depend on the size of your pot and the water requirements of the plants.
No Strangers to the Lake first came to the lake 20 years ago in 1999. They lived in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where Bonnie began her career teaching kindergarten and later provided reading academic support for other teachers. Keith managed an engineering consulting firm that specialized in providing impact studies for bridge and road projects. Avid fishermen, Keith and his brother, Vic, belonged to Larry’s Creek Fish and Game Club on the 22.9-mile-long tributary of the West Branch Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. The two families always wanted to retire on a lake, but hadn’t decided where. A neighbor mentioned Smith Mountain Lake, and they all came down to investigate. The weekend of their first visit, Vic and his wife, Linda, found a lot on North Dam Road and decided to build a house there. “We knew we weren’t going to build,” Bonnie said. “We kept looking for a house that would be near Vic by both land and water.” It took them until 2002 to find a fixer upper that they felt was a good starting point for their ultimate dream retirement home. Keith and Bonnie moved permanently to the lake in May 2015, and began major remodeling projects to enlarge the home and modernize the kitchen. There was a lot of upheaval for some time, but now the house is roomy and comfortable, somewhere both Keith and Bonnie love to be.

must be more frequent, can be a chore. Many people, including the Whitenights, mix polymer crystals (also known as hydrogels) into their posting mix (or they buy a mix that includes the crystals). These crystals, about the size of coarse salt grains, are touted as being able to absorb and hold up to 600 times their weight in water and then return it to the soil when it goes dry. It sounds great, but surprisingly, studies have found that it makes little to no difference for reducing the frequency you need to water. A professor at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Jeff Gillman tested five brands of hydrogels and explained his findings in his 2008 book, “The Truth About Garden Remedies: What Works, What Doesn’t.” He wrote, “In most cases, hydrogels just don’t work very well. While these products have shown themselves somewhat useful in some tests, they haven’t proven themselves on a consistent basis, and when they have reduced watering frequency, they haven’t The Whitenight’s deck off the house (above reduced it by much.” left) is furnished like a A more surefire way to living room with outdoor keep your pots watered wicker furniture and an without your constant area rug. wanted some elbow room,” said Chuck Howlett when he and his wife, Linda, were looking for a property at the lake. He got it with 5 wooded acres perched along the Blackwater River in Union Hall, with nary a neighbor in sight. While the Howletts have their share of woodsy decor throughout the home, they are worldly by any standard. They met at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and have had duty stations working for the U.S. government in Europe, the Middle East and Australia, so their home has an assortment of items from their years overseas. “Since we had to relocate every 2 to 4 years because of work, we dreamed of finally settling in a log home in the mountains or on a lake,” Linda said.
The kitchen features a stone-fronted peninsula (above). The front of the home includes a wide porch and a breezeway to the garage. Inside, an informal dining area (below) leads to a back deck.
At Smith Mountain Lake, they got both. In addition to hunting and fishing that Chuck and their two grown sons enjoy, his new hobby is beekeeping. Their hives are at the edge of the front yard’s tree line. The home’s primary construction is of D-shaped white pine logs, and there’s wood everywhere — on the walls, doors and ceilings. “There’s not a bit of drywall in this house,” Chuck said. The floors are engineered hardwood, which looks like wood but is made to resist scratch marks of their German shepherd, Oakley. The front porch, which also wraps around the side to provide a covered breezeway between the house and the detached garage, invites visitors to come sit a spell and enjoy the peace and quiet of the surrounding woods. Entering the home, one notices the openness of the living area with the kitchen, dining areas and living room all flowing together and brightly lit by 30

The kitchen’s stone-fronted peninsula is a unique accent, and tobacco-colored cabinets provide a nice contrast to the pine walls. Prominently displayed in the living room are two mounted bucks, along with a wood duck, that Chuck shot. Continuing the rustic theme, the nearby powder room has a mirror decorated with bears. On the living room sofa, an animal hide is revealed by its long, wide tail to be a kangaroo. HOLE LOT OF FUN A friendly game of cornhole can be serious fun — just ask Lake residents who compete in national tournaments. Story and Photography by jerry HALE
M
ost L akers likely have come across cornhole, a game that involves tossing 6-inch square beanbags at a pair of slanted wooden boards, often homemade and decorated with painted schemes and decals. The name likely evolved from the combination of dried corn as a bag-filler option and the 6-inch diameter hole in each board — a 3-point scoring target akin to a ringer in horseshoes. Bags that rest on the board at the end of each round of play — called a frame — score one point each. Cornhole has roots in an 1883 patent for “Parlor Quoits,” which involved bean-filled bags tossed at slanted boards and intended as indoor horseshoes. Rights were later acquired by a Massachusetts toy manufacturer that marketed “Faba Baga,” which used target boards with several different sized holes and different point values. A September, 1974 Popular Mechanics article detailed a game called “Bean-bag Bull’s-eye” in which each player threw two bags in succession at boards somewhat shorter than those used today. Modern cornhole players alternate throwing four bags per inning or frame of play.

“There’s some place [near the Lake] to toss bags with other cornholers nearly every night of the week. Now we can really focus on being retired — and cornhole.” JACK STEVENS
The American Cornhole Organization, established in 2005 and headquartered in Milford, Ohio, claims on its website to be “the governing body for the sport of cornhole.” The American Cornhole League was founded more recently, in 2015, “to promote the sport on every level,” and offers software and apps to manage leagues, tournaments, special events and player development. Lake residents and cornhole aficionados Jack and Paula Stevens compete in area (termed regional) and countrywide ACO tournaments, as well as informal player gatherings that keep
their skills sharp. “There’s some place to toss bags with other cornholers nearly every night of the week,” Jack said. After moving back to Virginia from Houston in 2004, the couple, who retired from Hewlett Packard, had operated Lakeside Embroidery before closing the business a couple of years ago. “Now we can really focus on being retired — and cornhole,” Jack said. While Jack, now 73, has been throwing seriously for more than seven years, Paula caught the bag bug about four years ago when her backyard-honed
technique began consistently winning matches at Friday night gatherings. She earned ACO’s “pro” designation two seasons ago. Again this season, she ranks among America’s top 80 players. Now ranked No. 37, she’s the only female in ACO’s top 40. Rankings are based on matches won at sanctioned, officiated events, Jack said. “Paula is really consistent,” he said. “It’s not unusual for her to throw fourbaggers [all four bags of a frame in the 3-point hole] back to back to back.” But competition is stiff. “If you’re not getting at least three of four through that hole most frames, you’re not really a factor in sanctioned competition,” Jack said. Nonetheless, people of all abilities can enjoy the game. “Local events typically include blinddraw doubles and newbies improve by being teamed up with better players,”

Cornhole boards (like Tony Robertson’s, right) can range from $250 to $400 depending on what type of customization is needed. Proquality bags filled with resin pellets also can be customized. Top right: Jack Stevens has his gameface on during a tournament.

Paula said. “Cornhole is a family game that kids to seniors can enjoy. There are some 12-year-olds around here who can thrash adults several times their age.” ACO promotes a family-friendly atmosphere at its tournaments, too. Last season’s world competition in Las Vegas (where Paula received women’s player of the season and women’s world champion recognitions) lasted five days, with many competitors bringing family members to watch and play. “There were 40 sets of boards nearly fully occupied for 12 or 13 hours each day,” Jack said. “Everyone there gets to toss a lot of bags.” Jack, an ACO-certified official, helps organize regional tournaments, including one recently at the Bedford Moose Lodge that attracted 22 single entrants and 14 doubles teams. A major event at The Greenbrier in February 2019 saw more than 150 competitors from nine surrounding states
competing in six divisions. Many recreational cornhole players play on homemade sets, typically made from plans found on the internet. Professionally-made tournament boards are 24 inches wide and 48 inches long, with hefty 5/8-inch or ¾-inch plywood faces, braced so there is no bounce when bags land. Boards are placed exactly 27 feet from front to front, with the holes 33 feet apart. Official bags weigh precisely 1 pound, have a smooth and a sticky side resulting from carefully-chosen fabrics, and are filled with resin pellets (not dried corn or beans), so there is no degradation or moisture absorption to change their weight or sliding/sticking behavior over time. “Today there are approximately 40 manufacturers of pro-quality bags, who sell them for about $40 per set of four,” Jack said. “A pair of quality boards runs $250 to
$400, depending on how fancy or customized the graphics are.” “Airmail” is the official term for thrown bags that swish through the hole rather than sliding or bouncing into it. Throwing an airmail is useful when an opponent’s bag is a blocker lying in front of the 3-point hole destination. Any bag that is touching or has touched the floor or grass on which the boards rest is ruled “dirty” and scores no points, even if it has bounced onto the board’s surface. Tournament games end when one player or team has amassed 21 or more points. In each frame, opponents often cancel out each other’s points leading to a wash (no points added to either score) until the next frame. Games can easily last 15 to 20 minutes. “The more you practice, the better you get,” Paula said. “I’m willing to throw any time, any place, with players of any ability.”

Smith Mountain Lake is home to many retirees who have led sporting lifestyles in their younger years and hope to continue enjoying physically active lives well into their golden years. ¶ Aging bodies, however, can frustrate that intent as hobbles, limps, aches, pains and other post-exertion symptoms get harder to ignore. Get a group of retirees together and there’s a good chance the chatter will touch on joint replacement surgery — the need for it, the fact that it is scheduled for someone they know or how recovery from a recent joint repair is progressing.

Fit & Healthy Joint replacements are in demand. According to Dr. Stephen Cromer of Carilion Clinic Orthopaedics, Medicare is predicting a five-fold increase in knee replacements over the next five years likely due to an aging population eager to stay active, insurance eligibility and evolving surgical techniques to help improve outcomes. “Sporting lifestyles, along with genetic arthritis, are a recipe for joint stiffness and pain later in life,” said Dr. Joseph Moskal, who’s been operating on knees for more than 35 years and leads Carilion’s orthopaedics team of nine surgeons who replace about 2,000 knees, hips and shoulders annually. “Fortunately, joint replacement technology and techniques have improved considerably over the years,” Moskal said. “Today’s patient satisfaction rates are very high.” A s parish nurse at Resurrection Catholic Church and Trinity Ecumenical Parish since 2007, Tami Akin has followed Lakers through their procedures and recovery. Akin said she’s heard of folks having complications such as build-up of scar tissue at the surgery site, which can produce lingering discomfort. Sometimes infections occur as well. Overall though, patient reviews have been mostly positive. “Again and again, I hear people say, ‘The surgery changed my life — I should have done it sooner!,’ ” Akin said. After his knee surgery, Herbert Cosby of the Waverly community was walking with just a cane. His surgery was what’s called a partial that included a new surface for only one side of the knee joint. Partials, which Moskal said account for about 5% of knee repair surgeries, require considerably “less disturbance of surrounding tissue and honing of bone surfaces ... and a smaller incision to access the joint than do total knee replacements.” Karen DeBord and her sister, Sherry Brown, both have had shoulders replaced during the past year. DeBord attributed her shoulder pain to years of directing choral and marching band performances. Then there was later-in-life racquetball and helping build a bed and breakfast near Smith Mountain Lake Airport in 2006. When she realized she’d begun using her left arm — which had a minor repair 10 years back — to support the right while putting away dishes, she knew it was time to seek help. An injection was prescribed, but seemed to make things worse. Dr. John Barnard Jr. of OrthoVirginia in Lynchburg ultimately did DeBord’s replacement. About 16 weeks into her recovery, DeBord was at 95% of full functionality and was beginning to swat racquetballs again. “Pay attention to what the doctors and physical

therapy people tell you — that’s the key to getting back to full range of motion,” DeBord said. Brown, who lives in Winding Waters, blames genetic arthritis for her shoulder discomfort. “I’d already had a knee replaced; my brothers have a new hip and two new knees between them, and then came Karen’s shoulder,” she said. Several years ago, while still living in Florida, Brown began having three cortisone shots in each shoulder every few months. “Then the right one quit responding, and my painting, piano playing and even light housework got difficult,” she said. “It was time.” After she consulted with Carilion Clinic Orthopaedics, Dr. Benjamin Coobs performed Brown’s shoulder replacement surgery last December. And Brown said she is pleased with the results. “Recovery pain has been minimal, really phenomenal. Wearing the sling 24/7 is inconvenient, but that ends soon enough. Surgery was the right choice,” she said. Worn-out hips also can be common joint issues. Susan Gring of Waverly was doing fine on hers even through a hike of Crater Lake in Oregon in October, 2018. The pain hit just after she got home. While wearing a sling after her shoulder replacement surgery was inconvenient, Sherry Brown said surgery was the right choice for her.

“Suddenly I couldn’t walk,” she said. A cortisone shot didn’t help in the least, and then she had to wait three months between the shot and surgery. “That was agony,” Gring said. “Being unable to walk made the preparatory doctor visits, ‘Joint Academy’ patient information class [offered and required by most area surgeons] and other get-ready tasks really hard to manage.” Coobs performed Gring’s anterior right hip replacement about a year ago, and Gring said she feels great. “I was walking a mile one week after the operation, and 2 miles a week later,” she said. “It’s been a godsend — I’m now doing everything I was before the pain set in.” Susan Sowers of Winding Waters had total knee replacement surgery last October. Ten weeks into recovery, Sowers reported that she was getting around comfortably, pleased with how her scar was healing and how she’d regained pain-free bending and extension of her knee. “The physical therapists push you to do some painful exercises, but sticking with them is how you regain joint strength and flexibility,” she said. “Still, my

stamina was greatly diminished for quite some time. Working around the house made me very tired. You have to be patient. What seems easy one day will hurt the next, but the discomfort diminishes with time.” Gale Taylor of Union Hall was having enough knee pain that she feared she wouldn’t do well on a trip to Ireland and Scotland. Cromer prescribed a temporary brace to relieve pressure on the outside of her knee, which allowed her to take her trip. “It helped, but I knew it wasn’t a lifelong solution.” Taylor’s knee was replaced last December, and within two hours of surgery, she surprised nurses

by lifting and bending her leg. In only 2½ weeks, she was walking unsupported by a cane or a walker. She had been diligent with the pre-surgery exercises prescribed by the medical group and feels that contributed to her speedy recovery. In the early recovery weeks, Gale was often awakened by knee pain. Sleeping in a recliner helped. And despite textbook healing, she remains frustrated that her stamina hasn’t fully returned. “They tell you that’s not unusual. These surgeries are major operations, and it takes the body up to a year and more to fully recover,” she said. Even the b e s t co m plia n ce with preparation and recovery recommendations can’t completely rule out complications. Les Daenzer had his left knee replaced in May, 2019. Recovery seemed on track for two weeks until a visiting nurse noticed redness and warmth around the incision. Fluid from the swollen area tested positive for staph infection, likely contracted during his hospitalization. Daenzer had to have surgery to remove the implanted knee joint, the infected area

Twiceweekly rehab sessions and exercises at home helped Daenzer regain use of his leg, and he attributed support from wife Karlyn and his church family for helping him through it all. “It was a long 10 months,” he said. Now, 40 pounds lighter than when his ordeal began, Daenzer said he’s confident the final result will be a much more usable, less painful knee than he had before the initial surgery. • Borrow a walker and pre-set legs to approx. height. A physical therapist will check it on the first visit. Take it in the car for return trip home. • Carefully follow instructions for pre-surgery cleansing, sleeping on clean sheets, preparatory medications.
AT T H E H O S P I TA L • Wash hands frequently — on arrival to room, before leaving the room, if you contaminate your hands on equipment or sneeze.
• Follow instructions of your doctor/nurse/physical therapist/aides. • It is important to move and get up out of bed as soon as possible. Do not get up without help since you are under the influence of medications and anesthesia. 52
• Cough and deep breathe every two hours to prevent pneumonia; use your incentive spirometer as instructed.

• If you feel something is not right, be an advocate for yourself or have someone advocate for you. Ask questions regarding medications, treatments, any uncertainties. H O M E F R O M T H E H O S P I TA L • Your bed linens must be freshly washed; it’s best for caregiver to do before going to hospital to bring patient home. • If you have a knee replacement the ride home
from the hospital may be more comfortable with leg elevated across the back seat. A plastic garbage bag laid on the seat will help the patient slide across into position easily.
• Make a spreadsheet to track when all meds are
taken, both pre-surgery meds that are continued and meds specific to the surgery. Keeping this straight is a challenge. An AM and PM section (and putting those meds in separate zipper bags) helps keep it straight. Show meds as rows and days of the week as columns, with boxes to check off when pills are taken. You may need several rows for the pain meds and boxes big enough to write in the times narcotics are taken. Don’t trust it to memory.
• Call your doctor, as advised (temperature greater than 101, foul purulent drainage, redness surrounding incision, excessive wound drainage, shortness of breath) • Keep a list of who drops off what food, flowers or helps in some way to facilitate writing of “Thank you!” notes. as soon as doctors will allow. While most late-in-life joint replacements will work fine for the life of the recipient, getting one replaced at an early age can risk wearing out. Allane Harris of Hickory Cove had a total knee replacement in 1999 — the result of a fall that crushed her knee cap. Nineteen years later, the pain returned, and Harris said she felt as if the knee might collapse, especially walking downhill. Hoping to get back to her daily Jazzercise sessions, she explored having another replacement. After being told there was some risk of losing her leg if the surgery did not go just right, Harris sought a second opinion from Dr. Thomas Brown of the University of Virginia Medical Center. “My other knee, an arthritis case, was replaced in Lynchburg six years ago, and the recovery was a breeze. I expect this one to be much tougher,” Harris said before her surgery. After the surgery, Harris deemed it a success and has since started therapy to regain flexibility and strength. can’t go it alone. A
responsible, tolerant and loving caregiver is critical to both pre-surgery preparation and post-surgery recovery. Most doctors prefer joint replacement candidates to have a live-in caregiver rather than have them stay at an in-patient rehab facility. Caregivers can help gather recovery equipment and supplies and oversee a patient’s prescribed preparatory exercises to build stabilizing tissue strength in the joint that will be replaced. Post-recovery patients typically need help with trips to the bathroom, meal preparation and to administer medications — plus ice packs to relieve swelling and pain. “You need to be really vigilant, especially for the first 24 to 48 hours at home,” said Gale Taylor’s husband, Bill. “Gale got dehydrated and passed out twice while headed to the bathroom. Fortunately, I was right there to ease her to the floor both times.” Doug Pafford helped his wife, Sharon, through two knee replacements about six months apart. “It’s pretty much a full time job, 24/7, for the first few days,” he said.

ack in the day, surfers would have to find golden shorelines and pounding ocean waves to capture the thrill of surfing. Now wave seekers don’t have to venture more than a few feet from the back of their boats for a similar experience on Smith Mountain Lake. According to Ken Hayes, owner of Smith Mountain Wake Company, wakesurfing has exploded in popularity since 2017.
Helping families like yours isn’t just our job, it’s our commitment.
G e t t i n g S ta r t e d The sport requires just five things — a boat that’s capable
of creating a wave along with a board, a life jacket, a rope and a coachable surfer-in-training. To get in front of the wave, a surfer is pulled out of the water using a short rope at a speed of about 10 mph. Because of the slower speed, wakesurfing is accessible to nearly anyone regardless of age. “It hurts more to jump off a dock than it does to fall off a surfboard,” said Hayes, who has seen surfers ranging in age from 5 to 75 years old. As the rope slowly tightens, and just before takeoff, lie back in the water, allowing the life jacket to keep you afloat while putting your feet on the board. As the boat propels forward, you will need to dig in your heels to pop the board up vertically before letting the boat bring you to your feet in front of the wave. “It hurts more Aaric Morgan, 21, has been wakesurfing to jump off a for about four years after he began working dock than it does to fall off for Hayes at Smith Mountain Wake Co. “My advice for a beginner to wakesurf- a surfboard,” said Ken Hayes, ing would be to relax — it is not a race to owner of Smith get up,” Morgan said. Josh McClure challenges the laws of physics with the advanced maneuver of surfing with his back to the wave.

of it, it has to be sufficiently larger than an ordinary boat wake. With that in mind, it’s important to stay away from shorelines, avoid small coves and not make repeated passes in the same area. “And turn your music down,” added Hayes, who has been selling wakesurf equipment in his shop since it opened in 2013. His top tip for those starting out is finding the right board. “Too often we see people trying to surf on boards that are either too small or too big leading to frustration and/or bad habits. There is no board that fits everyone,” said Hayes. In addition to finding the proper board, it’s also necessary to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
fringe benefits
might take some getting used to, it allows for realtime coaching from someone inside the boat as opposed to wakeboarding where coaching and corrections happen after falls and in between runs. Standing on the board, you can use your foot position and weight distribution to speed up, slow down, and carve up and down the wave. Starting out, the rope can remain in-hand to keep you in front of the wave. Then, after a few confidencebuilding runs, you can toss the rope aside and use just your balance to stay in the heart of the wave. Once a surfer is up, Hayes said, “Stand tall and have fun.” When he was in middle school, Josh McClure, now 27, first learned to waterski and eventually moved on to wakeboarding and wakesurfing. He’s now the northeast sales manager for Hyperlite and H.O. Sports. “Wakesurfing has quickly and consistently grown every year and is such a huge part of our industry,” McClure said. “Learning to wakesurf is all about technique and requires very little strength. It is worth taking a lesson to get the basics of getting up and staying in the wave.”
Rules and Best Pr ac tices there are a few key rules and regulations to keep everyone safe and responsible. Arguably most important rule, as many SML homeowners would agree, is to be mindful of where you go on the lake to wakesurf. For a wave to be tall enough and powerful enough to keep a surfer in front
A s w i t h a n y ot h e r wate r s p o r t,
Other than the natur al street cred that comes with wakesurfing, there are a handful of reasons why it is a water sport worth trying. Wakesurfing is one of those sports where it’s easy to be having so much fun that you don’t realize the extent of the workout you’re putting your body through. Muscles in the feet have to be fully engaged to maintain balance on the board. Wakesurfing is known to work the core, quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves as well. Wakesurfing falls are significantly lower impact as the sport requires just half the speed of waterskiing, wakeboarding or tubing. Unlike a wakeboard where feet are strapped down to the board, a wakesurf board allows for a more minimalistic approach with just bare feet on the board. This allows for less abrasive falls and flexibility to make adjustments mid-ride, while also being able to make swift motion tricks such as pumping, snapping, riding switch and pulling of full rotations. Wake sports have always served as a classic summer activity to promote family togetherness and learn new skills. Wakesurfing fits perfectly into this category as it connects the mind and body, improving balance and focus along the way. While beginner surfers might find a bit of frustration in the learning curve, the sense of accomplishment and joy that hits when you can carve the wave for the first time is different from any other sport. It’s that feeling that has propelled the sport of wakesurfing to its booming popularity on Smith Mountain Lake and around the world. “Beginners might not get it the first time, but it’s like riding a bike,” Morgan said. “Almost nobody gets it the first time they try — so keep your head above water, and you will fall in love with the sport like I did!”

Maintain a Proper Lookout This tip is so important that it’s stated in both the International and Inland Rules of Navigation. Just as in driving, operator distraction is a major contributor to boating incidents. If your boat has an attentive lookout, you have a chance of avoiding a collision with a boat that doesn’t. Every operator is obligated to take action to avoid a collision with another boat. Scan the waterway, anticipate potential dangers, clearly indicate your intended course and stay clear of other vessels, obstacles, navigation aids, docks and swimmers. Skippers of bow-riders should make sure passengers riding forward don’t block their view ahead.
Be Alert for Floating Debris in the Lake Boaters who encounter debris that could be a hazard to other boaters should tow the debris to undeveloped shoreline, secure it if possible and report the location to Appalachian Power Company at www.smithmtn. com or 1-800-956-4237. Appalachian routinely removes debris from Smith Mountain and Leesville lakes from April through October and as needed at other times during the year. Debris in the lake is most likely to occur after heavy rains.
Understand and Maintain Your Boat & Equipment Arrange for a vessel safety check of equipment and systems every year by a member of the U.S. Power Squadron or U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Your inspector will review key safe boating reminders with the skipper and crew. While there are no vessel checks currently scheduled, you can always visit cgaux.org to arrange a boat or personal watercraft inspection nearby or at your own dock. It’s free, and it can provide you with peace of mind. 62
S M I T H M O U N T A I N L A K E R | May/June 2020
Know the Rules of the Road Boats being overtaken and boats ahead crossing from the starboard quarter (right front) have the right of way. When it’s dark, foggy or raining, you should reduce your speed and use running lights. Keep to the right in channels, leave plenty of space when overtaking and don’t fall in line with boats that are towing skiers or tubers.
Follow The Rules Never allow passengers to ride on the gunwales, seat backs or outside of protective railings, including the front of a pontoon boat. A sudden turn, stop or start could cause a fall overboard. After leaving a boat launch or marina, maintain a slow, no-wake speed for a safe and legal distance. Learn and follow the navigation rules.
Create and Maintain Trim On watercraft, such as paddleboards, canoes and kayaks, it’s important to distribute weight evenly for level floating, both fore and aft and port to starboard. This requires proper placement of people and items aboard for optimum balance. Power boats also should be trimmed, which involves seating passengers evenly side-to-side and more forward than aft, which minimizes loss of visibility as a boat comes on plane. Strategic observer placement and use of motor trim and/or trim tabs also helps keep the bow down when pulling skiers out of the water. Boaters should keep their craft level … and remain levelheaded, too.
Never Swim Alone Whether from shore, off the dock or off the boat, use the buddy system to ensure someone is paying attention to every swimmer. And designate a responsible adult to watch youth swimmers at all times. Don’t presume someone will take on that role.
Wear Life Jackets Correctly ... The U.S. Coast Guard designates use of life jackets based on weight and chest size and sometimes age. Equipment should be sized and worn correctly with all straps connected. Children should have the lower crotch strap between their legs connected on their life jacket. It is important to realize that without this strap children could slide out of their jacket. Falling from a dock or boat significantly increases the pressure and chances of the life jacket separating from a child.
... Even When Working on Docks During the boating season, many people find themselves around a dock. Consider wearing a life jacket when loading, unloading or working on or around a boat. A fall from more than 6 feet can be life-threatening. A fall that includes a head injury and submersion in water can be catastrophic, according to the American Red Cross. Make sure children wear life jackets on docks, in boats and around the water.
Be Properly Equipped
Whether heading out on the water for a day or for an hour, take along a fully charged phone, a phone charger, a lake map, sunscreen and sufficient hydration for everyone aboard. Photos getty images, dreamstime

Reel ’Em In: Striper Fishing Striper fishing remains a popular pastime at Smith Mountain Lake for all ages. Anglers use a variety of methods, such as drifting live bait, trolling plugs and bucktail jigs or casting top water lures. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries limits SML catches to 2 per day in the aggregate. There is no length limit from June 1 to Oct. 31, though no striper between 30 inches and 40 inches may be caught from Nov. 1 to May 31. Photos getty images

situation has me in an introspective mood. I’ve noticed that I’m capable of watching endless hours of HGTV — OK, not really a huge epiphany and truth be told I’ve been practicing this procrastination technique for years. I’ve learned that I can be somewhat trapped with the Hubs and not kill him (however, the dust up over the dirty dishes left in the sink was a doozy). Mostly, I’ve found that in times of uncertainty I yearn for the familiar. I’ve gravitated toward sweet and somewhat nostalgic films such as “You’ve Got Mail” and comfort foods that have contributed to the “quarantine 15” I’ve acquired. This hankering for normalcy and connection prompted me to reach out to some of the best people I’ve ever known: my high school peeps. My high school experiences are perhaps similar to many: a close-knit group of debate team geeks who saw me at my adolescent worst, and loved me with a fierce dedication to friendship and unconditional support. There’s something about the shared exploits of youth that sticks with you: your music, your young heartbreaks, your academic challenges, are all frozen in time and collective memory. I’ve been lucky to have kept in touch with many from the class of ’81. A core group has stayed in close contact for decades. Two of my best girlfriends have been so since I was 14 years old. So, when someone floated the idea of organizing a virtual happy hour over Zoom (a web-based video conferencing tool) there echoed a resounding “Yes!” For the record, the CEO of Zoom should receive a medal for offering up the service nearly fee-free during the coronavirus crisis. Seriously, can we give him some sort of title — maybe make him an Under Secretary for Humanity? We scheduled our meet-up for 5 p.m. on a Sunday and all agreed to connect with cocktails in hand. When the Hubs and I linked up as decided, there on the

Apart, Together Hankering for a happy hour? Online platforms let us emphasize the “social” despite the “distancing.” monitor appeared the high schoolers I hold so dear: a college professor working to figure out how to virtually get her students to the end of the semester; an economist trying to forecast just how bad things are going to get financially; a housing guru who is concerned about how to build houses when you can’t, well, build houses; a restauranteur who has morphed three thriving businesses into take-out only, while trying to keep as many staff as possible on the payroll; an executive director sheltering at home with her 93-year-old mother. Within minutes of the launch of our teleconference, we came to resemble our high school selves. Among our talk of worry for our parents and children,
there were plenty of “that’s what she said” jokes, much-needed hearty laughs and smiles. These soulmates knew just how to lift each other up, and a call that was planned for one hour extended well past two. We all agreed to link up again in a week. If there’s any silver lining here, perhaps it’s that we’ve been reminded of what’s truly important: family, lifelong friends and a perfectly timed “that’s what she said.” I do hope you and yours are staying safe and healthy.
